DBVKLAGTE: SOEK OOK DIEGENE WAT VIDEO’S MAAK

Nóg skole betrek by diere-seks BRENDEN RUITER

D

Magdalene Johnson (77) won the 100m for women between the ages of 70 and 79 years at the Metropole Regional Golden Games in Blue Downs on Friday. Johnson, from Silver Threads in Belhar, won the race in a time of 18,66 seconds. PHOTO:CARINA ROUX

Principals urged to take the lead RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

rincipals, deputy principals and heads of department from across the Peninsula congregated in Kuils River this past weekend to attend a Quality Management Conference. Organised by the Woolworths Making the Difference Educational program, MySchool and the Western Cape Department of Education, the event was held at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute in Kuils River. The aim of the seminar was to provide principals and heads of department with additional leadership skills to manage their schools more successfully. Guest speaker and former principal at Grey’s Academy in the Free State, Johan Volsteedt, told principals on Saturday morning that if they want to influence people they need to bring their hearts to school. He told principals, slowly but surely if they keep grinding away they can achieve success. “It is essential that we improve all the time,” he said. “We have to try to achieve something better in ourselves. Your knowledge, your passion and compassion, the students should be able to bring that into their own lives,” he continued. He said upholding good values was very important. Volsteedt said principals should always encourage learners to be products of their choices and not of their circumstances. “All children have hearts, they have goodness in them but often they have circumstances that are thrust upon them.” Newly appointed Western Cape MEC of Education, Debbie Schafer, who addressed the crowd earlier during the morning, said her department’s ultimate objective for the next five years is to deepen and strengthen quality education for all. “Critical to this vision is leadership within our schools, leadership that consists of a strong principal, an equally strong deputy principal, a supportive and constructive school governing body and a passionate and committed heads of department team. “Each of you here today are absolutely essential in providing a quality education to

our learners,” Schafer said. She said principals are first and foremost responsible for the efficient management of their departments. “In other words, how well your department runs is largely the result of the decisions that you and your management team take. “You are also essential to providing direction and educational vision both within your school and community. “You have the professional responsibility to stand up and constructively question decisions which affect your department and the interests of the learners at your schools,” She said it is therefore critical that they

ensure all heads of department have the skills and knowledge to lead their departments effectively, offering support to their principals and management teams. “That is why the department has over the last few years initiated training workshops that target the roles and responsibilities of heads of departments through numerous programs at this very venue, as well as courses for aspiring principals and school leaders,” Schafer said. Others in attendance on Saturday included Head of Education Penny Vinjevold, Woolworths management staff, and adventurer and motivational speaker Braam Malherbe.

Universe’s building blocks explained The topic, “Neutrinos: Little spies in our universe” will be the discussion at iThemba Labs’ public lecture later this month. The lecture is set to take place on Wednesday 18 June. Prof Shaun Wyngaardt, head of the nuclear physics research group at Stellenbosch University, will introduce the unusual properties of this subatomic particle and how it could help scientists understand some of the universe’s mysteries. “Neutrinos are one of the fundamental particles found in nature.

D

“My droom is om my eie werkswinkel in Zimbabwe te hê. As dinge anders was, was ons by die huis.”

Bottlebomb scare a hoax says police ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

A age-old warning about a wave of “Drano bomb” attacks has been spreading once again on social media. This warning, attributed to the South African Police Service, is nonsense, says Table View station commander, Colonel Dirk Vosloo. “It’s the first time I’ve heard about it,” says Vosloo when TygerBurger asked him about the warning. The information making people anxious is that criminals put Drano (Jeyes Fluid in South Africa), tin foil and a little water in a plastic drink bottles and screw the cap back on. They then leave it visible on your property so that you’l pick it up to throw away. But the warning is that if the mixture is agitated by being picked up, it will build up enough gas within 30 seconds to blow up with enough force to remove a hand or arm.

Spreading fear Vosloo says that these warnings would be circulated within the police network before being made public, and he is completely unaware of any such activity. According to the webpage Hoax Slayer, the message has apparently been circulating the globe since 2010, slightly adjusted to spread fear in local communities. “In many cases the bombs explode or are disposed of without causing injury. Often, the homemade bombs do not go off at all,” states Hoax Slayer. The website nonethess advises care when picking up suspicious looking plastic or glass bottles.

Twee stories van Tier in skryfbundel MAGRIET THERON @magrietron

T

Gaan dieselfde winterstorie hom herhaal? Of gaan dieselfde treurige winterstorie hom maar net weer herhaal?

