Lincoln, NE Fall 2017 Collaborative Project: Kylie Miller & Tyler Howell AIA People’s Choice Award

Triune, consisting of three in one. Within the Lutheran religion, one of the most sacred elements is the Holy Trinity; the idea being that the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, though different, all come together to create God and how God himself can be broken down into the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. With Triune, we took the idea behind the Holy Trinity, the relationship of how three becomes one and one becomes three, and used it as a main element to influence the overall form of the design to create a piece of contemporary architecture that sought to bring to forefront the idea of how God the creator is mighty, pure, as well as a protector. Secondary elements, such as Passage and Light were employed within the design concept to provide a sense of connection, or transition from one space to the next as well as a sense of mediation between all three forms. Material selection was accomplished by looking at three main parts: pure, haptic and comfort, all of which come together to highlight the relationship humanity has with its creator.

Structurally, Glu-Lam columns were driven into the floor plate, acting as an anchor for the exterior walls.

Skylights along the edges of both interior corridors allow light to penetrate downward onto the floor, thus acting as an artificial barrier.

Exterior metal paneling provides a pure, holistic appearance to the exterior of the design, thus reinforcing the notion of the Holy Trinity.

Incorporating the mechanical systems within the floor as well as the walls allows for a cleaner, more holistic appearance for both the Nave and adjacent Crypt rooms.

Plano, IL Spring 2017 Preservation vs Provocation Design Competition

The current Farnsworth House Visitor Center is in dire need of a renovation. Mis Van der Rohe was know for challenging the status quo; a well known example of this is displayed in the design of the Farnsworth House itself. In order to successfully design a structure that both celebrated the style of Mies applied within the Farnsworth House, as well as ensuring not to distract from the House itself, four main intentions were applied: Challenging the status quo by changing the way designers currently define and design both public and private space. Lightening the presence of the design on the site to fit more with nature. Integrating sustainable systems such as on site water collection systems as well as solar exposure to minimize the designs impact on its surroundings and reinforcing the concept of seclusion of the site to users.

PRESERVATION VS PROVOCATION

“Its been said that, at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future”

Chicago, IL Spring 2017

With urban sprawl being one of the issues facing society today, one way we as designers may solve this issue is through parasitic/symbiotic architecture; designing in places not usually seen as plausible or typical. Not only should these types of designs help eliminate urban sprawl, they should give back to their surrounding community. The design is located within downtown Chicago’s inner loop. By positioning the modules within walking distance of four Universities, provides students with an alternative learning space compared to the classical collegiate setting. The design consists of eight pre-fabricated modules that serve as either single or group learning spaces. In addition to being an off site learning module, the symbiote also gives back directly to the community in an educational way. When fully assembled, the modules double as composting machines for an adjacent restaurant; which in time, composts excess waste into the garden below.

SYMBIOTIC ARCHITECTURE

“The slurbs, urban sprawl, and the infinite number of housing developments of the postwar boom have contributed to the architecture of entropy.”

Chongqing, China Fall 2017 University of Nebraska Lincoln Study Abroad

Parkview is a mixed use high rise that provides a live-work environment for the people of Chongqing. With a focus on forming a space that not only brings nature to the forefront, Parkview also creates an array of social spaces for all users that in turn provide for a healthier, more sustainable community. Due to its location being positioned along the most accessible edge of the site, Parkview holds the responsibility of acting as a gateway by bridging the surrounding communities to its own. Parkview in itself is unique due to its structural composition. Close to the entire design is crafted from forms of engineered timber. This composition not only creates a more biophilic environment for the users within, it also holds stunning aesthetic qualities while reducing harmful impacts on the environment.

PARKVIEW Initial mass.

Splitting the mass creates a corridor that connects the outer site to the inner core, increasing accessibility.

Pushing in the ends of the mass creates open space which in return forms multiple public gathering spaces .

Extruding masses to eliminate sprawl and reducing the impact on the surrounding environment.

Pressing down half of each mass, thus creating addition gathering space for the users of Parkview.

Subtracting the core of both masses adds additional open space for users to both gather and communicate.

“The purpose of architecture is to create an atmosphere in which man can live, work and enjoy
