) New forum spells out objectives

A safer Elsies River GARY VAN DYK

A safer Elsies River is becoming a reality with the formation of a new forum in the area. Various stakeholders from the community gathered at the Matroosfontein Civic Centre last week for the launch of the Elsies River Multi-Stakeholder Safety Forum, as part of building a safe Elsies River. At the launch Gavin Maggot, of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, who is also chairperson of the organisation,

explained that the launch was the fruition of plans that started back in 2008. “In 2008, the Open Society Foundation for South Africa through its Criminal Justice Initiative and in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Community Safety embarked on a new strategy to support efforts to promote community safety that are cognizant of both the need for immediate law enforcement and for long-term crime prevention, and Elsies River was identified as a pilot site for the project that will spread to all areas in the

Western Cape,” he said. “The partners believe a balanced approach, which also recognises and seeks to address the social, economic and environmental drivers of crime, provides better prospects for long-term safety. “Objectives of the project include testing all these assumptions, to add to the the general development of knowledge in the sector, and make a real impact on community safety. “These objectives will be achieved by facilitating the implementation of provincial priorities

and safety strategies through locally focused safety plans.” The forum is a dedicated group of individuals from across the political spectrum in the area, representatives from government departments as well as community organisations. Their objectives include reviewing safety in Elsies River and developing safety plans; also to monitor and evaluate the progress of the implementation of safety plans and the effect on actual levels of and perceptions of safety. These outcomes will be commu-

nicated to stakeholders and relevant parties so that effective resources can be mobilised for effective implementation of the safety programmes. Patricia de Lille, Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town was the keynote speaker, and applauded the initiation of the forum. “It is a great pleasure to come here to show support when communities take initiatives like this, and the city must support and work with communities in these situations.” . Maties dish up breyani GARY VAN DYK

Maties were making a difference in the community last week. About 250 first-year students invaded Delft and surrounding areas on Friday as part of the university’s Community Interaction Day. This event forms part of the new MAD2 initiative, the replacement for what used to be known as Jool activities to raise money for local charities. Jo-Ann Bate, the student representative for community interaction said that participating students of Tygerberg

Campus, the Medical and Health Sciences Faculty of Stellenbosch University, were divided into groups which went out to 10 different schools in the area. “Once at the various schools, they cooked and dished up a meal (breyani) for each learner,” she said. “We also prepared food for the patients at the Day Hospital. Approximately 15 000 meals were served to the community during the course of the day.” She added that this was only one part of their activities for the day. “The second part of the initiative was the preparation and performance of a play, by the first years, based on a topic

which was identified by each principal as an issue affecting their specific school. “It was a very successful event and we were happy to work closely with Kobus Pauw, the community partner at Delft and Avril Whate, senior programme manager of MGD (Maties Gemeenskap Diens) Tygerberg, to ensure that everything went smoothly,” she said. The participants would also like to thank Grace Feeding scheme for providing manual assistance, Intercape for the transport, Bellville Market for the fresh produce, as well as the Delft Schools and community for their involvement.

. From page 1. “An initiative like this is important because while police, and Metro Police have their role to play, they cannot be everywhere all the time. “Sometimes there must be eyes and ears in the community and an example of this is with women and child abuse when it occurs behind closed doors, and only reported afterwards. “This highlights the need for partnerships to keep the community safe and there’s nothing better than communities starting to take charge of their safety issues with initiatives like this.” She also pointed out that despite statistics about some crimes coming down which is good and important for planning and budgets there is still the need for everyone to feel safe wherever they are. “This kind of initiative will instil the motivation to all in the community to want to play their part in making their neighbourhoods safer, and as government we will support you. “With an initiative like this the support will be available after consultations with the structures within the community, so that the most effective steps can be taken to solve safety issues in the community. “I must commend you for taking this step because it is going to improve the safety in your community and I hope that it will inspire other communities to do the same.” Maggot concluded by saying that the Elsies River Safety Plan wants to achieve a community where families and young people are supported, programmes and services are available, the youth have sufficient opportunities for recreation and skills development, while alcohol and substance abuse is addressed through positive awareness programmes and access to treatment and support. “We also aim to see that safe schools are integrated into and supported by the community, and an effective and trusted criminal justice system is in place ... all must feel safe and there is prosperity for all.”

