real feather in their cap. This is how Major General Vincent Beaton (51), commander of the Blue Downs police cluster – including Kuils River, Kleinvlei, Mfuleni, Delft, Belhar, Ravensmead and Bellville South – described several awards bestowed on his personnel recently at the police’s annual Prestige Awards. Beaton, who took over the reigns as cluster commander in 2010, says he is extremely proud of the men and women in the cluster who scooped several coveted awards. “I am very excited about these awards; it shows that the strategy we implemented works and now we can reap the rewards,” he says. Beaton adds the employees in the cluster are all very focused – a vital skill needed to achieve success. “Over the past few months we had an increase in serious and violent crimes, mostly gang-related crimes, business and house robberies, as well as car hijackings. I handpicked a team of detectives to deal with it,” he says. The investigation team was awarded the title of Detective Group of the Year at the Prestige Awards, held two weeks ago at Century City. The team targeted high-flyers in organised crime circles and worked closely with prosecutors to achieve their arrests and conviction successes. “The prosecutors assisted and guided us with the dockets,” he says. Some of the areas where gangs and organised criminals mostly focused on, include Kleinvlei, Mfuleni, Wesbank, Ravensmead and Delft. A large number of the criminals are in court or in detention, with a few of them having had their bail application successfully opposed, Beaton says. The cluster also focused closely on its trio of crime – including car hijacking, business and house robbery – and had an anti-gang investigating team dedicated to deal with this as well. Asked about the awards bestowed on the cluster, he says the police management and personnel were always hopeful. V To page 2.

‘Puppy’ solid as a rock The Dobermann Club of the Cape recently held its Championship Breed Show in Jagtershof, Kuils River, where Call Me Rock (here with his owner and handler, Lerénchia Geldenhuys from Bekanntschaft Dobermanns) won the award for Best Puppy. The show was judged by William Soedharman, a Dobermann specialist from Indonesia, here with “Rock”. The award for Best in Show went to Out On Bail, also known as Bailey, handled by Thyra Aberdein and bred by Donne Lucas from Chaldonne Dobermanns. Geldenhuys says the show, an annual event which was held last week Sunday, was a huge success and attracted a lot of visitors.

Awards were also given to them for the Detective of the Year and Catch of the Year. “The standard of policing is high in the province and we were competing against 15 other clusters in the Western Cape. “We had high hopes that we would receive awards as our standards are just as high in the cluster,” he says. Beaton personally congratulated the group of winners during a recent cluster meeting at the Mfuleni Police Station. Beaton boasts 30 years of working experience in the police and moved to Cape Town from Port Elizabeth in 2001. He served as the deputy area commander in Paarl before he was transferred to various police stations across the Western Cape. He also became station commander at the Bishop Lavis and Manenberg police stations and has several years’ experience and exposure at cluster level. Beaton, who has a national diploma in police administration behind his name, is currently studying towards his Master’s degree in public administration at the University of Pretoria. He says the awards are one way of motivating the rest of the employees in the cluster to produce more. “Hopefully we will see similar results next year,” he says.

Kuils River trees draped in pretty pink

o help raise awareness of breast cancer in October, several trees along the streets of Kuils River have been draped in pink material. The project is done in collaboration with Pink Trees for Pauline, a non-profit organisation. The vision of the project is to wrap as many trees as possible with pink material during the month of October, thereby creating a “pink” town that will focus attention on cancer and cancer awareness, says Annie Smith, project coordinator of the awareness campaign in Kuils River. The public and residents of Kuils River

can become involved by buying pink material at R20 per metre. In October the material is then wrapped around trees in front of houses or along strategic routes, where it is highly visible. The project aims to collect as much funding as possible to donate to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa). The material is available at the Kuils River Library and Langverwacht Dental at the Langverwacht Square Shopping Centre. V Anyone interested in supporting the project can visit the Facebook page at

