Heavy storms lash Cape Town Heavy rains lashed the Western Cape last week but there may be some respite from the wintry weather for the rest of the week. In Elsies River, Steve Ross of the Riverton Estate Residents’ Association took some time to see the canal in the area almost overflowing. uspended chairperson of the Western Cape Community Police Board, Hanif Loonat, is calling for clarity on his suspension now entering its seventh week. At a press conference held last week he appealed to the office of the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner for an urgent resolution to the matter in the interest of fighting crime in the community. “I am concerned at what is happening in the provincial board and need them to provide me, and my attorney Michael Bagraim, with the necessary documents relating to the charges of my suspension and to provide me with an opportunity to appeal my suspension as per the requirements of the Con-

stitution of the Western Cape Community Police Board,” he said. Loonat went on to explain that even though he is yet to receive these documents relating to charges against him it may be related to discussion around the terms of office which started in 2010. “During 2010 - 2012 the Provincial Community Police Board had several meetings with our structures and the Provincial Board to deal with the issue of the extension of the Term of Office of its structures from two years to five years.

the Provincial Board, the WC SAPS legal representatives and the WC Department of Community Safety, in September 2012, it was agreed that the Provincial Board together with the SAPS legal team will draft a document explaining the Terms of Office to our structures. “This document was drafted and as agreed in the meeting was to be signed by the WC SAPS, the HOD of the Western Cape Department of Community Safety, as well as the Provincial Board chairperson and then to be disseminated to all our structures. “This never materialised and the apparent reluctance by Deputy Police Commissioner Maj Gen Peter Jacobs, to do so frustrated the board as well as the legal representatives of SAPS.

dents came voluntarily to complain about their living circumstances. The 34-year-old Vanisthwa Whabe, struggled through the muddy roads that run through the area and complained about the bitter cold. “Its affecting the health of my children,” she said as she carried her one-year-old daughter on her back and led her 4-year-old son by the hand. “These houses are made of asbestos and they are not good to live in. “You can see the holes here in my house and some of these walls are ready to break down because of the rain, which just comes in and floods our houses.” Another resident, Joyce Kelle, living with her 64-year-old mother also complained about the conditions in the area as she pointed out how they had to scoop water out of their house and the wet pools they have to walk through when moving around in the area. According to Wilson, their concern is with the environmental design as the area has no proper streets and are flooded during heavy rain. “The way that the authorities designed this area makes service to the community very difficult. “It also impacts negatively on our vehicles because to make the water flow away from their structures, the residents made big holes in the pathways and streets.” Tsunami started out as a temporary relocation area from 2005 and the residents were promised that they would stay there for five years, the but they are still living under the VAN DYK same conditions.

YOUR STORIES on www.tygerburger.co.za EK IS ’N TYGERBURGER Nikki Pretorius

Devastation in Skandaalkamp

Skandaalkamp is one of four “bush” settlements on the dumpsite just outside of Table View. Over 260 families call it home. They have one portable toilet and one tap for every six families. There is no electricity available to residents. They rely on fire to cook and structures are built from whatever materials they can scavenge off the dumpsite. There are no roads, no jobs nearby, no public transport. They are on the doorstep of one of our major cities but they may as well be in the middle of Ethiopia. Their living conditions are desperate on a normal, sunshine day! With all the rain we have had in Cape Town in the last few days, it has become downright dangerous to be a resident here. Most shacks have no windows and roofs are mainly constructed from wooden beams and years of layers of plastic sheeting. Mould and damp have taken its toll on the shelters as well as the health of the occupants. Shelters are full of rot and moss grows on the wooden beams that are the support for the roofs. One of the residents is disabled. He relies on crutches for mobility, but his roof is held up by planks placed under the roof beams to keep them from collapsing. Water drips into buckets placed throughout his “home”.

