VERPLEGING: NÁ 38 JAAR WOEKER SY STEEDS IN DIE GEMEENSKAP

Passie vir versorging CARINA ROUX

S

“Sy was ook lief vir versorging, so dit is seker waar my belangstelling vandaan kom,” sê Andrea Titus (56).

Versorgers doen huisbesoeke om diegene wat ’n beroerte gehad het of dalk ’n operasie ondergaan het en nie self by geriewe kan uitkom nie, te was, vertel Titus. n additional 18 homeless people can now be accommodated at Elim Nightshelter after staff of WP Media (publishers of People’s Post, City Vision and TygerBurger) put notebooks and pens aside to make emergency waterproof sleeping bags for the shelter. This was part of Media24’s #1000 Acts of Kindness project. The sleeping bags are made with newspaper and plastic, creating a warm, portable and waterproof emergency sleeping bag for those in need. Manager of the shelter, Shafiek Ortell says homeless people come knocking at their door every day: “We have a lot of street people coming to the gates of Elim Night Shelter daily.

Hier is waar ek wil wees.”

“Sy was ma én pa.

Huis Jabes kry huis as geskenk ESMÉ ERASMUS @erasmusesme

V

‘Miracle baby’ an inspiration to all DESIRÉE RORKE @dezzierorke

zariah Gordon was stillborn on Women’s Day six years ago. Her mother Megan calls her “a true Women’s Day miracle baby” – and that’s no exaggeration. Little Azariah, who turned six on Friday 9 August and is now a healthy little girl attending Eikendal Primary School in Kraaifontein, was born prematurely at 25 weeks. First, she was deemed as a miscarriage and later stillborn, only to be revived minutes later when air was blown back into her lungs. Megan recalls the day as if it happened yesterday. “I woke up around 04:00 on Friday 9 August 2013 to go to the bathroom and this is when I saw light pink stains on my underwear. At first, I did not want to say anything because maybe it was normal,” she says. “I couldn’t be sure so I mentioned it to my family and that is when everything turned into a nightmare.” Megan recalls being absolutely calm. “I wasn’t sure what to do because she was moving and kicking and to my knowledge, she was okay and alive. “Everyone else was stressed and praying and my family quickly started to suspect that I was having a miscarriage.” When Megan got to the day hospital in Kraaifontein she was informed by medical staff that she was experiencing an inevitable miscarriage. “Moments later another nurse came in and asked what I was there for and I explained. She then took a heart monitor and checked the baby’s heart. “She said to me, “I’m calling Tygerberg Hospital. This includes visiting schools in the area and sensitizing learners to remain in school and avoid getting involved in criminal activities. “I normally have talks and programs at schools about domestic violence and sexual offences, drugs and gangsterism, bullying and child abuse, missing people and human trafficking.” Her office also does community outreaches at old age homes, children’s homes and day care centres. “We would like to have more projects with the Department of Social Development and the City of Sergeant Liezel Beukes PHOTOS: CARINA ROUX Cape Town Social Development office as we have noticed we Chief administration clerk, Wilma Kelare faced with many social ills in lerman, works closely with Beukes and schools,” says Beukes. has been at the Social Crime Office since Beukes is also the reservist coor- 2012. She has been in the police service since 2003 and was also support head in Clanwilliam, Cloetesville and, most recently, Caledon. Her job is mainly administrative and entails supply chain management, finance, managing human resources and the administration of archives and registers. Proper planning is required to give these four different components the necessary attention, she says. And yes everything on her desk is in its place. Different aspects need to be addressed with staff, from managing absenteeism to encouraging or helping someone develop as a person. It can also be frustrating as one deals with different types of personalities, she admits. She is also involved with recruitment which consists of various phases from application, a psychometric test, a fitness and integrity test, a medical and then only an interview – to see whether a person is suitable to be a police officer.

LEWENSKIEKIE

As die hoofbroodwinner is finansiële beplanning ’n moet. As jy in ’n verhouding is, moet jy deel hê in jou maat se finansiële beplanning. Hoe betrokke is jy? – Richus Nel (finansiële adviseur by PSG Wealth, Old Oak. E-pos richus.nel@psg.co.za)

Time to find óúr missing billions I found your article on the FBI and Hawks’ collaboration (“FBI tracks down online date scammer in Cape Town”, TygerBurger, 7 August) well-written, with all the relevant facts in place to understand the basics of this crime-busting story. However, the question that immediately sprang to mind was: Why did it take the intervention of the FBI to alert the Hawks in the first place? Surely R4.1 million in the international scheme of things is no big deal. Why would the USA worry to chase down an unknown man half a world away for a measly quarter million dollars? Why did they need the Hawks’ help, when our local lads seem unable to find the missing billions of Rand, or the high-profile thieves? Mind you, the results are impressive. With the (alleged) perpetrator arrested on Friday, in court the following Monday. Nice work Hawks. Now you have perfected the system, please get to it and solve a few local victim’s cases.

omgee in vandag se samelewing.

