A

member of the so-called balaclava gang died on his way to hospital after one of the gang’s previous victims, a Melkbosstrand police officer, shot him in the arm and in the left side of his torso on Tuesday night last week. Three other robbers managed to escape into the bushy terrain next to Narcissus Street, despite heavy police, K9-unit, chopper and neighbourhood watch presence. “This was once again the same modus operandi as the other house robberies in the area,” said Melkbosstrand police commander Captain Ronita van der Toorn: TygerBurger has reported on the balaclava gang’s activities in recent articles titled “Wave of robberies hits Melkbos” and “Gang

strikes again”. “Last week Tuesday at about 21:00 four balaclava-clad males armed with a revolver, a panga and gloves entered a house in Narcissus Street when a resident briefly stepped outside. The entire family (husband, wife and two young children) were held up,” says Van der Toorn. One of the robbers demanded the police officer open his safe and that is when the man apparently reached for his gun and shot the suspect twice.

Within his rights The exact circumstances behind the attack are still being investigated, says van der Toorn, but preliminary investigation indicates the officer acted within his rights. The other three suspects escaped with a laptop, wallet, iPhone and cellphone.

There were no other injuries, but the family are very traumatised. Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch spokesperson Nicky Versfeld said they assisted from the time the complaint was reported shortly before 21:00, until 02:00. “Some of our members had just left a meeting at the station when the complaint came in – we were therefore able to assist at the station briefly with answering calls and conveying information both to the police and to our watch response team members before departing for various duties and to observation points including extra patrols in the area and along the R27,” said Versfeld. “One call in particular that I answered was from security at the reserve alerting us to the fact that suspects were seen there, which gave an immediate indication of where to start searching.

Concern “At times like this the station becomes extremely busy which is why we have called for, and encourage volunteers to assist with answering the telephone at the station.” Melkbosstrand Community Police Forum’s John Taylor says he was “concerned”. “It is concerning when someone uses a gun for protection and ends up killing someone. The risk of them getting injured or even ending up in jail becomes so much bigger when it happens. Obviously in this specific case, the person who fired the shot is trained, but one must be very, very careful when firing shots at an intruder. It is best to do what robbers want in these situations.” Taylor urged the public to remain “vigilant”. “These guys are part of a bigger syndicate and it is far from over,” he warns.

Die Wes-Kaapse department van gesondheid hoop dat meer inligting oor tuberkulose (TB) aan die gemeenskap sal help om hierdie gevreesde en dodelike siekte stelselmatig uit te roei. Alhoewel die Wes-Kaap volgens die Wêreldgesondheidsorganisasie (WGO) die beste genesingskoers vir TB in die land het, is Suid-Afrika steeds wêreldwyd die land met die derde meeste TB-infeksies. In 2013 is 45 000 diagnoses gemaak. Theuns Botha, die Wes-Kaapse minister van gesondheid, sit nou sy voet neer. “Ons moet ’n ander benadering vind om TB te voorkom en te behandel. Ek oorweeg dit om TB-sifting in die skoolgesondheidstelsel voor te stel,” sê hy. Terwyl internasionale akademici verlede week by die vierde jaarlikse TB-kongres in Durban bymekaar gekom het om oor dié siekte se epidemiese omvang te praat, het Botha gesê ’n reuse-poging is nodig om individue en gemeenskappe se ingesteldheid teenoor die siekte te verander en wanopvattings aan te spreek. Dié departement gaan eersdaags met ’n nuwe bewusmakingsveldtog begin in die hoop om die vroeë opsporing en behandeling van veral middelbestande-TB (DR-TB) aan te moedig. Die veldtog sal uit radio-advertensies en kontak met die publiek by taxi-staanplekke en treinstasies bestaan. Al meer pasiënte, wat voorheen nie TB gehad het nie, word daagliks met DR-TB gediagnoseer. Volgens prof. Simon Schaaf, kenner en gerekende navorser van DR-TB by die Tygerberg-kampus van die Universiteit Stellenbosch, is dit eers onlangs bewys dat DR-TB aansteeklik is. Maar, sê hy, kinders veral reageer goed op behandeling, mits hulle vroegtydig gediagnoseer word. En alhoewel ’n middel teen weerstandige TB volgens berigte binnekort in Suid-Afrika beskikbaar gaan wees, berig Elsabé Brits in Die Burger dat dit nog ten minste twee jaar se studie sal neem om die regte kombinasies van medikasie te kry om DR-TB te behandel. Sy berig voorts dat Suid-Afrika hoop om ook die generiese weergawe van ’n ander middel te bekom en te laat goedkeur, maar hierdie medikasie kan meer as R3 000 per maand per pasiënt kos. TB word versprei in swak geventileerde, beperkte omgewings. Weens die druk op hospitaalbeddens, kan pasiënte nie meer soos in die verlede vir ses maande lank gehospitaliseer word nie. Daarom vestig Botha en sy departement hul inligtingsveldtog op die gemeenskap. Sedert 2011 is DR-TB-behandeling gedesentraliseer, omdat pasiënte tuis dikwels beter ondersteuning kan kry. Volgens Botha is hierdie gedesentraliseerde sorg, wat in meeste gevalle deur klinieke in plaas van deur hospitalisasie verskaf word, baie suksesvol. “Pasiënte kon behandeling ontvang in die gemeenskap waarin hulle bly, dus word die gesinseenheid gehandhaaf,” sê hy. Dit het ook tot gevolg gehad dat die aantal dae vandat ’n pasiënt gediagnoseer is tot hy of sy medikasie kan begin ontvang, gedaal het van 72 na ongeveer 17 dae gemiddeld. Botha sê die bewusmakingsveldtog het ten doel om die stigma rondom die siekte aan te spreek en om vroeë opsporing en behandeling van DR-TB aan te moedig.

