Shark encounters along the local coastline seem to be on the rise with several incidents reported over the last month. After a tweet about a possible great white shark sighting at the Seli 1 wreck last week, TygerBurger questioned several water users about the presence of these sharks in the waters of Bloubergstrand and Melkbosstrand. A local water safety officer, Derrick Frazer, who is involved with many ocean events in the area, confirms the presence of one specific great white shark off Bloubergstrand. “On 26 April I had to pull two

swimmers who were trying to complete the swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand from the water when I noticed a shark. That was 1,5km from the beach,” Frazer says. He says it is rumoured there are two female great white sharks cruising the water but others speculate that it might be the same shark that has been periodically seen over the last two years. “They are seasonal and travel up to Mozambique at this time of the year. These sharks can travel up to 1 000km a day which means the shark you saw today can be gone tomorrow,” he says. He had recently researched the occurrence of sharks on the Atlantic side of Cape Town. “I did quite a bit of research into

this. The last recorded shark incident was towards Clifton’s side and that was 40 years ago.” Frazer says the risk of sharks is always a factor. “Sharks will always be there. It is part of the risk of being in the ocean, but it is still much riskier driving to the beach,” he says. The sighting at the Seli wreck is however noteworthy as the shark was seen on the coastal side of the ship which is stranded 800m from the beach. The Wreck, as the area is known among locals, is a favourite spot for stand up paddlers, kiteboarders and surfers. Caryn Jones from Durbanville was the person who reported the shark sighting to Sharkspotters last Tuesday.

“We were sitting on the beach to the right of the wreck when I saw this substantially big fin standing out of the water. It moved like I would imagine a shark would. “It was moving towards the beach and when the waves came up you could see the shape through the water,” Jones says. She judged the animal to be about 100m from the beach. “We were there for about an hour and a half and watched it kind of patrolling along the shore. It disappeared about 15 minutes before we left. It was difficult to judge the size but it was big, bigger than a seal or anything else I have seen before.” She says at the time there were surfers and stand up paddlers in the water closer to the wreck.

“The water wasn’t very cold that day, I remember thinking that it wasn’t as cold as I would imagine it to be,” she says. Stand up paddler Michelle Fourie from Melkbosstrand spotted two sharks in one week recently, also at The Wreck. “We were chased out of the water by a shark about two months ago. A whole bunch of us spotted the shark. It was about 20m away. It didn’t come toward us or follow us. We didn’t feel threatened that it was there to eat us,” Fourie says. Fourie, who has been surfing for 14 years and has almost never seen a shark up close, says it is strange to suddenly experience two shark sightings less than a week apart. . To page 2.

One dead in another horrific N7 crash ANDRÉ BAKKES

Yet another serious accident occurred on the N7 as it crosses over the N1 highway this weekend. This time one person died and two others were seriously injured when the driver of a Peugot lost control of the vehicle before it careened, spun and rolled over the centre island and then hit the barrier walls of the N7. The vehicle eventually came to a standstill against the bridge barrier

of the opposite lane. The vehicle was travelling from Goodwood towards Milnerton on Friday night at the time of the horrific accident. ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene and found what was left of a light motor vehicle up against the armco barrier. Derrick Banks, ER24 spokesperson, elaborates: “The three occupants were found lying on the road near to the vehicle. The one occupant had sustained serious fatal injuries and was declared deceased. The other two patients, one female

and one male had sustained serious head and neck injuries. Advanced Life Support intervention was performed on them before they were transported to a nearby hospital for further medical intervention.” This is apparently the third serious accident in exactly the same spot in recent months. A few weeks ago a passenger was flung from a Kombi and landed on the N1. According to another ER24 spokesperson, Vanessa Jackson, the Thursday saw another accident in the same vicinity. She elaborates: “A bakkie carry-

ing vegetables for the market, with two occupants in the front cabin, left the N7 while travelling in the direction of Malmesbury, just before the N1 split. The bakkie then crashed into a precast concrete wall, approximately 50 metres from the road.” She says that paramedics expected the occupants to have sustained severe injuries due to the extensive damage to the single cab bakkie, but they found the two men were in a stable condition. “The driver had a broken arm and what appeared to be a slight

head injury, and he was treated for his pain by the Advanced Life Support paramedic. The passenger was treated for multiple deep cuts and bruises and both men were taken by ambulance to Tygerberg Hospital,” adds Jackson. ER24’s Andre Visser says that the N7 is a “complicated” road, since it goes right past informal settlements and then turns into a highway. “We react to an accident scene on the N7 at the very least once every two weeks and usually these are serious incidents. Pedestrians must be careful,” he says.

