SIX IN HOSPITAL: COMMUNITY SPITTING MAD

Toxic dump kills child GARY VAN DYK

I

llegal dumpers have murdered a toddler in Delft! That is the feeling from the community after a three-year-old lost her life after playing with toxic waste that had been dumped in a field near houses in the N2 Gateway project. While Jordan Lewis lost her life, six other children had to be hospitalised after playing in the powdery white substance. The little girl was playing with a group of friends near a set of bags which had been illegally dumped on the road near her Delft home on the corner of Silversands and Symphony Way.

Death There were also reports that Jordan ate what appeared to be a sugary sweet substance which may have caused her death. The City’s disaster management spokes-

man, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes, said six other children were admitted to a hospital in Elsies River after being exposed to the chemicals on Sunday. Three policemen were also admitted to hospital after they inhaled the fumes when they responded to urgent calls from residents on Sunday. While police were still busy with investigations, members of the community were angry about illegal dumping and wanted the guilty parties brought to book. Gerald Foster from Belhar, said that in his work he has to travel through many areas on the Cape Flats and always noticed these illegal dumping sites on open fields. “I’ve always wondered what goes through these people’s minds when they do it,” he said. “Don’t they know that there are legal dumping sites provided by the City? Or are they just lazy and don’t care about their communities?

“Now a child is dead, others are in hospital, and a family is grieving because of their actions.

Trace culprits “I hope that the police can trace from where these chemicals came and put these despicable bastards in jail for life.” Sophie Stander, from Delft, was also very angry about the death that this dumping had caused. “Illegal dumping is a major problem in this area,” she said. “Too many areas here are without lights so you get these bakkies that come here late at night to dump their rubbish. “The council comes to clean up an area and a few days later they start dumping again. With this incident it shows that the dumping is not only making the area dirty, but now it has caused a death. “We as the community must stand together to find these dumpers and report them.”

Jordan Lewis lost her life after eating dumped chemicals.

Powerful partnerships will empower youth in the community. Unemployed youth in Bishop Lavis and surrounding communities can be proud because they will soon have access to their very own Computer Training and Life Skills Academy. This is an initiative of YoungPeople@Work, a group of dedicated and disciplined volunteers who provide support to the unemployed to access employment. The academy was launched on Saturday with the support of Pastor Graham Siebritz of Adonai Life Ministry who provided free training and office space and Metropolitan Health Group (MHG) who sponsored the computers. Frank Julie, the volunteer projects director of YoungPeople@Work, is excited about this new development and over the next few weeks he will be providing intensive training to about 10 volunteers to become competent computer trainers who will provide training at the academy. “We also plan to partner with community libraries where computer trainers will be de-

ployed and where basic computer literacy will also be offered,” he said. “Life skills training in personal development, leadership and management, money management, customer relations, project management, fundraising, office administration, bookkeeping, networking and professional job seeking skills will also be offered as part of a holistic approach to empower unemployed youth.” He also pointed out the organisation has recently entered into an agreement with Capacity Employment Agency and will therefore actively assist unemployed youth trained at the academy to secure employment. Enrolments will be open from June 2013. Pastor Graham Siebritz was also excited about the opening of the centre and felt that in this way the church was playing an active role in empowering youth in the area. “With partnerships like this we can provide these young people with the skills that can empower them to become positive forces for change in their neighbourhoods.” V For more information, please contact Shirley via SMS at 074 350 8582 or email youngpeo ple.za@gmail.com.

