MISSION: HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT

‘Youth are assets’

GARY VAN DYK A new organisation wants to empower youth through fighting unemployment. YoungPeople@Work, is based in Bishop Lavis but is on a mission to help young people in all areas to achieve their potential through creating work opportunities. Founded by consultant, Frank Julie, the organisation hosted their official launch at the Bishop Lavis Library last week, where he outlined the organisation’s aims to help with unemployment in communities. “South Africa is in the grip of a severe unemployment crisis that

borders on a national emergency,” he said. “We have the the highest youth unemployment in the developing world at around 60 %, which is three times worse than the Great Depression of the 1920s. “Innovative solutions are called for to address this scourge that robs so many young people of a productive and decent life where you can develop to your fullest potential. “We are fully aware that the challenge of unemployment is also systemic and that radical change is required to address this. Embedded in all our programmes therefore is the need to create aware-

ness about the systemic nature of the problem and strategies to address it at its root, lest we become complicit in only addressing symptoms and not also the causes.” The organisation is registered as a non-profit company, and is a new generation organisation for young people by young people. “Our vision is about young people engaged in productive work to enhance economic, social, cultural and spiritual development,” continued Julie. “We regard working on oneself as the most productive work. Here youth are not just recipients of predesigned programmes, but active

participants in the design themselves. “We regard youth as assets not liabilities and believe they have inherent talents, strengths and positive energy that must be harnessed to facilitate their holistic development to their fullest potential. “They can be leaders today and not just tomorrow, that is why we have the slogan, Living to Work, not Working to live!” Keynote speaker was Taj Aklekker (National Chairman of the Community Chest of SA), who inspired the gathering with stories of successful young people. TYGERBURGER | ELSIESRIVIER Woensdag, 5 Desember 2012

Vertical gardens in Joe Slovo A section in Mtshini Wam Informal Settlement in Joe Slovo Park is quickly becoming a sterling example of how a poor community can work with other roleplayers to improve their living conditions. Mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, was one of the high profile dignitaries that recently met in the heart of a reblocked section in Mtshini Wam known as New Town. TygerBurger reported recently in the article “New Town shapes up” on the massive strides taken by the community and the City of Cape Town regarding the reblocking. Now even more initiatives, such as the installation and piloting of solar bulbs and

low-tech vertical vegetable gardens, have been implemented and made public in the informal settlement. Last week three informal dwellings have been retro-fitted with these bulbs and vertical vegetable gardens as part of a pilot programme. The project is designed by Capetonians Stephen Lamb and Andrew Lord and will be conducted on a small scale in order to establish its feasibility. The vertical gardens have been designed specifically for areas where there are limited space. There are also plastic “doors” protecting it from theft or damage by the wind. The solar light bulbs is solar charged and can light a shack for almost a whole day af-

ter charging with just half a day’s sunlight. The pilot project will create opportunities for livelihoods and nutrition, and also aims to reduce the spread of fires in informal settlements. Smith focussed more on the reblocking in his key-note address. “My work is the sharp end of the stick, so my reputation is really someone who does the tough stuff and not the feel good stories. “This is a place where the intelligent design converges with common sense. We have had major problems with fires around the city, but since 2005 we have done massive resourcing of the fire department. We cannot keep investing in this department and expect the fire mortalility rate to come down, unless we put a fireman in every shack to hold up the candles and keep it from falling over. So we’re starting to invest in alternative mechanisms and strategies. Most of these are awareness training,” he said. Smith added that he is very proud of the Mtshini Wam community and that reblocking should ideally happen in every informal settlement. This stops fires from spreading so quickly and also hastens the response times of fire engines.

