Gangs from pop culture GARY VAN DYK

H

as pop culture played its part in popularising gangsterism? This is a question that many people across the peninsula are talking about after the recent spate of gang related violence in the Western Cape. While police and various political and community leaders try to find solutions certain sectors are beginning to think that we should start looking at the root of these problems. Many have tried to lay the blame on economic circumstances but it has been pointed out that poverty has always been a part of our society yet in previous years it has produced its fair share of professionals who

have risen beyond their circumstances. A retired teacher who did not want to be named spoke about experiencing those changes through the dark days of apartheid, and acknowledged how attitudes of learners changed as the media changed the face of modern pop culture.

Composers “During the apartheid years our youth were influenced by a pop culture that was influenced by the likes of Miles Davis and Marvin Gaye, even Michael Jackson,” he said. “The poetry of composers like Bob Dylan, Langston Hughes, and Bob Marley, made them aware of freeing their minds, and on the local scene the music of local heroes like

Robbie Jansen, Basil Coetzee, and Abdullah Ibrahim were the theme songs of the fight against apartheid. “What has happened to this freedom for which the youth from Bonteheuwel, Bishop Lavis, Hanover Park and all over the Cape Flats fought so hard?” He continued by pointing out how as a teacher he noticed that when the “music” changed, the children changed because the world was giving them gangsters in pop culture to become their new role models. “Too many of our radio and TV stations then, and still today, want us to believe that their ‘ratings’ and audience research dictates what they feed to the minds of our young. “We are reaping the harvest of what they

have sown into those minds.” Carol Edson agreed with these thoughts and pointed out that the image of the anti-hero is also being popularised.

Disrespect “We also see that genres like rap and dubstep must have a dark edge with foul language, and disrespect for woman, where they are always portrayed as scantily clad prostitutes,” she said. “Our youth see this constantly and it becomes acceptable and ‘cool’ to be imitating these attitudes.” Michael Malan pointed out that too many people have allowed the roots of these problems to flourish. From page 2 “Parents are the best role models any child can have and they need to take responsibility when their children step out of line. “They need to be more present and proactive in their children’s lives,” he says. Dave Solomons, from Bonteheuwel, who is also a singer who performed with many of the top jazz acts in Cape Town for many years, agrees that the the popularisation of mediocre music is only one of the factors that has played a part in the growth of gangsterism. “The education system is also to blame,” he says. “They took music out of our schools. “In the past our schools produced so many stars on the soccer, rugby and cricket fields, as well as top athletes. These activities used to keep us together even if you played for opposing teams, you played your game and shook hands at the end, and even forged friendship that lasted a lifetime that way.” Joey Collision, from Ravensmead, considers himself a bit of a cultural activist, feels that attacking the root of the problem is of the utmost importance.

“I’m more inclined to look at hip-hop and rap as being the protagonists for gangsterism,” he says. “With guys wearing their trousers to just under their butt crack, baggy sweat shirts, loads of jewellery and bouncing around with ‘attitude’ as if they are the most important person in the world, has all led to teenagers mimicking their actions, and with peer pressure, being led down a road that has led to death and destruction.” “We believed the lies propagated by the former government and current government, the education systems, the church and even our families and friends, and, as a nation, we’re too scared to stand up to those who oppress us.

Popularisation “Could it be that South Africa has taken on too much of the West, particularly America, and tried to copy them in all they do, to the detriment of our societies?” Abdel Naroth felt that it may be too simplistic to lay the entire blame on pop culture.

“Since the mid 1980s when radio stations started feeding our children this rubbish, I warned people that we would reap the benefits of making the gangsta music popular. “Everybody laughed at me, I called radio stations, and I was told that their ‘research’ showed that this is what listeners wanted. “Today they just continue to infect young minds, but are they going to change now? I don’t think so because then they will have to accept the blame.”

