According to Charlene Mekel of Spar, they asked their retailers to bring a gift for a child to their AGM. “Most of them bring more than one. I would like to use this opportunity to thank them for their generosity,” says Charlene. More than 200 gifts were collected this year.

DISABILITIES: EMPOWERMENT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL ABILITIES

he International Day of persons with disabilities was celebrated locally with organisations meeting to make their voices heard.

“Inclusion matters: Access and empowerment for people of all abilities” was the theme that was endorsed last Thursday to observe this year’s event.

The theme was launched by the United Nations for 2015 to draw attention on the situation of people with invisible disabilities such as mental health and psychosocial disabilities, intellectual disabilities as well as

hearing (and visual) impairments.

To give prominence to the day locally, a disability resource fair was held at the Bishop Lavis rehabilitation centre where the public could access information, products and services.

Lorenzo Williams, chairperson of the newly formed Bishop Lavis disability organisation, was very happy about this awareness programme and said that the formation of this organisation was to unify the voices of the disabled in the area.

“We will be having regular meeting where we will be discussing their needs,” he said.

“Our focus will include our rights to accessible environments as well as education and

training.”

Some sobering facts about disability are that 20% of the world’s poor are disabled; the percentage of children with disabilities not attending school is between 65 to 85% in some African countries; the mortality for children with disabilities may be as high as 80% and in many low-income and middle-income countries, only 5 to 15% of people with disabilities who require assistive devices and technology such as hearing aids, have access to them (UN, 2015).

Dr Diane Bell, director of academic affairs at USB executive development and member of the Presidential working group on disability said that the International Day of persons

with disabilities, a United Nations sanctioned day, has been celebrated since 1992 as a means to promote an understanding of people with disability and to encourage support for their dignity, rights and well-being.

“The main driver is to work towards ensuring an inclusive and accessible society for all,” she said.

“Considering that approximately one billion people worldwide have some form of disability and are faced with many challenges which prevent them from enjoying access to society on an equal basis with others, this is an important initiative..

Big smiles on little faces E

mergency Medical Services (EMS) Tygerberg’s communication centre proved they’re also about putting smiles on young faces.

They embarked on a project to boost the morale within the organisation by giving back and putting smiles on the faces of less fortunate children in need.

Robert Daniels, principal communications officer of EMS, explained they contacted social services and inquired about local children’s homes in need of social upliftment.

“They told us that the Holy Cross home in Ravensmead that housed children, is often overlooked by charitable outreach,” he said.

“This facility has 105 children ranging from 2 to 18 who have either been abandoned or their living circumstances are unsafe.

“EMS decided to do something similar to the Santa Shoebox project and introduced Tubs of Kindness, but with 5l ice cream tubs which the children could later use as personal storage.”

All the EMS staff members drew names of the children with their ages and bought age appropriate gifts.

The tubs contained the basic necessities such as toiletries and stationery but staff far exceeded the requested goodies by adding toys, clothing and treats.

Daniels said there was lots of excitement when they went to deliver the presents at the end of November.

“Emergency vehicles entered the grounds of the home with full sirens to announce our arrival.

“Dr Julian Fleming, manager of Western Cape Government health, medical support services was our Father Christmas and his son as Connor the Elf, assisted with the distribution of gifts.

“All staff members present spent time interacting with the children and they made us all feel very welcome.”

Father Christmas’ arrival at the Holy Cross Home was welcomed by the children.

He also added they would like to thank the City of Cape Town fire and rescue services, the EMS rescue services and the Tygerberg emergency communication centre for the assistance in making the day a success and for brightening up and spending the day with these kids as they were very appreciative with the gifts they received, but even

more so for EMS spending the day with them.

“Our personnel were so moved by the children’s stories that EMS has officially adopted the Holy Cross Home for the next year and we have many more upliftment projects planned to increase their skills but also improve their environment.”

“We always strive to make people aware of the rights of the disabled,” she said.

“There are still too many incidents in our communities where the disabled are abused by their families and we want to make them aware of their rights. Police must also act strongly to help these people when they report the crimes to them.”

Computer literacy workshop Kalkfontein Primary School is inviting all matriculants and young adults to attend a computer literacy workshop in the school’s computer laboratory.

The workshop is intended to help those who have finished school to be better prepared for their careers as well as their tertiary studies.

Patient waits 2 nights in chair MAGRIET THERON @magrietron

A

man admitted to the Tygerberg hospital trauma unit with bleeding private parts last Monday had to wait more than 60 hours before he was seen by a specialist.

Most of this time, says Zipho Langa (22) from Philippi, was spent on a chair in the waiting area while he had severe stomach cramps and bled after an injury at work.

