Stealing the show All dressed up: The Elsies River and District hosted their annual competition at the Florida Park Sports Ground in Ravens mead on Sunday. While it was serious business in most of the categories the Tiny Tots section is about getting the chance to dress up for their participation in the March Pass. These two, Tylar Swartz and Channing Valentine. from the Star of Glad Tidings band were firm favourites with the crowd. More pictures and story on page 2, also at www.tygerburger.co.za. uthorities on a provincial and local level are taking the recent increase in gang-related violence seriously with new initiatives to tackle the problem. Dan Plato, Western Cape Minister of Community Safety, is stepping up the fight for safe communities by taking to the streets to visit areas that have been the hardest hit by violence in recent weeks. Speaking to the community at Karino

Court in Clarke Estate, Elsies River last week, he spoke passionately about his concerns with the latest incidents of shootings, mostly drug related, that have seen a number of killings since the start of this year. By the end of last week 17 people had died in shooting incidents across the peninsula, but he pointed out that shootings were being reported every day. He added that he wanted to start this safety campaign in these areas because apart from the killing there were also incidents of

innocent bystanders coming under fire.

Shot Grade 1 learner, Jermaine Taylor, was shot in his hand on his way to school at the start of the new school year last week when a gunman opened fire in the area. “Everybody is complaining about this situation, some of you are blaming the police, but our police can’t be everywhere all the time. These criminals watch where they patrol, wait till they pass and then go on with their activities.

“I have spoken to many communities about the role that they can play in helping the police fight crime in their neighbourhoods and we are serious about it. “The law-abiding citizens are in the majority but are allowing the criminal element to take over their lives.” Plato also emphasized the need for parents to become serious about keeping their children away from drugs and crime. “Parents, you must be aware of what your children are up to...” V To page 2.

FROM PAGE 1 “You must not be scared to take action, if you suspect drug use, take action early. You are the ones who become aware that your children are bringing guns into your house, and remember if that gun is used to kill somebody, you must also feel guilty. So take action to prevent this from happening.” Plato was also passionate about the need from government to increase their resources when it came to fighting drug use through rehabilitation. “While this problem is growing we need more centres to help those who want to be rehabilitated. My office recently tried assisting a family in need, and there was no place at any of the local facilities. “That shows you how big this problem has become.” Another major initiative has also started with the city’s mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith pointing out that the upsurge in gang violence across

Cape Town is an issue that requires urgent intervention.

Conviction rate “It is not within the City of Cape Town’s mandate to handle crime prevention and gang-related violence. This is exclusively a (police) competency, but statistics acquired from the SAPS and the Ministry of Justice point to a conviction rate for gang violence that is very low,” he said. “As part of this administration’s commitment to building a safe city, we have continued to go beyond our mandate and find innovative solutions to deal with this scourge and to assist the SAPS as far as our resources allow.” He pointed out that the efforts of the city and the Western Cape government to secure appropriate intervention are well-documented, as is the response from national

www.tygerburger.co.za

government. “Our attempts to discuss the latest upsurge in gang violence with senior Western Cape SAPS management officials have come to nought. “If the (police) have any planned interventions, the city is not aware of them. It is, however, clear that we cannot sit idly by while the situation continues to go unchecked.”

Punch A week ago the city’s Metro police department launched “Operation Punch”. In the space of six days, officers carried out numerous search and seizure operations, resulting in 56 arrests and the confiscation of more than 700 units of narcotics, two firearms, and over R20 000 in cash. “One of the suspects who was arrested is a SAPS detective who now faces charges of possession and dealing in illegal narcotics, possession of an unlicensed firearm and am-

Questioning The three suspects fled the scene. Subsequent to the incident police have taken three suspects in for questioning and retrieved six spent cartridges on the scene. The suspects were charged and appeared in Bellville Magistrate’s Court. In another incident that happened on Saturday at 02:40 a 37-year-old female and her 40-year-old boyfriend were returning home from a dance when they were accosted by three armed suspects in Batavia Street Belhar. During this robbery the suspects assaulted the boyfriend by hitting him over the head with a gun. They then attempted to rob another two men, but were surprised when their victims pulled out their own guns and started firing at them. None of the robbers was hit but in the ensuing crossfire the 37-year-old woman, Amanda Serfontein, was hit in the stomach. She was eventually stabilised at the scene and transported to Tygerberg Hospital where she is in a stable condition. The suspects fled the scene on foot. Police recovered eight spent cartridges at the scene of the incident. V Contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Christopher Kleinsmith on 021 953 8100, 084 441 1137.