They’re looking for women who want to learn some skills in Bellville South. It is a new term at Bellville South Youth and Women Centre and the ladies of the Sewing for Business Classes are starting on their new modules. Joy Warries (projects co-ordinator at the centre) pointed out that spending time with the ladies in the workroom, one experiences the excitement of each participant as they listen to the instructions of their facilitators, Wareldia Brown (Introduction to Entrepreneurial Sewing) and Glynis Lambert (Garment Constructions). Warries is excited about the prospects of this new term. “The first term saw 16 ladies equipped in Mosaic Art, 21 ladies attended a Positive Communication Parenting Course and 15 ladies are enrolled in the Sewing for Business Courses,” she said. She also shared how some of the ladies are already building a business out of the Mosaic art skill that they have learned. “I want to extend an invitation to the community to visit the centre, where the handiwork of the ladies are for sale or where you can place an order. “The new term sees the start of the popular Fabric Painting Classes. “These classes are offered on Wednesdays starting from Wednesday 8 May for six weeks. “There is only space for 15 ladies to be equipped with this skill. Interested unemployed, vulnerable women, especially between the ages of 18 and 35 years are invited to enrol. Cape Town’s executive mayor, Patricia de Lille shows she is no beginner at golf.

Play on green at Blue Downs City of Cape Town executive mayor, Patricia de Lille, officially opened the newly-renovated Blue Downs Golf Driving Range on Saturday with a swing as smooth as can come. Her swing was, of course, not what the day was about, but rather the driving range and the new opportunities on the green and range for the local community. The driving range has been upgraded thanks to a partnership between the city’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department and the Blue Downs Golf Club. Construction of the Blue Downs Golf Driving Range started in late 2009. The latest renovations, including alterations to the clubhouse and facility equipment, mean that work is now complete – at a total cost of R1,8 million. The City-owned facility is managed by the

The sport of golf started to develop in the Blue Downs and Eerste River areas in 1994, when a small group of keen golfers earmarked a piece of land in order to develop golf and curb crime and drug abuse in the community. The Blue Downs Golf Driving Range aims to build trans-cultural relationships in the community by introducing golf to the youth, men, women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The intention is to teach the youth the values of sportsmanship and self-discipline and to produce worldclass golfers. V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za for more photos.

Girl gang violence on the rise GARY VAN DYK Girl gang violence is on the rise in Delft. According to Delft police, the latest incident occurred on Tuesday 16 April at Voorbrug Senior Secondary School. A group of girls started fighting with another group in the classroom over a dispute about an incident that happened out of school hours and not on school premises. The girls –aged 14, 15, 17 and 18 – were all members or aligned to the “Timber Barbies” gang grouping. It is alleged that a 14-year-old girl

and her group of friends (Timber Barbies) accosted the rival group led by a 15-year-old, in a classroom after which a fight ensued. According to witness’ statements the 14-year-old learner hit the 15year-old leaner in the face with her fists. A friend responded and retaliated by hitting the initial attacker several times over the head with the buckle of a leather belt. During the scuffle the 15-year-old produced a knife which was hidden in her school bag, and stabbed the younger girl several times in her chest and leg.

She sustained serious injuries to her right shoulder, upper thigh, and several open wounds to her forehead and her chest. Another learner, a 17-year-old was also stabbed in the right arm and another 18-year-old sustained a knife wound to her right upper thigh. The injured were rushed to Tygerberg Hospital and are in a serious condition. Delft police are investigating charges of assault (GBH) and a 15year-old has been arrested who claimed bullying as the reason for the attack.

Help Minter keep wolves away GARY VAN DYK There’s going to be some magical music at The Mercury Lounge next week when musos join forces to help one of their own. Gavin Minter is well-known on the local scene, not just as a musician but also as somebody who has a passion for promoting local sounds with a number of projects over the years. Earlier this year the sporty side of Minter saw him entering the Cape Argus Cycle Tour but an accident has left him with some injuries that puts him out of action for some time. It will be months till he picks up the saxophone again and a lot longer till he plays percussion, but already there is a den of wolves camping outside his door, so musicians are getting together to host the Feed The Pack concert on Tuesday 30 April. While this date celebrates International Jazz Day across the globe the musical menu for this event sees a variety of sounds to suit any taste. There are two venues at the lounge with jazz and blues being the musical order of the day. Starting at 19:30 the cream of the crop of local talent will be there to support Minter during his time of need because over the past 20 years he has created and provided so many of them with work in the entertainment business.

