Landscapers scam Bishop Lavis family GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

T

wo families in Bishop Lavis want to warn the public about a new scam relating to landscaping doing the rounds in the community. What should have been an enhancement to their homes has turned into an eyesore and loss of money. Promises of promotions and deals for featuring as a showhouse have turned to nought for these families and there are fears that the scamsters may be moving to other surrounding areas. In the first case Sylvie Stevens was approached and thought that she was getting the deal of a lifetime. “I have always wanted to do something about the sand in front of our house,” she says. “Last week, out of the blue I was visited by a woman calling herself Kimberly who told me about the landscaping and paving services that they offer. “I originally wanted to know what it would cost to have the front section tarred but then she gave me a story about how our facebrick house needed something different. “She convinced me that because our house would be used as a “show” house to highlight their work, they had a special type of stone that would match the house. Because the house would be used as a showhouse we would also be getting it at a special price,”she says. Stevens was also convinced of their since-

rity when they pointed out that they did not want a deposit, you paid when they were finished. “Unfortunately on the day that they came to do the work I was not home, and my husband paid them the R2 500, for what he thought was a job in progress, but they did not even give him a receipt. “They even wanted an extra R500 to add an extra ‘gloss’ finish and when he did not have it they started reducing the price. “When I got home I was horrified to see what they had done. It was just gravel that had been spread in front of the house. “It was nothing like what they showed me in their books, and my husband then said that they had wet it telling him that the “cement” would set and keep the stones in place. “Look at it, it’s all just coming loose,” she pointed out. James Johannes also fell for the same story when the same people offered to make a difference to his driveway. “We have cemented our driveway and yard, but there were some holes that needed filling,” he said. “These people approached me with the same story of how they could enhance it by filling the holes and adding a new product that will make it look like it has been tarred. “On the first day they came and filled the holes with tar, and tarred the front section near the road, but then it all went wrong when they spread what was supposed to be the “new”coating.”

Help police find Abdul Baasit

Prof Eugene Cloete, Vice Rector: Research & Innovation and Albert Mpazayabo.

At the time he was wearing his school uniform. He is of average build with brown eyes (with black mole mark in right eye), he has black hair, is approximately 75kg and 1.8m tall. Cotton picking story

Celine Mazonki may not be singing about “them old cotton fields back home” but she is proud of the crop that she has managed to cultivate in her garden. Her love for growing cotton, only for decorative purposes she insists, began when the family picked up some seeds on a trip to Upington. Those grew for a while but eventually died and on their next trip to the area she bought some proper seeds and loves showing off her plants.

After fleeing Rwanda, Albert Mpazayabo found himself working as a parking attendant in Cape Town. But he had bigger dreams. Albert now holds a trio a tertiary qualifications: a degree in Psychology, a postgraduate diploma in HIV/Aids Management and, most recently, received his Master’s degree. Albert was one of 685 students in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at Stellenbosch University (SU) who were awarded their degrees on 1 April. “He already holds a Postgraduate Diploma in HIV/AIDS Management from SU, a BPsych degree from the University of the Western Cape and he is currently doing his Postgraduate Diploma in Monitoring and Evaluation Methods, also at SU,” Martin Viljoen from the university stated. The 51-year-old, who hails from Kigali, was a training officer in productive health care for the Red Cross in Rwanda, but when the war started in 1990, he had to flee for his life, Martin said. “He ended up at a refugee camp in the DRC and from there came to South Africa in 1997. Once in South Africa, he started working as a security guard, then as a parking attendant at various shopping centres in Cape Town.” These days, Albert, a father of three, is in charge of placing other parking attendants at shopping centres in Brackenfell and Durbanville. While this is not Albert’s ideal job, he struggles

to find employment suited to his education. “It’s tough being a foreigner. I’m legal here, and I’m allowed to work in South Africa, but unfortunately most jobs are for South African citizens only,” says Albert. “Over the years I have often felt discouraged. I have the skills that are needed, but the system does not allow me to be useful or add value to those who are in need. But despite the many setbacks I will never give up. As long as I’m still breathing, I have hope.” Albert says he plans on registering with the Health Professional Council of South Africa, then setting up a consultancy this year where he can work as a community mental health worker – finally putting his BPsych degree to good use. In the meantime he’ll continue with his studies and next year plans on tackling a PhD in the field of Monitoring and Evaluation. “I’ve decided that if nobody wants to give me a job, I will create work for myself.” he says. “The fact that I’m not in my motherland forces me to do better. “Here I have no mom or dad or aunt or uncle to help me out, so you realise quickly that in order to succeed, you must do things for yourself. And this is what I’m doing here – pushing myself. My hard work must also serve as an inspiration to my children.” V The ceremonies are streamed live at www.sun.ac.za/strea ming

