GOLF: BRIGHT FUTURE FOR LOCAL YOUNGSTER

Belhar boy has eye on golf stardom GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

W

ith most golfers vying for the number one spot held by Tiger Woods, a young golfer is following in the footsteps of Trevor Immelman on the junior golf scene. Tristan Galant (12) from Belhar is no stranger to winning despite his age and has just emulated the senior SA golfer by becoming one of only a few junior golfers to tame the Fish River course thrice in the junior ranks. His latest achievement came last month when he successfully defended his title at the Fish River Challenge. He is now to defend his national title in Johannesburg later this year. His Dad, Martin, who is his coach and also heads up coaching for WP development explained, that at the prizegiving they were told that Immelman was the last junior golfer to come out tops at the course three times in a row. “As an 11-year-old Tristan first played the challenge for under-13’s in 2013 and won that,” he said.

International tournaments “Later that year he was there again for the SA Championships and now he has done it again. It was tough for him this year, sharing the lead on the first day but then coming in under pressure to eventually win by three strokes.” With preparations and practice underway for defending his SA title later this year, further exciting news is that the young golfer has been invited to take part in a tournament in Scotland next month. Martin saidthe opportunity for him to participate in a World Series golf tournament

was “very exciting news” but they needed “some financial help or sponsorship to get him there”. “I’ve never pushed or forced Tristan into the game, but I see how much he has grown to love it and enjoy playing, so I want to give him as much encouragement and motivation as possible. Part of that is playing tournaments here in South Africa, but the real test is getting him out to all the major junior events across the world. “This has been a testing ground for all the major professionals and as a junior he will get the chance to understand what it’s like to take to the world stage with his abilities.”

Family support This week remained a busy week for the young golfer who is in grade 7 at Erica Primary in Belhar, as he was playing in the u-13 championships in Bellville. “For me the best part is the support of my family, their encouragement at all times and, most importantly, I love the game,” says Tristan. Martin also wants to grow the sport in his community but needs help. “I am trying my best at the moment. Unfortunately golf is not a cheap sport and I need help to keep youngsters here once they get playing. There are already a few I am helping but feel that with more support I could get more youth interested,”says Martin. “It’s not just about the sport but about getting them to realise their capabilities and potential. For golf on the whole it could also mean a lot because overseas they have so many good professionals rising through the ranks of good foundation programmes. “We must get that going in South Africa as well.” V For more information about sponsorship call Mar tin on 073 145 0661.

Youngsters were getting into the swim of things when the city hosted a community youth swimming gala in Elsies River recently. More than 200 young swimmers aged between 10 and 16 who currently participate in swimming programmes at the Parow Valley, Parow North, Elsies and Ruyterwacht Swimming Pools, showed off their abilities. They have been training for the past few weeks with lifeguards and the swimming pool facility officers. The gala, held at the Elsies River Swimming Pool, formed part of the city’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department’s Learn to Swim programmes that are hosted throughout the summer season each year. “A very large percentage of children in Cape Town cannot swim and do not have access to water education programmes,” said city mayoral committee member for

community services and special projects, Belinda Walker. “The City regularly hosts these Learn to Swim programmes to try and prevent drowning incidents. With approximately 460 drowning incidents reported annually in South Africa, Learn to Swim programmes are a priority for the Sport, Recreation and Amenties Department.” Many people are prevented from learning to swim due to a lack of access to swimming pools. “The City is committed to providing increased access to swimming pools and beaches as well as the programmes necessary for residents to develop water safety and swimming skills. “This is part of the City’s vision of a safer, healthier and more inclusive city. Events such as this encourage Capetonians, and the youth especially, to be more active while also promoting healthy living,” concluded Walker.

Police clampdown on rail crime I

Clampdown Kinana said a total of 28 suspects were arrested for carrying tik, dagga, heroine, mandrax or khat on their person. Two suspects at Bellville were found to be in possession of dangerous weapons – knives – at the Bellville station and two at Kleinvlei, among other related arrests, he said. For lesser transgressions such as urinating in public, illegally crossing the railway tracks, holding a train door open while the train is in motion, and not possessing a valid train ticket, a number of people received so-called J534 fines. “A vehicle, Mazda 323, registration number CA923443, was stolen in Durbanville and was recovered by the railway police members. “In total 86 suspects were either arrested or received a J534 in the rail environment. Drugs and other goods to the value of a total of R39 871 were recovered,” Kinana said. “Approximately 750 000 commuters make use of the train on a daily basis and are policed by the railway police. Metorail released a statement last week saying they have begun seriously clamping down on transgressors.

