Kidnap hoax trauma

A local ward councillor had more than protesting residents of informal settlements to worry about on Monday. While protesters caused havoc with traffic and damage to traffic lights and roads in the areas around Malawi Camp and Freedom Farm, local councillor Asa Abrahams of Ward 24, had to contend with what seemed to be a hostage drama that threatened the welfare of a worker in one of her projects in one of the informal settlements.

It has since been uncovered as a hoax, but for most of Monday it had the councillor worried about the welfare of the worker. Abrahams said that the drama started unfolding on Monday morning when she received a call from the person who she knew and she was told that members of the community had taken her hostage. “My first concern when I heard this was for her six-month-old baby,” said Abrahams. “I knew that the child was still small and the mother must be worried about the safety of her child. “The reason for this ‘kidnapping’

was because some of the protesters had been arrested for vandalism during the protests that were taking place. “I was told that the people who had been arrested were supposed to be released, and given a deadline to do this or she would be harmed.” Abrahams pointed out that she explained that she had nothing to do with these arrests and that she could not tell the police what to do. “During this conversation I also tried to establish where she was being kept, but could get no response in this regard which I found strange.

“My first concern was for the safety of this person and I had no reason to doubt her statements,” she said. Later on she also received an SMS that stated that “the deadline is over, what is plan B?”, which prompted her to take the threat more seriously and the matter was reported to the police. Captain Joe Wilson, communications officer of the Delft SAPS, confirmed that the charge was laid but investigations revealed that the hostage situation was actually a hoax. “We understand the concerns of

the councillor and the trauma that she went through while she still thought that there was a threat, and we also had to react quickly to find out the proper situation. “The caller was found safely in her home, but we are still taking action with further investigation because valuable police resources were wasted during this operation,” he said. While Abrahams was relieved when the safety of the caller was established she was still disappointed that somebody could do something like this for ulterior motives. . To page 2.

House doesn’t get off ground REYANA STEYN

A Delft family is warning people to safeguard themselves after they were allegedly conned by a man who was paid to erect a wendy house for them. The man received all the money totalling R6 000 but after months of waiting and continuous phone calls no work has been done. The family is furious because they asked the man to set up a wendy house for them after he went door to door in the community distributing pamphlets of his work. The man even resorted to allegedly threatening the family after they tried to get their money back. The family has since taken the man to Small Claims Court where they will be appearing next month. “We got the pamphlet in March and it was perfect timing because we were planning on having a wendy house put up on our property,” says Denzil Simons, the man who was scammed out of his money. “We called the number on the pamphlet and then a man came to see us. He was very convincing and supportive. We told him what we wanted and he gave us a quotation of R6 000.” He says the man even came to fetch him and took him to a bank in Parow to withdraw the money. “The money was deposited to him on 19 March and he promised that the wendy house would be up in three days, but that never happened,” says Simons. “On 25 March he appeared with the contractor who was to do the job, he checked out the yard where the wendy house would be erected the following day, but when that didn’t happen I contacted the contractor. Photo: Reyana Steyn contractor told us that he hadn’t received the money from the man in question and therefore he couldn’t start working.” Simons then contacted the man who said he would pay the contractor, but after days passed the contractor refused to be part of the deal. “He told me that he still had not received any money and that he no longer wanted to be part of this project, because something didn’t feel right.” The Simons family continued to phone ‘he man and wanted to know what was going on but excuses kept being given. “When we phone his number he disguises

his voice or his girlfriend says he will call me back, but he never does. My father-in-law and I went to his house in Westbank to fetch the money, but the man said that he wanted to keep 15 percent of the money that was given. I was furious that he felt he needed to get a percentage back, even though he didn’t do anything.” The man then paid Simons back R2 500 and after that paid another R1 500. “He refuses to give back the remaining R2 000, so I took him to the Small Claims Court. He also threatened to kill me and my family, which I reported to the police.” Simons says he wants people to be aware of people who are just out to betray people. “The wendy house was supposed to be for my children, yet this man lied to us from the beginning. He seemed as if he knew what he was doing, but that was not the case at all.” Candice Simons urges people to rather check if someone is registered to ensure that the job will be done correctly. “We are fighting to get our money back and we wouldn’t want anything like this to happen to anyone else.” The contractor who wishes to remain anonymous tells TygerBurger that he withdrew because he didn’t want to be linked to a scam. “He asked me to assist him and I agreed, but I was supposed to get a deposit to purchase the materials, which he failed to give so I withdrew. I refused to be a part of something like this. I heard a lot of stories of how he took people’s money but before I would be linked to this so called scam I told him I don’t want to be a part of this.” The paper tried to get hold of the man in question, but after numerous phone calls was unsuccessful in doing so at the time of going to print.

