A park rises from the dust The community of Golden Gate in Netreg are celebrating the opening of the beautiful Oudehout Park with trees planted, a newly laid lawn and newly created pathways. In addition, the netball court has been re-surfaced and new benches, play equipment and soccer posts erected, and an irrigation system installed. It is very hard to believe that this space was once used as a dumping site, scrapyard and sandpit. Cell scam claims you’ve won big GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

P

olice are warning the public to be careful of another cellphone scam doing the rounds in recent weeks. This latest scam is using well-known brand names to trick members of the public into thinking that they have won money and other prizes in fictitious promotions. Capt Marie Louw, communications officer from Bishop Lavis, reported that they have been alerted to quite a number of people getting caught by this latest scam. “On Sunday 22 September at approximate-

ly 21:28 a victim received a message on her cellphone from cellphone number 076 473 8227, with the following message: Great prize! You have won R350 000 from Kellogg’s Corn Flakes promo, ref no. 147SA. Call claim agent on 076 503 9462, for your claim, visit: www.kelloggs.co.za. “The next day the victim contacted the cellphone number provided, and spoke to an unknown man who asked for her reference number and the person then confirmed that her cellphone number had won the amount mentioned. “He then informed her to forward the above message to cellphone number 076 503

9462 which the victim did and she then received the following message: ATT: (Name of victim) thank you for joining Kellogg’s services, an authorized FSP. “Your winning prize of R350 000, has been approved. “You are required to pay R1 950 for insurance and admin government fees, before your payment will be authorised. Call Harry or Cindy on 021 839 3145 for payment.” Louw pointed out that the victim deposited various amounts of money as requested, but no winnings came her way and she eventually realised that it was a scam. Lesers kan dieselfde dag reeds kaartjies begin koop by www.cultivaria.com of bespreek by 021 872 9754.

Getting opportunity for the love of the game GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

Sharp The learners who are even more talented are trained at even higher levels at talent identification camps, which are called, Sharp Centres. “These learners, if successful will eventually be taken up into the district academies,” says Mac Mahon. She added that the centre in Bishop Lavis has been identified as a Softball Focus School where learners are trained in the code of softball. “The players represent the school by competing within the midweek WP Softball School League and over weekends, at club level, within the WPSF (WP Softball Federation) where they are members of the St Martins Softball Club, that is based in Bishop Lavis. “While the competitive side is important the ultimate goal is also to create access and opportunity for learners to participate in sport and/or the arts on a daily basis. “Part of it is to give them the chance to enjoy themselves with sport, and show them how discipline can improve their life chances in their community.”

Kaartjies kos R120. V Bespreek by die kerkkantoor by 021 948 2402.

The sport bug is about to bite in the area with the launch of a special project at Bishop Lavis Primary. Learners from schools in the area gathered at the school to be introduced to the new Mass participation, Opportunity, Development and growth programme (MOD). Sharon Mac Mahon, MOD Centre assistan area manager, explained that this was a project involving coaches who were all employed by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) to drive this initiative. “We work in the Bishop Lavis community, at a MOD Centre that is based at the Bishop Lavis Primary School,”she explains. “Here our objective is to provide after school mass participation, development and growth opportunities and access to the school’s learners.” At the centre, the learners participate in various codes of sport, as well as music and dance. In addition, learners that show potential are trained at higher levels and ultimately they will be taken up into the community’s relevant clubs.

Talented little tiger’s eye on golf’s Tiger GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

There’s a “little Tiger” from Belhar who has his eye on the ball for the future. Tristan Galant may only be 11, but he has just come back home after winning the Nomads under-13 Championship that was played at the Fish River Sun during the school holidays. This young champion is the pride of Erica Primary school, and with the help of his family wants to take his talent to the highest level. It helps that dad, Martin, is an accredited South African Golf Development Board coach, and uncle, Mervyn, is a former professional – golfing is in their blood. Martin is very proud of his son’s achievements so far. “I enrolled him into the programme along with other learners, and he has made amazing strides since becoming interested in the game when he was seven years old,” he says. “While I do the coaching, it is his own passion for the game that has got him so far, and if he continues in this way I only foresee a bright future for him in the game.” There have been some amazing strides for this budding Tiger Woods, with him making the WP Under-12 teams for the last two years. At Mowbray Golf Club, from where he plays, he was the champion in the B-Division of their club championships after a playoff with some seasoned adult opponents. The youngster is still very humble about his achievements, and thankful for the support he gets from his family. “My father taught me all I know,” he says. “Winning this championship was very exciting, but I was also very proud to be holding that trophy at the tournament, because it is for all the hard work and support that he is giving me and lots of other young players he is coaching. I love playing golf, and yes, I have dreams of taking on the “Tiger” someday,” he laughs.

