Lorenzo Jansen (10), who is blind, touches Arch bishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu’s face after thanking him for his present. Photo: Kim Cloete

) ‘You have a big nose!’

Arch brings Xmas joy MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

“Life is good to me, even if I’m blind.” It was remarks like these from the 22 children at Tygerberg Hospital’s children’s ward that deeply moved Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu during his visit earlier this week. Christmas came early for these children when Tutu and his daughter, Mpho, arrived to hand out presents. Tutu’s laughter rippled down the corridors as he made his way to the children, who were all eagerly awaiting him. “While they are not well, they are still joyous,” Tutu said. He and his daughter handed out gifts such as teddybears, cars and dolls to each child.

Tutu gave his undivided attention to every child, individually shaking their hands, chatting lovingly to them all. Ten-year-old Lorenzo Jansen, who became blind after a miraculous recovery from brain cancer, thanked the Arch for the visit and then asked if he could touch his face. Immediately Lorenzo commented: “You have a big nose!” He moved his hand to his head, and said excitedly: “And a ‘bleskop’!” at which Tutu laughed delightfully. Lorenzo, who now attends the Worcester School for the Blind, told Tutu he wants to play the guitar one day and would love to receive a guitar for Christmas. Tutu was clearly moved by his warmth and laughter, saying he had “a fantastic spirit”. Lorenzo’s aunt Annelien Baartman, said it

was “an absolute honour” to have had Tutu visiting the ward. “It was a real treat.” The children, who suffer from various illnesses ranging from diabetes, cancer, TB and respiratory problems, were very excited by his visit. This visit was a highlight of their stay in the hospital which they will probably never forget. Tutu lauded Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, calling it “a wonderful institution”. He said it was wonderful that mothers were allowed to stay with their children while they were in hospital. “I was in hospital when I was three years old after a burn wound. It was traumatic being alone at such a young age. Here the children feel that someone is with them. It reduces the trauma and increases their chances of getting better.” Before he left, Tutu prayed for

everyone in the ward, blessing the hospital and staff. He made special mention of “those who will have to stay in hospital, while all of us can enjoy Christmas at home”. About his visit, Tutu said: “We have come here to spread a bit of joy, but we got so much in return.” Tygerberg Children’s Hospital communications officer, Laticia Pienaar, said the visit had been a real boost for the children. “Tutu brings so much energy with him and has a passion for giving to others.” . The gifts were given to Tutu in honour of his 80th birthday. He had asked that instead of giving him gifts, friends should earmark them for various causes, including the children at the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, of which he is patron.

Police need help to solve these crimes Delft Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on Friday 11 November at 9:30 on the corner of Toplands and Heuningbos streets, Roosendal. During the shooting it is alleged that five men from a rival gang were shooting at two opposing gang members, who were not injured in the incident. The police, bent on solving the crime and to avoid revenge shootings, were able to arrest five suspects between the ages of 21 and 26.

They were not able to recover the firearm that was used but their persistence in solving the crime paid off after they interrogated more suspects. This led to the recovery of a 9mm pistol and a magazine with 15 rounds at a house in Bergroos Street, Roosendal. They then also arrested two more suspects aged 18 and 21. The suspects that were arrested earlier are suspected of having gang ties and face charges of attempted murder, the last two sus-

pects for being in possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. The firearm recovered was stolen in Kraaifontein in March this year. .On 2011-11-17 at 08:45 a passerby discovered the body of an unknown male next to the bushes in the N2 Gateway, The Hague Delft. According to the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Paul Cillier the deceased died as a result of a gunshot wound to the face and blunt force trauma. The male has since been identi-

fied as 25-year-old Bradley Lintnaar from Voorbrug Delft. Police are trying to trace his footsteps until he was murdered. Anyone with information or who can shed light on the crime is requested to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Paul Cillier at Delft SAPS 021 954 9000 or Crime Stop at 086 001 0111. . On Saturday 12 November at about 3:40 police were called out to a scene, opposite 16 Beechcraft Street, The Hague, where they found the body of Denzil Isaacs

(24), with two stab wounds to the left side of his shoulder and the neck. The deceased and a group of friends went to the pub at Belhar Airport Mall and was last seen alive at 02:00 when his friends left him at the pub. Anyone who can shed light on the incident or who may have witnessed the crime is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Rodney Andrew on 021 954 9000 or Crime Stop 086 001 0111.