Stay out of red this Janu(worry)

January is the longest month of the year – by far. The decorations will be put away, children will be back to school and day-today activities will resume. If not careful, however, consumers may carry part of the holidays with them into 2013 – in the form of debt. TransUnion SA, responsible for consumber education, encourages consumers to properly manage their money in December so that January does not start in a rush of red – which can take months to pay off. Excessive debt can reflect negatively on your credit report, and can lead to challenges when trying to obtain additional credit you may need. So, how do you avoid a financial hangover that can last long after the Christmas decorations have been packed away – without turning into Scrooge? V Set yourself a festive season budget – and

stick to it. V Remember to keep your account and credit card balances way below your credit limit. Aim for balances of under 30%. V Calculate the additional expenses you are going to have to fund in January and put money aside for them. Don’t “borrow” from this fund. V If you are lucky enough to receive an endof-year bonus, use the money to pay down your existing credit cards and other debt. V Make a new year resolution to buy your Christmas presents throughout the year (preferably at sales) and put them away. Kids discover the joys of reading

GARY VAN DYK Learners at Elnor Primary in Elsies River have a passion for books. Working with the Elsies River Library, Grade 6 learners at the school took part in an exciting initiative this year that saw them discovering the joys of reading. Last week saw them getting certificates for their participation in the project, and a goody bag sponsored by World Books. Senior librarian at the library, Julian Schroeder, said that these learners all attended sessions on Wednesday mornings as part of a unique “Yes! We Are Reading” programme that was presented by Gwendoline Reed to 53 learners from the school. “This is a project that we are hoping to extend to more schools in the area because it has been so successful,” he said. “We monitored this project very closely in partnership with the school and noted a marked improvement to the learners attitudes to their education. “Our hope is that it has inspired and motivated them to continue their love for reading for the rest of their lives. “We are encouraging all parents to enrol children as members of the libraries in their areas, after all it is a free service, but

opens their minds to the whole world. “The best gift you can give your child is a library card. Fancy parents take their children to the mall, smart parents take their children to the library.” Teacher at the school Henry Baartman, who accompanied the children to the library every week, thanked the library staff for starting this project. “We are very impressed with the project,” he said. “Seeing the children begin to enjoy reading was a fantastic reward for me as a teacher and as a school we will be supporting, and encouraging it for the future.” Elsies River Library will also be having some fun activities during the school holidays. On Monday 10 December you can learn to make your own pencil case, then on the Tuesday there will be fun with some creative dance, and Wednesday will focus on safety tips for a safe holiday season. Thursday 13 December the children will be treated to readings of popular Christmas stories and Friday will be fun with facepainting and games. All programmes start at 10:00 and are free of charge. Walk away with a designer fridge Isn’t it amazing that by donating a mere R20 to Cansa’s Eikehof Care Home, one can walk away with a designer fridge, as well as having the satisfaction of doing a great deed? Hirsch’s, SMEG and Adventure Boot Camp for Women, are giving away a brand new SMEG FAB28 fridge valued at R16 600 to one reader who donates money via SMS to a very worthy cause. All proceeds of this SMS campaign will go towards the refurbishing of Eikehof Care Home in Cape Town, which provides accommodation, meals, and transport to out-of-town cancer patients while they are receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the city. By SMSing, which is R20 per SMS, you would be assisting Eikehof to continue acting as a lifeline for patients and their families and enable them to provide the nourishment their patients need to overcome this disease.

Return to sender bargains Those looking for bargains can head to the Goodwood Rugby Club on 7 December where the South African Post Office’s Returned Letter Office (RLO) will be hosting one of its popular auctions. There will be a wide range of items that are up for grabs, which include various electronic items, sports equipment, kids toys, jewellery, books, cosmetics and clothes. “This is the perfect opportunity for Cape Town residents to do all their Christmas shopping at bargain prices. There is some-

thing for everyone,” says Martie Gilchrist, regional communication manager of the SA Post Office. Parcels from around the country that can’t be delivered and traced back to the desired recipient or sender, are sent to the RLO in Cape Town. The auction will take place at 10:30. All items will be able to be viewed between 09:00 and 10:00. For more information visit www.postoffice.co.za or contact Customer Care Centre on 0860 111 502. Teacher resigns after three decades GARY VAN DYK Gardenia Primary in Belhar is saying a sad farewell to a teacher at the end of this year. Last week the school hosted a special celebration for Valerie Cloete who has been teaching for the past 32 years. After completing her training in 1979 she first taught at a school in Elim before moving to Boundary Primary in Bonteheuwel, and then started at Gardenia in 1985. Her passion for teaching was in the foundation phase of education teaching Grade 1 for most of her career. There was a year that she was asked to teach Grade 3, but she soon requested that she get her beloved Grade 1’s back under her care and guidance. During the event last week many of her colleagues spoke of her love for the school and its learners, even taking time during vacations to be at the school to help learners. Principal Kevin Sonn wished her well for her retirement but pointed out that he knew she would always be a part of the family at the school. “I know that we will always be able to call on her,” he said. “She must enjoy this retirement to be with her family, but never forget her special family of learners that she has guided at the school.”