Locals help to stop hunger Willowbridge Mall teamed up with Stop Hunger Now on Saturday to package 15 000 nourishing meals for distribution to preschools in and around Cape Town. The meals have been funded with the support of the Hyprop Foundation of Hyprop Properties, the owner of the Mall. The event was part of Stop Hunger Now’s Meals in Memory campaign to honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by mobilising volunteers to get involved in helping improve the lives of the less fortunate.

The Meals in Memory campaign will see more than 250 000 meals packaged in the Western Cape from April to July this year. This will be enough food to feed 3 000 children at 66 under-resourced preschools for a period of six months. The highly nutritious meals contain rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).

rail care facilities are in the firing line due to impending enforcement of the ambitious Older Persons Act of

2006. Many smaller and private frail care facilities will have to spend millions of Rands to get “up to standard” or risk being closed down. Closure would inevitably leave thousands of old people in the province without a home. “We have 10 inhabitants over the age of 60 living with us,” says Eric Miles Cheshire Home for the Disabled manager, Alet Bosman. “Two of them have been living here since 1976. It is their home. Now we are beginning to think we might have to send them away because of this Act, which is perhaps a little over ambitious for a country such as ours.” Some of these regulations are theoretically sound, but according to Bosman, are impractical.

Compulsory training Each of the caregivers must now complete an accredited training programme at the Health and Welfare Sector Educational Training Authority (HWSETA). It will take a minimum of six months to complete a course, during which the carer may not work at an old age home. Most carers, according to Bosman, have never done a course at HWSETA, yet they have been treating older people for decades. Another regulation which draws Bosman’s ire is that each older person needs a comprehensive and personalised care record, which takes an huge amount of time to keep updated.

“One can also now never restrain an older person without a doctor’s note. Restraining an older person who is in an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s Disease is sometimes the only way to temporarily control the person. Now we need a doctor’s note. Why?” asks Bosman. She and numerous anonymous owners of facilities in Milnerton and Table View have many questions such as these. “This law has been around since 2006. Why is it such a priority for the Department to enforce it almost eight years after it first saw the light?” Western Cape social development MEC Albert Fritz said although the Act was finalized in 2006, it was only promulgated for implementation on 1 April 2010 in the Government Gazette. Provinces then had to await the National Department of Social Development providing the Delegations of Powers before provincial departments could begin implementing the Act. He said the provincial department was now required to enforce the legislation. Fitz adds that if an Old Age Home does not adhere to regulations and is forced to close, then inhabitants need to be placed in alternative accommodation. “This process will be done in consultation with me or my delegated authority,” he said. Bosman and her peers at other Homes insist there has been no public participation process before the Act was promulgated, but Fritz insists this is not the case. “Public hearings took place whilst the Act was in draft format. This was done by the Western Cape Standing Committee on Social Welfare Services as well as National Parliament. Also the draft Act was gazetted for public comment and input, before the normal process followed which applied to all legislation before being promulgated.” Fritz also apparently ran a media cam-

paign regarding registration in 2012. But Bosman says: “Many families of the elderly people willingly put their parent or parents into a Home, knowing exactly what to expect. They are happy with the care provided there. Were these families’ opinions ever considered?”

Homes audited Fritz assures her the Department “responds and considers” opinions when provided in writing. He also asserts that the law will be applied “across the board”, but the Department will provide funding for its subsidised Old Age Homes in order to comply with norms and standards. Within a few weeks health specialist, local authorities and the department’s social workers will be auditing and assessing hundreds of homes in the city. Tygerburger spoke to a few old age home managers along the western seaboard and quite a few of them were aggrieved and despondent. Ulrike Thaele from Table View’s K-Sera Frail Care Home, says their audit is in November, so they will close their doors in October. “For 23 years nobody cared about us. We had to work with nothing. Now, when we have no energy left we are being pushed further under water. We served the community and helped so many older people, of whom 99% suffer from either Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Now we have to stop because of this Act. What makes a good carer? A certificate? No, quality of service! Our challenges are enormous. We are currently a home for 26 old people, some of them living here for just R4 500 – R5 000 a month. Now they will have to move to a Home where they will have to pay about R13 000 a month.” She said smaller Homes were entirely excluded by the Act.

