P

olice in Delft are the heroes of the day for a baby born on the streets last week. But, bad service from an ambulance crew could have caused his death. At about 02:00 on the morning of Wednesday 12 June mom-to-be, Soraya Davids from Leiden, started having contractions and realised that she was about to give birth. With no transport available dad-to-be, Matt Damon, decided that they would have to walk to the Day Hospital. Damon explained that while they were walking they realised that the baby was not

going to wait for them to get there. “We were just near the primary school when Soraya said that the baby was coming,” he explained. “I had to just leave here there in the cold and started running to the hospital for help.” Getting to the hospital did not save the day because although there was an ambulance there no help was forthcoming. “I tried telling them about the emergency that was happening on the street, but they were not interested, they told me that I must “phone” the emergency number. “That’s when I ran to the police station and luckily there was some help on hand,” he said.

At the police station Detective Constables Hajiera Nolton and Andy Maloy were about to leave the station for another incident when they spotted Damon running towards them waving his hands. “At first we thought that he was being chased,” says Nolton. “When he explained the situation we knew that the life of this baby was a first priority, and when we got there the baby was already on its way out, but we did the best that we could with the after-birth procedures. “Luckily I have had some experience in this regard and in the past have already delivered some babies out in the field.”

After cleaning mother and infant, the detectives secured their safety and well-being before transporting them to the safety of the medical practitioners at the Delft Day Hospital. This was the first time that Maloy was present at a birth out in the field, but he was very happy to have been part of the experience. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen (Delft station commander) praised the two for going beyond the call of duty and he was impressed with the way they dealt with the trauma. At the time of going to press the Emergency Medical Services were investigating the response from the ambulance staff.

‘Born frees’ tackle real youth issues GARY VAN DYK Youth from Delft were leading the way at Freedom Park in Pretoria this weekend to celebrate youth activities. There was lots of excitement at Delft SAPS when their Cadet Drill team boarded a bus to Pretoria after a special invitation to a youth dialogue against drugs that took place on Saturday. Chief Executive of Freedom Park, Fana Jiyane, said that this event was in response to the call by President Jacob Zuma for the nation to unite against drug abuse. The group from Delft joined young people from Eldorado Park and Kliptown in Gauteng to engage in a facilitated dialogue to share experiences on fighting the scourge of drug abuse and building a better future for themselves. Jiyane points out that when they hosted Youth Day activities in Delft last year, he was encouraged by the success of a community initiative involving the police, education authorities and parents to stamp out drug abuse among youngsters in Delft through a cadet training scheme. “This resulted in disciplined behaviour at home, improved grades at school and greater social cohesion in the community,” he said. “While youth are leading the way in Delft by breaking free from the drug-infested lifestyles in which their parents are imprisoned, in Gauteng youth are entrapping themselves in drugs against the wishes of their parents. “We are hoping that the youth dialogue between these two groups would help them share perspectives about how to fight their common enemy.” He also pointed out how this related to the struggle of youth that began in 1976. “The youth of 1976 whom we honour in this youth month made sacrifices so that the youth of today can enjoy the fruits of our freedom. “Today’s youth, who are called “born frees” and who will be voting for the first time next year are challenged by the evil scourge of drugs which threatens their freedom. “It is important that these young people are given platforms to talk about how they can engage in this new struggle against these social ills,” he said. The event on Saturday was hosted under the theme, Working together for youth development and a drug-free South Africa, and they were addressed by a representative of the SAPS and chairperson of the Delft Community Forum, Reggie Maart. They also engaged in discussion and debate with emphasis on crime and drug abuse among youth, facilitated by community activist Glen Arendse. The main focus was upliftment and empowerment, to enable youth to make a difference in their lives and communities.

Local residents from Uitsig who are making a difference in the community with their gardens are Garit and Magdalena Keffers and Phillip Baron.

GARY VAN DYK A campaign to keep communities clean and tidy is gaining momentum. The Own Love Improve Your Street initiative is making a difference as residents realise that they can take ownership of their environment and create the neat, clean and flourishing neighbourhood they want to live in. As joint partners, the residents of Subcouncil 4 play a significant role together with the city and the business sector in building social capital. In Elsies River The Riverton Estate Residents’ Association, under the leadership of Steve Ross, embarked on an audit of vacant plots and buildings that give the suburb a bad name. They reported properties that were being used for illegal dumping and reported them to the Environmental Health Department who issued warning letters to the owners of these properties. In response. one property owner has erected a fence around the property to prevent illegal dumping and to safeguard the building. Another property owner has acknowledged the compliance notice and is willing to co-operate. He is currently getting quotes to rectify the deficiencies and in the meantime he has promised to start cutting the vegetation himself. In three other instances the compliance notices were ignored and a contractor is being appointed to clean up the plots. The costs will be added to the municipal accounts. This organisation has also started a