. From page 1. “I spent most of the night at the police station because I was so worried about her,” she said. “To find out that it was all a hoax disappoints me because this was somebody that I trusted in projects that I do in the informal settlements, but I realise that there are some political workings afoot to destroy what we are achieving in these communities,” she said. The city has also responded to the current situation at Malawi Camp and Freedom Farm. “While we respect the right of citizens to protest, we condemn the use of violence and the deliberate disruption of traffic and related services”, said councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for human settlements. “The city is working with both the provincial and national government and other entities to help improve the living conditions of residents in the area,” he added. This is a process that started as long ago as 2004, when surveys were conducted in these informal settlements, in order to identify potential beneficiaries for relocation. There were further surveys in 2005, 2006 and November 2009. The surveys conducted recorded who was residing in the two informal settlements at that time , with the intention of moving people residing there to the N2 Gateway project. As a result approximately 848 beneficiaries were identified for housing opportuni-

ties in the N2 Gateway, from Malawi Camp and Freedom Farm. These identified beneficiaries started moving into the N2 Gateway (Delft Symphony) in March 2012 and to date 583 have been moved. The current protests are around the issue that not all residents of these two informal settlements will be moved to the N2 Gateway (Delft Symphony). There are around 440 people who will not be relocated to the aforementioned project as they either moved into the informal settlements, after the November 2009 survey or do not meet the qualification criteria for a housing opportunity. To meet the qualification criteria a person must earn between R0 and R3 500 a month and cannot have received a subsidy before. Only those identified through the surveys can be accommodated into the N2 Gateway (Delft Symphony) project. The Western Cape provincial minister of Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, has requested the city to provide information regarding allocations of those residing in Malawi Camp and Freedom Farm. The minister has indicated that after this information, and information he has requested from other relevant parties is received, he will convene public meetings and explain the reasons why some of the people’s applications were declined and also the criteria to qualify for a BNG house. The date for this meeting has not yet beeen finalised.

Road death toll bit less grim Previous 12 months’ death toll as at May 2009: 1 682. Previous 12 months’ death toll as at May 2012: 1 254. Western Cape minister of transport Robin Carlisle has identified increasing responsibility among drivers as helping to maintain the decline in the number of deaths on the roads. “Based on the counts from the mortuaries, we are just under a 28 percent total decline from when I took office in 2009. We are seeing that more and more people are waking up to their responsibilities such as

buckling up and slowing down. Justice is getting ever swifter against drunk drivers, as the staff of the blood testing lab has quadrupled, and very soon we will be seeing the re-introduction of breathalysers under improved regulations and standards. He added a number of measures are currently under way to speed up the decline. “These include tougher legislation for reckless drivers and a programme to prevent reckless drivers from transacting with the Enatis system while they have outstanding warrants.”

Having fun on Youth Day Police kept on their toes in several busts Youth Day was celebrated in the community on Saturday with a number of events at various locations. While entertaining the yo uth with a variety of activities that included music and drama there were also motivational speakers who reminded the youngsters about the origins of June 16 in 1976 that sparked the eventual downfall of apartheid. Here are a selection of photos that capture the celebrations of the day.