Freedom Buddy Wells, renowned saxophonist, sums it up by pointing out that the world has forgotten about its artists who want to leave a legacy of positivity. “It is only through disciplined practise that an artist or musician can attain freedom of expression, what many call mastery. “Behaviour is much the same. Without responsibility, freedom is impossible. If we all behaved in a responsible manner, external laws and controls on us would not be necessary.”

P n P Hyper in Brackenfell joined hands with the police on Saturday to raise awareness about missing children and human trafficking.

Van der Vyver said while the programme was very popular with schools, not all were able to cover the costs involved including transport costs and materials. “We are extremely grateful to Absa bank

Participants who request more advanced training are referred to the YPW Computer and Life Skills Academy in Bishop Lavis. Here a three-month computer and life skills course is offered with lots of benefits. Those who complete the course are referred to employment agencies. Aftercare and follow up support is an integral part of the their approach, with an SMS notification system keeping youth on its database informed about employment opportunities. Youth are also encouraged to volunteer in their community to plough back and to deepen their skills base to become more em-

ployable. Julies added that this was in line with their ethos of life-long learning. “Job shadowing opportunities are organised where volunteers shadow professionals in their workplaces and learn new skills. “It also operates a unique CV Bank where participants’ CVs are uploaded for easy access from potential employers. This removes the stress from unemployed youth of running around for fax facilities or email access when employment opportunities arise.” V For more informatiion email Frank Julie at young people.za@gmail.com, send an SMS to 074 350 8582, or call 021 823 7837. GARY VAN DYK Unemployed youth in the community are getting a major boost to find work through a very active organisation. YoungPeople@Work which launched last year is an organisation of youth by youth, who are determined to support unemployed youth to turn their lives around. Founder Frank Julies says that the organisation has already trained hundreds of unemployed youth from various communities and assisted many to access employment. “In our structure youth are regarded as assets not liabilities,” he said. “Youth are treated as the leaders of today not tomorrow and are actively part of the design of programmes, not just passive recipients of predesigned programmes.” “Their positive and limitless energies are harnessed to support their holistic development and they are taught that finding a job may be important, but finding and constantly working on oneself is more important.” The organisation operates at three levels to empower unemployed youth. Through its Youth Empowerment Weeks it enters communities and hosts a free three-day life skills workshop at a local library in partnership with various stakeholders. The focus is on professional job-seeking and networking skills, personal development and leadership as well as a day of sharing employment and training opportunities through various partners. Its partnership with local libraries is strategic since it believes that our libraries must become centres of learning. Through the Smart Cape computer system at libraries, YPW volunteers are de-

Drug support group meets GARY VAN DYK Help is at hand for families who need support against drug abuse. The Victory’s Light Drug Support Group in Belhar wants the community to know that they are there to support them. Started in 2009 it meets at the Baptist Church in Alabama Road on Mondays from 19:00 and is not just for recovering addicts, but also for families affected by drug abuse, and users who want to change their lives. Elmari Daniels, one of the founders of the group, said that she started the group when she realised that her daughter had a drug problem. “It was while looking for help for her that I realised that where were very little resources in our community, and there were many other parents like me who needed

Feel the beat in Blikkisdorp & raise funds

Listeners to a local radio programme will be bopping to beats for Blikkiesdorp next week. It’s all coming together at The Jolly Carp venue in Retreat on Saturday June 8 when listeners of The Jazzy Jive show on Fine Music Radio (101.3FM, Saturdays from 22:00 to 1:00) get together to raise funds for the playground and resource centre at the temporary relocation area near Delft. Lydia Martin explained that the influence of the worldwide web and Facebook had a big part to play in getting this gig going. “Gary van Dyk, also a reporter at TygerBurger, first presented this show on CapeTalk, but since the beginning of the year it has moved to FMR,” she explained. “Over the last few years he has built up a huge listenership, not just locally but also overseas where ex-pats started tuning in via streaming. “One of them, Beryl Segers from Sydney, Australia, then started following his reports in the paper and read the story about the needs in Blikkiesdorp. “She immediately felt that she wanted to do something and started raising funds for the Blikkiesdorp for Hope Foundation in Australia. “When she announced on Facebook that she was planning a trip here to hand over her contributions we felt that as a listeners’