‘Don’t just give cash to vagrants’ With the festive season fast approaching, northern suburbs residents are requested to support organisations, which take care of the homeless, instead of giving money to individuals. Wayne Aldridge, principal inspector for the Displaced People’s Unit (DPU) said over the festive season, a hike is experienced in the number of people donating money to homeless people. “Especially tourists are known to give money and other items to street people,” he said. He advises the management of all hotels, bed-and-breakfasts as well as guest houses to please make contact with the City of Cape Town to obtain pamphlets about the city’s Cape Town Cares, Give Responsibly campaign. This campaign is part of the city’s efforts to build a Caring City by re-integrating homeless people into their community of origin wherever this is possible to achieve. The campaign aims to inform businesses, tourists and the public about the city’s pro-active and sustainable measures to tackle homelessness. Aldridge urged people to be vigilant over the holiday season, and to inform guests to do the same. The vision of the Give Responsibly Campaign is to significantly reduce and to adequately manage the number of people living on streets, with special emphasis on facilitating a holistic, developmental, integrated and realistic approach to working with street people. The vision further includes the development of programmes aimed at preventing further migration to the streets over the course of time. The focus of this approach is to give street people the necessary developmental assistance, in order to achieve employment, accommodation and reintegration with their families and the community. The Give Responsibly Campaign mentions the critical role communities play in the rehabilitation of street people. Most street adults survive through residents’ donations in the form of money, food, clothing, bedding or recycling material, as well as odd jobs for money. This, however, tends to reinforce and entrench the tendency towards life on the street, particularly for adults who are accustomed to it. Report vagrant issues to 0800 872 201. To assist street people, phone Metro Evangeliese Sorg 021 949 8736 or Tygerberg Assosiation for Street People on 021 948 5399.

Artscape going live with 20!20 revamp LOUISA STEYL he iconic Artscape Theatre Centre is getting a R1.5 billion facelift, turning it into a multifunctional cultural hub. Dubbed Artscape Live 20!20, the plan will see the 41-year old complex become one of the largest precincts in Africa dedicated to the performing arts. The revamp will see the addition of an amphitheatre, a concert hall, new rehearsal spaces, new studio theatre and a performance academy, amongst other changes. Artscape chairman Prof Somadoda Fikeni, says although the institution still needs to secure final approvals and funds, they hope to create a cultural hub.

“We must start with the children in the communities and find them and train them.” The proposed academy will offer training for 300 students, while the Zip Zap Circus School will have its own rigging studio. Maas says the expansion will provide opportunities for young talented people in the community. Thanks to the CTICC, the BRT station and new developments at Culemborg, Maas points out that the theatre is no longer positioned on the “outskirts” of the CBD, but is instead in a prime position to be used as a multifunctional hub. The proposed development plans also include four double-height seminar rooms.

Catalyst for growth “Our vision for 2020 is to create an epicentre of cultural excellence by using the performing arts industry as a prime catalyst of economic growth, human development and social cohesion,” he says. Artscape CEO, Michael Maas, says the task of the theatre is to “bring the arts to the people”. “We cannot end with a performer on the stage,” he says.

Better acoustics The concert hall, only the second of its kind in Cape Town, will be acoustically treated, making it an ideal venue for choirs, orchestras and even jazz performers. New studio theatres will allow the theatre to be more flexible. “Not all stories are meant for the opera house stage,” Maas says. The piazza in front of the theatre will be covered and sheltered from the wind, to create an amphitheatre, while the theatre will

sectors in the modern world. “To keep pace with future growth and burgeoning demand, Artscape has seized the opportunity to expand its capabilities and capacity.”