It drips on his bed while he sleeps at night. His floor may not be under water, but everything he owns is damp. He has plastered his walls with cardboard as insulation from the cold. Cardboard fills the gap where normal homes would have glass windows. He is not alone, over 260 families live this way – in one settlement alone. There are three more settlements on the same dumpsite in very similar conditions. The people living here are good people, they have beautiful children with hopes of making something of themselves when they grow up one day, like a fireman, a policeman, a teacher – humble dreams for humble children. Working with these children has been the high point of my existence, they have repaid me tenfold in love! Seeing their little faces beam when they get a sandwich, a kiss, a hug or a second-hand item of clothing is what fuels my batteries to do more. Whopping 1 520 abalone confiscated Police in Belhar have made an important perlemoen bust in the area. On Sunday 11 August at about 18:00 Belhar police under the command of Sgt Riyan Karriem received information from a reliable source of the illegal trade in abalone in the area. They followed up this information and searched a house in Harrington Street and re-

covered one bag of abalone. An hour later, at another house in Amsterdam Road they recovered another 10 bags, and another four bags hidden in the boot of a car on the premises. Three suspects, a female and two men were arrested. A whopping total of 1 520 abalone were seized and the estimated value was still to be determined.

Special treats keep the Mandela Day spirit alive GARY VAN DYK

These are the mighty men who attended the camp to make a change in their communities.

Mighty Men rise up to change communities GARY VAN DYK Some mighty men are motivated to make a difference in their communities. The Bonteheuwel Men in Action recently had a Men’s Camp at the picturesque Simonsberg Christian Centre just outside Stellenbosch, and they’re motivated to inspire more men to join them in making positive changes in their neighbourhoods. One of the organisers, Theodore Motto, said that the camp is held annually under the banner of the Bonteheuwel Churches in Action. “We want to make that difference in all communities so this camp was attended by men from different churches and different areas including Bonteheuwel, Montana, Delft, Belhar, Goodwood and Mitchells Plain,” he said. “At the camp members were treated to hearty meals, comfortable beds, refreshing showers, games, uplifting fellowship, inspiring talks and engaging discussions regarding men, their role and responsibility in society and the challenges of everyday life they have to face.” Motto added that the theme of the camp was, Men Rise Up, and it included a concert by all the attendants. “A special feature of this year’s camp is that some of the men attended with their sons which opened up opportunities for

bonding, rejuvenated relationships and passing on the baton to become a positive part of their communities. “The camp ended with a joyful and emotional parting as the men went their respective ways with a renewed energy and sense of purpose for positive responsible living.” Another motivated attendant was Dave Solomons, who feels that this camp was the start of powerful changes that real men were going to make in the community. “We are tired of all the crime, drugs and gangsterism destroying our lives,” he said. “At this camp we realised that as men we must make our voices heard for change in our communities. The churches must also play a bigger role in becoming part of that change by tackling the problems that our youth are facing head-on, and when the problems start surfacing. “The men in our neighbourhoods must also realise that they have an important part to play in these changes. We must reach out to all these men, and motivate them to become part of that change.” Bonteheuwel Men in Action meets every Monday at 19:00 and welcomes all men who want to be part of the change to join them. V For more information on next year’s camp and these organisations contact Paul August on 078 880 8772, email, pmba@telkomsa.net or Neville Haupt on 083 768 0504 or call 021 694 2476 during office hours.

WINTER 2 WEEKS ONLY!

A local petrol station is playing its part in keeping the Mandela spirit of giving alive in the community. Pieter de Gouveia, director of BP Osman in Clarke Estate and BP Airport, said that these two stations wanted to play their part in doing something for their communities even beyond Mandela Month which was celebrated in July. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Nelson Mandela and his family and while we long for his recovery, we trust in God’s compassion, mercy and goodness for his wellbeing,” he said. “During July in honour of his birthday, each person is asked to celebrate this long road to freedom with 67 minutes of community service. “Ultimately these individual actions seek to empower communities to take action, inspire change, but we seek to make every day a Mandela Day.” Their contribution recently started when staff at the two stations, with Izani Pretorius of BP Southern Africa, met at

the Mac Adams Test Kitchen in Blackheath and began a marathon bake-off of 1 000 chelsea twists donated by Tribake. Sausage rolls were also donated by Piemans who baked a further 550 pies at their facility. “The delicious goodies from all three sites were eventually ready for distribution by midday and transported, in the delivery van donated for the day by African Cellar Suppliers, to Edward Primary in Elsies River, one of the beneficiaries of our Mandela 67 outreach programme,” continued DE Gouveia. “Each child and staff member at the school received a gift donated by BP Head office, a sausage roll, a chelsea twist and cup of Coca Cola. “A cheque of R5 500 from BP Osman was also handed to the principal and I encouraged the children to spend their time helping someone needy in their community. “The balance of the baking was shared between Baphumelele children’s home, an orphanage in Khayelitsha and Linawo children’s home in Pinelands.”

