CITY ACTS: CLEAR BY 30 APRIL

House on Prairie going GARY VAN DYK

“G

ood riddance!” That is the overwhelming response from the community with the news that the sun will set on the famous “Little House on the Prairie”, a landmark shebeen, and in recent years drug den, on the corner of Stellenbosch Arterial and Modderdam Road, at the end of April. The good news for the community is that the city looks to transform it into a place of hope for the community, and a symbol of its victory over crime in the area. The Western Cape High Court recently granted a final eviction order against the residents of the property in Belhar. This is a significant victory in the City of Cape Town’s fight against drugs and drug dealing, and brings to an end an extended legal battle that began several years ago. The occupants must now vacate the property by

30 April. “The city has taken a tough stance against the gangsterism and illegal activities being conducted at this property,” said JP Smith, mayoral committee member for safety and security.

Drugs “The court’s ruling allows us to draw a line under almost a decade’s legal wrangling to expel the criminal gang activity and drugs from this city-owned property.” In dismissing the appeal against the eviction order the Western Cape High Court has found that the City of Cape Town followed due legal process at all stages, and that there was no reason why the eviction order could be denied. The Court stated that: V the city’s arguments that illegal activities had been conducted at the property were valid;

troosfontein on the opposite side of the premises was overjoyed that the matter had finally been resolved. “We have been fighting that place for years, and I am glad that the council has finally done something about it,” she said. “It used to be so bad because they used to go buy their drugs then come to smoke it here in the park. Our children were never safe and there used to be a lot of trouble. “I am glad that they are now going to use the property for good, because drugs is a big problem here.” Rodney Jooste, was relaxing with a few friends in the park on Sunday afternoon and admitted that he had mixed reactions to the closure. “For many of us growing up in the area it served its purpose while we were younger,” he said. “Unfortunately when drugs became big, many of us stopped going there because it was just too dangerous.”

V it would be manifestly unfair for the city to keep the appellants in the property for which they did not qualify in terms of the housing allocation process; V there is no evidence that there are children, elderly people or disabled people living at the premises; and V the city complied with the provisions of the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act. The Court dismissed the appeal against the eviction order, and ordered that the appellant cover the costs incurred by the city in defending its position. “The city is currently exploring a number of possibilities for the plot, including the establishment of a multi-purpose Safety and Security facility. It is envisioned that whatever the city creates there, will stand as a symbol of our victory over gang violence and drugs in the area,” said Smith. Rosie Ockers, who lives near a park in Ma-

Outrage at reduced sentence TANDYLEE MARINUS

“O

The saddest part is losing a child, but it is 10 times worse for a mother.” These are the words of Valerie Phillips, the mother of Jody Phillips (16), who lost his life on that fateful day more than two years ago when 10 children died at the Buttskop railway crossing in Blackheath. Valerie was very emotional following the the decision by the Supreme Court to reduce the sentence of her child’s killer She wasn’t the only one to question the reduced sentence of taxi driver Jacob Humphreys (65). Carlisle respected the judgement but emphasised that it was not condusive in preventing the reckless and irresponsible behaviour which is still experienced on our roads. “The decision to reduce the sentence and convictions is very disappointing as it shows that the highest courts have yet to fully understand the need for consequences as a deterrent to dangerous behaviour we see on roads, as well as a tool to ending road carnage,” said Carlisle.

This speed bump in 42nd avenue, Eureka was a huge problem, it was not very visible and the warning signs on the pavement had been stolen. Cars used the sidewalk to miss the speed bump and that was a big risk to pedestrians. Proportional Representative councillor for the area, Ronel Viljoen, reported the matter because she was concerned about the safety of residents in the area.

‘Nowhere people’ home GARY VAN DYK The “Nowhere” people now have a place of their own. A journey from homelessness in 2006 has finally come to an end for about 100 families from Ravensmead as they celebrated their own homes in Happy Valley on Human Rights Day last week. Johannes Bastiaan was part of the Ravensmead Anti-Autocratic Civic Organisation that stood by these families who explained how, and when it all started in the first place. “In October 2006 these families were dubbed The Nowhere People by the media after they were focibly removed from a vacant school where they had been living for more than a year.

