) Drug war or vigilante action?

TTurf urf war curveball GARY VAN DYK

Drug war, or a community fighting drugs? That is the question facing investigators after a house in Bonteheuwel was petrol bombed on Saturday night, leading to three other houses being destroyed and leaving 30 people homeless. While initial reports indicated that the incident was related to a turf war over drugs, it is slowly emerging that this could have been the action of a community tired of the destruction that drug abuse is causing in neighbourhoods.

A pastor from Bonteheuwel, who did not want to be named but also has a congregation in the Delft area revealed that in recent months there seems to have been an increase in drug dealers moving into areas. He said that in his ministry almost all the families have been affected by drugs. “It is sad when you hear these stories of how families have lost children to drugs,” he said. “In the areas where this incident happened, in Oleander and Almond streets, there have been stories of how these drug dealers have taken over the whole community, or are

attempting to. “The problem starts with the high unemployment and poverty in the area, and these drug dealers come into the area and start giving people money to keep quiet. “Problem is that these neighbourhood children get caught up in these drug dens, which starts destroying their families as well.” One of his congregation, a mother of four who also did not want to be named, agreed with the pastor saying that the public saw the police as being helpless in the situation, because these dens just kept on going, even after raids on them. “People who have been affected

have been talking about doing something themselves for a long time,” she said. “I don’t know who did this bombing but the next morning everybody was talking about how they should have done it a long time ago. “We are sad about the innocent people who have been hurt but we have been concerned for our safety for a long time. “One of my children is dead because of drugs, and another is destined to the same fate because of his involvement with gangs, and the story is the same with all of my neighbours. . Experiencing the street life

Poise: Ballroom dance lovers were treated to some worldclass action when the AIM Dance Sport Academy in conjunction with Aarhus Dance presen ted a showcase of dance at the Belhar Indoor Centre on Saturday. Highlight of the event was the dancing of the current World and British Open Champions Emanuel Valeri and Tania Kehlet who dazzled the audience with their superb display of dancing. The couple also hosted a workshop and lecture for local dancers on Sunday.

You can’t really know a man until you walk a mile in his shoes.

City claims ‘malicious damage’ . From page 1. “If the police don’t start doing more about these dens, it looks like more people will start taking the law into their own hands, and more innocent people could be hurt.” The dwellings affected by the fire are owned by the council and arrangements are under way by the city’s insurers to assess the destruction in order to effect emergency repairs. The city’s disaster response teams assisted the victims that were affected by the fire with clothing, food parcels and blankets. The city has called on the police to open a case of malicious damage to these properties. The police are investigating the incident and have also undertaken to have visible patrols and policing in the area. Capt Marie Louw, communications officer for Bishop Lavis police, confirmed that investigations are under way but that people should not take the law into their own hands. “We realise that communities are conR AV E N S M E A D / B E L H A R

cerned about drug dens in their neighbourhoods, but when it is reported we have to investigate it properly to be assured of a conviction. “There are other ways of showing their unhappiness but it does not involve destruction that could get them in prison.” In conclusion the pastor feels that it is time that the government played a bigger part in destroying the drug culture on the Cape Flats, and across the country. “Politicians must stop playing with our lives,” he said. “They must look into the real causes of the problem which is the unemployment and lack of proper education for our children. “We must hold them responsible for what happens in our country, and they must lead from the front by giving up their fancy suits and cars, their palaces and perks. “They are responsible for our children’s future.”

Marc Buhrer (31) and Shane McConnachi (32) put this saying into practice recently. In trying to understand what life is like for the thousands of homeless people living on the streets of Cape Town, they criss-crossed the city as two of the destitute. The two men, from Sea Point and Bloubergstrand respectively, not only walked a mile but spent a whole week on the streets, without the luxuries they are accustomed to in their lives as successful entrepreneurs. The Walk the Walk initiative was Marc’s idea. “For my 31st birthday in March this year I decided to do something different to my debaucherous 30th. I got some mates together and we cooked food for 220 people at The Haven shelter. Everyone that got involved said it was the most amazing thing and it was the best birthday I ever had. So we just decided to go bigger and better,” Marc explained. This led to the Facebook group Dare to Share through which they served more food to people living on the streets. The support from co-opTV, a South African online TV broadcaster, meant Marc and Shane had two video diaries posted online each day in which they reported back on their experiences and emotions. “I’m tired, hungry, exhausted and mildly frustrated and it’s only day one at 15:30. We have tried doing a few things but are kept being told no, no. What if you are in this situation for years and years and you are kept being told no, by people who seem to have everything, isn’t that where crime comes from?” Mark pondered on the first day. The first night they slept at a construction