Dit sal dien as werklike voorkomende of afskrikking. JOHAN VAN WYK Durbanville

Your kids learn from your deeds I’m experiencing a big problem with parking when I pick up my son from school. I sit in front of the school for 35 minutes to ensure I get parking and not inconvenience other parents. But then you get parents that come one minute before the bell and politely park in the road in front of your car. Normally, this would not bother me because they move before my son gets into the car, but when they come walking along on their own time, not looking left or right to apologise for the inconvenience caused and taking their sweet time to get going (first have a chat) while your car is running and wanting to leave – that makes my blood boil. Then they have the cheek to look all shocked and disgusted

when you hoot for them to hurry up and move. Why do they think just because it’s at a school they can take their time and treat you as the wrong one? They are teaching their children not to consider others and it’s okay for people to wait for you irrespective if you in the wrong. No wonder kids have no respect for others these days, they learn from their parents! TESSA DE KOCK Brackenfell

Ek is dankbaar. EUREKA AUSTIN E-pos

Entries open for budding playwrights The National Arts Festival is calling on new playwrights to step forward with exciting ideas for plays that will inspire and challenge audiences for the 2020 Distell National Playwright Competition. The competition was launched last year in honour of Adam and Rosalie Small, for their contribution to South African literature, philosophy, education, and advocacy against social injustice. Scripts by writers who have not had a script or other written work professionally produced for the stage or television can be submitted. The plays can be written in any South African language and the competition calls for authentic South African stories that promote diversity and inclusivity.

Writers have until 30 September to submit a 10-page sample of their writing, and a precis of the script idea. A finished script is not required for entry. The submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges selected from literary and dramatic fields. Five finalists will be selected for mentored development of the script, before the winning work is selected. The winning writer will receive a cash prize and see their work produced at the 2020 National Arts Festival, the country’s premier arts showcase and a shop-window for producers and theatres from across the world. “South Africa is endowed with great talent in the arts and we see this initiative as an opportunity to recognise talent, start con-

versations, encourage freedom of thought and imagination. Importantly, and particularly given our history as a country, we see this competition as a vehicle to bring people together by overcoming and promoting our rich cultural diversity,” says Bridgitte Backman, corporate and regulatory affairs director at Distell. National Arts Festival executive producer Nobesuthu Rayi, says, “With this award, talented writers are given priceless mentorship and the winner will see their play on stage at the end of the process. It is a great start for a budding writer.” Entrants must be over 18 (and not in high school) and a South African citizen. V Visit www.nationalartsfestival.co.za for more information.

My parents were also passionate about music so it’s always been my life growing up.” With the support of his four children and wife, June, he says he was able to grow tremendously throughout the years. “June and I have been married for 42 years. She is my anchor. I’m really thankful for her support and managing my shows. There’s no bigger critic than my wife,” he says. Castle, who is from Strandfontein, has three grandchildren, with another one on the way. “Through it all, I’m happy that we were able to give our children stable lives despite the busy schedule. June played an important role in managing the direction my music journey went. Turning the spotlight on true crime TIYESE JERANJI @jeranji

A

Flamingo Vlei resident recently started a podcast called True Crime South Africa which is the first of its kind in South Africa to bring more attention to solved and unsolved crime cases in the country. Nicole Engelbrecht launched True Crime South Africa just over a month ago and it has exploded in popularity and is gaining momentum each day. She has always been a fan of true crime and she believes that seed was planted when she was indirectly affected by two murders. “My interest started when I was in school, in standard 5 (Grade 7) one of our girls in my class was kidnapped and murdered. At that tender age, it stuck in my mind. When I was in matric, one of the girls was murdered. I knew then that I had to do something,” she says. The mother of four fur babies says that podcasts work successfully overseas to help bring awareness to cases. “There is so much content from the British, Americans and Australians and nothing for us. True Crime South Africa is the first of its kind. Besides an interest in crime, I wanted to be a voice for victims in the country,” she says.

