Paddlers gave their all in the recent PRIMI Naish Downwinder.

Decent winds open up race for real challenge The third race in the 10-race series of the PRIMI Naish Downwinder finally saw some decent wind with 20 to 30 knots fanning the 10 km course from Milnerton to Big Bay recently. Dylan Frick wins often, but strong wind downwinds have not always been a favourite of his, so the race was wide open. The youngsters, Joshua Robertson and Ethan Koopmans have been getting stronger and fitter with every race and with the higher winds, local downwind legend and course record holder, Ivan van Vuuren finally made an appearance as well. Everyone was super excited as the white-caps were whipping past the start area at Milnerton Lighthouse – the wind has been on, (20-40knots) and this really is downwind heaven! The first start, which sets off 10 minutes earlier for the slightly slower downwind paddlers, saw the only set of the day push through on the start-whistle taking out pretty much the entire field – carnage and a very poor start for Brigette van Aswegen who had a lot of catching up to do. Wade Keet seemed to escape intact and got a fine start. Dylan pretty much always nails the

start but this time Tom King who has been improving in leaps and bounds, took a tight inside line and kept up. Ethan and Chris had to come from behind and eventually snuck past Dylan and the rest of the gang to race for the finish. Ethan got one over Chris to celebrate his first-ever downwind win by 22 seconds. Dylan held onto third with Greg Bertish nailing fourth and Tom King in fifth. In the women’s division, Brigette van Aswegen managed to catch up to young Mishka Steyn, but Mishka put the hammer down and took a convincing win this time round – these two women are swapping out wins every week. Patiricia Kohrs made another welcome return and just snuck past Monika Wohlgemuth in the Ladies’ Master division. Ivan Van Vuuren was hoping for a little more wind but still managed to take second in the masters’ ahead of Pietro Muscas with Peter Petersen taking out the win. Most improved paddler on the handicap system was won by Ethan Koopmans with Grant Donald and Tom King in second and third. Ethans time of 45.02 is just three minutes shy of the course record which was set in higher windspeeds.

Kolfsterre: Wian Joubert en Pierre Cilliers was betrokke by ’n uitstekende vennootskap by D.F.

Sunday 3 November sees the Cape Multi Car Club once again hosting their popular Cape Classic Car Show at the Northerns-Goodwood Rugby Fields corner of De Grendal and McIntyre Streets, Parow, just off the N1. The 2013 event promises to continue the tradition of offering family entertainment at an affordable price with no fewer than 34 Classic Car and Motorcycle Clubs participating of which the Crankhandle Club shall have the largest display with 80 vehicles. Within this display will be the oldest car at the show, a 1901 Mercedes-Benz, surrounded by a selection of English cars of a bygone era such as Austin, Morris, Bentley and Rolls-Royce with the odd ArmstrongSiddeley in between. For speed enthusiasts the Western Province Motor Club will have a good turnout of racing cars with drivers in attendance, while the Cape Street Rod Club will have a selection of gleaming American-style hotrods being shown –off complete with bright metallic paint and chrome.

Perhaps one of the most unusual exhibits will be that of the Heritage Movement with a display of World War army vehicles which the public can view from close-up. All the sports car clubs such as GSM, Sunbeam, Austin-Healey, Alfa-Romeo and Ford Mustang have been allocated stands amongst many classic sedans of yesteryear. The organisers have seen fit to lay on a good deal of entertainment in the form of the Cape Field Artillery Pipes and Drums Band, Brackenfell Junior Drum Majorettes and the auction of 25 Classic Cars which should grab the petrol heads’ attention. Add to this a Miniature Car Show in the Minor Hall, a Funland providing all the popular rides and a large selection of refreshment and arts and craft stalls and both mom and junior should be satisfied. The Cape Classic Car Show takes up four rugby fields and trophies are awarded for the Best Car Club display, Best Stall, Oldest Motorcycle and Vintage Car from 1904 to 1939, etc. The big event is sponsored jointly by CAR magazine and Coca-Cola with a total of 800 vehicles making-up the exhibition.
