209 BELHAR RESIDENTS: FULL OWNERSHIP

Beneficiaries get their title deeds GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

H

ouses meant happiness in Belhar last week. Some 209 residents of Belhar received the title deeds to their houses from Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela. The oldest beneficiary was 88 years old, along with a further three beneficiaries in their 90s, and 15 beneficiaries in their 80s. The issuing of these title deeds is part of

the Department’s strategy to inculcate a sense of ownership and responsibility amongst housing beneficiaries, and to ensure that all recipients of government houses have the full rights of property ownership by having their title deeds.

Housing It is part of the government’s EEDBS (Enhanced Extended Discount Benefit Scheme) policy that allows for the transfer of pre-1994 public housing into the beneficiaries’ names. These houses were originally sold to

beneficiaries under a loan agreement. However, the title deeds were not transferred from the government to the beneficiaries until the loans were paid off. Using the current housing subsidy, the government pays an amount towards the outstanding loan, and if the loan is cleared using the subsidy contribution, then the house is transferred to the beneficiary. The subsidy amount depends on the income level of the beneficiary. Many of the beneficiaries are unemployed, and live off a government social grant.

The public are warned about criminals who have been posing as city officials in order to rob households in various areas. Reports have been received from suburbs throughout the city and residents are urged to demand that city identity cards are presented before letting anyone into their homes. “It has come to our attention that individuals are approaching households within Pinelands and surrounding areas, claiming that they are from the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation Department and that they need to install shower heads to save water. “On some occasions they claim that they are from Eskom and need to install new bulbs or put reflective lights on the gates. These individuals are criminals who are robbing residents at gunpoint, and not city officials,” says Ernest Sonnenberg, mayco member for utility services. Identity cards, says Sonnenberg, should as a matter of procedure, be clearly visible on the person at all times. This card will display a photo of the official. All City of Cape Town staff are issued with these cards. You have the right to insist on seeing the card before allowing someone to enter your home. If you are in any way unsure, please call the City of Cape Town’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089. For water and sanitation, email watertoc@capetown.gov.za or SMS 31373; for electricity email power@capetown.gov.za or SMS 31220 to verify the ID of the official.

The secret to a long and blissful marriage: love GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

In a world where most marriages can’t stand the test of time Charles and Rosetta Bailey have just celebrated 70 years of married bliss. As friends and family gathered at their home in Elsies River to celebrate with them, their love for each other still shone brightly from their eyes. Their secret – love one another from the start and believe in the power of forgiveness at all times. This was the important advice from Rosetta (89), and Charles (93), adds that clean living and sharing a love for the church played a big part in their happy marriage. “Our faith has always kept us together,” says Rosetta.

Sharing “Apart from the church we have always believed in doing everything together as a family. Part of this was our love for travelling, the outdoor life and sharing those experiences with each other.” There is still a twinkle in Rosetta’s eyes when she recalls how they first met. “He was friends with my brothers, but I was in the church brigade as a young girl and when I rode past their house on my bicycle he would always be at the gate with some remark,” she laughs. Through involvement with various church organisations they got to know each other better and they tied the knot in 1943. The marriage produced four sons, but the couple confess that they have lost track with with all the grand, and great grandchildren. “What we are sure of is that there is now four generations in the family,” they laughed.

A ménage trois with a twist at Artscape The showcase production as part of the 9th Artscape Spring Drama Season is The Garage Sale, a new play by Rafiek Mammon. It is a dark comedy set in Rondebosch East, where Avril and Mike are carrying the last of the boxes from the house into the garage of their deceased parents’ home preparing for a garage sale. The play is directed by Geoffrey Hyland with designs by Marcel Meyer and the cast is Lee-Ann van Rooi, Riaan Visman and Armand Aucamp. The play can be seen on Friday 13 December at 17.30 and 19:00 and then again on Saturday 14 December at 16:00 and 18:00 in the

