COMMUTERS INJURED: PUBLIC RUNS FOR COVER

Shots ring out in taxi war GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Police in Delft are planning to step up their operations to curb taxi violence after commuters had to run for cover last week. Last Friday at about 19:20 there was chaos in Delft Main Road as gunshots rang out and the public and commuters frantically ran for cover. Captain Joe Wilson, communications officer at the station reported that, according to witnesses, the occupants of three cars, a green BMW, a white BMW and white Golf started shooting at taxis at a taxi rank. “Our investigations so far revealed that

three taxis, two White Toyota Quantums came under fire,” he said. “An occupant in one of them suffered gunshot wounds to his stomach, and the owner of a shoe repair shop in the area was injured in his buttock and right arm. “The passenger in another vehicle that was passing the scene, a 12-year-old boy, was also grazed by a bullet and injured his right arm.”

Returned fire Wilson also pointed out that there were reports that some of the taxi drivers who were under attack also returned fire. Two women, coming from work had just

been dropped by their transport when they had to scamper for cover, and injured themselves as they fell in their efforts to reach safety. “Two taxis, a VW Polo and a Toyota Corolla were also damaged during the incident,” continued Wilson. “Further investigation has revealed that one of the BMWs was reported stolen in Somerset West.” Police are investigating several charges of attempted murder, and recovered 41 spent rounds from an R4 rifle, as well as 9mm and .45mm spent rounds on the scene. Shortly after police patrolled the area and arrested a 29-year-old man who was found

with a 9mm Star Pistol with seven rounds.

Investigations They are busy with investigations to establish a possible link to this shooting. Later that day police in Phillippi found the White BMW abandoned and recovered a R4 rifle, two magazines and a .38mm revolver with 5 rounds. These firearms will be investigated for a possible link to the attack. Col Basil Vallei, acting station commander at Delft expressed his disappointment with the local taxi association’s way of dealing with the situation. V To page 2

Want to be part of betterment in Belhar? Ward councillor and chairman of Subcouncil 6, Willie Jaftha, is inviting your input for improvement in the area, or for projects that will benefit the area. “Each councillor receives a budget of R700 000 for operational and capital projects,” he said. “I want to give people in this area a chance to tell me what is really important to them. “They can do a needs analysis in their area and projects can be upgrading of parks, lighting in the area, repairs or upgrading to roads and sidewalks, even purchasing of sports equipment for youth projects.” He pointed out through this programme two netball courts had already been constructed on request from people in the community. The problem of illegal dumping was also receiving attention and these areas where dumping took place were being revamped. “One of the areas where you can see this in operation is in Edison Drive where I received a complaint from Alfredo Basson who lives in the area. “He was living next to an open corner plot where dumping was rife and he wanted us to do something about it. “I called on the services of the parks department and we have managed to create beautiful garden settings at the identified areas. “We hope that this will encourage people to look after it and report those who want to break it down or start dumping there.” During September an Arbour Day project was also started where 150 trees will be planted in Ward 12 over the next six months. “We are looking at beautifying the entrances to the area,” continued Jaftha. “The parks department will supply the plants.” V Further information from 021 918 2054, or email Tania.

Dawn Cares cares, but needs help The Dawn Cares community centre in Sarepta is earning their name as a caring community organisation. Through various projects they assist the community with education, empowerment and self-efficacy programmes. But there are many challenges, says Dawn Roode, community leader at the centre. “It is your prayers that carry us to conquer all challenges. Our community feeding, empowering and caring projects are up and running,” she says. The centre runs a food kitchen every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and they distribute nutritious meals to about 100 people. “During the school holidays the total increases because then the school children also come for their meals. We have different meals on offer on different days,” she says. They serve dishes like soya chunks and vegetable breyani, vegetable stew and rice, egg curry and rice, fish or mince or chicken pasta, soup and bread, pap and smoortjie and sandwiches. “Most of our food is made with vegetables because it is sometimes the only time that the people get to eat vegetables. Sometimes we have extras like fruit, juice, cake and party packs,” she said. As part of their caring motto, they also distribute clothing and toiletries, and twice monthly have blood pressure and blood sugar checks for all those attending the food kitchen and the community at large. On Tuesday and Thursdays the centre runs empowering projects like their free learner’s licence classes. But, Dawn says, they need help. “Our stove that we used to cook on, broke. Now we desperately and urgently need a gas stove. Is there anybody able to help us? This is an urgent need,” she said. “Also remember, your unused goods is somebody else’s gain. We need a gas stove, big pots, any foodstuffs, sandwiches, fruit and party packs, rechargeable batteries, a flash drive, possibly also a modem,” she said. She said they also help anybody in need, as well as learners, with the following items: household items, clothing, toiletries, sanitary towels and “Love boxes” for seniors (80 to 103 years old). Workshops to teach love of reading We need to think of ways to get learners reading and writing. This was the aim of a conference attended by Donald Grant, Provincial Minister of Education and a number of educators at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River. The education fundis got together at the conference last Thursday, themed “Teach, apply and live reading and writing”. The aim of the conference was to share ideas, best practice and experience concerning reading and writing, that is, different approaches to how reading and writing is taught, as well as strategies on how to intervene with learners struggling to read and write, a provincial education statement said. They also discussed the management of reading and writing in schools at the conference – a number of practical workshop sessions for educators – presented by leading educators in the field, the statement said. Some of these workshop topics included: “Teaching thinking skills for better comprehension”, “How to get learners interested in reading”, “Differentiation and the teaching of writing in the English First Additional Language classroom”, “Scaffolding Writing and presenting for senior phase”, “Stories on cellphones to get teens reading”, and “Teaching Writing in a bilingual classroom”. The minister sat in on a few classes and thereafter addressed the media.

