undreds of kilometres from Cape Town the first of a series of cold fronts forms. The cooler, denser air wedges itself under the warmer air and a low pressure system is born. By Monday last week it had determinedly made its way to the West Coast. The wet week started modestly with 0.4 mm of rainfall over Robben Island at

17:00 and an hour later over the Royal Yacht Club. The first front, as well as those in its wake, brought with them buckets of rain, gale force winds, cold temperatures and an array of headaches for those on the ground.

Warning SA Weather sent out warnings to the public on Tuesday and the Disaster Risk Management Centre was on alert. Then a series of cold fronts hit Cape Town and it felt as if the entire Atlantic Ocean was

falling from the sky. By Thursday the City of Cape town had spent over R2.6 million on relief provisions to residents affected by the heavy rain. The city’s Disaster Relief Management team, Provincial Department of Social Development, South African State Security Agency and numerous non-governmental organisations worked together to distribute “relief packages” to vulnerable residents. Parts of Ou Skip Caravan Park, Vue Du Cap Retirement Village and Milnerton Aquatic Club flooded and members of the

Milnerton riding club used a jet-ski to retrieve valuable equipment from the stables before it washed away. The Diep River overflowed and left parts of Marine Drive, Racecourse Road bridge, Woodbridge and Rietvlei under water. It would have been possible for someone to canoe up Koeberg Road! The path along Sunset Beach resembled a river, the Vissershok Road next to the N7 flooded and the new bridge over Diep River got its first rigidity test. V To page 2.

André Bakkes spoke to Fabian Higgins from Metro Emergency Medical Services about their daring sea rescue to help three women trapped under the capsized Miroshga in 2012.

Ou Skip Caravan Park’s manager, André Delport, says that despite the fact that they got off relatively light from the ordeal, the flooding hasn’t been this bad since the late 90s. “Emails circulated that there was some kind of crisis at Ou Skip, but that was an exaggeration. A couple of tents had to be moved and some of the chalets were flooded, but that was it,” says Delport. Frans Petersen from the Heron Waters body corporate for Vue Du Cap Retirement Village is very thankful for Community Police Forum chairperson Andrew Brace after parts of the complex were submerged. The Diep River overflowed its banks and then Brace managed to convince construction workers to dump some rubble on the bend of the river. This saved Vue Du Cap from serious damage according to Petersen. Pat Downing from the Milnerton Aquatic Club said on Thursday the staff have “sandbagged” the clubhouse and moved furniture to higher areas. Precautions paid off because the next day there was no access into the clubhouse through the toilet doors at the back due to the area being under water. The front verandah floor was also under water and also the lower level floor of the clubhouse bar area. Milnerton Riding Club’s Stephanie Frohlich says that the water came out of nowhere on Thursday and left again with equal hurry the next day. Unfortunately in that time virtually the

The Vue Du Cap Retirement Village was also briefly submerged in water from the Diep River when it flooded its banks.

The Milnerton Golf Course had to close for several days due to the flooding. Here people are making the most of the new water hazards. PHOTO: LEANNE STANDER/FOTO24 whole club was under water and about 50 horses had to be relocated to nearby farms. “We had to use a jet-ski to save some of the equipment,” she says. Frohlich admits that the damage is extensive. Gail Linnow, the client liaison officer at SA Weather’s Western Cape office says that

the rainfall is not out of the ordinary for Cape Town this time of year. Weather SA says that it is at this stage impossible to predict how long the winter will last this year, but that there ought to be fewer cold fronts and longer spells of warm weather from here on in. Let’s hope.

Burglars ‘putting us to sleep’ ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

S

ome Ysterplaat residents are claiming that people sedate them with drugs before breaking into their homes. This isn’t the first time such claims have been made and according to some the problem is more widespread than one can imagine. Maitland, Milnerton and Table View police spokespeople respond, however, that no such trend has been brought to their attention recently. This assurance doesn’t suffice for a traumatised woman from Ysterplaat who was burgled on Saturday evening.

Asleep “My husband and I are very light sleepers and someone managed to force open a window we have never managed to open before! The window cracked and through all the commotion our neighbours woke up. Yet, we were fast asleep,” she explains.

She also claims that from the moment she woke up on Sunday she had a headache, felt sleepy the whole day and her daughter who was also in the house when burglars came in said she smelled “something funny” that morning. The family was robbed of a sentimental ring, R2 000 cash and a laptop. Her alarm clock went off at about 05:30 that morning and when she looked at the bedroom window she saw a burglar trying to climb through the window.