Family devastated by fire The angels of Little Angels Educare in Greenlands showed that they cared about the Hansen family by managing to collect some clothing and food which they donated to the family. Mercia Esterhuizen from Little Angels hands over the donations to one of the family members in front of the shell of their home. The Hansen family in Greenlands lost all their possessions when their house was destroyed by a fire recently. The Hansens in Plane Street are seen here in the ruins of their house that was destroyed when an apparent electrical fault caused the fire. While family and friends in the community are trying to assist with food and a place to stay, they need help rebuilding their lives. “What they initially explained to me was not what they were producing. It just looked like a type of black oil or paint that they were applying and it looked horrible. “When I questioned them about it they told me that they would spray it with water and it would get the proper affect. As you can see it has not happened and now I have to have this whole area re-done, but this time I am getting a reputable company.” Both families tried calling the number on the card they were given and were at first given the runaround about coming to redo the work, but then there were no replies from that number. “At first they said they did not know the people who worked here, and then they stopped answering their phone,” said Johannes.

A local bank is taking its services into the community to make banking easier for residents. Representatives from Capitec Bank visited Nooitgedacht recently to assist residents in opening accounts. This initiative took place in co-operation with local ward councillor Nas Abrahams who approached the bank when he discovered the needs of many of the residents in the area. “During my work in the area I discovered that there were still many people who did not have a bank account,” he said. “Sometimes we use people from the community in some of our projects for the city, but we have to pay them into a bank account.

“Many of them just did not have the time to go to a bank so I approached Capitec to ask how they could help and immediately made my offices available to them for this project.” Faye Meyer, operations manager for the bank, explained that initiatives like these were part of their policy of providing their low cost, high interest on savings Global One Bank account to community members. “Our single solution to money management assists every South African in their endeavours to ensure they manage their money well and are rewarded through maintaining a positive savings balance. “We provide their bank cards immediately onsite and the accounts are active immediately. Providing this convenient service saves our clients the expense of travelling to a bank branch,” she says. V For more information call Meyer on 072 542 3050.

Ervaar vinnig verwerping; .

V Kontak dr. ST Potgieter by 021 949 5007 of st@pitkos.co.za.

“Ek was by die huis toe my buurman kom kuier het.

Libraries celebrate reading GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

With the Inter-district reading competition for grade 7 learners in full swing, the 11th Annual Reading Competition at Valhalla Park Library was marked by a celebration of books and reading on World Book Day on Wednesday 23 April. World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading in over 100 countries. Valhalla Park Library aims to have greater social impact through the promotion of books and reading for individual’s personal enrichment and enjoyment. This reading programme and partnership runs across schools, community organisations, corporate and government departments. The competition is a City of Cape Town Library and Information Services initiative which started at Valhalla Park Library 11 years ago. The city’s library services continually strives to empower communities through

creating access to the services and resources required for information, research, education, culture and recreation. Ward councillor Michael Britz, a guest speaker at the competition, emphasised the importance of parents reading to their children from a young age and that this competition builds learners’ confidence in reading, writing and public speaking. Another speaker, Izak de Vries from Lapa publishers, demonstrated storytelling and reading techniques to the learners. Learners from Valpark, Kalksteenfontein, Montana, Parkvale and Montevideo primary schools were given a passage to read from a book and were tested on spelling, comprehension, speed and presentation. There are three rounds in the City of Cape Town Library and Information Services competition: round one is the library challenge, round two is the district challenge, and round three is the inter-district final where all the winners from across Cape Town compete.

Elsies River Library also hosted their reading competition and Rosa Fölscher from Goodwood library and Ian Gordon, senior librarian at Leonsdale, stand with the winners in the Afrikaans category. From left are Shergonay November (first), Caylin Arries (second) and Nadene Zass (third).