Support kids with Down syndrome The Down Syndrome Association Western Cape (DSAWC) will hold a golf day at Parow Golf Club on Friday 11 October. This day is one of their major fundraising events of the year. Tineke Boshoff, liaison officer for DSAWC, says they need the support of the business sector and friends to make this day successful. Players who enter a fourball and sponsor a hole receive a discount of R250. Down syndrome is the most frequent of all chromosomal abnormalities. This purely random occurrence takes place at conception. There is a high variance of how it manifests itself, both physically and mentally.

Taking into consideration that approximately one in every 900 babies in South Africa is born with Down Syndrome, it is something that affects each one of us. DSAWC encourages people with Down syndrome to develop to their full potential, using their skills and abilities to contribute to their communities. Competition boosts reading GARY VAN DYK Ravensmead Library is working on motivating more young readers in the area, and the challenge is being taken up by a local primary school. While they already have an annual District Reading Competition for Grade 7 learners from a number of schools in the area, one of those schools has now started an inhouse competition to encourage learners of all ages to get into the habit of enjoying books. Webner Primary participated in 2012 and again this year, and they were very happy with the results. “They have now started their own competition and had the first round for Grades 1 to 3 last week,” says Bronwen Mogapi of the library. “They were so pleased with this initiative of Ravensmead Library and participating schools coming together to motivate our

children to read and have fun, they decided to have their own In-House Reading Competition. “The major difference is that they have started with all grades to motivate, help and prepare their children for future district library reading competitions and generally assisting their children to enhance a reading culture.” The school will be hosting the second part of their competition today and the excitement is running high. “We are very happy with this initiative,” continued Mogapi. “Our hope is that the other participating schools get on board and maybe start their own In-school or In-House reading competition for their own students or learners, setting a platform in advance for the Ravensmead Library Annual Reading Competition. We, as library staff are passionate about wanting all children to develop a real love of books and of reading pleasure.”

Nog net so blond, nog net so plastiek as tydens haar verhoor sowat drie jaar gelede.

By voorbaat dank. SENIOR BURGER Parow

Vagrants go to drug house not church It was with interest that I read the article regarding the problem the resident is having with the parking area at the Lighthouse Church. (“Church blamed for criminal acts, TygerBurger, 14 August). I find it strange that the same complainant did not mention that in very close proximity to where she is located there also is a known drug house. No complaint regarding this place, madam? I assume that is acceptable to you, regardless of the fact

that the bad elements hanging around there more than likely frequent this place? The lady is fortunate not to be living in Parow West, like I do, just a street away from what is known as the local drug house/brothel and is located next to the municipal parking area where they don’t even do “it” in the car but out in the open. The majority of us living close by and who use our feet as a mode of transport rather use the next street than walk down the one where this place is located. Talk about weird things going on in a parking area, which also has had its fair share of rubbish being dumped there. It is getting to the point where the “For Sale” signs are mushrooming. Then of course there is the alleyway between Parow Post Office and the pharmacy where all sorts of weird things occur. I’m curious to know if she would want the municipality to fence in the whole parking area running behind the shops in Parow to prevent the vagrants, scoundrels, drug runners, pimps and prostitutes from plying their trade. AW Parow