Eyewitness Wayne van Doesburgh was just a few metres further from where he’s standing here when the second ATM bomb exploded in Goodwood on Friday. Photo: André Bakkes TygerBurger talked to the only witness, vice-chairperson of the local community policing forum, Wayne van Doesburgh, who lives about 100 metres from the ATMs. “At 03:07 I got an SMS from my bank about transfers and then a few minutes later I heard a massive explosion. First I thought it was the place next door, but then I saw a white vehicle and three tall men across the road,” he says. Against all reason Van Doesburgh walked towards the commotion at the ATMs, but then another bomb went off. “I was about 20 meters away, but it was amazing, because they were standing right next to the ATM.” According to him the car with four suspects sped away almost immediately after the second bomb went off. memorised the car registration number and even drove down Milton Road for a while, but he couldn’t spot the vehicle. The police also arrived on the scene “within minutes”. Van Doesburgh says he would be more cautious in foreign surroundings, but because he virtually grew up in the neighbourhood, it feels like it’s his own back yard. “I’m struggling to accept that this criminal element is coming into our neighbourhood. That’s also why I’m part of the CPF – to do what we can and let these people know that they’re not welcome,” he concludes. Just like the incident on Friday, two ATMs were bombed in the latest incident. This time, three men armed with rifles are believed to be involved and they fled the scene with two containers and an undisclosed sum of cash. Provincial police spokesperson, Warrant Officer November Filander elaborates: “At approximately 03:30 Goodwood Police were alerted of an explosion at an ATM at Goodwood Mall. On the scene they found that two ATMs were damaged by what we believe were three armed men. The suspects then fled in an unknown direction. A case of damage to property was registered and nobody was arrested or injured.” He says that the investigation is still in its early stage and they cannot yet establish what kind of explosives were used. Filander continues: “The latest trend that ATMs are blasted by explosives are a matter of concern for the Western Cape police, and every endeavour will be made to apprehend the suspects.” The second bombing occurred last Friday morning on the corner of Vasco Boulevard and Milton Road. According to Goodwood police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis, the first bomb exploded at about 03:10 and then a few minutes later another bomb reverberated through the suburb. Two adjacent Absa ATMs were targeted, but despite these being severely damaged, Theunis couldn’t confirm if the perpetrators escaped with any money.

Mistaken racial identity can cause red faces, when the rest of the world thinks you’re a whitey! You can’t judge a book by its cover, and in the new South Africa certain segments of our nation must remember that, a whiter shade of pale, may not be as it seems. I have to confess that during my lifetime there have been some embarrassing moments, especially growing up during apartheid, because I am a little “fair of complexion” as my late grandmother used to say. The problem is that even now the uglier side of the legacy of apartheid raises its ugly head when the mistake pulls me into some conspiratorial conversation, about the stereotypes of race. I was recently at a gathering where I ended up as the only “person of colour” in the group. The topic of crime and gangsterism came under discussion and the statement was made that despite the “new” South Africa we (coloureds) still choose to become gangsters, even alluding to the music that was played on some radio stations that we supposedly listen to. How every video that you saw showed a black man as a gangster, our women as prostitutes. What really hit home about people’s perceptions and enforcing of stereotypes was the apartheid strategy of saying that we were “childlike” and could never handle freedom if it was given to us. Luckily the years have taken their toll on my former temper where such discrimination was concerned, so a calm announcement was made: “I am so-called coloured” and it did not help having a name-tag with a egte Hollandse surname like Van Dyk. Once the red faces had turned to normal I took up the conversation again and explained that maybe they should look beyond the stereotypes that our “pop” culture was selling to the world.

I gave them a bit of my history of growing up during apartheid where there was an underground culture of music not influenced by “Springbok Radio”, and it was a culture of music that definitely played its part in the struggle against apartheid. Unfortunately in the new South Africa that culture has been forgotten and neglected. I explained that while racial discrimination had been taken off the statute books, “whites” had discovered new ways to separate the nation in the broadcast media. In the old days music was music and we never put it into “boxes” as they do now, and the new way to support this discrimination was the alleged statistics of Audience Ratings. If you ever complain about the crap that passes as music nowadays then some bright-eyed PR person (normally of the formerly advantaged persuasion) jumps out of the woodwork to shout: “But, its what the PEOPLE want!” Then she whips out boxes of pie-charts, and reams of analytical statistics to prove that all is right with the world. I am sorry but I have yet to meet the mother who is delighted that her son is following the role models that are forced on him and has been accepted into a gang after his first killing, the daughter who is lured into addiction and forced into prostitution, the learners at a school in the township that is used as a gang battle field. Where are the people that said this is what they want? I hope that after the very interesting discussion, my fellow countrypersons have an awareness that even during apartheid, skin-colour was not always a reliable yardstick. The stereotyping that is still given out to the world is not of our doing, but as long as the world is ruled by the piechart, the suffering in our communities will continue. Next week: The K-word and jazz, another stereotyping gone to hell!