Black Tuesday for SA? Nelson Mandela once said, “A critical, independent and investigative press is the lifeblood of any democracy. The press must be free from state interference. It must have the economic strength to stand up to the blandishments of government officials.” Almost 18 years after South Africa showed the world that a peaceful transition in government is attainable; we now face the distinct possibility of sliding back into obscurity, if the Protection of Information Bill is passed in parliament. The health of a democracy is often measured by restrictions on media. The days of rotting in jail for upholding one of our most basic rights – the right to know – could become a reality once again. Since 1994, information deemed to be in the public interest were published without fear of persecution. Countless examples of this freedom permeated the press and contributed to numerous restless nights for those corrupted by power. Now we are at the crossroads. The significance of this bill cannot be overemphasised. A free press has played an invaluable role in bringing “untouchable” citizens to justice – Shabir Shaik, Jackie Selebi, Bheki Cele, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde. When sensitive information was leaked in the Apartheid years, the informant and the journalist or editor could well end up in jail, yet despite this restriction, some continued to defy this evil. In that period the country was rocked by a major political scandal involving the department of information, which was allegedly misappropriating State funds for secret projects. A taste of freedom has left us yearning for more. Or in Madiba’s words, “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.”

Premier Helen Zille talks to Portia Riezenberg whose baby Chloe (9 months) was operated on, on Monday 14 November to fix her cleft lip. They are from Parow.

Putting smiles on little faces MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

Thirty four children with cleft lips and palates have just received the gift of smiling. They underwent life-changing facial reconstructive surgery from 14 tot 18 November at Tygerberg Hospital as part of “Smile Week”. The hospital, Vodacom and the Smile Foundation joined forces to make this initiative possible. Smile Foundation is an NGO that does facial reconstructive surgery free of charge for children from disadvantaged backgrounds with facial conditions. Through its partnership with academic hospitals in the country, Smile Foundation has helped about 800 children to date. Not only children with cleft lips and palates, but also children with ear conditions, some cranio-facial conditions, and burn wounds were operated on. On Tuesday 15 November, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille met the children who had surgery, as well as their parents. She was joined by Western Cape Minister of Health Theuns Botha.

In her keynote address, Zille said the work done by the Smile Foundation and Vodacom is a great example of how the private sector can assist government in delivering quality healthcare to citizens. “Around 80 percent of the health budget is spent on diseases and injuries that are preventable and often a consequence of lifestyle choices. “This means we do not have enough money to provide care and assistance to people living with disabilities. “The value that Smile Week will bring to the lives of these children, who will be given the opportunity of a future with a higher self-esteem, a sense of dignity and most importantly, full and joyous smiles, is truly immeasurable,” she said. Botha added to this, saying: “I am so proud of this partnership where our hospital staff, specialists and nurses are joining hands with Vodacom towards a future generation of smiles. “This is a project that cannot be bought with rands and cents but is borne out of compassion and goodwill.”

‘Abused to death’ of cruelty and abuse. The horse was found after a patrol inspector of the association received an urgent call from a Freedom Farm resident, informing her about a horse lying down in the field behind his property. “On arrival, she was totally unprepared for the shocking scene,” White said. The horse was immediately injected with a strong painkiller and the inspector requested help from three bystanders to carry him to the horsebox. En route to the Epping Clinic, the association’s consultant veterinarian was called to assist and treat the horse. The vet stated the condition of Mr Lonely was likely caused by human cruelty and abuse, and that the prognosis was poor. White says witnesses stated they had seen Mr Lonely pulling a cart driven by the owner and two youths over a period of three days. “They had been driving recklessly around the farm for long periods, beating the horse with a stick and a rubber hose.”