“They then sought refuge in the civic centre but once again they were put out there and taken to police cells in Ravensmead. “Eventually they were moved to a big tent in Northway Street, but a petition from the local residents saw them having to move again. “This led to the move to Happy Valley, and thankfully after many years they have their own places,” he said. Bastiaan added that the celebration last week was to bless the homes and families, as well as to show their support for the community there.

Nuwe straatname is ’n turksvy vir baie ROWENA HENDRICKS

D

“Ek is nou bietjie meer as ’n jaar hier.

azine and five rounds and also arrested the highflyer’s 24-year-old brother. The firearm had its serial number filed off. In the last incident police officers seized a legal firearm from its owner after his wife alleged threatening conduct. The suspects face charges for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and will appear in court soon and both legal firearm owners will have to face a Section 102 enquiry and give reasons why they should not be declared unfit to possess firearms and ammunition. The Firearms and Ammunitions Act makes provision, and legal owners must be aware that a Section 102 hearing will be held, their firearms seized, should a protection order be granted by a competent court or any allegation surface of domestic violence or other such abuse on the part of the firearm owner. The enquiry has the power and could determine and declare the owner unfit. Brigadier Jansen requested that all firearm owners act responsibly when in possession of their firearms and they have a responsibility to safeguard and secure their firearms.

Police in Delft are determined to rid the streets of guns. “We are dedicated to rid society of illegal firearms and we will monitor irresponsible behaviour from legal firearm owners.” This statement was made by Brig Hendrik Jansen, station commander of Delft on parade after they seized several firearms in an operations this weekend. According to Jansen his staff seized three firearms and some ammunition. In the first incident a 24-year-old suspect was arrested and an illegal Norinco gun seized during a patrol and search operation conducted in Delft South. When another 21-year-old youth came to enquire about the suspect arrested for the firearm, police searched him and recovered one magazine with nine rounds. The owner of the gun had not reported it stolen and upon enquiry he alleged that he was not even aware that it was stolen. In another incident, armed with a search warrant, police executed an operation at a well-known highflyer’s residence, where they recovered a 9mm Barreta with one mag-

of Local Government hosted a safety and awareness programme for children at the Rosendal Primary School in Delft. With the Easter Holidays happening the event was also to make people aware of maintaining the safety of their children and reduce the incidents of child abandonment in the area when parents just leave their children alone to go partying. They also handed out Easter eggs and goodie bags to the children who may never have received such gifts before. Life skills and HIV support GARY VAN DYK A special sponsorship exists in training youths to tackle HIV/Aids in their communities. Mylan is a global pharmaceutical company supplying anti-retroviral (ARV) medication to communities. When their cycling team was in town recently to take part in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, their focus was on far more than two wheels and a long road. The team met up with the 27 youths Mylan has sponsored to become peer-to-peer counsellors with the NGO Youth At Risk, based at the Delft police station. The company is backing up its entry to the communities with a youth awareness

campaign that will see these 27 youngsters being trained to share life skills and experiences with other at-risk young people in the area. These participants will discuss issues that include HIV and behaviours around it, drugs, abuse and other matters that affect their communities on a daily basis. Gary Bonney, Director of AfriSIDA and programme manager of one2many and EnoughIsEnough, says that empowering these youths to advocate physical and mental wellness, as well as healthier behaviours, among their peers will include social activities like swimming, karate and other events that draw youngsters together and offer opportunities to build confidence while educating each other.