Spotted shark ‘could be a great white’ . From page 1. “I am not a fundi, but one definitely looked like a great white about 3m long. I could see the grey colouring when the fin broke the water. The other shark was a different species and about 2,5m big.” She says they experienced a lot of fish activity at the wreck this time last year. “It seems there are a lot more fish inland due to the natural reef that the wreck has created and it could be that the sharks are feeding off these,” she says. “So we are keeping our eyes peeled. Not that it keeps us out of the water but we are aware of them,” she says. Bodyboarder Eugene Meyer from Melkbosstrand says he and about 10 fellow bodyboarders left the water at Derdesteen on Friday after seeing a shark at around 13:30. “I saw the two fins about 5m from me and then they disappeared. I caught a wave to the middle bank where it is shallower. After a couple of minutes I paddled back out and then there was a splash in the water right next to one of my friends,” Meyer said, adding that the dorsal fins were about 1,5m apart. Meyer, a provincial bodyboarder has been surfing for the last 10 years and was best friends with David Lilienfeld (20) who died following a great white attack at Kogel Bay along the False Bay coast last month. “We are more aware of the signs of sharks in the water after what happened to David. We suspect this shark was a bronzie but you can never be sure,” he says. He says there was a lot of fish, birds and seal activity in the water at the time. Alison Kock from Sharkspotters says it is difficult to say whether there has been an increase in white shark activity along the Atlantic seaboard given the lack of available research information. “We receive a number of shark sightings from the Atlantic seaboard side.

“Most of the time these turn out to be sunfish, seals or dolphins which have been mistaken for sharks. Sometimes a basking shark, and most recently a whale shark was mistaken for a white shark. “We have been able to confirm with photographs and reliable identification that it is indeed a white shark on few occasions. It’s not possible to comment on whether there has been an increase or not based on this information,” Kock explains. She says the shark Jones saw sounds like a great white. “The two species it could possibly be based on the size (over 3m), are either a great white or a basking shark (basking sharks are filter feeders observed in the area on occasion). “If it were smaller it could also have been a bronze whaler shark. However, based on its behaviour (swimming parallel to shore backwards and forwards for almost 40 minutes) and size it was more than likely a white shark.” She adds great white sharks certainly are present in the area. “How often they travel through the area we have yet to find out.” She says the same shark safety rules apply: high bird, fish or dolphin activity are signs that baitfish are abundant and there is an increased possibility of sharks being around; stay in groups and do not venture too far out. “People should also always be aware of the environment and ask locals like shark spotters (if in the area), law enforcement, life-savers and local surfers or swimmers for information on any recent shark activity. Kock says that for the first time ever scientists are collecting movement information of great whites on the West Coast of South Africa, including the Atlantic seaboard side.

Interchanges hubs of expansion Sites at the Bayside Shopping Mall and Du Noon are among 25 public transport interchanges that will be upgraded and expanded over the next five years. The project which will focus on 25 interchanges, is to accommodate the growth in demand for access and mobility across the city. The total cost of this project is estimated at R321 million. This improvement programme forms part of the City of Cape Town’s mobility strategy, which supports the development of a balanced transport system. It focuses on all elements of Cape Town’s transport system which include rail, bus, taxi, cycling, pedestrians, parking management, freight, traffic management, information and data. “Our proposed upgrades will ensure that transport is accessible DESIREÉ RORKE

Residents from Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Durbanville are said to be the happiest with services rendered by the City of Cape Town. This is indicated by the most recent community satisfaction survey conducted by the city – the results were released in May. This survey has been conducted since 2008, and measures the perception of residents toward service delivery, on a scale of poor, fair, good, very good or excellent. “The perception survey measures in which areas the city is doing well so that we can continue our performance, and where possible, enhance levels of service delivery.

and inclusive, providing links between the communities and employment, education, health, community services and other services. Additionally, we want to ensure that they become interesting social spaces and lively parts of the city,” says Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater. The city currently has over 213 public interchanges of different sizes and with different functions. These facilities are located along the rail and road based public transport network where commuters can change between different types of transportation. In this regard, an interchange is defined as a place where transport services meet. “Over 54 percent of our commuters depend on public transport, whether by road or trains. As a result, most of the public transport interchanges are overcrowded due to

growth in demand over the past years. They need to be expanded urgently,” says Herron. The 25 projects include park-andride facilities at five interchanges and are in various stages of development across the city. A number of them are currently in design, tender and under construction. “In Du Noon the focus is on upgrading the current public transport facility in order to create a transfer station and interface that will accommodate current public transport users and operators and the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) services,” Herron says. He said the new facility at Bayside will be constructed with a similar purpose as that of the Du Noon interchange. “Unfortunately, further details, such as site maps will only be available at a later stage as the supply chain management procedures and

process to acquire service providers and specialists to assist in the design and construction of the facilities are still in process,” Herron adds. Other interchanges that will be upgraded are the Cape Town CBD, Mitchells Plain, Lentegeur, Retreat, Wynberg, Bellville and Nyanga. New interchange projects have been scheduled for Kuyasa, Somerset West, Imizamo Yethu, Masiphumelele, Nomzamo, Samora Machel, Scottsdene, Wallacedene, Makhaza, Nolungile, Macassar, Durbanville, and Vrygrond. Precinct developments include the provision of signage, CCTV and surveillance facilities, lighting, landscaping, integration of trading facilities, and health facilities. “We are working towards an integrated transport network for the city where the various modes con-