The night will feature many of South Africa’s top jazz and blues artists and include people like Arno Carstens, Albert Frost, Melanie Scholtz, Richard Ceasar, Rus Nerwich, Kevin Gibson, Natasha Meister, Gerald Clark, Schalk Joubert, Andrew Lilley, Tina Schouw, Amanda Tiffin, Kevin Floyd, Lee Gold, Doc John,Vicky Sampson, Lee Thomson, Alvin Dyers, Buddy Wells, Shawn Phillips, Bobby Minter and many more. Minimum donation at the door will be R150. Presale tickets available at webtickets: https://www.webtickets.co.za/event.aspx?itemid=404860567 Bothners have also donated a Fender Acoustic guitar as a give-away. V The Mercury is at 43 De Villiers Street, Zon nebloem. Further information from Des Kieswetter on 072 185 1230.

Empowered by sharing GARY VAN DYK Community empowerment is developing in Bishop Lavis. The Bishop Lavis Development Forum (BDF) was formed in last year and they’e inviting interested individuals and organisations from Bishop Lavis, Sydneyvale, Valhalla, Clarks Estate, Malawi Camp, Freedom Farm and Kalksteenfontein to attend a discussion on the role of communities in creating possibilities to address the challenges within these communities. Chairperson Quentin Newman said that the idea is to concentrate on the sharing of capacities and resources in communities. “We must discuss what we have in common to make a positive change in our neighbourhoods,” he said. “There must be an understanding that people’s positive attributes are more valuable than their deficiencies or needs, and that we are worth something, because we can contribute. “What we contribute, makes the community grow.” This meeting will take place on Saturday 27 April, in the school hall of the Bishop Lavis High School, from 09:00 to 12:00. At this meeting there will also be discussion among the various branches within the forum that will include Youth Development; Sports and Recreation; Arts and Culture; Education; Differently-Abled; Religious Fraternity; Health; Social Services; Media; Small Business; Formal Business; Transport and Justice (Lawyers), to discuss the resources gifts, within every sector, and how it can be developed and enhanced. Later this year they will be hosting a bigger event. Members of the Bishop Lavis community are kindly requested to attend this very important meeting, so that an inventory of resources can be drawn up and distributed amongst the community. V If you wish to attend the meeting contact Lionel Peters (secretary) on 073 975 7585 or Quentin Newman on 084 36 34 216.

Have say on city dev plan The draft of the 2013/2014 Integrated Development Plan (IDP) review is available at all subcouncil offices for comment until 2 May 2013. This review is the first review of the current term of office for the City of Cape Town and was approved for public comment at the end of March. The draft IDP is available at all subcouncil offices and municipal libraries, as part of the budget document. The IDP is the City of Cape Town’s fiveyear plan, that sets out the city’s strategic and budget priorities for the next five years. It specifies how the municipality will allocate resources and spend money. This is a plan for the entire city and not just for specific suburbs. “Because the needs identified in the IDP also shape the city’s budget, it is a very important document that affects every resident in one way or another,” according to a statement on the city’s website. It states the importance of public comments and input, as this will help the city identify residents’ priorities and decide how to meet those needs with the resources available. The five-year plan builds on the city’s current Have your say about the city’s fiveyear plan strengths, and concentrates on five strategic focus areas, which are: the opportunity city; the safe city; the caring city; the inclusive city and the the well-run city. Growsmart, win big cash The launch of the first round of competitions of the Growsmart Literacy Programme took place this past Saturday at Parow High School. The aim of the competition is to support the Western Cape Education Department’s strategy to improve literacy levels. The competition requires that Grades 4, 5 and 6 learners from 200 schools in four urban districts of the Cape Metropole spell, define and construct sentences using words selected from the Growsmart newspapers they receive. The winning school will receive improvements to their premises to the value of R250 000 and the winning learners will each receive assistance worth R20 000. the recent subcouncil meeting, adding that there is much excitement in the air in the build up to the launch in June. “We have been in contact with many groups who are eager to make this work,” he said. According to Twigg, all the wards in the subcouncil will be included in this league, even Brackenfell and ward councillor Marian Niewoudt will check for possible teams in her ward. Even the homeless and street children will be involved in an attempt to re-direct the direction of their lives. “This is our contribution towards keeping kids off the streets and to occupy them in times in which there is nothing to,” he said. Tournaments will be played at the various youth centres and community halls in Scottsdene, Wallacedene, Scottsville and Brackenfell. Says Twigg about the format of the league: “It will be five-a-side and we are going to try and get 20 teams, ages being 9/14, 15/20 and over 21 years. Medals will be awarded.” According to Twigg, three MECs have been invited to support the project and thus far provincial minister for Community Safety Dan Plato responded with a pledge to motivate the project. According to Twigg, rampant gangsterism is most rife in the areas of Wallacedene, Scottsdene and Scottsville and it is horrific at present. “Communities can support us in our social sport initiatives and create more of these kind of activities to keep the youth busy over and above supporting the police in drug and gangster activities,” he said.

