Japanese senseis fly in for karate camp STEHAN SCHOEMAN

T

he annual Kyokushin-kan International Training Camp held from Friday to Sunday promises to be the biggest ever, and two top Japanese instructors are being flown in for the occasion. Senseis Yamada and Chinone, along with Shihan Hennie Bosman (chairman Africa Kyokushin-kan) from the Welgemoed dojo will conduct the camp. The picturesque Okkie Jooste Camp in Jonkershoek just outside Stellenbosch will again be the venue this year. More than 200 karateka will participate. Participants from Congo Brazzaville and Congo DRC, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, from South Africa’s seven provinces have

indicated they will be taking part. Western Province participants will include the “Young Dragons”, a group of young karateka preparing for the Kyokushin World Union Junior tournament in Moscow from 12 to 15 December, as well as many other junior and senior karateka. “A lot of emphasis will be placed on tournament style fighting, kata and self defence,” said Shihan Hennie Bosman. “It will be an honour to have two instructors of the calibre of Sensei Yamada and Senei Chinone. “Sensei Yamada placed third in the first Kyokushin World Kata tournament held in Moscow back in 2008. Their experience and knowledge will be valuable at the camp and improve our karateka’s technique.”

Stellies en Tiere verhang bordjies in WPPremierliga SAREL BURGER

Charging: Tristan Lev from Big Bay has done it again! After mistakenly missing a crucial

heat, 15-year-old Tristan managed to win the Repo Round and progress to win the U/18 Division of the South African Longboarding Champs in Cape St Francis recently. He has achieved many victories in shortboard and longboard competitions, displaying what can only be described as sheer natural talent and a flow that belies his age. Tristan has been selected to represent South Africa in the World Games in Brazil in September. Any donations and sponsorships to assist Tristan cover the cost of the trip would be greatly appreciated . Contact Joan on 073 916 9671 for bank account details. PHOTO: FABIAN COETZER
