A salute to the police

Police officers around the Western Cape gathered to celebrate National Police Day on Friday with a celebration at the Athlone Stadium. Officers from various stations in the Peninsula, and the Police Band (in picture) took to the streets to march to the stadium. On this day, members of the police remember the sacrifices that men and women in blue have made and continue to make as they provide safety for all who live in South Africa. The police continue to applaud those members who give dignity to the blue uniform and especially honour the bravery of those members whose commitment was met with loss of life. Photo: Rashied Isaacs

Watching the watch GARY VAN DYK

Roosendal residents in Delft are taking a stand against the neighbourhood watch becoming a law unto themselves. Angry residents gathered in the area last week to complain about the treatment that they were getting from the Bambanani Neighbourhood Watch members, and their treatment of spaza shops owned by foreigners. While many of the residents did not want to be named for fear of fur-

ther victimisation, Hassien Jacobs of the recently formed Roosendal Social Safety and Civil Rights Establishment, was outspoken in his criticism of their actions in the area. “The situation has got out of hand and the people are feeling helpless because the police refuse to act on their complaints,” he said. “While we support any actions in the community to fight crime the problem must not be with the ‘crime fighters’, when innocent people become their victims. “As an organisation in the area

we have received complaints from people who have been stopped as part of searches but then their cellphones and other belongings have been taken from them. “We have also received complaints from people where parties and braais on private property were just disrupted for no reason. This is not right because if people are entertaining themselves within the law they must be allowed to do it.” Another problem that residents in the area have been witnessing is that shop owners in the area are be-

ing threatened if they do not want to supply the neighbourhood watch with supplies. Cheslyn September who lives opposite one of these shops said that it was not right what they were doing. “All of these people are just trying to make a living,” he said. “Over recent weeks I have been watching how they just march into these shops and demand goods. Sometimes the shop is not even open and they bang on the container so that the shopkeeper must open for them. “Then you see them coming out

with the goods and it’s not just one or two things, it looks like they take stuff for all the members of the watch. “When I confronted them to tell them that what they were doing is wrong they started attacking and threatening me,” he said. Jacobs also added that while the neighbourhood watch members terrorised innocent members of the community the drug dens were allowed to operate freely. “They know who they can pick on,” he said. . Warning on epilepsy and driving A tragic accident in Elsies River has prompted warnings to epilepsy sufferers. Epilepsy South Africa would like to express their heartfelt condolences to the family of the driver – who apparently had epilepsy – who crashed his car into a primary school in Elsies River. (www.tygerburger.co.za article dated 20 January, Toddlers seriously injured in crash at school.) They also extend support to the families of the children injured during the accident, praying for their speedy recovery. Clearly, this is a matter that touched many people as evidenced by the 496 comments posted on the website relating to this accident. Getting a driver’s licence is a significant moment for any person; it represents freedom of movement and independence. However, it also represents the serious responsibility of practising road safety. As the only national organisation serving people with epilepsy, we recognise that if you have epilepsy, this responsibility is even

greater. Thus, you should make the decision about whether it is safe for you to drive after careful consideration of both your doctor’s advice and South African law. The law regarding driving and epilepsy differs quite considerably in different parts of the world. According to the South African National Road Traffic Act (Regulations 99 and 102, section 15) you are not permitted to drive if you have uncontrolled epilepsy. Apart from this, deciding whether you should drive or not is left to the individual concerned and his or her doctor. The decision is based on the type and severity of seizures, and the degree to which they are controlled. Studies have shown that people with uncontrolled seizures do have an increased risk of a car accident; people whose seizures are controlled, however, do not have a significantly increased risk. As a general rule a person with epilepsy should be seizure-free for two years before driving. Regular follow-up examinations by a neurologist are essential and compliance

with prescribed treatment and accurate reporting of seizures, a must. Even if your seizures are controlled and your doctor has given you the OK to drive, it’s important to always remember the following: . If you change or stop your medication suddenly, stop driving until your doctor advises you it’s safe to be on the road again; . If you have a seizure for the first time in years, stop driving and consult your doctor; . Don’t drive when you’re tired, stressed or ill, as you’re more likely to have a seizure at such times, and . Never drink and drive. If a person with epilepsy continues to drive while seizures are uncontrolled he/she will not be covered by insurance and will not only be committing a legal offence, but placing him/herself and other road users at risk. For further information and ideas on staying mobile and independent, contact your nearest branch of Epilepsy SA.

