I am so over BROWN! The grass, the leaves, the sky, the attitudes – it’s been a long span without color. I’m over it. Bring this girl some color! I’m ready for flowers and green stuff. Without a doubt springtime always brings with it the tone of happy. I think we all could stand a little more “happy” in our life. If you’ve been following me for the last few months you know that I’ve made a pact to shed the more challenging events of this past year. I’m glad to report that I am on track and sticking to my positive outlook. With my broken arm keeping me sidelined from working out, I’ve realized just how much anger I would take out on those weights. It’s no secret we all have drama. The magic is in finding an outlet for that drama – a positive outlet. For some, exercise works. Others like to clean or organize. Maybe, it’s as simple as a relaxing bath. The point is, have a vehicle to release that stress when the urge to rip someone’s head off takes over! Or else this could happen: Last week my daughter and I were in my husband’s ridiculously BIG truck. As we were attempting to park this monster at a restaurant, I had apparently not pulled up as far as I could have. As my 10 year old opens the door, the lady next to us felt it important to yell at my daughter and school her on how to properly park – like my daughter had anything to do with it. Rude! As my daughter and I carried on, I noticed a little smirk on my sweet child’s face. I told her the lady must have just been having a bad day. My daughter told me it was OK, “I stuck my tongue out at her while she was looking!” We both cracked up, laughing! I guess the moral of the story is don’t try to impose your difficulties on those around you. Otherwise, you might just get a tongue wagging in your face! Enjoy this month’s edition and be sure to check out our article titled, The Great Spring Cleanout. Next month is a focus on Easter and more spring. If you have a special service email us and we’ll put it in our listing. Until then, keep looking up and I’ll see ya on the streets…

www.LocalLifeTX.com

Ah, Spring! by Lindsay Rose

It’s a time of renewal, rebirth and rejuvenation on so many levels. It’s not just about the little green sprouts in our gardens or our excitement to get out and enjoy the outdoors. It's about taking advantage of the energy that spring brings with it. After one of the harshest winters North Texas has experienced in more than a decade, this year more than ever, we are ready for Mother Nature to do her thing. There’s no denying the energy that those first 70 degree days bring. You run to the grocery store, buy some burgers for the grill and get ready to enjoy some patio time. That’s when you realize the sad state of your patio. You go inside to dig out the tongs and again, you realize the sad state of your closet. Before you can get spring into full swing, you need to take time to clean. As I learned from a quick Facebook poll amongst my friends, spring cleaning means different things to different people. To some, it is all about getting outdoors and taking care of the house and the garden. To others, it’s simply a time to tackle chores that aren’t part of your normal routine. But let’s not just look at spring cleaning as a time to get your house cleaned up. It’s also a great time to harness the rejuvenation spring brings and apply it to our personal lives as well.

Local Life | MARCH 2014

5

Step 1 DECLUTTER

There’s something about the cooped up feeling of winter that leads us to hoard things. Clothes. Toys. Paperwork. That stuff your mom gave you the last time she cleaned out her house. It’s time to take a stand and declare your house a clutter-free zone. A popular method for decluttering your house is to apply the four-bin rule. Use one bin each marked Keep, Trash, Sell and Give Away. Go through everything. The shelves should be empty when you're done. If you tend to be a bit sentimental, have a friend help you stay on track. Now is also a great time plan a garage sale. Setting a date when you begin your cleanup will keep those piles from simply moving

from your closet to your garage. Decluttering your personal life takes a totally different kind of commitment. Cleaning out a closet takes a day. Ridding yourself of a bad habit requires a continued effort. New Year’s resolutions have come and perhaps gone, so use spring’s energy and try again or take a different approach. Maybe you’re sick and tired of the daily mad-rush to get the family out the door. Call a family meeting and outline steps each person can take to make mornings easier. Perhaps that new workout routine didn’t last, but spring’s warmer weather and longer days could help you achieve success. Whatever your goal, make a plan, put it in writing if you need to, and tackle it with a renewed sense of commitment.