“I was scared that I might bleed right through my jeans. I kept thinking about the consequences (of the injury),” he says.

Langa says he saw a lot of people coming in with stab- and gunshot wounds, who had to sit on chairs also while waiting to be tended to.

After two nights on a chair in the waiting area, he was taken for scans and was al-

lowed to sleep in a bed between 01:00 and 06:00 before he had to hand it over to another patient. On Thursday he saw a urologist, was taken to theatre, fitted with a catheter and discharged.

Langa says he is better now, despite going home with an infection.

According to Laticia Pienaar, spokesperson of Tygerberg hospital, the Trauma Unit saw close to 100 cases on the particular evening.

“These patients ranged from minor injuries to critically ill patients. According to the SATS (the triage system) all patients presented to the trauma unit will be assessed and those who are triaged red and orange will have preference over those triaged yellow and green. Langa was triaged as yellow and his condition was not life threatening,” she says.

Pienaar says resources have to be di-

rected to those who require lifesaving intervention. This makes it impossible for everyone in this unit to have a bed.

“Langa arrived at the trauma section at approximately 20:40. He was triaged by our nursing personnel at 20:45 and seen by a trauma doctor at 21:15.

“Because of the type of injury, he required specialised imaging testing before he could be referred to the specialist doctor. Due to large influx of patients requiring emergency care, it was impossible to do all special investigative tests in quick succession,” she says.

Pienaar says all the investigations are now in place for further management.

Langa says since being discharged, he has seen his local doctor who prescribed antibiotics for the infection. He says he has a follow-up appointment with the Tygerberg urologist in January.

Nearly 600 arrested in Blue Downs cluster The police in the Blue Downs cluster made several arrests this past week relating to a wide range of crimes committed.

The cluster includes the Mfuleni, Kleinvlei, Kuils River, Belhar, Ravensmead, Bellville South and Elsies police stations.

Captain Nomathemba Muavha, police spokesperson, said this week a total of 585 criminals were put behind bars through what they call disruptive operations.

Muavha said 28 suspects were kept overnight and released on fines.

“They committed crimes like being drunk in public or riotous behaviour,” she said.

n with the new, out with the old. This old adage rang especially true when The Settlers High principal Richard Daly recently passed the baton to a worthy successor.

At his farewell assembly on Tuesday 1 December, Daly officially inaugurated Shereen Gallie as The Settlers’ new principal.

Gallie is currently serving her last days before the December school holidays as the deputy head of Fairmont High.

One of the prominent messages shared was that change was inevitable. This is no mean feat for Daly, the longest serving teacher in the history of the school, with an incredible 37 years of service.

“Mr Daly contributed greatly to the use of technology in the school environment and saw the erection of the Webster Auditorium, Daly Walkway, Astro Turf and the campus development,” said a school press club member, Jaimey-Ann Dyers.

“Head prefects Ruth Jantjies and Vivek Abraham spoke fondly of Daly’s passion for

inclusivity, be it for The Settlers to be an open school during the apartheid years or allowing all learners, despite their physical impediments, to reap the benefits of the holistic education that The Settlers offers.”

Daly was then awarded an honours blazer from the new prefects for 2016 – the school’s highest award given to a prestigious recipient, after which three learners – Tanaka Bento, Neena Adams and Keanu Jansen – performed an original song while a slideshow showing Daly’s evolution at the school was shown.

In his speech, Daly asked the school to uphold the traditions and ethos of the school.

He asked learners to give their best in all that they do and become leaders.

Daly handed Gallie her own academic gown as well as the school’s traditional Khoi gown, while head prefects of 2015, Keenan Jacobs and Christine Ile, handed her the flag of the African Union, which will now be displayed on the The Settlers’ premises.

Gallie also received the original key used to open the school building.

There was plenty of excitement when the I­CAN centre in Elsies River hosted their gaming day as a warm­up to their holiday programme. Some took it a step further and added to the excitement as these players battled it out with a rugby game.

There were some frantic fingers working at The I-CAN centre in Elsies River when they hosted an exciting gaming competition day on Saturday.

Aimed at teenagers from the community and surrounding areas it was filled with excitement as young people took to the TV screens and terminals for a day of digital fun.

Llewellyn Scholtz, founder of the centre, was very impressed with the level of expertise but said there was also a serious side to hosting the day.

“One of our main aims was to establish an awareness of the I-CAN centre,” he said.

“With this event we also gave teenagers who love gaming to meet other youth who share their love for gaming.

