This is the reaction from the community after Dan Plato, MEC for Community Safety, released the latest information received on the conviction rate crisis on the Cape Flats from the national government. In his response to the information that he received he said that it sheds some light on why it appears that the gangsters are acting with impunity. While initially requesting information about Hanover Park, further investigation revealed that closer to home in Elsies River, Bishop Lavis and surrounding areas the statistics were also disturbing. “In June this year, as part of my oversight role over the South African Police Service (SAPS) I requested information on the number of successful convictions in Hanover Park and other areas. “The information I received was shocking. “Over a three year period zero convictions had been secured out of

87 cases of gang related murder and attempted murder in Hanover Park. “My colleague in the National Assembly has now been informed by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development that since 2007/2008 until 2011/2012, out of 197 cases of murder registered at the Philippi police station (responsible for Hanover Park), there have only been 35 convictions. “This is a disastrous 17,7 % success ratio over five years. “If one considers the convictions against the number of prosecutions finalised it is only slightly better at a 25,3 % success ratio for convicting murderers. “This means that, to date, at least 75 % of the murders in Hanover Park and the surrounding area have gone unpunished! “In Bishop Lavis the conviction rate is disturbingly less than 10 % over the last five years,” he said. In total, over the past five years, for Hanover Park, Lavender Hill, Elsies River, Manenberg and Bishop Lavis, SAPS referred 1 469 murder cases to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). . ‘Take weeds out by roots’ . From page 1. Of the 1 469 murders 921 prosecutions were finalised, and 174 convictions were secured. This means that over a five-year period only 11,8 % of the murder cases have seen someone convicted for their crimes. While Plato has announced plans to bring up this conviction rate there are people in the community who feel that the time has come for him to research the root of the problem that has destroyed our communities. “Plato has good intentions, but he must look at what started the rot,” said Mohamed Ockers, from Elsies River. “I grew up in Bellville South, lived in Bishop Lavis and know what I am talking about when I say that our communities were poor but beautiful gardens where our children were strong in their fight for a better life. “All these communities produced strong leaders in business and other fields despite poverty and unemployment. “Yes, there was crime and some gangsters but they were in the minority. If you go around today they are in the majority.” A friend of Ockers, Joey Ariefdien, from Blue Downs, agreed with these sentiments pointing out that since the end of apartheid,

in the late 80s there had been a concerted effort in pop culture to glamourise gangsterism. “When it started happening we knew that something was wrong but we did not say anything,” he said. “The radios and television started pushing more gangster culture into the limelight, and it just kept growing out of control. “Today we are seeing the results of that brainwashing and its effects are being felt in all communities. Its not just in the poorer communities that the gangs have started operating. “Our children do not understand the culture that was the foundation for many of us from the ghettoes. We looked up to positive role models in arts and culture, as well as in our neighbourhoods. “Teachers, artists and other intellectuals were honoured and respected. Nowadays our children are taught, through pop culture, to sneer at these attributes.” Ockers concluded by saying that our communities were still gardens where beautiful plants were waiting to flourish. “The soil is still the same, like it was for all of us. Plato if you want to make a difference take out the weeds by the roots.”

. Vir meer inligting oor Eaglevlei se gesinsdag, skakel 021 884 4713.

Started in 1997 the shelter’s mission was, and remains to not only house but also care for the bodies, minds and spirits of its residents. The name “Elim” is derived from a passage in the bible related to an oasis in the wilderness, called Elim and that is what the shelter has been striving to offer for the past 15 years. Carlos Mesquita, an administrator at the shelter, pointed out that although registered with the provincial Department of Social Development as a transient shelter, which in effect speaks of temporary housing of the homeless, experience has taught them that when you open your doors to the destitute, they are in fact responsible for making a lasting contribution to the life of that individual and as such Elim has become much more than merely a transient shelter. “In 2012, as we celebrate the centre’s 15th year, Elim proudly stands as a centre that takes individuals through a holistic process of rehabilitation with the ultimate aim being that of true and lasting re-integration of its residents back into society. “We have partnered with a number of organisations such as churches, clinics, rehabilitation centres, neighbouring businesses, the City of Cape town and other shelters to this end and today offer both in-house and out-house programmes aimed at both reha-

bilitation and re-integration,” he said. People come to Elim either directly off living on the streets, through the referral of field workers, public intervention or referrals from other organisations. “Our initial assessment includes finding out about the person’s origin as well as their current situation,” he continued. “This then leads to a more intensive interview with the social worker and a decision is then taken on the way forward for that individual. “The shelter also provides free assistance with regards to job seeking, providing CV services as well as utilising our business partners and internet job sites. We also have a number of in-house programmes which aim to teach residents skills which will assist them to become self reliant.” Mesquita also pointed out that in order to offer the services that are required to make an impact on these lives entrusted to them they are very dependent on donations. “Financial donations are hard to come by these days,” he said. “Food donations are utilised by the shelter and any excess is shared with other organisations in the area such as Cravenby Centre and other non-funded organisations. “Donations are often received that cannot be utilised by the shelter and in order to put these donations to good use a second-hand store was opened. “The goods in the store are given free of charge to residents in need and the balance is sold to the general public.” The shelter is at 47, 3rd Avenue, Elsies River, and further information from 021 591 2824, email elimnightshelter@telkomsa.net.