City services get public thumbsup It also measures areas in which the city can improve. The information that the survey provides is invaluable as it assists us to strategically identify and work to meet the needs of all our citizens,” says mayco member for corporate services, Demitri Qually. The survey was conducted by TNS, to according to Qually, ensure scientific correctness and include a representative sample across the city. Three thousand face-to-face interviews were conducted with residents and 700 telephonic interviews

with businesses in the city. It also included five focus groups with residents to probe and investigate issues in depth. Eighty percent of the residents in the northern district, which includes Brackenfell, Kraaifontein and Durbanville, rated the city’s overall performance as good, very good, or excellent. This was a slight dip from last year’s 84 percent in the same area. The western districts of Milnerton, Table View and Melkbosstrand reflected a 67 percent satisfaction, followed by the southern district

with 65 percent. Bellville and Boston as part of the Tygerberg district scored 62 percent, and residents of Mitchells Plain, who are less satisfied, 56 percent. According to Qually these overall performance trends over the last five years have been positive and represent a general upward trend in residents’ satisfaction. Overall, 63 percent of residents in the whole of Cape Town rated its performance good, up from 62 percent last year, 57 percent in 2009/2010, 54 percent in 2008/2009

nect seamlessly in a commuter-focused way. “The provision of dignified and safe transport hubs is an essential component of an integrated transport system and the planned upgrade and development of these public transport interchanges will support our promotion and prioritisation of public transport over private car usage. “It should be noted that once the process for acquiring professional service providers and additional capacity is completed, the affected subcouncils, ward councillors and affected communities will be consulted on the design and plan for the facilities,” Herron says. He says commuter safety at these interchanges will be one of the main objectives and will be handled through the deployment of a dedicated law enforcement unit for public transport. and 50 percent in 2007/2008. He added: “In terms of residents’ and business’ interaction with the city, most scores have shown significant increases both in the shortand long-term. It is also pleasing to note that perceptions of the mayor and of senior city management in dealing with city issues have improved.” Eighty four percent of businesses said that overall, the City of Cape Town’s performance was good, very good or excellent – up from 80 percent in 2010/11. The survey furthermore indicated that essential services remain a relative area of strength, particularly water provision, sewerage, sanitation and refuse collection.

Anybody old enough to remember those wonderful, silent trolley buses that used to operate in cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg will be delighted to know that Optimal Energy plans to build a new breed of battery-powered electric buses in South Africa. The move comes after the decision to abandon the Joule, a very promising and attractive electric car. I’m afraid the odds were always stacked against the Joule. New models are expensive to build and launch because of the development costs. Then they have to compete with mass-produced cars from established manufacturers. It can be done only with a massive investment and an expensive advertising campaign to overcome the prejudice and create demand for the new vehicles. Another South African, Elon Musk, faced exactly the same challenge at his new home in California. He chose to start small and produce limited numbers of virtually hand-built sports car, the Tesla Roadster. They would be expensive but they would appeal to the wealthy. He made a deal with Lotus in the UK to supply the bodies and suspension while he provided the motors and the lithium-ion batteries. The result was a sports car that handled superbly and could silently accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under four seconds to match the performance of Porches and Ferraris. The price tag was a bit over $100 000 but they were snapped up by Hollywood Alist stars like Mat Damon, George Clooney and other environmental-

The couples that are going through to the finals are (Durbanville High) Haygun Kleinhans/ Megan Ras, Ryan Hillhouse and Yolandie Viljoen; (Curro Private) Chad Fourie/Ann Scott, Willem Bisschoff/SeulGi Min; (Tygerberg High) Eben van den Heever/Lindi Vangeveldt, Shaun Jones/Danelle Marais; (Chesterhouse) Andre Jooste/Martha Makonga, Brian Joubert/Jade Armstrong; (Settlers) Marlon Oranzie/Melissa Petersen, Rudgert Stuurman/Carmen van Wyk; (Parow High) Did not compete; (DF Malan) Gerard Van Roajen/ Ane Strydom; Corne Pauw/Saskia Stander; (Sarepta) Sesihle Mpela/Mampho Sephuhle, Kyle Arendse/Natasha Lotz; (Gardens Commercial) Joshua Tommy/ Rifgoh Jacobs, Yibanathi Jezile/ Zaidia Jephtah; (Cape Town High) Nkosinathi Xayimpi/Zithi Gcwabe, Thondray Harrison/Sinovujo Nikani; (Table View) Colby Hall/ Tamaryn Baker and Peter van der Westhuizen/ Tristan Nel; (Sea Point High) Bertus Williams/Luleka Mongo, Stanley Yonamu/Talent Mabingire. The leaders are Tygerberg (13,10 points), Chesterhouse (12,80) DF Malan (12,70), Settlers (12,50) and Sea Point (12,22). The finals are on Saturday 26 May and Sunday 27 May.

ly conscious Americans. So far more than 1 500 have been sold and a new sedan car and an SUV are on the way. They will sell at half the price of the roadster and be capable of 0 to 100 km/h in five seconds. The sports car has a range of 200 old fashioned miles and the new car will manage 300. Both Mercedes and Toyota were so impressed that they bought shares in the company. (If you want to know more check www.teslamotors.com). The big problem with electric cars is that “petrolheads” don’t like or understand them. They smell different and they don’t roar. But, make no mistake, they are the cars of the future. Optimal Energy will have a much easier time with buses. Firstly they are built in smaller numbers so the economies of scale are not so important and highly automated and expensive assembly lines should not be necessary. But the most important difference will be that no expensive advertising campaign will be necessary to sell the buses. The buyers will not be “petrolheads” with image and status problems but managers and accountants. They will look at the numbers – the carrying capacity, range and running costs. And this is where electric vehicles do well. They don’t need regular oil changes or servicing and they are ideal for stop-start journeys. They don’t have motors idling while they wait for traffic lights to change. Operators and passengers will love the new smooth, silent electric buses.