A horse owner, charged with contravening the Animal Protection Act in what is described as one of the worst cases of animal abuse in many years, was granted R3 000 bail in a Bellville court last week. The wounds on the horse were so extensive the animal couldn’t stand. The animal, named Mr Lonely, was dehydrated due to fatigue and in severe shock and trauma. He was lying prostrate on the ground, partially covered by a blanket, his testicles badly swollen and with open welts. The horse couldn’t stand as his hindquarters were giving way and he died shortly after being found. Megan White of the Cart Horse Protection Association last week said the association will call for the maximum sentence to be imposed on the owner and another two adult males from Freedom Farm. They appeared in court on Friday 17 November on charges

Successful raids for police Border Police, stationed at Cape Town International Airport seized a huge total of drugs at the Cape Mail Post Office in Elsies River on Friday. During a routine check at about 8:00, they seized the following drugs hidden in packages to be delivered: . One box wrapped in gift paper containing 2,1 kilograms of compressed dagga valued around R3 500. . Two tiny plastic bags containing 46 grams of heroin, wrapped in one small white envelope valued around R9 000. As yet there have been no arrests for these confiscated drugs.

In another unrelated incident in the Blackheath, Kuils River area on Friday, Western Cape Flying Squad once again proved to be a crime fighting force to be reckoned with. They followed up information of a white Rustler LDV (bakkie) that was illegally transporting abalone. At about 12:00 the vehicle was spotted in the Blackheath Industrial area and it was stopped and searched, during which they found 1497 unshelled abalone. They arrested the driver, a 39-year-old man from Somerset West. Inside the premises the members arrested two Zimbabwean nationals, both 23 residing in Blackheath.

gal dumping of builders’ rubble and tyres. Some of the fines issued were as high as R2 500. Cleaning up illegal dumping is very costly, he said. “A clean environment is an in-

Dié heldin gee om vir diere

Room van oes by ‘Bakgat’

Spiritual dancers flying high GARY VAN DYK

Spiritual dancers in the community are flying high. About 10 years ago husband and wife team, Neil and Philider Oortman, got the calling to form the Eagles Dance Dance academy and they have been growing in strength in the community. They have just returned from the USA where their second group of 10 students graduated. Neil explained that about 10 years ago they started working with young children in Elsies River and Bishop Lavis. “We were really drawn to these young children that were sitting on the corners of the streets while we were going to church every Sunday morning. “So one week we decided to take our music player and instead of going to church, we hosted ‘away side’ Sunday school with the children for an hour. “This was an eye-opener for us when we saw how much they enjoyed it and were eager for more, so we shared Bible stories with them and afterwards began dance classes. “This kept on growing and we were invited to do it in communities across the peninsula but we realised we needed to be more equipped for our task.

“This opportunity came four years ago when we started training via correspondence through an international institute in America. “We did this for two years and finally graduated in the USA in 2009. “Something amazing happened there because we were the only students from Cape Town, and the leaders of the institute approached us and commissioned us to come back home and start equipping anyone who wants to learn more about this Christian dancing, with the opportunity to graduate in the USA. “God has really smiled on us because this year we took our second group of 10 people to graduate there. This year our group was from Delft, Eerste River, Kuils River, Belhar, Mitchells Plain and even Lotus River, which shows how it is growing,” he said. He went on to explain that classes are open to anyone in the Western Cape and even across South Africa. “All churches with dance groups are welcome to register for this international dance course, which starts in January next year with registration for the correspondence course.” For further information they can be contacted on 078 696 5790, 021 952 0463 or email eaglesnandp@yahoo.com.

Ministry in many communities is being done through dance and Parousia Dance Ministries is reaching out to all. Founded in 2000 it is a voluntary community outreach group, proclaiming the Word of God through the beauty and creativity of powerful dance. “Our mission is to make a difference in our community by educating, motivating and helping the previously disadvantaged communities, young and old, to develop their talents,” says founder and director Rochelle Walduck. “Our Message of hope to the community is that they must believe in themselves and the ability that God has given them. You are a vessel full of power, and a treasure from above.” Since starting the group has successfully hosted eight camps from 2003 to 2011, attended by over 1 000 delegates, which in turn gave birth to many more groups, which still operate within their communities. Walduck pointed out that camp delegates

