) Delft band let down by organisers

Low blow for big band gig GARY VAN DYK

The Delft Big Band is feeling the downbeat after a raw deal from a national music conference.

There was more than reading to be enjoyed at the annual InterDistrict Reading Competition that was held in Elsies River. Emile Jansen and his HealTheHood crew were also on hand to show off some of their slick moves on the dancefloor and talk to the children about how positive hiphop and rap can also inspire them. Here JoliX does one of his crazy handstands during the performance. More about the com petition on Page 5.Photo: Gary van Dyk

In the TygerBurger of 29 August (Big future for Delft band) we reported on how this acclaimed music project had been invited to the Moshito Exhibition in Johannesburg at the beginning of September. Unfortunately music director of the group Ian Smith is very disappointed with organisers after he was forced to pull out, and a group from Riebeeck Kasteel were left stranded waiting for their transport to the festival, and then told their trip was off. Smith said that he was approached by a representative of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), William Masemola, and told that the big band was one of three groups from the Western Cape chosen to represent the region at the conference. “At a meeting on 20 July what was agreed upon albeit somewhat reluctantly by the artists is that they would perform free of charge, and that between Moshito and DCAS they would provide transport, accommodation, meals and allowance for meals on the trip,” said Smith.

“Also and most importantly a strongly motivated letter from the department emphasising the educational value of the trip. This for the school principals to release some of the school-going musicians. “In the middle of August we received confirmation that the trip was on, and we thought that everything was sorted but that was the start of our troubles.” There was silence from the organisers for the next two weeks and when Ian eventually managed to contact them he found out that Masemola had been booked off sick, and that his senior, Lynsey Jephta would take over in his absence. What followed is a tale of errors and what Smith feels was disrespectful to the musicians who were looking forward to the trip. “The first bombshell came on 22 August when we were told that they are still trying to organise transport. By the next week there was still no news about the bus, no itenary for the tour, no money for meals, and we were called to a meeting to ask how we can assist. “Worse was to follow when at the end of August we were told by Masemola that sponsorship of R25 000 had been secured, but the quote for the bus was R30 000, can we pay the extra R5 000? . Artists feel angry, exploited . From page 1. “I could not believe that in a sense we were being asked to pay to play on a free gig, but I still felt committed to the project,” he says. The last proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back for Smith was when he looked at the Moshita website and saw that the band was only scheduled to play for one hour on the Thursday of the conference. “Over a five day trip and under these conditions with too many unknowns this trip was starting to look like exploitation, or at the least a lack of respect for the artists and this coming from two organisations mandated to improve the standing of music and musicians in our society. “On Sunday 2 September I informed Masemola of our decision to withdraw from the event, but how do you recover from the collateral damage? “There has been a loss of income both for

myself and band members, I saw fit to turn down three gigs for myself and one for the Delft band during this period. “Most of all there is the disappointment that we could not showcase what is arguably one of the top big bands in SA.” . For the other two bands from the Western Cape matters were even worse when they were phoned on the day of their departure (on their way to meet up with the “buses”). The Stellenzicht Youth Band, and the Steelband from Riebeeck Kasteel were called at 11:00 to say the trip was off due to financial reasons. David Wickham of the steelband project said that he had to face 15 enormously disappointed and angry band members. . At the time of going to press there was no reply from the DCAS, or Moshito organisers.

“The design is driven by these principles and feeds the other disciplines that will in turn convert this design into a reality. “We need facilities like this in predominantly poor communities in order for residents to gain a sense of self-worth and to tangibly see improvements and upgrades in their neighbourhoods,” said Councillor Gqada. Local ward councillor Nas Abrahams was very excited about the project and stressed the need for the community to take ownership once it is completed. “This is part of the major integrated housing project that will be happening here, but people must take note that it is not going to be fenced in,” he said, adding “it must be protected at all times.” The project is expected to be completed by April 2013.