Chronic meds finally at W’bank Clinic

esbank residents will be relieved to hear they no longer have to travel to neighbouring Delft to collect their chronic medication. Those who struggle with chronic illnesses can now collect their prescriptions from the local Wesbank Clinic in Silversands Road in Wesbank. The change comes after a series of complaints were received by the newly elected ward councillor, Ricardo Saralina, of peo-

ple having to walk far to get their medicine. Last week Saralina said senior citizens reported that they have to collect their chronic medicine each month at the Delft Day Hospital and that they have to cross the R300 highway footbridge to get there. “They are being robbed of their money and their medicine,” Saralina said. He added: “Following my communication with the Mayco member for health, Siyabulela Mamkeli, and nurse Marande Maree at

the Wesbank Clinic, we concluded that the seniors of Wesbank can collect their chronic medicine in Wesbank,” he said. He said patients have to indicate at the Delft Day Hospital that they want to collect their chronic medicines at the Wesbank Clinic, so prescriptions will be sent to Wesbank Clinic by the courier company on Wednesdays. Patients can then collect their medication on a Friday from 08:00 to 11:00.

Man sentenced to 22 years for three murders The Mfuleni police are celebrating the recent successful conviction of a 21-year-old man on murder charges. Police spokesperson Captain Nomathemba Muavha says on Wednesday 12 October the Cape Town High Court sentenced Ntandazo Yekizulu – also known as “Ntara” – to a total of 22 years of direct imprisonment on three counts of murder. “He was sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment for one murder, another 12 years for a second murder and a further 22 years’ direct imprisonment for a third murder case,” Muavha says. The sentences will run concurrently. The first murder took place on 1 November 2014 when a 40-year-old man was stabbed in the head and throat in Nosipho Street in the Bardale informal settlement in Mfuleni. A day later a 22-year-old man was murdered in Mbilo Street, Extension 6, Mfuleni. The victim was stabbed in the chest and the eye. The third murder occurred on the same day, this time in Olifant Street, Mfuleni. The victim was stabbed in the neck, Muavha says. Swift action leads to arrest

f you’re driving a stolen car with no number plates and decide to jump a red traffic light, then you’re asking to be arrested. This scenario played out on Thursday 13 October, when Law Enforcement (LE) members were serving warrants. Officers observed a Toyota Yaris at the intersection of Belrail and Robert Sobukwe roads in Bellville, said LE principle inspector, Wayne Dyason. “The vehicle had no rear number plate and there were three occupants inside. The alert officers’ attention was immediately drawn and at the next intersection the driver jumped a red traffic light.

“The officers pursued the vehicle and the suspects were cornered when they drove down a cul-de-sac. The suspects all exited the vehicle and fled on foot,” he said. The officers charged after the suspects on foot, he said, catching up to and arresting two suspects. The two are from Kuilsriver and Delft respectively and they were detained at the Bellville Police Station and charged. “The vehicle tested positive as being stolen from the Cloetesville area in Stellenbosch. It was taken to the police’s vehicle pound in Stikland.” V What do you think of this swift action? Let us know at

Wesbank unites through sport S

everal attempts have been made to help get children off the streets and keep them safe in the crime-ridden area of Wesbank. One of the ways implemented recently by community workers was to use sport – not just as a way to help occupy the young ones, but also as a mechanism to bring forth change. To this end, a sports day was held on Saturday 1 October, arranged by the Centre for Justice and Crime Prevention (CJCP), an organisation under the umbrella of the department of social development. This department regularly works