landscaping project at a vacant plot when a few volunteers started clearing and levelling ground and the rest of the community joined in by donating PVC sheeting, plants, stone chips and rocks. Workers were also supplied with drinks and food as they completed the task of beautifying a part of Riverton. In future the association is planning to have at least four community gardens in the area. In Uitsig, the community has also started to get into the project and already some residents have been acknowledged for their efforts in their gardens. Proportional representative councillor for the area, Ronel Viljoen said that this area has a high incidence of teen pregnancies, gang activities, drugs, crime and other social problems associated with poverty. “Amidst all this there are still people who have shown that they have pride in their surroundings by maintaining their property and creating beautiful gardens. “We found two homes in Uitsig Avenue and hope that honouring these residents will encourage others to make the same effort to beautify their gardens and yards,” she said. This initiative is also an opportunity for all residents to find those places that make a difference and let the council know about it. New tools will make light work of gardening GARY VAN DYK Community gardens in Belhar got a boost with a donation of equipment last week. Local councillor Desmond Jaftha handed over gardening equipment to various organisations who were busy with their own vegetable gardens. He said that this donation was to help them in their efforts with their projects to assist in feeding those who were going hungry in the area.

Getting some new equipment to help them with their projects were, from left, Robert Scholtz from the Pentech Community Garden, Daniel Wevers from Higher Faith, local councillor Desmond Jaftha, Johanna Pypers from Community Outre ach Consortium, Avril Strauss from Millenium Nation Builders, and Charmaine van Rooyen from Belhar Neighbour hood Development Forum.

“These organisations play a big part in helping to ensure that people who were really needy did not go hungry,” he said. “With the establishment of their gardens they were also showing us that they wanted to become self sustaining by growing their own vegetables for their projects. “We, as the council, felt that we needed to assist them with this donation that included hoses, rakes, spades and barrows, so that more people in the community could assist them with their efforts.”

of the community, thousands of lives were bettered with our donation of R1,4 million in goods and funds to creches, old age homes, shelters and other deserving recipients,” said Etienne Wiese of Round Table. “As Round Table grows in members who dedicate their time to such projects, we look forward to another successful event that will highlight the integral role our organisation plays in caring for and supporting the needs of the community,” he said. Jokes aside, ’Cos we can! will be huge So Marc Lottering, Karen Zoid and Juanita du Plessis walk into the Bellville Civic Centre… What sounds like the beginning of a genre-busting skit, is really part of the exciting lineup of seasoned performers who will appear at the annual Want ons an!/’Cause we can! 2013 charity concert. This will be the 11th consecutive year that Margit Meyer-Rödenbeck, Pedro Kruger and Hennie van Greunen join hands with TygerBurger to organise the concert. What started as a once-off concert in 2003 has since raised in excess of R1,6 million for local charities, ranging from specialneeds schools to drug awareness campaigns, homes for abandoned babies to old age homes and creches. This is the first time that Juanita du Plessis will be performing at the concert, besides Marc and Karen, she’ll be joined on stage by Amanda Strydom, Lize Beekman, Sarah Theron, Loki Rothman, Zanne Stapelberg, Jac de Priester, Janine Neethling, Adam Tas, Broers, Emo Adams & Take Note, Wicus van der Merwe, Albert Frost, Cruschanda, Koos Kombuis, Andriette, Dowwe Dolla, Hulle and Cheree & Wynand. MCs for the evening will be Cape Town’s new glam couple Z radio DJs and movers and shakers Ian Bredenkamp and Elana Afrika-Bredenkamp. Bishop Lavis Drill Cadets want boys to join their activities. PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK

Bishop Lavis cadets want boys to join GARY VAN DYK Bishop Lavis Drill Cadets are on a mission to get more boys to march with them. On Saturday they will be hosting a concert featuring all the members at the hall of Bishop Lavis High School and they’re inviting the community to experience the fun that the children have as part of this organisation. Joy Crow, secretary of the cadets, pointed out that this show was a repeat of one that they held in May, but with very little support from the community. “We are on a mission to show children in the area that they can be part of an activity in their community that can have a positive influence on their lives,” she said. “People in the community are always complaining about the crime and gangsterism in the area, but when it comes to positive initiatives like this they don’t support it,” she said. “Our activities are not just about drilling, its about learning valuable life skills like teamwork, achieving goals, but more importantly how they relate to each other as friends in a positive way.” She added that the life skills activities were also a reason why they wanted more boys to join them. “We want parents to send their boys to join us because from an early age they must be taught how to respect girls, how to respect themselves, and be a part of something positive in their community.” The concert will be held in the NG Church hall on the c/o Lavis Drive and Koppiesdam Road, Opposite Lavis Drive Primary School starting at 16:00, until 19:00, and it will be officially opened by Minister for Safety and Security Dan Plato. Tickets are R20, and will be available at the door. V More information about the cadets and booking for the concert from Joy Crow on 082 634 8552.