Mrs Cape Town 2012 is (middle) Suzann Botha from Plattekloof. Left is first princess Chantal Witthuhn from Kleinmond and on the right is second princess Burnedette Bekker, Brackenfell.

Mrs CT takes her crown The first official Mrs Cape Town Philanthropic Pageant was hosted at the Golden Valley Casino in Worcester on 5 May. The glittering event was a celebration of “ordinary women achieving the extra-ordinary”. The representative of Cape Town selected as Mrs Cape Town, is Suzann Botha from Plattekloof. First princess is Chantal Witthuhn from Kleinmond, and the second princess is Burnedette Bekker from Brackenfell. The finalists underwent a six week preparation period, including team building activities and assessment by the panel of judges. The judges were looking for a woman who can use her skills, network and experience

to have a positive effect in the lives of the poor and destitute. The judging criteria included confidence, grooming, leadership qualities, and a spontaneous, sophisticated personality. The newly-crowned Suzann’s objectives are to uplift her community and to initiate new projects in support of the projects of Rolemodels Foundation, an NPO registered with the department of social development. During the lead-up to the event, Suzann managed to secure R200 000 clothing from Clothing City for the underprivileged. Plans are already under way for the 2013 Mrs Cape Town pageant, which is scheduled to be hosted at Club Mykonos in Langebaan next year. Entries open on 3 January 2013.

Church has successful HIV/Aids campaign

Peer government educators with Pastor Mike Ibitoye and his wife Nene (front centre), and members from their ongregation (the Winning Life Church).

The recent Winning Life Church’s HIV/Aids campaign in Summergreens Hall was apparently a huge success. Two sisters of Albow Gardens Clinic tested the status of 42 people and 15 people were tested for diabetes. Some 17 parliament peer educators gave talks about HIV/Aids by using audio-visual equipment and seven volunteers from the City Council occupied the children with games, face painting, and other fun activities. There was even a motivational speaker who came all the way from the Eastern Cape.

The Winning Life Church provided sandwiches, juices and chicken platters. Pastor Mike Ibitoye had words of thanks for Ward Councillor Joy McCarthy for her contribution of gifts, the community of Summergreens for their wonderful support and the police, who kept an eye on events. The Winning Life Church has a service every Sunday morning in the Summergreens Hall at 10:00 and also on a Wednesday at 24 Soldier Way, Summergreens at 19:00. They also offer counselling on Tuesdays to Thursday from 12:00 to 16:00.Enquiries: Pastor Mike Ibitoye on 078 978 7816.

Pulsing plethora of pectorals There was simply too much eye candy on show to take it all in. Competitors from all over South Africa converged on GrandWest Casino to compete in the show, which organiser Joanne Goncalves describes as “absolutely fantastic”. According to her there are various smaller events in the country which all lead up to the

“echelon of fitness pageants”, of which the theme was “Masks”. Even though “fitness” was central to everything on Saturday night, there were various categories which spoke to different people. Ms Bikini is always a favourite with the men and for the women there was the Beach Body Model category. The list goes on, Muscle Mania, Mr Physique, Masters Ladies, Mr and Ms Classic, Ms Figure, Fitness Couples, and of course, Mr and Ms Fitness. The participants didn’t just walk nonchalantly up and down the stage like some pageants, however. Carefully choreographed dance moves to

Daar is 12 takke in Suid-Afrika. “Die Wes-Kaapse tak is nie die grootste in die land nie, maar dit het nietemin uitsonderlik presteer,” sê Coreejef-Brink.

Lucky couple:

Cries of joy filled the air as the winning couple of the ‘Win a wedding with FAB and TygerBurger’ competition was announced at Autumn FAB on Sunday afternoon. Melissa Klaase and her fiancé, Brendan Adams from Bellville, weekly collected seven Tyger Burgers to cut out the pictures they needed to enter. They plan on getting married in Septem ber. “Dr. Herb garden for old age home Residents of a local old age home will be enjoying some fresh home-grown produce thanks to the partnership between the Table View Lions Club and a private business. As part of their company’s social responsibility programme, three Formula 1 Hotels donated funds to Table View Lions Club to initiate a vegetable and herb garden at a local underprivileged home. The Lions selected Huis Ysterplaat, an old age home for 76 residents. On Friday 20 April some Lions members visited the home and helped spread the ferti-

liser and bone meal before planting a variety of vegetables and herbs in season. “All plants, soil, irrigation systems, were sponsored by the hotels – a very generous donation to sustain an organisation that is in need,” said president of the Table View Lions Club Liz Wilkie. “The donation was in excess of R5 000 and we thank the Formula 1 Hotel group for their generous contribution,” she added. This initiative formed part of the annual Earth Day programme to encourage the community to protect the environment.

Making Mother’s Day memorable ANDRÉ BAKKES

Two radio stations went out of their way to honour the people who make this world worthwhile: mothers.

