OPPORTUNITY: FATHERS AND SONS BOND

Major day for youth and dads GARY VAN DYK

T

he spirit of youth who fought against apartheid comes alive in the community this weekend. This year 16 June is special for youth and fathers because it will be celebrated on the same day. Some of those youth from 1976 and the 1980s are probably all fathers now, but there is still the need to empower a new generation of youth to become positive forces in their communities. There are a number of events planned to celebrate Youth Day this weekend, and such one major event is planned for Avonwood Sport Field in Elsies River, starting at 14:00. This gathering aims to get our communities together for a day of worship and confession of the bloodshed in our nation and to see the dignity of fathers and children restored in our nation. Rachel Meyer is the local resident who embarked on this journey eight years ago, after working with youth for many years. She was joined on her journey by people who shared her vision and the Exponential Impact Generation organisation was formed.

Healing They will be co-ordinating this event and she says that it must be part of healing the hurt in our communities. “I saw our society with its broken relationships between fathers and their children,” she says. “This is what God wants to restore, not only our earthly relations, but also our relationship with our Heavenly Father.”

Brightening up new ECD centre

Youth Day is in in remembrance of 16 June 1976, where students in Soweto started to demonstrate against receiving “Bantu Education” only in Afrikaans and English by the then apartheid government. Many children died on this day and the days to follow in clashes with the police. “We see many fathers in our society not playing roles that they are supposed to,” continued Meyer.

Sin “Our children are being influenced by the negative influences that they see around them, but as Christians, we believe that the problems in our societies stem from the root problem which is our sin towards God. “Our sin is that we do not recognise God for who He is and do not follow His ways. Yet, there is hope.” The Hervormende Evangelie Sending Kerk, on the corner of Range and Forest roads in Elsies River will also be hosting a Youth Rally starting at 10:00. Their guest speakers on the day will include parliamentary member Dorothy Gobie; Dan Plato, Minister of Safety and Security in the Western Cape and local councillor Charles Esau. In Delft the Masithembele HIV and Aids Enrichment Centre will be hosting a Youth Celebration at the Nelson Mandela Peace Park on Monday 17 June. Sport will be the focus of the day with mini-soccer and netball. Activities will start at 10:00 and the venue is at 125 The Hague. V For more information about the event at Avon wood Sports Field contact Quinton Bosch on 072 137 4210. More information about the event in Delft from Marina on 073 594 2129.

The scene: These two young artists are doing their bit to celebrate Youth Month with this mural on the wall of the Early Child Development centre that is being built in Leons dale. Grant Jurius from Elsies River, sitting, and Jonathan De Goederen from Ravensmead, started on the project during May and it is an initiative funded and organised by the City Department of Social Development. The aim of this project is to provide an artistic and creative environment for the children who will be attending the centre on a daily basis. Besides just being an art mural, the artists have added an interactive section where children can engage with sums and puzzles painted on parts of the wall.

Emails have been doing the rounds saying that Cape Town is on the verge of loadshedding to save electricity. The loadshedding schedule, which is available on the City of Cape Town’s website, will however only be activated if Eskom decides to implement loadshedding. TygerBurger posed a few questions to the energy provider, and at the time of going to press, spokesperson Goitsemang Nkomo said: “Eskom does not currently have plans to loadshed and has not issued a loadshedding schedule.” This news in itself baffled spokespersons at the City of Cape Town, since they were under the impression that loadshedding is imminent.

National spokesperson for Eskom, Hilary Joffee clarified the matter: “Look, we do not have anything planned now. We work from hour to hour, not day to day. Of course we have a plan, but it depends when you ask. Right now (Monday late afternoon), the demand is very high again, so we urge the consumer to be considerate. “We have deals with big energy users, but it is residential customers who must help us avoid loadshedding by conserving energy in the evening in winter. It is a challenge for us to keep the lights on, but people can rest assured that we are doing everything we can to avoid loadshedding.” Peak demand this winter is forecast at 36.8 GW, slightly lower than in 2012, but this is the average for an hour – the “peak within the peak” can go as high as 37 GW – 38 GW.