Racist Le Roux then allegedly called him a black racist, upon which Gwe responded by saying: “In that case then so are you…” According to the written report Smigelaar filed after the incident, three other vehicles, one from Titanium Security, one from Bolt Security and one from SJC Security then also pulled up next to the men. According to the report, an officer from Titanium confronted Gwe and wanted to search him. “I asked him on what grounds he wanted to search me and the next moment he grabbed my wrist and I pushed him away.” Smigelaar’s report described the events as follows. “…the armed response officer grabbed the guy (Gwe) and a fight started between them, whereby they threw each other on my vehicle and damaged my right side fender. The black guy was hit by the armed response officers of SJC, Titanium as well as the neighbourhood watch (member)! I then told these guys…that I think the situation was under control but they would not listen.” Gwe says he was hit in the face, which broke his glasses, on the head and on the legs with a baton, and with a wooden walking stick. After Smigelaar managed to stop the fight the men waited for the police next to the street, where, according to Gwe the officer from Bolt Security kept him safe until the police arrived. “After a 45 minute wait, with the police still not in sight, the officers left and my sister, who in the meantime arrived at the scene, and I left to go to the police station,” said Gwe. His sister Siphokazi told TygerBurger she was shocked to hear what one of the persons on the scene told her brother. “As I arrived there, I heard the man tell Jongikhaya that he was ‘a Malema’. My brother looked terrible, he had an injury on his head and his shirt was torn,” she said. Gwe laid a chareg of assault GBH and Le Roux, along with an armed response officer, have since appared in the Kuilsriver Magistrate’s Court.

Johannesburg attorney is preparing to bring charges of human rights violations and a civil suit against a local neighbourhood watch member and two Brackenfell armed response officers after what he describes as a vicious attack against him on Good Friday. A keen runner, Jongikhaya Gwe (42), visited the Mother City to take part in the Two Oceans Marathon and stayed with his sister Siphokazi Hans, who lives in Protea Heights. The alleged attack on him occurred at about 09:00 when he went for a stroll in the neighbourhood. “I was dressed in my running shoes, a Comrades Marathon jacket and cap as I set off for my walk. While in Jacaranda Street, a white Tata Bakkie stopped next to me and the driver, Pieter Le Roux asked me what I was doing there and if I worked in the area. “I told him I was taking a walk, after which he told me I was not allowed to walk in the area without his permission and that he wanted to see my ID document,” Gwe told TygerBurger last week.

Suspicious black guy “I told Le Roux that I did not have my ID document on me and walked away, turning into Mimosa Street.” At this point a vehicle from Capital Security arrived in Mimosa Street, apparently after the armed response was contacted by Le Roux and informed of a “suspicious black guy in the area”. Gwe said the armed response officer, Conrad Smigelaar, approached him and asked him where he was from. “I explained to him that I was in town for the run and staying with my sister and gave him my sister’s address. He then assured me that everything was fine,” said Gwe. But then, according to Gwe, Le Roux walked up to them and allegedly told Gwe, that he was “’n fokken harde gat”, and again demanded to see his ID. “I told him that the era of apartheid was long gone and that he did not have the right to demand my ID document, just for wal-

Family needs help after fire

The Chestnut Place Committee in Belhar helped the Esterhuizen family whose flat was almost completely destroyed in a fire last week. Fortunately, members of the City’s Extended Public Works Programme were on hand when the fire broke out and helped extinguish it before it got out of control and affected the whole block. While noone was injured, the family lost most of their beds, appliances, clothing and cooking equipment. The committee is thus calling on the community to help the family with donations. Berenice Barnard, left, chairperson of the committee, here hands over some groceries to the family. Other members of the committee and workers who helped extinguish the fire stand behind her. Sanggroep wy harte, lewens aan Here GARY VAN DYK

Top music award for Settlers’ pupil Caron Tremble’s fingers have no trouble extracting music from either the piano or the bassoon. Because of her love of musical notes, Caron, in grade 12 at Settlers High school in Bellville, has earned herself a coveted annual meritorious award. “Caron was awarded the Hennie Joubert Merit Prize for her UNISA grade 7 piano examination in 2013,” said Ilse Koeslag, Caron’s private music teacher from Loevenstein. “This prize is awarded anually by UNISA to the top three achievers per grade for all insruments countrywide. Caron obtained a mark of 94% for this examination,” Ilse said. “Caron has been playing the piano for 12 years. She started in grade 1 at St Augustine Primary school, Wynberg. Her favourite composer is Chopin because his music is so beautiful, but yet very challenging,” saud Ilse. “Caron has always had a piano at home and when she was small the instrument fascinated her and she would always play on it. She could play melodies by ear after hearing them in church on Sundays or pieces her sisters would play.” According to Ilse, the young lady is also and excellent bassoonist.

