ust more innocents die?” That is what the community wants to know after another innocent life was lost to gang violence in Elsies River last week. On Tuesday 30 July Norma Lottering left her home in The Range to go shopping, minutes later she was dead, caught in the crossfire of gang warfare raging in the area. On Friday the community in the area got together in protest against the violence that
has erupted in this neighbourhood, and in other parts of the Cape Flats in recent weeks. It seemed like a quite Friday afternoon in the area surrounding the blocks of flats in the area where the protest was being held, children gathered in the playparks enjoying themselves but there was still a tension in the air. “You have to be aware all the time,” says one of the residents in the area who did not want to be named. “It may seem quiet now, but the gangs can start shooting at each other any time, and
they don’t care about these children or the people in the area,” she said.
Community At the march Matilda Vantura, who runs a skills and crafting project in the area, spoke passionately about Lottering’s commitment to her community as part of the sewing class in which she participated. “She loved life and helping those less fortunate in her community,” she said. “It’s so terrible that her life had to end like this, at the hands of heartless thugs who
want to destroy our communities.” While police are still investigating the incident there are members of the community who want the police to intensify their war on the gangsters and drug lords in the area. “Police started a campaign against them a few months ago,” said Warren Le Roux, from Clarke Estate who was at the protest. “Problem is that where they have acted against a drug den, the addicts still need their supply and that is where the problem starts.” V To page 2.

Police need your help to solve murder case
GARY VAN DYK
Police need your help to solve a murder. On Friday 2 August at about 03:10 an unknown black man was found dead in a park at Hooke Street, Belhar. Inspection revealed that he died after suffering two stab wounds to his chest. Witnesses on the scene allege that four unknown men and an unknown woman on a bicycle were seen fleeing away from the deceased who was struggling to walk and later fell down in the park. The victim, who was bald and clean-shaven, was dressed in brown suede Asics takkies, blue faded jeans, a black relay jeans belt, black tomato wristwatch and navy jacket. He is thought to me a foreign national. Police found his cellphone earphones lying next to him and his black wristwatch was still on his person. Police are attempting to trace the next of kin or the identity of the victim and any possible information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects. V Anybody with information can contact investigat ing officer, Detective Sergeant Pumi Xesi at Belhar CID, 021 953 8100 or 072 697 1110.
Police in Bishop Lavis hosted a special party for a special volunteer in the area last week. Aunty Evelyn du Preez is a household name in the area where she has been a volunteer at the trauma room for the past 13 years and on Friday 2 August she was treated to a very special birthday party at the station. Police, friends and fellow volunteers gathered to give her a surprise party to celebrate her 60th, and she also received a certificate for her work at the station. The communication officer at the station, Capt Marie Louw, said that this remarkable lady was somebody who truly cared for her community. “She is not just doing service at the trauma room, but is also available 24 hours for the police at Bishop Lavis for when we find small children in the street, babies that have been abandoned, or children that are taken away from their parents due to certain circumstances,” said Louw. “When she cannot find safe houses for these children, she will make sure of their needs first, even getting her husband and herself to sleep on the floor to ensure that the children are in a warm bed. “Over the years she has also become known as a fighter for the rights of women
Station commander, Brig Colin Jones, congratulates Evelyn du Preez for her work as a volunteer and caring community member. and children, assisting abused women, and assisting people at court if they do not know certain procedures.” Some 14 years ago this compassion came to the fore when police “dropped” a sevenmonth-old baby girl on her doorstep. “She decided that she will raise that child,” continues Louw. “Today that baby is a beautiful 14-year-old who is doing brilliantly at school with a bright future ahead of her through the inspi-
ration of this dedicated woman in our community. “While she has a daughter and son of her own, with five grandchildren, she is also a mother to us at the police. She’s always bringing food, cake or sometimes a small present for some of us, just to show how much she appreciates our work in the community. We wish her well for many more years and want to say a big thank you for her caring.”
“We must work with police to become their eyes and ears as part of neighbourhood watches or anti-crime forums,” he said. In Delft, police are offering a reward of up to R25 000 for information which can lead to the arrest and conviction of the suspects involved in the murder of 19-year-old Megan Hendricks and 18-year-old Jarryd Manuel. These two teenagers are also on the long
list of innocents who lost their lives to gang violence after they were gunned down in cold blood in May. No arrests have been made and police are hoping that the reward will motivate new information from the public. V Anyone with information can contact the investi gating officer, Detective Sergeant Elton Marthinus at Delft SAPS, 021 954 9000 or 083 358 2537.
FROM PAGE 1 “The dealers get to know where the supply is needed and that is where the fighting starts – it’s about who controls those markets.” “While the police can play a part in keeping those dealers out of our areas, we must also be part of that fight by becoming more active in the fight against drugs and crime in our neighbourhoods.”