One of the City’s spokespersons, Hayley van der Woude, explains that they have released times when certain areas may be affected, so that when Eskom gives the go ahead to loadshed then there will not be “complete chaos”. Despite the peak demand being forecasted to be lower than last year, the odds of loadshedding are increased when one considers that Eskom will apparently have to perform long-duration planned maintenance during the coldest months. There are four steps the consumer can do to ease the load during peak (17:00 to 21:00). These are to switch off all geysers and pool pumps, switch off all non-essential lighting, find alternatives to electrical heaters and respond to the Power Alert messages by switching off appliances not in use.

A sporting boost donation GARY VAN DYK Some schools in Elsies River got a boost for their sport recently. Roger Röbeck, owner of Project Freight in the area accompanied by his management team, attended the assembly at Elswood High to give out rugby, soccer and netball balls. This donation was to aid in the holistic development of the children in the community and also to allow the children to engage in sporting activities which will, in the process ensure that the children are kept off the streets. The principal of Elswood Primary was also invited and received balls as well. Both schools will also be introduced to Tag Rugby and further assistance will be granted in the form of rugby and soccer poles. A special thanks was offered to Schlumberger Logelco and Wet Sports, who also contributed to the auspicious event. An open invitation and challenge was also extended to other companies in the area to contribute and assist in the social upliftment. “The community in the Elsies River area

GARY VAN DYK An overseas connection is helping to make a new playground and resource centre in Blikkiesdorp a reality. The TygerBurger is an integral part of this connection because when Beryl Segers went online and read about the plight of children in this area she wanted to be part of making a difference, all the way from Sydney, Australia. Last week she was in the city to visit the area and show her grandchildren Charlotte and Chelsea what they are working for. The Segers family emigrated about 25 years ago, but Beryl said that she has never lost her love for the country of her birth. “I’ve always kept in touch with my family and friends here,” she said. “Helping to raise funds for this project over in Australia is part of maintaining that contact, especially this one. “As a child growing up in retreat play areas were so important for us as children because it is vital for us to remember that this is where we made our friends, and some of those friendships are lasting a lifetime. “For the children in this area a resource centre is also vital because it is only the motivation to keep up with their education that will empower them.” She also said that it was important for her

grandchildren because they are growing up in an environment where they don’t see such poverty. “I want them to appreciate the opportunities that they have,” she said. “But, they must also grow up with a sense of what they can do to help those less fortunate than themselves, and that is why they have become ambassadors for this project in Australia.” “Now they can tell people exactly what they have experienced on their visit.” The girls collected toiletries, and clothes from their schools in Sydney and handed it out during their visit. The family also helped out at a soup kitchen in the area during their visit, and have started a donation drive for the Winter Feeding Scheme that has already raised more than R7 000 in about two weeks. Lee Warren is the local ambassador for the community in Blikkiesdorp and said they were very thankful for the efforts of the family from Australia. “We are very humbled and thankful for all these efforts because it shows us how much people can care,” she said. “To date we are 80 % there regarding funding the project. “Without the help from Beryl and the Australian donors this project would not have been possible at all.”

There’s a call for the community to stay awake against crime. On Friday members of the Ravensmead Uitsig Cravenby Development Initiative (RUCdi), will be gathering at the derelict structure that used to be Florida Primary for a vigil against crime in the area. Erica Jacobs of the organisation said that over the last two months they have embarked on an enquiry with various government departments regarding this derelict building. “We are in conversation with the Premier’s office and the Department of Public Works regarding its current misuse, possible restoration of the structure and that RUCdi (in memory of the school’s legacy) would like to initiate a Public-Private Partnership in the form of a skills development centre for youth empowerment,” she said. On Friday, in collaboration with church leaders they will host the vigil from 18:00 until 06:00 on Saturday. She added that church and youth leaders will preside over the vigil. The main aims of this exercise were to ignite community engagement and unite voices of active citizens against crime in the area. “We want to send a message to gangs that we will no longer tolerate their destruction of young lives,” added Jacobs. “During this vigil we want to keep the building crime-free, even if only for 12 hours, as a symbolic gesture of possibility, and we want to support the neighbours around the school building against the constant torment that has become part of their daily lives.” In the event of rain the vigil will use the halls of the Anglican and Hollandse Inde-