“We also want to spot those rising talents and encourage them to visit here regularly to improve their levels. Gaming today has overtaken the life of teenagers. Not only that, but research has shown people learn effectively through gaming.”

Scholtz said that parents were also very proud when their children were awarded with medals and trophies for games like FIFA soccer, rugby and other games.

The centre aims to empower all citizens through technology to obtain digital skills.

“This Western Cape Government initiative aims to bridge the gap of the digital divide through affordable and accessible courses to upskill the community. Genesis Community IT Initiative, who drives this project aims to transform the community through technology,” concluded Scholtz.

lthough the matrics of Voorbrug High School are waiting for their results, they were assured of a nutritional head start while they were writing.

For the past three years a family near the school has been providing the learners with a hearty breakfast or lunch on the days that they wrote exams.

Carol-Ann Johnson is the coordinator of this initiative that provided up to 30 learners with a meal so that they would not be writing on “empty” stomachs.

She explained that the idea started with her mom when her sister was in matric.

“My sister mentioned how she felt that there were fellow learners who did not have something to eat before they wrote,” she said.

“My mother felt she had to do something about it and we started with some learners from Voorbrug as well as from Excelsior where my sister went.”

Johnson is very happy that they were able to motivate these learners this year but feels it is time for it to grow.

“We have been doing it with no official sponsors or money from any organisation with my mom still involved and volunteers from our church also lending a hand. Jackie Tuck, a shop in the area, has been helping us with milk while the AGS Church in Delft helped with a financial donation.

“Now my mom’s dream must grow and we want to see this idea spread to all schools in the area. We want more people involved and show our matrics that the community cares about them.”

Johnson also had a secret wish for all the volunteers.

Local helps new study A Bellville academic was one of the contributing authors to an international paper linking more intense and aggressive tobacco advertising with people living in poor countries.

University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) Professor Ehimario Igumbor, extraordinary associate professor of Epidemiology, helped write the findings of the study.

The study showed tobacco sales were falling in high-income countries and that its future sales were dependent on getting young people hooked on smoking in low-income countries. The sale of single cigarettes, for example, is an important way of attracting children who can’t afford to buy a whole packet of cigarettes.

The study is the first to compare levels of tobacco marketing statistically across a wide range of countries since 2005.

This was when countries that were signed up to the World Health Organisation’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) were required to adopt strict tobacco control measures, including marketing bans.

Between 2009 and 2012, the researchers recorded the number of tobacco advertisements and outlets selling tobacco products along a one- kilometre walk in 462 communities across 16 countries.

Tobacco related diseases are the single most important cause of preventable deaths in the world. It is projected that tobacco use will cause 8.4 million deaths by 2020, 70% of which will occur in developing countries, where about 900 million smokers live.

children’s home in Belhar got an early Christmas present when a local information technology company donated a computer lab to them.

Cyber Digital Technologies is an IT security and telephony company based in Belhar who along with some partners made the special donation when they hosted an open fun day as well as an art exhibition of local artists.

Technical director Timothy Riddles explained that with the help of their partners Cape Union Mart, Toyota Forklift, Metropolitan Health group and Distell the children at the uMephi satellite children’s home will be empowered.

“We were able to donate a small computer lab with four terminals and a multifunctional printer to them,” he said.

“Good foundations are essential to a child’s development, therefore we will continue to empower orphanages by setting up labs assisting with the development of children on the Cape Flats and surrounding areas.

“We would like to encourage individuals and companies alike. If it is in your capacity please support our plight and partner with us so that our children of today can be the great leaders of tomorrow.”

House parents Karel and Rosie Steyn were very thankful of the donation that will improve the lives of their charges.

“This is a big boost for our children,” says Karel.

“We would like to thank CDT for their efforts because this is going to play a big role to motivate the children in their future education.”

assing the Counselling and Social Development Centre in Bishop Lavis on Saturday you may have thought that there some serious battles were fought.

You would have been mistaken because the centre was abuzz with women eager to learn the techniques of self protection.

Facilitating the event was Margaret Neethling who also does regular self-defence classes there during the week.

“Despite the sweltering heat the women took the training seriously and under the guidance of Sanette Smit, the chief instructor and her Stay Safe team of experienced self defence instructors, the women learned how to punch, poke, kick and fight back in the event of an attack to the throat or a grab from behind,” she said.

“We would like to thank the sponsors that enabled the Stay Safe team to present the workshop to the participants at no cost.

ome 359 confiscated taxis are currently crammed into the City of Cape Town’s taxi pound which has been filled to capacity since September this year.

