A ‘footprint’ of change

leadership partnership with schools in the community is growing to leave an indelible footprint of values in the minds of learners at five schools in the community. Valentine’s Day was the perfect day to launch a unique programme that aims to instil positive values at St Augustine Primary in Ravensmead, Uitsig Primary, CL Wilmot Primary in Uitsig, Holy Trinity Primary in Elsies River and Ravensmead High School. Erica Jacobs, one of the driving forces behind this initiave explained that in 2012 the principals of these schools were part of a leadership circle on the Partners for Possibility Project. “After a year of Leadership Development training these five principals and their business partners, decided to address values as a key community concern,” she explained. “Across all spheres, a good value system will stand you in good stead. It is no more so evident as it is in children’s behaviour and their interpersonal contact, that we as a society are failing in term of values.

Responsibility “Every day we open the newspapers, we read about greed, corruption, violence, intolerance, etc. In order to restore the social fabric of community, all adults have a responsibility to make conscious efforts to teach our children basic values in the home, at school and in the community.” Through various workshops this leadership circle agreed to depict six core values in the form of a footprint. Principal Garren February (St Augustine Primary), supported by his business partner Colin Levitan (of Tygerberg Animal Hospital) and Erica Jacobs (who managed the Leadership Circle), through the Metro North Education District (MNED) office, engaged the WCED HIV/AIDS and Life Skills Pro-

gramme for financial resources to implement the Values Footprint Project. These values are: caring, fairness, responsibility, respect, trustworthiness and citizenship, each depicted by a specific colour. Jacobs pointed out that the project aims to roll out in two phases. “In phase 1, this first term, the educators of the schools received the values training. Parents were invited to parent meetings so that they can reinforce the values at home. “Learner leadership structures were trained so that they can support the implementation of the values on the playground and in their leadership; educators, parents and learners pledged their commitment to implementation of the six values. “This is what we launched on Friday,” she

said. Phase two will be implemented during the second term and the intention is to enrol 12 more schools in a 4km radius, in an attempt to reach all the schools and all the families in the Ravensmead Uitsig Cravenby area. “All schools will phase in the six values during this year and from 2015 onwards,” added Jacobs.

Positive message “A total of 18 schools will be implementing the same values at the same time, thus flooding the community with positive messages. “The Values Footprint logo, which depicts them in six colours, was specifically designed because schools saw this as an opportunity to leave a values legacy, for schools to

make a definite imprint on the social fabric of the Ravensmead/Uitsig/Cravenby community and surrounding areas.” Schools would like to call on the support of the church leaders, community organisations and businesses in the area to subscribe to the same values and to support schools. “If we all live, work, preach and teach the same values, we can change the narrative of our community. Business can support positive messaging and awareness raising in community, through sponsorship of Values Footprint flags, specific colour fabrics, arm bands or T-shirts,” concluded Jacobs. V For more information and enquiries on how to get involved, contact Garren February via email at gar or 021 934 6004 or Erica Jacobs at or 082 7410254.

werkholis, “en naweke speel my band, Paper Plain City. Jy doen dit omdat jy dit wíl doen.” V Die Absa Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees vind vanjaar van 29 Maart tot 5 April plaas.

Achmat Jackson is ready to "climb that moun tain" in aid of charity.

Achmat to take on mountain GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

With a new production of The Sound of Music starting in the city, Achmat Jackson of Bonteheuwel is taking the idea of “climbing every mountain” to greater heights – all for charity! Once again he has entered the tough charity event called the K-Way Platteklip Charity Challenge. “I am going to climb Table Mountain via Platteklip Gorge five times on the same day,” he says excitedly. “Once at the top of Platteklip Gorge I will run across the table and catch a cable car ride down, refuel and start again. Each lap is 5,5km and will take me approximately 1,5hrs to complete, but I’m ready to do it for a good cause.” The event is happening on Saturday 5 April, but Achmat wants you to start getting your sponsorships in as soon as possible. “The charity that I am supporting is Sinenjongo High School in Milnerton, that is desperate for funds to upgrade their education facilities. “Ten percent of what I raise is for the Wilderness Search and Rescue who provide volunteer rescue services for people that find themselves in trouble on the mountains of the Western Cape. “You can sponsor me per lap and your support would be greatly appreciated.” V To support Achmat on his quest follow this link and scroll down until you find his name. http:// Fotogalery