Police have been putting their crime fighting efforts into top gear in recent operations. During last week police of the Bishop Lavis Cluster Crime Prevention Unit were on their toes during stop-and-search operations when they recovered three illegal guns in Valhalla Park. One was discovered in Davids Street, and the others on the corner of Angela and Eva Streets. Three people were arrested and police also managed to recover items that were stolen during an armed robbery that took place in Eleanor Street. The police want to thank the public who supplied information that led to these arrests in the community. Police in Delft have also been very active with search and seizure operations over this weekend. . On Friday at approximately 22:00 police officers were busy in the Delft area when they received information of illegal drug activities at a house at N2 Gateway. During their search they found four 50kg bags filled with dagga and 100 parcels of dagga with an estimated street value of R100 000. A 33-year-old woman was arrested and will be facing a charge of illegal possession of drugs. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, the station commander of Delft police complimented his staff for excellent work done. . Following the major drug bust of about R1 million in Maitland last week, members of the SAPS Western Cape Flying Squad and Dog Unit, once again made a huge impact by foiling an armed robbery in Delft on Friday 15 June. Police arrested three suspects and seized a R4 rifle after receiving information from the public about a planned armed robbery. A detailed description of the suspects’s vehicle was given to the police and it was spotted on the corner of Symphony and Hindle roads at around 17:30. The arrests were made after police found the rifle and ammunition inside a black bag in the boot of the car.

They will face charges relating to possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition. In Bishop Lavis police also played a big part in recovering stolen goods. Constables Gerald Buys and Menessa Lakay joined forces with the Flying Squad when they reacted to information regarding a house robbery that took place in Rondebosch. Following their leads the stolen goods were recovered at a house in Dowling Street, Montana, and the constables tracked down a stolen Mercedes Benz in Swan Road, Bishop Lavis. Apart from the car the other stolen items included an iPad, TV sets and sound systems. A woman has been taken into custody in connection with the crime.

SESDE AANVULLENDE WAARDASIELYS TOT DIE 2009- ALGEMENE WAARDASIELYS (SV06), VIR DIE 2012/2013-BOEKJAAR

A new organisation is creating awareness about the importance of early childhood development.

The Ravensmead Uitsig Cravenby Development Initiative (RUCDI) has been launched and identified Early Childhood Development (ECD) as its key objective for 2012. This organisation aims to start an early enrolment conversation to sensitise parents about the importance and benefits of Early Childhood Development (ECD). The need for advocacy of Early Childhood Development and enrolment into Grade 1 and specifically Grade R was identified due to the feedback received from schools in the community on the poor performance levels of learners at this level. Many of these learners have not had the privilege of any formal pre-school educational experience prior to being enrolled in school. Hence learners are not school-ready and not able to meet their learning outcomes for the grade. Research has shown that learners who are enrolled in Grade R (at a school or independent ECD centre) at the appropriate age of six perform better with regard to meeting their learning outcomes than learners who are enrolled for the first time in Grade 1. The information available also shows that the majority of learners in the communities that form part of RUCDI are not enrolled for formal schooling. This indicates that many parents are not aware of the negative impact this has on the future development of their children. The organisation therefore deems the need to turn this situation around as a matter of great urgency. Tomorrow the organisation is planning to launch a campaign at the Ravensmead Secondary School Hall starting at 19:15. The target audience are the parents of children up to six years of age and the event will feature audiovisual presentations by specialists in the field of ECD. For further information about this initiative contact Verna Stuurman on 021 900 7163, 082 462 6541 or email vernastuurman@gmail.com.

Skaterlag iemand so vroeg in die oggend, of is daar ’n groot probleem? Nee, man!” sê ’n vrou, haar gesig vertrek in afgryse.

Winter wine fest the best place to be The eighth Winter Wine Festival at High Street Shopping Village takes place from tomorrow to Saturday, 23 June. TygerBurger is the media sponsor of the event. Over and above the selection of wines from all over South Africa and even South America and Europe to taste and buy, visitors will be seduced into tasting the hand-made food items and fresh produce in the market, have a rest and something warm to eat in one of two food courts, listen to live music and have free access to the wine theatre presented by The Cape Wine Academy. The programme of three tutored tastings per day include the Bovlei Mad Hatter’s range which will be paired with mini-hamburgers, a chocolate and wine pairing with Durbanville Hills, a fortified wine, port and brandy tasting, a pinot noir/pinotage taste-off and presentations by the Chilean team of Concha y Toro. Ticket prices are R80 pp when bought on-line and R90 pp at the door. Pensioners’ and group tickets (10+) cost R70 pp, when bought online. Tickets are available via the High Street Shopping Village Facebook page, or from www.ticketbreak.co.za or at the door during the festival. WIN! WIN! WIN! . TygerBurger has 15 double tickets for the festival on Saturday to give away. Simply email your name and contact details to tyger@dieburger.com before tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 12:00, with “wine festival” in the subject line. Winners will be notified by phone.