Cops confirm: ‘no one is above the law’ . From page 1. “You won’t find them doing their proper work of rooting out the drug dens, or checking up on the real criminal elements in the area. They think that can get away with their threats against law-abiding residents, but that is coming to an end.” Capt Joe Wilson, communications officer at Delft SAPS, said that they viewed these allegations very seriously and would be looking into the allegations.

“Our task and that of the NHW is to maintain law and order and in our endeavours we have to legally discipline members of the public against anti-social behaviour. “It is however so sad that they will resort to these means and then think that they are above the law, or that we will turn a blind eye. We will address any conduct unbecoming and will apply the law. “We are however not aware of complaints of this nature and we invite the

public to report to the station any conduct unbecoming on the part of Bambanani’s or police officials, after which we institute disciplinary steps. “The taking of cellphones is a criminal offence and we will deal with it accordingly. Please note that we are constantly policing shebeens and drug outlets and had searched 61 drug houses during January and arrested 192 suspects for the illegal possession of drugs.”

geword. “Die man het later begin huil, regtig gehuil. Die trane het by sy wange afgeloop. Dit het my so aangeraak!” Toe weet ek daar’s fout.”

With the new petrol increase of 34 cents per litre taking effect today, thousands of local commuters might feel the pinch in weeks to come. The petrol price now stands at R10.65 per litre for 95 Octane. The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco), last week called a meeting to discuss the impact of rising fuel prices on the industry, and fare increases might be inevitable – although not immediate – said Santaco spokesperson Vuyisile Mente. He said a decision on whether or not to hike fares would be taken in the coming weeks. Santaco said it feared hiking fares further may result in them losing customers. Meanwhile, local commuters who are already struggling to get to and from work, are worried as to how this decision might affect their daily lives. Liniwe Booi, who lives in Bloekombos and travels to the Kraaifontein taxi rank every day, is just one of many who will not be able to afford taxi fare after an increase. She currently pays R6 one way, which works out R12 a day and R252 per month, for the 10km route per day. The majority of taxi commuters out of Kraaifontein live in Bloekombos and Wallacedene. “I will have no other choice but to walk, if the fares go up again,” a despondent Booi told TygerBurger. Taxi owner Xolani Radebe feels an increase will be bad for business. “Commuters will look to other forms of transport such as trains and Golden Arrow buses, if we increase our fares for taxis,” he said. “All the taxi owners will have to meet and discuss all the factors involved before we

Chilli research at UCT The UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine is looking for volunteers for a new study at the end of February. The study is on the effects of chilli on metabolic function, and the aim is to measure how chilli affects metabolic rate, body temperature, blood glucose and insulin levels and the function of blood vessels. Volunteers will make three visits, the first to measure their glucose and insulin function, followed by two visits where the response to eating a meal with and without chilli will be measured. Those interested should be between 18 and 50 years old, be willing to eat chilli, not eat chilli on a regular basis, have no known medical condition requiring chronic medication, and be available on weekdays and weekends for testing. For more information on the study and to apply before the closing date on Friday 24 February contact Dr Jacolene Kroff on 021 650 4568.

even think of an increase,” he said. Gary Ronald, spokesperson for the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA), told TygerBurger this fuel hike was mainly based on current exchange rates, as the price of crude is stable. “We could see another increase at the end of February when the fuel levies are adjusted,” he added. Lindiwe Booi will have to walk to and from work, should the taxi fare increase. Photos: Desireé Rorke

Many daily taxi commuters in Kraaifontein will be affected if taxi fares increase after the latest fuel hike. The Cape Town Gem and Mineral Club will hold its first monthly open day of 2012 at its clubhouse in Goede Hoop Street in Bothasig on Saturday (4 February). There will be cut stones, crystals, minerals, natural stone beads, silver fittings, and ready-made jewellery available for purchase. Entrance is free to the public and the event runs from 10:00 to 15:00. For more information contact Marion on 084 6060 233.