. 12 April: Hoërskool Stellenberg, 021 919 1029 of 082 495 6738. . 13 April: Hoërskool Durbanville, 021 975 2582 en Woelwaters-dagsorg, 021 975 2582. . 15 Mei: Laerskool Aristea, 082 785 3340 en Laerskool Mikro, 021 903

2126 of 084 580 8170. . 16 Mei: Hoërskool Tygerberg, 021 939 2023. . 17 Mei: Andre Botma-hulpfonds, 072 951 1800 en Dunatos, 021 919 9585. . 18 Mei: Alta du Toit-nasorgsentrum, 021 913 2106 of 082 411 2411. As jy dus ’n oud-leerder is en graag jou alma mater wil help (en moeg geeet is aan pannekoek), hoekom koop jy nie ’n kaartjie nie? Sodoende help jy jou skool én jy gee jou maagspiere oefening...want lag gaan jy lag! Kaartjies is beskikbaar by die bogenoemde nommers. . FunnyKaap sal ook by vanjaar se KKNK op die planke wees en op 24 Februarie by Oude Libertas in Stellenbosch.

Local councillor, Nas Abrahams, who along with is wife, Asa, organises the activities of the group, said that parents and children were delighted with their achievement, especially the huge number of new members to the team. “The team did very well although there is room for improvement, but then again we have only been taking part for the past three years and competing against much more experienced teams. “Amongst our first prizes was the Exhibition and Best Band items as well as a stunning first prize for the Afrikaans Combine Song, which was the cherry on top. “Other prizes included the Adult Male Solo and Comic Song which was performed by Phillip Dodgen, our star performer.” Abrahams pointed out that the most spectacular item, the Exhibition and Best Band item was a show stopper. “The crowd went mad,” he says. “The theme of the exhibition was ‘Keep the Peace in Hangberg’ and the hours of rehearsals with the children and adults alike paid its dividends. “Our choreographer Farieda Salie who is also a member of the team did exceptionally well to get the team to peak at the right time. “I suppose it also helps that I dreamt up the theme and floor pattern, and it helps that I like to do some part-time DJ work and events planning, giving us the edge to produce a

We had our ups and downs, but it encouraged us to do better,” he added.

“Our planning is in order for this coming season and we look forward to another successful year. We will be establishing our own drum major troupe and jazz band during this year. “Lastly I want to thank all our parents, friends and family who share our vision for the future.”

. Kaartjies vir Shirley Valentyn is beskikbaar by Computicket. WEN! WEN! WEN!

In love at the Civic A concert, entitled Love Connection II, will be on stage at the Bellville Civic Centre on Saturday 26 February. The concert starts at 19:30 and the doors open at 18:30. A donation of R50 is asked for the concert or R60 when paying at the door. Artists Don Veno, Camillo Lombard, Liezle Levendal, Alvin Hendrics and Stand Out will perform, while Ashley Pienaar will act as MC. Giving back part of their plan for school GARY VAN DYK

A group of former Bonteheuwel High learners have some big plans for their alma mater. At the end of January some learners from the 1980s got together at Wynberg Park for a reunion celebration, and to make plans to plough some resources back into the school. While there was not such a good response to the group’s appeal on Facebook, they are still determined to continue their plans to form a bigger association of former learners who are prepared to work with them.

“This is just a start and will motivate us to have more such events in the future,” said Ursula Moses Munnik, one of the founder members of the group on Facebook. “We have started this initiative, because we feel that the school gave us a good foundation in education to make a success of our lives, even though many of us came from disadvantaged circumstances. “Our aim is to make contact with all former learners, schoolfriends, teachers and ex-teachers from the school to work towards assisting the school and its present learners where needed.” She added that along with fellow former learner, Sharon Manus Fou-

rie, they intend to arrange more social and other functions with the intention of helping the school and community. “We intend starting with Bontheuwel High School and therefore call upon all ex-learners to contact us and come on board this nonprofit group. “It is important that we go back to our educational roots and do something to motivate present learners to achieve their positive potential, no matter their circumstances.” Former learners who like to be part of this initiative can call Ursula on 082 573 8557, or email Umunnik@gmail.com.