Safe service “We will arrest and prosecute anyone caught hanging on the outside of the train – this includes those people that staff ride our trains between stations” said Mosenngwa Mofi, PRASA’s CEO. “Our message is clear: Metrorail will not tolerate dangerous and unsafe travel practices. We have on many occasions agreed that currently, our service is not to our customer’s needs in terms of on-time performance and reliability,” Mofi said. “At the heart of it, we as Prasa Rail want to run a safe and efficient service while still undergoing major improvements and modernisation that will, in time, be able to respond to customer expectations. “Until such time, we will not condone unsafe travel in the name of overcrowding and our trains will not leave the platform if com-

n one week four railway police stations, including the Bellville unit, made a number of arrests during clampdown operations. The operations covered Bellville, Cape Town, Philippi and Retreat stations from Sunday 30 March to Sunday 6 April as part of a drive to ensure commuter safety, said Colonel Thembinkosi Kinana, a provincial police spokesperson. He said during patrols in trains and along stations, stop-and-search procedures were conducted and a number of suspects arrested on charges ranging from assault to rape to robbery and malicious damage to property. One arrest at the Bellville station followed a suspect being found in possession of counterfeit R100 notes, he said.

embers of The Settlers High Dynamix jazz band recently rode the crest of a musical tsunami when they got to perform alongside international jazz greats, Shakatak. Prior to the fantastic opportunity, the group were armed with hands-on showbiz knowledge when they completed a course for arts and culture focus schools from across the Western Cape. Craig Parks, a coordinator of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival Youth Training and Development Programme, explained that through the programme learners were taught about the “behind the scenes” side of the music industry, with the focus on putting together a festival. The four-week programme culminated in a concert by the ten participating schools on Sunday 23 March. These schools included The Settlers, Groote Schuur, South Peninsula, Wynberg, Heathfield, Chris Hani and Belhar High Schools, as well as participation by learners from the Cape Music Institute, Crystal House Academy and the Intyholo Schools Project.

A sea of people As part of the programme, the schools were invited to be part of the Cape Town Jazz Festival, with the chance to play on one of the festival stages. They are treated like any other artist, Craig said. “I promise you, the stars get made here,” he said.

Tracey Appolis, the Dynamix’s band director, said three of the band members – Keenan Jacobs, Jodi Fredericks and Damian Kamineth – were selected through the programme to perform in the Schools All Star Superband. This band then went on to perform at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival Free Concert at Green Market Square on Wednesday 26 March. “They were overwhelmed by the sea of people and enjoyed entertaining the crowd,” Tracey said. A few days later the All Stars got to open for international band Shakatak at the Sunday After Jazz Concert at Maynardville Park on Sunday 30 March. Dynamix band member Jodi Fredericks (18) told TygerBurger how exciting the experience was. “Wow! Wow! And wow again! Really, what an honour. I mean Shakatak has been coming on for years. They’re legends, and to have shared the same stage was an extreme honour. Truly a blessing,” Jodi said. Tracey said this was the biggest stage the band had ever performed on. “They have worked extremely hard...They have achieved a lot and improved significantly in a short space of time,” she said. “These young musicians have brought good credit to the school, I am very proud of them, proud to be their teacher, and I am looking forward to a year filled with many more musical experiences and growth,” enthused Tracey. Jodi’s mom, Renee Sellidon, said she had high hopes for her daughter’s musical career. .

Cape pupils see setwork staged Cape Town learners are set to receive an enormous boost to their knowledge of this year’s grade 12 setwork thanks to the staging of Amaza at the Artscape Theatre. To be performed from 5 to 14 May, Amaza forms part of the Artscape educational youth development programme promoting social cohesion, good citizenship and empowerment through the arts. Amaza, a prescribed book by ZS Qangule for grade 12 learners, has been adapted by Thokozile Ntshinga. It is in its fourth consecutive season, the play gives grade 12 Xhosa learners the opportunity to experience the play in their own language and further equip them with essential skills to become performers. Over 5 700 learners from 60 schools saw the production in 2013. “The purpose of the educational programme is to assist grade 12 learners academically by presenting plays which are taught as literature on a theatre stage,” says Marlene Le Roux, director for Artscape Audience Development and Education. “We will also be introducing learners to theatre and drama production of a high quality, thereby building the audience of the future”, concluded Marlene. Amaza is an 18 cast member thriller set in a rural village in the Transkei.

Body of murdered man found at rail line Police need your help to solve a murder. On Sunday 9 February at approximately 08:14 police were called out to a crime scene at Lavistown railway station in Bishop Lavis. At the scene Metrorail security pointed out the body of an unknown male lying near the tracks. He was later identified as Azola Siwela, 21, from Samora Machel in Philippi, who sustained head injuries that led to his death. Further investigation revealed that these head injuries were caused by a concrete block that was found at the scene. At the time of his death the victim was wearing black trousers, a black shirt and white vest. Police have opened a murder docket. V Members of the public who may have witnessed this incident or have more info about the murder can contact the investigating officer, Detective Constable Matiwane on 021 935 9878.