pendent Churches, two vantage points opposite the abandoned building. The intention is to convene a peaceful gathering, engage participants in community building activity and reconnect with values and morals that will strengthen the community. During the programme they will walk the school perimeter and form a human chain around the building. “We have secured the support from a number of stakeholders, the Ministers Fraternal and youth leaders will preside over the programme while SAPS, CPF and Neighbourhood Watch will assist with security and other resources,” said Jacobs. Pa, seun werk saam vir topwyne DESIREÉ RORKE

D

“O

ns is net soos enige ander skool.

V Kaartjies vir TygerBurger se Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can!konsert, is beskikbaar by Susan Potgieter by 082 487 9458 of tbhskool@sun.ac.za.

These young jazz musicians will blow you away GARY VAN DYK Some young talents are taking to the stage at Artscape this week in celebration of youth month, and the Delft Big Band is part of it all. On Saturday night the 13th Sekunjalo Annual Edujazz Concert will be taking place and this big band will be blowing up a storm with the best of them. The junior side of jazz will be represented by the orchestra of Rondebosch East Primary who are making another appearance at the festival after impressing audiences a few years ago. Another highlight on Saturday will be the performance of the popular MiCasa, who have won some SAMA awards for their soulful house sound. Pride of place must go to the Delft Band who are also back on the bill by public demand. Band leader Ian Smith’s musical proteges

FreeCall lines direct to city Call telephones to areas where low volumes of service complaints and requests are currently being registered because of a lack of landlines or cellphone airtime on the part of residents,” says the City’s mayoral committee member for corporate services, Demetri Qually. The FreeCall lines can be used to contact the city for various enquiries and service requests such as illegal dumping, water leaks, sewer blockages, refuse collection, street lights that are out, pot holes, damaged roads and account enquiries X the calls are free of charge.” V Call the City’s helpline centre on 0860 103 089 for flooding or SMS (maximum 160 characters) to 31220 for more information.

A number of FreeCall lines have been installed across the city to bring municipal services closer to residents, no matter where they live. Most importantly, during the winter season, these lines also make it easier for communities to contact the City of Cape Town to report any faults. The city has installed 67 FreeCall lines in outlying areas and disadvantaged communities. A further 20 lines are set to be connected by the end of July. Many informal settlements, including some where there is hardly any telecommunications infrastructure, will benefit from these new lines. “We are extending the network of Free-

David Kramer’s production of Kat and the Kings. The vocalists in the group, Adelia Douw and David October, are also growing into performers who take to the stage with confidence and always have the crowd begging for more. In July Douw will be attending the prestigious Berklee Music College in America to attend a vocal summer camp for musicians from across the world. Over the past 12 years, this series of concerts has been raising funds for educational bursaries for disadvantaged youth to provide a platform for inspiration and hope. It has also given talented musicians from various schools the opportunity to be mentored by some of the legends of South African music, and some of those early Edujazz alumni are now growing into legends themselves. Auditions end, serious music begins The last 30 of some 80 young aspiring instrumentalists auditioned at in Parow last week to compete in the SAMRO Hubert van der Spuy National Music Competition.

The competition is celebrating its 25th year and takes place at the Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium in Parow from 16 to 20 September. Don’t miss it.

Forum gets projects going GARY VAN DYK The Bishop Lavis Development Forum is getting their projects for empowerment going with the opening of their office at John Ramsey High. They also celebrated getting a donation of two wheelchairs which will be for the use of residents who need it in an emergency. These wheelchairs were donated by the IT department of Sanlam’s Personal Finance division, and forum chairman Quinton Newman explained that they would be available to the community on a loan basis. “We want it to benefit many people,” he said. “There are people who may need it in an emergency when they are injured, and also for people who may not have transport to take a family member to a medical facility when they do not have transport. “This service to the community will come with responsibility because people who want to use it must produce their ID and proof of address to borrow it,” he said. Newman is also appealing to residents with skills to make contact with the forum. “We want to draw up a registry of skilled people in the area,” he said. “As part of our many empowerment projects we want to know what skills there are in our communities. If and when work becomes available we want to know who we can call on in the area, but more importantly these skilled persons can also be part of training projects as well.” V Contact the forum on 021 934 6427 (office hours).