with dysfunctional families and problem kids. Anthea Davids, a family preservation project manager at CJCP, said the organisation collaborated with the Wesbank United Netball Club to host the Wesbank United Netball Challenge on the day. “The focus was to unite the community by using sport as a medium to promote change and unity in the community, where there has recently been an influx of gang violence and crime. “The children are exposed to many evils on a daily basis that restricts them from participating and being involved in social and recreational activities,” Anthea said. “It for this reason that the netball club manager, Sharon Tieties, highlighted the need to fight back and create a space where young people can come and interact with one another, participate in sport by showcasing their talent and have a positive event that young and old can engage in.” The day started with a performance by the New Generation Youth Cadets, the singer Soekie West and Ou Polony who rapped some of his songs. lot of undiscovered talent in Wesbank. “She motivated the parents to take a stand and encourage the children to do something with their lives and echoed the netball club slogan, which is ‘A child in sport is one less in court’,” Anthea said. “The attendees appreciated it very much as they could have fun without being fearful. Only a few netball teams displayed their talent, even though the entire community was invited to attend as a means to unite the community.” The winners on the day were the junior team of Wesbank United Netball Club. The event was attended by approximately 200 people. The children had fun on a jumping castle and were also served a plate of food, Anthea said. “We would like to thank all our sponsors and volunteers that assisted on the day; your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks for partnering with us to make a difference,” she said.

Station receives R54m revamp T

he newly upgraded park-and-ride facility at the Eerste River train station will hopefully bring some relief to commuters who are forced to travel early in the morning or late at night. The parking area at the station as well as the pedestrian and cycle routes were upgraded recently by the City of Cape Town at a cost of R54 million. A similar upgrade was undertaken at the Kuils River train station, where these facilities have since its completion been utilised to the maximum by residents. A significant number of residents from Eerste River also travel by rail to avoid the congestion on the main arterial routes during peak-hour traffic. Many of them live far from the station and are compelled to park their private ve-

hicles at the station. Until recently there was an insufficient number of parking bays at the station – something which is now hopefully a thing of the past. In a statement issued last week, the municipality’s transport authority, Transport for Cape Town (TCT), said the City has a total of 68 park-and-ride facilities at railway stations with more than 3600 parking bays available for motorists. These bays are used by commuters who do not live within walking distance of the stations and need a safe space to park their vehicles before continuing with the rest of their commute by train. “The City commenced with the project in Eerste River in May 2014 after we conducted a survey which found that the park-andride facility at the train station in Stasie

The pedestrian and cycle routes at the station have also been upgraded.

Road did not have enough parking bays, resulting in motorists parking illegally in side streets or on vacant land. We also found that pedestrians and cyclists did not have safe routes to and from the station. As such, we embarked on a two-year project to address these insufficiencies,” said Brett Herron, the City’s Mayco member for the TCT. The first phase of the project entailed the upgrading of walkways and shared facilities. This included walkways wide enough for use by pedestrians and cyclists. The upgrades also focused on safety and universal access, which included dropped kerbs and tactile paving, for road users with special needs. The design and layout of the walkways and shared facilities also had to be changed

to improve the pedestrian links between the Eerste River central business district and the station precinct. “The project was completed a few days ago when we added another 52 new parking bays to the existing 100 bays at the parkand-ride facility. “Residents who live too far away to walk to the station can park at the park-and-ride free of charge and for as long as they need to. “The purpose of park-and-ride facilities is to make it easier and more convenient for motorists to swop their private vehicles for public transport. These facilities are very popular – in fact, the average occupancy rate of the 68 facilities across the city is above 80% on any given week day,” Herron said.

Several more parking bays have been added to the parking area at the Eerste River train station where commuters can leave their private vehicles and travel to work by train. PHOTOS: CITY OF CAPE TOWN

Mall trolley porter thanked for honesty RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