KFM presen ters and staff made mothers at Huis Zonnekus feel special last week Thursday. Photos: André Bakkes

Heart 104.9 FM and KFM Radio hosted two separate functions leading up to Mother’s Day in Milnerton. The former organised the annual Mommy & Me Walk at Canal Walk on Saturday and the latter visited Huis Zonnekus Retirement Home on Thursday last week. The Mommy & Me Walk, which started at 08:15, consisted of two laps through the shopping centre and the undercover parking area, so the wet weather couldn’t rain on the party. Mothers, grandmothers and children had the chance to do what comes naturally to them when they had the opportunity to bond with each other during the relaxing 1,6km walk. According to Heart’s Aniqah Mayman, the turn-out was “excellent”. “We have exceeded the expected target this year! There are definitely more than 1 600 people who are participating,” she explains. There were various prizes on offer during the event, which boasted main sponsors such as Canal Walk Foundation and DStv. Mayman touches on the challenge of being a mother when she says: “I’m a mother of 20-month-old twin boys and this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life! I’ve done some crazy things in my life, but being a mother is the most difficult, but by far the most rewarding!” Of course, KFM Radio also got in on the act when they went to Huis Zonnekus during the week. They brought flowers and cake along and even sang a song to the ladies. Then the presenters and some of the management enjoyed tea with the ladies in a wonderfully jovial atmosphere. There were plenty of smiles at both events and it was made clear that mothers truly make the world go around.

Grandparents given a treat Grandparents’ Day was first declared a national holiday by US president, Jimmy Carter, in 1979. Today millions of grandchildren across the world pay tribute to their grandparents on this special day. At Milnerton Pre-Primary School there was no exception! Children and teachers have been hard at work for weeks preparing a special presentation for all grandparents at their annual Grandparents’ Day celebration. As one of the highlights of the school’s events calendar, the day is celebrated a little earlier than most. Despite the grey weather and threatening clouds, the stream of grandparents entering the school was indicative of

how many grandparents are involved in their grandchildren’s lives. For those who live far away, moms, dads and other relatives stepped in to enjoy the festivities. The children entertained their grandparents with song, dance, art and tasty treats and as the applause rang out across the school, one grandmother proudly summed up the sentiments of all by thanking the children for “spoiling” them. “We look so forward to this day each year. The children, teachers and staff put together a programme where we can show our love and appreciation for our grandparents and thank them for all they do. The children un-

derstand how blessed they are to have grandparents who are involved in their day-to-day lives and share in their growth and development,” smiles principal, Lindsay Pretorius. According to a new study from Brigham Young University, kids who are involved with their grandparents have a greater emotional concern for others outside the immediate family. The morning was concluded with a tour of the school’s playground, where young and old shared ideas of tricks and manoeuvres on the variety of play equipment. It was a proud and fun-filled morning where memories were made and loved-ones cherished.

Cops want to help keep kids warm Two police charities have made it their mission to help keep school children warm this winter. The South African Police Women’s Network and Men for Change are currently involved in the “Winter Warm Campaign”. The project involves knitting scarves for learners of a local school which must still be chosen. The scarves must be navy blue in colour, 1,2m long and 15cm wide. Any volunteers interested in joining this campaign can contact Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro on 082 499 4609. The police will welcome any donations of wool or scarves. These can be dropped off at the Table View Police Station (attention: Lieutenant Elizabeth Munro) or at the Milnerton Police Station (attention: Warrant Officer Daphne Dell).

SLICE OF LIFE

Who will protect citizens of SA? Should South Africa take a page from the Malaysian Government as far as dealing with criminals is concerned? Last week five people were arrested in connection with the abduction of a 12year-old boy in Malaysia. For this they could face execution. In South Africa where the vicious rape of women and children and the senseless murder of farmers, the elderly and the helpless hardly raises an eyebrow, many feel dragging the guilty into the street and shooting them is the right and only answer. But would this not only breed more hate and anger in the rainbow nation where the tears of the victims of crime have already smudged the once bright colours into a murky pool of despair. This week the National Treasury recommended that the South African Police Service reduce its staff members by 9 000, which could possibly lead to no more members being recruited as from 2013. Police officers are already under pressure due to insufficient numbers and resources. Service delivery protests are set to hit an all-time high this year. The people are frustrated and restless and the tension is growing. The question is now: Who will be left to fight the good fight?

Winter warmer ‘wanted’:

The tight pants of Oswin Voget, one of the contestants at the Mr & Ms Fitness SA Pageant, reckons he is a wanted man. In the world of ‘supply and demand’, it is fair to say that in Voget’s case, the demand outweighs the supply. TygerBurger tried its best to squeeze the word ‘but’ into this caption, butt there was simply no space. Photo: Carina Roux

Great police service I wish to express my grateful appreciation for the excellent service that I received from the Melkbosstrand police. On Wednesday 9 May at about 08:17 I was travelling in Otto du Plessis Drive to drop of my son at the playschool. At the three-way stop street at Otto du Plessis Drive and Charles Hoffe Drive, a white Toyota Quantum flew past the vehicles that stopped at the intersection. The vehicle drove over the stop street without even slowing down (the brake lights did not activate) at all. I phoned the Melkbosstrand Police Station using my in-vehicle Bluetooth system and explained the situation to Warrant Officer Els. She kept talking to me over the phone while she dispatched their patrol vehicle driven by Sergeant Christians to attend to the matter. Whilst driving behind the vehicle in Otto du Plessis Drive opposite Sea Park, a bus was parked in the yellow line, a Land Rover was passing the bus when the mentioned Toyota Quantum overtook the Land Rover on a solid white line and headed into oncoming traffic. Warrant Officer Els handled the situation calmly and in a very professional manner