Register car in 21 days Traffic Services are appealing to motorists to register their vehicles within the 21-day period and notify the authorities about a change of address in relation to their drivers’ licences to avoid prosecution. “We urge motorists to ensure that when they receive a notice to appear in court, they either pay their fine or appear in court on the stipulated date. Motorists who fail to appear in court on the dates specified, run the risk of being found in contempt of court and a warrant of arrest will be issued,” said Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson: Traffic Services, City of Cape Town. During vehicle check points and door-todoor visits last week, the Cape Town Traffic Services Operation Reclaim Unit executed about 700 warrants and arrested 62 motorists who had failed to pay their traffic fines.

Project is Good News

Get your Identity Document now

GARY VAN DYK

Art was in action at the Adriaanse Library Hall recently. Budding artists in the community got the chance to exhibit their works after they took part in the Good News Outreach Project, that taught youngsters how to get their artistic creative juices flowing. Grant Julius, from Elsies River, was one of the facilitators and explained that the project was run under the auspices of Greatmore Studios in Woodstock. He was assisted by Anna Cristina Lorenzen from Norway who is part of the Visiting Artists Programme, where the studio invites artists from across the globe to participate. “With this outreach we go into the community to work with members of the area, and we wanted to be in Elsies River because of the lack of art projects and institutions established in the area. “With great help from Mercia Wagenstroom, a community worker with Green Grow in the area we had the privilege of using the Adriaanse Library Hall to conduct the project that included working with two specific groups – primary school learners and the elderly. “We have decided to use newspaper as a canvas on which the participants are able to paint and draw their own news, preferably good news,” he said. The idea came about when thinking about how newspapers really have very little good news and affect the community very negatively most of the time. “We hosted two workshops with each group since the beginning of June and concluded with an art exhibition,” he continued. “The results have been inspiring, to see the wishes, desires and aspirations of these two age groups reflect in their work. “They are not always aware of the concept of good news in the environment they live in and the project allowed them to meditate on the possibility of an alternative situation. “Those who witnessed the way these individuals came to life creatively have likewise seen the power of simply keeping minds both young and old occupied with positive ideas of change and manifesting it on canvas.” “We, the co-ordinators of this project have also been touched and seen the possibility and positive effect of motivating to see dreams manifest in painting to the point that we want to do more projects like this in other communities.”

Add some skills to your art talents Emerging and mid-career visual artists (umzobi), are requested to contact Good Hope Art if they are interested in studio spaces and a mentoring training programme. An emerging artist is someone who is talented, but realises that they need to develop it further to add skill to their talent. This can be someone who has completed academic training or someone who has been working on this in secret. The proposed studio spaces will be located in several communities around Cape Town and will be part of a greater art precinct and network that is in the process of being established. Interested people can contact Dean on 084 780 3386 or 021 465 1718 or ghopeas@gmail.com for the relevant application form before Friday 29 June.

Musically, the cream of the crop The national auditions for the second Samro Hubert van der Spuy Music Competition were concluded at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre earlier this month. About 37 young, promising instrumentalists from Cape Town and adjacent areas competed to be in the starting line-up on Tuesday 25 September at the same venue. During the preceding week the selectors evaluated the entrants in other centres of South Africa, such as Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Pretoria and Durban. While the total of 78 entries was below that of last year, Leon Hartshorne, president of the SA Society of Music Teachers: Tygerberg, hosting the competition, is very happy about the general standard of the entrants. “We have experienced wonderful talent, a product of the high standard of music tuition we are blessed with in South Africa,” he says. The candidates will eventually be selected to compete over four rounds before independent judges at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow from Tuesday 25 to Friday 28 September 2012.