Mrs Cape Town ties up fashion with charity event Mrs Cape Town 2013 and fashion and image stylist Chantal Witthuhn will be hosting the “Save a Tie, Save a Child” fashion show fundraising event in Brackenfell on 27 and 28 June. The concept of recycling and transforming old and unused ties originated over four years ago when Chantal visited friends in the UK and encountered a designer making a waistcoat out of old ties. As an avid recycler Chantal used the Mrs Cape Town platform to demonstrate her passion as a fashion stylist to promote and establish the event and cause. One of the beneficiaries, the Imfundo Project, supports pre-school and aftercare facilities in disadvantaged areas. The event’s objective is to establish the RoleModels Foundation within the Western Cape and to maintain the Imfundo project where it is already functional, bringing support to impoverished communities. A request for old and unused ties was sent

out and over 4 000 ties have been collected from various communities and individuals in support of the project, with some heart warming stories that have come out of the cause. Chantal contacted a few fashion designers, sharing her concept and dream, and three very willing and talented fashion designers accepted and joined Chantal in her quest. The three designers have agreed to “sponsor” the designs, funding and creating it at their own cost. Each designer will be designing 12-15 outfits each, which will eventually be auctioned. Fashion Designers Hein Smit and Marshall Enyioma are both based in the Table View area and Saskia Wicomb works in Stellenbosch. The “Save the Tie, Save a Child” event will be hosted at the All Star Theatre at Cape Gate Lifestyle Centre and starts at 18:30. The dresscode is “cocktail”. Book now at Computicket.

Soccer fever rules RAYNO LOURENS The Soccer World Cup 2014 has finally arrived. How magnificent it was when South Africa hosted it in 2010. The first goal scored by Siphiwe Tshabalala followed by the famous dancing from Bafana Bafana really warmed our hearts. It made us believe. This was a start of a fantastic month of spectacular soccer. Vuvuzelas came out in full swing everywhere and a cacophony sounded all round. The big vuvuzela signalled every time a goal was scored. Neighbours competed to blow the loudest. We even called each other out by blowing them during halftime to talk about the game. We discussed goals scored, corners wasted and fouls acted out to cause the referee to award unnecessary penalties. Every car had at least one flag or mirror sock attached to it displaying the South African flag and/or other country’s. When stopping at the robots we all just smiled at each other. Most people adopted another country after Bafana Bafana failed to go through to the next round. We as Capetonians travelled by train just to walk the Fanwalk. Even though some didn’t have tickets to watch the match, we were there. And we will never forget.

Photos were taken, smiles were shared, and memories were made. Coffee was brewed. Burgers were sold. Big screens shone, with thousands of eyes fixed on them. People dressed in the official shirt of the country they supported that evening. It was winter. It was cold. But we had so much fun. Cape Town was probably the safest place ever. Transport was probably the best. Late at night it was safe to come home by train. When we walked in the mall in our Bafana shirts, or anywhere, we embraced different people and talked to each other. I miss the world cup. We came together as a nation, together with the world. We were one. Sport can bind a nation together. As Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.” Let’s all enjoy the world cup and may the best team win.

A makeshift trolley was, for a while, known as Tanzanite Boulevard last week Tuesday. The road sign was supposedly to be sold for scrapmetal by two suspects for about R1.80 per kilogram. That would equate to about R36. The City of Cape Town’s Metals Theft Unit, also known as the “Copperheads”, arrested the two trolley pushers near Montague Gardens after they initially responded to an unrelated complaint. “Last week Tuesday the Copperheads received a tip-off about cable theft in Milnerton,” said Metals Theft Unit assistant chief Neil Arendse. “Earlier that evening a vehicle had collided with a traffic signal pole and it was reported that suspects were stealing the cabling from inside the pole. However, when they arrived at the scene, the cables were intact and there was no one around. They searched the area and noticed two men (one of whom was pushing a makeshift trolley) acting suspiciously on the corner of Plattekloof and Koeberg Road. On inspection, officers found the road sign for Tanzanite Boulevard in their possession.”