The playing field might be somewhat different, with dusty pitches and makeshift goalposts, but the spirit of the beautiful game continues to transform young lives in the streets of Cape Town nonetheless. Street soccer is here to stay. In fact, the love for the game has reached fever pitch and now the Bergdal Subcouncil will launch a street soccer league in June this year. Street soccer is popular around the world, with its origins in Brazil, not surprising when one looks at the stock of superstar soccer players produced from this country – often starting in the poverty-stricken streets of Rio De Janeiro. No one can really say when exactly, but this format of soccer has been played in Cape Town for decades, with many an “oldtimer” reminiscing about games played growing up in the 60s and 70s. This informal format of soccer does not involve the usual requirements, such as a large field, markings, goal apparatus, corner flags, kit or even the standard 11 players per team. All that is needed is a ball with a wall or a fence used as goals, items such as clothing used as goalposts and loads of enthusiasm, hence the popularity of the game. Even the rules are modified in order to fit the situation and the needs of the game. It is because of this popularity that the Bergdal Subcouncil has committed to forming this league. “We often talk the talk, but by starting this league we are walking the walk, in the fight against drugs, and gangsterism in our towns,” said chairperson Grant Twigg at

‘Children in music make for better learners’ say teachers GARY VAN DYK Learners at Eldene Primary are becoming empowered through music. The Pinnacle Youth Outreach (PYO) of the Rhenish Church, next to the school in Elsies River has formed a partnership with the school to teach music at the school. Rita Valentine of PYO is in charge of the project and feels that the project is about more than just the music. “Research has shown that children involved in music education make for better learners, and that is our main aim with this project,” she says. “While we want them to enjoy playing music we want them to experience how the dedication and discipline needed to play music can also be applied to everything they do, especially when it comes to their education.

“There is also the added goal of keeping them off the streets away from the influences of drug abuse, gangsterism and deviant behaviour.” Jerome Hartley, also from PYO, agrees with Valentine and added that they were very excited about the project. “So far the children are very excited and enjoying the lessons,” he said. “We are happy because we got a bit of a boost from the New Apostolic Church who are in partnership with us in this project. They gave us some recorders to start but we are hoping that there are other sponsors out there who will also help us. “We know that there are so many musical people out in our communities and if they can lend a hand we would welcome it.” V For more information about the project Valen tine can be contacted on 071 371 8499.

Share in the fine brandy spirit Capetonians will now also get the chance to share in the spirit at Fine Brandy Fusion, the country’s premier brandy event, when the Fine Brandy Fusion is presented on Thursday 9 May and Friday 10 May from 17:30 to 21:30 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre. This luxury showcase of SA Brandy marks its Cape Town debut with the theme “Celebrate liquid gold”. Fine Brandy Fusion Sandton – now in its 6th year – will be held at the Sandton Convention Centre in June. There will be lots to see, do, nose and sip for the young and trendy, sophisticates and connoisseurs eager to explore South Africa’s internationally admired brandy industry. A world first to be profiled at the festival is the new Urban Brandy Cocktail route. This creative concept is a modern extension of the popular R62 and Western Cape Brandy Routes, and will take the visitor from Clifton and