are given the opportunity to present their talents and acquired skills to the community at large at the annual Parousia Dance Mass Production. “Due to the lack of opportunities, support, finances and training resources available for Christian Dance groups, the Parousia Mass Production undertakes to serve as a unique endeavour to allow groups the opportunity to showcase their gained knowledge and experiences. “It also creates a platform for groups to present their talents to the greater community and instil goals, a sense of belonging and purpose to their life,” she said. Parousia embarked on three tours nationally and internationally, where they had been invited to minister and teach dancing. In 2005 they were in Durban, at the TD Jakes Megafest in Johannesburg in 2008, and during September of 2008 they were in Mauritius. This year, a selected group of students from Parousia Dance School took part in the June Holiday Programme, held by the Equilibrium Community Outreach Group.

Catch the dancers of Parousia in action in the production on Saturday 3 December.

Pump the stinker

Light:

Ward council lor in the area, Des mond Jeftha, has reac ted to complaints in the community about being robbed when leaving the Airport Mall in Bel har at night. The City of Cape Town has now in stalled street lights on fields near the centre and the councillor ho pes that these lights will ensure safety to the community especially during the festive sea son.

A water pump failure on the odour vapour condenser at the Tongaat Hulett starch factory was the cause of a foul stench in De La Haye recently.

So says Lundiswa James, the mayoral committee member for city health following an enquiry by TygerBurger about a foul smell experienced by a resident less than two weeks ago. TygerBurger reported on this issue on the front page last week (“Stench of starch irks”). Resident Schalk Burger said the bad smell has been a problem for decades and that many attempts have been made at rectifying the smell. According to James the pump failure on 10 November resulted in off-gasses being emitted directly to the atmosphere, without undergoing odour treatment. The malfunction was reported to the air quality management unit and urgently rectified by the close of business one day later, on 11 November. A closed loop system was implemented at the factory and since the implementation of the system, the City’s air quality management unit has only received one odour complaint and that was from a resident who lives more than seven kilometres away from the factory. James supplied TygerBurger with a complete report about the plant, its activities, the background of the situation and efforts from the factory to control the stench over the past seven years. “The plant processes maize to produce starch and glucose in a process known as wet milling. “Animal feeds are produced from the byproducts arising from the process,” he said. James said one of the by-products is pro-

duced by drying maize fibres and concentrated corn steep liquor in a rotary steam tube dryer. This process results in the emission of gas, known as “dryer off-gas”. The drier off-gas is the main source of the typical cereal odour associated with wet mills around the world. “It is this odour which has given rise to the complaints in the past,” James said. In October 2004, the company indicated they, with the interaction of CPI, the world’s largest processors of corn using similar technology as Tongaat Hulett, have investigated a number of likely solutions to control odour, albeit that none of them has been proved 100 percent successful. “These included process changes, air recycling, lower temperatures, bio filtration, vapour phase ozonation, thermal oxidisers, dispersion from tall stacks and scrubbing,” said James. He said most of these methods have been tried and tested by the company in varying degrees with varying levels of success. In the following year, the factory reported with proof that they improved their odour decomposition station. Witwatersrand University also conducted a volatile organic compound study and trials with caustic scrubbing of the dryer off-gas and modifications to the feed dryer station. When these options proved unsuccessful, the company embarked on a programme of replacing their driers and the steep liquor evaporator to enable a closed loop system, from which a reduced volume of off-gas is bled off to be treated before being released into the atmosphere. The system (approximately three storeys high) had to be manufactured abroad and imported at a cost of R16 million. In conclusion, James said the closed loop odour control system is considered to be the best available method for odour control for this type of application.

Brand new shoes GARY VAN DYK

Learners in Belhar have more than a good leg to stand on, after getting new shoes last week.

TygerBurger Ravensmead & Belhar Bladsy 9

Study on chilli’s effect

Gerald Siljeur who said that Symphony Primary also benefited from the donations. “Learners at Symphony Primary got shoes on Tuesday last week and they were very happy to receive these shoes,” he said. “I was glad to help the foundation by going to these schools and identifying the learners who needed shoes because there is a high unemployment rate in the area and many families are struggling. “We should always be trying to help our learners who are in need and having decent shoes on their feet will go a long way in showing them that there are people out there who care about them. Now they must show their appreciation by striving to do their best with their education.” Peters thanked Siljeur for his participation as one of their most dedicated and longstanding facilitators.

The UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is recruiting volunteers for a study on the effects of chilli on the human body. The aim of the study is to measure the ef-

fects of chilli on the body’s metabolic rate, body temperature, blood glucose and insulin levels. The study is aimed at those who are in the early stages of insulin resistance, a sign of approaching diabetes. For more information and to apply contact Dr Jacolene Kroff by Wednesday 14 December on 021 650 4568.

Three schools in the area were visited by the Bobs for Good Foundation last week with representative from OUTsurance and 94.5KFm who donated R35 000 that was raised with the annual Gun Run. The students of Accordion Street Primary and Dr Van Der Ross Primary were the recipients of 256 pairs of brand new South African-made school shoes on Thursday. The Bobs for Good Foundation donates quality leather, locally-made school shoes to children in need all over South Africa. “Bobs for Good aims to give the children we benefit hope, pride and dignity, as they walk proudly in their very own brand new school shoes. “It was an absolutely humbling and rewarding morning. Our small team could never have done it without the funds raised from The 94.5 Kfm OUTsurance Gun Run and the enthusiasm and great attitudes of those who helped us,” said Lauren Peters, operations manager of the Bobs for Good Foundation. Schools full to capacity With only three weeks left before the end of the school year, schools in Brackenfell, Durbanville, Delft and Kuils River are full to capacity. The Western Cape Education Department is wrapping up its preparations for the 2012 school year, which includes the finalisation of enrolments. Says Bronagh Casey, spokesperson for education minister Donald Grant: “The completion of enrolments for the following school year is imperative, as this determines the number of staff that will be allocated to the particular school, the amount of furniture and stationery required and the number of learning materials such as textbooks.” According to her, this year’s early enrolment campaign has been a success, with high enrolment figures being captured throughout the province. “The greatest demand for enrolment has been in the metro region, with some areas reporting that they are full to capacity,” she says.

Unemployed women in the community are getting the opportunity to enhance their skills in hair care to empower them. Snippers Hair Academy is continuing its aims of helping these women with a range of beauty courses at its new premises in Cravenby. Edith Collins is heading the academy and for the last few years has empowered women to make a change in their financial needs. “There are always opportunities for people who are skilled in this field,” she says. “Originally we only catered for students in hair cair but we have now expanded to include other aspects in the beauty care field. “These now include a cour- Edith Collins, centre, with some of the ladies completing the se for nail care, and one for Hair Care course at the academy. While enrolment has been high in the Eden/Karoo, Overberg and West Coast districts, there is still capacity in some of the schools. “We are expecting around 100 000 learners to qualify for enrolment in Grade 1 next year, and approximately 80 000 in Grade 8.” Bronagh says the department does expect some late enrolments next year, especially involving learners that have migrated from other provinces or have enrolled late for practical reasons, such as family relocation. “We have identified areas where there might be high levels of demand. These include Mitchells Plain, Nyanga, Phillipi, Delft, Kuils River, Langa, Hanover Park, Manenberg and Oudtshoorn,” she says. According to Bronagh there are still parents in the province who have children entering Grade 1 or Grade 8, but who have not yet enrolled them for 2012 . “I strongly urge them to do so now. Given that many of our schools are already full, enrolment at this stage may require some assistance by the WCED district offices.

Hulle sal van 14:00 af bymekaar kom by Frank Louwpark by Bellville-Suid se taxi-staanplek.

Christo Davids (Errol in 7de Laan) was die eregas.

Erasmus-primêr in Kalbaskraal. Meer inligting is beskikbaar by Davis (021 951 2239 of 083 989 6971).

HIV message by drama GARY VAN DYK

Tygersig Primary learners are leading the way when it comes to HIV-aids awareness. The school in Uitsig recently hosted an awareness day where learners presented a programme of drama and dance that was enjoyed by fellow learners as well as members of the community who attended. This programme was guided under the auspices of the Cape Heart organisation headed by well-known actors Ivan Abrahams and Andre Samuels.