site in Green Point. “It was miserably, miserably cold, the temperature must have dropped below 10 degrees. We had no cover and then the wind picked up,” Shane said. He said perception is lethal. “We met a lady who has been living on the streets for 45 years. She is asthmatic, has HIV and TB and is an epileptic. “When she gets her medicine she is obviously drowsy. “The police automatically think she is drunk or high when they see her and they lock her up. She wakes up in a cell. That’s not really human rights – but that’s the first thing we do, we assume.” “You see a guy out of Pollsmoor, full of tattoos. You don’t have the income to get rid of the tattoos even if your life has changed and you have learnt your lesson,” Marc said. “We have met people who have made such positive changes like Gasper,” Mark said in reference to a former 28s prison gang member who they found working at a plot in Tamboerskloof, clearing away wood. The streets are however a drug and Mark has changed his mind in how to support those living there. “You live from meal to meal. You deal with where you’ll sleep that evening, when you are tired and you have to sleep and that only happens after you have dinner,” Mark said, explaining how life pulls you in. He adds that the lack of routine and discipline also prevents many street people from getting off the streets permanently. “Giving these people money only keeps them on the streets. We should rather support them by buying overnight vouchers from shelters or by supporting the shelters themselves.” Visit http://new.livestream.com/co-opT/ events/1625000 for Walk the Walk footage.

Community prayer call There’s a call for the community to pray this Sunday. The Delft Religious Forum operates as the Religious Desk and functions under the auspices of the Delft Community Policing Forum, on which all churches and pastors are represented. This initiative implements and executes projects and programmes of a religious nature in the area. Part of their intervention – to assist the SAPS in dealing with crime – is to visit hotspots identified by them. During this visit they have religious services and prayer meetings where the help of the Lord is requested to eliminate this evil and to heal the community from its effects. Weekly prayer sessions are held and this past weekend it was held in the vicinity of Hindle Primary. The session to be held this coming week, will be at Supreme Supermarket, on the corner of Eindhoven Drive and Minnesota Street in Eindhoven. Residents are invited to attend the session that will start at 14:00.

Skakel kapt. William Dreyer hieroor by 082 469 2549 of 021 467 8233. Heavy brass arrive GARY VAN DYK

The Uitsig Community Brass Band is ready to blow up a storm to fight crime and gangsterism in the area. Started in 2005 by Vernon Hendricks, the group is growing stronger as more youngsters in the area discover that there is more to life than the crime, gangsterism and drug-abuse that is so rife in their neighbourhoods. Music has always played a big part in showing Hendricks the path to achieving positive potential, even after a shooting accident in 1994 left him in a wheelchair. “I’ve been involved with music of the minstrels (klopse) since I was very young,” he says. “It always gave me a sense of pride in myself when I was taking part in the carnivals and marches, but when I was shot I did not see it as a disability, but an opportunity to do something more in the community. “I started to play the trumpet, and saw the need to be out there and encouraging our youth to start playing music to keep them away from all the negative influences.” Hendricks pointed out that it has been very difficult for them to keep going without any form of sponsorship, but they kept on going. “When you realise what this means to the children you know that you can’t give up.

“They’re learning more than music, they are learning how to communicate, to work together and they’ve even seen that this music can become a career for them. “Many of them now want to take it further by joining the armed forces to play in those bands.” Ashlyn Marcus is one of the members who has been with the group since 2006 and has grown into one of the members entrusted with teaching music to the group. “All of us really enjoy playing music, and my aim is eventually to get all of us to start reading music properly,” he says enthusiastically. “Through my church I started to learn to read, and now I want to impart that to the others in the band. I think that our playing and performances will improve drastically with this skill. “My dream is that more children and youth will join us because taking part in this shows you that you don’t have to be part of the crime out there. “I also wish that we could get more help from the community, and businesses so that we could get more instruments to teach more children who join.” The group will be hosting a Family Fun Day and outing to Kogel Bay on Saturday 24 November to raise funds for their various activities. Tickets are R100 for adults, children 11 to 15 pay R50, and under-10 is R25. Further information and booking from Hendricks on 073 336 3415.

talents to start exploring their creativity.” The exhibitions starts at 18:00 on Friday until 20:00, then again on Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00. Admission is free.