and kept me on the line while all the details were dispatched to Sergeant Christians. At the three-way stop street at Otto du Plessis Drive and Melkbos Road at the back of the police station, a green Mazda Sting was standing still at the stop street indicating to turn right. The same Toyota Quantum passed this Mazda on the right hand side without stopping at the stop street. He then proceeded driving in Otto du Plessis Drive out of Melkbosstrand towards Table View. Sergeant Christians pulled the vehicle over and took it to the police station, where the vehicle was found not to be roadworthy and in no state to drive on a public road. The Traffic Department were summoned and the vehicle was impounded. Sgt Christians also issued fines of R7 000 for the driver for all the traffic violations he committed. I want to thank W/O Els and Sgt Christians for their quick and professional response in this matter. I am glad to be living in an area where police officers are still serving their community with such professionalism. GRATEFUL MELKBOSSTRAND RESIDENT Melkbosstrand

Plants that keep cats out So often in your newspaper I have read the letters of people complaining about dogs and cats. In particular a lady last week spoke of a cat who was ruining her garden. I am an animal aromatics practitioner and keen gardener so I know fairly well what plants animals like and dislike. We need to respect other people’s spaces, establishing boundaries without harming any individual or animal. In Kathmandu the villagers, in conjunction with the WWF, have resorted to planting camomile flowers and mint along the edges. The mint and camomile repel the animals as it is a fragrance they dislike, and it brings in a greater return cash crop. Keeping this in mind what can people

plant in their gardens that will keep cats out? . Plectranthus caninus - This is a common plant found all over Cape Town usually used in municipal sidewalks and gardens. It has a very distinct smell, a mix between ginger and mint. It grows in sandy soils and is so easy to just break a piece off and plant it. . Lavender, mint and rue have very distinct and strong smells that cats do not like. . Another thing cats don’t like is the smell of citrus – So throw your lemon, naartjie and orange smells in amongst your beds. . Use some chicken wire amongst your flowers. Cats do not like the texture. Diane Budd Email

At least twice a year we see these contractors arrive to work at Koeberg Power Station – the majority are French. These men arrive in rather large numbers. They then choose to live in security complexes like Seaside Village, Dolphin Beach and Eden on Bay due to our high crime rate they claim, but they bring in the crime. They have a tendency to practise the rule of “when the cat is away the mouse will play” and they have much company. All fine and well if only they would follow security procedures and have their guests signed in where security has the guest’s name and ID number on record. No, instead they bring whoever into the complex. Just last week a man (staying at Eden on the Bay) picked up a woman for the night only to wake the next morning robbed of everything that was easy to move and his car was used as a getaway vehicle! Poor chap, but what about the rest of us? We did not pick up company and we are at as much risk as he is – at least he made the choice to be in this position. Why can they not abide by the rules of the complex or have their fun elsewhere? This is a drastic breach of security and when asked, they feel we are intruding on their personal lives. Look mister, if you are afraid the proverbial cat will find out, then don’t play. If I have learnt one thing in my life, it is the truth will come out – the cat will find out. And if you want to play at least do so within the security – you are putting more than yourself at risk. They rent furnished units and the owners are left “carrying the can”. Seaside has a reputation and Eden is rapidly gaining one. I know when the French are here. We have these women all over and I am quite sure those rolled cigarettes are not just tobacco. Shona’s tops at tourism Shona Dent from Table View, an ex-Northlink College tourism student, was one of the top three students in the NCV (National Certificate Vocational) group at the first FET awards. These awards recognise the highest academic achievements of these students for their 2011 examinations in various courses. Shona received a Dell computer as her award for being rated one of the top tourism students across all six FET Colleges in the Western Cape. She received the award during a ceremony that was held at False Bay College in April 2012. Says Dalene Broeze, HOD: NCV tourism at Northlink College: “We are very proud of Shona and know that this award is just another indication of the Shona Dent quality that Northlink College produces in our tourism course.” The evening saw, among others, Donald Grant, Western Cape minister of education, delivering a keynote address at the event. During his speech he added: “Our FET Colleges provide a valuable service in developing the vocational skills that are specific to the economy of the Western Cape.” Shona is currently busy with her national diploma in tourism at the Northlink Tygerberg Campus and looks to finish this with flying colours too.

SHARING THE ROAD WITH MYCITI. Observing the MyCiTi rules of the road R

oad safety and respect for the rules are important, especially at intersections, as motorists and pedestrians share the road with MyCiTi buses. Having special bus lanes and traffic light signals only for MyCiTi buses are some of the ways Cape Town’s new public transport system gets people to their destinations faster. Drivers of private vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians crossing the road, or getting to and from MyCiTi stations, need to be aware of when MyCiTi buses have right of way.

What to look out for: Special lanes • Don’t drive in, or park on these lanes, even to drop off passengers. You will delay people using the buses and the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement officers will give you a fine.

• Don’t walk in the lanes, only use the pedestrian crossings to get safely to a MyCiTi station. Wait for the green light and then look in both directions before stepping off the pavement. Special signals • At some intersections there’s an extra turning phase for traffic signals, showing that only the MyCiTi bus is allowed to turn and all other traffic must stop. For example: Hertzog Boulevard/ Christiaan Barnard Street.