Screamed She screamed and he ran away, and only then realised they slept through what according to her would have been quite a big noise. Rumours in the suburb have since taken hold. Many now believe burglars push a CD through the bottom of a door and light chemicals, which when inhaled would send a person into a deep sleep. Maitland Police spokesperson, W/O Siyabulela Vukubi says, however, that there is

no proof that this is a tendency. “How can people say something like this happened without some proof?” he asks. His colleagues at Milnerton and Table View police agree. Yet, such methods are becoming a problem with reports of these perpetrators in Gauteng using a type of gas to drug a victim before robbing him blind. These rumours have led to some in Ysterplaat taking extreme measures by pushing a towel tightly against their bedroom door before going to sleep. Ryno Roberts from Table View Neighbourhood Watch says he has been aware of such rumours for many years, but he has never come across it in his five years in the neighbourhood watch. “I think there’s a possibility that people are coming up with this excuse to cope with not waking up. “I’m not saying it’s impossible, but if there is no proof then one cannot assume something like this happened to you,” he concludes.

YOUR STORIES on www.tygerburger.co.za EK IS ‘N TYGERBURGER Nikki Pretorius

Devastation in Skandaalkamp

Skandaalkamp is one of four “bush” settlements on the dumpsite just outside of Table View. Over 260 families call it home. They have one portable toilet and one tap for every six families. There is no electricity available to residents. They rely on fire to cook and structures are built from whatever materials they can scavenge off the dumpsite. There are no roads, no jobs nearby, no public transport. They are on the doorstep of one of our major cities but they may as well be in the middle of Ethiopia. Their living conditions are desperate on a normal, sunshine day! With all the rain we have had in Cape Town in the last few days, it has become downright dangerous to be a resident here. Most shacks have no windows and roofs are mainly constructed from wooden beams and years of layers of plastic sheeting. Mould and damp have taken its toll on the shelters as well as the health of the occupants. Shelters are full of rot and moss grows on the wooden beams that are the support for the roofs. One of the residents is disabled. He relies on crutches for mobility, but his roof is held up by planks placed under the roof beams to keep them from collapsing. Water drips into buckets placed throughout his “home”.

It drips on his bed while he sleeps at night. His floor may not be under water, but everything he owns is damp. He has plastered his walls with cardboard as insulation from the cold. Cardboard fills the gap where normal homes would have glass windows. He is not alone, over 260 families live this way – in one settlement alone. There are three more settlements on the same dumpsite in very similar conditions. The people living here are good people, they have beautiful children with hopes of making something of themselves when they grow up one day, like a fireman, a policeman, a teacher – humble dreams for humble children. Working with these children has been the high point of my existence, they have repaid me tenfold in love! Seeing their little faces beam when they get a sandwich, a kiss, a hug or a second-hand item of clothing is what fuels my batteries to do more. City says net metering ‘just taking long time’ MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

T

he response to an article about net metering has been overwhelming. “Just an update. I am receiving about 100 phone calls a day,” said David Lipschitz, owner of a small consulting business. He was referring to the number of queries about net metering since TygerBurger reported on this household alternative to Eskom power on 7 August. Net metering means creating your own electricity through solar panels, and selling the excess to Eskom. At night though, when net meter users would have to depend on power from the Eskom grid, they would then be able to buy back electricity at the same cost as they had sold it to Eskom.

Inundated After the article, which included David’s details, he was inundated by phone calls and messages by people to whom electricity, bought at exorbitant prices from their municipalities, has become something of a luxury. “From 11:15 to 11:25 this morning I received 10 messages. That’s one a minute! People sound desperate,” he said. “Maybe we have reached the critical mass we need to make change happen,” David said. It seems he is right. People are quite fed-up. A reader, Freddie Hamman from Parow, explains his sentiments: “On 1 July I bought R300 worth of electricity, and received 327.30 units. On 24 July I bought R300 again, but received 142.2 units. That’s an increase of almost 120 %! To get an answer from the City of Cape Town is impossible,” Freddie said. Another reader, Disillusioned Resident from Goedemoed, stated in a letter to Tyger-

Burger that the City of Cape Town was a prime example of the importance of electricity sales as a major revenue source. He quoted from the city’s budget (using a table) to show how the city raises a 10 % surcharge on the sale of electricity, “quite legally. It does not disclose it as a tax, but hides in its tariffs. Thereby it attracts VAT, so National Treasury is also happy,” he said.