Very long walk for the animals DESIREÉ RORKE “Not once on our long journey did we come across an aggressive animal. We’ve fallen into swamps, crawled through boomslang infested forests, walked through game reserves and over farmlands and never did one animal harm us or did we feel threatened by them. I wish the same could be said about the people we encountered along the way,” says Terrence Olivier. Terrence (53) from Amanzimtoti and Jimmy Collins, his 70-year-old intrepid walking buddy from Johannesburg, arrived in Cape Town last Wednesday after a gruelling 2 000 km walk from Amanzimtoti, to raise funds for several animal charities across the country. Together they are known as the Rainbow Warriors and literally went a long way to raise awareness for this cause. One of the 24 charities they supported is the Cape Town based Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre in Fisantekraal, with whom they met at a fundraising event on Thursday. The event, a scrumptious high-tea was hosted by Zomerlust Guest House in Paarl and attended by the centre’s volunteers, supporters and members of the community. The two intrepid warriors started their 70day journey in January when Terrence came to realise the urgency of the plight of animal charities. “Every day I hear of charities asking for financial help and the idea came to me to do this long walk. It would afford me the opportunity to raise funds and spread the message,” he says. At that that stage Jimmy, a family friend

came down from Johannesburg for a visit and decided to take up the challenge with Terrence. The two of them travelled through 70 towns and walked between 25 and 35 kilometres a day, every day. “Many days I got up and thought that I wasn’t going to make it and had to push myself, mentally and physically to get up and walk on,” says Jimmy while he shows off his walking shoes that had to be re-treaded twice along the way. One of the core ideologies of the message the warriors spread with their journey, is a simple one: cruelty against domestic animals can be prevented by education and sterilisation. Uitsig Animal Rescue Centre, currently has 500 animals living on their farm. Of these 300 dogs, 100 cats, chickens and horses, most have been abandoned or found stray and neglected in townships in and around Cape Town. “We try to find homes for these animals but many of them will not be adopted and stay with us until they die, as we by principle do not euthanise animals,” says Denay Saunders of the rescue centre while again emphasising the importance ofanimal sterilisation. “In one township we did a survey which showed that only three out of 189 of the dogs living there was sterilised. “Can you imagine how quickly the animal population in this township will grow out of control, with hundreds of these animals ending up in rescue centres like ours?” she asks. Visit their website at www.uitsig.org.za for more information.

Pure, textured: that’s my album LOUISA STEYL “My music is organic and pure, it’s from the heart,” says Can Skylark. And that’s why she decided on naming her debut album, Pure. Can Skylark describes her jazzy adult contemporary music as eclectic and organic. “It’s rich in timbre and texture,”’ she says. While she hasn’t officially launched Pure yet, her songs are already playing on radio stations like KFM 94.5 and her album is for sale online. Can says it was while doing drama at Milnerton High School that she discovered her love of music. “That’s how I got my wings for music,” she says. Her parents steered her in a more lucrative direction though and she studied and

worked as a graphic designer, while pursuing her music passions part time. She’s been involved in big musical-tributes shows, like Milestones to the Millennium that was on at The Roxy Review Bar recently and Rough Diamonds and Divas, which played at the Barnyard Theatre. Eventually, she was approached by a producer, who wanted to record her own original songs. “I’ve always had a yearning to do my own stuff,” Can admits. Being approached by a big name in the industry gave her the confidence boost she needed to give it a shot. “I can’t believe the response I’ve been getting,” she says. Can started working on Pure in 2007.

“It was a labour of love, really. I needed the album to speak for me.” Along with an impressive list of South African radio stations playing her work, Can’s music has also been playlisted on European stations. “It’s been doing quite well actually,” she says. She is also involved in community work and believes it’s important to give back to the people who support her. She helps with charity shows and mentoring young artists. “I believe in planting seeds,” she says. For now, Can Skylark is selling her album independently and it can be downloaded from iTunes or CDBaby. You can find direct links or more information about her at www.canskylark.com. V Can Skylark visited the Orange Couch to give readers a taste of her pure sound. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to watch the video.