The two suspects were arrested for possession of stolen property and taken to the Milnerton police station. A scrapmetal dealer, who has been in the industry for more than a decade, says road signs are made of mild steel. Parow Valley’s Michael Erasmus from MegaMetals said if a sign is thinner than 3 mm then it is sub grade, and for this you get approximately R1.80 per kilo. “Having been in this industry for a while I have dealt with many people who steal road signs and try to sell them to us. They are generally not trying to sell these for bread or milk, but rather for drugs. So for R36 they can probably buy about two tik ‘lollies’.” Erasmus says it is illegal to buy metal such as road signs, and they regularly assist Parow police in busting these kind of criminals. “These guys don’t normally come to businesses such as ours, but rather to ‘bucket shops’, who then sell bulk loads to us. We will not, however, buy metal that was clearly stolen. Some bucket shops nonetheless pay criminals for bringing them stolen metals. Pro-active work by Table View police led to the arrest of four housebreaking suspects on Thursday morning. “For about two-and-a-half months we analysed what type of crime occurs in which streets,” said Table View station commander Col Dirk Vosloo. “St Anne’s Street in Sunningdale was one of those that we decided to keep an eye on. The sector 2 patrollers were tasked to increase their patrols in that area.” On Thursday morning the police noticed a Nissan Almera parked in a driveway on this street. There was a suspicious looking man inside the vehicle. Another man jumped into the vehicle and the two tried to leave the scene when they spotted the police.

The police also discovered that a security gate was forced open. “Upon further investigation it was discovered that the house was being broken into,” said Vosloo. The two in the car were arrested and after a brief pursuit which ended in the toilets of the nearby West Coast Village, two more suspects were arrested. All were apprehended on charges of housebreaking and are due to appear in court. Stolen items were recovered. Vosloo said the same vehicle could have been involved in a housebreaking incident in Porcupine Street earlier during the week. “They are going to court on Tuesday next week and we plan to ask for an additional seven days to investigate this possibility,” he said.

See Alice at the shopping mall This winter, children who visit Canal Walk Shopping Centre will be experiencing the finest theatre in the country, and playing their part in providing 250 000 meals to Stop Hunger Now. Lewis Carroll’s much loved classic, Alice in Wonderland, will be brought to life by the award winning duo of Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer. The show will run from Saturday 28 June to Sunday 20 July in a specially

constructed theatre in the centre court. The shows will be performed from Tuesday to Sunday at 11:00, 12:30 and 14:00. Tickets will cost R70 and will be sold through Computicket. Canal Walk will donate R5 from each ticket sold, as well as the proceeds of programme sales to Stop Hunger Now. The centre will also play host to “Meals in Memory” packing events over two weekends prior to Mandela Day on July 18.

African penguin chicks at SANCCOB need a nursery.

Chicks need own nursery Penguin chicks cared for by the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds’ (SANCCOB) are in desperate need of a nursery. Every year SANCCOB admits between 800 and 900 abandoned African penguin chicks and eggs for rehabilitation before releasing them back into the wild. The organisation is appealing to the public to help raise funds to build a nursery which will house the larger penguin chicks. The addition of a nursery will add much needed capacity to the current Chick Rearing Unit in Table View which is over-flowing with hungry young birds. By collaborating with SANParks and CapeNature, chicks and eggs are brought into SANCCOB’s care throughout the year. These penguin chicks and eggs are admitted when their parents either abandon them when undergoing their annual moult or

when they have fallen ill or become weak. Chicks are also removed as a precautionary measure from areas where they are at risk from speeding motor vehicles or pets. The extra capacity will enable SANCCOB to separate the larger penguin chicks from the very young babies in order to better care for them and prepare them for release back into the wild. With less than 2% of the original population remaining, the hand-rearing of ill and abandoned chicks is seen as a crucial conservation intervention to help bolster the wild population. SANCCOB, a non-profit organisation, has been at the forefront of saving the endangered African penguin and other seabird species since 1968. Duo walk and roll for disabled Zizipho Ndlwana and Clifford Martin have taken on the challenge to walk and roll 42.2km from Camps bay to Bloubergstrand to raise funds for the Gabriella Centre and Guts2Glory athletes. Zizipho was in a car accident in 2010 that resulted in an amputation 18cm below his left knee. Clifford was in an accident in 1995 and broke his back, an injury which left him paraplegic. Zizipho will be pushing Clifford the 42.2 km on 29 June. What makes this challenge even more difficult is that Zizipho will be using his own “everyday leg” and not a fancy light weight leg, and Clifford will be using his “everyday wheelchair”.

All monies raised from this effort will go to Guts2Glory, who in turn will hand a portion of the monies raised to the Gabriella Centre in Somerset West. Guts2Glory is a non-profit organization with the main aim of raising funds for disabled and underprivileged athletes and cyclists in order to help them to realize their dreams of representing their country at the Paralympics. There are several ways the community and companies can get involved, such as making a pledge per kilometer covered, a direct donation, or purchasing advertising space on their shirts or Zizipho’s leg. high speed chase last week Friday involving a variety of law enforcement authorities ended up in Sparrow Crescent, Table View, when the two suspects apparently ran out of petrol. The passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Bellville, was arrested and the driver managed to flee on foot. Circumstances around the pursuit are still unclear, but it is rumoured that diving gear, a plastic firearm and a crowbar were apparently recovered from the vehicle. “While patrolling Duynefontein at approximately 03:20, one of our members noted a silver Corsa bakkie with two occupants

turning out from one of the crescents into Napoleon Avenue in the direction of the R27,”said Melkbosstrand Neighbourhood Watch (MNW) spokesperson, Nicky Versfeld. “It was not reported to be suspicious as it was considered to be a local vehicle leaving the area.”