The park will complement the new housing development in the area to provide a safe, quality public space for families to interact, have fun and play sport, both formally and informally. “Family Recreation Centres are being selected as projects for implementation because of the informality of the activities that take place within them,” continued Gqada. “If cleverly designed, the centre can integrate formal sporting codes with informal recreation and sporting activities to provide community facilities that cater for a host of age groups. “Solid design principles and ‘out-of-thebox’ thinking are therefore imperative during the design phase. This will be achieved through the landscape architect playing an integral role as the lead designer on projects of this nature.

On Monday the City of Cape Town hosted the sod turning for the Valhalla Park Family Recreation Centre that could see similar facilities erected across the peninsula. At the ceremony Tandeka Gqada the mayoral committee member for community services explained that the project was a pilot project by the Community Services Directorate with the Departments of Sport, Recreation and Amenities and City Parks managing the centre as an integrated facility. “The Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department partnered with the Spatial Planning and Urban Design Department to undertake the design, management and implementation of this facility. “This R32 million project will include the construction of a full-size synthetic soccer pitch, a clubhouse and community facility, a network of pathways and landscaped areas through the park, a BMX track built as part of a detention pond, playground areas, outdoor gym areas, a spray park, a change room and ablution facilities, a flatlet for a caretaker, outdoor ‘reading rooms’ for community interaction with library activities, two minisoccer pitches, two multi-purpose courts, and a multitude of landscape architecture features,” she said. An interesting feature of the development is the spray park which is a facility that allows for aquatic recreation whilst being more accessible to a range of age groups, including the physically challenged. It is designed as a “zero-depth” facility that reduces the risk of drowning and comprises sprinklers and nozzles which create a fun environment for play and interaction.

Selfone en juweliersware is by hom gevind.

Reading can take you anywhere in life GARY VAN DYK

Readers were ruling the roost in Elsies River last week. Eskom Western Province in partnership with the Library Services of the City of Cape Town hosted their annual reading competition at the Civic Hall in Halt Road, where readers from primary schools across the peninsula gathered to showcase their reading skills. The purpose of the reading competition is to create a passion for reading and boost the low literacy levels amongst learners. Through the competition Eskom would like to establish a culture of reading, to stimulate learner’s interest in science and broaden their knowledge. The theme of this year’s reading piece was all about Eskom and the environment, and they competed in three language categories, Xhosa,

English and Afrikaans. The learners are also tested on their reading ability, comprehension and spelling. These learners were the winners in the district finals where approximately 3 000 learners participated and which served as the preliminaries to the Inter-District Competition. “Eskom takes pride in partnering with the libraries on this campaign,” explained general manager, Alwie Lester. “Through this initiative we aim to contribute to the future leaders of our country. Reading is crucial to any child’s development and we have to inculcate a love for reading in our children.” Guest speaker at the event was Danny Brown, a former councillor in the area, who is still passionate about reading. He also added a touch of the funny side of life as he recalled his youth

and discovering the joys of reading. “In this modern world children must not forget the joy that reading can bring to you, and the education,” he said. “I started out reading comics, and those picture story books, but the real joy was discovering those cowboy novels. I still get excited thinking about reading about those gunfights and battles of those heroes and my mind had its own pictures of those adventures. “It does not matter what your circumstances are, books can take you into another world, and inspire you to become a part of that world. “If you continue to read your education becomes more that just going to school, your mind becomes a tool that you can use in every part of your life,” he said. Local councillor Chris Jordaan is also playing his part and will be donating 10 more computers for libraries in the area.