Train pulls off with half of us stranded On the rainy overcast morning of 6 August, an elderly group of people (between 60 and 80 years) were excitedly awaiting the train at Oostersee station to transport them to Cape Town and then on to Newlands for a tour of SA Breweries. The train duly arrived at 10:20 and stopped allowing a few seconds for passengers to embark. The doors promptly shut and proceeded to exit the station leaving more than half of us stranded. After the onboard security banged on the panel that separates driver from first coach passengers and much

waving from station security the train did stop again for the rest of our group to hop into the last coach. The driver managed to give us the slip at the end of our journey to avoid a tongue lashing from some of the more irate amongst us. I hate to think what would happened if a young mother was putting her young infant (in a pushchair) on the train and was about to help her other older child onboard when the driver pulls the same stunt leaving mother and child stranded. Here’s hoping our next trip from Oostersee station will be more pleasant. CYNTHIA Email Riana Scott, Metro Rail spokesperson: It appears that the reader’s group made use of Metrorail’s concession for pensioners i.e. ‘free Tuesdays’ when pensioners may travel to any Metrorail station on its rail network. This is in addition to the normal pensioners’ concession of 40% during weekdays. Pensioners should buy their tickets in person at the ticket office and present their ID documents. Senior citizens of 60 years and older receive 40% discount for both Metro Plus or Metro on single and return tickets between 09:00 to 14:00. Pensioners travelling during peak hours will however pay full fare. Regional manager of Metrorail Western Cape, Mthuthuzeli Swartz, thanked the reader for bringing this incident to his attention: “We welcome concerns from train users as these assist us to constantly improve our service levels.” He said his Customer Services team were alerted to be mindful of groups travelling during off-peak to prevent a recurrence. He also encouraged pensioners to familiarise themselves with the Customer Services Manager for their service corridor: “I encourage them to alert the manager prior to their planned excursions so that he can render any assistance required”.

Solo acts collide in action romp The Heat, starring Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock, opens at Ster-Kinekor Bayside, N1 City, Parow and Tyger Valley on Friday. In this action comedy, uptight FBI special agent Sarah Ashburn is paired with testy Boston cop Shannon Mullins in order to take down a ruthless drug lord. The hitch: neither woman has ever had a partner...or a friend.

“Ek is baie trots daarop,” sê hy. “My musiekloopbaan het seker amptelik begin toe ek so 14 was, maar ek sing al van kleins af,” sê Munro.

Vir Munro is ’n nuwe album altyd ’n hoogtepunt. “So ’n CD is altyd groot en hierdie een, Goeie Dae, is my hoogtepunt,” sê Munro. Few matches left to clinch the title THOMAS CAROLUS

S

alberau Park will come alive on Saturday afternoon when Central AFC host current log leaders Bellstar United in a crucial Super League battle of the Northern Suburbs Football Association. The clash is touted as one of Bellstar United’s most important matches this season, with only a few matches left to clinch the title. History favours Bellstar United to do well, but current form tells a different story for the side from Salberau who have been struggling to move from the fourth spot on the log.

Top spot Bellstar United are placed 1st on the table with 45 points from 20 matches, while Central AFC are fourth with 35 points. Central coach, James Julies is however adamant that his players will achieve the planned top spot finish, come the end of the

season but says his side will have to dig deep against Bellstar United, if they are to get a good result. “Bellstar United are a very good side, which means we have to really dig deep if we are to get a good result against them. “We have been very unlucky to concede soft goals in our last few matches that ended up with us on the losing side or drawing. “We know that Bellstar United will be tough to beat but for us there’s a lot more at stake and this match is a must-win affair for us. “We have to take our chances against them because I know that they will punish us if they get the chance. “Our problem is that the players seem to switch off immediately after scoring a goal, and that has seen us give away easy goals to the opposition at very crucial times. “We have been working really hard on our mistakes and hope we don’t see a repeat in our upcoming matches.’’

Julies has also warned his side to be precise, especially when dealing with the long balls, which will be pumped into the Central AFC box by the pacy Bellstar United wingers, a tactic, he says, most teams have been victims of.

Fast “Apart from us scoring upfront, we also have to be at our best at the back and not give them enough room to try any of their trademark moves. “They have fast wingers and always have a tall man in the box which means we have to close them down very quickly if we want to neutralise their attacks. “We are playing against a team who are the current log leaders which does not make it any easier for us because they are also a good side who didn’t get where they are by mistake. “They have a very good balance of talented youngsters and experience, which makes

them a bit tricky, but we have done our homework and that should see us through. Even though admitting that it will not be easy, Julies believes that good preparations and determination should see Central AFC walk away with three points and guarantee a top four place. “I would like to urge our supporters to come out in numbers and support their team as we aim to finish the season in style,” he says. “On Saturday we will play with pride and integrity , especially for the supporters who have been our pillar of strength through thick and thin.’’ “When I said that we could go on and win all our remaining games, some people might have thought that I was speaking out of emotion or arrogance, but that was not the case at all. “I believe in my players and I know that they have the courage to prove that we have what it takes.”