Thanks to the honesty of a shopping mall employee, a Kuils River resident was recently able to get back one of his most expensive personal belongings hours after losing it. Silveroaks resident Brigette Campbell, a photographer, told TygerBurger last week she and her husband realised upon their arrival home from CapeGate Shopping Centre that the family’s Apple iPad was missing. The device was left behind in one of the trolleys at the mall after their visit on Monday 3 October. The couple first feared the device would be long gone, but a surprise awaited them when they returned to the mall. In her account of the story, described as “too good not to be shared”, she explained

how they realised that good Samaritans still exist. “We did our shopping and left the mall, but when we got home, we realised that my husband had left his brand new iPad, that was just three days old, behind in the trolley or in one of the stores we went to. “I called the store and they never contacted me back, so I tried the centre management. There I spoke to a woman who told me that a trolley porter found my husband’s iPad in one of their trolleys and he brought it to them,” Campbell explains. The device was handed in at one of the supermarket chains in the mall and kept safe. “I have to be honest with you – we never expected that we would find it again and was convinced that it was probably gone. I was absolutely, pleasantly surprised at the honesty of this gentleman. At the same time I

was saddened with the realisation that we have become so negative with the way things are today. We seem to have lost our ability to believe in basic honesty and integrity of people in general. “I felt that this man, who I am sure does not earn much, decided to do the right thing and not be tempted to keep it. He is an inspiring human being, who not only restored my faith in people, but made me think more about how I view society in general,” Campbell said. The trolley porter was identified as William Thomas. “This makes you realise that we have come to expect the worst of people with the way crime is rife. Yet, once again, I have been shown that basic human kindness and honesty will never die. “We are both truly grateful to him for doing what he did,” Campbell said.

‘Koekedoor’ laat my na my ma verlang

– Avril Fillies

Balancing act: Seen on Durban Road last week: An alternative way to hang around? Or is this man just taking a cat nap?

Thanks for not mowing! Thank you City of Cape Town for the delay in mowing the sidewalks and fields in the Brackenfell area. Yes, thank you. Looking at several complaints published in TygerBurger about the mowing of public fields and lawns I wish to respond. At times we as residents need to look beyond our preferences of a visually neat environment. We are – individually as property owners – collectively the landscape creators of our residential “habitat”. Through our garden sculpture activities – big or small – we individually contribute to the greater picture of our environment. When we refer to weeds – what are we referring to? Some may be weeds in our minds, but factually it’s part of our natural flora. Annually in mid-August these “weeds” and grasses explode, often to the visual dismay of some residents, and it just does not look “neat”. We in Brackenfell are blessed with various wide open spaces and wildlife other residential areas do not have. I understand this uncontrollable growth is not visually stimulating, but at times we need to bear with it. Beyond our personal environmental preferences, our wild bird residents depend on this annual bloom in vegetation, the seed it produces and the insect life it attracts. After a hard, cold winter of limited food resources, this abundance brings the birds into breeding condition to naturally reproduce. In spring – early in the morning – sparrows, white eyes, doves, thrushes and robins sing praise to the change of a new season. Our

local Cape Canary puts up a chorus even Pavarotti would have been proud of. These little indigenous birds favour the dandy line seeds and are often seen feeding along our pathways among this vegetation. Where weed vegetation creates a fire hazard, I accept we need to intervene, but we as humans only act if we understand. I then also wish to ask the CCT to review the spraying of herbicides along our pathways. Looking at the contractors spraying the herbicides, and the day temperature while the herbicides are being applied, it’s a waste as the majority of herbicides are only effective in vegetation control if the day temperature during application exceeds 23 degrees. In applying herbicides without taking all the environmental factors into consideration in the long run makes your soil infertile, creating other problems. WEHAHN Brackenfell

Elderly not always the victim I refer to “Report elderly abuse here”, TB 5 October. Let’s look at it from a different angle: I am a single woman aged 44 and suffered abuse from my father, who recently turned 69, from a very young age – since I was a little girl. Alcohol was his weakness and he would come home and used to beat up my mom, so domestic violence was the order of the day. We had to look on as we were still very small. Now when he’s drunk, he takes out his frustration on me, swears at me and has made three attempts to hit me, but some family members have always intervened just in time. Where do you draw the line

when verbal, emotional, financial and attempted physical abuse comes from the very elderly person you are referring to, as we all should “live a life free from abuse and exploitation” as quoted. He doesn’t want to admit he has a problem. I offered help (from our employee assistance programme) which he refused. It affects one’s health and overall well-being, as many a time I was a nervous wreck. Captain Chandler needs to realise what is really going on in family homes, as many times the children are the victims of such abuse. I refuse to “suffer in silence”. See what the shocking reality has on the effect of abuse in a broader spectrum and not just towards the elderly. After all – who’s abusing who? ANONYMOUS Email