• Sometimes, there’s a ‘pre-signal’ about 50 meters ahead of an intersection. This allows a MyCiTi bus to use the intersection while normal traffic is stopped. For example: Boundary Road and Marine Drive.

• Look out for a no-turning sign, which stops traffic from turning right across a MyCiTi bus lane. For example: Hans Strydom Avenue and Lower Long Street.

Please be careful at intersections.

Pedestrians press this button at an intersection to indicate that they would like to cross the road.

Bus lanes have their own traffic signals to indicate when the bus is allowed to go.

years after their love affair broke up. Could they, should they let this moment go? Marion agrees to go back to Bernard’s flat for a drink and to reminisce over old times and the intervening 22 years. They embark on this trip down memory lane: their first meeting, their love for each other, their break-up, their marriages, their children and why after so long they are strangers. Will they part again only to meet up in another 22 years? A true romantic comedy the two characters play themselves, their younger selves and three other people in their lives as they go back and forth from past to present. What ensues makes for great theatre, frantic costume and character changes and hilarious outcomes. Gordon Molloy directs this play with his usual flair and has created a production that will delight in both the timing and precision. Tweetup to help the needy The power of social networking and the strength of the SA Twitter community have flexed its muscles and the Twitter Blanket Drive (“#TBDZA”) is under way once again. The idea is for “Tweeps” to meet up (“tweetup”) at venues around the country on the same day, at the same time to share a warm cup of coffee – and to donate a blanket or two. There are 800 000 Tweeps in SA. If 1 percent contribute, 8 000 blankets can be collected. Along with other cities, Capetonians will be part of the biggest tweet-up on 26 May

from 18:00 to 22:00 at the Fire and Ice Hotel (021 488 2555), Cape Town. #TBDZA is a South African national charity drive managed and supported by the local Twitter community, but is not an NGO or official charity organisation. No cash donations should be made to any person representing #TBDZA. This is viewed as fraudulent. . City learns from the Big Apple DESIREÉ RORKE

If you want to do something right, go learn from the best, goes the saying, and that is exactly what the City of Cape Town did when they recently visited the New York Police Department (NYPD). The NYPD is famed for being one of the most effective police departments in the world, with an illustrious reputation, which has resulted in countless movie scripts and television series over the decades – think NYPD Blues, CSI New York, The Super Cops, just to mention a few. Established in 1845, the NYPD is not only the oldest but also the largest municipal police force in the United States, and the second largest overall law enforcement agency in the States. It has the primary responsibility of law enforcement and investigation within the municipal borders of the city – a mandate very similar to that of the law enforcers and Metro police of the City of Cape Town, save for the workings of the South African Police Department. With a population of 8,3 million people in an area of only 790 square kilometres, the Big Apple is the most populous city in the United States and one of the most densely populated in the world. It is also the most linguistically diverse city in the world with as many as 800 languages spoken. It is for all the above reasons that the City of Cape Town’s safety and security committee, thought it prudent to go learn from this valiant police department, in order to shape up safety in the Mother City. The various heads of the safety departments of the city, accompanied chairperson of the committee Cllr Carin Brynard to New York for a one-week educational tour. “During these seven days we had an indepth look at several of the projects rolled out by the NYPD, especially those which involve community outreach,” Brynard told TygerBurger last week, shortly after her return, and added that the city would start investigating various options in the coming months to see how similar projects could be implemented in Cape Town. One such project, which impressed the delegation most, and would be according to Brynard essential in our city, is the Comstat Program. This IT solution integrates all the intelligence statistics in the city. “In this way all transgressions and transgressors will be recorded on one programme, which will incorporate by-law, traffic and drug related offences. The city will thus

be able to identify and profile serial offenders and our statistics will be more up to date, accurate and better managed,” she said. She adds: “With a system like this in place manpower will also be better managed. We are currently investigating the costs involved in such a system and whether the city could afford it.” Community outreach programmes implemented by the NYPD were also scrutinised by the delegation. “As much as 15 000 people in New York City are involved as volunteers, in various community outreach projects. They are paid stipends, and act as civilian peace-officers. Although they can’t make arrests they work with the police insofar as the ‘softer’ police work is concerned. “They undergo a 10-week course at the police academy after which they are deployed. A project like this won’t just take pressure off our Metro police but will also create employment opportunities for hundreds of people,” said Brynard. In other community projects the NYPD involves on a grand scale, churches, schools and parents against social ills such as drug abuse. Peace officers are stationed at problem schools as a go-between, and even school children have a roll to play,” she says. In winter they organise several blanket and food drives, and overall the projects breed much positivity in the city. “What struck me as very excellent was the strength of the NYPD brand. Their website is refreshed with the latest news and information on a daily basis,” Brynard says. Another NYPD project that could drastically improve safety in Cape Town, is the CCTV cameras installed at all public housing schemes. And is there anything they can learn from us? Yes, says Brynard, and refers to the city’s 107 call centre. “Comparing our call centre to their 911 call centres, I would say, that we have better technology,” she said. But that’s where it ends. As a whole it would however be quite impossible to compare the mighty NYPD, with its 35 000- strong force (excluding the peace officers) to Cape Town with its mere 1 000 person force – this includes Metro, traffic, fire and rescue and disaster management. “But all things considered, we are rethinking all we have learned and how it could help us to make Cape Town a better and safer city for all its citizens”. “We will soon be gauging the possibilities of getting a delegation from the NYPD to come to Cape Town for a few months to show us the ropes,” she said.