Step 2 CLEAN Once the clutter is cleared, break out the soaps, cloths and vacuum and get to work. This is the part of spring cleaning that has different meaning to everyone. Where does routine cleaning end and spring cleaning begin? Let’s assume basic dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning of sinks, tubs and countertops are part of most of our normal 6

www.LocalLifeTX.com

routines. My recommendation is to follow my aunt Ann’s advice: take things one room at a time and start by opening a window. Airing out a room is the best way to clear out winter’s stuffiness and let in spring’s freshness. Chances are, opening that window will lead to a dusty corner that you’ve missed, and cleaning that dusty corner will lead to another and another

and another. By focusing on one room at a time, instead of one activity at a time, you’re less likely to get distracted by every little thing that needs attention. Most people’s spring cleaning efforts include dusting or vacuuming windows and blinds, scrubbing baseboards, dusting fans and cleaning vents, and wiping down surfaces that don’t get regular attention, like your cabinets, doors and light fixtures. Next, take your spring cleaning outside and clean those filthy window exteriors. Nothing shows off the sparkling clean inside of your house like clean windows. Get out the hose and spray off and wipe down the patio furniture. Scrub the grill, clean out the gutters, and get your favorite outdoor playthings ready to be used at a moment’s notice. With those overlooked areas of your house clean, take a moment to think about overlooked areas of your life. Have your work habits gotten sloppy? Make a renewed effort to clean out that inbox, finish projects that are easily put off and try harder at the things you do every day. Is social media getting you down? Yes, to those of you not into social media, this is a real thing. Clean up your friends list or take a break from social media altogether. Unfriend that guy you kind of knew when you worked together three years ago. Hide the posts of people you can’t exactly unfriend, like that annoying cousin-in-law. You’ll feel a weight lifted from your shoulders, and most likely, these people will never know you did it.

Step 3 MAINTAIN The final part of spring cleaning will likely require some heavy lifting. A little maintenance goes a long way in making sure invaluable appliances like your washer and dryer, refrigerator and dishwasher remain in good, working order. Pull out the fridge, vacuum the coils and inspect the hoses and cords. I did this for the first time in about five years and I can vouch that it should be done annually. Yikes. Next, pull out the dryer and vacuum out the vent. Lint builds up far beyond the lint trap and can be a fire danger. Again, check the cords while you’re back there. Freshen your dishwasher by pouring a cup of baking soda into the bottom and running it through the rinse cycle. Baking soda can do wonders for just about any drain in your house, so keep a few boxes on hand. Now that your appliances are in good shape, perhaps there are a few other areas of your life that need a little maintenance. Is there an important relationship that has been overlooked? As adults, we often put all our effort into the most obvious relationships in our lives, our spouses and children, and overlook other invaluable relationships, like those with friends. Spring is a great time to rekindle a friendship. Really, any time is a great time to rekindle a friendship. Whether you focus your spring cleaning efforts on your house or your life, take advantage of the energy and rejuvenation spring brings. We’ve been cooped up more than usual this year, and it’s high time we get up, get out and get cleaning.

MEXICAN CORNBREAD Mexican Cornbread is a south-of-the-borderinspired casserole that’s easy to make. It’s a tasty, filling dinner and it reheats very well. YOU’LL NEED:

DIRECTIONS:

Non-stick cooking spray 1 pkg corn muffin mix (Jiffy is my Favorite) 1 egg 1/3 cup reduced fat (2%) milk 1 can Mexi-Corn 1/2 lb ground chuck beef (80% lean) 1 can refried beans 1/2 tsp taco seasoning 1 cup shredded mexican cheese blend

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Spray 8x8-inch glass baking dish with cooking spray; set aside. 2. Cook beef and add taco seasoing in medium skillet over medium-high heat 3 to 5 minutes or until crumbled and no longer pink, stirring occasionally; drain. 3. Stir together cornbread mix, egg, milk, and pour HALF into a prepared dish. 4. Layer your taco meat on top. After that spread the refried beans on top. (I usually only use 1/2 the can). Top that with the mexi-corn. Then cover it with cheese. Finally, spread the rest of the cornbread mixture on top. 5. Bake 15 to 20 minutes or until edges are lightly browned and cornbread is done.

QUICK AND EASY FOR A BUSY FAMILY