All aboard the Blue Bus at Hindle High rived, and even though it has no wheels it has travelled into the hearts of people across South Africa. “This donation is part of our ongoing support of this project and as learners we want you to stay strong in your faith in what you want to make of your life,” he said. Principal Mario Jansen, said that he was very supportive of the project at the school because it was making a huge difference in the lives of the participants. “We come from an area where they are surrounded by negativity, and this programme shows them how they can shine despite their circumstances.” “The was really a huge flood of emotion when we saw the amount because we did not expect that but they can be assured that every cent will be used to empower our learners. Our learners must also be inspired by the fact that there are people out there who care about them and want them to succeed in life to make a difference in their communities,” he said.

GARY VAN DYK

The Blue Bus Project at Hindle High is celebrating starting the new year at the school. While the school is still gearing up to celebrate the new classrooms at the school, the new hall became the venue for celebration when two visitors were on hand to give them a cheque for R22 000 for the project at the school. Last year in November we covered the story of a group of men attending the Mighty Men conference in KwaZulu-Natal who sold boerewors rolls to raise money for the project in Delft (TygerBurger 9 November, Manne Braai vir Delftkinders). This donation was a result of their hard work. Dr Izanette van Schalkwyk, who heads the project at the school, pointed out that the Blue Bus project was there for learners who wanted to make a positive difference in their lives. The project’s activities include empowering learners at the school

“When we realised what you learners involved in the project wanted from your lives we knew that we had to be involved in supporting your quest. “We were here when the bus ar-

Rubble the real trouble GARY VAN DYK

The flames of a festive season fire may have died, but it is still causing problems for a Delft family. It has been more than a month since a fire from a neighour’s yard spread to the wendy house at the home of Shahieda Bendi in Rosendal Road, but she is still waiting on word about repairs to the house, and removal of the rubble that is causing problems for her family and surrounding houses. The incident happened on 23 December last year and Bendi does not know what to do about the problems that she is experiencing. “Assessors from the Council have been here on a number of occasions, but they don’t tell us anything,” she says. “While we are waiting to know about repairs the bigger problem is what to do about the rubble from the fire. “We approached our local ward

Tips to guard yourself against crime The police want residents to be more aware when it comes to crime. In recent weeks there has been an increase in incidents involving theft from vehicles and housebreaking. Prevention is better than cure so they want to equip you with preventative measures to reduce crime in your community. To avoid vehicle related crime: When you park your vehicle make sure that the doors and windows are closed and locked. Do not leave valuables like cell-

phones, laptops, handbags, money in your vehicle that are visible to opportunists. Put your valuables in the boot of your vehicle. Park your vehicle in a safe and secure place to minimise the risk of theft. Safety at home: When leaving your residence or going to sleep make sure all doors and windows are locked, including residences with double stories and balconies.

Inform the police, friends and neighbours when you are leaving your residence for a long period of time and leave a contact reference. A register will be completed at the police station. Inform the police of suspicious persons in your neighbourhood. In winter months the burglars are most active, if your hear any suspicious sounds call the police. Do not try to apprehend any suspects or burglars, but rather contact the police.

‘I believe we can win on NZ tour’ JESSICA BOTES

Dylon Meyer (18) from Kuils River is one of three indoor soccer players in the Western Cape who have been selected to represent South Africa on a tour to New Zealand. The young soccer star started his career at an early age playing soccer in the streets against the bigger kids. “At first I struggled and I couldn’t really play very well, but the more I played, the more I learned,” he says. According to Meyer, indoor soccer is a lot like normal soccer but you only have four players and it is played in an indoor sports court. Meyer and his fellow team mates will leave for New Zealand on 22 March. He ho- Dylon MeyerFoto: Jessica Botes pes that they will have some free time to explore the country as it is his first time overseas, but most of their time will be spent playing matches against teams from other countries. “We are a very positive team,” says Meyer, “and I believe that we will win.”