Why can’t City host firework show? Re. “Fireworks are not allowed in streets”, TB, 12 October. On the subject of the fireworks – why can’t the City of Cape Town follow the

example of Port Elizabeth, who for decades have hosted a fireworks display for the people of the city? It’s a wonderful way in which the city can give something back to the residents. By having qualified pyrotechnic experts setting off the fireworks they can avoid injuries or accidents. This also prevents the mess and it’s a wonderful experience for those who can’t afford to buy fireworks. BARBARA HENNINGER Table View

Be grateful – there are great doctors We always hear of all the negative stories about state hospitals and how bad the service is, but never the positive stories. Personally my family got great service when we had to rush my mom to Karl Bremer hospital in the early morning around 1:00 due to a heart attack. They struggled to get her stable for almost two hours with three doctors working on her. The next day she was taken by ambulance to Tygerberg Hospital where she was monitored all the time and had a procedure to have a stent put in. She made a full recovery and I can honestly say from our experience they have some of the best doctors, so maybe it’s time people stop complaining about the food and all the rest they find to complain about, but be more grateful there are doctors available when we really need them. So from me and the rest of my family – thank you to all the doctors at the Karl Bremer emergency unit and the Tygerberg heart unit. MARIO Bellville

Comedian explores cultural quirks LOUISA STEYL @lousteyl

outh Africa is an interesting place – especially when you consider its cultural quirks and odd slang from a foreigner’s perspective. These idiosyncrasies are the subject of American-born comedian Joe Emilio’s debut one-man show, Jou Ma se BBQ. Joe, who now lives in Uitzicht, will be performing the show at the Collective Arts Theatre in Bellville on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October. “I’ve been doing comedy for five years, so I thought it would be appropriate to launch my one-man show,” Joe explains. He was advised right at the beginning of his comedy career to treat every show as an opportunity to work on a one-man show, which is exactly what he’s been doing. His show takes its title from one of Joe’s oldest jokes, and he’s always had it at the back of his mind as a title for when the time was right. “That phrase is basically what I am in terms of being an American in South Africa and having to learn that you don’t call a braai a barbeque.” This is a lesson Joe learnt just two weeks after arriving in the country. He accidentally referred to the braai he was at as a barbeque and his host responded with, well, the name of the show essentially. Jou Ma se BBQ’s tongue-incheek name is also a good way to

sum up Joe’s comedy style. “I take South African culture from my experience, being here for nine years, and find a new, fresh way of looking at it for everyday South Africans that may take stuff like Pick n Pay for granted. “ Joe will also be sharing his experience on travelling to and in South Africa, learning what a robot is and his disappointment at discovering that Tyger Valley is in fact a shopping mall and not a tiger park. He points out though: “I talk about the culture in a respectful and joyful way, [the show] is in no way insulting or demeaning. “After all, I myself love South African culture,” Joe adds. “I’m going to marry a South African, so I have to.” Directed by Nelson de Gouveia, the Jou Ma se BBQ’s narrative takes the audience on a journey from Joe’s arrival in the country to now. “Basically, I ask the question: ‘Am I a South African now?’.” Joe is presenting the show with the support of True West Designs, a clothing company that will be selling merchandise at the venue, Creative Rite who offer affordable legal support to performers, Le Cut Hair Boutique, Acorns to Oaks who offer business advice, and Hael Services, who’ll be documenting both evenings. He says asking Nelson to direct the show was a no-brainer. “Nelson supported me from the beginning,” he says, adding that he’s grown into a really close friend. The two have worked together