Be Belle of the Ball with Amy’s help

Candice Swartz, left, and Amy Swartz accept the donation of shoes from television personality Elana Afrika, centre.

GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

For every young girl in matric, the end of year dance must be a special event and Amy Swartz from Belhar is on a mission to make that dream come true. She has started a project, Bell of the Ball, for young ladies who may not have all the financial resources to make it a reality and transform them into the “Belle of the Ball” when they attend their school’s matric ball. They recently hosted their launch at Vacca Matta in Bellville where they raised money for their project and showcased some of the donations that they have received since making their appeal to the public. Elana Afrika, popular radio and TV presenter, is supporting the initiative and donated some of her shoes to the project at the launch. With this project Swartz, who is assisted by her cousin, Candice Swartz, offers Grade 12 learners from disadvantaged circumstances an unforgettable experience at a fraction of the cost. For R100 they supply a selection of dresses that they can choose from, shoes, makeup, hair-dos, nails and accessories. Amy pointed out that the project was called, Bell of the Ball, with a connection to her daughter Isabella, who is her own Bell of the ball. “We started in May this year to help girls who are not fortunate enough to have that special matric dance,” she says. “So we act like a fairy godmother to make their dream come true, by supplying the dress, shoes, jewellery, nails and makeup. The fee that we charge is only to cover the

cleaning of the dress so that we can maintain it for many more to use in the community.” She added that so far various companies are sponsoring the nails, hair and makeup, but they have been blessed with people who share their dream of making this time in a learner’s life special. “One of our biggest donations was made by SALT (Sharing Abundant Life Together), a social empowerment organisation, who donated more than three boxes of dresses,” she said. “We’re not stopping our drive for donations, because we can always use that dress that you are never going to wear again. It can make a big difference in another’s life.” Swartz also pointed out that another motivation for her to start the project was there were so many girls in the community that needed help. “When it came to matric balls there were always girls who needed help,” she said. “I would help with hair and makeup, and I had four dresses of my own that I could help some girls with. That’s when I realised that I could do more – I love to help people and this is a special night for any girl.” She started appealing for donations and as word spread it all got a bit too much for her to handle alone. “That’s when I roped in my cousin Candice to help out with admin,” she smiles. “At the moment our space is very limited because we have over 200 dresses and boxes of shoes and jewellery. So we are looking to get some storage space.” V For more information Amy can be contacted on 081 474 4499, or Candice on 071 181 1552. They’re also on Facebook, www.facebook.com/pages/Bell oftheBall/487162758031148.

HOOFARTIKEL

Hou in gedagte: Elke mens moet homself bewys, so gee hul ’n kans. BEWONDERAAR Bonteheuwel

Peace and love is what world needs Some times as human beings it becomes a habit for us to

engage in atrocities in the name of religion, race or origin. I was very saddened by the killings of the muslims and non muslims in Kenya. This is all in the name of revenge and religion. It makes me however think of all the people being oppressed and killed because of race, origin and religion. South Africans should wake up and learn through these day to day inhuman acts. The attacks on foreigners, muslim and non muslim, could be of awakening to inhuman and merciless groups like these Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda. I love my country and yes I’m black! I wouldn’t want destructive acts like these to happen in my country. When people get killed we watch, read and do nothing. We sit back, relax and pretend nothing is happening. But remember someone, somewhere is watching and following. Let’s preach love South Africa! Love one another, you don’t lose anything from loving one another, be it black or white, mixed, Xhosa, Afrikaans, Zulu, Venda, Swahili, Shona, Somali. We are all people. I condemn xenophobic attacks because they make our country look like a circus with a bunch of arrogant, senseless human beings who don’t have a heart for other people. When attacks like these happen we start looking so far for answers? Some things are avoidable. One Love ... history teaches us when the oppressed becomes strong, the oppressor gets weak. Peace! Awareness days grate my carrot August was Women’s Month; drawing attention to the plight of women. But, there’s never anything for awareness of the plight of men. Specific men yes, but not men as a whole. How many people have noticed that? RUDI KRAMP Parow East