Costs “The surcharge is transferred to the Rates account, in the process inflating the published cost of electricity as reflected in the city’s budget. What chance does Joe Public have of ever enjoying the benefits of net metering?” he said. The city has since responded to the letter. “In response to the view held by ‘Disillusioned resident’ of Goedemoed, the city does in fact have plans to allow grid-connected Small Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) that will allow consumers to offset their own consumption.” This comment was received from Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for utility services. “To this end, the city has developed a tariff which includes a daily service charge, an energy consumption tariff, and a tariff for the purchase, by the city, of excess generation. “These tariffs will ensure that other consumers do not have to pay the generator/ consumers’ portions of the network cost, but that there is some level of compensation for those who make the capital investment to perform SSEG,” he said. “Although these small-scale generation tariffs have been approved, they have not yet been implemented. The city is working across numerous fronts (including the implementation of back office billing processes and the development of technical standards), to be able to do so. “Once this policy has been formulated and implemented, it will become far easier for residents to develop their own power and connect their generators to the grid. “Residents who are interested in this incentive are asked to be patient while the necessary steps are taken to ensure its success.” David is not holding his breath, though. As far back as 2009, he contacted the city about having net metering installed at a client’s farm. “Brian Jones (head of the city’s Green Energy department) said that the city was working on processes to allow ‘reverse feed’, that is, feeding electricity into the grid. “It is 2013 and this still has not been done. How long does it take government to do things? Note that the policy documents (the Renewable Energy White Paper) requiring this, were drawn up by the national government in 2003!” Alternatives In the meantime, David suggested the following alternatives: “Tell your (government) representatives that you wish to be involved in electricity savings and that you want to be able to work together to get the same benefits as the big industrial consumers,” he advised readers. “Eskom currently pays over R300 million per month to these big users as rebates and to switch off production when demand is high. “This is hurting the economy, destroying jobs, moving production overseas, hurting our exchange rate and pushing up the cost of goods and inflation. “In the meantime this R300 million per month could be paid to homeowners, perhaps as refunds on our electricity bills. “I am unsure which meter the Eskom representative (from the previous article) mentioned, but we are currently looking at installing meters at somewhere between R3 000 and R10 000 each,” he said. “If you buy electricity from Eskom you need to continue buying from Eskom. If you buy from the city, you need to continue to buy from the city,” he said. V For more on net metering, see David’s video called The five winners at www.mypowerstation.biz.

Nooshie’s shooter is still at large.

‘Coward’ takes pot shots at defenceless cat ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

A De Zuide Werf Complex resident in Parklands had to spend R8 000 on veterinary costs after her cat was shot with a pellet gun. Joey Volschenk’s 20-month-old “Nooshie” endured a torrid time after a solid lead pellet ripped through her cat’s bladder. Says Volschenk: “After surgery the vet explained that the pellet had missed a main artery, the colon and blood vessels by 1 mm but that it had cut straight through Nooshie’s bladder, which they had to repair.” Now Volschenk is on the warpath to find the “cowardly” perpetrator. “It is a cowardly act to shoot a defenceless animal, and an equally cowardly act to be quiet when you can help this situation,” she adds. Since the event Volschenk has recounted

the tale to the SPCA, a trustee member, De Zuide Werf residents and TygerBurger. “We work erratic hours so we decided to take a nap on Friday afternoon. I was awoken by odd growling at around 16:00. I looked under the bed and saw something was wrong with Nooshie. A combination of foam and drool was running out of his mouth. Then I noticed the blood. Nooshie was rushed to Table View Animal Hospital and we heard that the pellet was still stuck inside of him. They needed to take Nooshie to see a specialist at Panorama Animal Hospital. After the surgery, Nooshie was released stitched up, shaven and covered with a plaster on Saturday. His owners were handed a variety of pain medication, anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. “Today it was my defenceless animal, tomorrow it could be a child. It is unfair and cruel...” she concludes. V If anyone can help Volschenk find the perpetrator they can contact her on 073 665 7001.

Touching transplant tale of organ donation

Merle Less (Kuils Rivier), Marleine Douman (Table View), Tanya Schouw (Strandfontein), Noleen Bailey (Vasco) and Johanna Clarke (Manenberg) were guests at the high tea.

‘Stop, understand who you are’ JANA BEKKER

@elsiesgeselsies

“Drive and passion in life comes from pain and suffering. Uncertainty and negativity is what we grow from.” So said adventurer and inspirational speaker David Grier from Melkbos on Saturday 17 August when he spoke at a high tea at Bellville Catholic Church. David and his life-long David Grier. friend Braam Malherbe were the first two people in history to conquer the Great wall of China. This is but one of their adventures that David shared with high tea guests. Through their adventures, they raise funds for children with cleft lips. One out of 750 children is born with this. “Everyone here today is busy or has just finished a dream,” David said. He said during their journey, they picked up scars. “It is the life lessons that all of us learn, but it is up to you as an individual how you handle it,” he said. David said it was during the deep, dark moments in life that a person’s biggest growth comes from. To David, who has embarked on many

journeys over the last decade, one thing stands out – relationships. “The relationship with yourself is the most important one.” He also spoke about mistakes. “In life you let people down, but it is never too late to say you are sorry and move on,” he said. David said they wanted to inspire the youth through their journeys. He spoke about the team of people who worked with them to make their dreams a reality, saying that no one achieves anything of significance in life without a team. David said to make changes in life, you need to take a conscious decision. “No matter how small or insignificant you are, you can make a difference.” He said through their adventures and the money raised for the surgeries, they gave children back their self-respect. During their adventures the Nelson Mandela Foundation phoned David and gave them permission to run on Robben Island. “Every single person in life needs to stop and understand where you got to,” said David. “Once you understand that, you can move on,” he said.