Like, dagga should be legal, man TAMMY PETERSEN Hundreds of people from across the city are expected to take to the streets next week to promote “solidarity” among dagga users. Organised by the National Organisation for the Reform of Matekwane Laws in South Africa, NORMLZA and Iqela Lentsango: The Dagga Party of South Africa, the Cape Town Global Cannabis March on Saturday 4 May will be attended by those who support the legalisation of the plant as an “economic resource for public benefit”. Jeremy Acton, the leader of the Dagga Party which is registered for the 2014 national elections, says participants will be celebrating their diversity, unity and mutual respect for each other and the herb. The party’s newsletter, The Daggablad, says dagga was one of the many traditional smokes used by Africans before the advent of the Dutch and British empires. It was also a source of fibres and the seeds were a valuable source of human nutrition. Dagga was first outlawed in South Africa in 1911. “If one views the police’s dagga prosecution statistics, it is clear that dagga use is a very common practice and should be regarded as a legitimate historical cultural practice among citizens which should be respected by narcotics laws and by the Bill of Rights of our Constitution,” the newsletter reads. “Dagga law enforcement costs South Africa millions of rands to imprison otherwise law-abiding and economically active people. The legalisation of dagga would allow the police to have their workload lightened, allowing them to deal with real crimes that have real victims, such as theft, murder, assault and fraud.” Acton says it is important that legislation legalises dagga and that this is “carefully crafted to maximise the benefits and minimise any harms and its control by a ‘dagga elite’”. “The benefits go far beyond merely allowing adults freedom of choice to smoke or ingest weed, which is medically beneficial to all users of the plant,” he claims. “Legalisation would allow all poor citizens to become producers of resources and poverty will thus be greatly alleviated.” States in the US where medical marijuana has been legalised have also seen reductions in traffic accidents, road fatalities, drunk driving arrests, violent and domestic crimes, hard drug use and the suicide rates in young men, he adds. But not all are in favour of dagga being legalised. Mercia Samuelson cannot stomach the sweet

Shaun died of a heroin overdose four years ago shortly before his 21st birthday. “He started smoking dagga with his friends when he was 16,” she recalls. “Despite my nagging, he didn’t consider his habit serious because everyone was doing it.” Over time, she noticed gradual changes in his personality. “Shaun went from being a pleasant, clever child to a paranoid person convinced the world was out to get him.

Bespreek by Computicket.

TYGERBURGER | RAVENSMEAD & BELHAR Woensdag, 24 April 2013

Fun walk a resounding success

Skaapkop, jou lekker ding! Vleisliefhebbers, gee aandag!

Skoliere betaal slegs halfprys. V Om te bespreek vir hierdie unieke geleentheid (ak kommodasie én etekaartjies), kontak Melinda by 027 482 2918.

The five kilometre Carel du Toit Fun Walk on Sunday on the grounds of Tygerberg Hospital was something to experience. In perfect weather hundreds of people turned up and showed their support for the Carel du Toit Centre for Hearing Impaired Children. One could even enter one’s dog into the “race”! This year is the 11th Fun Walk, in aid of deaf children. All proceeds will go towards the Carel du Toit Centre, which is nationally considered as the leading educational institution for deaf children. At this extraordinary centre, deaf children are taught to communicate with speech. If a child is diagnosed with deafness early enough and fitted with the correct hearing aid, they can learn to speak normally, attend a mainstream school and reach their full potential. ’n Children who are diagnosed with deafness too late are unable to catch up on