City: please register your boreholes The city is encouraged by the response to boreholes and well-point registration drive. The city appeals to those with boreholes or well-points on their properties to register or re-register on its database, in the spirit of Water Month. The information obtained during the borehole/well-point registration process is required for statistical data purposes only and no charges are levied. There has been a steady increase in the number of boreholes and well-point registrations across the city – especially during March this year, which is also the city’s Water Month. Apart from information, owners will also receive a new borehole/well-point sign which must be prominently displayed on the boundary of the premises, upon registration. The effective use of boreholes and wellpoints for non-drinking purposes, such as irrigating gardens, reduces the demand on drinking water from the city’s water mains, and is therefore encouraged. “We would like to appeal to those who have these water resource applications on their premises to please register them with the city’s water and sanitation department at no charge. “As a Caring City, we recognise and applaud those who use alternative water sources for the responsible manner in which they address the water demand on their premises,” said the mayoral committee member for utility services, Ernest Sonnenberg. V To register or re-register the borehole(s) and/or well-point(s), contact Sylvia Nkubu on 021 400 9966 or Sylvia.Nkubu@capetown.gov.za or Nozibele Nopikela on 021 400 9964 or Nozibele.Nopikela@capetown.gov.za. V Visit the City’s Keep Saving Water website at www.capetown.gov.za/keepsavingwater for further information about water conservation and responsible water use.

This city works for skaters too A skateboarding task team was formed by the City of Cape Town to cater for the need of skateboarders around the city. According to Brett Herron, mayco member for transport, roads and stormwater, the task team wants to open the channels of communication between affected parties to solve mutual issues. “In doing so we want to develop a comprehensive strategy to ensure the integration of skateboarding as a mode of transport and a form of recreation.” He says this strategy will consist of the identification of skating facilities and the infrastructure requirements of skating within the city, the formulation of a mutually agreeable policy for the regulation of skateboarding, and the implementation of practical steps that accommodate the needs of both skaters and the general public. “It is with great optimism that I greet the formation of this task team. “I believe that this forum gives us every chance of finding common ground between the city, skateboarders and the non-skateboarding public,” Herron said. Marco Morgan, speaking on behalf of the National Skate Collective, has welcomed the positive approach taken by the city in this regard. Meetings will be scheduled monthly.

Is it SuperSport Utd’s day? THOMAS CAROLUS SuperSport United are always mentioned as dark horses when the Metropolitan Premier Cup show rolls around every year, could this be their year again? They have proved to be a tough side to beat over the years, but are not good travellers. Having played in six tournaments so far they have only managed to win one. This year the Metropolitian Cup presents them with another chance to disprove this theory. Erica Park, Belhar will once again play host to the Metropolitan under-19 Premier Cup, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary. The event that takes place from 27 March to 1 April, will see 32 teams from across South Africa compete over six days, culminating in a nail-biting final on Easter Monday. This tournament has been the competition where SuperSport United have faltered most.

They play in Group F along with Vasco Da Gama, Cape Town All Stars, and Umgunglundlovu FC. This group is extremely open with Vasco Da Gama favourites to top the standings. If ever Vasco Da Gama had a chance of progressing through the tournament it will be this year. Cape Town All Stars do not appear to be the force they once were and Umgunglundlovu FC could be outgunned on the soft fields at Erica Park. Vasco Da Gama are blessed with natural talent in their midfield. With a game plan revolving around big men grinding up in conditions suited to it and a coach who knows how to preach the message, the Parow side are capable of upsetting one of the more fancied teams. Mamelodi Sundowns have contested the last three years leaving their unique mark on each of those tournaments as tough, uncompromising opposition. Sundowns’ sorties to the tournament are always sure to throw up a few surprises,

none more so than in 2009 when they beat Moroka Swallows 1-0 in the final. For teams in Pool H with Segra Football Acadamy, Old Mutual and ASD Cape Town, a place in the semi-final of this year’s event is hardly assured. It is possibly one of the weaker groups in the competition given ASD Cape Town’s poor form recently. Old Mutual Academy are the potential whipping boys of the group and should pose little threat to any of the teams, or to the score-board operators for that matter. The hardships of playing the game as amateurs will perhaps bond the side with an adhesive spirit, but the more professional approach of the opposition, Old Mutual included should see ASD Cape Town eliminated after the first phase. Bothasig can give RC Athletico FC and Transnet School of Excellence a good run, and if Chippa United, last year’s winners, don’t take them seriously they will get a surprise. One can’t imagine Chippa United, even on