Major march says no to drug abuse GARY VAN DYK

Drug abuse among youth is becoming a bigger danger in communities. Recent research and surveys in the area by the Former Tik Addicts Reach Out (FTARO), and Mothers Against Drug Abuse (MADA) have revealed there is a lot more at stake if the problem is allowed to spiral out of control. “The issue of drug abuse among youths has become so worrying that if nothing urgent is done about it our future as a nation may be shattered,” says Dhakir Christians of the organisations. “The manifestation of the dangers of drug abuse among the youth is not far fetched as it can be clearly seen in the alarming rates of crime perpetrated by young people in all communities. “Unfortunately most of these problems begin at home because they are getting these bad habits from their domestic situations. “Whatever is done in the family, the child will most likely follow suit and this has the effect of posing greater problems that affect all those around them in their communities and at school. “In some cases this filters to the child who comes from a good home but is drawn to drug abuse through peer pressure. This breaks down the good foundations that there are in many homes and we have found that this trend has been increasing in recent years.” With these problems in mind the two organisations are planning a major anti-drug march in Belhar and would like to invite the community, interested organisations and schools of Belhar and the surrounding areas to participate in this awareness campaign. The proposed march will start at Belhar High in Suikerbossie Street, and end at the Reading Room in Chestnut Place. Renew gun licences Gun owners are reminded that gun licences must be renewed every year. The South African Police Service in the Western Cape would like to remind licensed firearm owners that during 2012 many licences issued in terms of the Firearm Controls Act (Act 60 of 2000) will expire, and need to be renewed. This process is not automatic, and a licensee will have to submit an application 90 days prior to the expiry date at his or her local police station in terms of the mentioned legislation. They would also like to encourage firearm owners to make an enquiry at their police station where an application was submitted, for issued licences, as these licenses are often left uncollected for many months. The ownership of a firearm is not only governed by national legislation, but is also a huge social responsibility and the police therefore appeal to all firearm owners to please take the necessary care in this regard.

While it has just announced that it is extending the deadline for entries for the Small Business Stars business plan competition, its services have helped an Elsies River couple empower themselves to financial stability. Last year Wendy and Oscar Samuels from Elsies River were unemployed with no prospects of jobs in their future. According to business adviser Dalton Randall of Seda service provider Devine Solutions, the couple decided to take personal responsibility in order to remedy their situation. “Although there were several alternative solutions such as government grants, these entrepreneurs decided to pursue their dream,” he says. “After trusting God and starting small they have now managed to sustain themselves over the last year with a mobile takeaway stand that operates in the area. “Through our guidance they have now received a subsidy from Seda in order to promote the business,” said Dalton. They have created two employment opportunities, doubled their turnover within a period of a month and also managed to give back to the community by supporting a feeding scheme in the area. “This is a remarkable achievement and a reflection that government is doing their utmost to alleviate poverty. “We encourage more people to make use of these services to make a positive difference in their lives if they are thinking of starting a small business,” he said.

With this success story in mind the deadline for entries for the business plan competition has been extended to 29 February, which offers aspirant and existing entrepreneurs an opportunity to make their entrepreneurial dreams a reality. Koenie Slabbert, COO of Seda said that although interest has been beyond expectations with several thousand entrants registering, many have indicated they require more time for thorough market research and to do more work on their financial projections. Participants can enter any kind of business idea or an existing business in any industry. More than R4 million worth of cash and business support prizes await the 40 winners. Once the entries have been judged after the closing date, up to 300 finalists from around the country will be selected to present their business idea in person to provincial panels. From there, the 40 national winners will be selected. There are four special award categories for the Best Woman Entrepreneur, Best Entrepreneur with a Disability, Best Youth Entrepreneur and Best Job-Creating Entrepreneur. Printed entry forms are also available from any Seda or National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) branch, for those without computer access. “Even if participants aren’t selected as finalists or winners, they are able to walk away with an actual business plan.” To enter the competition, or for more information about specific dates and venues for the provincial workshops, visit www.sedastars.org.za or follow Seda Small Business Stars on Twitter or Facebook.