Speedster may be SA Olympic star

19

STEHAN SCHOEMAN The achievements of Keenan Michau on the athletics track reads like a dream and you can’t help wonder what the future holds for this gifted youngster. Keenan is the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month winner. The 18-year-old from Bernadino Heights Secondary School in Kraaifontein is a speedster of note in the 100 m and 200 m events. Last year he won the Western Cape boys u-17 100 m and 200 m final. He was also a South African youth men 100 m and 200 m finalist. In the same year he was also crowned the SA boys’ u-17 100 m champion. His record this year reads as follows: SA senior men 4 x 100 m relay champion. SA junior men 200 m silver medallist. On provincial level he is the Western Cape school boys’ u-19 100 m and 200 m champion and the club junior men’s 100 m and 200 m champion. His personal best time for the 100 m is 10.47 s and the 200 m is 21.31 s. “It is an honour for me to be the TygerBurger Sportstar of the Month. It feels good to be number one, but the reality is that the hard work only starts now. You never know who’s waiting for you in the next race.” Keenan received a gift pack from SuperSport’s Let’s Play initiative. Hennie Bosman from the Welgemoed Kyokushin-kan dojo gave him R1 000 and Bosman, McNulty and Du Toit Optometrists gave him a pair of sunglasses of his choice. can go one step better than in 2012. “We have a balanced team and quality players in every position. Everyone at the club has a positive mentality,’’ he says. “Equally important is the togetherness of the squad. We spend most of our free time together and that builds great team spirit. That was the secret behind the success of the team of the late 90s, and it’s something that’s finding it’s way into the

current generation. That is why we won the League last season and why I’m positive we will defend it this time around.’’ Jacobs is reluctant to compare the current Riverside Rangers team to the side that won a hat-trick of titles. “I don’t want to compare the two sides. One thing that is similar though, is that both were filled with top quality players,” he says. “In the goalkeeping department we have

two of the most experienced keepers in the league. “The defence has gelled as a unit and provides excellent cover for our goalkeepers. We give the midfielders and strikers the licence to play their attacking game without fear of worrying what’s happening at the back. Riverside Rangers are an offensive team and all our players are attack -minded, which is why we are so confident playing from the back. Most importantly, we communicate well. You can have the best players in the world, but if you can’t communicate, you won’t win.’’

Ajax fails to impress THOMAS CAROLUS

jax Cape Town’s battle to steer clear of the relegation zone suffered a setback when they were beaten 2-0 by Bidvest Wits at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday night. The result leaves the Parow side in the relegation zone, behind Black Leopards on goal difference, and three points ahead of fellow Mother City strugglers Chippa United. The Urban Warriors had Mabuthi Khenyeza back in the starting line-up after his two-match suspension for a sending off, but there was little for the front man to feed off in the initial stages of the encounter.

Chances The early moments saw neither side able

to find much penetration up front, with the exception of a seventh minute chance for Ajax Cape Town , Granwald Scott having his header saved by Emile Baron, following Lebogang Manyama’s cross. Bidvest Wits reply came via a couple of long range efforts, but Tinashe Nengomasha had his effort blocked, while former Free State Stars winger Mzikayise Mashaba pushed his free kick left of the goal. Khama Billiat has been guilty of squandering numerous chances of late for the Parow side, and he again failed to find the target with a right-footed effort, 18 yards out in front of goal. Chances were then exchanged as Khenyeza failed to connect with Lance Davids’ cross, while for Wits, Faty Papy was unable to draw a save from Sander

Westerveld from the edge of the area, whlie Ryan Chapman was off the mark, missing the near post with a fierce effort from a tight angle in the 34th minute.

Opportunity It was Ajax Cape Town though who ended the opening stanza on the front foot, Abia Nale coming to the fore with a decent effort, his 40th minute opportunity from inside the box being dragged wide of goal for what had been Ajax Cape Town’s best chance of the game. Ajax Cape Town started the second half where they left off in the first, having the first two chances after the restart as Matthew Booth headed wide from Billiat’s corner, before Baron made an excellent save to deny Manyama. But it is the visiting team who were to

score first, having given away possession cheaply, the Parow side watched as Sandile Sibande set up Sibusiso Vilakazi to score from close range after 50 minutes. Chances were few and far between after that, with Ajax Cape Town unable to master any kind of meaningful fight back.

Goal And with 10 minutes to go, the Students got the insurance goal they needed when Asive Langwe headed in from Faty’s cross following a very swift counter-attacking move. Things got worse for Ajax Cape Town with five minutes to go when Thulani Hlatshwayo’s challenge on Papy earned him a second yellow card and a dismissal, summing up what was a forgettable night for the Parow side.