These two revealed that they were inspired by the learners after spending just 2 hours a week with them for about five weeks before they hosted the awareness day. While Abrahams confessed that he found it challenging, Samuels was excited about the possibilities that it gave to the participants about the talents that they have. “The youngsters energy was somewhat overwhelming but at the same time they have bucket loads of enthusiasm and a willingness to work if one manages to press the right buttons. “What the audience saw was all theirs. We just explai-

ned the concept and asked for three short scenes to fill a 10 to 15 minute slot. On the day they delivered as they acted and rapped their way into the hearts of the learners, their teachers and their families,” said Samuels. Cape Heart has been running as an NGO since 1997 when actors affected by the closure of CAPAB, decided to form a company and continue with the work that was started by the Education Drama Department used to do. More information from their website: www.capeheart.org.za.

A stand against drug abuse GARY VAN DYK

Get ready for some mirth with meaning when Dennis Stander comes to Bishop Lavis. The Rehoboth Community Worship Centre, and Rehoboth Wellness and Community Project, in conjunction with Dennis Stander, take their stand against drugs and alcohol with the production of One Man Stand at the hall of the Bishop Lavis High School on Sunday. Starting at 15:00, entrance is free and they are inviting all those who have been affected by this scourge in our community to come and see how an

amazing transformation took place in the life of a once tik-addicted Stander. His testimony is powerful; his One Man Stand comedy is lifechanging, and you will be blessed! Dennis Stander was born in the seventies and grew up on the Cape Flats and he embraced acting from a young age by performing in plays at his local church where he found his passion for the stage. Later in life he got caught up with the scourges of society and became enslaved to alcohol and Dennis Stander takes his drugs for years. For more inforstand in Bishop Lavis on mation you can contact Rev. Isaac Harley on 081 483 7261. Sunday.

‘We feel free to make the music we want to make’ LOUISA STEYL

They consider themselves free thinkers, but it’s their whimsical quirkiness and simple honesty that makes Since Free very different to the current norm. Bellville band, Since Free, is made up of Ronél van Lingen and Gershan Lombard. Although the pair met four years ago, through mutual friends, they only started performing together earlier this year, Ronél explains that she was approached to put together a musical and started jamming with Gershan for ideas. The two started writing together and as she says: “The songs were actually awesome.” They now gig at least once or twice a week and practise regularly between writing new songs. When asked about their name, Gershan says: “We had quite a struggle to get something. It’s a mindset thing,” he says, adding that they see themselves as free thinkers. “We consider ourselves to be on the path of enlightenment,” Ronél says. “Since we started the band we have been free to make the music we want to,” she says. Both Ronél and Gershan credit acoustic rock, acoustic folk, blues and indie as the influences behind their music. They describe their own music as “melodic, acoustic, alternative, rock”. Ronél explains their writing process, saying that Gershan writes the music. “I conjure up the melody and lyrics,” she says. The two write in English and Afrikaans. “It depends which language the song speaks to me in,” Ronél points out. “We try to keep as positive and open as possible,” Gershan says

of Since Free’s lyrics. “We acknowledge the not so positive side of life, but mostly we try to enlighten people,” Ronél adds. Gershan says it’s important for them to make their music meaningful. “It’s accessible without being commercial,” he points out. Ronél, who has been writing since she was just nine, explains that she writes songs about her feelings and how she imagines others to be feeling. “I’m an emotional writer,” she states. Since Free, recently recorded their first single, “Cherry Blossom Woman”, which has seen positive feedback from Taxi Radio and Zone Radio, where they have also already been interviewed on air. The band’s plan now is to use money made at gigs to record an EP. They hope to make their music freely available and make money from festivals and shows. Since Free will be performing on Wednesday 7 December at Alma Café and on Monday 19 December at the Barleycorn Club. To find out more about the band, visit their Facebook Page or www.sincefree.com.