She aimed to bring attention to cases, and she podcasts both unsolved and solved cases. “There are a lot of cases that often are missed because they are not given media attention. I have done a case on Amahle Thabethe, an eight-year-old from Duduza in Joburg and Charmaine Maré (16) from Kriel who was also murdered a few weeks before model Reeva Steenkamp,” she said. Steenkamp was shot by her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius on 14 February 2013. “Most people don’t know about these cases and that is why I focus on them,” she says, mentioning that she wants the podcast to serve as a platform to advocate for the victims. The podcast is currently sitting on number 35 on the Spotify charts and at number 21 on Apple podcasts, all up against international podcasts. She is delighted with this

Dinner in aid of disabled The Western Cape Association for Persons with Disabilities is presenting its annual fundraising gala event on Wednesday 11 September at D’Aria. The organisation has been providing social services to persons with disabilities for more than a decade. Its services include rendering social development services, skills development programmes, as well as work and employment, and childcare education. Its facilities include 13 special daycare centres for children with severe to profound disabilities up to the age of 18 years, skills development for 19 protective workshops to those aged 18 and over who cannot access the open labour market. The theme of the event is “Masquerade”. Last year the WCAPD raised

R76 000 with their fundraising dinner, and aim to increase this target this year. The guest speaker is Sumarie Jordaan – also a singer, songwriter and motivational speaker. Her song “Verander Jou Siening” was released earlier this year. Entertainment will be provided by the well-known Afrikaans singer, songwriter, guitarist and language lover, Jannie du Toit, who also sings French texts, particularly of Jacques Brel. He mostly performs with his guitar and his brilliant ensemble of cello, piano and accordion. Tickets are R450 per person or R4 500 for a table for 10 guests. Monetary donations towards expenses will be welcomed. V Send an email to director@wcapd.org.za with enquiries.

It has been insane and very amazing to see how people really wanted this and it has opened up a lot of discussions.” She adds that when she put out content, people will often be horrified and disgusted but there is a lot of support for the victims. “Above all, solved cases bring closure for people, we like safety, we like to know that the monster is in a cage. I think that is why 90% of the case recommendations I get are solved cases,” she says. Support breakfast for home The Durbanville Children’s Home is hosting its very popular ladies breakfast on Saturday 24 August at 09:00 at Marlenique Estate near Simondium. The theme this year is “Denim & Diamonds” – so feel free to wear a denim and to be creative with the rest of your outfit. Well-known TV personality from the show, Tyd met Aleit and event maestro, Aleit Swanepoel, will be the master of ceremony. VIA’s Die Kontrak winner, Demi Lee Moore, will also perform.

Each guest will receive a gift and will be eligible for the lucky draw. All funds raised will be used toward the remedial support programme of the home. “Due to the neglect suffered in their families and studies not being prioritised, our children have a very low level of schooling, having repeated one or two grades,” said Johanna Strauss, marketing manager of the home. “They feel tremendous frustration at not having the skills for their current grade, and fears of rejection and prejudice from the

other children. “They are, therefore, at a disadvantage compared to their peers. To counteract this situation, the home wants to introduce a programme to make up for their educational shortcomings and facilitate their reintegration into the school system, abandoning the temptation to drop out,” she said. V Book tickets at R400 per person or R4 000 for a table of 10 people by email to Angelina Snyman at events@durbanvillekinderhuis.org.za or phone her on 021 975 6822.

Dié spanne is D.F. Malan, HS Bellville, Tygerberg-klub, Stellenberg, Melkbosstrand, HTS Bellville, Mo-

Malan t HS Bellville, HS Tygerberg t Brackenfell, Durbanville t Stellenberg, De Kuilen t Worcester Gimnasium, Monumentpark t Vredenburg. In verlede jaar se o.19A-kragmetings was D.F.

dag is Milnerton t Vishoek, Melkbosstrand t Hottentots-Holland, Fairbairn t Tygerbergklub, The Settlers t Khayelitsha/Nyanga, Edgemead t Fairmont.

Hierdie week se wedstryde is (tuisspan eerste): Vanaand (Woensdag): UWK t Maties; Saterdag: Tygerbergklub t Brackenfell, Valsbaai t UWK, Hamiltons t Noordelikes-Tygerberg, Belhar t Collegians, Goodwood t Busy Bees, Bellville t Young Peoples, Rangers t Kuilsrivier, Hands & Heart t Strand, Blue Stars t Kraaifonrein, Langa t Elsiesrivier. – Sarel Burger

Blue Downs to face stiff competition STEHAN SCHOEMAN The Blue Downs Cricket Club will face a different kettle of fish this coming season after being promoted to the Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) 1C Division. Since the club was established back in 1993 this was their most successful season yet, winning the 50 over 1st Division D trophy earlier this year. “We have made great strides over the past few years and our hard work and commitment are evident winning the division. It means that we as a club are doing something right apart from getting children involved in sport and to choose cricket instead of crime – which is our objective. Winning is just a bonus to the hard work and discipline we look to equip our players with,” said vice-chairman, Everton Ganger. The club will start their preparation for the new season on 13 August at the Blue Downs Cricket Stadium from 18:00 to 20:00. The players are eager to hit the nets and show that their win was no fluke. Granger said they invite all existing and new members to join and be part of the upcoming season. “We would like to thank everyone for