An exciting art exhibition is coming to Elsies River. This weekend five artists will be hosting an art exhibition at Multi-Purpose Hall in Halt Road on Friday and Saturday. Grant Jurius will be showing mixed media painting and drawing; Petricia Muller, textile installation; Love SB is a graffiti artist; Patricia Jurius, mixed media installation, and Scott Eric Williams will be showing his photography and painting. One of the artists Grant Jurius, pointed out that the exhibition comprises artwork made from various media including painting, drawing, and sculpting. “This is an exciting event for the area because all the artists have some connection with Elsies River and surrounding,” he says. “In this exhibitions these artists express their hopes, dreams, fears, or just pure expression and seek to interpret their experience of ‘Elsies’.” “The aim and objective of the exhibition is not only to display the talents of the participants but also what lies in the communities of the Cape Flats. “There is a history in Elsies River that is not academically explored but rather through the experience and knowledge of the artists themselves we want to inspire, and maybe encourage other young Grant Jurius, getting ready to show his artwork.

Never too late to learn The 45-year-old Agnesia Willemse recently turned heads when she registered for the National Certificate (NC), Office Administration programme at the Northlink College’s Parow Campus. Agnesia worked as a cleaner for Prestige at the Parow Campus but decided to exchange the mop for a pen. “I chose to study at Northlink College as I knew that I will receive the proper training, encouragement and support from the Northlink staff that will allow me to reach my dreams. It was a struggle at first as my peers were more advanced regarding technology and schooling skills, but I continued to strive towards excellence seeking extra assistance from dedicated staff members and student support services,” said Agnesia. She is currently making good progress academically and was also appointed chairperson of the Parow Campus Student Representative Council (SRC) for 2012 and to the Secretary of the SRC Executive Committee. During this process, Agnesia has also inspired two other cleaning staff members to follow their dreams of furthering their education and training. “The support from the Northlink College staff in the form of consultation by the psychologist and the Academic Support Facilitator that focused on addressing my educa-

tional and personal needs, played a pivotal role in my journey thus far,” she said.

Hier sit Elsabe Bester en Koba Paxton by ’n foto van Willa Paxton, Koba se oorlede man.

Albei word in die indrukwekkende ouditorium by Hugo Lam-

brechts in Pictonstraat, Parow, aangebied.

They recently received their certificates and jackets, where they were also thanked for their unselfish service to the community.

City gives high-tech reference

As part of the city’s commitment to improving communication with all residents, the launch of a new function on the SAP C3 fault reporting system has been introduced. The launch of this function comes after previous occasions, when residents and businesses contacted the city call centre to report a fault or log a service request, and a reference number was given telephonically. The lengthy number was often difficult to record if a resident was calling from a handsfree mobile device in their car or did not have a pen and paper on hand. Now, when customers contact the Call Centre (086 010 3089), they can receive the reference number via SMS or email. This option makes it more convenient to keep the reference number so that they can follow up on any outstanding service re-

quests. This is the first of a two-phase initiative which the City of Cape Town’s customer relations department completed successfully last week. In the second phase, the city will send a second SMS or email to the complainant when the request has been dealt with and has been closed on the SAP C3 system. “In order to keep Cape Town a well-run city, it is important that service requests and logged faults are acknowledged and attended to timeously. “This new system will ensure that where it is necessary for residents to follow up on their logged requests, they have their reference numbers easily at hand,” said mayoral committee member for Corporate Services Alderman Demetri Qually.

Indeed, every dog has his day ANDRÉ BAKKES

If the two-year-old Rusty could write he would probably compose a Shakespearean love sonnet for his doggie sweetheart Rossie. “Oh sweet Rossie, how I longed for thee? I compare our time apart to a long winter’s night, and when we reunited my heart jumped with glee.” Rusty would tell her in rhyme what dangers he faced to be with her again and how much he pined for her. He might also know that if it wasn’t for a homeless person named Sherman Theunissen (29), then he would never have seen the love of his life again... The big boerboel with the soft heart was separated from Rossie a couple of weeks ago when he was adopted by a Ruyterwacht resident. Try as he might, he could not accept that Rossie wasn’t a part of his life any more. That was the first time he escaped into the unforgiving world beyond the gates. He might have wandered around the streets of Ruyterwacht for a day, perhaps two, but he was quickly claimed by someone. This person tied him up in his/ her yard, but the rope that kept Rusty from Rossie could not appease his yearning heart. The pining dog escaped again, determined to find his way back to the Lucky Lucy Foundation in Durbanville where Rossie was waiting for him. It was then, while Rusty mean-

Sherman Theunissen found Rusty wandering through the streets of Ruyterwacht. For both him and the adorable boerboel, this chance meeting was a godsend. Photo: André Bakkes dered through the streets of Ruyterwacht, that the right person found him. A man who could not even afford food for himself took Rusty in, gave him a few biscuits and water, and then let the dog sleep with him in his tiny shack. Sherman recognised Rusty as the same dog on the missing posters, so the next day an acquaintance of his lent him money so that he could contact the Lucky Lucy Foundation and tell them that he found the brown dog with the creamy white chest.