Free workshop on legal issues open for a week

“What better idea than to have a lekker gathering of listeners to meet each other, and raise money for a good cause.” Beryl Segers was very excited about the gig, and very happy that the listeners were joining her helping the project in Blikkiesdorp. “I started listening to the show by accident, and all the while I was being introduced to lots of music from my youth, and it always brings me back home,” she said. “In the listeners’ group I also got to meet people who shared this love for music, and every week we have a virtual gathering as the music plays. “This gathering will prove that good music brings some great people together.” The Beat for Blikkiesdorp is taking place at The Jolly Carp on Saturday 8 June, from 19:30. Music will be provided by some top acts around town who have offered their services to the fundraiser. Pianist Ramon Alexander will be there with his band and guest artists include vocalist Heinrich Frans, guitarists Derrick Schippers as well as Richard Caesar. V Tickets for the gig are R100, and you can bring your own platter and refreshments. Further information available from Lydia on 073 229 3184 or Jenny on 082 534 3118. The Legal Independent People’s Corporation (LIPCO) has decided to take the law to the people with the launch of Legal People’s Workshops. From 27 May, South Africans will receive free workshops to help with any legal questions. “Getting to understand how you are protected legally at your work place, in your marriage, as a citizen, etc. is perceived as complicated and expensive and that’s why LIPCO has decided to hold the workshops,” said Simone Steinmair from LIPCO. She believes the fact that experts warn that strikes will eventually lead to fewer entrepreneurs, fewer jobs, less investment by foreign investors, and an overall worse-off economy is not enough reason not to strike. A workshop will be held on Saturday 1 June between 09:00 and 13:00 at the banquet hall at the Bellville Civic Centre in Voortrekker Street. Ashley Solomon, planning manager in the company’s Kids’ Division, explained that it was all part of the company’s aims to pride themselves as being a retailer who gives back to their customers. “Our planning and buying teams have combined resources and quite a few communities have been earmarked for CSI initiatives this year,” he said. “In the past few weeks we have specifically contributed to the following three projects: Tygerberg Children’s Hospital, Eurecon Primary School in Eureka Estate, and St Joseph’s home for the Chronically Ill in Montana.” “At Tygerberg Children’s hospital our contribution went to decorating the walls of the ground floor to provide a child-friendly environment, which is therapeutic and would contribute to the provision of good quality service to the young patients and their parents.” “Bedding and clothing for the children were also part of the donations made to the hospital.” At Eurecon Primary School there was a buzz of excitement as their teams got busy

care, rehabilitation in the form of physiotherapy and occupational therapy. “On Friday 17 May we took a team of about 60 dynamos from Pep to spend the day creating a little garden for the girls’ section as well as donating two six-seater table benches where they can spend time after school, either doing homework or spending time with their friends.” “This was all done while we were able to do a little braai for the kids and could share something to eat with them. We will continue to give back to our customers and communities who have supported our company for so many years,” he concluded.

Cultural activity flows in Ravensmead GARY VAN DYK Community cultural activity is flowing from The Fountain Centre in Ravensmead. The church is planning a unique community arts development initiative in the centre and they already have programmes in place for the residents. They have now embarked on a further initiative to invite qualified art trainers, experienced performing and visual artists, or students needing practical experience to offer their services voluntarily in training the participants in their projects. Some volunteers are already busy with various activities but they need more to cater for the needs of so many youth in the community. They are also inviting more children and youth in the area to enrol for the various activities that are on offer. Enrol on Saturday at an open day event from 11:00. This is also an invitation for children to join up with the first Ravensmead Community Junior Choir practise under the leadership of community workers Benny and Elicia Farao. The Fountain Centre is in the shopping complex on the corner of Northway Road and De La Rey Road. V For more information about choir call Rochelle on 073 714 2685 or 021 933 5216. Junior Council meets Senior Council

will be hosting their concert at The Range Primary School in Epping Forest. Tickets are R10, which also gets you a packet of crisps. They are also still open for new members to join them. V Further information from 073 240 0857 or email thirddaycommunity choir1@yahoo.com.