Circling the area The patroller continued to monitor the area and within a space of 10 minutes spotted the same vehicle on two occasions in different areas of Duynefontein. At this point the patroller made radio contact with the police who immediately dispatched a vehicle to establish why the bakkie was circling in the area.” The security company Avenue Response

also joined the search. The police spotted the vehicle first and pulled it over. The MNW member also arrived on the scene and saw that a trailer was now connected to the bakkie. “The driver said he had collected the trailer from a friend’s house and that he had to first drive around the area to try and find the house,” said Versfeld. “He was unable to confirm the physical address of where his friend lived and things started looking suspicious when some questions could not be answered. The vehicle also had no front registration plates and no licence disk which added to the suspicion.” The police continued their line of questioning.

Soon after the driver jumped into the vehicle again and sped off, with the police in hot pursuit.

High speed chase Table View police and Table View Neighbourhood Watch joined their Melkbosstrand colleagues during the chase which lasted over an hour through the streets of Parklands, Dunoon, Killarney Gardens and Table View. According to Melkbosstrand police commander, Capt Ronita van der Toorn, the vehicle and the trailer were apparently stolen. The vehicle apparently lost it’s trailer and came to a skidding standstill, something van der Toorn attributes to the vehicle running out of fuel.

Law Enforcement officer Renald Webster, who has been assigned to patrol Montague Gardens from 08:00 to 17:00, doesn’t waste any time getting on with the job. He made his first arrest just one day after his appointment last week Wednesday when he apprehended a vagrant for being in possession of dagga. Webster was appointed a week after Montague Gardens Business Forum (MGBF) met

with community safety MEC Dan Plato at the Milnerton police station, as reported in last week’s TygerBurger (“Businesses blame vagrancy for crime”). Business owners in Montague Gardens have reportedly had enough of the rise in crime and the apparent link to vagrancy, and vociferously voiced their concerns with Plato. A quick response by authorities have already yielded a positive result. “I photographed the drugged up vagrant and reported it to Webster,” said ward coun-

-cigarette users happily “vaping” in local pubs and restaurants in Cape Town may soon have to go outside, as the national Department of Health is considering amendments to tobacco legislation. Currently, the “e-cig” cannot be read into the definition of a tobacco product in terms of the Act, as it does not contain tobacco – thus regulations relating to smoking of tobacco in public places do not apply. “Amendments are needed to the legislation to ensure that e-cigarettes are regulated and this is currently under consideration,” city mayco member for health, Benedicta van Minnen, told TygerBurger this week. This current status quo was supplied by the national department to the city when it recently sought legal opinion on the matter. “We are not inundated with complaints, however there has been an increase in the number of enquiries, especially from managers and owners in the workplace. The nature of the enquiries are whether smoking of the product in offices and canteens is allowed; if they should adapt their workplace smoking policy; whether patrons can smoke the device in the non-smoking area of restaurants; and whether the fines are the same as for smoking cigarettes in public places,” she said. She said the city specifically wanted to know whether they can enforce the current tobacco legislation on e-cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes are an alternative method of consuming nicotine, the addictive chemical found in tobacco. They look like cigarettes, but contain no tobacco, or other harmful chemicals, such as carbon dioxide and tar. The “e-cig”, which was patented in China in 2003, is battery operated and converts liquid into a vapour that is inhaled. Although manufacturers claim it to be a healthy alternative to tobacco cigarettes, there are some concerns over the possibility that the vapour exhaled might contain harmful elements. “The jury is still out on exactly how safe, or not, e-cigarettes are. We know that some establishments allow the use of these devices indoors because they emit vapour instead of smoke,” said van Minnen. She says these devices are controversial because they are so new there is a lack of long-term scientific evidence to support their safety. “Some countries such as France and Australia, have gone as far as banning the use of these products in public places. “The World Health Organization (WHO) is currently reviewing the existing evidence around e-cigarettes and preparing a paper for submission to the meeting of the Parties of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, which occurs later this year. “They are also working with national regulatory bodies to look at regularity options as well as toxicology experts to understand more about the impact e-cigarettes may have on health.” When asked whether the city wants current legislation changed to include e-cigarettes in its ambit, she was ambivalent. “Some studies support the use and others oppose it. As stated, in the absence of sufficient scientific evidence regarding the safety and effects of the product, this makes it difficult to support or not support the use of e-cigarettes in public places. “Presently, it is not covered in the legislation and we will therefore await guidance from the National Department of Health,” she said. In New York City, smoking e-cigarettes is banned in public places.