Mixed bag at U3A meet Tygerberg U3A’s monthly meeting will be held on Thursday 13 June at 09:45 for 10:30 at The Theatre hall at the Bellville Civic Centre. A DVD will be screened from 10:00 about “New Zealand, land of rugby, cricket and dramatic scenery”. The cost is R5 for members and R10 for visitors includes tea or coffee and biscuits. The speaker is Professor Gavin Maneveldt who will take guests briefly out of winter with his talk on “Spring wild Flowers on the Road Verges and Public open Spaces.” Bring your friends and guests along. Durbanville’s best season ever The 2012/2013 cricket season was one of the most successful seasons the Durbanville Cricket Club experienced in its 55 years of existence. Despite the lack of sponsorship, funding and limited sports playing facilities, the club has continuously acknowledged and embraced its social responsibility role. The senior section of the club achieved the following achievements during the 2012/2013 season: V WPCA Club of the Year Trophy: 2012/ 2013 season. V First team winners of the WPCA Division 1B League Trophy and Combined 1A/1B Division One Day Championships Trophy. The team was Division 1B AMA 20 semi-finalists and promoted back to WPCA 1A Division. V Second team winners of the WPCA Reserve A Two Day League Trophy. V Third team winners of the WPCA Reserve F Two Day League Trophy and the Day Championships Trophy. An accomplishment achieved two years in a row. V Fourth team ended fourth in the third division A League. V Fifth team ended sixth in the third Division A League. V Sixth team ended second in third Division D League. Promoted to third Division 3C League. V Women’s 1st Team - Ended 3rd in the 40 over League and 3rd in the AMA 20 League

SUPERLIGARUGBY: BELHAR KRY GROOT SLAE

Anything for possession

Durbies bly in wedloop

SAREL BURGER

D

N-N-Nine for Easter Rovers THOMAS CAROLUS Eastern Rovers climbed the Northern Suburbs Football Association Super League table into number 9 on the log when they beat Riverside Rangers 2-1, at Avonwood Park on Saturday afternoon. Rheys De Beer, the Eastern Rovers goalkeeper, pulled off an impressive display in goals but neither team could find the match-winner they were looking for as each team was denied by the crossbar too. The visitors from Matroosfontein were eager to make the top eight , and knew they were up against it, especially against a highly confident Riverside Rangers side. On the other hand , the host were still in the running for the Super League title and they were looking to keep that mathematical chance alive by defeating Eastern Rovers. Gerswin Joseph gave Eastern Rovers the lead before the break and he doubled the

lead midway through the second half before Pierre Swartz scored for the home team. Riverside Rangers created the first significant attack on goal. Kyle Mentoor struck an effort from 20 yards, and it flew well off goal, not troubling De Beer in between the sticks. Some great combination play by Riverside Rangers saw William Jacobs frustratingly denied by the crossbar. His shot rattled the frame of the goal to drop down onto the goal-line before bouncing away from the net. Riverside Rangers had a chance straight after the restart when Mentoor worked his way into the box with the ball, only for a defender to pull off a solid defensive display to steer him away from goal and put the ball out for a corner. A large portion of the second half fell into a dull affair as both sets of players looked to have run out of steam and ideas to get a goal.

Entries for one of Cape Town’s biggest and most popular road running events, the OUTsurance 94.5 Kfm Gun Run, have opened. The event takes place on Sunday 13 October and participants can choose to take part in the 21 km half marathon or 10 km run/ walk and five km fun run/walk, which are aimed at families, younger participants and beginners. Last year the event attracted a record field

of close to 15 500 participants, and race organiser Atlantic Athletic Club is expecting to host close to 18 000 this year. Participants can enter at any Sportsman’s Warehouse or online at www.thegunrun.co.za. Entries close on 29 September. The Anna Foundation has been appointed as the official beneficiary. All information can be found on the website or by calling Top Events on 021 511 7130.