The recent Merriman Lions Club’s Women’s Day breakfast was all about appealing to the hearts of others. Besides “lucky prizes” being distributed, touching tales of heart transplant recipients were shared with all who attended. By telling the story of people who had a transplant, the Lions Club hoped to inspire others to become donors. Mavis Carelse (58) was one of these who benefited from an organ transplant. She is married and has a daughter and four grandchildren and was born with a “hole in the heart”. Rheumatic fever developed resulting in hospitalisation for a year and a six-week long coma. Her schooling was marred by her first stroke in 1973 and nosebleeds throughout her high school days. She has had a number of strokes and three open heart procedures in 1980, 1984 and 1993 to replace her aortic and mitral valves and another in 2006 to effect valve repairs. After this procedure failed she was scheduled for a transplant which was performed

in 2008. Apart from the strain of waiting for a donor Mavis had meanwhile contracted tuberculosis and had to have four to six litres of blood transfused every fortnight during that period. Her appeal for the other guests to become organ donors was echoed by Clive Fox, Merriman Lions Club president who highlighted the fact that one registered organ donor in good health can save seven lives. Although unable to work or drive, Mavis is very active and speaks at ladies’ meetings, supports the Organ Donor Foundation and the Heart Foundation and does everything to encourage others to donate and save lives. In answer to the question as to whether she felt any different as a result of a new heart she said that she previously disliked chocolate and loved birdsong. Now it’s the other way round as she now loves chocolates and hates hearing the birds sing. Her amazing faith and positive attitude earned her the admiration of the more than 60 guests who together with Mavis and her husband Brian enjoyed a hearty breakfast.

‘Bush settlements are scandalous’

The ACVV Koeberg is looking to make Skandaalkamp a little more homely for people struggling to survive there. Skandaalkamp is one of four “bush” settlements on the dumpsite just outside of Table View and houses 260 families. According to the ACVV’s Nikki Pretorius, the people living there have one portable toilet and one tap for every six families. There is also no electricity available to residents, who rely on fire to cook. Structures are built from whatever materials they can scavenge off the dumpsite. There are no roads, no jobs nearby, no public transport. “They are on the doorstep of one of our major cities, but they may as well be in the middle of Ethiopia because being South African does not mean they share in the democratic rights their citizenship promises. Their living conditions are desperate on a normal, sunshine day! “With all the rain we have had in Cape Town in the last few days, it has become downright dangerous to be a resident here. The non-profit organisation (NPO) ACVV Koeberg works within these communities on a regular basis by offering community upliftment, community development and sport and recreation facilities for the children. With the help of sponsors and donors, they have helped by supplying school stationery to the kids, winter jackets and much-needed shoes for the children, by supplying blankets, by planting vegetable gardens and teaching the residents how to care for those gardens. They have helped cover roofs and build a new shack for a grandmother who lived in an old, broken, plastic swimming pool cover. “You can help us lift these people out of desperate conditions by donating unused items or with financial assistance. We also gladly co-ordinate corporate aid projects by identifying projects for corporate donors to get involved with,” Pretorius says. Du Noon roadworks notice The City of Cape Town warns of traffic diversion in Du Noon due to roadworks in Dumani and Potsdam roads up until Friday 23 August. This is being done to allow for the completion of the MyCiTi Du Noon station and to pave the way for MyCiTi services to the area. This will affect motorists wishing to visit Racing Park in Killarney. During this period, motorists should be aware of the following changes: the Dumani Road access to Racing Park will be restricted to a single lane to be used exclusively for entering the area; and motorists wishing to

exit Racing Park into Potsdam Road will be required to use the Second Gate exit. Signs will be posted around the affected area to help guide motorists. When this route is launched later, the MyCiTi service along Potsdam Road will provide a much-needed public transport link from the Du Noon area to other parts of the city, including Century City, Table View, Atlantis, Melkbosstrand, as well as the city centre and Atlantic Seaboard. The city apologises for any inconvenience caused by these roadworks and thanks motorists for their patience during construction.

In the front are Amorette van Greunen (social worker), Ellen Pakkies (guest speaker), Linda van Zyl (regional consultant) and in the back are Lanie Snydert (social worker), Candice Plaatjies (social auxiliary worker), Alinda van Zyl, Anne Tesner, Wendy Bekker, Charmaine Williams (community coordinator), Fay van Wyk and Charmaine Attia.