Death penalty is a violent act A very disturbing letter appeared in TygerBurger on Thursday 4 June (“Death penalty a matter for debate”). The writer, after ranting on about addicts asks: “Is it not time that we reopen the discussion around the death penalty?” Our country decided to abolish the death penalty almost twenty years ago, not by political parties or parliament, but by the Constitutional Court which delivered this decisive verdict with a unanimous 11-0 vote. America was not so lucky. This superpower and all other nations where the death penalty is in force are the most violent in the world. Not a week goes past that the news is not dominated by killings, bombings, abductions or other forms of violence emanating from these countries. Death penalty is a violent act and can only operate in an environment of fear, hatred, vengeance, racism and retribution. People who constantly advocate reintroduction of the death penalty are sooner or later going to commit violent acts themselves. Clive DerbyLewis and his henchman Janusz Walus are a good example. Friday nights one could hear him instigating right-wing violence on radio phone-in programmes. Where will this bloodshed end? Today it’s addicts, criminals, murderers and rapists – tomorrow it will be homosexuals, alcoholics, dwarfs, albinos, and who knows who else. That is how the Nazis’ reign of extermination started. The writer and others like him should rethink their tirade. Our country took the correct decision. Anyone who supports the death penalty is himself a potential murderer. KOERT MEYER Welgelegen

Walk the talk on animal rights With reference to the letter published in your newspaper, I completely agree with Ellen Husselmann (“Simpatie met dié arme honde”, TygerBurger, 11 June). It breaks my heart but despite feeding the poor animals, there is nothing more I can do except sign petitions and make my voice heard. The law pertaining to animals is dismal in this country. Personally, I don’t see a difference between humans and animals. The horror stories in the news of late is another reason why the powers that be should change the law and protect the defenceless. They are abused, exploited, and cruelty is on the rise. Let’s stand together and call on those we voted for, and see if they can walk the walk and not just talk. Come on DA, animal lovers also voted to keep you in power. I can only hope, but past behaviour is a good indicator of future behaviour. CATHARINA Monte Vista

City service extends to Bishop Lavis In response to Anonymous’ letter, I disagree that Bishop Lavis does not get service delivery (“Service poor areas to keep WC blue”, TygerBurger, 11 June). On numerous occasions I have SMSed the city about potholes or overflowing drains and their response has been immediate. One night, two weeks ago, I informed them about a dangerous pothole in front of my property and it was fixed the next day. Whenever I have a concern I either inform the city or my ward councillor via SMS or

email. The matter is then attended to. You will regularly spot the city’s blue bags on the pavement, indicating that our streets were swept. Do not use Bishop Lavis as an area where service delivery is almost non-existent. We should all rather do our civic duty and report any problems, even if it’s not in our area. China store glue sticks in the throat I read Lynn Coenraad’s letter with interest (“Balle by Chinese winkel bons nie”, TygerBurger, 11 June). A few days ago I asked my young helper Anvil to pop into the Chinese shop for some superglue. He came out with an entire card of superglues, as that was how they were sold, he was told. There was no slip. I tried to use the superglue, but most units were 100% dry. The rest I managed to squeeze a tiny amount of liquid out of, which half fixed the small item for which it had been intended. This would normally take one superglue squeeze at most, but I had to discard all the units. I think there were six units. It was very disappointing. No slip was given, so I didn’t even try to take them back. I wonder if someone tested the superglue in the stock at the shop? I was so angry, I threw everything away. In retrospect, I should have looked for an expiry date and at least gone back to tell them, but reading about Lynn’s response I wonder if it would have mattered? MARY ANNE MURRAY Durbanville

s ouers moedverlore is en dink daar is geen hoop vir hul outistiese kind nie, sal die Snap-sentrum in Vierlanden, Durbanville hulle beslis verkeerd bewys. Annelies van Rijswijk, stigter en direkteur van Snap (Special Needs Adapted Programme), glo dat daar vir elke kind iets gedoen kan word. Snap bestaan uit twee afdelings – Snap Education, waarin kinders vanaf 2-jarige ouderdom met programme gestimuleer word, en die Snap Academy, wat in Mei 2013 by die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement geregistreer is as ’n onafhanklike hoofstroomskool vir kinders van graad R tot graad 4.

Snap is een van die begunstigdes in TygerBurger se Want Ons Kan/’Cause we Can!-konsert, wat op 27 Julie plaasvind. Annelies hoop juis dat met die geld, wat met die konsert ingesamel word, grond gekoop kan word om die skool mee uit te brei. Daar is twee gr. R-klasse, twee gr. 1-klasse en verder een klas elk van graad 2 tot 4, maar die behoefte is groter. Snap help nie net kinders met outisme nie, maar ook kinders met allerlei ander leerprobleme. “Ons help die ouers met gedrag. Dikwels vorder kinders nie met terapie soos spraakof arbeidsterapie nie, want hulle moet kan luister en hulle gedra om daarby te baat, vertel Annelies, wat voorheen vir 11 jaar ’n onderwyseres by die Vera-skool vir outistiese leerders in Rondebosch-Oos was.