Artscape Arena. As the production is a try-out audience members are invited to fill in a questionnaire after the performance to assess the play. Roy Sargeant, who directs the Artscape New Writing Programme and the Spring Drama Seasons says: “We are delighted to have this new piece by Rafiek. Audiences will recall his enigmatic and fascinating Seashells from a couple of years ago. Add to this Geoffrey Hyland making his Artscape Spring Drama Season debut and we are confident of a very special experience.” The three handed, serious comedy/drama

is about siblings Avril and Mike Williams. Avril, a physiotherapist believes in her fairy tale ending, a strut down a church aisle while Mike, a freelance actor, mostly out of work, drives his cynicism like an open-top Ferrari, the sharpest thing in his luggage being his tongue. Throw in pizza deliveryman Flip and the scene is set for a ménage trois with a twist that sardonically explores the darker, yet funnier side of Cape Town suburbia. Tickets R30 at the door. V For more information on the production, please contact Themba Mzondi on 078 113 5216 or email Themba@sceproductions.co.za.

Many people are finding their way to empowerment through a unique organisation making a difference in the community. EduCOMPASS (Educational Competence and Supporting Skills) has for the past eight years been actively involved in training and community development programmes. They were recently busy at the Masithembele Enrichment Centre in Delft where 15 unemployed, unskilled or underskilled persons were trained in fabric painting and beadwork. Robby Roberts, director of the organisation, said that through their programmes they endeavoured to put into practice the objectives of the National Skills Development Strategy, the Skills Development Act and the Skills Development Levies Act. “Under the skilful facilitation of Sally Sprinkle, the trainees in Delft were taken through the process step by step,” he said. “They received training in free-hand painting, features of the colour wheel, colour mixing and painting to set patterns. “Items completed in the initial 10-day programme included pillow-cases, table-mats and milk jug covers.” He added that the main focus areas for this workshop were World Aids Day and the forthcoming festive season. “Trainees will be able to use their newly acquired skills to produce similar marketable items with their own variations and innovations. “These they then can sell to earn a muchneeded income for their families, many of whom are poverty-stricken.” At the Masjidul Mosque in Belhar 10 unemployed ladies were also taken through a full beadwork programme. The facilitator Louisa Titus guided them through the programme which included five days of Basic Business Management (Micro-MBA) training. “Many ladies have already used their own initiative and produced beautiful marketable jewellery items which they have been selling.

MyCiTi’s universal accessibility policy has officially been named one of the most innovative policies in the world in terms of ensuring that all special needs passengers can make use of the service. The MyCiTi special needs facilities include tactile paving for the blind; boarding bridges to ensure level boarding between the stops, the stations and the bus; audible pedestrian crossings; and safety features including CCTV cameras. The international disability organisation Zero Project announced yesterday that it would highlight the MyCiTi policy on universal (special needs) access, as an “Innovative Policy 2014”. This will be mentioned in its forthcoming Zero Project Report. “We are delighted that the MyCiTi team’s contribution towards the creation of an inclusive city has been recognised. “The announcement coincides with International Day for Persons with Disabilities which is today,” said the city’s mayoral committee member for transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron.

Mosaic training ‘wow’ skills GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

There’s a wow factor making a difference in Bellville South. For the second time this year the community of Bellville South benefits because of a programme that WOWMovement ran at the Bellville South Youth and Women Centre. This organisation is known in Bellville South as a Non Profit Organisation that assists vulnerable women with various programmes offered to unemployed women at the Bellville South Youth and Women Centre. Joy Warries, WOWMovement founder and co-ordinator, said that for the second time this year 16 unemployed women were skilled in the art of mosaic. “We applied for funding at the Department of Economic Development for funding for this specific project,” she says. “The application was successful after the approval of the local councillor and the organisation could offer these unemployed women the chance to be skilled in the art of mosaic as well as the business tools to start a business out of their new-found skill.”

