Stand easy stand with pride The Western Province Schools Marching Drill and Exhibition Association hosted the WP Schools Mini Tattoo and competition at Florida Park Sports Field in Ravensmead on Saturday. While the team from Elsies River High School, seen here getting into the mood for the Grand Exhibition March with their drum major Mathew Groepies, may not have been going for a long time (they started this year), they walked off with the trophy as overall winners of the competition. School closure anger GARY VAN DYK

As school closures in the community continue to anger the public more mystery is emerging relating to the reasons behind these moves by the education department. With 20 schools closing in the Western Cape four schools in the immediate area are being affected. The community has reacted with anger to the news that Lavis Drive

Primary (Bishop Lavis), Valpark Primary (Valhalla Park), Protea Primary (Bonteheuwel), and Beauvallon High in Valhalla Park will be closed at the end of the year. At various meetings held since the announcement, parents, teachers, and community organisations are calling for stronger legal action to prevent this because they feel that the proper consultation was not done. Park Primary on Saturday, Frank van der Horst, one of the speakers pointed out that this decision by the education department should be rejected. “When the announcement of the closures was made last week, parents and teachers were astounded because they realised that the submissions that they made at the socalled hearings had been ignored,” he said. “We have subsequently found out that these hearings were a farce be-

cause decisions had been made long before the hearings at individual schools. “At one of these hearings an official could already tell people that Peakview Secondary was staying open, while Protea Primary would be closing. “What also angers the community is that they were told, not consulted, about the closure of these schools citing recommendations from officials. These recommendations although requested, have nev-

er been made public. “Instead they gave us symptoms as reasons for closure, dwindling numbers, poor results, bad infrastructure, but these are common to thousands of schools in the education system.” During this meeting it also emerged that plans for these closures had been in the pipeline for some time. While a new principal had been appointed to “pull” a school right in April this year. . To page 2

ACHMAT EBRAHIM STADSBESTUURDER

betrokke is by die projek.

Community fights closures . From page 1 There was no money available for much-needed maintenance work for them. Another concerned resident pointed out that at one of the meetings in Bonteheuwel an official pointed out more adult learning centres were needed because “all you saw in Bonteheuwel was young girls with babies on every corner.” “How can they make a statement like that?” she said. “Have they done a survey to back up a statement like this!” Irma Titus, another young education activist in the area said that it was also important to see how the learners themselves were taking these closures.

“It has seriously affected them because they think that it is something that they have done wrong that led to these closures,” she said. “Here in Bonteheuwel they even took to the streets to protest the action and I think that in some cases there will have to be some serious counselling with them to make them believe in their education again. “It is even more despicable when you realise that these decisions were made when learners were engaged in assessment exams at most schools.” Various organisations will be meeting this week to decide on legal action against the Western Cape Education Department to fight the closures.

Cops nab shooter in minutes Police are reacting quickly to shooting incidents in the community. Swift response resulted in the arrest of one suspect within minutes, after a shooting incident outside the Bellville Magistrate’s Court at about 09:30 on Tuesday 16 Octber. The victim, a 27-year-old man from Delft, who was the accused in a case involving drugs was outside the court when a gunman shot him in the head from close range. His attacker fled the scene in a green Audi A4 in an unknown direction.

Shortly thereafter, SAPS members from Bishop Lavis noticed a green Audi driving wildly. When the driver spotted the SAPS vehicle, he tried to speed away from police. Unfortunately, in his attempt to get away, he crashed the vehicle into a house in Valhalla Park. Luckily no one was injured in the accident, but the driver, also 27, was taken in for questioning, while investigation into the court shooting continues.

