Boy saves sister from flames ANDRÉ BAKKES
Eleven-year-old Tristan Syair from Milnerton was the hero of a tragic tale last week Sunday when his family’s house went up in flames. Tristan braved the scorching fire and suffocating smoke while he saved his sixmonth-old sister, Dominic, from her room. According to his mother, Karen, Tristan was the only person who was thinking clearly amid the chaos. “He realised Dominic wasn’t outside with them, so he jumped through the window and managed to get her out of the house before it was too late,” says Karen. It was just an ordinary Sunday morning for Karen, her boyfriend Bruno, and her children, Aditya (13), Tristan and Dominic. “I made breakfast for the children and then I went to my room to get dressed,” recalls Karen. Moments later the Syairs’ house started filling up with smoke. “Everything happened so fast! I ran to the front door with the children, but it was locked and we couldn’t get out. I ran back to the room and grabbed the car keys, but in the meantime the children jumped out of the window. There was thick, black smoke everywhere and I was very confused,” she continues. Karen and her children escaped without sustaining any injuries, but Bruno received cut wounds on his back. A part of the house exploded moments after he jumped out through the window. And so it transpired that the family stood by helplessly while all their earthly possessions were quickly consumed. In her panic, Karen wanted to go to her

mother’s house to get another hosepipe, but it was all for nought. The fire brigade was, however, able to save parts of the house thanks to their rapid response. The family slept in a hotel for a few evenings, but they have now returned to the house, because one of the rooms was not too badly damaged in the fire. Says Karen: “There is of course no water or electricity and there is soot everywhere. It also smells terrible.” It has obviously been quite an ordeal for
the family. A few days after the incident Karen “collapsed”, but she has no medical aid and has not yet gone to the doctor. Some well-wishers, including Milnerton Primary School, have helped them pull through by donating school clothing and books to the two brothers. They are still in desperate need of assistance in whichever way, so anyone who can help must contact Karen on 071 071 2681. She concludes, “God wanted us to live, so I’m not worrying about anything else!”