Chris Willemse-Fietse is ’n familiebesigheid.

Chris Willemse-Fietse is geleë in winkel 12C, Willowbridge Noord, Carl Cronjérylaan, Tygervallei. Foto’s van wenners verskyn in TygerBurger.

Netball championships feel economic pinch The worldwide economic crisis has had its effect on the inaugural World University Netball Championships (WUNC) to be held at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town from 2 to 7 July. Initially, 18 countries indicated that they would send teams to the tournament, which is being held under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the biggest multi-code sports organisation after the International Olympic Committee. However, because of financial constraints, only seven countries have confirmed their participation. Those who have dropped out include the two netball powerhouses, Australia and New Zealand. The seven teams taking part are hosts South Africa, Great Britain, Ireland, Jamaica, Namibia, the United States and Uganda. Tournament Director Helene

The victorious Tygerberg Rock and Surf Angling Club members are (back from left) Jaco Fourie, Thys Kemp (junior), Craig van der Poll, Greg Dubber and Thys Kemp (senior), (middle) Dion Van Zyl and Bren van Reenen, (front) Eben Swanepoel, Wikus van der Merwe and Gustav Carstensen.

James is in graad 7 by Laerskool Eversdal en Ros souw in graad 7 by Laerskool Stellen bosch.

Club gets angle right For the first time in 14 years the Tygerberg Rock and Surf Angling Club won the Western Province Champion Club Trophy. Tygerberg battled it out with the clubs of False Bay and Two Oceans. Throughout the year the competition was very fierce and the top three teams were constantly alternating between first and second. At the start of the last competition there were only 30 points dif-

ference between first and second, and only 28 points between second and third, with Tygerberg leading the pack, Two Oceans second and False Bay third. Conditions for the last competition were not what the anglers wanted, with some big swell, and moderate winds. The beach area from Steenbras River mouth to Muizenberg corner was selected to be fished and the anglers were pumped up to give their all for the last eight hours of the angling season. Early morning Charl Marais

Botha said the tournament would now be played on a round robin basis, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. “It is disappointing, but it is not a train smash,” said an optimistic Botha. “It means that each team will play a minimum of six matches, with one bye, so they will all be getting a lot of time on court.” South Africa, Great Britain, Ireland and Jamaica are the teams expected to go through to the semi-finals. Botha said all the teams would conduct coaching clinics in and around Cape Town as part of FISU’s outreach programme. “We are hoping that the people of Cape Town will turn out in their droves to watch the netball and support the South African Universities team, which includes four members of the Spar national team.”

from Two Oceans hooked and landed a black stingray of 176kg. Things seemed to be going his club’s way but Tygerberg refused to give up and kept the score board ticking with edibles and smaller sharks and rays. Late afternoon Michele Santavito landed a bronze whaler shark of 36kg and Bren van Reenen a bronze whaler of 66kg, which pushed Tygerberg back into the lead. Tygerberg celebrated their win in grand fashion at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Blind bowlers hosted The Kraaifontein Bowling Club recently hosted the Peninsula Blind Bowlers for the second year running. Five games of trips were played against blind and partially-sighted bowlers from Peninsula. While each game was fiercely

Clean sweep:

The All Stars action cricket team won all their games in the A1 league. They beat Tigers Extreme 7257 in a tense final. The Tigers have dominated the arena over the past few years and are the only other side to have gone through a season in the A1 league without losing a match. The All Stars team is (from left) Francois Vreulink, Deon van Blerk, Brenton Jordaan (vicecaptain), David Henderson, Marco Buratti (captain) and Eddie de Jongh. Front: Eugene Jones and Wouter Breytenbach.

contested and some great bowls were delivered, the overall result was not important. Both clubs regard this event as a morale-building exercise and an opportunity for the visually-impaired bowlers to test their skills against sighted bowlers.