Women’s Day guest tells her harrowing abuse story A woman is a rock, a mother, a wife and a teacher. Throughout history, there have been a number of remarkable women, one of these is Ellen Pakkies. On 7 August, ACVV Peninsula together with Brooklyn’s Women’s Forum had the pleasure of hosting a women’s day with Pakkies as guest speaker. The event was held in Ysterplaat, and 100 women from Maitland, Garden Village, Brooklyn, Rugby and Ysterplaat were invited to attend. Pakkies shared her story of hardship with these women, and was a true inspiration to all who attended. She grew up in the Western Cape, where she was victim of a number of social issues that plague our communities. After being molested at the age of four, being raped and kidnapped in her teenage years and living on the streets most of her early adulthood, Pak-

kies finally reached her breaking point when her son, Adam, became aggressively addicted to tik. After numerous forms of abuse at the hand of her addict son, Ellen finally snapped. On 12 September 2007, Ellen strangled her son to death. Pakkies shares her story with women all over the country. She encourages old and young to stand up against physical, sexual and mental abuse and to be aware of drug abuse. Her story is heartbreaking, and a true reflection of what’s going on in our poverty stricken communities. ACVV Peninsula together with Brooklyn’s Women’s Forum want to thank all their donors for making this day a success. A wise man once said: “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.”

Neighbourhood Watch on their toes A man was arrested after Table View Neighbourhood Watch (TVNW) and Star Alarms responded to an activated alarm. TVNW spokesperson, Gemma Redelinghuys, elaborates: “One of our members was on patrol at 04:00 on Friday and received a message from his street committee that an alarm was going off in Slough Road. Upon turning into Swanley Road, two men were spotted hiding behind a parked vehicle.” The men fled and the member called for backup. After searching the area with Star Alarms, they discovered one of the men hiding behind a dustbin. “Messages regarding alarms in houses as well as photographs of various houses were discovered on his cellphone,” continues Redelinghuys. The suspect was immediately arrested by the police. V In a separate incident, a call to the Neighbourhood Watch on Wednesday regarding a “wall jumper” in Circle Road, saw Neighbourhood Watch members along with Complex Patrol capture a suspect with the stolen gas bottle in hand. He was arrested.

Hy’s byvoorbeeld steeds ’n stoere Cheetah-ondersteuner.

K

assie Kasselman is werklik ’n onindrukwekkende man.

“As ek my lewe kon oorhê, sou ek ’n joernalis gebly het. Dis my passie. Ek sou dalk ook vroeër begin skryf het.” Deesdae skryf Rudie basies voltyds – sy opvolg op Slagyster is volgende jaar op die rakke met die vaalseun Kasselman weer in die hoofrol. Die derde boek is ook byna klaar. Hy skilder baie ernstig en doen vryskutwerk in die joernalistiek, onder meer vir TygerBurger. Geregtigheid ontbreek in die regstelsel Advokaat Barbie is uit op parool. Nog net so blond, nog net so plastiek as tydens haar verhoor sowat drie jaar gelede.

Once you’re on the street... People living on the brink of desolation, many are chronically ill, disabled or suffering addictions. Rejected by society they sleep in doorways, under bridges, on sidewalks, victims of crime, the weather and all those elements which we hide from in our homes. There is no safety net for the poor and marginalised in South Africa. If you lose your job, if you cannot work you will fall into this no-man’s land. Once you are there it is like being trapped in a hole with slippery sides. When you live on the street you are humbled and scorned by people who don’t want to know who you are. You cannot keep clean enough to groom yourself for job hunting, you fall into hopelessness and lack motivation. You live in hope until you slide into despair. The weather and the fact that there are no ablution facilities contribute to this downward spiral. Brooklyn needs a shelter for the homeless, where there is accommodation during the inclement weather. It could serve the need for a centre where skills could be taught and where the homeless would have a sense of ownership and belonging. Given the responsibility of the running of such a place would lend credibility to those who want the opportunity re-enter mainstream society. The people from this group need a voice – people from the homeless to represent them and members of the public who will stand with them. One thing that stands between life indoors and a life outdoors is employment. All groups should share in this as Brooklyn is a cosmopolitan society. Being homeless does not only affect a select group. The Christian churches hand out food on certain days of the week, there are gap days

where other groups could get involved, such as the Muslim community. They are experienced in dealing with crisis management and have skills training to offer. The community of Brooklyn needs to stand together. In unity we will have the strength to overcome the “Cinderella image” with which we are perceived. LINDA REEVES Brooklyn