A social work student is making sure that learners with special needs know about health issues and abuse. Mxolisi Mangxola is a third year student from UWC doing his practicals at the Oasis School for Learners with Special Educational Needs and he hosted a special awareness programme at the school last week. “I felt that it was important to host this presentation for the learners because even with their special needs they are not immune to the dangers involving HIV/Aids, physical abuse and even teenage pregnancies that exist in the communities where they live,” he said. “Part of this project was also to create an environment that will enable learners, parents, staff and community members to work together without excluding each other. “Since many of the learners from this facility are often excluded from mainstream society, the focus of the project is to create awareness about social inclusion. “We also hosted speakers who spoke to the children about reducing the stigma and discrimination around HIV/Aids and reduce factors that make people vulnerable to HIV/ Aids. “Abuse was also part of the discussion and we wanted to let the children know their rights and that there are resources available to them if they feel threatened in any way.” Mangxola also pointed out that after the successful presentation at the school he would like to thank the school for their support to host the event. “Oasis Special School is in need of support and it is doing its best to meet the needs of the learners but there are challenges.” For further information about the needs at the school contact 021 952 2100 or email admin@oasis.wcape.school.za or contact Mangxola at mangxola@gmail.com.

Stopping for stationery Bramble Way Primary School in Bonteheuwel received a stationery donation worth R5 000 thanks to a chance conversation in a meeting between Merriman Lions president Clive Fox and the marketing department at Good Hope FM (GHFM). A small idea grew in momentum and then suddenly Lions and Absa representatives, joined by GHFM personalities, caused quite a stir at the school. During the obligatory speeches, GHFM marketing manager, Meegan Keiffer, stressed the importance of education in order to be successful in life. One of the poorer schools in the Cape Metropole, Bramble Way is 50 years old this

year but it has little to celebrate. Through an acute shortage of funds and rapidly deteriorating buildings which are in urgent need of repairs and a quality paint job both inside and out, the school is in need of some serious maintenance, which is a costly affair. Many of the 275 learners need external support through food security services (part of which is provided by the We Care Feeding Project located in the same road). It is operated by a husband and wife team and a reliable food source for needy learners and local residents alike. The project and the school is ably supported by Merriman Lions Club, which is based in the vicinity of Goodwood.

Yay! New stationery GARY VAN DYK

Four students from UWC are making a real difference at a primary school in Belhar. As part of a project to complete their degrees in Business Commerce Aminah de Kock, Nasreen Julius, Achmad Domingo and Nicole Frechtas combined their talents to start the Adopt-a-Grade project. De Kock explained that the Adopt-a-Grade team was established in July this year to complete an assignment on Project Management. “The project instructions required us to identify a problem in the community and implement a solution, which sounds pretty simple,” she said. “However, we were expected to use the tools taught in the module and initiate, plan, execute and close off the project physically and not just as a proposal on paper. “As students we strongly believe in the saying that: ‘knowledge is power’ and identified our community problem as under-education. “Our solution to under-education stemmed from its cause being the lack of learning materials and we therefore planned to ‘adopt a grade’ of scholars from a school that lacked the basic stationery needed to enable its learning facilitators to educate learners and provide the adopted grade with sta-

tionery.” In order to fund the project the Adopt-aGrade team approached several companies for donations and purchased stationery including, writing books, pencils, mathematical sets and calculators to supply the entire Grade 3 class at the Dr Van de Ross Primary School in Belhar. “While the project may have been started to pass a module it has definitely impacted the lives of the Adopt-a-Grade team and all parties affected by the outcome of the project as well as boost the aptitude of the kids,” continued De Kock. “Therefore we would like to express our gratitude to the staff at the school for welcoming us and we would like to show our appreciation to Extreme Fast foods, Steelworld, Victoria Park Butchery, Desmond Frecthas, Mickey, Najwah De kock, Faldielah Gassiep, Baderiya Fakir, Abdullah Fakier, Nadia Haroun and the Davis, Domingo and Shira Families for all their generous contributions. “They played a huge role in helping the project achieve its goal, through enabling us to donate six boxes filled with stationery. “After the successful execution of the project, the team has come to the realisation that a pencil is not only an instrument for writing, it also symbolises a tool of empowerment, it equips scholars with the ability to build a strong foundation to a much brighter future.”