In the Xhosa category the winners were, (from left) Amanda Voyi, from Ukhanyo Primary in Masiphu melele in second place, Sisanda Sigijimi from Bongolethu Primary in Brown’s Farm in first place, and Sibongiseni Khaba from Aberdare Primary in Delft in third place. GARY VAN DYK

Some superb voices from Delft brought a nation to tears on SA’s Got Talent last week. When the New Edition Gospel Group stepped onto the stage for their audition for the popular e.tv programme, the audience did not know what to expect – then they started singing. From the start you could see that judge Shado Twala was in awe, and as those voices grew she could not hold back the tears. Twala was not the only one in awe, as the cameras scanned the faces of the audience you could see that their sound was touching every heart in that auditorium. There was no doubt that this group had the talent that the rest of South Africa should be experiencing, and when they got those three nods from the judges the celebration from the group was testimony to their hard work over the years. They were still celebrating when TygerBurger caught up with them during a rehearsal last week, but they are determined to prove themselves to the world in the next rounds of the competition. “There is still a lot of hard work ahead, and we want to be there at

such a lot of good that can come from Delft.” Witbooi added that the group has been in existence since 2000

will never lose sight of our major aim to take young lives away from the crime and drugs that destroy this community. “It is not just about the music but through dedication to the music we teach young people to make the right choices for themselves.” Group member Valentina Fisher, said that at the audition they knew that they would have to perform at their best to impress the judges. “People have always complimented us on our sound,” she said. “This time around we knew that we had to show the world how the spirit could move us in our music, and we have talent that can impress the rest of the country. “When we finished our song, we were overwhelmed by the response and then there were some tense moments as we waited for the judges to decide. “Shado was breaking down from what we did, and Ian (von Memerty) agreed with her. It was only Kabelo that seemed a bit hesitant, but then he just smiled and gave us that yes. That’s when some of us started crying,” she laughs. The group then started their rehearsals and you can get a taste of that talent on our website. Witbooi can be contacted on 076 363 0336.

Schools get Tuffy in the trash battle GARY VAN DYK

Local schools are taking on the challenge to get tough with trash! Last week the City of Cape Town’s WasteWise programme signed a sponsorship agreement with Tuffy Bags to encourage schools to take up the battle against trash in their communities. The sponsorship will provide free bags for school cleanup events to some 30 schools participating in the WasteWise Eco-Schools project across the Cape metropole area. On Thursday last week the agreement was signed at Oval North Secondary School in Mitchells Plain where principal Na-eem Cassiem spoke about the need to encourage learners in all communities to become aware of their environment and the greening of communities. “This sponsorship encourages our learners in all communities that they must become responsible citizens in keeping communities clean,” he said. “We are a technical high school where we are hoping to produce the engineers and technicians of the future, but they must be inspired by their surroundings. “The blue skies, greenery and flowers must inspire them to what they want to achieve in their work one day. We have already started that process at this school where our eco-club is taking responsibility for their surroundings and influencing the whole school to be part of that process. “We started a garden where it was difficult at first but we kept on, eventually getting the community around the school involved by giving them various cuttings and plants to grow at home. “We must teach our children that they must not be deterred by the poverty from which they come, but the future where they are going.” Marketing director of Tuffy Brands, Rory Murray added that this project was part of the company’s strategy of getting people to believe that rubbish has value. Contact Rodney Leak who is the co-ordinator of the project on 082 408 8259.

Dancing off to the USA GARY VAN DYK

A group of Belhar dancers want their moves to minister in America. D4C (Disciples for Christ) is a spiritual dance group that started a few years ago and impressed audiences at various concerts and churches, and now they are hoping to inspire audiences in America. Aubrey Booi said that the group was started to inspire youth in the area to show them how dance could be a way of escaping the negative influences in their neighbourhoods. “Our group is not just about dance,” he said. “We see our dancing as a form of ministry and we are still growing as more people become interested in what we are doing.” He pointed out that earlier this year their church had some visitors from Texas in the USA who were very impressed with what they were doing in the community. “We were privileged to minister to them and they felt so blessed to see us dancing that they invited us to America for some festivals next year. “This will be happening in June next year, where we will be touring for three weeks. We are very happy with this invitation but while our expenses in the country will be covered we have to raise our own finances for our tickets to America. “We know it is going to be hard work, but we are determined to go there and represent our country,” he said. The group is planning some fundraisers starting with a High Tea that will be held on Saturday (22 September) at the Belhar Baptist Church from 14:00. Tickets for this function are R50. Their first bigger function will be held on Sunday 14 October when they will be hosting a gospel concert featuring acts like Gerty Ryan, Keino Snyders and Michael Ashley.