Frustrations of a shopper on Monday Do not attempt to shop on Mondays at the big chain stores. The motion of the employees is a heavy shuffle from side to side with as little effort to move forward. Do not expect any fast deliveries, do not even try and converse as weekend discussions amongst employees is a priority that will override your urgent request to purchase something. It is Monday and racks have to be filled, therefore customers need not reach out for stock, packers are usually busy in groups of three or more to operate verbally what needs to be done. Bread, meat and fish stations are available after a few moments of your time. They were nowhere to be seen, another station’s employee came forward by shouting to the one responsible. She then slugged past me to off-load a few items and mumbled in my direction, timeless in effort and service. When you approach the cashiers you may become nearly invisible. No acknowledgement of your presence, only the monosyllable of a card is accepted. And bag. A big drawback is when your item is not scanned properly. There goes the next few minutes of your time, because this will involve a higher hand of the managerial kind. More searching on the front for such a person will occur. Stay clear of the money

market section. There will be a line with at the most one or two people to assist you. Worst scenario, she is going on a tea break. You have now progressed from frustration to vexation in not so slow terms. ES LILLY Email

It seems life is hard for everyone now It saddens me to see South Africa moving back to the “Stone Age” as it were. I look around and see people struggling daily. I read the articles, watch the news and wonder what is becoming of our society. Life truly seems to be a vicious circle. Just take a look as our pensioners are broke on pay day; more and more criminals act out of desperation to give their families the basics; people now steal food and no longer luxury items; people of aboveaverage status are even compromising. Life is hard enough as it is and daily we are reminded to switch off appliances and save water. Petrol is another issue. It is good for business and the environment, but at what price to us? What about those who do not have a choice because of awkward hours or location? It makes me wonder why we slave away endlessly at our workplace if there is no benefit other than on retirement. It seems even the basics are out of reach. This is the sad reality – we all know it. It is one big chain reaction of unemployment, alternative means of survival, crime, businesses suffering, fewer homes and vehicles being bought, more debt to pay off, suicide, drugs and alcohol abuse, and broken families. When do we breathe? Where is our light at the end of the tunnel? SAMANTHA KERCHHOFF Email

Touching transplant tale promotes organ donation

Vote for our brave rescue crews

ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

As the speed boat flitted across the violent waves, seven heroes stared fixedly at the horizon. Milnerton’s Fabian Higgins from Metro Emergency Medical Services and two of his colleagues were preparing to take the plunge. Icy water slammed against the boat as it rounds the Sentinel at Hout Bay. Off in the distance, the rescue divers saw other National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) boats circling the capsized Miroshga. Somewhere trapped inside the sightseeing Miroshga three people were desperately contemplating the dangerous dark ocean. It is the afternoon of 13 October 2012. The Miroshga rescue and the resultant fatalities of that day would be repeatedly scrutinised for the foreseeable future. But less focus would fall on the bravery of the people who pulled off this pioneering and daring rescue. Now the seven-man team is one of the finalists for the Centrum Guardian of the Year Award. This competition gives the public the chance to vote for the most deserving emergency and rescue services employees. The rescue team that saved three women from the ill-fated Miroshga is this province’s only representatives. Higgins has experienced his fair share of hair-raising moments in his 20-year career, but this day rises above all of the others. “None of us knew what to expect...” he tells TygerBurger. Higgins and his colleagues are based at the rescue unit in Pinelands and got the call at 14:30. They were told that a boat had capsized near the Boss 400 shipwreck near Sandy Bay and that there might still be people trapped

Last year the sea rescue team of NSRI and Metro Emergency Medical Services saved three people from the capsized sightseeing boat Miroshga. Now the rescuers depend on the public to help them be worthy winners of the Centrum Guardian of the Year Award. PHOTO: NSRI on the hull and seemed to be communicating with those trapped inside.” The speed boat stopped a few metres from the Miroshga and Higgins jumped into the water. “The sea was very rough and tossed the boat around quite heavily. I had no idea what the boat looked like upright and it was difficult to figure out what exactly was going on under the water. I had to look for some kind of entrance to the cabin while the boat was rocking violently,” he continues, before adding that it was very dark once he entered the cabin. All he knew was that the survivors were stuck somewhere in the hull on the starboard side. He searched around in the tu-

in the hull. It took the team 25 minutes to just get to Hout Bay. When the three divers arrived at the harbour a man and his wife offered to take them to the scene in a speed boat. Two firemen also came along in case their help was needed. “There was a horrendous swell in the water and we were soaking wet by the time we got to the capsized boat,” he continues. “At that stage we were aware that only one person had died of the 41 people who were on board. “One person was missing, however, and three were trapped somewhere in the hull. Two or three NSRI volunteers were sitting