Simpatie met dié arme honde My hart breek as ek sien haweloses stap so in die reën. Ek kry hulle so bitter jammer. ELLEN HUSSELMANN Epos

Service poor areas to keep WC blue In response to Johan Swart’s letter “Só kan die W-Kaap sy blou behou” (TygerBurger, 4 June). I agree politicians and ward councillors, irrespective of which party they represent, should be more visible in our areas. I come from a typical Cape Flats coloured community, where service delivery is

almost non-existent. Some areas such as Uitsig, Bonteheuwel and Bishop Lavis, just to name a few, seems as if they were forgotten after families were relocated there during apartheid. Change has occurred, but for the worst. Never have I seen anyone come to sweep the streets of Uitsig like they do in the suburbs. My mother requested Premier Helen Zille’s assistance in getting her pension reinstated more than two years ago. To date, we have not had a single response from her or her office. I guess the poor are only good enough when their votes are needed to keep the Western Cape blue. I am tired of plastic smiles and empty promises. ANONYMOUS Email

Home for the deaf is a happy haven I would like to share my joy with all TygerBurger readers. As I am completely deaf, I was forced to move to Dalabat, a home for the deaf, and I did not know what to expect. Well, I can assure you, Dalabat is a haven. The staff are incredible. They work so hard and cook and clean. They see to the frail and sick seniors with so much compassion. They always have smiles on their faces and all the residents are very friendly. It is like one, big, happy family. There is such a warm and pleasant atmosphere – no rushing, stress or tension. And the food is very good. I can truthfully say I am so happy to be here. When I arrived I was given a lovely welcome and I instantly joined the happy family. May God bless all the staff and residents, and may His peace and love grow from day to day, so that others who come here may feel the presence of God. GRANNY JEWEL Bellville

Balle by Chinese winkel bons nie My seun koop twee tennisballe voor skool by ’n Chinese winkel.

Smiley (top) and Jesse have found their forever home after three years.

‘Old maids’ find their forever home

A

sad story with a very happy ending. This is the tale of Smiley and Jesse, two “old maids” of the dog world, who were found feral, neglected and heavily pregnant in a township by the police and later handed over to the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL) in Bellville. Rene Southwood, general manager of the AACL, tells their story, which started three years ago when the two pregnant dames were brought in from Khayelitsha. “They found a place near the police station where they both gave birth (to 17 pups between them) and raised their pups,” Rene said. But both dogs were feral, meaning they had had little or no contact with humans.

Harrassed and stoned “They had been harassed and stoned by the people, especially the children of the community,” she said. “The staff at the police station knew that something needed to be done urgently and contacted us.” “I will never forget the day the two of them were brought to our premises. They were scared beyond belief. We were not able to move them with leads and we had to carry them in,” Rene said. The two black Labrador crosses were made comfortable and became part of the family, she said, showing care and compassion when taking care of each other’s pups. This is when they became Smiley and Jesse. The pups were adopted and the Smiley and Jesse began their rehabilitation. “Slowly they made progress. After a year we were able to put collars around them,” Rene said. The two became the AACL Bellville’s mascots, but they still needed a forever home. “We sometimes got very despondent, not being able to find them homes, but we never lost hope.” A lady came and adopted one of their animals and saw the “mammie pair”. Inseperable The two dogs were then introduced to the woman’s pack, and Rene admits they didn’t know what to expect last Sunday. “We took them for a walk, all together, and it all went without incident. Then we took them to the yard, to see how things would go off lead.” Smiley and Jesse just stuck together, not leaving each other’s side for a second. There was no problems with the other dogs.” She said their new owner is a “calm and patient” person and saying goodbye was hard. “It was very hard to leave them there. We were told that once we left, they panicked and tried to get out of the gate after us. It was a very bittersweet moment, almost like leaving your own dogs behind, but we know it is the best thing for them. And I am happy to report that is is going very well “Their undying love and commitment for each other is a example to us all.”

Record entries set for Battle of the Titans II STEHAN SCHOEMAN

K

evin Schwartz, owner and producer of the Battle of the Titans showcase and President of IFBB Western Province, has taken South African bodybuilding and bikini fitness to the next level. Following last year’s successful launch, the show to be held at the CPUT Bellville campus on Saturday 21 June is the talk of the town. Battle of the Titans II prize money is in excess of R150 000 - something that seemed only a dream for athletes a year or two ago. The overall Titan Warrior will walk away with a whopping R10 000, Ladies and Men’s Athletic Physique Overalls will receive R5 000, never mind the addition prize money and gifts in all the line-ups. Adding to that, South Africa’s newest IFBB PRO bodybuilder, Andrew Hudson, will make his first guest pose appearance since turning professional. Local lad Xolile Damba was the overall winner last year and crowned Titan Warrior 2013. He will have his hands full retaining his title. World Junior Champion Bodybuilder Louis Bessinger from East London will do battle as a senior at this event and challenge the Ultimate Warrior 2014 crown. Due to the fact that you never really know who will compete at a bodybuilding show, one will only know at weigh-in the evening

before the competition. However, there are some big names expected to come fight it out on stage for the spoils. “The response has been nothing short of phenomenal. Everyone is talking and looking forward to Battle of the Titans II. I really do think this is the biggest and best show ever to be held in Cape Town - in fact South Africa. Altogether 100 VIP tickets went on sale and were sold within days,” said Schwartz. Standard tickets are available at the door on the day. “If you look at the record turnout of athletes we had a few months ago at the SSN Cape Classic, this is going to be much more entertaining with special effects and lighting. I have added a opening surprise for all athletes and spectators,” says Schwartz. “We had 134 athletes competing at the SSN Cape Classic show, for Battle of the Titans II we could easily double that number. The growth of the sport in the country but especially Western Province is incredible. I believe the public and athletes support me and what I stand for,” he said. Due to the fact that a large number of athletes are expected to compete, the weigh-in, which usually takes place the morning of the competition, has been moved to the Friday evening. It will all happen at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in Bellville, with weigh-in and registration on Friday afternoon from 17:00-20:00.