What about Service Delivery Week? Throughout the calendar year, specific days weeks or months are set out to bring awareness of one or other issue such as Women’s Day, 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse, Cancer Day and Mandela Day, etc. This special awareness period makes us the public very much alert to the aims and goals of the organisations involved in these important issues and campaigns and so reaffirms commitment to the end result. As I was thinking about this issue I could not help but highlight the fact that poor service delivery is becoming a national plague in some of our communities and how the citizens who are not receiving service delivery are being more violent and vocal. They are running in the streets and act out barbaric scenes on the state’s property by destroying municipal buildings and equipment. The initial blame is not the state’s property but the public servants employed or voted in to ensure service delivery. To our honourable state president who is the custodian and monarch of service delivery for the people of South Africa may I propose that at the beginning of every year he declares that we have a Service Delivery Commitment Week whereby parliament and all state department staff advertise themselves and their roles in service delivery and pledge commitment and dedication to deliver service. In that week the public and state officials can open channels and find each other by introducing who in each respective municipality is responsible for respective service delivery. This will lead to a better more dedicated service delivery to an enlightened public who demands that service. KEITH BLAKE Email

The City of Cape Town is delighted to have been named as a Host Port for the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race, which returns to the Mother City for the 10th time next year. Currently in its 40th year, the Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s premier offshore event and the longest and toughest race in professional sport. The event is an exceptional test of sailing prowess and human endeavour on a scale like no other. It will be the 10th time that Cape Town hosts the prestigious race, which gives the city another opportunity to show off our breathtaking coastline and promote the Mother City. Started in 1973, the Volvo Ocean Race is the world’s premier ocean race. It attracts

the best professional sailors, sailing the most technically advanced racing machines in the world, through the most hostile oceans on the planet. The race route for the 2014/15 event will see teams leave Alicante in Spain in October 2014 and head south some 6 500 nautical miles to Cape Town. From here, they will race to Abu Dhabi before going to Sanya in China and Auckland in New Zealand. The teams will then head around Cape Horn before stopping at Itajai in Brazil and going on to Newport, Rhode Island on the east coast of the United States. They then cross the Atlantic to Lisbon in Portugal before going on to Lorient in France and then to the finish in Gothenburg, Sweden.

ALL STARS: READY TO BE PICKED

WP win first Iqhawe Week LIAM MOSES

A

glut of Western Province players have been named in the South African Rugby Legends Association Iqhawe Week All Star Team following the conclusion of the tournament. The All Star team will not play any matches but Pieter Muller, head of development for SA Rugby Legends, says that it could raise the profile of the players and lead to them being selected for elite squads at their respective unions. “The All Star Team couldn’t be a formal national side because all 16 provinces were not competing, but we wanted to give recognition to the players who played well at the tournament,” says Muller.

Elite squad “It’s all important for the unions to understand that they should be looking at the players we picked for their elite squad system. because these kids are 15 and they can go on to the Grant Khomo Week setup. All we can do is to contact the unions and tell them what the selections are. It’s up to the unions to put it through. We will do what we can to get the kids in.” The Iqhawe Week was hosted at City Park in Athlone last week and eight coastal provinces competed in the u-15 tournament. The teams were Western Province, Boland, Griquas, KwaZulu-Natal, South Western Districts, the Golden Lions, Border and Eastern Province. All players selected for the provinces came from developing rugby schools and the vast majority came from schools that play in the Vuka League, another initiative of the SA Rugby Legends. Muller says the point of the Vuka League

and the Iqhawe Week is to create a means to develop players and offer them a “pathway” to the elite set-up at their unions. “We want to give these kids another opportunity to be seen. We are not looking at the top schools. We are looking at the rural schools and the dormant schools. Nobody looks at those schools. We want to give them the opportunity,” he says.

Teams “Our Vuka programme in the Western Cape has over 80 schools. That’s where the Western Province team was picked from, from schools that never played; schools in Langa and Atlantis. That’s what we want to create all around the country.” Players in the Western Province team came from 16 different schools around Cape Town, including Mountview High in Hanover Park, Spine Road, Portlands and Lentegeur High Schools in Mitchells Plain and Darul Islam in Greenhaven. Province eventually won the tournament after defeating South Western Districts 14-6 in the final. The Iqhawe Week will be hosted in a different province next year and all 16 provinces will take part. Muller adds that the tournament will have “the same credibility as the Grant Khomo and Craven Weeks”. V The full Iqhawe Week All Star team is: Dillon Kaalmeyer, Laaiq Felton, Toufeeq Hendricks, Ziyaad Adams, Bradley de Jongh (Western Province), Gerlin Richards, Geraldo Charles (Boland), Wilfred Saun derson, Junior Bouwers, Bennie Louw (Griquas), Gci na Mngombezulu, Wayne Ngubane (KwaZuluNa tal), Shaun Adams, Damion Karelse, Bradwin John son, Yulbremmer Keffers, Justin Jansen (SWD), Craig Mkhize, Archippe Bomborro (Lions), Gwarube Luyolo, Ngalo Sive (Border) and Richmond Gora (Eastern Province).

Blocked

mont, HS Tygerberg, Chesterhouse, Cravenby, De Kuilen, Brackenfell en Belhar. Die verdedigende kampioen is Brackenfell.