V Onwettige graffiti kan aangemeld word by 107 (vanaf ’n landlyn) of 021 480 7700 (vanaf ’n selfoon).

Never leave kids in a hot car A press release issued by Netcare warns of the dangers of leaving babies, children or the elderly unattended in a vehicle, while you shop. Dr Victoria Roets, Netcare’s 911 principal medical consultant says the temperature inside a vehicle parked in the hot sun can quickly become like a furnace, which can be life-threatening to young and old alike. This she says, is caused by radiant energy from the sun, which can pass through glass, shines into the vehicle, quickly warming the interior. With very few reflective surfaces inside a vehicle, the energy is absorbed rather than radiated outwards. Due to the limited airflow in a vehicle, non-radiant energy also remains inside the vehicle, adding to the rapid rise in temperature. Windows left slightly open does not decrease the maximum temperature inside the vehicle by much. “Babies and young children are at a higher risk of heat stroke as their bodies can heat up as much as three to five times faster than that of an adult because their internal thermoregularitory systems are not fully developed. Under stress, they tend to absorb or generate heat quickly and are less able to cool the body,” said Roets. This she says makes them particularly vulnerable to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. “If these medical conditions are not

rapidly treated it can be very serious, even life-threatening. Elderly people are at risk because their bodies contain less water than that of healthy adults and the thirst mechanism often becomes less sensitive as people age.” She emphasises that it is important that babies, children and elderly people who have been left unattended in hot vehicles undergo medical examinations to ensure they are not suffering from either heat exhaustion or heat stroke. According to Shalen Ramduth, Netcare 911’s head of National Road Operations, Netcare responds to a fair number of calls related to dehydrated children and elderly people who have been left in motor vehicles. Ramduth offers the following advice: V If you see a child or elderly person left in a hot vehicle and are concerned for their safety, call an emergency services provider. V Make sure that everyone has left your vehicle after parking. V Lock your car and make sure that children cannot access your keys. “Never leave children, elderly folk or pets in vehicles, not even for a minute. You may think you can rush into a shop but you may get stuck in a queue or get distracted. You may park in the shade only to find the vehicle is in the full sun when you come back. It is simply not worth taking the risk.”

These chips can ‘find’ lost pets With Christmas coming up, having your pet microchipped is of vital importance as many animals go missing over the festive period for various reasons. To avoid losing a pet, the public is urged to have a microchip installed into their pets, which will prevent a great deal of sorrow, should they ever go missing and is a short and hardly painful procedure. Pets that are lost, normally get picked up and are taken to either vets or shelters like the SPCA where they are scanned and checked for microchips. They can be taken to any vet, as well as places like the AACL or SPCA to have the microchip installed through a painless process, which only lasts a few seconds. Pets could virtually be found the same day and will save a lot of stress as it is very traumatic for them to be lost and taken away from the family and environment that is known to them. Before having a microchip installed, it is suggested that an enquiry is done from a vet as to what kind of microchip they are using, as some of them have a yearly reactivation fee and others require a once-off payment. When having a microchip installed, it is advised to animal owners to make use of one of the popular designs which include Verbac or Identipet. Verbac and Identipet are the most popular microchips, and Identipet has a yearly fee of R55. The costs vary from place to place but the procedure normally costs about R200 to R350. Once the microchip is installed, the owner’s details are stored on their databases. It is advised that the contact details and details regarding the pet are always up to date. If pets were microchipped a few years ago, it is advised to take them to the vet to be scanned, in order to determine whether the microchip can be detected, read, is outdated or if they are able to locate the contact details.