Caron Tremble “She played her grade 7 UNISA examination for this instrument last year and obtained 88%. The two instruments keep her very busy. She hopes to study music after school, but if this does not happen, she will never stop playing the piano.”

Anoniem V I refer to Dr Sean Daniel’s letter “Alcohol advertising leaving sour taste” (TB letters, 16 April). Thanks for speaking out against this evil in our society. We agree: it’s totally distasteful. But I guess when sales and money are concerned, morals don’t matter Anonymous V Ek wil vir sers. Sopazi en konst. Amagu van die Parow-polisie (sektor 3) bedank. Hulle het my verlede jaar gehelp toe ek myself uit my woonstel gesluit het. Mev. Moedeloos V I absolutely agree with Zelda Versfeld. Wild animals do not belong in a circus. Tenants should call city about refuse The City of Cape Town has a monthly tariff for refuse removal at formal properties of R90,61 (excluding VAT) which is for the account of the owner of the property (TB SMSes, 2 April). In addition to ensuring the adequacy and availability of specialised vehicles, equipment and other resources to render services, the tariff typically covers the cost of collecting, transporting and disposing of refuse at a properly licensed landfill site. (The complainants) should request an investigation into the refuse billing at the

complex in which they reside. In addition, they should please provide more details to the city so we can properly investigate, such as name of the retirement village, address, and account number. We urge complainants to contact the Call Centre on 0860 103 089 and lodge a query. Sectional title units or flats are entitled to be issued with one bin per flat or unit, which is billed to the owner, flat or Body Corporate. Alternatively, the Body Corporate can request a reduced number of bins, but no fewer than the number of bins equal to one-third of the number habitable units. Padrollerparkie is nou vuil en bemors Toe ek een heerlike sonskynmiddag my kleinkinders na die parkie by die biblioteek in Durbanville neem, moes ons teleurgesteld terug huis toe gaan. Die padrollerparkie was sedert my oudste seun in 1977 klein was, altyd só ’n heerlike speelplek.

Small biz no excuse for bad service Regarding the letter “Small business feels the pinch” (TygerBurger, 23 April). We, too, have a small business – in furniture repair. We supported a small builder to do some paving at our home. From day one, his workers could not run a straight line, never mind pave. After more than two weeks, the paving was done at his expense. Seeing that I deliver quality goods and work hard for my money, I deserve the same. I take it Anonymous is also in the building industry. You obviously have bad planning and poorly skilled workers and, therefore, get complaints. Perhaps follow our motto: goods go out in a perfect condition, returns costs time and money. We don’t advertise, most of our work is from referrals and we can’t keep up. Change your business plan instead of complaining and making all small business look bad and incompetent. Our story about the Elsies River man who is using solar and wind power for his household electrical needs (Tygerburger Wednesday 2 April) got Belhar Primary interested to find out more on the subject. They invited Todd Lambert to their school and he was only too happy to give the learners some insight into how solar power is making a difference in his life, and the difference it is going to make in the world’s power needs in future. Todd Lambert, right, did more than just a presentation of solar power at Belhar Primary recently. He will be making a difference in the lives of Mujahied Jafefa, left, and Sesethu Felaphi from the Malawi informal settlement who will now be able to study at night thanks to a solar powered light Lambert donated to them. A man who introduces himself as a TygerBurger deliveryman, Ricardo Bester, is collecting money in Goodwood for his mother’s funeral. Bester states in an affidavit, signed and stamped by the Parow police station, that his wheelchair bound mother died in a fire in Clanwilliam.

Tall story Richard Smith, a Goodwood resident, says he believed this story when he heard it the first time and made a contribution. But three weeks later he was presented with another, similar affidavit by the same man, also stamped by the Parow police. Only this time, the mother apparently died in Oudtshoorn. Bester either lost two wheelchair bound mothers in fires within three weeks in different towns, or he was trying his luck. The latter seeming more probable, Smith this time insisted on a death certificate, upon which Bester started threatening him. Smith then phoned the Parow police and learned there are 56 outstanding cases against Ricardo Bester, although the police told him