Woman dies in backyard dwelling fire
Unfortunately an elderly woman, Anna Mitchell (58) was fatally injured by the blaze and was declared dead at the scene by attending paramedics. Damages caused by the fire is approximated at R45 000, while the cause of the fire is still being investigated. The city’s Disaster Risk Management Centre issued a renewed appeal to residents to be fire safe when working with open flames. When going to bed, residents should isolate electrical devices and extinguish gas burners, candles, lamps and paraffin stoves in order to prevent fires.
Posters nullify traffic system The telecommunication system which reports on traffic light failures in the City of Cape Town is in jeopardy due to posters and bills pasted over these devices. As a result it nullifies the innovative new system says Subcouncil chairman and Bothasig ward councillor James Vos. Control boxes are aimed at speeding up the responses of repair crews whereby the traffic light faults and failures can be reported to a 24-hour call centre. “How can anyone read the identification number when it is obliterated by a bill pasted over it?” Vos asks. He adds that posters and bills pasted to electricity substations, meter boxes and traffic light control boxes are on the increase, and he condemns these as effectively acts of vandalism. He says together with staked advertising signs, and those tied to lampposts, these degrade the environment, create the perception that matters are out of control and, as a result, property values deteriorate. “As if the situation wasn’t already bad enough, poster pollution now poses a lifethreatening consequence because illegally
pasted bills hamper identification of potentially dangerous intersections; just one of these posters could result in the loss of life of a motorist or pedestrian,” said Vos, “and urgent action must be taken.” Traffic light failures impact adversely on all road users. A new system just introduced by the City of Cape Town’s Transport Department empowers both motorists and pedestrians by giving them the opportunity to reduce the life-threatening consequences of such occurrences. “The City now operates a 24-hour Traffic Signal Fault Call Centre, share-call number 0860 00 1948, which enables the public to report faulty traffic lights” says Vos. The control box at each of the more than 1 300 intersections controlled by traffic lights, has recently been fitted with, and now displays a unique identification number. This enables the city to identify the intersection which in turn speeds up the process of getting a repair crew to attend to the problem. The city appeals to all road users to immediately report traffic light faults – your phone call could save a life.

Saint wants youth to follow lead
Festival celebrates cultural diversity
GARY VAN DYK
There’s a “saint” in Delft who packs more than a world-beating punch, and he wants more youth to “follow” his ways. Saint Dumas (16) is a Grade 10 learner from DF Malan High in Bellville who has just returned from participating in an international mixed martial arts and kickboxing tournament in America. This was the first time that he took part, and in his division he came first in Kata, second in Light Contact, and third in Clash Sparring for an overall third in the competition. While it all started in 2005 when he was interested in doing karate, he now concentrates on his kickboxing skills and wants to use his skills to teach other youngsters in the area. “This sport has meant a lot to me,” he says. “Its not just about fighting, but there is the discipline that has taught me to become confident about myself in any situation. “You also have to apply yourself to your training with lots of concentration needed if you want to succeed at the sport. “There are a lot of children interested in the sport here in Delft, but we need a place to practise all the time,” he said. Supporting this young man in his quest are his parents, Ursula and Douglas, who feel that their son can make that positive difference for youth in the area. “The sport has changed my son in a big way,” says mom Ursula. “He used to be a little shy and introverted, but now he has lots of confidence, and that is why he wants to start teaching others in the area. We have already started but we have to hire a hall and put up the equipment every time. “The youngsters come here to ask when they can train, but we have to disappoint

them every time.” Dad Douglas is more serious about getting a training facility going in the area. “Just get me the ground, I’ll build it!” he says, the family owns a hardware store in the area. “We need to get our children away from the negative influences around them, the crime, the drugs, the gangsters and activities like this can show them that there is a way out
of the worst social circumstances through sport. “Saint has experienced where it can take him, and now he wants to share it with the youth here in Delft. “If we can get the ground I will build it, but we need a place where we can put up the equipment on a permanent basis.” V For more information about the project the family can be contacted on 076 757 5016.