Think of children alone at home

Two of the most common ways unwanted visitors gain access to a property is when children are at home alone – especially over the forthcoming end of year holidays when their parents are at work and of course weekends. With many dual-income households, children commonly spend more time on a property on their own without their parents and yet often they are forgotten when home security planning is concerned. Chubb Fire and Security suggests the following: V Remember your children when planning for your home’s security, especially when they are at home alone or during weekend or holiday periods. V Many home burglaries or hold-ups occur because children haven’t been told what to do when this happens. V Children must never allow unannounced visitors onto the property. V Children should be taught how to answer a telephone or gate intercom without betraying the fact that they are alone. V Rather than acknowledging that their parents are away from the property, they should say that the required person is not available and ask the caller to leave a message. V On no account should a visitor be allowed onto the property unannounced or without their parent’s permission. VYour children should never be cajoled into going to the property’s gate to investigate an unannounced visitor. VYour children should know the location of your panic buttons, and more importantly, how to use them. If you have decided to invest in remote panic buttons, make sure your children have one at their disposal. VAn easily accessible list of emergency contact numbers such as you and your spouse’s work and cellphone numbers as well as those of the immediate neighbours, your security company, the police and other emergency services, such as the fire department, should be left near the home’s main phone. V Most children have cellphones – input these numbers into their phones and if they have the facility, show your children how to use the speed dial facility on their phone. V It is advisable and indeed necessary to frequently test any fixed or mobile panic buttons, but please advise your monitoring centre first. False alarms cost lives and to do this as a means of testing response times could cost a person their life.

Small changes, big advancements DESIREÉ RORKE

A

small change can make a world of difference – a powerful insight grasped by two local design students at the Bellville branch of CPUT, when they designed an innovative product that can change the way millions of poor South Africans live today. Carmen Johnson (24) from Brackenfell and Chenjerai Kamushinda (37) from Kraaifontein, designed a plastic floor bathing tub for shacks, which was recently chosen as one of 16 finalist designs in the Shift, Fresh Talent Sustainable Design Competition. The first prototype, when completed, will be exhibited throughout the country next year and at a prestigious Swedish design exhibition during 2013. The plastic floor bathing tub, is a specially designed bathtub for use in small spaces

common in shacks in townships and made out of recycled plastic. The bathtub can be easily put up or folded away when not in use. According to Carmen, they had to come up with a sustainable product, which would not only enrich the lives of people in informal settlements, but also have a positive impact on the environment. The pair were prompted to look at ideas after Chenjerai told Carmen about the very limited sanitation conditions for shack dwellers in Wallacedene. The designers then embarked on a factfinding mission in the Embacweni informal settlement, and this design was the final outcome. According to Carmen, on average five or six people live in one shack and share one portable toilet outside. They have no baths and are forced to un-

dress in front of their family members to wipe themselves clean with a bucket of water inside the shack. This they do without any form of privacy, after which the dirty water is simply thrown outside the shack. Hence, the Plastic Floor Bathing Tub. The product itself is a floor tub, compact enough to fit into a shack floor with a plastic covering around it. It will allow an adult person to bath in privacy, while standing or sitting. At its base it has an outlet connected to a pipe, which is in turn connected to an underground or surface water collection system that leads to a communal water cleansing station. “In this way the water can be recycled and used again for communal gardens for instance, without becoming a pollutant to the greater environment,” Carmen says. The prototype of the tub. For Chenjerai sustainable living means “that we have to unlearn most of a prototype, before the winners are anthe bad habits that we have been using in nounced on 15 February,” says Carmen. “We have a mentor to assist us with the the way we produce our products and the practicalities and we are very excited about way we consume them”. With their design plan the pair also sug- it all.” The three winners will be awarded prizes gested that people in the informal settlements be motivated to collect plastic and oth- to the value of R7 000, R5 000 and R3 000, reer refuse, in exchange for a free tub set for spectively and go on a knowledge exchange trip to Sweden to learn more about the Scantheir home. Both Carmen and Chenjerai are ecstatic dinavian ways of sustainable living and deabout their design reaching the finals, but sign. now they really have their work cut out for V For more information visit www.theshift.org.za, or email info@theshift.org.za or watch our latest videos them. “We now have six months to manufacture on http://vimeo.com/theshift.