Xolile Damba was the overall winner at Battle of the Titans last year.

RACING: LOCAL HERO EXPECTED TO SHINE AT KILLARNEY THIS WEEKEND

Wet weather excitement T

able View’s hard charging Brad Wadeley is expected to be one of the stars in the Makita Supercar events during the fourth round of the exciting Wingfield Motors Power Series at Killarney on Saturday. A former Supercar titleholder, Wadeley was back to his best form during the most recent meeting when he won the first race on a track that was still difficult to navigate after earlier showers. His opposition on Saturday is going to come from drivers such as veteran Richard Schreuder, as well as current championship leader Nick Adcock, who has the advantage of years of international experience, often in poor weather conditions. While the inclement weather that has been plaguing the Cape will hopefully have moved along the coast by the weekend, if it hasn’t, the driving is going to prove particularly interesting. A wet surface can be relied on to produce a spectacular contest that will be much appreciated by discerning spectators protected from the rain by their brollies and waterproof boots. There are always surprises and, while spectators might be treated, it is not every competitor’s cup of tea.

With talk of entries from 18-year-old newcomer Jonathan Aberdien, whose father Chris was an Audi works driver in the heady days of exhaust popping turbochargers, it will be interesting to see how the youngster copes with the conditions. Then there’s Bellville’s charismatic current national champion Kosie Weyers, who is somewhat surprisingly going to be seen in a low key class C car in the Jive GTi Challenge events. His presence alone will ensure this category becomes even more of a headline attraction. While the big Masters V8’s will miss joint Gold class leader Craig Jarvis who is campaigning in Europe, there could be a threat from Charles Arton who was in fine form during the recent Jaguar Simola Knysna Hill Climb. However, with points awarded separately for performances in the Gold and Silver classes, Franco Donadio leads the Silver classification, with reigning champion Marcel Angel and Jarvis pegged level in the premier Gold title chase. A number of other categories are being catered for during the 18 race all-day meeting, including Midas Clubman cars, Big Foot Express Sports and GT cars.

Cape’s top football teams to lock horns LIAM MOSES @liamcpt

Cash and glory will be up for grabs when Cape Town’s best under-23 football sides face off in the Arising Stars tournament this weekend The annual competition, hosted by Kenpark United, offers R10 000 in prize money and a year of bragging rights to the winners. A total of 24 sides will vie for the spoils in this edition of the tournament, with 14 National First Division (NFD), ABC Motsepe League and SAB League teams automatically qualifying and 10 through gruelling play-off rounds, which saw 30 teams eliminated. As expected, this year’s field will be strong. Teams from the Cape Town Tygerberg, Northern Suburbs, Mitchell’s Plain, South Peninsula and Cape District local football associations will participate. Group A will see Morgenster United, Woodlands United, Salt River Blackpool and Retreat FC face off for two spots in the second round. In Group B Milano United, Liverpool Portlands, Battswood and FC Tafelzucht will lock horns. Crystal Palace, Bayhill United, Ikapa Sporting and Bishop Lavis United will make up Group C, while in Group D, Cedar United, Leeds Lentegeur, Heath Athletic and Sunningdale FC will do battle. Hosts club Kenpark United will have to fight their way past Westridge FC, FC

Orient and Rockafellas FC in Group E. Group F features Glendene United, Juventus, Riverside Rangers and Greenwood Athletic. The professional sides in the tournament can be expected to dominate the tournament and most will see their way through to the last 16. Manenberg’s Crystal Palace compete in the ABC Motsepe League (Safa Second Division), along with Salt River Blackpool and Glendene – all three fall into the favourites pile for this tournament. Palace’s senior team usually play a fastpaced, attacking brand of football and the under-23s will trouble opposition defences if they replicate this. Glendene’s first team is usually packed with youngsters, regardless of the tournament, and that high-level experience could give the defending champions an edge. Milano United will undoubtedly be a handful as well. While none of the side’s NFD players will turn out at the tournament, the ABC Motsepe side is packed with more than enough quality to challenge for the title. Woodlands United, last season’s Mitchell’s Plain LFA Super League winners, and Ikapa Sporting could be capable of causing upsets. The tournament will kick-off on Saturday 14 June and run until Monday 16 June. All games will be played at Stephen Reagon Sports Complex in Westridge, Mitchell’s Plain from 09:00 to 16:00 daily.

Teams from the Cape Town Tygerberg, Northern Suburbs, Mitchell’s Plain, South Peninsula and Cape District local football associations will par ticipate.

Table View’s Brad Wadeley is one of the favourites in Saturday’s Makita Supercar races at Killarney.