Hip-hop against drugs GARY VAN DYK

Hip-hop will be happening in Bonteheuwel at the end of the month to tackle drugs and crime. Malcolm Oppel is a young entrepreneur in the community who is planning a major event in the area to showcase talent in the area, to show youth that there is an alternative to drugs and crime. “I am planning the event for 28 September and calling on all in the community to join me in my passion to encourage youth to live positive lives,” he said. “While I have a background in

tourism in my personal capacity I have lost a brother to drugs, and that is why I am so determined to make a difference to the lives of youth at risk. “This could also be the start of similar events on a regular basis because if we show youngsters how they can enjoy themselves without drugs they will motivate the whole community.” Oppel pointed out that while the day will include a variety of entertaining activities like drama, dancing and music, he is inviting any organisations that would like to feature to contact him. “Any organisation or individual

who feel that they can contribute are welcome to contact me,” he said “We will even offer place for organisations to put up stalls for the day so that the community can see the arts and crafts that people are doing in the community. “Churches and mosques are also invited to be a part of the event because the curse of drug abuse does not ask what your religion is when it strikes and destroys families.” There is also a call for sponsors to come on board for special prizes for the participants on the day. Oppel can be contacted on 076 628 5241, or email malcolmoppelevents@yahoo.com.

Delighted at office furniture donation GARY VAN DYK

Adult education received a boost with a major donation last week. The Elsies River Community Learning Centre in Leonsdale was very happy when they were contacted by the Business Development Unit and informed that the company wanted to donate desks, chairs and other office equipment to the centre. Taryn Speirs of the company explained that they were a corporate training college for working adults, who moved premises at the end of August. “When we moved we knew that we wanted to give this equipment to a needy school or education facility like this in the community,” she said. “After contacting the department of education the centre in Elsies River was recommended and when we discovered what they were doing in the community it was an easy choice for us. “As a company that focuses on adult education we strongly believe in supporting the upliftment and development of the future generation through initiatives like this,” she said.

Mike Pick, who heads the facility in Elsies River, was overjoyed at the donation. “We are happy that there are organisations like this who believe in what we are doing in the community,” he said. “This centre not only benefits the people of Elsies River but the surrounding areas like Goodwood, Parow, Belhar and Bellville, where there are adults or youth who want to further their education.” Pick pointed out that in the education field they concentrated on offering classes in the educational field and skills training. “We have facilities for youth in the area to complete their matric if they left school early, but there is also basic education for adults in the community who did not have the chance to attend school. “These learners in the community provide the most heartwarming stories because you cannot describe the joy of a senior citizen reading a book or a letter for the first time. “We also provide training in a number of crafts and construction skills because our aim is also to fight unemployment in the community,” he said. For more information about activities and classes at the centre, Pick can be contacted on 021 933 5619 during office hours.

Koningin Laurika kom ‘huis toe’ MARITA MEYER

. Kaartjies vir die konsert wissel van R110 tot R160. Dit is beskikbaar by www.cultivaria.com of by 021 872 9754.

Dinner in the Dark an eye opener DESIREÉ RORKE

For me the most terrible thing of having been “blind” for an hour or two, was the constant anxiety of being acutely aware of every single sound or shuffle behind me or next to me, and not knowing what it was. How would you experience blindness if given a slight glimpse into the world of the visually disabled? This is exactly what the non-profit organisation Blind SA, aims to do with their annual Dinner in the Dark, campaign, and the insights gained by diners is startling. This year’s event, hosted by the Cape Peninsula branch, took place at the Protea Hotel on Saturday evening. Arriving in a dining room where the lights were dimmed down to resemble a late twilight, I at first felt comfortable in the low light. As long as I have the flashlight on my cellphone nearby, in case I had to make a note or two. But where is my cellphone? I opened my bag and started fiddling around for my phone in vain. A few seconds later I found myself gripped in fear. Finally giving up, I stormed out of the shadowy room and headed straight for the bathroom, where I

Veronica Vosloo was one of the blind waitrons serving the diners. Here she serves Julian Lenders. Photo: Desireé Rorke successfully retrieved my elusive phone under the clinical bright lights. The realisation hits me like a train in the night: “What would I do, if the lights are never switched on again? This is the unfortunate reality for nearly half a million people in South Africa currently and the numbers are growing.