According to city ward councillors in Brackenfell and Kraaifontein the situation is untenable as it prevents effective policing on one of the area’s busiest main taxi routes, being Old Paarl Road, where illegal taxis could not be confiscated.

Traffic official Stanley Opperman informed the councillors of this state of affairs when they questioned the traffic enforcement statistics for the month of September – it reflected a zero for taxi impoundments for the period.

Countless reports of lawless taxi drivers on this specific route are received on a weekly basis.

To address the problem, the City will hence hold monthly auctions as well as expanding their vehicle storage facilities.

“Auctions require various logistical arrangements including verifying a vehicle’s status with the South African Police Service and whether it can be sold on auction.”

Vehicles that are deemed to be unsafe to be allowed on the road are crushed.

he Lilliput Children’s Theatre Company is heading back to the stage – this time with The Elves and the Shoemaker.

They’ll be presenting the popular show at the Nassau Theatre in Newlands at 10:00 daily from Thursday 10 to Friday 18 December.

This modern spin on the magical fairytale takes place in Cape Town were a shoemaker lives with his wife. They are very poor and are worried that they will not be able to sell any shoes. Two young elves pay them a visit and make it the best time they have ever had.

The Vision 2000 skills project in Delft is celebrating an early Christmas present from SA Breweries.

When representatives from SAB popped around to the home of chairperson Deon Britz last week, they could see first hand why their donation of two new industrial sewing machines would be put to good use.

The place was a hive of activity as the organisation was busy completing orders for their work that has become sought after in the industry after starting up earlier this year.

Britz was very excited with the second donation from the company.

“This means we will be able to employ 10 more unemployed women from the community,” he said.

“We have a big contract that will provide for the payment of salaries to the women, bringing our workforce up to 28 women who will be able to put food on the table for their children.”

Britz also pointed out that they have been working on important partnerships in the industry to improve and expand their activities.

“We are busy with CPUT/ Technology Station: Clothing &

Textiles and Clotex to help us with our training needs in the new year.

“Within the new year we would also like to move into our building and to employ more women from our communities.

“We are very happy that SAB has once again donated machinery to our project.”

Rowan Dunne from SAB Corporate Affairs said that they were very impressed with the activities of the project.

“This year our focus has been socio-economic development programmes that focus on job creation, income generation and skills development,” he said.

“Since our initial investment last year into Vision 2002, the organisation has demonstrated that they are using the machines effectively and that they are capable of obtaining contracts from clothing retailers.

“They are becoming a sustainable organisation which generates its own income, enables women from Delft working on the project to earn an income and possibly find permanent employment.

“It therefore only makes sense that we are part of the next step to ensure that Vision 2002 can become a self-sustaining community benefit organisation.”

“Ed­Electric” from Elsies River is the current South African cruiserweight champion and defending Royal Rumble title holder.

he AWA (Africa Wrestling Alliance) Coca-Cola Royal Rumble will have the crowd on their feet on Friday night at the Parow Civic Centre.

The event, which has fast become one of the most thrilling pro-wrestling shows on this continent, is built around the climactic rumble match.

This is the battle that sees more than 20 warriors clawing it out in an over-the-toprope-onto-the-floor match for the coveted Coca-Cola Royal Rumble championship belt.

The winner gets to flaunt the strap for a full year before trying to maintain it in the following year’s rumble rampage.

Many of the federation’s top stars have used the title to launch stellar careers and 2014’s event saw Ed-Electric capture the prize and, along with winning the cruiser-

he news that double world sports car champion Jan Lammers is being teamed with South African legend Sarel van der Merwe and Dr Greg Mills in a G55 Ginetta in the Africa 9-Hour endurance race at Killarney on Saturday, has given the event prime international status.

With probably more competitive experience than any visiting driver since the northern suburbs circuit was opened in 1960, the Dutch veteran has proven over the years that he is more of a top class marathon runner than a sprinter.

The result has been that although he spent many seasons in Formula 1 with lesser known teams like Shadow, ATS, Ensign and the ill-fated Theodore squad, his greatest successes have been in long distance sports car events.

As Sarel van der Merwe is also a previous Daytona 24-Hour winner (1984), Lammers remarked when asked that although he has never had Supervan as a co-driver, they have competed against one another on several occasions.

The most notable of these was at Le Mans in 1988 when Jan drove the winning Jaguar and Sarel was at the wheel of one of the Porsches that was not far behind.

On Saturday the fastest cars at Killarney are going to have to complete more than 300 laps at maximum speed.

Pit stops will have to be made for driver changes, new tyres and refueling.

In addition, while Formula 1 cars are only stationary for a few seconds, less experienced crews without the specialised equipment could be kept busy for several minutes.