multuous environment among the floating ropes, bags and cameras. “It was like a whirlwind has gone through the cabin! It was quite hectic… I had no idea whether the boat might sink at any moment with me in it.” Finally he found a small entrance that resembled a cupboard and opened it. For the briefest of moments the inside of the hull was illuminated and Higgins saw legs. Against all odds the survivors found a little air pocket. He couldn’t swim into the hull due to the size of his diving gear equipment, so he grabbed one of the legs, blew bubbles out of a breathing apparatus and finally made the survivors know he was under the water trying to save them. The first survivor he dragged back from the watery grave grabbed on to him for dear life. He went down again, but his air was almost used up so he had to come to the surface and give one of his colleagues a chance to be someone’s hero. The simple fact that he played a part in this miraculous rescue is all the vindication he needs. If, however, they win the competition then the R50 000 will be used to buy rescue equipment for the province. Every single one of our local heroes deserves all the recognition that comes his way, but in the meantime they will settle for a vote. The team consists of Higgins, Eben Lourens, Elvin Stoffels, Capt PJ van der Merwe, Gert Voigt, Merwin Nel and Douglas Jones. Go to www.tygerburger.co.za for an audio interview with Higgins as well a gallery of photos. Autism org gives thanks August has been a very busy month for Autism Western Cape (AWC). Important events and preparations for the organisation’s AGM in September are currently taking place. The month started with a bang when the organisation took delivery of its first official vehicle, a Toyota Avanza funded by the National Lottery. The AWC team are thrilled to finally have a vehicle to visit schools, clinics and clients across the Western Cape. The next major event was a women’s networking breakfast hosted by the organisation on 8 August in honour of Women’s Day. The event was an opportunity for Autism Western Cape to thank its donors and partner organisations which support and assist them. During the event, the new director, Janine Chester, was formally introduced to the donors, organisations and other invited guests by chairperson of the board Dr Kirsten Donald. Chester thanked the donors and the organisations who were their guests for their continued support to AWC. She explained that as Autism Western Cape is a non-profit organisation, the donations made by private donors are vital to ensure that the organisation can continue to provide support and assistance to families with children on the autism spectrum. She went on to say that in the Western Cape, there are on average, at least 10 new diagnoses a week at Red Cross, Tygerberg and Lentegeur combined, yet very few people in Cape Town know what autism is or the many challenges faced by these families. Chester invited guests to attend the organisation’s AGM in September and stressed the need for volunteers to join the organisation’s board. V For information about Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or the services offered by Autism Western Cape contact 021 685 9581.

Power saving hit hospitals The health sector alone spent at least R8 billion on electricity during the 2012/2013 financial year. With this in mind, The Life Hospital Group is leading the way by investing in renewable and sustainable resources to supply heated water to save electricity expenses. This hospital group requested New Southern Energy, a sustainable energy provider, to evaluate 15 of its hospitals. West Coast Hospital was the first to receive a sustainable energy make-over. With the aim to improve West Coast hospital’s hot water efficiency, New Southern Energy identified that the hospital was not only wasting heating on water, but wasting water as well. With an in-depth assessment complete, the company set about installing energy efficient heat pumps into the West Coast hospital. Heat pumps were installed onto the boiler systems and an autoclave heat recovery system in order to save the water wastage of the hospital. Over and above this, a geyser matrix system was installed to improve the overall system performance and efficiency of heating the large amounts of water. In refining the heat recovery system a large overflow storage tank was installed to capture waste water, which is used for irrigation and toilet flushing, etc. The West Coast Life Hospital previously consumed an average of 36.59 kW per hour using their boiler system and currently consumes an average of 5.35 kW per hour resulting in an average save of R11 000 per month. This savings increases in line with Eskom inflation. The system pays itself off in 18 to 24 months. Currently, Eskom is giving clients a rebate for installing energy efficient technologies (such as heat pumps) and this further improves the financial attraction of these systems in the hospitals. Since the West Coast hospital, New Southern Energy has assisted in water heating savings in seven of Life Hospital Group’s organisations.

Hoë Rotariër besoek Melkbos-klub

Viv and Pat Deacon, Marie Petersen, Andrew and Teresa Thomson.

Community rise up for SAPS

After the ordeal suffered by an on-duty Parklands police officer last month when an unknown suspect stormed into the police station and tried to take his gun from him, the community and private sector joined hands and organised extra security at the station. Says Chris Visser, chairperson for Community Police Forum (CPF) Sector 2: “I was informed of this incident (with the policeman) five minutes prior to the start of the Sector 2 CPF meeting. I informed attendees at the meeting and suggested we raise funds urgently for safety gates at Parklands Police. Right there and then the community started committing and within two minutes I received a commitment of R9 500. By the end of the meeting R11 000 was raised.” That evening the CPF placed their request on the Neighbourhood Watch’s social media

group and two days later they had a total of R16 350 raised and deposited in the CPF’s bank account. Trellidor also played a part when they gave the CPF a huge discount to supply and install two safety gates. A local security company, Complex Patrol, installed a free alarm system with panic buttons and four CCTV cameras – also free of charge. These will be monitored by Table View Neighbourhood Watch. Last week the Community Intervention Centre sponsored a security gate for the Parklands police station’s back door, which the CPF will install in due course. The police and the CPF will also be installing new monitors at the police station and Neighbourhood Watch Control Room.