The women all received the tools necessary to start a mosaic business as well as hands-on training for the week. “Part of the training is an obligation to beautify a community area with mosaic,” added Warries. “The first project in March saw the group mosaic the volunteer statue on the civic centre premises. The latest group chose to donate four plaques with awareness ribbons mosaic on it to the clinic.” The plaques will be on display permanently in the information corner. These participants decided to donate the plaques on Monday 2 December to coincide with International World Aids Day. WOWMovement also used this opportunity to serve the staff with refreshments to thank them for the service that they render to the community. Local councillor Mercia Kleinsmith thanked the organisation for the difference that they are making in vulnerable women’s lives. Warries also invites unemployed women to register for the various programmes at the Centre. The Centre will reopen again in January 2014. Arcadia High School’s Alumni Association has high hopes of motivating learners at the school to achieve their positive potential. The group of former learners from the school in Bonteheuwel recently elected their executive with plans for positive change coming into full swing from next year. Newly elected secretary, Zelda Lategan, said that they were very excited about getting the organisation properly registered so that they could go ahead with plans for assisting at their alma mater. “Our main aim with this organisation is to motivate and empower the present learners to achieve something positive in life,” she says. “We see how too many of them succumb to the negative influences around them in the community and they give up on their education too easily. “Many of us came from the same disadvantaged circumstances, but our education

They must maintain ownership of it as an asset for them, and not allow others to destroy their children’s future.” Lategan concluded by calling on all former learners to join them in their activities. “We need all the help that we can get,” she says. “Arcadia produced some top achievers in past years and we want those achievers to become part of our organisation. “It’s not just money that we are after, even though we do want to start a bursary fund, but it’s about giving of your time to help us change the mindset of learners.” V For more information email Zelda on zelda.late gan@futureelectronics.com.

Police give safety tips for children The police want all children to remain safe and happy over the festive season. For this reason they have issued a list of guidelines to ensure kids understand what is acceptable and what is not. “The whereabouts of children remain the responsibility of parents, and we as adults should know at all times where our children are,” said Lt Col Andre Traut, a provincial spokesman. “Infants should never leave the sight of adults in public, especially on beaches and busy shopping malls. “Criminals use this time of the year to prey on softer targets and the fact that most people relax their vigilance to enjoy the holidays,” he said. “We encourage parents to communicate the dangers of crime, drug use and alcohol abuse to their children so that they are fully educated and prepared to deal with situations which could pose a threat to their personal safety.” Traut said an uninformed child was a greater target for criminals and more prone to be lured into a dangerous situation by an adult. The police have provided the following hints for children:

VThis means no one can force you to have sex, or to touch you in a sexual way without your consent, or force you to perform sexual activities you find unpleasant or humiliating. VBe open with your parents, teacher or friends if you came across, were asked or made to, have sexual intercourse with a person without your consent. VNever hitch-hike. VDo not walk alone at night. VDo not accept any offer from anybody. VRemember it is not your fault if you are sexually assaulted. VDo not allow anyone to touch you in a way that makes you uncomfortable. VBe firm and clear and say “No!” You have the right to do so. VDo not leave a party or social event with someone you do not know or have just met. VAt social events, do not leave your cold drinks or drinks unattended. VAsk friends to help you if you’ve said “No!”

The City of Cape Town’s 107 Call Centre is expected to increase its call volume over the festive season. “Statistics showed an increase of nearly 8 000 calls in December 2012, compared to the months before and after. The city expects a similar trend this festive season,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

The 107 line is a single emergency telephone number for use by all people living in and visiting Cape Town. Emergencies (including medical, crime, fire and traffic) can be reported to the 107 emergency number from a Telkom line, while cellphone users need to dial 021 480 7700. Call centre agents are trained to connect callers to the emergency service providers.

City’s new Liquor bylaw means extension of trading hours City council today approved the new bylaw: Control of Undertakings that Sell Liquor to the Public, 2013. The new bylaw is expected to be promulgated in the Provincial Government Gazette in January 2014 and will repeal all existing bylaws concerned with the sale of liquor. It is likely to come into effect on 1 February 2014. “The bylaw went through a rigorous public participation process, which is a testament to the city’s commitment to being an inclusive city,” says Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for economic, environmental and spatial planning.

