Little House on rocks Little House on the Prairie, a well known landmark on the Cape Flats, once a favourite after hours drinking hole degenerated into a drug den that affected the surrounding community. Since 2006 the council has been locked in a battle through the courts to rid the community of the criminal activities that were taking place there, and it finally came to an end last week when the council took over the property, but nothing prepared them for the destruction that had taken place with wanton acts of vandalism leaving the place in ruins. MORE SHOOTINGS AND ARRESTS: COPS IN FIRING LINE

No peace for Belhar GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

T

here’s still no peace in Belhar with more shootings claiming lives over the weekend. On Saturday at about 23:20 an incident happened at Chestnut Place where two residents were sitting in the courtyard. They were approached by two armed suspects, who then fired indiscriminately at them, hitting them in the head and chest. The 23-year-old victim, Rian Martin, who was hit in the head died instantly while the 29-year-old victim, Baren Petersen, was rushed to hospital in a serious condition, suffering gunshot wounds to the chest, but died later. The unknown suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made.

Police are investigating two charges of murder and anyone with information is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Christopher Kleinsmith on 021 953 8100.

Shots In another incident on the same night members of the Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling in Matroosberg Street in Belhar, when they heard shots being fired. They went to investigate and as they approached the corner of De Mist and Adam Tas streets, members of the community approached them to report the incident. Investigation revealed that two suspects were shooting at the complainants and as police approached the scene one of the suspects still had a gun in his hands. As they got nearer a beer bottle was flung at them.

While police were trying to restrain the gunman he attempted to flee and police were forced to fire at him when he pointed the gun in their direction.

Wounded The suspect was wounded in his head by a grazing bullet and arrested. Police recovered a Norinco pistol and a magazine with 10 rounds. He will face charges for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, pointing of a firearm and attempted murder. On Sunday police were also called into action at about 06:45 when a complainant alleged that he was assaulted with a firearm and gave the police information where the suspects were. Members of Maitland Flying Squad responded and armed with a search warrant

they went to the residence in Nederburg Road. The first occupant who opened the door realised it was the police and tried to retrieve his gun that was hidden in his pants. As officers struggled with him they noticed three other suspects. Investigations revealed a Z88 pistol on one of the men that was reported stolen in 2009. Another search revealed a 9mm Star pistol, which was not reported stolen as well as a quantity of dagga where the men were seated. Another four suspects, two men and two women, were also arrested. The six suspects will face charges for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession of dagga. V Anyone with information about any of these inci dents can contact the police at 10111.

The Delft Dynamite Kickboxers is all about giving youth in the area a kick-start to empowerment, and they’re taking on the world to show their class. When you look at the list of accolades that this club has achieved in local tournaments it hard to believe that they’ve risen to the top in the last three years, and it’s done with less than a shoe-string budget. Adrian Nel, who heads the club, laughs: “There’s no budget!” The reason that there is no budget, is because Adrian does not charge to train the youngsters, it’s just a labour of love. “Its been difficult and tough, but I can’t give up on their love for the sport,” he continues. “I’ve seen how this sport has changed the lives of many of these children, they experienced how the dedication and training helps them with their confidence to face any obstacles in their way. Its not just about fighting its about understanding the sport. “For many of these children it’s not a club any more, we have grown into a family.”

As a family the Dynamites have also grown into strong fighting force at tournaments. “What we’ve achieved so far, is only the tip of the iceberg,” continues Adrian. “With our lack of funds we can’t take as many entrants to tournaments as we would like, but those that have gone have all been winners. “We only come back with silvers or gold.” This is indeed an achievement when you consider that they only practise on Mondays and Wednesdays. “I’ve had to cut the times because we have to pay for the hall,” says Adrian. “There are also many more children who would like to join up but we just don’t have enough space for them, but we rarely turn anybody away. “I feel that this is an important activity for them because it teaches them such a lot. Yes, there has to be aggression when they are in a bout, but with that aggression comes discipline, a discipline that teaches them to still be friends with each other after the bout.” V For more information about the needs at the club call Adrian on 078 289 0848.

‘Should have done it long ago’ GARY VAN DYK

An empty bottle of Johnny Walker Black is stark testimony to the activites that once took place at the Little House on the Prairie.

@gvdcapejazz

While the City of Cape Town won its battle to take occupancy of the landmark, Little House on the Prairie in Belhar, it resembled a battlefield as the authorities moved in last week. After a lengthy legal battle to evict the occupants, victory was finally in sight to stop the criminal activities that were taking place there, but it seems that the former occupants wanted to show one more act of defiance – they trashed the place. The sight that greeted the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, members of the media, and various law enforcement members looked like a scene from a war movie. Rubble and rubbish was strewn all over with walls and windows broken, fittings destroyed and broken furniture smashed around the property. An empty bottle of Johnny Walker Black amidst the rubble was the stark testimony of what this place once was. While it had become a den of crime in recent years many Cape Flats residents will remember that it was once a “respected” smokkie, where you could get some of the best brand refreshments, at any time of the night. Those days were long gone in the last few years.