Watch out the Teen Trojans are coming ESME ERASMUS

Step aside Gladiators! Here come the Teen Trojan Warriors of the Durbanville Children’s Home! Thirteen children of the children’s home have been doing situps and push-ups and several other body strengthening exercises to strut their stuff as possible Teen Trojan Warriors at the Fairmont Festival this weekend. “They love it and want to prove themselves,” said Bernadette Beyer, chief executive officer and founder of Trojan Warriors, a programme similar to the popular Gladiators. Beyer was elected as Mrs Fitness in 2011 and was known as the gladiator Diamond in the reality show Gladiators. “Although they train for only one hour a week on Monday, I can already see the difference,” Beyer said after the fourth week of the children’s body weight training, which is sponsored by Trojan Warriors. All the exercises are performed using their own body weight and can easily be practised on the climbing frame at the children’s home, she said. She plans to continue with the warrior training. “The children have already asked what will happen after Saturday. They often see people come and go in their lives. I want to continue with their fitness training, even after Teen Trojan

Warriors, for as long as possible,” she said. “It can open up opportunities for them with careers in the fitness industry,” she said. She also trains them in healthy eating habits. These children will do their tryouts at the festival at Fairmont High School on Saturday 27 October from 10:00 to 18:00. With the first series, the search is on for people who think they have what it takes to fight up to ultimate “Trojan Warrior status” in the live show that will be held next year in the June school holidays at the Grand Arena at GrandWest. Trojan Warrior try-outs will be presented in two categories at the Fairmont Festival from 09:00 until 17:00 – a category for Teen Trojans from children 13 to 17 years old and a category for 18 years and older. Adults and teen competitors can also take part in try-outs on Saturday 24 November from 09:00 to 17:00 at Ratanga Junction at Century City. The top 46 “teen boys” and 46 “teen girls” in the Western Cape will be selected for this show. The next series of tryouts will take place in Durban and then in Johannesburg. Entry forms and more information are available on www.trojanwarriors.co.za.

About 13 children from the Durbanville Children’s Home are training to perform their best on Saturday in the ‘Teen Trojan Warriors’ competition. Bernadette Beyer shows one of the boys how to do a proper stretch. The names of the children are withheld for their own protection.

Skipping rope is one way of getting fitter. Here children of the Durbanville children’s home are training as ‘Teen Trojan Warriors’ under the watchful eye of Bernadette Beyer. Police in Delft are looking for help in finding 33-year-old Alvina November, who lived at 11 Anaboom Street, Delft, and been missing since 3 October. The only information that the police have is that she has been missing since leaving her two-yearold baby in the care of her sister. Police are also looking for her 34year-old husband, Elvin November, who is also missing and can assist in the investigation of his missing wife.

Brave face as cancer reappears While children all over the country wished to get a bandana in their favourite colour to wear to school last week to raise money for the Sunflower Fund, all a little girl of Oakdale wished for is not to be sick so that she can just go to school. The parents of Emma Fourie (9) are still trying to absorb the devastating news that her aggressive cancer has returned after almost four years of ongoing surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Emma was first diagnosed with cancer in 2008 – only six months after her sister, Alex (5), was born

with an abnormal heart condition. “We were still frail from the first bad news, when I discovered one day, whilst bathing Emma, that she had a hard lump in her left buttock,” Emma’s mother, Natalie, said. “After an MRI scan and biopsy, the lump turned out to be cancerous – a sort of cancer of the soft tissue.” Twenty weeks of chemotherapy followed, of which Emma spent 14 weeks in hospital. That was followed with six weeks of radiation therapy. “By week three the top layer of her skin looked like third degree burns. The skin was so raw, we had