Police make dent in drug trade GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

The battle against drugs in Delft continues as police made another big bust in the area. Last week police swooped on drug dens in the area and managed to confiscate illegal drugs that included three 200 litre drums filled with dagga. “We are consistently addressing crime operations through stop and search operations as well as through swooping on drug outlets and making a dent in the drug trade,” said Colonel Basil Vallai, acting station commander at Delft. He praised his officers for their concerted efforts and policing strategies employed in

operations last week. These operations included searching several outlets where the major haul was the 150kg of dagga in the three drums. Police also seized quantities of tik, mandrax, as well as alcohol from an illegal shebeen. According to Vallai a 45-year-old female has been arrested for the huge dagga bust. He also said that the estimated street value of the drugs seized is more than R200 000 and 22 suspects will appear in court soon on charges of drug possession. “I want to assure the public that Delft SAPS is dedicated to policing the scourge of drugs in Delft and further operations of this nature will be carried out consistently.”

Junior soccer fest takes CHAN form It was all about putting the ball in the back of the opponent’s net for 16 five-a-side junior soccer teams from Bonteheuwel on Friday 24 January. Each team represented one of the participating nations in the Orange African Nations Championship (CHAN) currently being played in South Africa. The junior soccer festival was hosted by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) to mobilise community interest in CHAN 2014. Golden Gate (representing Libya) was crowned the winner of the under-13 and under-15 events in Bonteheuwel. DCAS has been encouraging communities in the Cape metropole to “adopt a nation” for CHAN. Thousands of spectators have been given complimentary tickets and free transport to watch the action live at the Cape Town and Athlone Stadia.

The Bonteheuwel soccer festival brought players and spectators together; it was fun; it was filled with action; and it promoted the development of players at grassroots level. Player of the Tournament Shahiem Solomons (12) of Golden Gate, who loves soccer so much that he could play it every day, said he and his team-mates enjoyed playing against other teams from his community. “We appreciate opportunities such as this festival where we can show spectators what we can do on the field and to have fun doing it.” Colin Cedras of DCAS Club Development added that the festival reached out to a community that loves the beautiful game. “Players competed in good spirit, and the games brought people together to develop junior soccer and to watch the CHAN 2014 matches in Cape Town,” he said.

This is the Golden Gate team who represented Libya – they won the competition on Friday.

Emo Adams

Talented Emo Adams headlines Tygerfest The very popular Emo Adams, a multi-talented marvel of crooning and comedy alike, will perform on Saturday 22 February at the Tygerfest. The Greater Tygerberg Partnership’s first ever Tygerfest will take place at Parow High on 21 and 22 February. Although Emo will be the highlight of the Saturday programme, the rest of the day will be filled to the brim with local talented performers. Emo was born and raised in the heart of the Cape Flats in Mitchells Plain. He is the youngest of three boys. His childhood years were filled with harmonies and song; an infectious influence by his musically-inclined father and talented elder brother, fellow actor Luqmaan Adams. “We believe there is so much to be proud of in the Greater Tygerberg region, and Emo is a prime example of the world-class local talent we are very happy to support,” says Tienie le Roux, executive director of the Partnership. Hero saves young girl from raging inferno GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Bellville South has a hero in Johannes Bowman, who risked his life to save the life of a toddler from an inferno. While three families lost everything in the fire that destroyed wendy houses in Cupidos Street, last Thursday there is relief and gratitude for the actions of Johannes that a young life was not lost. Nigel Gasment, father of 3-year-old Kim, is thankful that his friend Johannes was at home at the time of the fire, and risked his life to check if anybody was caught in the blaze. He explained that the cause of the fire was not yet known, but it occurred when his wife left to fetch their other children from school. The humble hero wanted no praise, he was just thankful that he could save a young life. He said that he was at home in the main house on which the structures were situated when he noticed something was wrong. “I went to make me some tea and when I looked out of the window I saw the smoke in the yard. “At first I thought that it was the neighbours making a fire to burn copper wires,