Kelsey Williams, a member of the Junior City Council and a learner at Elsies River High School visited the Subcouncil 4 monthly meeting on Thursday 23 May, as part of the awareness campaign on the Own, Love and Improve your Street initiative. With her in the photo is Subcouncil 4 chairman Clive Justus and (right) ward councillor Chris Jordaan.

Enjoy a musical extravaganza Get ready for some great music on Sunday. The Elsies River and District Xmas Bands Union will be hosting a Musical Extravaganza in collaboration with The Camillo

Lombard Collective. It will be taking place on Sunday 2 June at the Bellville Auditorium. The music starts at 19:00 and tickets are R50. V Contact Llewellyn on 083 453 1314.

Police finally identify corpse A breakthrough has been made regarding the unknown body of a female, who was set alight and dumped earlier in May this year. Mfuleni police were notified of the body discovered in the bushes of Brentwood Park, which was that of an unknown female. Along with the assistance of the community, a male was taken in for questioning and admitted to the offence, leading the police to the arrest of a second suspect. The two suspects, 19 and 34 years old, were arrested on 14 May and were charged with murder, for

which they have appeared for a bail application at the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court, on 23 May. The case was postponed to June and the suspects will remain in custody. According to a confession by one of the suspects, two more suspects are still at large. The victim is known to be 26-yearold, Yvette Neel who was picked up in Wesbank, the place where she was said to be staying with her boyfriend. Yvette was apparently transported to Kuils River, where she was

shot and later set alight in Brentwood Park. “The breakthrough by police in identifying her, came through the Forensic Department, whereby her fingerprints were lifted and checked,” spokesperson for the Mfuleni police, Captain Nomathemba Muavha, confirmed. Her personal details were made known, as she had previous cases pending against her, Muavha explained. Her death was only made known to her parents in Belhar on Thursday 23 May.

TYGERBURGER | RAVENSMEAD & BELHAR Woensdag, 29 Mei 2013

Eastern Rovers unyielding THOMAS CAROLUS Eastern Rovers come up against a confident Blue Downs Spurs side, all of who are in fine form at the moment. But coach Cyril Josephs said he is confident going into the anticipated Northern Suburbs Football Association Super League Knock-out clash at Symphony Park on Saturday. “We are not stressing about our opponent’s current form, but rather on how to walk away victorious in that match in order to advance to the next round of the competition,” says Josephs. “The other thing is that we are also really hungry for silverware. It’s amazing what winning does for a squad and for us it would restore the belief amongst the players going forward.” “First of all, as a club, as players and as the coach, we cannot be happy with this situation because we lost five league games so far this season. If you analyse these matches you will see we made a lot of unnecessary mistakes that cost us games and points. “I understand the frustration of the supporters because they want to see a winning

team, but as the coach I believe in the current group of players and we will keep fighting to get out of the slump.” The side started the new season brightly, ensuring they got out of the relegation zone. But now the boys in green and white want to make up for this. To the man, they believe they owe it to the supporters who have stood by them through difficult times the first nines games of the season. Coach Josephs has been trying out different combinations, some of which were forced through injuries or suspensions. He believes the team is not quite where he wants it to be, but has seen positives in the performance of the boys. He has given most of the players a run, and now the task is to find that winning streak, the click that will bring the side together and make them into a hard-playing unit. Fans have been urging the team to go out and fight, and are still confident that the coach is on the right track to getting Eastern Rovers back to where they belong, at the top. “This cup is very important because we know what it would mean to the supporters and the club as a whole if we win it.”