Enjoying the reunion in Wynberg Park were, from left, (maiden surnames in brackets), Clive Jantjies, Ursula (Moses) Munnik, Arthur Minnaar, Char maine (Van der Berg) Smith, Ralph September, Sharon (Manus) Fourie and Kenneth Matthias

Help is at hand for addiction Cancer never sleeps Anyone aged 18 or older is welcome to attend. Referrals to the centre are generally made by family or friends, colleagues, the media, hospitals or clinics, police and law enforcement agencies, NGOs, churches, and alcohol and drug helplines. Those who visit the centre are screened and assessed and then referred to the relevant therapist in order to join the treatment programme. The programme consists of individual or co-joint counselling sessions (including family members), early recovery skills groups, relapse prevention groups, social support groups and family education groups (where family members are given vital information to assist

in their understanding of addiction and recovery). Clients are seen at least three to four times a week and groups are open so anyone can join at any time. Once clients have completed the free programme, they have the option of remaining in the programme for as long as necessary. For more information about the programme, please contact: . Cancer never sleeps and you can be part of a unique relay to raise awareness. The fourth Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) Relay For Life event will be taking place on Friday 23 March at the Vygieskraal Stadium in Athlone, and the organisation is looking for teams to march through the night in support of sufferers, and families of those who have died of the disease. This event will get people walking around the clock for 12 hours when they participate in raising funds and creating awareness in the fight against cancer. Teams of between 10 and 15 people are invited to register and be part of this fun overnight event.

If you have a drug problem, help is at hand. The City of Cape Town’s four outpatient alcohol and drug treatment sites are running free 16-week substance abuse rehabilitation programmes, based on the Matrix model. “This is part of our goal to create a caring city, where all residents are given support, particularly in times of crisis,” said mayoral committee member for health, Lungiswa James. The rehabilitation sites, which are situated at the city’s Table View, Delft South, Tafelsig and Khayelitsha clinics, are open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:30.

The aim being that at least one team member will be walking the track at all times. Cancer never sleeps and with this in mind, those participating in the night’s event are kept awake by a very entertaining programme taking place on and around the special stage sponsored by Coca-Cola. Teams are encouraged to do some fundraising before as well as during the actual event. Cansa Relay For Life events are community owned and volunteer driven. To become part of this fun, overnight event and help change the lives of those affected by cancer, please contact the organising committee Michelle on 082 588 6566, or Kevin on 082 788 1181.

Valhalla Utd make it to final 32 THOMAS CAROLUS

UITBLINKER BY MTBS

Valhalla United have qualified for the final 32 of the Metropolitan Premier Cup. They played to a 1-all draw against Vasco da Gama in Manenberg on Sunday. The tournament takes place over the Easter week at Erica Park in Belhar. This is also the stage at which all the professional and foreign clubs enter the tournament running. The proceedings commence on the Wednesday before Easter Sunday, with the group stage of the competition. There are a total of eight groups each containing four teams. The draw for the group stage is held approximately three weeks before the tournament begins. Teams are seeded according to previous performance and whether they are established PSL or top level foreign clubs. At the end of the group stage the eight group standings are calculated and the top two placed teams of each group qualify for the winners’ section of the knock-out round. The third placed teams are placed within the Plate Section Knock-out round. The fourth place finishers in each group are eliminated from the tournament. The Winners’ Section Last 16 losers are then sent in to the quarter-finals for the Dullah Omar Mid-Section Semi-finals. The three tiers of the competition then continue through the quarter, and semi-final stages. Easter Monday is the last day of the tournament and serves as the day for all of the finals to be staged as well as the winners’

section semi-finals. The proceedings for the tournament are concluded with the awarding of the player, team, and coach of the tournament awards as well as the crowning of the event champions for the season. Other activities include the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the championship final curtain raiser. Much fanfare surrounds these ceremonies as many local artists and organisations outside of football also get a chance to showcase their talents for the spectators. Teams that qualify for the 2012 tournament: Hanover Park, Junction Rovers, Milano United, Phillippi United, City Lovers, Idas Valley, Maties, Valhalla United, ASD, Crusaders, Glendene, CT Academy, Morgenster United, Ariel Spurs. Weekend results: Hanover Park 1, Junction Rovers 1; Maties 5, Valhalla United 2; Blackpool 2, Belhar Spurs 1; Old Mutual 2, Matroosfontein 1; Idas Valley 1, City Lovers 1; Vasco Da Gama 1, Robinvale Spurs 0; Trinitarians 1, Woodlands 0; Milano United 2, Phillippi United 0; ASD 1, Crusaders 0; Thembalabantu 0, Southend 0; CT Football Academy 2, United 2; Glendene United 2, Rygersdal 0; Riverside Rangers 0, Morgenster United 1; Ariel Spurs 0, Central 0; Hanover Park 1, Woodlands 0; Trinitarians 0, Junction Rovers 1; Blackpool 0, Phillippi 1; Belhar Spurs 0, Milano United 1; Old Mutual 0, Idas Valley 1; City Lovers 2, Matroosfontein 1; Vasco Da Gama 0, Maties 1; Robinvale Spurs 1, Valhalla United 5; ASD 1, Southend 1; Crusaders 3, Themalabuntu 0; CT Football Academy 0, Rygersdal 0; United 0, Glendene 2; Riverside Rangers 1, Central 0.