but they were not at their normal place. That’s when I saw that the smoke was coming from the wendy house. “I knew that that was the time that they normally went to fetch the children but I rushed out just to check. “I opened the door and went into the room where I saw the girl on the bed, I just picked her up and ran for safety.” Neighbours had alerted the emergency services by this time but the flames quickly engulfed the buildings. “We’ve lost everything,” said Andre Minnies, whose family was also affected by the fire. “All we have is the clothes that we were wearing but people are beginning to help us, and as you can see we are getting help to put up new structures.” Lomi Witbooi is one of those coordinating some assistance for the families and feels that the community can rally around to help them. “At a time like this we have to think of how we can help them,” she said. “We are calling on people who can assist in any way possible. These families are now in need of clothes for their children, appliances, and most importantly groceries so that they can eat at night.” V If you can help call Lomi on 071 011 1633.

Safety for scholars is the concern of the Bishop Lavis Scholar Transport Forum which is calling for the support of all in the business. Stephen Hector, secretary of the organisation said that apart from their concerns to maintain safety for their charges to and from school, they also want to help drivers stick to the law when it came to permits for their vehicles. “Should scholar drivers need help with permits they can contact us and we will assist them,” he said. “We are also part of a greater association called Cape Scholar Transport and we are

here to help not only the driver, but the parent where it comes to safety of the kids and let the parents understand we want to offer a much needed service with safety for their children.” He added that they came into existence in 2010 after the horrific incident at the railway crossing in Blackheath. “We don’t want something like that to happen again so we also want to make parents aware of what they have to look out for before they put their children in the hands of a stranger taking them to school. They can contact us if they have any issues of safety when it comes to the transport of their children,” he said. Cop among those bust for drugs The “law” was at the receiving end of, well, the long arm of the law last week when City of Cape Town Metro police officers arrested 15 suspects, including a South African Police Service detective, during operations in Harare and Delft. On Thursday 23 January, officers executed a search warrant at a house in the Hague, Delft and arrested nine suspects for possession and dealing in illegal narcotics. It was later found that one of the suspects is a South African Police Service detective.

Corruption He was charged for possession and dealing in illegal narcotics, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, being in possession of forensic bags with

narcotics, possession of an unlicensed vehicle, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice. Officers confiscated 121 packets of tik, 51 forensic bags containing narcotics, a 9mm Z88 firearm, and a box of documentation relating to forensic investigations. In Harare, the same team of officers assisted members of the South African Police Services with the arrest of a wanted suspect. The 32-year-old woman is also linked to a syndicate involved in theft and property-related crimes. During the operation, officers found more than a dozen mandrax tablets. The woman and five other suspects were arrested and charged with dealing in illegal narcotics.

HOOFARTIKEL

Nes jou “geliefde” taxi’s. Dit nogal by die skool. Sterkte. Phil, Plattekloof (Skuldbult) V I am so tired of seeing ignorant people with good intentions, taking puppies for walks or runs on hot tar! Religion can be deception too Recent media reports have identified a preacher who encourages his “flock” to eat grass. This absurdity suggests that some religious communities take their preachers far too seriously. Since I monitor religious programming on TV I am regularly intrigued by the disempowering agenda of some preachers. Even in some mosques I witness preachers who use their training to undermine the intellect of the overall congregation. I often consider if some preachers seek to privatise God and religion so that they alone are entitled to speak on his behalf. Like many politicians, in the case of service delivery, some preachers assume that salvation can only come via loyalty to them or the religious denomination that they represent. Ask any Muslim, Christian or Jewish preacher if they believe the other will enter heaven and watch the agony unfold. Spiritual terrorism implies that people are hoodwinked into believing that any manifestation of God – be it religious or otherwise – must first be approved by their specific preacher. With this action a preacher raises himself above the level of ordinary people and assumes unqualified powers. Ironically religious leaders of any sort are supposed to be valiant and humble by historic definition. For example, a shared reason for the prophetic mission of Moses, Jesus and Muhammed was to restore the original bond between God and his creation. Moses challenged Egypt’s Pharaoh, Jesus challenged the unjust practices of the Pharisees, and Muhammed