an off day, losing to Bothasig and RC Athletico FC are likely to run the School boys ragged. Chippa United have very little flair but they have the brawn and experience to easily cope with a side as limited as Bothasig. Group A: Chippa United, Transnet School of Excellence, RC Athletico, Bothasig. Group B: Bayhill United, Milano United, Stars of Africa, Berea Albion. Group C: TUKS, Santos, Evertonians, Masidlale. Group D: Bidvest Wits, Swallows, Blue Down Spurs, Immortals Sports Academy. Group E: Ajax Cape Town, Harmony Academy, Atlantis Leeds, Belhar Spurs. Group F: SuperSport United, Vasco Da Gama, Cape Town AlL Stars, Umgunglundlovu FC. Group G: Kaizer Chiefs, Morgenster United, Mpumalanga Black Aces, Hanover Park. Group H: Mamelodi Sundowns, Segra Football Academy, Old Mutual Academy, ASD Cape Town.

Stokes’ sights on National Motocross title Local motocross rider Dylan Stokes, who won the 125cc class at the Cape Town National Club Championship at the Melkbos Motocross Track on 16 March, intends to make the title his own at the South African National Motocross Championship that will be held at the same venue this coming weekend. The 16-year-old Kenridge resident is putting in the work necessary to pull it off. Aside from two hours in the gym every day and rides at the track three times a week, he does muaythai, runs and cycles. On race day, he prepares by walking the track, listening to music and discussing strategy with coach Dean Hoffman. It’s clear that the preparation pays off. At the Dirt Bronco National near Krugersdorp this year, he had a good first and second heat, then suffered some bad luck when his gear shifter snapped off in the third heat – but he still managed to tie in second place for the day. Stokes, who attends Fairmont High School in Durbanville, has ambitions beyond South Africa’s borders too. “I’d love to have the opportunity to go overseas and participate in a few races. If I could do a few races in America, the UK and Europe, that would be fantastic.” “Motocross isn’t easy,” says Stokes. “It takes hard work and determination to get the results you’re looking for.” Round 2 of the 2013 National Motocross Championship will be held at the Melkbos MX track near the R27 on Saturday and Sunday 30 and 31 March. A weekend pass costs R60; children under 13 get in free. Racing starts at 10:30 on Saturday and 08:00 on Sunday. CONSTANT PRESSURE: PAYS OFF

UWC earn their final T

he University of the Western Cape’s (FNB UWC) rugby team emphatically earned a spot in the final of the Varsity Shield tournament after they beat the University of Fort Hare (FNB UFH) 28-12, in Bellville on Monday. The visitors made their intentions clear in the third minute of the game when centre Lundi Ralarala went over with the first try of the game, which was converted by full back Khanyiso Komani to give their side an 8-0 lead. UWC applied constant pressure soon after which was rewarded when fullback Warrick Rhoda scored and a conversion by Frederick Muller made the score 8-8 after nine minutes.

Penalties An altercation on the field led to both sides losing players - UWC prop Kelvin de Bruyn and UFH No 8 Nkosikhona Nofuma.

In the dying minutes of the first half, UFH fullback scored two late penalties to give his side a 12-9 edge over UWC going into the break. In the second half UWC came back guns blazing, with eightman Heinrich Marcus scoring, and Muller converting. Muller soon added another two points through a penalty to give the home side a 1812 lead. Another penalty scored by Muller gave his team space to breathe thus making the score 20-12. UWC put the final nails in the coffin of their opponents when reserve Njabulo Ndlovu went over to score his first try of the match. Mullers conversion in the 76th minute made the final score 28-12. Peter de Villiers’ side will now play the final against CUT Ixias of the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein on Monday 1 April.

UWC No 8 Njabulo Ndlovu goes over the line for his side, during their 28-12 victory over UFH in Bellville last night.