“The bylaw allows for the possibility of extended trading hours during the week and on Sundays for off-consumption trade. “With the adoption of the bylaw, we believe that we have been sensitive to the need to balance the challenge of addressing the social impact of liquor trading without causing job losses and damage to the local economy,” he added. Applications for the extension of onconsumption trading hours can continue as normal. However, applications for the extension of off-consumption trading hours can only be made once the new bylaw is gazetted.

Shining examples of positive empowerment GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Some young ladies at Cravenby High are becoming shining examples of positive empowerment. Esmaralda Abrahams, a teacher at the school, has started Shine Girls for learners at the school and giving the girls a better chance at achieving positive things in their lives. She explained that this was part of an empowering programme for women, and they’ve embarked on the first step of that journey with a group of 51 young ladies, current learners at Cravenby High School. “The school serves learners coming from surrounding areas, where crime and violence is the order of day,” she says. “With a high rate of unemployment, drugs and gangsterism many of them are always at risk. Some of these learners come from very dysfunctional homes, where most of them are reared by either a single parent, in most cases the mother, or where they are growing up with a grandparent, or simply just a guardian. “These socio-economic factors have a great influence on their social abilities and learning as a whole.” The group recently celebrated the completion of the first part of the programme that focused on their emotional intelligence.

Unstable “Many of these young girls are emotionally unstable due to the many challenges that they face at school and in their communities,” continued Abrahams. “The programme was hosted over a six-week period, which was the first phase, but we are going to continue in 2014. “A major factor is that the girls really enjoyed it and

there were many requests to add more value, by branching out with many more programmes, which could assist them in discovering their potential.” Abrahams already has lots of plans for next year but some of them require involvement from the community. “I want to have badges and special blazers made for them but I need help,” she says. “If there are people out there who care they must join me by ‘adopting’ a child in the project. “Then I would also like community members with skills in drama, music, dance, to come forward as I would like to start these workshops. “I also intend starting workshops on HIV/Aids, sport and coaching especially swimming, hockey, and drummies to come forward and assist.

Grooming “There is also the need for somebody to help with a special grooming and courtesy course, to round them off as ladies, in dress, makeup, and hair care. “Career guidance is also important so I need the support of institutions on tertiary level to come in and host workshops with them. “It is a long list of needs for this project so I am appealing to the community members who have a heart and keen interest to make a difference, by stepping in to assist on a voluntary basis.” Listening to the some of the participants speaking at the celebration it is easy to understand this teacher’s enthusiasm for making a difference in their lives. Many of them had discovered a new yearning for life through friendships they had made, and knowledge that through understanding other’s needs it would help them in their own journey of discovering themselves. V Abrahams can be contacted on 021 931 4470 next year.

Tickle your fancy? GrandWest will offer free entertainment for youngsters from Thursday 12 December running through to 11 January, including face painting, magic shows, ChristFmas arts and crafts, juggling, drumming, stiltwalking, storytelling, balloon twisting, break dancers, a ballerina, sand art, a cartoon ist, a hula hoop dancer, Christmas beads, cookie decoration, clown face painting and visits by Father Christmas in the week leading up to Christmas Day.

Eerstens sal almal hul mede-landgenote vergewe. Niemand sal meer met ’n wrok in sy hart rondloop oor ’n sekere mens of groep wat hom of haar in die verlede ingedoen het nie. Rasseharmonie sal hoogty vier.