Blind SA is an organisation of blind people for blind people, and aims to do whatever is necessary to improve the quality of life of blind South Africans, to enable them to play an active role in the socio-economic life of the country. “With this event we not only raise funds to help our fellow blind, but also to create awareness. We want society to realise that we as blind

people have many capabilities,” said Veronica Vosloo, a fundraiser at Blind SA, who lives in Kraaifontein. According to André Vosloo, chairman of the Peninsula branch, much disinformation still exists about blind people. “A few decades ago blind people were employed only as switchboard operators, whereas today they work in many fields from physiotherapy to the business world and information technology industry,” he said. Blind SA was established by blind persons in 1946, during a time when blind people in South Africa had no opportunities and was forced to advocate for themselves. “Back then blind people had no jobs. They worked in workshops and instead of receiving a salary they were compensated in meals. Society needs to know that we as blind people can be an asset to the community,” he said, an argument that was proved aptly when a group of blind waitrons entered the dining room to serve the seeing diners, who then had to place blindfolds over their eyes. The waitrons received a brief layout of the room, ten minutes prior and dinner was served without a single glitch.

The same cannot be said for the diners however. Finding the food on your plate and then directing your fork in the right direction, in itself is rather challenging, providing that the food stays on the fork. And you’re nothing but lucky should you find your wine glass on the table again for a swig of encouragement. Apart from the obvious, the dinner conversation was strikingly different than usual. It was as if everyone at the table was suddenly switched on by a giant hand, genuinely listening to the others with a keen sense of interest, as opposed to just hearing the talker out, before spitting out another non-consequential utterance. But as I slowly found my bearings in this dark world, one action at a time, there was one thing that caught my attention, genuine fun and laughter. For the entire time that I kept the blindfold on, my other senses were acute and I “looked” at things, in an altered way, with a deeper insight perhaps. With half my dinner next to my plate, and a table full of knocked over wine glasses, the significance of the message is crystal clear. Blind people are more than capable of living a meaningful life.

Die komende naweek se program (tuisspan eerste) is: Belhar t Schotsche Kloof/ Walmer, Tygerberg t Universiteit Kaapstad, Goodwood t Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege, Bellville t Helderberg, Collegians t Hands & Heart.

Hole in one for the kids The TygerBurger and Sanlam Golf Day in aid of the SA Children’s Home has once again drawn the attention of some big names who will play on Thursday 20 September. World-renowned motivational speaker and magician Wolfgang Riebe will be the master of ceremonies on the night. Former Springbok wing Breyton Paulse and Afrikaans singer Wynand Strydom also confirmed they will tee it up on the Durbanville Golf Course. Registration starts at 11:00 and the tee times start at 11:30. The cost will be R2 500 per fourball and for an additional R300 your company can advertise on the course for the day. Companies that will not be playing are still welcome to come and promote their company at R500 per hole. All rounder: Cravenby Senior Secondary is very proud of Ahmed Essa, an educator at the school. Not only is he a very good maths, science and tech nology teacher, but very handy with bat and ball when it comes to Action Cricket. He recently repre sented Western Province in the InterProvincial Tournament that was pla yed in Somerset West. They did very well in the tournament, only losing in the final to get the silver medal. Photo: Gary van Dyk

Belhar going strong to attract new members Belhar Cricket Club, whose first team plays its cricket in the 2A Division of the WPCA, is based at Symphony Park in Belhar and is on a drive to attract new members. The club has a junior component of about 50 boys who compete for places in the three age group teams of u-11, u-13 and u-15. These teams have performed very well in the first half of the season earlier this year and have beaten top teams such as WPCC and St Augustine’s in the competition. Junior practises take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 16:00 to 18:00 and will commence towards the beginning of October. The u-15 team will be competing in the Township T20 tournament scheduled for 1 to 3 October. Another exciting highlight will be when the u-11s will, once again, be involved in a match against Primrose Hill from London, England, on Saturday 16 February 2013. The team from Primrose Hill have played against the u-11 team on two previous occasions and enjoyed the match so much that they have extended an invitation to the club to once again play against them next year. Randall Bugan will be taking charge of the

junior cricket training this season and can be contacted on 085 503 2588. With such a lot of juniors members the club would also like to appeal to those interested in assisting with the managing of these youngsters on a Saturday. The club also has two senior teams that compete in the 2A, and Reserve E Divisions of the WPCA respectively. The first team is quite a vibrant, young and positive team and they look forward to realising their potential and play great cricket to bring glory to Belhar. Senior practises take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. Pre-season training, under the watchful eye of senior coach, Mario Hugo, is in full swing and those eager to show their mettle are welcome to join in. Further information about the club is available from Kevin Lubbe on 074 471 5961 or Randall Bugan on 084 503 2588, Mario Hugo on 082 562 1836, and Jacob Witbooi on 083 588 2660. . The club is holding a karaoke fundraiser at the Belhar Civic Centre on Friday 14 September, to assist members who struggle to meet the financial commitments of playing cricket.