Crime gets the boot in street soccer Street soccer is giving crime the boot in Delft. Freddie Strauss, the chairperson of the Leiden Community Youth, a community based organisation providing youth development programmes in Leiden says that he is very delighted regarding the positive impact the organisation’s street soccer programme is having on the youth of Delft. According to Strauss, the Leiden Community Youth has formed a partnership with the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture to promote the street soccer concept, as an alternative to crime and drugs. “We started this year’s programme on Saturday 21 January at the Central Sportsgrounds,” he says. “In all, some 128 individuals participated in the day’s

programme which was well attended by the public, to support the youth.” Strauss added that his organisation had received overwhelming support from the public, for the programmes they present in support of the youth. Beside the street soccer programme the organisation focuses on youth development, drug abuse and violence against women and children. He further extended his appreciation to the state department and other community based organisations for their support towards the programme and committed themselves to working even harder this year. For more information about their projects Strauss can be contacted on 073 044 9261.

Toe gee die see haar ’n geskenk.

World Wetlands Day will be cele brated at wetland areas all over Cape Town, such as Intaka Island at Century City.

Big YES to Wetlands Day In celebration of World Wetlands Day tomorrow (Thursday), the City of Cape Town will be hosting various wetland education programmes as part of its Youth Environmental School (YES) programme. To date, the city has set aside over 30 areas within the metro boundary to be managed as nature reserves, many of which support wetlands. These reserves include Milnerton’s Table Bay Nature Reserve and the Tygerberg Nature Reserve. Programmes will also be hosted at wetland areas outside these reserves, such as Intaka Island at

Century City from 09:00 to 13:00. Contact Paul Arends on 021 487 2567 for more information on the Intaka Island programme. Finally, displays will be set up for the general public at the Milnerton and Brooklyn/Rugby libraries during the month. The theme for 2012 is “Wetlands and Tourism”, which emphasises that responsible tourism supports wetlands and people. Tourism can have both positive and negative impacts on wetlands, and also on Cape Town’s unique and irreplaceable biodiversity. World Wetlands Day is a time to highlight wetlands as great plac-

es to visit, but to also stress the need for care and respect of wetland environments. The YES programme activities will all revolve around environmental education, wetlands and nature reserves and the YES team will involve over 2 000 learners from Cape Town. Programmes will feature activities such as purification experiments, water droplet pledges and analysis of wetland samples, and are aligned to the curriculum. For more information visit www.capetown.gov.za/naturereserves or www.capetown.gov.za/ youthenvironmentalschool.

The Absa Life Xtreme’s Ultimate X 2012 Festival is coming to town.

Ultimate in Xtreme sport at the Waterfront Cape Town will be hosting the country’s largest extreme sports lifestyle event – the Absa Life Xtreme’s Ultimate X 2012 festival – on Saturday 18 February. The Gateway Canal at the V&A Waterfront will be transformed into an extreme sporting paradise with death-defying stunts and dare-devil twists performed by the kings and queens of extreme BMX, FMX, skate and wake boarding in South Africa. The event (now in its third year) expects over 5 000 extreme sportsloving spectators to attend the daylong festival in the Mother City. Gates open at 11:00 and close at 19:00, followed by an extreme concert at Zula Lounge in Long Street with top local DJs and bands playing into the night. Mike Silver of experiential marketing partner Stretch, says this year’s festival will be bigger and better than ever: “The adrenalinefuelled spectators can expect to experience top international and local athletes competing on some of the largest ride infrastructure ever seen in South Africa at the ultimate

outdoor venue in Cape Town with views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean.” Twenty-three of the country’s best riders in each discipline will compete for a share in the R80 000 of cash prizes and the title of Absa Ultimate X Gold 2012 South African champion. Also, as part of Absa’s efforts to take action sports to the masses, the sponsor will be staging an extreme experience for revellers on the day. Spectators can relax on the two 25 metre decks by the canal that feature day-beds, bean bags, cocktail tables and sofas all under a huge shaded tent. XBox 360 games will also be made available for the public. Pre-bought tickets from Computicket cost R80 plus a R10 booking fee for adults. Free call for city query The first free-call telephone device in an informal settlement has been installed in Fisantekraal. This pilot project enables residents to contact the City of Cape Town with their municipal accounts and service-related queries. This follows the installation of a total of 50 free-call lines in city facilities, including libraries and municipal offices to improve communication with residents. The project is the next phase of the city’s free-call services for a new 24-hour free-call line to improve service delivery, specifically for use in informal settlements. At the launch of this pilot project last week, executive mayor of Cape Town, Patricia de Lille said five more free call lines will be installed