Approximately 1 000 people attended World Aids Day on Friday at the His People Centre in Goodwood. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

Reality of Aids strikes home The provincial health department commemorated World AIDS Day on Friday at the His People Centre in Goodwood. Approximately 1 000 guests, ranging from high profile dignitaries to the youth of Cape Town attended. A video of pre-recorded youth engagement sessions and extracts thereof formed part of the production to show the magnitude of the topic. The underlying aim of this video is to get young adults “to get to know the problem and know the response” and to commit to a means of providing better support to young people to help protect themselves against structural determinants of bad health outcomes. Professor Craig Househam, Western Cape head of Health, said: “Globally South Africa has the highest number of HIV-infected citizens, namely 5,6 million within the total population of this country. The infection among young women is disproportionately high and within the age group of 20 to 24 years their risk is four times higher than the general population.” Twelve engagement sessions were held

during the run-up months to World Aids Day where responsible adults were exposed to the realities of youth vulnerability. The intention was to get them to understand youth issues and ultimately understand how the youth would like to access services. This included how the youth experience substance abuse, interpersonal violence and attention from older men and women (so-called sugar mommies and daddies). Researchers working on these issues were invited to do presentations on their findings on the impact of these social problems on the youth. It served as a “safe space” where the youth could be heard rather than spoken to by government authorities. Western Cape Minister of Health, Theuns Botha, concluded: “The province’s goal to achieve zero HIV infections by 2016 can only be achieved in partnership with government, citizens, civil society and business. It is only in co-operation that we can ensure that infected people are placed at the centre of the health system and treated according to individual needs and circumstances.”

Brakke se nate trek nou los

The karate students at Premier Fitness and Leisure in Bellville.

Sensei gets 5th Dan Black Belt Sensei Jon Williams, the karate instructor of Bellville JKA, Premier Fitness and Leisure’s in-house karate club, was recently awarded the rank of Godan, 5th Dan (5th Degree Black Belt). He had to take a gruelling grading that tested his skills in karate basics, kata (form) and kumite (fighting). He belongs to SA JKA (South African Japan Karate Association) which is the largest and most well known established karate organisation in the country. JKA is the only karate organisation recognised by the Japanese government as being an educational institution. They follow a strict curriculum and students progress through grades that develop both physical and mental abilities. Sensei Jon started karate at the age of six and now at 36 says he is the fittest he has ever been. He has achieved much in his art but some of the most prestigious accolades include being Southern Transvaal, Southern Gauteng, Eastern Province and Western Province champion (and being awarded the respective colours). He has represented South Africa at Karate as an u-21 (second

place world champs), he captained the SA student side when he was at university and also represented the senior side. He has represented SA JKA Team at the World Championships in Paris in 1998 (third place) and last year in Thailand. He has been SA JKA Open Kata Champion 2011 and 2012 and is currently the Western Province champion. He is the 2012 Western Province Karate Sportsman of the Year. Sensei Jon’s youngest student is four and the oldest is in his sixties. “People do karate for whatever reason, some to keep fit, for discipline, to learn a new art/sport, or to learn self defence. One is never too old to start and karate is good for overall development, both physical and mental, for kids and adults. You can do karate forever and you won’t believe the many ways it will help your everyday life.” Last weekend Western Cape JKA held a regional seminar training and grading at Premier Fitness and Leisure with Sensei Johan La Grange, SA JKA’s head technical instructor from Johannesburg. V Sensei Jon can be contacted at Premier Fitness and Leisure on 021 949 0685 or on 082 829 4013.

– (Sarel Burger)

Ultimate in wrestling bouts The Parow Civic Centre will once again host the ultimate Africa Wrestling Alliance experience on Tuesday 11 December. This one is big, featuring the usual motley crew of wrestling talent including the likes of The Oz, Johnny Palazzio and more. This wouldn’t be the AWA’s top calendar event however if it weren’t for some very special additions such as the Coca Cola Royal Rumble. In this bout 22 men will enter the ring to contend for the Coca Cola Royal Rumble title and the sought-after belt that accompanies it. No man will have to work harder for the belt than the Bulldog, last year’s winner and subsequently the title defender. With this honour comes the immense pressure of being the first man to enter the squared circle. Spectators will also be treated to three title matches. Shaun Koen will be present to defend the All Africa Heavyweight title he