before and Joe says simply: “I trust him; that’s what it boils down to.” Not one to take things slow, Joe is already working on his next project, which is set to take off on 4 November. He’s been hard at work promoting comedy in the northern suburbs for a few years now under the banner of #ThatsFunny. From the end of November, #ThatsFunny will have its own dedicated comedy club, and while he doesn’t want to give away too many details yet, Joe says the club will be in Burgundy Estate. He’ll make the official announcement about the club’s opening on the #ThatsFunny Facebook page on Friday 4 November. He’s also preparing for his debut at the Cape Town Comedy Club where he was invited to perform in December. “This is a big deal for me,” Joe says, pointing out that the club has pretty high standards. “I was over the moon when I got the email.” In the meantime, comedy fans can catch Jou Ma se BBQ at the Collective Arts Theatre in Bellville where he’ll be joined by Jaak Erasmus on Thursday 27 October and Etienne_D on Friday 28 October. Doors open at 18:30, the show starts at 20:30 and the audience are invited to bring their own alcohol. Tickets cost R50 from or R70 at the door. V For more information about Joe, his comedy, this show and other #ThatsFunny events around the northern suburbs, visit or the “HashtagThatsFunny” Facebook page.

Joe Emilio will be presenting his debut one-man show Jou Ma se BBQ at the Collective Arts Theatre at the end of the month.

SA PGA gets youth hooked on golf T

he PGA of South Africa has piloted a radical new youth golf coaching programme that is sweeping across Europe with great success. The goGolf programme aims to get children hooked on golf and keep them there by using inclusive learning techniques and embracing the use of technology such as smartphones and Apps. “goGolf really encourages the social aspect of golf and is based on group interac-

tion,” says Andrew Gunn, PGA of South Africa’s education and training manager. “The methodology empowers the coach to be a facilitator to learning rather than a dictator of technique. “Many children start playing golf early and are keen, but then life gets in the way and they lose interest as they get older. This is a common problem across all sports, and is addressed by goGolf.” According to Gunn, goGolf takes young as-

pirant golfers onto the course in their first session so that they are immersed in the game straightaway. “Then from here on they can choose how they want to progress,” says Gunn. The programme was presented at the PGA of South Africa’s recent Coaching Conference by Tony Bennett, the training and membership director of the PGAs of Europe. A total of 17 PGA of South Africa profes-

sionals have signed up for the goGolf pilot programme in South Africa, and are already seeing the benefits. “The course was inspiring and gave me a new appreciation of the learning process whereby learning golf becomes a marvellous act of self discovery,” said PGA Head Coach Martin Briede. “I have been applying the philosophy with my students and have had a very enthusiastic response.”

Die spanne is soos volg ingedeel: Afdeling 1: HS Bellville, The Settlers, Reddam House (voorheen bekend as Chesterhouse) en Parow (by HS Bellville); Afdeling 2: Brackenfell, De Kuilen, Belhar en Stellenberg (by HS Brackenfell); Afdeling 3: D.F. Malan, HTS Bellville, Edgemead en HS Tygerberg (op D.F.Malan-

veld); Afdeling 4: Durbanville, El Shaddai, Fairmont en Brackenfell B (by HS Durbanvilkle).