there could be more than one person by that name. “A couple of weeks ago one of your deliverymen, Cecil Booysen, was collecting money for two of his colleagues who were killed in a stabbing incident,” says a Parow reader, Laurette Nel. She says he had an affidavit stating the story and people were contributing huge amounts. “Yesterday, he came again. This time he had an affidavit stating that his mother died in a fire,” she says. She took pictures of the affidavit, signed and stamped at the Parow police station. This affidavit bears the same handwriting and street address as the one “Bester” presented to Smith in Goodwood. The address on top is in both cases Sage Road, Athlone, although on the one it is number 6 and on the other, number 61. According to Ulrich Steynberg, operations manager at On The Dot, the distribution company for TygerBurger, there is no employee bearing either of the two names at the company. It could be that this trickster is operating under other aliases as well, as other readers phoned the paper over the past weeks with similar stories. A Parow woman says a man claiming to be a driver of the TygerBurger delivery vehicle has an affidavit of many pages relating the tragic death of his mother and sister in a fire in Oudtshoorn.

davit was stamped by the Athlone police. The woman says people on the list contributed up to R200 per person. She gave the man R20, and received a swear word in return.

Affidavits worthless Another reader from Parow North phoned the paper to say someone with a “letter” tried to engage him in conversation about the driver of the TygerBurger delivery vehicle who supposedly stabbed a woman. Steynberg visited the Parow Police to try find out more. He says the police told him any person can obtain a sworn affidavit. “One writes down your story on a provided form, and all the police have to do is to make sure that the ID numbers on the affidavit and in the applicant’s ID book correspond. If they do, the form gets stamped and signed. No copy is made and the affidavit is also not logged anywhere. “I asked the police officer how they can sign an affidavit if there is no ID, and he said as long as the person writes out the affidavit in front of a police officer, they will also sign it. I told him that this is a rather fishy arrangement, and told him that in that case an affidavit is worthless. He agreed,” Steynberg says. He adds that On The Dot, TygerBurger and People’s Post do not support or approve any form of door-to-door donations, begging or collection by their employees.

One of four known sworn affidavits used to collect mony by a conman who claims to work for TygerBurger. The affidavits all state different personal crises for which he needs cash. PHOTO: MAGRIET THERON “We normally make a donation from the company if there is death in the family of an employee and they can present a death certificate,” he says. He asks the public to not support any begging in the name of any of the above companies and that they phone the police immediately if someone does. Garth Hewitt, advertising manager for TygerBurger, says the company will never endorse begging even if there is a police stamp on the form.

It’s “Your Street” says chairman Vos The “Your Street” campaing launched by Subcouncil 3 chairperson James Vos hopes to get residents actively taking care of their surroundings. “I hope residents will begin to recognise the possibilities and potential of the community’s urban spaces and the other features their streets have to offer,” said Vos at the latest subcouncil meeting. “Take a closer look at your street, and then ask yourself: What would I have done?” said Vos. He suggested one place to start would be to report blocked drains and stormwater systems before winter starts. “We all know that regular cleaning and clearing of stormwater drains is a basic service, and an extremely important one. Good James Vos news is that I have received confirmation from the roads and stormwater department that prior to the onset of the rainy season all systems will be cleared and cleaned throughout our

wards. All our roads and stormwater gullies must be cleaned of weeds and litter, and our drain inlets cleared to prevent the potentially dangerous situation of flooded roads,” he said. He said in many cases household waste, including garden cuttings and used motor oil containers, are the main reasons for blockages in the stormwater system. “The fact of the matter is that residents also have a vital role to play in this regard by taking more care of their front verges and gutters as this will prevent the grass and litter from accruing in the drains. It is also important to ask anyone with a garden service to insist that grass cuttings are collected and taken away, instead of being swept down the nearest drain,” he said. V Residents are urged to report blocked stormwa ter systems on 0860 10 30 54 or email water toc@capetown.gov.za.

Tweets affect the real world TygerBurger joined hands with the Twitter Blanket Drive (#TBD) to act as a collection point for donations this year. The Twitter Blanket Drive is a uniquely South African, community-driven response to the needs of the poor during the winter months. The drive started with a single tweet in 2010. Founder, Melanie Minnaar, contemplating the cold winter ahead, tweeted: “What if each person on Twitter donated a blanket?”. Since then, the #TBD movement has grown in leaps and bounds. All efforts promoting the national drive focus on Twitter. All beneficiary organizations are non-profits registered with the Department of Social Development. Collection points and events have been created across the country, some taking the form of a “Tweetup”, whereby Twitter users tweet about donating their blankets and all enjoy a meal or drink at the collection point,