Rusty and Rossie apparently yelped with unparalleled joy when they saw each other again. The foundation’s Richelle Graham and André Verbiest met TygerBurger at Sherman’s shack this Monday to tell the story that has touched hundreds of people on Facebook. “The pedigree boerboels – Rusty and Rossie – are a married couple,” smiles Richelle. “They came from Stellenbosch Animal Welfare and were on death row, due to be euthanised. When we went there we offered to give them

homes, so we took them in. A lovely lady named Beverley, who also lives in the Ruyterwacht area, said that she wanted to adopt Rusty for protection. Everything went well, but then Rusty escaped.” Thousands of pamphlets were distributed and then Sherman saw one and stuck it on his trolley, which he uses to collect cans for recycling purposes. On the Sunday he was doing just this when he saw Rusty jog down Halt Road in the direction of Elsies River. “Some people called Rusty to

come to them, then the dog would stop, look at them and run away. He was dragging a long rope behind him, so when he ran past I grabbed it. He didn’t put up a fight, so I brought him back to my place,” remembers Sherman. His little shack is located in the cramped “back yard” of a friend. It is just big enough for a uncomfortable makeshift “bed”, which is basically just a few blankets placed on hard stone. That night, after he shared his biscuits with Rusty, the dog slept with him in his shelter. He contacted the foundation first thing in the morning, and for his efforts he will now have a ticket out of his poverty. André says that they will supply Sherman with a little bath and “dip”, which he can put on his trolley and give dogs in the vicinity anti-flea treatment for a minimal amount. The dip will be topped up by the foundation for free and any income Sherman generates will go straight to his pocket. The Lucky Lucy Foundation also gave him hundreds of rands of vouchers to show their appreciation. Since Rusty’s story was put on Facebook, more than 450 people have “liked” it and about 200 have commented on it. One of these comments reads: “A wonderful story and so glad it had a happy ending. Sherman is obviously one of ‘Nature’s Gentlemen” and, I hope, you were able to make his life a little more comfortable.” Visit www.luckylucy.org.

Boerboele ‘rustig’ ANDRÉ BAKKES

Daar is min honde wat mense se broeke so laat bewe soos boerboele. Daar was dus heelwat beweriges Sondag by Bothasig se Hoërskool Bosmansdam toe sowat 70 van dié honde hul beste poot voorgesit het in ’n boerboel-kompetisie.

Residents respond to country’s new Randelas Brand new South African bank notes sporting former president Nelson Mandela’s face on the front came into circulation last Tuesday 6 September. According to media releases President Jacob Zuma, at a press briefing, said the new South African bank notes bearing the image of Nelson Mandela would make South Africans remember their achievements. The new note series have the same R10, R20, R50, R100 and R200 denominations and same sizes with the engraving of Mandela’s face appearing on the different coloured currency. TygerBurger spoke to local residents to find out how they felt about the newly released notes. “I am proud to say that I am part of a country with a leader like Madiba. He deserves it,” said Shimoney Regter from Eerste River. This was but one of the positive reactions citizens expressed in reaction to the new notes. However, not everyone was impressed with the change. Overall, mixed feelings were forthcoming from members of the public on Tuesday. Some people knew that the notes will be changing thanks to public awareness campaigns. Others were truly shocked. The notes which now sports much flashier colours were put in the same category as “monopoly money” by some. “Someone brought it to me and I thought it looked fake and it’s too big and bright,” said 20-year-old Nikita Britow from Bell– ville. “The colour is too bright, it looks extremely fake and it’s just ugly,” said Megan Visagie from Bellville. The new notes have new security features, including raised print and a the paper changes colour when lifted and exposed to light. Reserve governor Gill Marcus described the South African currency as a “symbol of the nation”.