Career guidance info On 20 June, the Department of Labour in partnership with Community Women Action (CWA), will be presenting a career guidance and information programme. Strict training pays off STEHAN SCHOEMAN

G

ambate in Japanese translates to perseverance – something that Henry Bosman and Neill Bruce learned all too well in their three-month tenure in Tokyo. Now, back home in their beloved country, the Bellville boys are reflecting on a once-ina-lifetime experience. “Let me tell you, it was tough. We were under no illusion that it would be a walk in the park, but boy were we in for a surprise. “We were based at the Honbu dojo which is the international headquarters for Kyokushin-kan karate. Our day would start

with the cleaning of the dojo and after that we would have intensive training.

Rice “Some days we trained up to seven hours. On a another note, the Japanese eat rice morning noon and night and surprisingly not as many fish as you would think. It’s quite expensive over there,” said Henry. Neill reflects on the many intensive sessions they had. “You don’t ever fear that you are in pain. On Tuesdays we had fighting classes with their u-65kg, u-70kg and u-80kg champions.” “Those guys are at another level of tough, sometimes I would take kicks to the leg so

that I can barely stand on it, but somehow you pull through and only check on your injuries after the fight.” “Looking back on it, it made me and Henry so much more tough, not only mentally, but physically as well. We were also instructed to give some classes to six to 13year-olds. That was fun and it helped us with our own technique. “As you stand in front of the class teaching them the various techniques, you have to constantly check them and yourself to make sure you are doing things correctly.”

dag teen Schotsche Kloof/Walmer ’n drastiese verbetering moet ondergaan.

Gun Run entries open to all Entries for one of Cape Town’s biggest and most popular road running events, the OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run, have opened. The event takes place on Sunday 13 October and participants can choose to take part in the

21 km half marathon or 10 km run/walk and five km fun run/ walk. Participants can enter at any Sportsman’s Warehouse or online at www.thegunrun.co.za. Entries close on Sunday 29 September. Call Top Events: 021 511 7130.

standing of this ancient practice and stamina have improved dramatically. They have also revised their training schedule to keep the intensity high. “These boys really surprised me. Just looking at them made me realise that these are not the same boys that I sent to Japan three months ago.” “They are physically, mentally and technically better. I’m excited to see them perform in upcoming tournaments,” said Shihan Hennie Bosman of the Welgemoed dojo. Come August, when they will be competing in the Len Barnes Memorial Tournament in Durban, they are sure to be more prepared for the challenge.

SANTOS: KNIFEEDGE

People’s Team are ready for play-offs LIAM MOSES

E

ngen Santos FC will face two seasondefining moments this week when they take on Mpumalanga Black Aces and Chippa United in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) promotion/relegation play-offs. The People’s Team did well to fight their way back into contention for promotion after a disastrous start in the National First Division (NFD). But their hard work could all be in vain if they fail to beat Aces and Chippa in the two home games on Thursday 20 and Sunday 23 June. Head coach Ian Palmer admits both matches will be crucial, but says a loss will not be the death of his side’s promotion hopes.

Setback “I don’t think this game is do or die, because we still have to play Chippa soon after that. If we lose it won’t be good and it will be huge setback,” he says. “But we are thinking about that. We are going full-out to get one over Aces and put us in the driving seat. Aces are in the driving seat, because they are the only team with a win. The playing field will be levelled as we will be at home.” Santos had an undesirable start to the play-offs last month when their first match, away to Chippa, finished in a goalless draw. Chippa went on to lose 1-0 to Aces in the second play-off match. The Mpumalanga side now top the standings ahead of their clash against Santos, who have not had much success against Aces this season. But Palmer will hope recent form and past results are not an indicator of what Thursday’s result will be. Regenerate The People’s Team drew 0-0 against Aces in their last encounter in Mpumalanga in April, while Aces beat Santos 1-0 at Athlone Stadium in the season opener last October. Palmer says the fixtures have not been kind to his side, but he is confident his troops will recover before their Cape derby against Philippi’s Chippa. “Aces are blessed because all their games are spaced widely. After the match against us, they have six days before they play again. The draw actually favours them,” says Palmer. “Chippa also play us and then have to go to Aces three days later. It’s about how quickly you recover. We have the Sports Science Institute of South Africa on our side to help us regenerate for the next game.” Fixtures Santos’ fixture against Aces will kickoff at Cape Town Stadium at 19:30 on Thursday 20 June. Chippa United will host Aces on Wednesday 26 June and the final fixture of the play-offs will see Santos travel to Mpumalanga to face Aces on Saturday 29 June.

Aangesien daar vir ’n beperkte getal voorsiening gemaak word, moet belangstellendes Lindsay Booysen so gou moontlik by 021 659 4502 bel gedurende kantoorure.
