21ST CENTURY EDUCATION: DRONE TO GIVE NEW PERSPECTIVE OF SCHOOL
Fly-by open day for Rallim KAILIN DANIELS @k10daniels
A
s Covid-19 limits most activities during the lockdown, Rallim Preparatory School in Sunningdale has found new ways to adapt to the new normal. They will be hosting a “fly-by drone experience” for prospective parents and learners on their open day on Saturday 15 August from 10:00 to 11:30. This as new restrictions have been placed at schools due to Covid-19, preventing parents from physically visiting the school and touring the facilities. The use of a drone is said to provide parents with a new perspective of the school.
The open day tour will livestream via the school’s Facebook page and YouTube. Prospective parents and learners will get to whizz through the building and the nine hectares of the school grounds in real-time. Parents will also get the chance to chat to the edumentors (teachers) and current students to gain a sense of the ethos and culture of the school. With 488 students currently enrolled from Grades 000 to 7, the school’s particular vision has resonated with those in the neighbourhood and surrounds thereby resulting in an acceleration of the development of Rallim. Head of Rallim Preparatory School, Colleen Millar, said that the basic premise upon
which Rallim was founded was a response to the question of whether today’s schools really prepare the children for the future and for jobs that don’t yet exist. “The rapidity with which the world is changing is quite phenomenal, yet schools are built upon a foundation which supports an educational system whose century has passed. We believe that we urgently need to rethink what, why and how we learn,” Millar said. She added that they need to rethink their value-bases and the task of education in a changing world. “This requires a transformation in the way in which schools work a redesigning of them and a redefining of education for the 21st Century. Thus, three
years ago, we put our collective heads together and envisioned a very different type of school – a modern learning environment that is a response to the current climate in education,” Millar explained. According to the school, 2021 will witness the opening of the second phase encompassing 14 new flexible learning spaces and specialist hubs. This will encompass Grades 7, 8 and 9 with additional facilities to house Grades 10, 11 and 12 opening in 2023. “The construction of an astro hockey field as well as the development of an additional field will also be ready for use in 2021,” Millar said.