A festival with the purpose of recognising and celebrating Tygerberg’s vibrant cultural diversity will be held over three days in October. The Tygerberg Heritage Festival takes place from Friday 25 October until Sunday 27 October. This festival is an initiative of the Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) and is an event for the entire family. The theme, Building Bridges, aims to do just that between local people, businesses and organisations, irrespective of race, sex, age, faith, sexual orientation or social, educational, economic and cultural backgrounds. “We want to connect South African citizens and locals from diverse cultures who are working or studying in Bellville and the greater Tygerberg,” says Kemi Adebayo, executive director of the Tygerberg Heritage Festival. The majority of activities will be held at the AFM church (AGS) building in Bellville. The festival starts Friday 25 October with presentations and exhibitions at the Arabic School in Bellville, followed by the Tygerberg Benefit Music Concert from 19:00. On Saturday, attendees will be treated to a fashion show, live music from local artists and dance performances. On Sunday a five-a-side football competition will be held at the tarmac at the Bellville Station between 15:00 and 17:00. V To participate or to book a stall, phone Kemi at 079 084 2987 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Have a say on shack re-block Members of the public are strongly urged to have their say on the draft policy regarding the proactive re-blocking of informal settlements. Pro-active blocking is the repositioning of informal structures in a re-configured, logical layout. It addresses the urgent need identified by the City’s Disaster Risk Management and Fire Services sections, as proactive blocking will reduce the occurrence and spread of fires in informal settlements. The re-configured layout provides for spaces between structures, courtyards for the community, fire hydrants (where possible) and access and egress roads for emergency and service vehicles. It will also create opportunities for a greater number of households to be provided with one-on-one municipal utility services. Currently, there are 204 informal settlements of varying sizes and densities in Cape Town, which accommodate approximately 193 000 households. These settlements are characterised by a lack of formal tenure, public space and facilities; inadequate access to municipal services; a lack of convenient and safe access; and non-compliance with planning and building regulations. Despite the progress the city has made in the provision of basic services, the organic form of these settlements makes the provision of service delivery very difficult. In addition, informal settlements are at great risk because of the effects of disasters. The compact nature of informal settlements limits access, which puts the lives of inhabitants in danger. The process started on 1 August and ends on 31 August. V Members of the public are encouraged to submit their comments via email: Levona.powell@cape town.gov.za; telephone: 021 710 9319; fax: 086 576 1610 or address: City of Cape Town, Informal Settle ments, Corner Strandfontein Road and New Ottery Road, Ottery (For Attention: Levona Powell).

Making talents come alive GARY VAN DYK The Bellville South Youth and Women Centre is on a mission to make your talents come alive. Every Wednesdays, until the end of 2013, classes will be taught on decoupage, various forms of painting techniques and making amazing items out of waste. Joy Warries of the centre says that her teachers, Shirley Petersen and Natalie Scottman, are eagerly waiting on ladies that they can introduce to these skills. “We want to empower the women in our community,” she said. “Handmade arts and craft is still a popular art form and the market is growing daily. I always like to point out one of our success stories, Hester Claasen, who joined one of the beading classes in 2011. “She found her niche in the mosaic art form and today we are all proud of the beautiful items she has produced.” Warries also pointed out that the talent
is spreading to wider areas with seven of the participants who have started their own businesses now in a mentoring programme with the Cape Craft Institute to prepare the ladies for the various markets locally and internationally. “The Institute was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the work produced by the ladies,” she said. There is also a waiting list for the next fabric painting class, mosaic class and the next computer classes. Ladies that are interested to do a Home Management course are also welcome to come in for an interview. Warries also invites ladies that are unemployed especially matriculants, to bring in their CVs so that they can be added onto the database at the centre. Various classes run from Mondays to Thursdays at the centre from the premises behind the Bellville South Civic Centre and Library, from 10:00 to 13:00. V For more information ladies can visit the centre or call Francis on 084 776 3563.