VOB, with a much improved performance, surprised arch rivals Athlone A’s 3-1 at the Vangate Sports Complex in Athlone on Sunday. In a closely contested game, VOB scored a run each in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings off the pitching of Dean Jacobs, one of three Athlone pitchers who represent South Africa. In all three innings, VOB recorded single hits while Athlone made an error, meaning that all of VOB’s runs were unearned. Athlone made six errors in total compared to VOB’s one. A’s managed to get a run back in the seventh inning. VOB somewhat surprised everyone when it started with former Silvertree and A’s pitcher Josh Rich. Rich did very well in his 4.2 inning start, giving away a hit and no runs, while walking two batters, striking out three. He was replaced by regular starter Grant Robertson, who conceded a hit and a run in his two-inning stint. Michael Scritten closed the last 2.1 inning and gave up a hit and a walk. Before Jacobs’s turn on the mound, A’s started with Lloyd Stevens, who walked a batter and struck out four in his four-inning stint. Carl Michaels closed out the last two innings for Athlone. Bothasig pip Crusaders Crusaders put up a better display when they went down 5-2 to Bothasig at the Abe Sher sports ground in Bothasig. Crusaders started with another one of their youthful pitchers, Kyle van der Ross. Van der Ross pitched three innings, giving away four hits and four walks, while conceding three runs. Bothasig started with Damon Mitchell, who also threw three innings, giving up three hits and three walks and striking out three hitters without conceding any runs. In the top of the fourth inning Jordi King replaced Mitchell but struggled. King only managed one out while giving three walks and conceding two runs, making the score

3-2 to Bothasig. Lucien Swartz replaced Van der Ross in the bottom of the fourth inning and kept Bothasig scoreless until Bothasig managed to score its final two runs in the seventh inning. Devon Clarke threw the last five innings for Bothasig, giving up a hit and striking out six Crusaders hitters. Dayle Feldtman (3/4) and Nicholas Eagles (2/4) hit well for Bothasig, while Van der Ross (2/3) and Ashwin Kleintjies (2/4) did well for Crusaders. Giants smash Durbanville Maitland Giants outhit Durbanville 13 hits to three to record an 18-4 win in Durbanville. Home runs by Jayde Thorne (3/4) and Kyle Inglis (2/3) set up the Maitland offence. They were well supported by Brad Erasmus (2/3), Argentine Juan Martin (2/3) and Ryan Sarmie (2/4). Durbanville used four pitchers who found it very difficult to stem the Maitland run onslaught. Damien Perkins, Kevin Townend, Darryn Smith and Brandon Smith were all given a tough time by the Maitland hitters. Jas Shergill, Maitland’s Canadian pitcher, and Jayde Thorne kept the Durbanville bats quiet by only conceding three scattered hits. Two big innings – the fourth and sixth – set up Maitland’s victory. Bellville shut out Westridge After a promising start, Westridge Yankees faltered to go down 10-0 to Bellville at the PP Smit sports ground. After four and a half innings Westridge were 1-0 down. Luwayne du Plessis threw 4.1 innings, conceding four runs from five hits and two walks and struck out two. He was replaced by Jared du Plessis, who got the two outs. Jayson Ripepi closed out the last two innings, conceding six runs from seven hits. Bellville’s Bertus Mostert threw 6.2 innings, conceding five hits and striking out four hitters. Bellville’s top hitters were Kyle Ettisch (3/3, including a home run), Jonathan Phillips (3/4) and Anthony Phillips (3/5). Westridge had five scattered hits.

Local karter ready to fly SA flag in world final Local youngster and leader of the Western Cape Senior Max karting championship, Dino Stermin, is in his element in his ancestral home in Northern Italy this week. Stermin is racing in the Vortex Senior Rok World Karting finals until Saturday. The Grade 11 learner from Fairmont High School cannot wait to fly the South African flag in this most competitive international field with some daunting firsts for him. “I’m really looking forward to racing at a track that I’ve never been to as well as to drive a Senior Rok kart for the first time,” said Dino. “This is a new experience for me and I’m really excited. I’m also looking forward to working with former South African world karting champion Wesleigh Orr and having the support of SA’s leading Roos Kart Team in Italy.” Stermin has sound international karting experience, having raced in the rival Rotax Max Grand event last year, but switched to the Rok event recently. “My goal is to make it to the final and if that happens, I would like to finish in the top 10,” Stermin promised. “We have a few days to practice and prepare, so I’m going to give it my all and hopefully make SA proud. “Let’s hope for the best!”

Bellville stewig in saal; ander sukkel SAREL BURGER
