18 I wake and move, sluggish and instinctive, toward the window across my little room. I seek the light to seize my drowsiness. I seek an opening to garner an observable sense of time and direction. The horizon presents itself as the mass of the city exposes its base to my view. I stop. Standing, stretching, against the window. As my eyes adjust to the early light, my perception expands, details unfolding like those of a familiar tapestry. Directly before me lies a presents of layers. It striates, falling away from me, nested in the receding slope which bends to the park across the way. It is initially confusing upon every approach, inviting in its complexity. Strands of various depth slide against one another, their form, blocks of court, garden, wall, and lawn, apparent in their juxtaposition. Emerging from my dormitory, the pavement guides me to the corner, along that which I had experienced from the height of my window. Once again it is confusing to me, the clarity of my previous vantage being lost, its once defined forms less apparent. It shifts, alters its configuration as my position progresses along its section, it appropriates my full attention in its complexity.