Waar be gin ’n mens dan? - Anoniem V Dear Alison Samuels don’t be a pain in the butt. If you can’t sleep that time of the morning have sex or buy yourself a set of earplugs. Don’t complain about a beautiful noise. - Hein Fourie, Parow V We the Grade 7s of Silversands Primary thank all the teachers especially Miss Hendricks for everything they taught us. - Danielle Salomo V Tyger Valley was revamped just a year ago but yet the lifts at the food courts are forever out of order. It’s Xmas, come on now fix the lifts. - Pat V I just received my new benefits for 2014 from my medical aid; shocking is not the word. If I stay on my current option I can only go for a mammogram at the age of 45, if I go to the more expensive option they cover mammogram from age 40 – its clear they are not thinking of their mem bers. Shame on you! - Anonymous V Ek dink dis ’n uitstekende idee, Willie (“Employ them with a broom and bag”, TB Durbanville, 04/12).

Ek het vandag weer so ’n geval gehad.

Doen asseblief iets! GESTREMDE PERSOON Epos

Don’t make your problems mine! I have noticed a growing trend in the way people dump garden refuse and tree cuttings over their back walls onto public open spaces – out of sight out of mind mentality. In particular Brackenfell along Frans Conradie Drive, starting at Paradys Street through to Okovango Road and up to the N1. Dear neighbour when you dump like this, your problem is solved, but it now becomes a neighbourhood problem. Shame on you. We are proud of our neighbourhood and we are desperately trying to keep it neat and crime-free in conjunction with SAPS and the city. Please do your share. The city is to be commended for their endeavours in keeping our suburb neat and tidy. Keep up the good work. I recommend Law Enforcement visit this area mentioned and issue fines to the guilty parties for illegal dumping. Should you be aware of your neighbour doing the same, please report it to Law Enforcement. They will react positively to the complaint. Trusting everyone will work together. COLIN MALAN Brackenfell

It’s an important thing to bring happiness to people, you also become happy.” Besluit as gesin of familie saam op ’n organisasie of individue/gesinne vir wie ’n donasie of geskenke werklik ’n verskil sal maak. ANTI“MATERIAL GIRL” Durbanville

Racing cars keeping us all awake at night Every Thursday night at around 23:00 at the Sasol garage in Belhar cars are driving like hell and I call 10111 almost every week. It is a great disturbance, we can’t sleep. They race and the car silencers make a horrible noise. I’m sure the cops know about this, why is it that police don’t do anything about it? Please help, it is becoming a huge problem. What of babies and sick people? ANON Belhar

’N SPRANKIE SIELKUNDE ST Potgieter

Onstabiele gemoed kan lewe sleg beïnvloed

D

V Dr. ST Potgieter, tel: 021 949 5007 of epos: st@pitkos.co.za.

“There’s hope inside him, but he’s a very sad and moody character.” That’s how Bellville’s Nathan Fredericks describes Eeyore, the sombre donkey he will be playing in Winnie the Pooh, a children’s production being staged at Artscape Theatre until 21 December. “But he also has a sense of humour, as dry as it comes,” Fredericks adds about the character. Fredericks says he remembers the stories of Winnie the Pooh from his childhood well, but points out that Eeyore wasn’t always his favourite character. He says he remembers thinking: “Why’s this thing so sad?” Fredericks has played Eeyore four times now, and the character has grown on him. “I remain true to the essence of the character,” he says. Fredericks explains says the acting bug bit him as a learner at The Settler’s High School. The school has an active drama department and while Fredericks says he sang as a child, he was a bit hesitant to sign up for one of their musicals. A friend did so on his behalf though and when he was called for an audition he went, purely because he was scared he would get into trouble if he didn’t. And so, Fredericks got his first small part in The King and I. “It was electrifying, it woke me up,” Fred-