generally a restaurants or cafe. The Twitter Blanket Drive has injected a true sense of community into the South African Twittersphere, as Twitter users join in to help disadvantaged communities keep warm during winter. The Twitter Blanket Drive has also expanded to nearby countries, as seen during 2012, when a Zimbabwe event was held, with great success. There will be “Tweetup” events in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban on Thursday 29 May 2014. The main event in Cape Town will be at the Fire & Ice Hotel in the CBD. Northern Suburbs residents can drop their blankets off at the reception area of TygerBurger’s offices at the Bloemhof Building, on the corner of Bloemhof and Edward Streets in Bellville. hrough his love of horses and his musical talents, local singer Gerald Clark has found a way to help others. Touched by the work that groups like Equitots in Durbanville are doing for children with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), Gerald and retailer Jade & Velvet started the The FASt Forward Fund last year to financially help organisations working with FAS children. Their main focus is to afford young FAS sufferers the chance to work with horses and ponies in a therapy environment. FAS is the result of mothers consuming alcohol during pregnancy. Their children often experience physical, behavioural, developmental and cognitive difficulties. But children receive physical and cognitive benefits from working with horses. It was seeing these benefits that made Gerald want to get involved. “The one little girl, Abigail, stood out for me in particular,” he recalls. Abigail was born prematurely and it was expected she wouldn’t be able to walk due to FAS. “I was there during a session when she was put on a horse and within a few minutes I could see her orientating herself and getting interested in her surroundings.” Besides physical benefits like improved balance, posture and muscle tone, working with horses also seemst to help with “attention span, reasoning skills, memory retention and a host of other cognitive functions”. “The other day I saw her running around, dancing and laughing,” Gerald says of threeyear-old Abigail. “This is a very effective way of helping these kids develop,” he says.

The FASt Forward Fund works together with the Beyers Truter Foetal Alcohol-Syndrome and Interrelated Treatment Help Fund (FAITH). FAITH Fund’s main focus is awareness and warning mothers about the dangers of drinking while pregnant. Gerald has roped in friends in to help raise funds for FASt Forward and they will be joining him on stage at Barnyard Theatre, Willowbridge on Sunday 4 May. Fokofpolisiekar, Valiant Swart, Heinz Winckler, Theo Crous, Luna Paige, Natasha Meister and Guy Collins will make up the all star lineup which will be held together by MC Pietman, who will keep guests entertained between acts. Tickets for the show cost R150 and can be booked on www.barnyardtheatre.co.za or by calling 021 914 8898. V For more information about the FASt Forward Fund, visit their Facebook Page.

Weyers determined to win Northern suburbs local Kosie Weyers, who is currently hot property on the stock car track, is aiming to again burn up the Killarney oval during the exciting V8 races on Saturday. After a magnificent national season last year that resulted in him crowned South African Engen Volkswagen Champion, the flamboyant Kosie has decided to remain on home turf this season and concentrate on winning the coveted Tygerberg Engine Rebuilders big V8 title. It hasn’t been easy. Certainly not when there are drivers like veteran Martin Neethling, Steven Heydenrych and Mark Fontini to contend with. Fontini in particular could be the joker in the pack. Despite missing all earlier events, he raced back to finish second overall last month. On the fairer side, the ladies have caused an upset by taking over the Andre Groenewald Motors Mini class for the aspiring young champions of the future. Here teenager Kayla Jones is a narrow three points ahead of former class leader James Bain and Corne Esterhuizen, with demure Michaela van Tonder not far behind in fourth place. While other girls in this category include Abigail Cope and Daniella de Sousa, all eyes will be on Bain, who is determined to regain the lead on Saturday, in what has become a particularly hard fought championship.

The tearaway Kosie Weyers is determined to keep his powerful BMW V8 in front of all the American based V8’s on the oval track at Killarney on Saturday. PHOTO: DAVE COLLINS The threat from the women extends to the senior Mayfair Nationwide Clubman class. Here Sandra Erasmus, despite the distinction of being the first lady driver to win a stock car title, finds herself down in

seventh place after missing two rounds in the title chase earlier this season. However, she is back in action and the championship leader Quintin Saayman will have to be at his best if he wants to keep her be-

hind him. Other events on the late afternoon programme include races for the Cape Peninsula Panelbeaters 1660 class, McCarthy Toyota 2.1 Modified class and single seater Midgets.

SUPERLIGA: BELLVILLE SKRAAP DEUR TEEN BELHAR

Onreg teen NNK-span SAREL BURGER

W