More violence in Delft has led to the death of another resident in the area, but quick action by police has led to the arrest of a suspect. On Friday, 14 February at about at 20:45 an argument between two people led to a stabbing that left 25-yearold Brian Adams from Aster Crescent in Roosendal in a critical condition and he subsequently died as a result of a knife wound to the chest. The 26-year-old suspect fled the scene but with the help of Roosendal Neighbourhood Watch members the police managed to apprehend the suspect hiding underneath a car at his residence. He faced charges of murder at the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday. Brigadier Hendrik Jansen, the Station Commander at Delft SAPS praised the Neighbourhood Watch members for their assistance at the crime scene and their help with the tracing and detention of the suspect. Jansen also reported that they had a massive operation in the Blikkiesdorp and Leiden areas where in the former area a group of reservists and Neighbourhood Watch members retrieved a 9mm firearm with one magazine and 12 rounds, after they responded to a complaint from the communty. The firearm had its serial number filed off. Two suspects aged 27 and 28 will face charges for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition as well as for tampering with a firearm and will also appeared in Bellville Court on Monday.

Initially another man was attacked by angry community members shortly after the incident, but police have confirmed that he is not linked to the crime and is recovering in hospital from injuries that he sustained at the hands of the crowd. Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said: “It was established on Friday morning that the suspect allegedly committed suicide while in custody. An inquest case was opened for investigation.” A bloodstained mattress where the girl was murdered is a gruesome reminder for residents that their children are not safe. Meanwhile, Delft residents took to the streets earlier on Friday following several incidents of child killings in the area. Siphokuhle will be laid to rest in the Eastern Cape next weekend.

There has been a dramatic turn of events relating to the latest incident of a child being raped and murdered in Delft last week – the suspect has committed suicide. Police have confirmed that a 27-year-old suspect was arrested last Thursday and was placed in custody at Bellville South Police cells when there was no place in Delft. It was establish that on Friday morning that the suspect allegedly committed suicide using his t-shirt, while in custody and an inquest docket has been registered. These developments are in relation to the incident where Siphokuhle Flephu’s body was found in a shack in Delft South last weekend.

This annual event hosted by the Western Cape Government’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport acknowledged individuals and organisations in the fields of language, arts and culture, heritage, museums, geographical names, libraries and their archives. Valhalla Park Library won the award for the Best Medium-Size Public Library and this award is given to a public library that demonstrates excellence in marketing, promotion and outreach activities and whose efforts have made a difference to a community. Other nominees in this category included the Masiphumelele Library and the Observatory Library. Cape Town Central Library won the award for the Best Big Public Library, bea-

Facilities This award was judged on the criteria of the most innovative and imaginative programmes, projects and events being presented at a public library. The library was also shortlisted for the award for Best Public Library: Youth Services. The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects, Belinda Walker, commended the award recipients. “We know that if our library facilities are to be truly beneficial to communities, they must be more than just places from which books are borrowed,” she said. “They must be centres that are committed to excellence, shared spaces where communities come together to exchange ideas, and they must provide a secure environment in which visitors are made to feel that the facilities belong to them. “We are very proud of the City’s libraries and the librarians who have been recognised.”

New campaign in Delft inspires youth GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Giving youth a chance to be positive in their community, that is what an organisation in Delft is busy doing every Friday night. Help to Care South Africa is an organisation that focusses on the wellbeing of communities to help people find the wealth that they have within themselves, and one of their projects aims to keep youth busy on a Friday night. Latasha Storm is a member of the organisation who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of these youngsters, and their parents. “There’s just too many negative influences around them and we want to show them how they can have fun by being positive,” she said. “We don’t want them to end up in shebeens or drug dens so we’ve started this “Back to School is Cool” campaign to motivate a positive lifestyle. Through this campaign we want to motivate them to see that the only way people will take you seriously is if you start with yourself. “Getting an education will open the doors