ericks says. Despite his interest in acting, Fredericks says he knew his parents wanted him to study a subject that would lead to a stable, well paying job. “My fear of disappointing them led me to lie and say I wanted to study law,” Fredericks admits. It was after he got a scholarship to study at the University of Cape Town that Fredericks says his mother showed her support. Like many young actors, Fredericks dreamt of seeing his face on the screen, but says: “Through studying I realised that I do actually love theatre.” “I love the journey of characters,” Fredericks says. Parents and their little ones can have the opportunity to see him take one of these journeys as Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh. In this production, Winnie the Pooh, who lives in the Hundred Acre Wood, wakes up one snowy day and goes to his friend Piglet’s home to tell him about the snow, only to find that Piglet is out looking for him. Written by Alan Alexander Milne, Cheryl Abromowitz directs a strong cast made up of Matthew Clarke, Dirk Joubert, Jocelyn Roskilly, Nikki Turner, Nicholas Haupt (10), Isabella Terespolsky (14), Emma-Rose Blacher (10), Lia Sachs (6) and Shani Sachs (5). V Performances take place at Artscape Theatre be tween December 10 and 21, daily at 10:30. V Tickets cost R70 and are available at Computicket or at Artscape Dialaseat on 021 421 7695. V No children under one year old and no prams al lowed.

AniPals gets awarded for educating public cation Department with three full-time staff members who, in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa, reach out to educate the communities of Cape Town and surrounds on animal welfare related matters,” she said. She said although they educated people of all ages, their main focus was to reach the younger generation. “We need to cultivate a whole new generation of Capetonians who know the importance of caring for and respecting not only animals, but all life. “Sadly though, life skills such as animal care and compassion are often those left by the wayside in official school curricula. A crucial component of our education efforts is therefore our Ani-Pals Education and mobile clinic programme, which attempts to address this shortfall...” Villet-Greeff said the Ani-Pals celebrated their 10th anniversary this year and over the past decade the SPCA educators have visited more than 600 schools and reached over 108 000 learners on responsible pet care.

shur Petersen, the son of music legend, Taliep Petersen, will commemorate the anniversary of his father’s death with his show Like Father, Like Son. Ashur will be performing the music tribute to his Father at the Artscape Theatre on 15 and 16 December. The show, produced by Petersen and Carl Biggs is a tribute to Taliep Petersen and is made up of a collection of intimate stories drawn together with the songs that become the soundtrack of 21-year-old Ashur’s life, while he shares stories of the special moments he shared with his father.

Celebrate He explains that he is doing the show, which he staged for the first time in April this year, a second time, due to popular demand. “The first time I did it was because I wanted to celebrate my dad’s birthday,” Ashur says, adding: “This time round it’s to celebrate his life and his music.” The year marks seven years after Taliep Petersen, a wellknown singer, composer and director was killed. Ashur was just 14 and says: “The beginning was very hard for me.” He says that he found creative outlets like art, music and writing to cope with his loss. “That was my way of dealing with it,” he says. Journey Ashur will uses images and songs close to his heart to take the audience on a candid family journey, to meet the man he sim-

ply called “Dad”. “A lot of people know the Taliep Petersen side of my dad, but not his father side,” Ashur says. He talks about the horror of the murder trial surrounding his dad’s death and finding out he had passed away. “It’s very exposing,” Ashur says, adding: “Over the years we were always in the public eye. I’m kind of used to it now.” Backed by a live band, audiences can expect Ashur to perform songs like “Rosa, Il Mondo”, “Queen of Hearts”, “Moon River” and a couple of melodies from popular productions by Taliep Petersen and David Kramer along with a few of Ashur’s own songs. One of these is a song called “Sound of Cape Town”. “I channelled the way my dad would write music,” Ashur says of the song, adding: “So it sounds like something my dad wrote.”

Projects When he isn’t working on solo music, Ashur is also part of a music group, Die Jaloersbokkies. He runs SA Fire Productions and is involved with the band, SA Fire. He is also involved in a project called Sound of Cape Town which aims to showcase untapped musical talent in Cape Town. Ashur says following in his father’s footsteps was not something he thought about when he was younger. “I wasn’t ready yet,” he says. Now that he has been taking steps on his father’s path, Ashur reflects honestly: “I realise that his shoes are too big to fill.” V Tickets for Like Father, Like Son cost between R100 and R150 and are avail able at Computicket.