Top three: Around 200 competitors competed at the recent Western Province Kyokushin

championships held in Bellville. Some 10 of Sensei Gavin Smith’s students competed and had first, second and third place wrapped up. They all qualified for the national champion ship on 10 August in Durban. Front from left: Jaydin Reid (kumite) and Kelsey Makondo (kumite). Middle: Marvin Van Rooyen (kumite), Logan Minnaar (kumite and kata), Jayden Isaacs (kumite) and Sensei Gavin Smith. Back: Celine Jacobs (kumite) and Nadine Harrison (kumite).

New kit: Bellville Rugby Club from Bellville South are in the driving seat after a welcome

donation of kit from Barloworld Toyota in Tyger Valley. The team, who play in the 1A League of the Western Province Rugby Union, received a donation of jerseys for their first team from new car sales manager Heidi Tolman, and Marie Knoetze, business manager at the company. Celebrating in front are, from left, captain Elvernel Julius, and vicecaptain Regan Petersen. With them are chairman Roger Hendricks and Kenny Paarwater of the coaching staff. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Topstoeiers: Die

iaan Smit is currently ranked 6th on the IAAF world ranking for 110 m hurdles (youth) – his third consecutive year in the top 10. Tiaan is the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month winner. His extraordinary and successful career dates back nine years ago when he met his coach, Marcel Otto. The two has been together ever since. “I really couldn’t have asked for a better coach. In the nine years we’ve built a solid relationship and he knows how to get the best out of me. He surely deserves a lot of credit. If it wasn’t for him, I doubt that I would be where I am today.” said Tiaan.

Right track Back in 2011 when he still competed in the youth division he was ranked second on the IAAF rankings and last year fourth. This year however, it’s his first year competing as a junior and lying sixth on the log indicates that he is on the right track seeing as he has the whole of next year as well to climb the ranks. “It takes a massive amount of hard work and dedication. We are talking six days a week preparing for competitions and five days in the off-season. “It involves everything from heavy weight training in the gym to explosive power exercises to stamina and endurance training to stay in top physical shape.” With the Africa Junior Championships in Germiston looming, he has his one goal in mind – beating his current Africa junior record of 13.51 seconds. “I’m going to give it my best shot. But I think it might be tricky given the cold winter conditions.”

Tiaan Smit Olympics This is his immediate goal. For the future the Olympics is definitely on the cards. Furthermore he would also like to qualify for the World Junior Championships taking place in America next year. Tiaan walks away with a pair of sunglasses sponsored by Bosman, McNulty and Du Toit Optometrists. A chance to play for Grace Grace College (USA) is visiting South Africa as part of an experience for their soccer team, which plays in the highly rated American College League to do soccer coaching with kids in the townships. They also have the intention of scouting for potential players who could study at Grace in America for free and any degree of their choice on a sport scholarship in exchange for playing soccer for the college in the league which is just below the MLS where David Beckham played his soccer. Since their arrival last Monday, the team have visited Gardenia Primary and Excelsior High Schools in Belhar sharing with the learners about reaching for your dreams and also demonstrating some of their amazing skills with the soccer ball. They have also visited Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, Khayelitsha and Belhar. They took the Belhar Spurs juniors for

coaching on Tuesday and Thursday. Most of their work was done in and around Belhar because of their link with Breakthrough Christian Church, a vibrant community based church. The church partnered with Belhar Spurs FC to stage the international match between Grace College and Belhar Spurs u-23. It was a glamorous affair with many dignitaries. The match itself was a cracker, played in front of a packed stand with Grace scoring a spectacular first minute goal by Steven Femer with a left foot bend into the far corner. The second goal from Grace came from their Serbian player Nikoli Kranzic with an easy tap in after some good interplay down the right flank. Grace was awarded a penalty in the second half but the penalty was superbly saved by Matthew Japhta. The third goal was scored in the second half and Grace College won the match 3-0.