Hulle is geneig om ritualisties te raak. Hulle kan hulself nie in iemand anders se skoene plaas nie en vat alles letterlik op. Daarom moet hulle sinonieme en idiome leer, en wat daarmee bedoel word.” Annelies gaan voort: “Hulle haat verandering, en daarom moet ons en hul ouers hulle op verandering voorberei en ook daaraan blootstel. Kinders kan meer outisties gemaak word deurdat hul rigiede gedrag versterk word. Dat haar optimisme nie leeg is en nie vals hoop vir ouers gee nie, is daar talle suksesverhale as bewys. Sy het haar eerste leerder, ’n dogtertjie van vier, in haar huis op die kleinhoewe in Vierlanden begin onderrig. Die skool word steeds vanuit haar huis bedryf. Sy het later nog ’n huis, waarin sy nou woon, op die kleinhoewe gebou. “In die eerste ses maande het ons ’n agterstand van drie en ’n half jaar ingehaal. Sy is ses ure per dag onderrig en haar ouers het haar ook tuis stimuleer. Dié meisie, wat die hoogste bome geklim het en haar eie ‘jargon’ gepraat het, is vandag ’n BA-student aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch,” vertel Annalies. “Ons volg die individuele onderwysplan (IEP). Dis ’n geïntegreerde program wat by elke kind se unieke behoeftes aangepas word. Ons probeer tot ons iets kry wat werk.” Hulle gebruik ook gebaretaal, Makaton, en PECs (Picture Exchange Communication System), waarin met prentjies gekommunikeer word. Verskillende lande Daar is al meer as 1 000 kinders van oor die hele wêreld met die Snap-program gehelp. Hulle het al kinders van 37 verskillende lande gehad – onder meer van Nigerië, Australië, Nieu-Seeland, Korea en SaoedieArabië. Meeste kom as hul ouers hier kom werk, maar party kom spesiaal. Snap doen ook uitreikprojekte na die Primêre Skool Blouvlei in Retreat en ’n skool in Khayelitsha. Snap benodig nou dringend nuwe apparaat soos ’n trampolien en klimapparaat, omdat die huidige apparaat nou verweer begin raak. MYCITI ON THE MOVE Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain service to start MyCiTi’s expanding network reaches another milestone with a service to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, offering commuters more choice.

The Khayelitsha route (D01) will start in Kuyasa with several stops before travelling along the N2 to Civic Centre station. Buses will use temporary stops at Vuyani, Charles Mokoena, Steve Biko, D Nyembe, Tutu, Dibana and Lindela. The Mitchells Plain route (D03) from the town centre to Civic Centre station in central Cape Town will be a direct route with no stops along the way. In the opposite direction, from Civic Centre station to Mitchells Plain, buses will stop at Sesame, Marguerite, Kerrem and Pontiac before reaching the Mitchells Plain stop in the town centre. These services will run daily from as early as 05:30 until as late as 23:00, offering a safe,

n Saturday, 5 July 2014, MyCiTi buses will commence a service between the central city and Mitchells Plain Town Centre and Kuyasa in Khayelitsha. These routes are the first step to launching a fuller service in support of the City’s vision for an efficient, affordable integrated public transport network serving all parts of Cape Town. The two new routes are not replacing current forms of public transport, but will provide a topup service. The launch follows agreement with bus and minibus taxi operators in the two areas. Residents will be able to link directly at Civic Centre with other MyCiTi services around the central city, the West Coast and Atlantic Seaboard as part of the expanding MyCiTi network. Around Civic Centre there is also

reliable and convenient service for young and old. Mayoral Committee Member: Transport for Cape Town, Councillor Brett Herron, says: “We are delighted to be bringing MyCiTi to the people of Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. We have held successful negotiations with existing public transport operators, including bus and minibus taxi owners, while work on the bus stops and stations is well underway. UWC boxers off to national champs T

wo UWC boxers have secured their tickets to the South African National Boxing championships after winning their final bouts in the Western Cape Boxing Championships held on 7 June. Sinethemba Blom and Nwabisa Tom both received gold medals, while their teammate Sandiso Kota had to settle for bronze after he was beaten in the semi-final. Blom and Tom will travel to East London next month for the national championships, with a goal of getting a place on the South African team that will go to the World Boxing Championships.

Outclassed At a packed Vuyiseka Community Hall in Philippi on 7 June, Blom outclassed Lunga Stemela in what was named the Bout of the Tournament to win the light welterweight division, while Tom went through on a walkover after she didn’t get an opponent in the light middleweight division. It was the third time that Blom, a second year BA student, beat Stemela in as many bouts this year, and said he was very happy

about the win as he had trained hard for the tournament. The bigger picture for him now was a gold medal at the national championships, something that has eluded him in the past. “I’ve always lost in the semi-finals or quarterfinals, but this year I want to go all the way,” an ecstatic Blom commented.