Give families a good Xmas Do you have canned goods stacked in the back of your cupboards because the children don’t like what’s inside? Or did you buy more groceries than you needed? Donate it to a worthy cause – there are people who need it. Living Hope, in conjunction with TygerBurger and Fruit & Veg City, will be spreading the cheer with hampers of hope to disadvantaged communities and they need our readers’ help to make it a success. By simply donating dry food items or canned goods, you can spread the Christmas cheer to those who are facing trying times. Living Hope consists of four ministries, Living Grace, Living Right, Living Way and Living Care, each performing a vital role in the upliftment of communities around Cape Town. To get involved is easy: simply drop your donation into any marked box at a Fruit & Veg City store and consider it your good deed for the month. In early December, hampers will be distributed to the communities in need. Start packing – you only have until 2 December to change a family’s outlook on life.

Focus on maths Mathematics could become more prominent in schools with the establishment of the First Rand Chair in Mathematics Education at UWC. The levels of achievement in mathematics in the final Grade 12 examination are far below that which can be described as acceptable. Furthermore, too few learners are enrolling for the mathematics examination in Grade 12 and some of the consequences of this situation is that a large percentage of learners do not qualify for studies at universities or for positions requiring high levels of skills in the subject. The First Rand Foundation in conjunction with the Department of Science and Technology embarked upon an initiative to address this unsatisfactory state of affairs. They made available four research Chairs in Mathematics Education for which universities in the country had to apply. The main objective of the work of the Chair is to work with schools to improve the quality of the achievement levels in Mathematics in the Grade12 examination, to increase the number of learners who study maths and to develop professional mathematics teacher programmes. The University of the Western Cape has been awarded one of the four Chairs in this field and they will work closely and co-operatively with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) to add value to the improvement initiatives of the WCED. The First Rand Chair initiative at UWC will work with schools in Langa, Bishop Lavis/Elsies River, and Mfuleni/Strand/ Kleinvlei areas. Professor Cyril Julie is the holder of the First Rand Chair in Mathematics Education at UWC.

There wasn’t much room for movement but the strategy of the Brothers Sport/Focus team paid off giving them the top spot in this year’s Tiletoria West Coast Express Cycle Race.

of some 30 riders. We did this by having someone from our team regularly launching breakaways. This helped in keeping the speed fast.” In the end it was team mates Kemp and Chris Esch who paved the way for Van Onselen’s sprint to the finish. The race and funride saw a total number of some 1 300 entries. There were only two incidents where cyclists fell during the race. One was taken to hospital to receive stitches in his calf, but was back in time to enjoy the festivities at the prizegiving. “We had a very good turnout, considering the weather and I believe it is because of the good prizes and because the people know that the money goes to a non profit organisation,” said Mike de Kock who helped organise the race..

Leonardo van Onselen managed to cross the finish line a split second before Matthew Wentworth in the sprint to the finish during the men’s Elite category in the 85km race. “We were out of here quite fast, with the speed fairly high,” Van Onselen said after the race. The riders remained bunched as they peddled down the R27. Just after the Atlantis turn-off three riders launched a break-away attempt. “About 10 kilometres later we caught up with them again. The wind wasn’t much of a factor this year. The wind we had, was at our backs during the last 30km of the race which helped. The light rain we had close to Atlantis played a bigger role.” Soon thereafter other riders broke away from the bunch, among them Van Onselen’s team mate Riaan Kemp. “About 10km before the finish we caught up with them again,” said Van Onselen adding that this flat race makes breaking away from the bunch very difficult. Spanne verloor ondanks 100’s SAREL BURGER

Metalware:

The Williams Body Building Club, at the John Ramsay High School, under the guidance of Lorenzo Williams, in a wheelchair, has been doing well in recent competitions with Clint Williams front, raking in some silverware. He was the SA development champion in the national championship held in Mafikeng, was first in the Iron Man Classic at Bellville Civic Centre and was third in the WP championship also held in Bellville. Next to him is Joshua Nortje (9), who came third in the WP under13 championship. The club would like to thank Old Mutual for the donation of some new equipment to the club, and ward councillor Asa Abrahams for helping them with sponsorship of medals and trophies. The club is hoping to host their annual Christmas party for their juniors and welcome any sponsorship or donations for the event. For further information call 071 566 2599 or 071 917 6162.