Jaco van Rooyen (technical manager of Complex Patrol) and his team installed the alarm and CCTV camera at Parklands Police Station. Next to him is Chris Visser (CPF Sector 2 chairperson) and Lourens Myburgh (opsmanager Complex Patrol).

“Ek is baie trots daarop,” sê hy. “My musiekloopbaan het seker amptelik begin toe ek so 14 was, maar ek sing al van kleins af,” sê Munro.

Can Skylark is every woman Eerste Afrikaanse oratorium LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

Local songstress, Can Skylark, invites fans to celebrate Women’s Month when she presents her show, I’m every Woman. “Can Skylark is all about shows,” Can says of her production team, adding: “We tend to think big.” A big production is exactly what fans can expect of I’m every Woman, at Barny- Can Skylark ard Theatre, Willowbridge on Monday 26 August. “We’re celebrating femininity,” Can says of the show. “I want to honour the strength of women,” she says. While Can will showcase some of her own original music, from the album Pure, she will also pay homage to some of the great female vocalists of our time, such as Tina Turner, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Amy Winehouse and many more. “It’s a huge production,” Can says of I’m every Woman. Can says she prefers creating big productions to just small shows.

Can says fans can expect “just madness on stage, really”. From a big screen with animation, to smoke machines and lighting designs, Can says the show will be a full audio visual experience. Joining Can on stage as her opening act, will be young singer, Kelly Sayer, who Can met through a coordinator of the Barleycorn Music Club. Kelly, a singer/songwriter, who recently won a scholarship to study music at Berkeley University. She plays the guitar, piano and ukulele and is also part of an a capella vocal group, Fusion, which was featured on the TV show, Come Dine with Me. V Tickets for I’m every Woman cost R135, through Computicket and seating is unreserved. Doors open at 18:30 and the show starts at 20:00. For more information, email management@cansky lark.com. V Read more about Can Skylark on her Facebook page. V Visit www.tygerburger.o.za to watch a video of Can Skylark’s album launch.

V Kaartjies is by Computicket beskikbaar. Exciting night cycle race This form of racing is a massive spectator sport as the athletes are in contact with the crowds every few minutes and as the circuit is a street course, the cornering is fast and furious with huge appeal to all ages of cyclists. Average heart rate for an event like this is anywhere between 175-205bpm and a specialised conditioning programme is required to prepare the cyclists. Activities will commence around 17:30 on Plein Street in historic Stellenbosch. This weekend sees another race at the Polkadraai Farm Stall on the M12 between Kuils River and Stellenbosch, commencing at 12:00 for youngsters under the age of 16, 13:00 for veterans, and 14:00 for the professionals.

Lights by Linea Pro Crit Night Series is an exciting evening cycle race around some of the main streets of Stellenbosch on Saturday. This event subscribes to the worldwide trend of “criterium” formats, where riders, usually the best amateurs and professionals around, race around streets, on a completely closed route, protected by safety officers and traffic officials. Wayne Roberts, on behalf of the event, himself an everyday veteran cyclist, considers this style of event as lacking exposure, since people have grown accustomed to longer distances, and mountain biking, especially with the decline of road safety for riders and the loss of traditional stage races.

A mudbath but it’s still a good try

Visit our website:

The IFBB Western Province Provincial Bodybuilding Championships are sure to attract the very best bodies in the province this Saturday to battle it out for a spot in the provincial team. Western Province will announce its team on Saturday night for the South African National Championships to be held in Port Elizabeth from 5 to 7 September. Bodybuilding has seen tremendous growth in the last year in the province and the numbers are backing this up. In comparison with previous years, the number of athletes entering shows has more than doubled. Bellville resident and chairperson of IFBB Western Province, Kevin Schwartz, has made a massive impact in growing the sport and attracting new sponsors to this non profit organisation. “Bodybuilding is my passion in life, and everything I and my committee members do is for the athletes. We have moved to a bigger and better venue, upgrading our lights for the stage and more.” The Show will be held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Athletes weigh in from 08:00 to 10:00, pre-judging begins at 11:00 and the main show at 18:00. Pre-judging spectators pay R60 and for the main show R100. Athletes affiliation and division entry is R100 respectively. Go to www.ifbbwp.co.za for more.