towards your future not drugs or belonging to a gang,” she said. She pointed out that when they started the campaign more than 50 youngsters rocked up, some with their parents, and they had a great evening of activities. Last week the theme for their evening was a Valentine’s Day celebration and the hall of the Welwitchia Primary school in Delft South where they met was decorated for the occasion. “Everyone knows that Valentine’s is all about romance, but tonight we are giving them the low-down on the responsibilities that go with the romance, the respect that they must have for their partners, and most importantly for themselves, but we all also have some fun activities to keep them occupied,” said Latasha. “We saw this when we recently hosted an open-air film screening and families came out to watch it, enjoy the activities, and neighbours could relate to each other. I see the idea growing, and as it does we will achieve our goals of communities in harmony.” V For more information about their activities call La tasha on 084 557 0928.

‘Swear jar’ helps Tygerberg Hospice DESIREÉ RORKE @dezzierorke

Swearing does not come cheap at the Pizza Pub in Kraaifontein. It is common knowledge that bad language will land you in hot water - and out of pocket - the moment you set foot in this popular establishment. Not that this has stopped some patrons from having the occasional four-letter word slip out. Bizarre as it may seem, it has served as an incentive for locals to “indulge”, as long as the notes keep piling into the infamous “swear jar” behind the counter. All for a good cause as they knowingly collect funds throughout the year, for the Tygerberg Hospice in Bellville. “My husband will greet an old patron with a hearty back-slap and an unsavoury slip of the tongue, as he tosses his redemptive R50 or R100 bill into the jar. This is ussually followed with a jovial return-greeting another apologetic “#*$#” and off course, another R100 for penance,” explained Lorraine Correia, wife of owner Nicky, as she laughingly tells of this tradition. Trivial as it is, the money collected in the jar has seen

Lorraine shows off the swear jar. thousands of terminal ill patients through the last stages of their life to die with dignity. This is the 15th year that Nicky and Lorraine are donating a substantial amount in aid of the hospice. A cheque for R25 000 was handed over at the Pizza Pub on Friday night, as Nicky celebrated his birthday. “All the funds donated are raised by the ‘swear jar’ and the annual potjiekos competition,” says Lorraine who along with Nicky thanked all their friends and patrons for their contributions. Barry Evans, trustee of the hospice said that these funds will greatly assist the Tygerberg Hospice to go the extra mile in the care and relief of people suffering with life threatening illness.

Music can make positive changes GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

While local authorities try to figure out how to curb the growing trend of violence and crime on the Cape Flats, a Norwegian musician is showing how music can make a difference. Arne Hiorth, a Norwegian university lecturer, is no stranger to our shores and built up strong partnerships where he brings his students to visit here, and then there have been groups of musicians who have gone to Norway from there. Last week he was back in the city with his music students and for two days they were busy giving concerts at schools in Tafelsig, Delft, Rocklands, and Lost City. The tour programme was organised by Ricardo de Reuck and his staff at Cape Flats YMCA. “The idea is to show the youth out here how performing arts can be a way out of the darkness they are experiencing in their daily lives,” he says excitedly. “Through our contact with the YMCA, we learn about the problems in these communities, the crime, drug abuse, violence, aids and unemployment that are the ingredients of a melting pot that can only lead to destruction of these young lives. “Without any positive activities for them after school, that is when the problems begin, and the criminals then start using them, start getting them into drugs and other negative pursuits. “We want to show them that there is a way out of it through the performing arts,” he says.