Prosecution The Council-owned property appeared on the city’s radar in November 2006 when the National Prosecuting Authority advised the City that they were proceeding with criminal prosecution of a gang leader with links to the property and that the city should be proceeding with an eviction application. Services of the South African Police Services, Metro Police and Law Enforcement

were enlisted to investigate the allegations. It was then also found that illegal structures and extensions had been constructed on the property without city permission and in contravention of the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act. Furthermore, business and criminal activities were being conducted at the property and unlawful occupiers were residing there. A protracted legal battle ensued, but on 9 September 2013, the Constitutional Court dismissed their application for leave to appeal the High Court decision, concluding that the application had no prospect of success. The date for take-over was arranged by agreement between the parties to be Friday 1 November. “We are not going to take this lying down,” said Smith, as he walked through the destruction. “This is a slap in our face for the agreement that we had with the occupants to allow them sufficient time to move out, but this vandalism will not go unpunished.” While disappointed with the state of the property Smith added that the city would not detract from changing this property to a place of pride in the community.

Tel: 021 948 5706 l www.mkem.co.za

“We have positive plans for this place,” he said. “Our plan is to have members of the specialised units housed here, and include SAPS from Belhar who desperately need new premises. “The community is going to be proud of the positivity that will come from here with regards to their safety.” As aircraft roared in to land at the adjacent Cape Town International Airport it seems like there is a new journey ahead for this former drug den as the councillor made arrangements for police and Law Enforcement to ensure the further security of the area, and to have a temporary fence erected around it. Perhaps these activities can be summed up in the words of a wise pensioner watching activities from across Robert Sobukwe drive. “Hulle moet dit lankal gedoen het, lankal.” (They should have done it a long time ago.)

First Citizen Journalist of the month award CECILIA HUME @celiahume

Very often it is the people in our communities that are at the forefront of news – they observed the accident around corner, have the inside info on the murder down the street, and know all the hidden jewels within their communities. One such person is Mary Anne Murray, known among her friends as Mam, who is the first recipient of TygerBurger’s Citizen Journalist of the Month award. Mam who hails from Durbanville, has a passion for art, a keen knowledge on herbs, and most importantly a very curious personality with an interest in human behaviour. “I keep my eye out for tit-bits of news mostly satisfying my own curiosity, ” she says. Mam has also been sharing these tit-bits of news with TygerBurger for a very long time, and more recently became one of our citizen journalists when she also started writing stories on happenings in her community. Even more recently Mam played a vital role as TygerBurger’s citizen journalist on

the scene of a robbery passing on information and photos. “TygerBurger shows its wisdom by creating this award,” Mam said as she accepted her award. “I feel very humble and honoured to receive this award as the first recipient. It is a significant award as I think it is the ordinary man on the street who is often at the cutting edge of local news – may the campaign encourage a wider range of newsworthy stories to everyone’s benefit in the long term.” Mam says she has always been an avid fan of TygerBurger. “I love contributing to such an efficiently distributed newspaper with such a positive focus.” She is a semi-retired chartered accountant who discovered her creative side in later life. With the extra time on her hands, she does a great deal to promote local artists and takes on interesting projects from care situations, to being the executor of estates, getting involved in church events. “These activities allow me to meet many people.” On the literature side she also contributes to the Catholic church’s weekly newspaper

Partnerships ‘the only way to tackle crime’ GARY VAN DYK

@agvdcapejazz

Bellville South CPF is serious about breaking down crime and building partnerships for safety in the community. They recently hosted a special breakfast to bring all the stakeholders together to plot the way forward to form these partnerships to fight crime in the area. “Crime and other social ills in the Bellville South area are becoming a very big concern for the Bellville South Community Police Forum,” said forum chairman David Sias. “That is why we arranged this breakfast in order to build stronger partnerships with all other stakeholders. We believe that together we can address these social ills and also crime in the community.”

PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Sias added that this partnership breakfast was a huge success, but that they would also like more organisations, churches and sports bodies to join in the fight against crime and social issues. “It was obvious from all the speakers that they were serious about playing their part in making the community safer,” he said. “We want more people to be part of this initiative because it is difficult to achieve objectives for the greater community if you are working in isolation. “With this partnership we will increase our resources and we want to help people if they have a project that will address the needs of the community. “We need to step up and claim back our children from negative influences, and reclaim the communities as ours.” V David Sias can be contacted on 073 315 2128.