All 64 children of the Kids Can Pre-Primary School bought a bandana for Bandana Day and raised R1 300 for the Sunflower Fund. One of the children in the school is Emma’s cousin – Emma suffers from cancer. to give her strong pain medication just to let her go to toilet,” she said. After radiation, more chemotherapy followed, totalling 16 months of treatment. Thereafter, Emma had to go for a three-monthly MRI scan, X-rays and blood tests. “Everything was going well. Emma started Grade 1 at Gene Louw Primary and enjoyed her dance lessons. We were planning to go on a trip with some friends,” she said. When Emma went for her normal MRI scan and check-ups in January 2011, they suspected nothing. However, another tumour was discovered and Emma had to be operated on for the tumour to be removed. “Due to financial reasons, as we were still trying to recover from last time, we had to change medical aids. Our new medical aid has given us a 12 month exclusion on cancer for Emma. So, we then had to fund everything ourselves. “The expenses were big. In only five months our hospital account ran up to almost R100 000. I’m so terrified that they will stop Emma’s treatment as we cannot afford to pay,” she said. She had six sessions of intense chemotherapy. However, it was decided radiation poses major risks as the tumour extended into the pelvic wall. In October that year another tumour was discovered. She went for surgery in November to try and remove the tumour in five and a half hours of surgery. Emma had then undergone 23 sessions of radiation. This was once

Emma is bravely trying to keep up with her schoolwork. again followed by chemotherapy. “She was able to go to the first day of Grade 2 this year – she really enjoyed it. Due to her treatment schedules, she was only able to go to school until the end of February.” In the last week of February she commenced with chemotherapy. She suffered very bad side effects. The final chemotherapy session was completed in July this year and the radiologist confirmed that all the scans are clear. However, in September, Emma started complaining that her back was sore. Another tumour was found in the bone of Emma’s spine. “We immediately had to start her on steroids to try and reduce the swelling. Shortly after, they discovered another tu-

mour in the bone of a vertebra, that is busy encroaching on the nerve of her spine, causing the pain in her back. They also found a recurrence of the old tumour in the pelvic region. There are also three visible lesions in the liver – one the size of a golf ball. “The oncologists and radiologists do not see any cure this time around. They gave her 10 sessions of radiation. “We are exploring some alternative non-invasive treatments. Also to keep her on a good diet and pray, pray, pray for a miracle,” she said. Financially this puts strain on the family. Anyone who wishes to assist, can send an email to Natalie at natalief477@gmail.com.

Broodjie in oond sonder sweet Wie kan ’n snytjie louwarm, varsgebakte brood weerstaan? Min mense, glo ek. Tuisgebakte brood sonder knie: 7 koppies (1 kg) meel 2 teelepels (10 ml) sout 1 pakkie (10 g) suurdeeg (gis) 4 koppies sterk louwarm water Verhit oond tot 180 ˚C. Meng droë bestanddele, voeg sterk louwarm water by en meng goed deur. Kontak Louise met navrae by 021 591 8391.

A Job Fair meeting will be held on Friday 26 October at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 09:00 to 16:00. The purpose of the event is to create an opportunity for work seekers to meet prospective employers and other organisations that can assist with placing them in different forms of employment. Work seekers can obtain company and career information and may even get an interview. However, the main goal is to get interviews at companies shortly after the Job Fair. Minister of Labour, Mildred Oliphant and the Department of Labour will assist in placing unemployed people, with the required skills, in various areas of employment during the day. The event will also provide the Minister of Labour with a platform to make new announcements on employment matters. The job fair is free and open to the public. Free career workshops, CV critiques and registration for workseekers will be available throughout the day. Work seekers will need approximately two hours to talk with company representatives. Prospective job applicants are encouraged to dress professionally, bring 10 to 15 copies of their CVs, prepare a brief summary of their skills and to ask any questions they may have.

Dit is beskikbaar by www.cultivaria.com of by 021 872 9754. WEN! WEN! WEN! . SMS’e kos R1,50.

Don’t miss this bazaar Saint Nicholas Anglican Church in Halt Road, Elsies River is having their annual bazaar on Saturday 3 November. Starting at 8:00 there will be a variety of stalls where you can sample a variety of cakes, toffee apples, seafood, cooldrinks, braai and slaai, as well as shop at the vegetable stall for some bargains. There will also be horse rides and a jumping castle for the children plus lots of entertainment, such as drummies, rap, line dancing, and keep-fit demonstrations. Highlights also include the annual Glamourous Granny Competition, an American Auction and much more. All welcome.

Stappers presteer Die nasionale stapkampioene.