Integrity Arne points out that one of the youth leaders working with them has realised that “power” after growing up as one of the really bad boys. “Before he got involved in our projects Mario was all about making trouble as he was all about his own desires and the will of his gang, but his life turned when he became a committed Christian now intent on bringing integrity back to the community he terrorised.” Mario also introduced the Norwegians to the talented Lyle Syster, 14, a guitarist from Mitchell’s Plain who joined them for a solo at one of the concerts. “This kid just blew us away,” said Arne. “I’ve always known that this city has some of the most talented musicians in the world, and over the years we have invited quite a number of them to Norway for festivals and workshops. “They’ve always impressed the audiences over there, some of them returned to study there, and they’re making their mark on the international scene. This is another young man that is going to make his mark.” Jazz jam An integral part of every visit by the Norwegians is a visit to the famous Monday Night Jazz Jam, which was specially hosted at Carnival Court in Cape Town after stopping at its old venue at Swingers in Wetton a few months ago. Lyle joined in the jam on this visit and impressed the punters. Arne also revealed that with Mike Cuthbert, programme secretary of YMCA in South Africa they are working on a project that involves “rehearsal spots”. “This is one of the main aims of our visits every year to give our students the opportunity to experience how lives can be transformed through music and the arts, and most importantly the part that they can play in it all.” “We’re also showing that through the harmony in music, we can bring harmony into young lives across the world,” concluded Arne. More voices needed for youth choir GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Young voices in harmony is what the ERUB Children’s Choir is all about and they’re looking for more children and youth to join them. This choir, which was once the pride and joy of the South African music scene was established in 1986 by the late Frank Pietersen, is only a shadow of its former self. On Saturday the seven voices who are now part of the choir seemed small as they gathered at the Centre for the Performing Arts at UWC, but then they sang and they removed all doubt that strength is not in numbers, in this case it is sheer talent! Spearheading the resurgence of the choir is Keith Jenneke and Peter Roux, who explained that originally the choir comprised of children from Elsies River, Ravensmead, Uitsig and Bishop Lavis, hence the name ERUB, but soon singers from all over the Cape Flats started joining. “From its inception until the end of 2004, the choir

was directed by Rosamunde van Zitters. “The choir released its first two CD’s in July 2000, and a Christmas CD in December 2002.” Part of the problems that they encountered is the lack of sponsorship for the project. “When we started we were supported by the old “Coloured” affairs department,” adds Jenneke. “This meant we could provide transport for the singers to fetch them for practices and performances, but when it dried up it became difficult for some families. “We have realised that there is just too much talent going to waste in our communities so we are calling on parents who know their children can sing to join us in making musical harmony. “We are looking for young exciting singers, aged between 9 and 16 who love music, enjoy singing, and want to make music together to join us.” Practices are on Saturdays from 10:00 to 13:00 at the Centre for the Performing arts at the University of the Western Cape. V For more information call Keith Jenneker on 082 950 8476 or Peter Roux on 083 535 3707. Video at

Ladies in step against abuse

GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

The WOWMovement in Bellville South had ladies in the community making their dance moves for the beat against abuse on Saturday. Local community worker from the organisation Joy Warries was one of the driving forces behind the event and said that violence against women and children is increasing at an alarming rate in South Africa. “Every week we are informed of horrendous violent acts against women of all ages and children as young as 6-monthsold babies,” she said. “As communities we see children reenact the voilence around them disguised as games that they play and we need to stop it. We need a radical revolution against gender violence.”

Skills Even though the organisation has been addressing economic injustice for many years through their skills projects this year they wanted to join the international outcry against gender based violence. “We found out about the One Billion Rising movement, an international day of radical awareness and advocacy campaign, culminating on the 14 February across the world,” she continues. “According to United Nations

statistics worldwide, one in three women will be raped and abused in their lifetime. “With 3Billion people in the world that means 1 billion women will become a statistic that is why we had to show our support with our event on Saturday.” This was not the only event of its kind in the Western Cape, one was also held in the Company Garden on Friday 14 February. Everybody enjoyed the event on Saturday,” continues Warries. “Members of our movement were joined by Proudly Female Teen groups from Bellville South and Winsley primary schools, as well as the ladies from the Proteaville Senior Fitness Club.

Awareness “We all came together to beat the heat, and let the rhythm get to us as we declared our voice against gender abuse.”Warries concluded by saying that she hoped that the event created an awareness for women and children that are being abused. “They must know that there is help out there for them, our doors at our centre, The Bellville South Youth and Women Centre (next to the civic centre in Kasselsvlei Road) is always open to them.” V Further information from Joy War ries on 073 556 1025.