Sex abuse workers in need of support New research has shown that more needs to be done to help volunteers who help with sexual abuse cases. While much research has been done on the supportive needs of professionals working with sexually abused children, little research has been conducted on the secondary trauma experienced by volunteers working within this field. This qualitative study was completed by Ms Claire Kingwell, a Master’s student from North-West University. She explored the supportive needs of volunteers working at an organisation for sexually abused children in a small community in Somerset West. Her supervisor was Dr Carlien van Wyk from the Centre of Child, Youth and Family Studies in Wellington and Mr Werner de Klerk acted as her co-supervisor. Both supervisors are from the North-West University. Child sexual abuse is neither a new phenomenon nor specific to South Africa. It affects children across the lines of gender, culture, race, religion, socio-economic status and geographic areas. Many researchers agree that the incidence and prevalence of child sexual abuse within South Africa is significantly high and poses a large threat to many children.

Assistance As a result, government has implemented legislation and various policies to protect children from sexual abuse, as well as to provide the victims of such abuse with the necessary assistance. Mental health services in South Africa are not equipped to meet the needs of sexually abused children due to a lack of funding and resources. Through various welfare programmes, government aims to provide support and treatment to children who have been sexually abused. Professionals working with sexually abused children work in a highly stressful environment and often show symptoms of vicarious traumatisation, secondary trauma, burnout and compassion fatigue as a result. Vicarious traumatisation refers to changes that occur in an individual’s cognitive schemas and personality due to exposure to the traumatic experiences of another person. South Africa in particular faces further problems, in that the welfare programmes are often underfunded and lack the support needed to effectively help sexually abused children. This has led to a need for community members to volunteer in order to help alleviate some of the stress on professionals working within the field of child sexual abuse. Data From the data obtained in the group discussions and individual interviews, it was revealed that the volunteers had similar supportive needs to those of psychologists, social workers and counsellors working in the field of child sexual abuse. It is recommended by the researcher that such organisations must meet the needs of the volunteers in order to solve the problem of volunteer attrition. Supervision and debriefing are essential to supporting the emotional needs of volunteers and decreasing secondary trauma. Additionally, professionally trained therapists should be available for individual supervision on an on-going basis. Volunteers should be encouraged to enter personal therapy to express their concerns and to receive emotional support from these organisations. During training, volunteers should be made aware of secondary trauma and the effects it may have on their personal and professional lives. Various coping strategies should be discussed and encouraged.

- Miekie, Kenridge V Sassa seems out to put pensioners off by sending them back time and time again with new demands and by the time you get back they tell you ‘sorry certified copies have expired’. They don’t take the bank statements that the bank sends you. Every month you have to go to your bank and get it there. Why do they think we are standing in line from 03:00 in the morning? Because we don’t have money to draw statements and pay for taxis to keep coming back time and again. - Pat V Have you noticed almost all food preperation shown on TV encourages viewers to handle food with bare hands instead of using cooking utensils. Hands touch other things! Stomach upsets, or worse! Also no hand protection used by staff and customers in many food stores. - Chas V Dear Lilly, re. your letter“Where’s compassion for our animals?” (TB, 30/10). I am shocked about the couple that shooed away that thin dog. May God have mercy on the human race that can sit and eat, while, somewhere, in their backyard, there is an animal dying of hunger. Shocking to say the least. Who can look into the eyes of that animal, and bring food to their mouths? Please reader, intervene for that animal. If it could speak to you, what do you imagine would it say to you? Sies, skaam julle! - Ouma ) SMS’e kos R1,50 elk. SLICE OF LIFE

Paper jam: TygerBurgers destined for Bellville and Durbanville are loaded into another vehicle after the vehicle originally transporting them was involved in an accident on the N1 last Wednesday.

‘Skrik wakker, politici, polisie!’

GERTJIE IS GATVOL Bellville

GRANT TWIGG Epos

Time for a direct route to the CBD Now that MyCiTi seems to be taking over all routes, why will Golden Arrow not in all earnest run a full service for the northern suburbs from Kraaifontein, Brackenfell, etc. straight into Cape Town CBD? It only makes sense to run a service now. MyCiTi says it is only going to run here in three to four years’ time. It is not fair that Golden Arrow only runs from Durban Road into Cape Town. Please consider extending your routes as a matter of urgency. A while ago the trains were troublesome and they ran a luxury coach service from all affected stations in the northern suburbs from 05:45, it took 20 minutes into the CBD! Why can’t Golden Arrow do the same? We don’t need luxury, just buses running on time and regularly. Also, the last bus back from Cape Town at say 20:00? Please consider.