fought so hard to get in the first place. They don’t call this powerful and wizened wrestler the Lion of Africa for nothing, but even mighty lions have been known to fall at the jaws of the right sort of predator, or should we say predators? Crowd-favourite, Mr Money is renowned for his love being the centre of attention. He must face a mighty challenger to his reign as the Cruiserweight champion. Yet it is hard to imagine any other wrestler in this division able to outwit Mr Money, the people’s champ. The last title fight is a three-way ladder bout that will determine who goes home with Max the Body’s Towbars Cape Lightweight Champion. He’ll have to defend against the combined might of Ed Electric and Little Hillbilly. Call 082 456 0792 to reserve your seat at R80. R40 for unreserved seats. The action starts at 19:30.

16 UNIVERSITY TEAMS: PROFESSIONAL LEAGUES BECKON

UWC home advantage

T

he University of the Western Cape (UWC) is hosting the 18th edition of the University Sports South Africa (USSA) Football National Club Championships this week until Friday. Some 16 of the country’s best university football teams will compete for the coveted title. The national competition, now in its 18th year, is also the platform where national student teams are selected to represent South Africa and USSA at various national and international championships. This event will see the University of Johannesburg try to retain their title as the Ladies’ Champions from 2011 and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University attempting to

retain their Men’s title from last year. NWUMafikeng men’s team has won the competition three times since the championship was launched in 1994.

Top leagues That makes them the all-time leaders in the men’s section. In the woman’s section VUT, UJ, TUT Pretoria and Tuks have represented the Gauteng province in the championships for the past five years. The competition has also produced a number of soccer stars who are now top footballers within professional structures like the Premier Soccer League and the Sasol League. The current and former Banyana Banya-

na captains Amanda Dlamini and Simphiwe Dluldlu have represented Tuks and UJ respectively at the USSA Football National Championships. UWC coach Jerry Laka feels confident that his teams will take the cup after their superb performance in their league games this year, especially with players like Vuyo Mkhabela, the 19-year-old defender who represented South Africa in October at the Women’s African Football Championships that took place in Equatorial Guinea. “This competition is very important because it promotes student participation in sport,” he said. “UWC has not won this competition in a few years but as the host team I believe it is crucial that we win. Our teams

Milano: two wins in two games this week THOMAS CAROLUS Local side Milano United is heading for the top. They produced a gutsy performance and earned themselves a second spot on the National First Division standings when they beat high flying African Warriors 2-0 at the Rooikrans stadium in Grassy Park on Saturday. Goals were scored by red hot Lesvin Stoffels and Devon Saal, which was good enough to give the coach his second successive league win. Milano United’s victory over African War-

riors made it two wins in two games this week after Wednesday’s 3-0 victory over Santos. Stoffels got the rookie club off to the perfect start when he scored after just two minutes, his eighth goal of the season after netting a brace against Santos. Saal scored for the third consecutive match when he netted just before the break, the goal proving to be the final one of the match. Milano United were the earliest to settle, threatening after two minutes into the game with their self-belief and deft touches unmatched, the visitors knew that they were

Well placed Both the UWC’s teams, men and women, won their respective USSA Western Cape Football Leagues this year. The men’s side ended their campaign on 15 points, above the second-placed University of Cape Town, who were followed by Cape Peninsula University of Technology in third place. The women’s side ended their season on top form too, boasting a 20 point finish, five points above the Cape Peninsula of Technology’s 15 points, with UCT in third position with 13 points. Santos drew 0-0. The best chance of the game saw Riaan Eugene failing to get a decisive touch with his header on Jonathan Armogam’s cross a few minutes before the break.

in for a serious test. There was also a first league defeat of the season for pace-setters Mpumalanga Black Aces as they went down 1-0 to Thanda Royal Zulu in Richards Bay. “This is a moment of truth and I am not going to get excited that the top team lost ground,” said the coach Theo Hempe. There was no such joy for fellow Cape Town side Vasco Da Gama whose recent run of inconsistent form continued with a 1-1 draw against FC AK at Parow Park. On Sunday in a clash between the two teams that were relegated from the Absa Premiership last season, Jomo Cosmos and