SARS to helps small businesses with grants Financial help for small businesses who want to take on new and inexperienced staff is now available and the benefits will be there from next payday, said Michael Bagraim, a Cape Town labour lawyer. He was speaking at a breakfast symposium organised by the Cape Coast branch of the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bloubergstrand last week. “The beauty of the youth wage subsidy or Employment Tax Incentive is that there is very little red tape involved and no waiting for refunds,” he said. “The SA Revenue Service has done an excellent job in putting together a scheme that is really easy to use and one that will help many young people find their places in the working world.” He explained that a business taking on a young and inexperienced worker at a salary of, say, R2 000 a month would be able to deduct half the salary (R1 000) from its next PAYE payment to SARS. “This is instant help for small businesses,” said Janine Myburgh, president of the chamber. “We predict that it will mean many more jobs and it will help small businesses to grow. One of the big problems the country faces is that young people cannot get jobs because they have no experience and are now unable to find work. This is a ‘catch 22’ situation and at last we have a way to break the impasse,” she said. Bagraim explained that the scheme applied to young South Africans aged between 18 and 29 who were starting their first jobs, but all jobs in the public service were excluded. Also excluded were domestic workers and workers “connected” with their employers. The age limit did not apply to approved industries in Special Economic Zones such as Saldanha. New workers who started their jobs after October 1 last year would also be subsidised but only from January this year. These grants amounted to R121 500 per apprentice per year. For more details call the SARS contact centre on 0800 007 277 or the SETA for the manufacturing, engineering and related services.

Casual sex risk for HIV infection With love still in the air, the Western Cape Government Health encourages all citizens to use condoms when engaging in sexual activity. “Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) are the epitome of the second hand gift, since the infection has traveled from one person to another, much like that unwanted gift that keeps getting passed from one friend to another. A person who gives you an STI is not a worthy Valentine,” says departmental spokesperson Jo-Anne Otto. Otto says that the best way by far to avoid

contracting an STI is refraining from casual sexual behaviour. “For those who are not in a permanent relationship, keep condoms at hand, and make a habit of using them during sex. Make sure that your partner knows how to use it. Insist on using one every time you have sex,” she adds. Furthermore, if you are in a new relationship, know you and your partner’s HIV status. “It is best to keep using condoms until both you and your partner have been tested for HIV over a period of time and know your status,” she says.

Drink ’n Chill Pill. – Leon V Hoekom dink sommige polisielede hulle is “above the law”? Dit was by die brug by Kraaifontein poskantoor. Was dit ’n an der kar, het daardie einste cop gou die an der kar afgetrek met loeiende sirene! Dis gusting! My gunstelinglekkers, toasted marshmal lows, is my bederfie. Toe ek wou stap om te betaal, neem ’n pragtige jong man dit uit my hand en met so ’n mooi glimlag sê hy: “I would like to buy them for you.” Liefde. – Oumatjie V On Thursday night 13 Feb. someone bro ke into a bakkie and stole a grade 8 school bag in Parow near Lesleys Florist. If by chance you happen to find any school books in any street near the florist will you please bring it to Lesleys Florist, so that they can return it to the child. Trimm, me. Brown, mnr.

BAIE TELEURGESTELD Ravensmead

langs mekaar ry. Mens, as jy raakgery of vermink of erg beseer word, is dit te laat. Of erger, as jy sterf! JOHAN KRUGER Bellville

Welgedaan vir die man! BIBI KEARNEY Epos

Criteria for schools wanting to register with WCED MICHELLE LINNERT @linnertmb

The Western Cape Education Department is very clear about the requirements for centres offering Early Childhood Development (ECD) training. “If a crèche offers Grade R they are regarded as ECD Independent centres and must apply to register with WCED,” Bronagh Casey, spokeswoman for the Western Cape Education Department, told TygerBurger. She said the following guidelines are used as criteria when applications (from commu-

nity based institutions) are evaluated for registration: VThe school must meet the minimum standards for registration; V Be registered with the provincial Department of Social Development; V Have appropriate premises and equipment – buildings should meet the prescribed requirements set out in the guidelines for Early Childhood Development Service (2006); V Have qualified teachers / practitioners – the principal is a professionally qualified educator or have at least ECD NQF Level 5

ECD Centre opens in Leonsdale

with five years management experience and the Grade R practitioners should at least have an ECD NQF Level 5; V The National Curriculum Statement (CAPS) for Foundation Phase should be used for the Grade R learners; V Have appropriate administrative systems and procedures; V Have learner support systems in place. V No pre-primary school should be established within a radius of 5km of another registered independent pre-primary school. V This condition may be waived, based on the availability of accommodation and the

need for provision. The following documents should accompany the application form for registration: A constitution; an admission policy; acurriculum; the lease contract/proof of ownership of buildings (site and floor plan showing learning/ablution and recreational facilities); the qualifications of educators or practitioners; a health certificate issued by the provincial Department of Health; proof of registration with the Department of Social Development (DSD); the language of teaching or first language; financial statements and their governance structure.

