) Melkbosstrand High ready for 2012
School to open doors LEON STEENKAMP
Learners of the new Melkbosstrand High School will start their school year in January, despite the building only set to be completed in March. The opening of the new R26 million school in the second semester of 2012 was one of the problems residents had with the initial planning that went into the project. According to Dr Ruan Kleynscheldt, the interim headmaster of the school, things are however on track for the school to start operating in January.
“The headmaster at Bloubergrant High School was kind enough to offer us a part of his school to use in the first semester,” said Kleynscheldt, who is part of the interim governing body that was elected on 14 November. The group of around 100 Grade 8 and 9 learners who have thus far enrolled for next year will be divided into four classes, with an Afrikaans and English class for each of the grades. “We will start off with only Grade 8 and 9 classes, with a grade being added each year, until we have our Grade 12 class in 2015,” he explained.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
At Bloubergrant the Melkbosstrand learners will have their own entrance to their part of the school and their own playground. Kleynscheldt said of the learners that have enrolled some 60 percent are from Melkbosstrand, with others from Parklands and Atlantis. “We will aim to have our numbers at about 30 learners per class. Not too big but also not too small,” he said. The official school uniform is also still in the process of being finalised. “Learners will dress in jeans and a golf shirt with the school’s logo on it. Uniforms will be ready in the second semester,” he said.
A bus will be on hand to transport children from Melkbosstrand to Bloubergrant High School. “The interim governing body consists of three representatives of the Western Cape Education Department, two parents and myself,” Kleynscheldt said, adding that a new complete governing body will be elected in March. A new principal has already been appointed. Mr Daniel Ross, previously the principal of Hoërskool Dirkie Uys in Moorreesburg, will start at the new school in January. Kleynscheldt said a code of ethics for the school has already been drawn up “to ensure that the stand-
ard remains high” from the start. Kleynscheldt expressed his gratitude towards the manner in which the Melkbosstrand community has embraced the new school. “We have people who don’t even have children who contributed towards getting the school off the ground. A local church has already volunteered a counsellor to work with the children for free,” he said. “What is wonderful is that the parents are so enthusiastic. and excited about the school ... every time something new is announced they cheer and clap hands. That is very important for a school, to have enthusiastic parents,” he said.