Henry Rollins is in Cape Town this week with his show, The Long March.

Henry & a mic on stage Humour and outrage; pop culture, political commentary and personal anecdote; healthy scepticism and rugged optimism. This is what you get when you watch counter-culture observer, Henry Rollins speak his mind. Rollins will be performing his new show, The Long March, at The Baxter Theatre on Friday. He explains what fans can expect from the show: “I will be on stage by myself, no screen or effects, just myself and a microphone.” “I tell stories from travels I have done all over the world, including Africa, talk about things that happened to me, what’s happening in America. Basically, it’s a long op. ed. Piece.” Rollins says. From punk band frontman to film and television star and prolific author, Rollins is a relentless one-man rollercoaster on a global track of current events. South African audiences will recognise Rollins from his role in the television series, Sons of Anarchy. “ I act between tours to stay working if the opportunity comes up,” he explains, adding: “I don’t go after it all that much, nor does it come after me all that much. “It’s interesting work but nothing I am all that good at but it’s great to be able to be part of something as cool as Sons now and then. If more of that kind of work came my way, I would definitely consider it,” he says. Rollins is also involved in many charity projects and while he says that everything he is involved with is close to his heart, he points out: “Drop In The Bucket, a small NGO in Los Angeles has been an organisation I have been working with for some time. They work primarily in southern Sudan and Uganda. “They do great work and it’s fantastic to see it up close.” Through his role as frontman for the band Black Flag, his charity work and his motivational talks, Rollins is a hero and inspiration to many young people. When asked what he thinks is the most important lesson for young people across the world, Rollins says: “That perhaps they share the world with a lot of other people, cultures and ways of ‘going about it’ and that none of this is to be feared. Perhaps it is to be embraced, explored, enjoyed, protected and understood.” He adds: “War should be seen as an example of their government in failure and they should seek to remedy that. Also, history is there to be learned from and not always repeated.” Tickets for The Long March on Friday at Computicket.

Wave rider will ‘show them what SA’s made of’ LEON STEENKAMP

Jake Montandon grabs some air during a training session at Table View Beach last week. Photo:

Leon Steenkamp

Having tested the waters of international competitive jet skiing last year, a local wave warrior is set on taking the title this time around. Sunningdale’s Jake Montandon (28) has been hitting the waves hard the last couple of months in preparation for the IFWA Jetwaves 2012 World Championship that gets under way on 25 May. Montandon took part in the North American and South American legs of the tour in 2011 winning the amateur category and coming third among the professionals at the World Championships in Brazil. This year Montandon has set his sights on the complete tour which include the first two stops of the series in Sintra, Portugal and then Montalivet, France as well. “After competing in Portugal I will be doing a road trip with my Burn team mate Zack Bright from the USA to Montalivet. We are individual competitors but because we have the same sponsor we travel together,” Montandon explains. He especially hopes for a good result in France. “The competition is from 1 to 3 June. I better win that one because it is my birthday on the third,” he challenges himself with a smile.

He managed to get a sponsored ski overseas which saves on extra and very pricey transports costs. “Overhaul has supplied me with a ski and there is a good chance I might get a full sponsorship from them. This can open doors for me, as they can supply me with a ski wherever I have to travel. The hull of the ski is different to the one I’m used to but from what I hear it is good,” he says. The flips, turns and stretches that characterise the sport mean much physical training especially in the upper body and it takes a toll on the body. “I stretched the ligaments in my left knee a month and a half ago. I was practising a back flip and nosedived into a sandbank. Sometimes you go a bit wild and you forget that you are too close to shore,” he explains the error in judgement. “But it’s all right now, it’s not a 100 percent. Since then I have been doing some rehab jogging on the beach and training as much as I can.” Montandon says this time around he is definitely better prepared for the competition than last year. “I know what to expect and I know the riders. I have worked on some new moves and my wave riding is good. “I feel confident to do well and show them what SA is made of,” he says with a grin.

HTS B’ville klop Kuile SAREL BURGER

HS Tygerberg se oorheersing by

Braving the freezing Atlantic LEON STEENKAMP

Defying the cold Atlantic waters in nothing but a swim cap, swimsuit and some sunblock, an open water swimmer managed to settle a score that has been some time in the making. Emma Alsop (35) still visibly shakes as she recalls how a determined increase in effort half way through the race gave her victory in last Saturday’s first ever 10,5km Lighthouse to Big Bay Swim. “Lisa (Cowling) is very good. We often race and she always beats me,” Alsop says with a big smile. At about half way close to the Seli wreck

Alsop asked her second how far she and Cowling were spaced. “She said we were neck and neck. I was on the inside line and increased my pace. On a long swim like this it makes a difference what lines your paddler picks for you,” she says. The strategy worked and saw Alsop exit the water and cross the line at Big Bay after 02:37:03 – the first competitor overall to finish the race without a wetsuit. Bryan Allott (02:30:29) had completed the race some eight minutes earlier wearing a wetsuit. “The race was quiet long and tough but not as cold. I have done colder swims but there were patches of cold water which

Richard Willmore was the first male without a wetsuit to complete the 10,5km Lighthouse to Big Bay swim.