PJ comes back from dark side LOUISA STEYL @lounotes

Early learning in Leonsdale is leaping ahead with the opening of the new Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre last week. The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Social Development and Early Childhood Development, Suzette Little, centre, is seen here with principal Elizabeth Benjamin and subcouncil 4 chairperson Clive Justus to cut the ribbon to mark the official opening. Built at a cost of an estimated R4,5 million, the centre is the first of six ECD “Centres of Excellence” that the city is building, based on a report by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research on the areas of greatest need in Cape Town. The facility will be used by the Avonwood Educare centre and can accommodate 80 children. PHOTOS: GARY VAN DYK

Principal Elizabeth Benjamin, front, and her staff keep a close watch on some of their charges enjoying the swings at the new ECD Centre.

outh African icon, PJ Powers, is showing fans another side in her new production, Firefly, currently on at the Roxy Review Bar. “In order to see your firefly, there has to be darkness,” PJ says, explaining the name of the production. “I’m a recovering alcoholic,” she goes on, explaining that the alcoholism took her to rock bottom. “It was in that blackness that I saw my firefly.” Her addiction is one of the very personal parts of her journey that PJ explores in her intimate new show. “Cape Town is an area that I haven’t exposed myself to for a couple of years and the Roxy Theatre is a fabulous theatre,” PJ says of her decision to stage the show in Cape Town. “Also I am very nervous of smaller audiences,” she says, adding: “A sea of 10 000 people is much more comfortable for me. “

Expose “I just decided if I was going to expose myself in this way that I am, because people find things out about me, that they don’t know, that they haven’t ever read before, that I wanted to do it in a more comfortable environment than Johannesburg,” PJ explains, adding that Johannesburg tends to be a harsh place sometimes. While busy with the production, PJ is also in the process of writing a book with Marianne Tham as a ghost-writer, which is another reason why she is in Cape Town. She had been flying to and fro between Johannesburg and Cape Town so far, but PJ says: “The truth is the writing has to be done by the end of March.” On her days off, PJ is spending time with Marianne working on the book, which is the story of her life. “But it’s not just the story of my life,” PJ says, adding: “It’s a story about South Africa, it’s about this young white apolitical, middle-class human being who suddenly was embraced by the whole of Africa.” “There are many parallels about South Africa and the country that we live in and my life,” she goes on. PJ also discovered a comedian in herself along the way. “I wanted to be able to tell some of the stories that I have,” she says, adding that there are some things that have happened in her life that are “extremely funny”. Addiction In her fifth year of sobriety, PJ says she

has watched how the “disease of addiction has pulled many families apart and is busy pulling our country to pieces”. This is what made her want to tell her story. Her relationship with the late Nelson Mandela, which she has never spoken about before, is one of the highs that PJ looks at in Firely. “I was very lucky to have a close relationship with him and he was a constant guide,” she says, adding that he even wrote to her from prison. The lows she talks about is where her career “hit the skids”. “I lost my house, lost my car, lost every material possession I had and had to start again,” she says. “Most of it is done with quite self deprecating humour,” PJ says of her show, adding: “I don’t mind laughing at myself.” Last year, PJ released a new album, called Destiny. “I do believe that we create our own destinies,” she says of the name, adding: “I think that our thoughts become our destinies.” “Those songs came from pain and hurt and happiness,” PJ says of her new album adding that from a lyrical point of view each song is “like a little book”. “Lyrics are very important to me,” she says, adding: “Each song has a whole story.” Firefly includes PJ’s well-loved hits along with some of the songs off her new album. The show runs at GrandWest’s Roxy Review Bar Wednesdays to Sundays until 29 March. V Tickets for the show cost R90 and are available at Computicket.