in other informal settlements “once we have reviewed the effectiveness of system”. The call centre receives on average 83 000 calls per month, she said. “This administration is fully committed to building a caring city for all Capetonians. For us to realise this, we must constantly explore ways to provide the best possible level of service to all communities, most especially to the poor. “In order to ensure that we provide quality services and to ensure that we are responsive to citizens’ needs, the city has a number of communication channels available to residents to lodge their complaints,” she said. The telephone device will be placed in a central and secure location to ensure that it is easily accessible to the rest of the community.

Amoré gewild in Kaap LOUISA STEYL

“Ek was 12 jaar oud toe ek vir die eerste keer op die verhoog was,” sê die plaaslike sangeres Amoré Rudman. Amoré het al ver gekom van daardie tyd af. Sy is in 2012 deur Bok Radio aangewys as die Kaap se gewildste kunstenaar vir haar liedjie “Lekker by die see”. “Ek leer so baie van hul-

Vir meer inligting oor Amoré, besoek haar webtuiste by www.amore.co.za.

Road race to honour ‘Ballie’ Ravensmead Athletic Club is still running strong and looking for more members to join. This afternoon they will be hosting the second annual Jacobus “Ballie” Bruintjies memorial 10km race through the streets of Parow and Ravensmead. Bruintjies was involved in sport for almost all his life. He was a keen soccer player for Ravensmead and Stonehill Soccer clubs in his youth. In the mid-nineties he became involved in Ravensmead Athletic Club as an athlete and board member, where he was well-known and respected in the sport. He later became chairman of the club, a position he held for many years. He was also a Western Province Athletics board member for several years, where he represented WPA at ASA meetings and events. Starting at 18:15 the race is run in memory of one of the best athletes and administrators that served the club. Registration will take place from 16:30 at the Florida Park Sportsground, and entry fee is R30 for licensed, and R45 for unlicensed participants. Social walkers are also welcome to take part and all finishers receive medals. Safe parking and security is provided at Florida Park Sportsground and Pinedene Primary School. To avoid traffic congestion, runners are advised to car-pool and arrive early.

Jacobus ‘Ballie’ Bruintjies, will be re membered in a road race in Raven smead today. Refreshments will be also on sale. The support of Peninsula Beverages, Newman’s Glass Solutions, Tygerberg Veterans Sports Club, and the City of Cape Town is greatly appreciated. For more information, contact Martin on 084 586 8280 or Abram 082 323 5828. . Ravensmead Athletic Club turned 30 last year and over the years, the club has produced topclass athletes in the Tygerberg district. The club is also looking for interested experienced coaches and mentors to assist with development. If interested, call Harold 084 500 6081 (membership) or Fundiswa 073 526 1120 (development).

Nonracial sport in W Cape MARK WARD

The state of non-racialism and development in Western Cape sport will be the subject of an independently hosted symposium. Cheryl Roberts, a respected sports activist who in recent years has actively campaigned for female participation in sport, will host the event in conjunction with the Sport and Recreation Council of the City of Cape Town. The former table tennis star, who participated at Olympic level, said the reason for the hosting of the seminar is the slow pace of transformation in South African sport in general. “This is a platform to engage in dialogue and conversation about our guiding principle, which is of course non-racialism in sport,” said Roberts.