It’s a 20man battle royal South Africa’s prime wrestling event returns to the Parow Civic Centre on 25 June as the Africa Wrestling Federation (AWF/AWA) takes to the stage at 19:30. Twenty of Cape Town’s best athletes will be competing for the Golden Ticket in a 20-man Battle Royal. The winning ticket gives its holder the chance to challenge anybody, anywhere, at any time – no belts are off limits! Twenty enter the ring at the same time, but only one man will be standing at the end – who will it be? Ed-Electric, the current Towbars

Cape Lightweight Champion, has been roped into a Triple Threat match. This means he’ll share the squared circle with Max “The Body”, and the Little Hillbilly – two very different personalities, each man with very different fighting styles. There’s no love lost between these three as tensions rise to breaking point. Only one man leaves the ring with the title belt. The ever-exuberant, always abrasive Johnny Palazzio will be facing the people’s champ, Shaun Koen in a heavyweight duel that will be sure to shake the foundations. Koen is no

stranger to Palazzio’s street style, and will be looking for a resounding victory over this “backstabber”. As for Palazzio, he’ll want to keep his title, which is now suddenly on the line since being challenged by Koen and his Golden Ticket. Palazzio’s not going to go down without a very dirty fight. Two new athletes will be making their debut at this House of Pain, Zaheer Bayat and Von Steele, having graduated from the School of Hard Knocks. Tickets cost R80 reserved and R40 unreserved. Book on 082 456 0792.

Martin van der Berg, a totally blind bowler, being directed by Quintin Capes.

Winter cricket clinics blow off cobwebs The Ryan Maron’s Cricket School of Excellence will host various winter clinics this upcoming holiday. Parklands College will host a clinic from 25 to 28 June. UCT Indoor Sports Centre from 9 to 12 July and Jan van Riebeeck Primary School will host two clinics from 2 to 5 July and 9 to 12 July.

The course caters for student between the ages of 4 to 16 years. Students should wear white shorts and shoes. They should also bring their own equipment. The cost is R500 per student or R950 for two siblings. Go to www.cricketschool.co.za for more information.

Team will have to double effort THOMAS CAROLUS

John Daniels, coach of Matroosfontein FC, has called on his team to double their efforts ahead of their crucial Northern Suburbs Football Association Super league encounter against Blue Downs Spurs at Salberau Park on Saturday. Daniels is still confident that his side can come back from their low and says that they have to remain positive, despite drawing once and winning only three games leaving the Matroosfontein side with only 10 points after 10 matches in the first round. “Things have been a whole lot tougher for us and clubs are making it harder for us to penetrate them,” he said. “Most teams are always hoping to catch us on a counter-attack, while some are content with only walking away with a point against us and that makes things difficult for us because we are always facing defensive sides.’’ Against Central, Matroosfontein did most of the attacking just like against Riverside Rangers, where they lost and Daniels believes that scoring in open play has become difficult for his team. “We are playing good attacking football but there are no goals to show for it, simply because teams have become increasingly defensive against us, which means we have to capitalise on set pieces.” Riverside Rangers also travel to Salberau Park to face Central in their league match on

Saturday. Barry Lee Harold, who returns to the starting line-up, insists that despite the team sitting at the top of the table, they will have to give it all in order to stay at the top. The midfielder, who has been an inspiration behind the team’s success, says he is looking forward to an interesting match this coming weekend. “It is always interesting to play against Central,” he said. “Either way you look at it, it’s going to be a tough match. To be honest, I don’t care how we play just as long as we collect three points after the game. “We need all the points we can get, the first round is almost over, therefore we need to double our efforts in the remaining games because no team is going to donate points to us.” William Jacobs echoed Harold’s sentiments saying that the match against Central will be like a Cup final. “We need this game. Leading by nine points can be complicated, so we have to get the three points and try to widen the gap between us and the other teams. “There are just a few matches to play in the first round, so this away game is very important for us. Nothing but a win will make us happy.” Jacobs added that a combination of beautiful football and goals will add the cherry on top to this match, which will see the two giants of Elsies River collide.

Peter Gaiser from Durbanville, who won the Mr and Ms Fitness South Africa Beach Body Model title in May, represented South Africa in the Model Universe Wee kend held in Miami last weekend. Gaiser placed a creditable 14th out of 59 contes tants..