Promoting health, and having fun GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

It was all about health at Belvue Primary on Saturday when they held their second Health Promoting day. This project was initiated by the UWC Occupational Therapy fourth year students who have been at the school throughout the year. Thulisa Saki, one of the students, said that occupational therapy has a crucial role to play within this community. “With this project we aim to empower the community around the school to take control of their health and take ownership of the projects that have been established at the school. “The aim for the day was to promote health within the school and wider community by involving different stakeholders such as the Fire and Rescue Services, Commumed24, the Traffic department as well as UWC HIV/Aids Unit and the rugby club to present about fire safety, road safety, basic first aid as well as to increase awareness about the importance of play and leisure within the school,” she said. Thembi Sikhova, another of the students added that the day was also showcasing the development of the projects that are already running. “We also used this day as an opportunity to show the public what we have been doing here since the school was established as the health promoting school in the area,” she said. “These include the vegetable garden, white paper recycling bin as well as training teachers and learners in first aid.” Learners and parents were captivated by the various demonstrations including those of the fire department, which became very interactive with some of the learners get-

Visitors were also impressed by the school’s dance programme and learners also participated in rugby, mini-cricket, soccer and netball, as well as some “Boere sport” activities. “Belvue Primary recognises the importance of health in the school and remains committed to working together with UWC to ensure a healthy child has a healthy mind,” says Principal Andy Josephus. “The day was a great success as the community came out to show their support.” Saki concluded by thanking all. “We would like to thank the Fire and Rescue Services, Commumed24, Traffic department, UWC HIV/AIDS Unit, Sport, Recreation and Exercise department for being involved and contributing to the success of the day. “At the school we would also like to thank the principal, teacher Angelo Wingrove and the rest of the staff for assisting in the organisation and support. Our clinical co-ordinators Zarina Syed and Inge Sonn also supported us with this project.”

With over a million people having visited the City of Cape Town’s beaches last summer, the City has ensured that all measures are in place to keep beachgoers safe this festive season. The beaches are ready with 400 to 500 trained and accredited lifeguards being deployed to various beaches between 10:00 and 18:00 daily throughout summer. This forms part of the City’s annual Festive Season Safety Plan, in collaboration with Lifesaving Western Province’s volunteer services, the National Sea Rescue Insitute and a medic helicopter. In addition to the above, the City will make beach wheelchairs available at 10 of its beaches. Lifeguards will be deployed at the following beaches: Big Bay (Blue Flag), Clovelly, Fish Hoek, Macassar, Maiden’s Cove, Strandfontein (Blue Flag), Milnerton, Glencairn, Muizenberg (Blue Flag), Strand, Silwerstroom, Alpha, Clifton (Blue Flag), St James, False Bay, Kogel Bay, Danger Bay, Mnandi (Blue Flag), Llandudno (Blue Flag), Bikini (Blue Flag), Hout Bay, Camps Bay (Blue Flag), Gordon’s Bay, and Monwabisi. Residents are urged to keep safe at beaches and behave responsibly while enjoying the City’s amenities. Any emergency and/or distress call regarding a drowning incident can be reported to the City’s 107 emergency number. Dial 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

Metrorail extends invitation to seniors to travel for free Local seniors are invited to experience fun laughter and adventure, without a car. The organisers of Memories and Melodies are also now organising fun, inexpensive outings, on the first Tuesday of every month, with the help of free trips offered by Metrorail to passengers over the age of 60 on Tuesdays. Their next outing will be held on Tuesday 5 November and they will be visiting Parliament, for a tour of the Parliament buildings. They will leave from Platform 2 at Oosterzee, but seniors are encouraged to come earlier to get their tickets (ID required) and socialise. They will arrive in Cape Town at about 10:00, with an hour to stroll to Parliament, where the tour will start at 11:00. This will be followed with a lunch in the canteen. From 14:00, the group will be allowed to listen to parliamentary debate and stay as long as they desire. V The cost of the outing is R5 or R40 with lunch included. Is gr.