“Ek is baie, baie dankbaar vir my gehoor. Wanneer ek ’n vertoning bymekaarsit of voorberei, is my fokus in die eerste plek altyd op hulle – en ek probeer hulle altyd behandel op die manier wat ek graag behandel sou word as ’n gehoorlid.” 2. Jy het jouself al telkemale herskep en sodoende nuwe aanhangers bygekry. Was jy nooit bang dat jy jou bestaande gehoor sal vervreem nie? “Ek het altyd gehoop as ek selfs my foute met integriteit maak, ek nie my gehoor sal verloor nie.” 3.

See city at night by open bus The warmer weather has arrived and not only has it heralded earlier sunrises and longer days but it also brings with it the re-opening of the City Sightseeing Night Tour – the only one of its kind in South Africa. Cape Town is beautiful by day, and absolutely magical on a warm summers night, as the stars light your way through the Mother City with Table Mountain lit up as a spectacular back drop. The Night Tour will run from Thursday 20 September to Monday 6 May 2013. The bus departs from the Two Oceans Aquarium at the V&A Waterfront daily at 18:00 until 14 March and at 17:30 for the rest of the season, taking people past all the best night attractions in the Mother City. The bus stops at Signal Hill to watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean. Take along a picnic basket with snacks and sundowners. The total length of the tour is three hours. City Sightseeing offers a range of other exciting tours on their world famous open-top bus including a one day Red City Tour and a Blue Mini Peninsula tour, which includes a free Wine Tour of Constantia Valley, and a Canal Cruise through the V&A Waterfront. Visitors who purchase a two-day ticket, combining the Red City Tour and the Blue Mini Peninsula Tour, will also receive a free ticket for the Night Tour. Tickets for the Night Tours cost R100. The two-day tickets cost R220 online or R250 from the ticket office. For more information, dial 021 511 6000 or visit www.citysightseeing.co.za. WIN! WIN! WIN! . Six TygerBurger readers can each win double tickets for the Cape Town City Sightseeing Night Tour. SMS the word “Night” to 45527 before Wednesday 26 September. SMSes cost R1,50.

Audience blown away by vocals LOUISA STEYL

Vuvu and The Glitter Boyz, a new cabaret act, are hoping to set Cape Town stages alight with their show stopping performances. The group is made up of Vuvu Kumalo, Danny-J and Co-B, who all have impressive resumes as solo artists in their own right. “We started about two months ago,” says Donovan Nolan, the group’s manager. Since then they have already performed together a few times, like at The Kuils River Women’s Day Festival and at their favourite venue: Valerie’s Jazz Café. “We are basically kicking off,” Donovan says. “It’s a cabaret dancing act,” Vuvu says, describing what they do. Vuvu and the Glitter Boyz perform favourite songs by legends like Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Luther Vandross and Beyonce. “We are actually a Motown group,” she says. Co-B adds: “People can expect a jam-packed, full on, vocal show.” “We want to have the crowd see an energetic show,” he says, adding: “We want people to be blown away by our vocals.” The group says people who have seen their shows, say they like the fact that they cater for people of any age. When Co-B isn’t on stage, he is also responsible for the trio’s costumes, while Danny sees to their choreography. The group are making themselves available for charity or fundraising shows and want to encourage people to contact them regarding these events. You can catch the group perform on Saturday 6 October when they do a Cabaret and Soul evening at Villa Via Hotel and Spa. For more information or to book, call 083 507 9777 or 083 727 2916. You can join their Facebook group to keep up to date with what they are doing. For more information about the Vuvu and The Glitter Boyz, or to book them, email dnolan.stardust@yahoo.com.