Nervous Tom, who is graduating with a BCom in September, said she was happy to qualify for the national championships, but was nervous because of going to the national event without fighting. “Fights would have given me an opportunity to test myself so I can improve going to the nationals. I’m aiming for gold and I’m training every day to be ready.” UWC coach Ginger Mapasa noted that the Western Cape tournament was very tough and congratulated his boxers for their achievements, saying it shows the good work that the club is doing. The aim now, he said, was for his team to do well in the national championships and make the South African team.

Murray medal hope for Commonwealth Games After a strong start to the 2014 season, South Africa’s Richard Murray from Durbanville is a serious contender for a medal at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The triathlon is on Thursday 24 July. The Games start on 23 July and the final day is 3 August. Sascoc announced that Murray, Henri Schoeman, Wian Sullwald, Kate Roberts and Gillian Sanders have all been chosen to represent the country in triathlon. An initial squad of 155 of the country’s finest athletes in over 15 sporting codes from aquatics to wrestling has been named. Murray is currently fourth in the world rankings behind Javier Gomez from Spain, Jonathan Brownlee from Britain and Mario

Mola also from Spain. Of these three only Brownlee will be in action. But Murray has beaten both Jonathan and Alistair Brownlee more than once this season. Murray has already represented his country on the big stage at the 2012 London Olympic Games, where he finished 17th. Alistair won gold and Jonathan bronze. “I really believe I can win a medal at the Commonwealth Games, but we need a plan to be implemented from the South African team. Other countries already have their plans in place for the race and I hope we can come up with a winning strategy come July in Glasgow. My body will be ready after racing at WTS Hamburg and I believe I can beat the Brownlees,” said Murray.

K

illarney hosted the fourth round of the Power Series this past Saturday. The morning started off with a dry track but this quickly changed as the morning progressed. This resulted in many upsets during the early morning qualifying sessions. By the time the first race started the track was wet. However, this was only the start of the rain to come. The Makita Supercars were the first race of the day and they put on a great show in the tricky conditions. Despite the damp, Nick Adcock and Brad Wadely were in great form as they finished in that order almost side by side. The Silver class belonged to Garth Easom while Stuart Spooner took top honours in the Bronze class.

Then the heavens really opened up as the Charl Eng. Fine Cars took to the grid. The first laps resulted in the red flags being pulled out after Dereck Jordaan (Ford XR6) and Maurice Tascano (VW Passat) had a coming together. The race was restarted after the debris was cleared, and victory then went to Eric van der Merwe (Porsche 944 Turbo) from Ray Cooper (Escort GT) and Piet Matthee (Porsche 944).

Full field Then the Midas Clubmans series was also action packed with a full field of almost fifty cars taking to the grid. Danie van Niekerk drove a spectacular race, taking his Turbo charged BMW from the back of the grid all the way to the front and finally taking first position, he was closely followed by a pack of front wheel drive cars, included Ernest

Liete (VW Caddy) who qualified in 22nd position. However, by the end of the race Ernie secured second position overall and first in his class. Class winners included Michael le Sueur (class D, VW Golf), Eric Nel (class E, VW Fox), and Wayne Kraukamp (class F, Toyota Tazz), who took advantage of the slipper conditions to take third, fourth and fifth overall. Coping with the power of the V8 Masters cars on the equivalent of an ice rink was obviously going to be a problem. Despite that, a justifiably cautious Favio Tafani was able to remain ahead of Marcel Angel, Stephan Young and Charles Arton, who were the only other finishers. The Jive GTi challenge began with the water across the track making waves that rivalled the surf at Big Bay and cars went off in all directions. Well done to Nian du Toit and Stiaan Kriel

for surfing in the right direction while on their way to finish first and second. Let’s not forget Kosie Weyers, Jonathan Aberdien and Ebrahiem Levy, who all deserve special mention.

Worst possible conditions Weyers was third overall in his class C car while 18 year old Aberdien, who had to cope with the worst possible conditions during his maiden main circuit outing, did well to claim top honours in class B. Finally there was Levy, who only finished 12th, not bad for a driver whose final few laps were completed with only three wheels on a water logged circuit. Conditions eventually became so bad that the organisers cancelled the second round of events. Ironically there was no further rain, however, the track remained flooded and was deemed a major safety hazard and risk.

Test series preps players for Commonwealth The success of the five-week Brutal Fruit Netball Cup will be put to the test this week when the SPAR national netball team play a three-test series against Scotland in Cape Town. The tests will be played at the Velodrome in Bellville between 19 and 21 June. “It is a very opportune time for us to play this series,” said Netball South Africa (NSA) President Mimi Mthethwa. “This series gives us a chance to see how the players have progressed.