Roxy Thsiwala from Delft: The material is very different and it certainly catches your eye. It’s amazing that Mandela is on it. Marc Hen dreckse from Plumstead: The notes look cool. It’s something different. It does look like Monopoly money, but it stands out and is a great way to honour him.” Daniëlle Daniels from Northpine: It looks a bit fake, but it’s great that Mandela is on there. He is an icon. I like the R100 note because it stands out.

KuoChen Wu from Boston: The notes are inte resing and very fresh. Would be easy to recog nise a fake. I know it’s important to the count ry that Mandela is on there.

Ian Barnard from Bellville: “I am proud that Madiba was chosen as a symbol on our curren cy notes. All the recognition should be given to him. This is a way to make the youth aware of the important role he played in this country and for outsiders to know who he is when they come here.” Photos: Tamsyn Coerecius

So is Ghoempie gebore,” vertel Carike.

Thomas recently competed as a reserve member of the Western Province Team at the Interprovincial Team Eventing Championships held at Arlington Race Course in Port Elizabeth on 3 and 4 November. This was an historic moment for South African Eventing as Thomas achieved his ambition to be the first black rider to compete at FEI1* level. “The best thing about this show was being a part of the Western Province team. Everyone has been so supportive. And to come here and have a good ride,” a delighted Thomas said after the PE show. The upcoming World Cup qualifier is organised by the newly formed Cape Town Equestrian. This is the only international show jumping competition in Cape Town and forms the last leg of the South African Series of the FEI World Cup Jumping Championship. The type of jumps that feature on the course are a challenge to these top national riders, offering the audience an opportunity to experience the close bond existing between horse and rider as they negotiate the course. The classes are closely contested and, with more than 142 riders already entered, there will be much to interest visitors. Entrance is free for Wednesday to Friday, tickets for Saturday and Sunday are R20 and can be booked via Computicket. The Glenellen Farm showgrounds are situated on Westerford Way, off Valley Road, Hout Bay.

The second stop on the Bondi Blu/Laguna Mall kiteracing series that was held at Big Bay last week provided a steady 14 knots south-easter wind and a relatively calm ocean. Sailing speeds from the athletes were therefore amazing to watch as they moved around the course just outside of the rocky little islands. At the start of the race it was Olaf Marting who started on port tack and who straight away had an advantage over the rest of the field. Title contenders Oswald Smith and Colin Heckroodt’s battle for second position saw them closing the distance on Marting. The latter had to eventually give up the race as his kite size of choice proved too small for the wind conditions. A little further back in the field another battle was going on between Ettienne Oelofse and Oscar Armstrong. The victory in the men’s open category eventually went to Smith, followed by Heckroodt and then Oelofste. In the women’s division Iva Lopez came out trumps over Simone Swanepoel. The men’s junior category was won by Oscar Armstrong followed by Dylan Adriaans.

UWK knou United SAREL BURGER

Rangers too good for Parks William Jacobs’ second half goal proved enough to secure Riverside Rangers a 1-0 victory over Norway Parks in a semi-final match of the SAFA Cape Town play-offs at Avonwood Park on Sunday. The only goal came in the 60th minute and the home side faced a nervous 20 minutes with two men down as they held on to the final whistle. Riverside Rangers will now meet Firefighters in the final. A genuine two-footed player, William Jacobs can out-sprint even the quickest defenders, and his adaptability means he can move up front when needed. He also has a relaxed temperament, so doesn’t rise to provocation. Despite the defeat, Norway Parks deserve some credit as they put up a brave fight but could not score a goal. Composed in defence, Riverside Rangers’ midfield gave Norway Parks players no chance to control the game, as they took the game to a high tempo. In more than 90 minutes of intense battle, Joshua Jacobs, the Riverside Rangers goalkeeper did not have a save to make and has

to be something Norway Parks will reflect on with huge regret. Deon Warely, the Norway Parks coach, opted for a more cautious conservative approach, packing out his midfield and leaving Zane Alexander to lead the visitors from Kensington’s attack. No easy task at the best of times , but particularly difficult against defenders of the quality of Horatuis Petersen. It was a limp performance from Norway Parks lacking finesse, lacking those usual levels of drive and determination. They surrender possession far too easily and then show a lack of energy and desire to get the ball back. More worryingly, their once proud defence has become depressingly leaky. They are the elementary mistakes that unravel a team’s hard work in seconds, and Norway Parks is finding that out the hard way. “Unfortunately we didn’t get the second goal, but it worked out okay. We could do with a bit more drive and power in front of goal. Sometimes there was too much passing close to goal,” said the Riverside Rangers coach Leslie Mondo.