101 tons of fun to be had at expo PROMOTION

Is it your house? Your car? Your pension fund or your share portfolio? It’s none of these really. Your most valuable asset is you and your ability to earn an income during your working career. But have you ever stopped to think about what would happen if you suddenly lost your ability to earn an income, and you could no longer work because you were disabled, whether it was temporary or permanent? How would you pay your bond, school fees, groceries, car instalments? How would you maintain your lifestyle if your income was reduced or stopped completely?

How can you protect your income? Many South Africans protect their families and their assets with life cover, but don’t protect themselves and their lifestyles against cancer or a heart attack. But with GREENLIGHT Disability Cover from Old Mutual, we make sure that your life continues and your income is secured. Imagine for example how much it would help if you were paid out a lump sum if you fractured your arm and couldn’t work? Our philosophy is to take care of the risks so that you

Learners are running for peace GARY VAN DYK

You can play your part for peace in the community – by running! That is the call coming from Bishop Lavis Primary, one of the oldest schools in the area, who will be putting their plan into action with a Peace Run on Saturday 27 October. Principal Steven Less, pointed out that in two years’ time they will be celebrating their 60th anniversary and that this will be the start of initiatives at the school to celebrate the rich legacy of the school in the area. “Many people do not realise it but this school has produced some prominent members of society in its history ranging from businessmen, political leaders, educators, as well as doctors, dentists and artisans over the years,” he said. “In recent years that positive spirit in the community has been damaged by the tide of crime, gangsterism and drug abuse, which in turn affected the children of the area. “We feel that the time has come to make the community aware of the legacy of positivity that came from this school and how everybody has a part to play in restoring that to the community.” The school in partnership with sport trainer, Brian Daniels, has launched an initiative in the community of Bishop Lavis and surroundings to address the challenges that youth are facing with violence, gangsterism and substance abuse. Kervin Bosman from the school is

that violence is not the answer and that there is a better way to succeed in life. “Sports is a powerful tool and therefore we decided that with street running more can be involved. This is an event by the community for the community and we want to ensure that it takes place in

Belhar troef SK/Walmer SAREL BURGER

Die program (tuisspan eerste) is: Belhart t UK, Tygerberg t Villager, NNK t Collegians, Bellville t Brackenfell, Hands & Heart t Goodwood, Pniël Villagers t Kuilsrivier.

Hospitality for United The Bishop Lavis Cricket Club will play host to the United CC of Graaff Reinette this coming long weekend. In previous years the Bishop Lavis CC toured the Karoo district as part of their pre-season programme and according to club chairman, Joseph Fondling, the boys of Bishop Lavis will play host this year. “We have a long standing relationship with the United CC and we are looking forward to afford them some of Cape Town’s hospitality,”

Fondling said. The teams will play two 45-over matches on Saturday and Sunday at Lavis Park with play starting at 10:00 on both days. Part of the programme for the weekend will include a karaoke on Saturday 22 September starting at 20:00 in the Major Hall at the Bishop Lavis Sports complex. For more information please contact Joseph Fondling on 082 420 2996.

Rangers are still on form THOMAS CAROLUS

Riverside Rangers continued with their good start to their league campaign when they moved into top position on the Northern Surburbs Football Assocation Super league table after defeating Matroosfontein 4-0 at Avonwood Park on Sunday. Darryll Jacobs (2), Glayton Julies and Bruce Louw netted for the home team.

Riverside Rangers are leading the log with 56 points, while Trinitarians have 55 points in the second position. The team from Avonwood started brightly and looked comfortable on the ball, dominating the opening exchanges with some neat passing. But, despite an abundance of possession they failed to capitalise on numerous goal-scoring opportunities as the visitors fought well to contain their host.

Matroosfontein’s commitment from the first whistle was commendable as they pressured Riverside Rangers all over the park restricting their play, while attacking on the counter with pace. The home defence was solid all afternoon and keeper Joas Jacobs was a virtual spectator in the second-half as the dangerous Matroosfontein strikers were hardly given a sniff at at goal from Rangers’ defenders.