“It will focus on, and try to thrash out, what we should know and implement when we talk about development and developing sport.” The event will take place on Saturday 4 January from 09:00 at the Athlone Stadium. According to Roberts, the symposium is independently hosted. It is open to all, especially officials and administrators at provincial level, leaders of sports councils, district associations, club and community sports structures, coaches and selectors, tertiary education sports officials and government officials. “We need many minds to be exposed to non-racialism in sport. Twenty years after sports unification, following decades of antiapartheid sport struggle, we have been catapulted into an era of money and professional sport, with

Morris on loan to Santos THOMAS CAROLUS

Engen Santos has comfirmed the rumours surrounding Bafana central defender, Nasief Morris who will be joining the Landsdowne based club for the remainder of the season. Goolam Allie, the Santos chairman, confirmed that the former Racing Santander defender has joined “The People’s Team’’. “The deal for Morris is done, it’s a loan deal for six months,” said Allie. After having displayed a poor de-

fence for the opening half of the season, Santos will look forward to Morris returning them to their glory days of being a defensive stronghold. Morris is the second big name to join the ranks of the team during the January window period, following the confirmation of former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker Gert Schalkwyk. In an attempt to clear up speculations regarding the coaching staff. Allie has made it clear that he is no way rushing to make a change for the sake of making a change.

His beliefs draw from the fact that Engen Santos has assembled their strongest squad for a number of years. As it stands, Duncan Crowie will continue to hold the reigns with Boebie Solomons still maintaining his position on the technical team. This announcement does not spell out the end for current head coach Solomons, in fact he was part of the decision to bring Crowie to the forefront, indicating the team needs rejuvenating. “We reached a point where we had to do something,” said Solomons.

class, colour and gender imbalances,” said Roberts. “Development is vital for every sport if they are to survive into the future, but participation has, over this period, dwindled. “I don’t think the emphasis should be on elite participation but on building the foundation of sport, in conjunction with local government and sports federations. “By implementing development programmes, we must work from a non-racial perspective.” Additionally, all delegates attending the symposium will receive a copy of Roberts’ book titled No Normal Sport In An Abnormal Society– Struggle For Non-Racial Sport in South Africa: From Apartheid To Sports Unity. New life for Hellenic FC name will help to attract these talented youngsters to Milnerton. Veitch says that he and Byrne also hope to rebuild the Hellenic brand to its former glory. “The name will attract a lot of attention and we then have to live up to that expectation. It’s very important that this name is looked after, to the best of our ability,” said Veitch. “And our aspirations are to get Hellenic to where it was all those years ago, up into the PSL. It’s a very long-term project, but at the same time it’s something that we are doing as a 10 to 15 year programme.” Hellenic have three coaches for each one of the three teams currently at the club, as well as a dedicated goalkeeping coach and a biokineticist. The size of the coaching staff is much larger than most teams of Hellenic’s size, but it is the quality of the individuals which is even more surprising. Byrne himself is the former head of development at Udinese, while respective u-17and u-13 coaches Neven Payne and Cecil Ntlebi held the same positions at the original team before it closed down. Veitch said that three of the coaching staff are Union of European Football Association (UEFA) accredited and one has the highest level of South African Football Association (SAFA) coaching certificate. According to Byrne, the high number of staff members will help the club to develop the players technically, mentally and physically. “Our programme is to develop the individual holistically,” said Byrne.

Former Premier Soccer League team Hellenic have reformed almost eight years after closing down when their Premier League franchise was sold to Benoni Premier United. The team, which is now based in Milnerton, started training in November last year and will field three teams in the Super League of the Cape Town Tygerberg Football Association. According to Grant Veitch, operations manager at Hellenic, the club was restarted after he and Mark Byrne, former Hellenic player and coach, and the current director of football, approached the Hajidakis family to purchase the naming rights. The Hellenic name was then superimposed on to Blouberg City Football Club, and a large contingent of staff set up shop at the team’s Tygerhof base. Veitch says developing Cape Town’s abundant football talent will be the main aim of the team for the immediate future. “We think there is something missing in Cape Town football at the moment. There are certain clubs and academies around that say they are the benchmark for youth development,” said Veitch. “We believe that the benchmark should be at another level, which we think we can offer.” The club will function primarily as a football academy, hoping to develop players that they can sell on to professional sides for a profit, and Veitch hopes that the Hellenic