Daarom is goeie vriende so van onskatbare waarde. Ware vriende sal by jou staan of val, deur jou prestasies, jou bôggerops, jou seer én jou oorwinnings. En jy vir hulle. Daar is min sulkes. Wees ’n goeie vriend, in sonskyn én stormweer.

Passengers on bakkies not on! In the past week I was overtaken by two heavily loaded bakkies with passengers sitting on top of the actual load. This not only contradicts the seatbelt law but also goes against reasonably sized vehicle loads. For the amount of emphasis placed on wearing a seatbelt, how is it okay to carry passengers on the back of an open top bakkie? Personally, I have had an issue with bakkies or smaller utility vehicles carrying passengers in urban areas for a long time but I don’t feel that people quite grasp the dangers. According to Arrive Alive the restrictions enforced against transporting passengers on the back of an open top bakkie is for those seated, the rear door must be 350 mm in height and when the passengers are standing a minimum of 900 mm in height is required. This seriously needs to be reconsidered: if for some reason this vehicle has to come to an emergency stop, what price are those on the back of the bakkie going to pay? CONCERNED DRIVER Email

“dalk lê die fout by hom!” Vandag is verklarings ingedien. Die son skyn vir ons kind ook! M. ELS Panorama

Taking away my train ticket illegal I am an official of the National Transport Movement (NTM). It is sad to witness how Metrorail staff abuse commuters by taking their monthly tickets if they are found in first class coaches without a Metroplus ticket. Say the person stays in Eerste River, the monthly third-class ticket costs R179.

The commuter is then found in a Metroplus coach without a Metroplus ticket. His/her monthly is then confiscated and it must be fetched from Cape Town plus R40 for a fine. The commuter is now at risk of losing his/her job because he/she must struggle to get a single to Cape Town. For a student who writes tests its worse. What they are doing is robbery because the monthly ticket they confiscate is the commuter’s legal property and it is unlawful to take it. There are legal processes in place how to deal with commuters who do not have tickets. What Metrorail staff are doing is criminal. Staff are not trained properly by accredited tutors in what to do in such situations. They must stop with these wrong and illegal actions. Just imagine a traffic officer issues you with a parking ticket, takes your car and keeps it until you pay your fine what inconvenience you will suffer. Do not allow your constitutional rights to be abused. DENNIS KIKA Email Metrorail acting regional manager, Terra Nongqongqo responds: The best way to avoid being caught is to be law abiding – customers in possession of a valid ticket for the correct travelling class will not be processed: Metrorail reserves the right to levy a booking fee (currently R40) and/or prosecute persons without valid train tickets. Commuters issued with such a booking fee must insist on a receipt. Hundreds of commuters are removed from trains each month during Metrorail’s fare recovery actions. The cost of non-compliance can be high, as scores end up being prosecuted as a result. Some 185 offenders are prosecuted every month for rail-related offences. In terms of the Legal Succession Act, Act 9 of 1989 commuters must have the correct ticket for their travel class: Our employees are obliged to apply the law without fear of favour.

TILETORIA EXPRESS: OVER 1 700 CYCLISTS

Agony and the ecstasy ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

I

More than 1 700 cyclists competed on Sunday at the Tiletoria West Coast Express. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

magine cycling for 85 kilometres in windy weather. You see the fitter cyclists around you smiling and probably thinking: “This is what it’s all about!” You try and let your mind drift to family, work or anything but the pain is shooting through your legs. They call this the Tiletoria West Coast Express Fun Ride. Fun? Through all the pain you see the serene surroundings and come to the conclusion that the word “fun” is not at all out of place. On Sunday this event drew more than 1 700 keen cyclists from all over Cape Town. They cycled from Sunningdale on the R27, to Atlantis, to Mamré, through Melkbosstrand and finally to Big Bay. One of the more committed cyclists said he has participated in similar events and that this one is by far the best. For those who were not quite up for the 85 km race, there was the 65 km and the 19 km events. Some participants looked just like bona fide calf-muscle-herders but the shorter route

was reserved for the kids, the slightly heavier cyclists and those who wanted fun without the accompanying pain. Event organiser and chairperson of the Outriders Cycle Club, Rodney Beck, says the whole point of the event is to promote cycling to the broader public. “Top cyclists will cycle every day of the week anyway. We need to concentrate on the man in the street, who wants to get on his bicycle, enjoy his cycling and have a bit of a social as well,” he elaborates. Sunday’s event, which is the 10th West Coast Express, drew 1 872 cyclist. According to Beck there were more competitors this year than the last, despite various factors such as the absence of league riders. “We offered fantastic medical assistance on the road, 125 marshals and nine traffic officers, so this made it unbelievably safe for the cyclists,” he concludes. All this added up to an event to remember, and even the most unfit spectator would have wished they too could experience the fun and the pain of the West Coast Express.