Lights by Linea Pro Crit Night Series is an exciting evening cycle race around some of the main streets of Stellenbosch on Saturday. This event subscribes to the worldwide trend of “criterium” formats, where riders, usually the best amateurs and professionals around, race around streets, on a completely closed route, protected by safety officers and traffic officials. Wayne Roberts, on behalf of the event, himself an everyday veteran cyclist, considers this style of event as lacking exposure, since people have grown accustomed to longer distances, and mountain biking, especially with the decline of road safety for riders and the loss of traditional stage races.

This form of racing is a massive spectator sport as the athletes are in contact with the crowds every few minutes and as the circuit is a street course, the cornering is fast and furious with huge appeal to all ages of cyclists. Average heart rate for an event like this is anywhere between 175-205bpm and a specialised conditioning programme is required to prepare the cyclists. Activities will commence around 17:30 on Plein Street in historic Stellenbosch. This weekend sees another race at the Polkadraai Farm Stall on the M12 between Kuils River and Stellenbosch, commencing at 12:00 for youngsters under the age of 16, 13:00 for veterans, and 14:00 for the professionals.

The IFBB Western Province Provincial Bodybuilding Championships are sure to attract the very best bodies in the province this Saturday to battle it out for a spot in the provincial team. Western Province will announce its team on Saturday night for the South African National Championships to be held in Port Elizabeth from 5 to 7 September. Bodybuilding has seen tremendous growth in the last year in the province and the numbers are backing this up. In comparison with previous years, the number of athletes entering shows has more than doubled. Bellville resident and chairperson of IFBB Western Province, Kevin Schwartz, has made a massive impact in growing the sport and attracting new sponsors to this non profit organisation. “Bodybuilding is my passion in life, and everything I and my committee members do is for the athletes. We have moved to a bigger and better venue, upgrading our lights for the stage – and proper food stalls all add to the experience on the day for the athletes and their family and friends. “I am very excited about Saturday and I’m sure we will pick a very strong team to travel to Port Elizabeth,” he added. The Show will be held at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. Athletes weigh in from 08:00 to 10:00, pre-judging begins at 11:00 and the main show at 18:00. Pre-judging spectators pay R60 and for the main show R100. Athletes affiliation and division entry is R100 respectively. Go to www.ifbbwp.co.za for more.

Battle call for bodybuilding champs of the Cape Province

LIAM MOSES

Skills Saulmann adds that his side’s biggest strengths are their “skilful midfield”, pacy attack and reliable goalkeeping. United FC are one of three Bishop Lavis based sides that will play in the Knockout Challenge, of which People’s Post is the tournament’s print media sponsor, along with Island Rovers and Bishop Lavis FC. Saulmann’s young side will join Group D, where rivals Bishop Lavis, tournament favourites ASD Academy and Atlantic Nacional await. United will face Lavis in their opening game at 19:20 on Friday and Saulmann says the local rivalry adds an extra dimension. The Engen Knockout Challenge will take place from Friday 23 till Sunday 25 August at the William Herbert Sports Complex.

ENGEN KNOCKOUT: UNITED REPLACE CHIPPA

nited FC are raring to go after replacing Chippa United in the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge. The Bishop Lavis side were announced as Chippa’s replacement on Wednesday 14 August and club chairman Winston Saulmann says they are ready to do battle despite the short notice. “We have been training throughout, as our under-17s are in the last 16 of the CocaCola Cup. We are well prepared for the tournament,” he says. “If we can reach the semi-finals it will be good. Just to qualify from the group stages will be a bonus, because it’s not every day that we play against the likes of Santos, Ajax and ASD Academy. “With the team we have, we are hoping to qualify for the group stages. After that it’s (the) knockout (phase), so it can be anybody’s day.”