challenged the cruelty of his society. In my opinion, the primary purpose of any religion is to bring humans closer to God and any preacher or system of belief that teaches anything else is deception. If people follow a preacher who inspires them to eat grass, the problem is simple. The preacher is a charlatan and these people are senseless. Perhaps Mark Twain said it best: “Never argue with stupid people. They will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.” YAGYAH ADAMS Email

NEE VIR DIE KYK DAAR’S Durbanville

Dié ‘Kumars’ is regte kullers! MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

S

New life is coming from a community garden courtesy of New Life, a non-profit community organisation that operates in the Uitsig area. The organisation provides therapeutic and educational support to neglected and abused children and their families. Through its outreach programme, children are able to access quality mainstream education through community-based home schooling units that are run by trained volunteers.

Food supply According to Ronel Viljoen, PR councillor for the area, the food garden was built to enhance the community by offering fresh home-grown vegetables to the school near the facility, and as the garden expands the community will be able help in the garden and be “paid” by receiving vegetables. “A restaurant in Tyger Valley is also interested in buying vegetables from New Life,” says Viljoen. “We are also researching recipes in order to preserve some of the products for the winter months.”

The organisation identified the open area of land adjacent to its premises as a suitable location for the development of a food garden. “The whole aim of this project is to provide a nutritious food supply for use by its programme participants,” continues Viljoen. “In addition, the food garden will provide employment and subsistence to the maintenance workers who will be appointed to tend the garden.” Work on the food garden has commenced and has received ward allocation funding and a donation from New Life for covering the necessary cost of erecting a wall and fence to enclose the area. The subcouncil is working in cooperation with the Department of Social Development, which has agreed to fund the employment of two workers under the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) for the first two months. A third worker has volunteered his services and will assist with maintaining the facility. Compost, seedlings and training is also being provided by the Department of Social Development.

V Belangstellendes kan Juanita skakel by 082 782 0060 of Daleen by 021 919 2055.

TYGERBURGER Ravensmead & Belhar 15

Ouers trots oor Raven se prestasie RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

S

Soms was hulle al 05:00

Fresh look for karting season T

he 2014 Western Province motor racing year kicks off with a bang at the first round of the Cape karting championships at Killarney on Saturday and after what seems a short layoff, all is set for extreme action with new combinations, new equipment and several drivers shifting to new classes for the new season. Top of the bill will most likely be the open Senior Max Challenge 125cc class where the cream of Cape Town’s karting crop is set to come together for a bruising blockbuster battle at the front of what promises to be a most competitive class.

Titles Reigning SA and WP Max Challenge champion Luke Herring shifts to a new to SA RKT Kosmic chassis as he prepares to defend his local title against the past two

WP Junior Max champions, 2012 winner Eugene Deneyssen aboard a SAKRA TonyKart and 2013 Junior champ Jurie “Umpie” Swart’s Indy Oil Birel. Never discount Zanardi driver Julian van der Watt, super-privateer Hylton Pieters on mom’s CRG or TonyKart mounted Jono Aberdein and Stephen Wells in the Challenge class. With several drivers having graduated to the Challenge class for 2014, the 125cc high school Junior Max brigade takes on a fresh complexion this season, with 2013’s second, third and fourth placed drivers all looking for top honours this year. Henry Bam and Delano Fowler continue aboard their respective RKT and Suprocom Zanardis, while Kohen Bam shifts to a Kosmic chassis. Expect Makita TonyKart driver Joshua Dolinschek, the Suprocom