Lavis cricket ‘strong’ Bishop Lavis Cricket Club is staying strong in local competitions with another win under their belt. Spinners Dale Rainers and Adrian Roberts delivered match winning performances with their bowling when they defeated Mitchells Plain by 33 runs during a WPCA 1C league match at Lavis Park last Saturday. The home team batted first and managed to score only 155 in their 1st innings with Simeon Fondling top scoring with 35 runs. Ralph Williams was the pick of the Mitchells Plain bowling attack, taking 5/41. Mitchells Plain scored 226/8 in their 1st innings after struggling at 61/4. A brilliant knock by Charles April who scored 92 took the initiative away from the home team who must have had their worst fielding display of the season during the last session of day one. A run-out early in the second innings didn’t help the Bishop Lavis

cause, especially when they were trailing by 71 runs and losing wickets at regular intervals. But, a classy 33 and calypso-styled 54 runs by Justin Miller and Cheslyn “Mokerman” Roberts respectively, helped the home team to 196 runs all out giving Mitchells Plain a target of 126 to win. With the seam bowlers struggling with their line and length on a wicket that was slowly becoming friendly for batting, skipper Dale Rainers opted for the spinning route. The visitors soon lost their last 6 wickets for only 24 runs after being 64/4 and well on their way to a famous victory at Lavis Park. Adrian Roberts ended with 4/13 whilst Dale Rainers was equally impressive with bowling figures of 4/27. The boys of Bishop Lavis will play Northerns Goodwood in their next league fixture at Goodwood. The Club has already qualified for the AMA-20 final which will be played early next year.

Top semifinal action awaits THOMAS CAROLUS

The people’s team take on the students this weekend for an exciting semi-final. Engen Santos face Bidvest Wits University on Sunday in the semi-final of the Telkom Knockout Cup at Mill Park. Santos are getting their form back and Wits, even though they are not playing well, are collecting the points. The local team have a lot of character and if they score first then they’re going to be really hard to beat. “We want to do well in the cup, but moving up the league is more important for us,” says Boebie Solomons the Santos coach. “At the moment we are going through a very bad patch with injuries and this has contributed to our recent run because we’ve lost key players at critical times. “Yes, we’ll do our best but as I said it’s the league which is our priority.” Wits coach Roger de Sa was more at home because it was a home game for them. “It is always nice to play at home in a cup game,” he says. “A lot of people have asked why we have been scoring so many goals of late. The simple answer is I don’t know. “We just keep doing what we’re doing at training and it seems to be working.” Santos captain Tyren Arendse was also feeling confident. “The confidence is returning for us after a difficult start to the season and we are now just two wins away from lifting a trophy.

“Obviously we would have liked a home draw, but I think our record at Mill Park is quite good. Like us they have a young team with exciting players so hopefully it will be a good game.” Bidvest Wits captain, Stanton Fredericks said he prefers to hold the underdog card in this game against Santos. “We can’t say that we know how Santos play, it’s a dangerous thing to do because they can surprise us on the day. “We are going to treat this game like we treated all the games from the beginning with the same approach as we did with the match against Amazulu and the one against Jomo Cosmos. “To reach the finals will be great. A final of a cup match is rewarding both financially and as well as for recognition. There is no motivation needed for the players. “I think players will be motivated to give 100 percent to get to the final.” Santos striker Erwin Isaacs felt that a good cup run will be certain to boost morale but their priority was the league. “I feel I’m back to my best after my injury troubles and hopefully the goals will start to come. “It’s going to be tough, but to be the best you’ve got to beat the best sometimes. “Defensively Wits are really good, especially at home; they also have character and don’t give up so we must take the game to them and not sit back.” The other semi-final will see Orlando Pirates travel to Durban to face Golden Arrows on Saturday.

Coaching Pulse started a rugby programme with Durbanville High School to nurture young talented players. Western Province and Springbok Gio Aplon, gave some insights and showed techniques to better their playing capabilities. The programme also incorporates fitness and conditioning.