The Cape of Good Hope (CoGH) SPCA’s education programme is ranked among the top. This was highlighted when their Ani-Pals Education and mobile clinic programme received a Silver Award for excellence on Sunday 1 December at the Baxter theatre in Cape Town. The Impumelelo Social Innovation Awards Gala Evening is held annually to showcase projects such as the Ani-Pals. “The Silver Award is accompanied by a cash donation of R20 000, which assists us in replicating and expanding this project, LiseMarie Villet-Greeff, CoGH spokeswoman, said. “It is one of the few mechanisms that uncovers what is good and what works in South Africa.” She said their aim at the CoGH SPCA was to prevent cruelty to animals by putting a stop to abuse and neglect, by bringing an end to domestic animal overpopulation and by promoting proper care and protection of all animals. “This is why, at the SPCA, we run an Edu-

Over 6 000 pet sterilisations have also been done. The central goal of the Ani-Pals programme is to teach youngsters animal teaching skills, to nurture understanding and to motivate responsibility and encourage compassion, she said. “What is very important to realise about Ani-Pals, is that it does not only teach kids how to fill a water bowl, how many times to put food out for their dogs, what length the leash should be or when your puppy should be vaccinated, and such,” she said. The programme also assists in decreasing the number of high-risk roaming animals and helps to eradicate zoonotic disease (that can spread between humans and animals). “Furthermore, Ani-Pals teaches respect. Ani-Pals nurtures compassion. And not only towards animals, but respect and compassion for all life,” she said. They do this by arranging permission with schools to take animal care education directly to children in their classrooms – in

an interactive puppet show format. “In order to further improve retention and extend the longevity of the programme’s immediate impact, each learner is provided with a curriculum-based activity and assignment booklet on responsible pet care, which they complete as part of class activities.” These are Western Cape Education Department approved. In the last financial year Ani-Pals took its puppet show and education programme to 104 schools. At 10 of these schools Ani-Pals went one step further and implemented its extended programme that includes a pet sterilisation and mobile clinic component. This extended programme encourages the learners not only to take the knowledge learnt back to their home and family, but to also ask their parents’ permission to bring their pet to school and have it sterilised by the CoGH SPCA. Derde ry: Nicol Theart, Tristan Webster, Romano Mento, Georgi Krastev, Franco Vermeulen, Liam Witbooi, Leigh Heinrich, Franco Beukes en CarlPhillip Lehmann. Mountain biking kicks off in style quota, and that all riders who wish to compete, may enter. Cycling SA has opened the African Continental Champs up for maximum participation to create greater opportunities and to be of greater benefit to riders. The Elite, under-23 and Junior UCI category riders must compete in SA National Federation kit. Please contact Dellah Paul for your kit requirements, on dellah@cyclingsa.com. The Sub-Veteran, Veteran, Masters, Youth, Sub Junior, Sprogs and Nippers will be competing in the Africa Challenge. Now

four years old, the popular Slammer track at Willowbridge has been an inclusion on the SA National XCO Cup Series calendar for the past two seasons. Located on the banks opposite the Willowbridge Shopping Centre, the location provides easy spectator viewing along most of the course. Track builder Bryan Strauss and his team of volunteers have been working hard to create a course that is suitable for all the various age categories, yet challenging enough for the top riders. Two different tracks will

ATHLONE, KLIPFONTEIN ROAD, (next to Hire-it) OPEN EVERY SUNDAY 10:30AM - 2:00PM

be used on the day: the shorter track for Nippers, and the longer for all the others. The slopes of Contermanskloof in Durbanville will come alive once again for the DHI competition. The trail venue is a 20-minute drive from Cape Town, and the working farm’s mountain bike trails welcome visitors on a regular basis on the weekends. The course drops 236 m in 1.29 km. Pre-entries close on Tuesday 21 January. Late entries will be accepted (at R50). For any further information, please contact Dellah Paul, dellah@cyclingsa.com.