UWC rugby gets good start The University of the Western Cape rugby team started their Varsity Shield campaign on a high when they downed the University of Fort Hare 26-8 away in Alice on Monday, 27 January. The win powered FNB UWC to the summit of the log standings, on top of defending champions, the Central University of Technology, who narrowly beat the University of KwaZulu-Natal 26-25 at home in another match of the evening. The victory has put the University in good stead for their goal of winning the competition to gain promotion to the elite Varsity Cup next year. The game at the Davidson Rugby Stadium started off scrappy with UWC flyhalf Dale

van Schalkwyk putting the first kick-off of the match directly into touch and then FNB UFH Blues scrumhalf Bangihlombe Kobese knocking on from the resultant scrum. It was a trend that would ultimately persist for most of the match in tricky conditions. Once the nerves of both sides had settled down, UWC started dominating and made their early weight of possession count. UWC captain and man of the match Fredie Muller scored four penalties, while tries from Kenwin Wiener, James Verity-Amm and Jose Julies put the Bellville side in command. Van Schalkwyk made a conversion. UWC’s next game is against the Tshwane University of Technology at UWC Sports Stadium at 19:00 on Monday, 3 February.

and Designer Trims Zanardis of Isabella Fowler and Dino Stermin; Maxterino graduate Giordano Lupini’s La Vie de Luc CRG and Arrow driver Felix Fischer to be snapping at the top three’s heels.

Action The regular stars of the Cape karting show have to be the 60cc primary school Maxterinos and this year’s action should be even more explosive with most of the regulars returning alongside an excellent group of Cadet graduates. Double WP champion Dario Busi’s Automan TonyKart is clearly the kart to beat, but he will be under growing pressure from regular rivals JP Hamman, (Hammanshof Kosmic) a troop of Zanardis driven by Battery Energy driver Charl Visser, TurboTech duo Aidan Strydom and Jason Co-

etzee; Your Office lad Storm Lanfear and Liquid Blast CRG siblings Ike and Puck Klaasen. Expect the Zanardi-mounted former Cadet trio of 2013 champion Tate Bishop (TPB), 2012 champion Joseph Oelz (Clear) and Sebastian Swanepoel (KSD) to make a strong impression up front in Maxterino, while last year’s midfield runners, the likes of Tyler Croy (CRG), Kai van Zyl (Unlimited Auto Zanardi), Luke Drotschie (G&A CRG) and Thaqib Meyer (Farolink CRG) will be among those looking for improved form amid a packed primary school field this season. With most of last year’s rivals having moved on up to Maxterino, little Makita driver Troy Dolinschek has to start the TopKart-only 50cc junior primary school age baby Cadet class as favourite.

VASCO VS CHIPPA: 11 DRAW

Deadlocked at the top

THOMAS CAROLUS

V

asco Da Gama and Chippa United remain deadlocked at the top of the National First Division log after playing out to a 1-1 draw in an action-packed match at the Philippi Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The teams had gone into the match separated at the top of the table, only by goal difference, and that was the way it remained after an enthralling 90 minutes. Vasco Da Gama started the match with the confidence that six wins from seven games

brings to a team and were unlucky not to take a first half lead after hitting the bar twice. They then went on to go in front around 15 minutes into the second half through Jaabier Delport. But Chippa United were not going down without a fight and finally levelled matters 10 minutes from time, heaping constant pressure on the Vasco Da Gama defence before Sipho Mtule found the net. Vasco Da Gama coach Keenin Lesch said “despite the high stakes at play in Saturday’s derby game I was not getting overly worked up.”

He said it when the team were struggling for consistency earlier this season, and he’s saying it again now after a six match winning streak (followed by two draws) has seen his side draw level on points with Chippa United at the top of the table: there is no pressure and no expectancy at Vaco Da Gama. “I said it before, at Vasco Da Gama we are all about having fun and enjoying ourselves. I am very fortunate not to have any pressure from management and that translates to the players, said the 32-year-old former midfielder. “I’m still new at coaching, but so far the

philosophy is working for me; there is no need to overcomplicate things or put too much pressure on the players. “Its like a big family here, everyone plays for each other, and we just go out on the park to enjoy ourselves. If the goals come, they come, if they don’t they don’t, you can’t win every game, but you can have fun every time you play.” Milano United returned to the position they owned for most of the season, the top spot on the NFD log after a 2-0 win over Roses United at the Wynberg Military Sport Stadium.