Carnival fun gets kids into the holiday spirit The Parow East Primary school’s carnival took place at the school last Thursday just before the start of the holiday. It was a fun filled day with merry-goround rides, water slides, a gladiator challenge, jumping castles, face painting and lots of games on offer, some hand made by grade

6-teacher Louis Mundey. Tiara van der Poel and Jarrid Pharo were chosen as Miss and Master Carnival. A variety of food stalls selling boerewors rolls, pancakes, candy floss and cold drinks ensured no one went hungry. V Visit www.tygerburger.co.za for a photo gallery.

Gvt offices see influx of youth Hundreds of Western Cape youth are taking part in an one year internship programme as part of a provincial government project. Minster for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism, Alan Winde, welcomed the group of interns during a ceremony last week, all matriculants from across the province, to the 2014 Premier’s Advancement for Youth (PAY) project. The welcoming ceremony was held on Friday 4 April at the Western Cape Sport School in Kuils River. In a statement released last week Winde said that the Western Cape government will invest a further R27 million this year in the work experience internship for matrculants, through the PAY Project. The PAY Project was established by Pre-

mier Helen Zille in 2011 and is managed by the Department of the Premier. On Monday 776 interns started their one-year internships at one of Western Cape government’s 13 departments. “This is a great opportunity for our young people to obtain the on-the-job experience they need to get their first foothold into the economy. “Our goal is to ensure that all youth have access to learning and employment opportunities so that they can make a meaningful contribution to the economy and ensure that they live better lives. “We’re serious about skills development and over the next three years we will be investing over R300 million in a range of these initiatives,” Winde explained. Between 2012 and 2014, the programme

has created a total of 2 251 internships. As part of their work readiness training, the students receive an induction into how national and regional governments work. During their internship they complete several skills development courses. These include financial management, IT training, CV writing and interview skills. “I hope that the young people participating in the project take full advantage of this opportunity. They will receive valuable experience and an excellent foundation for their future careers. “This is an opportunity that will change their life course forever if they choose to seize it,” Winde said. The matriculants hail from the West Coast, Cape Winelands, Central Karoo and Eden District as well as the Overberg area.

The secret to attracting bees The theme for this year’s Botanical Society Kirstenbosch Plant Fair is “Nurturing Chameleons and Nourishing Honey Bees”. The fair, which promises to shed light on the secrets to growing plants that will attract and feed these creatures, takes place on Saturday 12 April from 09:00 to 16:00 and Sunday 13 April from 09:00 to 13:00 at the Stone Cottages, Newlands. Details at www.botsoc-kirstenbosch.org.za.

Join in for the riel dance The Khoi Namas will be hosting a riel dance on Saturday 12 April. It will be taking place at the Garlandale High School in Garden Street in Athlone from 19:30. V Info: 021 371 2810 or 076 565 4018

PLAY SPORT4LIFE: INSPIRE THROUGH TRIBUTE

Fame for ‘ball giants’

GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

A

n era when sport played a big part in the community was remembered when Maitland Giants Baseball Club hosted a reunion last week. Former star players spoke about the game with fond memories of the enjoyment that it brought to them as players, and most importantly, the positive impact it had on them as juniors taking the lessons of discipline into their adult lives. While many of those players may have left the Maitland area and spread across the Peninsula, it was obvious that the “Giants” retained a special place in their hearts. This event was the brainchild of Miles October, a former player who rose through the ranks from junior level, and wants to give back to his community through a new organisation Play Sport4Life (PS4L). “PS4L is a new sport for development venture based in the Kensington/Factreton/ Maitland areas that wants to revive sport in the area,” he says. “We organised this event because we wanted to highlight how important sport was in the community and we wanted to honour some of the club’s former greats who were inducted into the club’s Hall of Fame. “It’s important that we show our appreciation for the role that these guys played in so

many lives.” While the evening was well attended and saw former players from many areas get together for the first time, there was also a big surprise for them. “Kenny Roman, the club star pitcher from the 1970s, was flown in from Australia to attend the event and surprised birthday boy on the night Danny Page, when he walked in with a huge Maitland Giants birthday cake,” continues Miles. “This was very special for so many of the members because Kenny was one of the stars of our teams and he shared some of the highlights of his playing days with the gathering.” Miles was very serious about the goals of Play Sport4Life in his home suburb. “We want to revive sport in the community as a means to deal with the social issues plaguing it – rampant drug abuse, gang violence and crime. PS4L intends to provide a safe environment where children and adults can play sport and have fun and at the same time learn essential skills such being disciplined, team work and respect for others. “Other sports clubs which have benefitted from PS4L sponsorship this year includes Norway Parks Football Club, Athlone As Baseball Club and Kenfac Phillies Softball Club.” V For more information on Play Sport4Life visit www.playsport4life.org.

Vars vyftiental ná rustyd kelder Stellies SAREL BURGER