Run! There’s still time to get into gear for the walk and run against crime that will be hosted by the Bishop Lavis Primary School on Saturday. Principal Steven Lesch, left, is seen here encouraging Wayne Hendricks, institutional management and governance manager for the Metro North District of the WCED to participate as learners, teachers and members of the SAPS start a practise run. There will be 8 km (R10) and 5 km (R5) events starting at 08:30 and 09:00 respectively, with registration also available from 06:00 on the day. For more information call Kevin Bosman on 083 761 3430 or Brian Daniels on 078 821 7381.

Edgemead (153) is baie goed geplaas teen Bellville-Suid (82).

Well done: Bishop Lavis High School is ve-

ry proud of their latest WP athlete. Shawn Jonkers, a Grade 11 learner, was recently chosen to represent the province at the Cross Country Nationals that took place in Rustenberg. He is seen here being congratulated for his achievement by principal Walter Ephraim.

Vasco open on a high THOMAS CAROLUS

Vasco Da Gama open their season on a high note when they beat Witbank Spurs 3-0 in a National First Division league match at Parow Park on Sunday afternoon.

Great victory in strong wind LEON STEENKAMP

A blistering south-easter made things very tough on cyclists who took part in Sunday’s Tiletoria West Coast Express cycle event in Sunningdale. Although it was no pleasure on the ride back from Atlantis it proved helpful for this year’s winner of the 85 km men’s Elite group Dave Garrett. Riding for Team Focus, Garrett was part of the early break-away group of five riders. “We attacked after about 15 km into the race, just after the Koeberg Power Station on the R27,” Garrett said. “Then we dropped one rider. After about 50 km Carl Pasio from RSA Web joined the leading bunch. At this stage when had about a 40 second lead on the chasing bunch,” he said of the route that took the riders all the way out to Mamre.

At the 65 km mark the leading group lost its lead somewhat with the other riders breathing down their necks trailing by only 10 seconds. “Then I attacked again and opened up a gap of about one minute which I kept all the way to the finish,” he said of his win in 2:05:30. “It was a head-wind all the way back so we really suffered but luckily the teams couldn’t get organised with this head-wind so I managed to keep the tempo and keep them at bay,” Garrett said. The chasing bunch saw a sprint to the finish with Reniell Matthysen (Intellibus) crossing the line in second place 30 seconds after Garrett. David’s Focus team mate Kyle Donachie from Durbanville came in third. . Visit www.tygerburger.co.za for a clip of the event.

& RELATED ADVERTISERS

The home team dominated right from the start, but had to wait until the fifth minute to open the scoring when midfielder Zeka Karkee crashed home a rather brilliant close range shot. Geofrey Serunkuma made it 2-0 before the break, and from there the Parow side should have buried Witbank Spurs in an avalanche of goals, with the chances they created, but poor finishing meant there was no further improvement on the score before halftime. However, they improved after the break and dominated the second half, even though they were only able to increase their lead by one more goal through John Karkee in the 84th minute with a well taken header. The former Hanover Park player benefited from great set-up play by the likes of Gareth Ncaca and Roberto Do Santo, while goalkeeper Kyle Peters was another star for Vasco Da Gama, keeping a clean sheet with some excellent saves to ensure Witbank Spurs never had the slightest chance of a comeback. Sibusiso Mbonani the Witbank Spurs defen-

der was given the red card for kicking Sici Shelembe in the 70th minute. “It will always be difficult to play the first game of the season, especially with a number of new players that we have in the squad but we managed to get three points and that’s important,” says the Vasco Da Gama coach Antonio De Nobrega. Engen Santos played to a goalless draw away to FC Cape at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Kimberley on Saturday afternoon. Both teams started at a fast pace and there were scoring chances from the opening minutes. Though the “People’s Team’’ dominated most of the match and hit the crossbar through Salmaan King in the second half, they were unable to capitalise on the chances they created. Both teams had strong penalty appeals turned down. One minute before the end Mzuvele Skhosana was given the red card for elbowing Nasief Morris. Nooij Martinus the Santos coach would have preferred to start with a win away from home, but was pleased they managed to get a point after all. “FC Cape are a good team and others who come here will struggle to get a good results against them,” he said.