Don’t sell booze to the drunk This is an open letter to all businesses within the greater Bellville and Parow areas that sell or serve liquor to members of the public, especially to those who are already under the influence. Having been in operation for the past 12 months, the Voortrekker Road Corridor Improvement District (VRCID) needs to voice its concern regarding the illegal sale of alcohol to persons already under the influence of alcohol. The law is clear; no business may sell or serve alcohol to another person who is already under the influence of alcohol. By doing so, businesses are contributing towards alcoholism, anti-social behaviour and possibly even sexual violence against women and children. From the VRCID’s point of view, we are adamant that businesses within the VRCID must take note and stop this practice immediately. Their staff need to be informed that they may not sell liquor if the person buying the liquor is already under the influence; ignorance of the law is no excuse. The end result of this practice is that the VRCID must spend of its time and budget finances to attend to anti-social behaviour and public violence (fighting). It is unfair to law abiding VRCID levy payers that the minority takes advantage of those addicted to alcohol. In most instances, it is the poorest of the poor who are taken advantage of by such businesses. All that these businesses are interested in is making money; they do not care about the person once he or she steps from the premises after they have bought or consumed alcohol. Another issue which the VRCID cleansing teams and also the City of Cape Town has to deal with, is the number of empty cheap alcohol plastic containers that
we have to pick up every day to ensure a cleaner Bellville and Parow area. It all goes back to those businesses selling such cheap alcohol to the homeless or those without jobs. The VRCID will from now on identify those liquor outlets who continue with this practice and bring them under the attention of the authorities and their landlords if they are tenants. We will follow a zero tolerance approach in this regard. Lastly, we urge members of the public to Give Responsibly. DEREK BOCK Chief Operations Officer: VRCID
Here in Ruyterwacht most of these individuals race around without licences, yet they want to draw up petitions. Talk about double standards. We need more traffic patrols in the area to weed them out. These cars are modified for the sole purpose of illegal racing on our public roads and for nothing else. ANONYMOUS Goodwood

TYGERBURGER | RAVENSMEAD & BELHAR Woensdag, 7 Augustus 2013
Medal favourite: Western Province will send a strong team for the Len Barnes Memorial karate tournament in Durban this weekend. The Welgemoed Kyokushinkan dojo will have confidence in their juniors bringing back some medals. Romano Mento (pic) is one of the province’s hopes for a medal. In addition, the imposing figure of Siyabonga Tyandela (Welgemoed), is also one of the favourites. PHOTO: WAYNE SYLVESTER

ABSA PREMIER: 1 POINT EACH
Ajax and Arrows call it a draw
Where did it go?
amontville Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town earned a point each when their Absa Premier league match ended in a 1-1 draw at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Peter Wadabwa fired the home side ahead early in the second half before Lebogang Manyama netted the equaliser for the visitors. The Urban Warriors squad included a new face in goals, Brandon Petersen who made his professional debut ahead of Sean Roberts, and in the starting line-up were seven players all products of the Ajax Cape Town Youth Academy. The game started with both teams taking a cautious approach. Ajax Cape Town played their famous diamond formation that allowed their wing-backs to venture forward to join the attack.
Dominated The hosts dominated the early exchanges by using their width and created the first chance in the seventh minute when Wadabwa met Dumisani Zwane’s cross, only to send his header wide of goal. The it was the visitors who started creating some opportunities and in the 18th minute Keegan Dolly delivered a teasing cross from the left but Manyama arrived a second too late at the far post. The first shot on target arrived just three minutes later with Dolly advancing through the middle before unleashing a powerful drive which almost caught Siya Mngoma by surprise, but the Golden Arrows goalkeeper was able to palm the ball to safety. The home side had one last opportunity to take the lead on the stroke of halftime when they were awarded a free kick on the right,

only for Siphelele Hleleni to curl his effort wide. The Ajax Cape Town defence of Lolo, Isaacs, Hlatshwayo, and Aiden Jenniker worked in tandem to keep a clean sheet. The game swung from end-to end, a long ball was played into the Ajax Cape Town penalty box, Lucky Nguzana firing at the Ajax Cape Town goal, Isaacs cleared the danger as Petersen provided cover for the defender then Jenniker blocked a shot by Wadabwa. The second half continued in the same fashion as the first with Golden Arrows pressing forward and Ajax Cape Town attacking on the break.
Goal Golden Arrows opened the scoring when a shot at goal though a crowded goal area was parried into the path of Wadabwa who hit the back of the net from close range. Manqoba Mngqithi’s men came close to doubling the lead in the 52nd minute when Hleleni lost his marker on the edge of the penalty area, only to send his shot inches over the crossbar. Muhsin Ertugral made the first two substitutions bringing on Nathan Paulse for Koen van de Laak. The extra striker added to the impetus of the Ajax attack. Manyama was clear on goal and attempted to lob the ball over the goalkeeper. Mngoma made the save. The battle of the midfield continued with Golden Arrows shading Ajax Cape Town for possession, but it was Ajax Cape Town who made the breakthrough. Manyama received a through-ball and he showed composure under pressure from the Golden Arrows defence and goalkeeper to steer the ball into the back of the Golden Arrows net for the equaliser.