Ryers sal teen mekaar in ouderdomsgroepe deelneem.

Toegang is gratis.

Young guns off to play Sun City After another lengthy and exhausting season for club golfers around the country, the finalists for this year’s Sanlam Cancer Challenge have been determined after the usual club competitions followed by the regional finals. At the age of 13, Connor Degroote (Kenridge Primary) who plays off a 6 handicap is the youngest player in the field. Jean Hugo who is currently in matric at Stellenberg will also stroll the fairways at Sun City. Jean plays off a 3 handicap. This will be the first time these two players from the Durbanville Golf Club get the opportunity to play the Gary Player and Lost City courses. They qualified via the Glacier by Sanlam Junior Series. A massive 36 067 participants – 29 645 men and 6 422 women – took part in the 21st edition of this competition. Countrywide 801 club competitions decided who would go forward to the regional finals from which the national finalists for Sun City were decided in A, B and C handi-

cap divisions. The overall winners in the different divisions (men and ladies) will be determined over two rounds being played at the Lost City and Gary Player courses respectively on 21 and 22 October. No fewer than 441 clubs took part, and that constitutes almost every single club in South Africa and Namibia. After almost R3.2 million was raised in 2012 for cancer awareness through this unbelievable project, the organisers set themselves the target of at least reaching that amount with the 2013 competition. With only a couple of weeks left before the final analysis will be made public, it seems the target is well within reach. The finalists from Western Province in order of player, division and representative club are: Ladies: Karen Denman (A), Clovelly; Perdita Newman (B), Simon’s Town; Belinda Palframan (C), De Zalze. Men: Dudley Rosier (A), Westlake; Adam Alhadeff ( B), Clovelly; Paul Barrett (C), Clovelly.

COACH: ‘ACHIEVED OUR OBJECTIVES’

Callies’ win a motivator LIAM MOSES

J

ordan Callies has shifted focus after winning the Coke Cup on Saturday. Callies qualified for the Safa SAB Regional League promotional play-offs after winning the Rygate Local Football Association (LFA) Super League earlier this year. Callies coach Anthony Barnes is certain his side can make it into the fourth tier of South African football after Saturday’s Coke Cup victory. “We are already there, that’s how confident I am,” he says. “We have already beaten Safa Second Division and SAB League teams in the Coke Cup this year.” Callies knocked out several semi-professional sides on their way to the Coke Cup final, including the Salt River Blackpool and Milano United Second Division teams who finished sixth and seventh respectively last

season. Callies were also losing finalists in the Rygate LFA Knock-out Tournament this year. Barnes says the team is one step away from making it a perfect season. “We achieved our objectives. I said we would win the league and the Coke Cup and the next one is the SAB League playoffs,” he says. Barnes may be confident, but his players will need to improve in several areas if they are to continue their climb up the professional football ladder. Callies started the Coke Cup final with verve and intensity and raced to a 3-0 lead within 30 minutes. Reagon Brander stole the lead after just two minutes, Shafiek Mally doubled the score just five minutes later and Kashief Alba made it 3-0 in the 25th minute. But instead of knocking the wind out of

Sporting United, the third goal caused Callies to slack off and lose concentration. Ebrahim Davids pulled a goal back for Sorting late in the second half and struck twice more in the 30th and 35th minutes to level the scores. The equaliser forced Callies to wake up and they reclaimed the lead in the dying minutes of the game through Showen Sture. Barnes was happy with the performance despite the poor defensive display. “At the end of the day it was about who wanted it more and we were hungrier. The

guys performed well,” he says. “The plan was to secure the game in the first 15 minutes through all out attack with five attackers. But we are not used to playing on a field this heavy. They are used to playing on a hard surface. So they had a lot of cramps.” Jordan Callies will face off against the league winners from the other LFA’s affiliated to Safa Cape Town in the promotion playoffs. The date of the play-offs has not yet been confirmed.
