TygerBurger se uitblinkers by Sanlam se MDDAtoekenningsaand vir plaaslike media, is (van links) André Bakkes, Laila Majiet (People’s Post), Marana Brand van Hulsteyn (nuusredakteur), Fergus Sampson (uitvoerende hoof: Media24 Nuus), Michelle Linnert, Desireé Rorke, Ishmet Davidson (hoof: Media24 Plaaslike Nuus), Marita Meyer (uitgewer: WP Media) en Carina Roux.

MEDIATOEKENNINGS: TYGERBURGERUITGAWES TROON UIT

Ses onder die toptien! ’n

In

Following the shortfall in the supply of polio and measles vaccines last month, the provincial government has announced that measles vaccines are back in stock. The oral polio vaccine (OPV) stock will be available at clinics again at the end of June. “The short supply of vaccines is not a Western Cape problem, but one that is experienced by all provinces. The supply problem has its origins at the Biovac Institute, which is the supplier of vaccines to the National Department of Health,” health MEC Theuns Botha. “In the interim, we are managing the available polio stock to reduce the impact as far as possible. The City of Cape Town and Cape Winelands District have distributed their available stock to other provincial facilities with stock shortages,” said Botha. He said patients should contact their local healthcare facilities to enquire about the availability of polio vaccines. Should stock not be available immediately, caregivers are urged to ensure that the child is immunized as soon as supplies return back to normal. Botha’s spokesperson, Helene Rossouw, said it is important that should the OPV not be available for a six week old baby, the child should still receive the other vaccines against diptheria, whooping cough and tetanus and the Hib vaccine against Haemophilus influenzae type b. “If they do not receive the polio drops at six weeks, they can catch up the dose when they go for their 10 weeks immunisations, when stock will be available again. They will not be at any risk,” De Kock says. Some private baby clinics have stock, but patients have to pay a consultation fee.

Forge your business skills The City of Cape Town is calling on all young entrepreneurs to apply for a place at the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial Development by Friday 30 May 2013. The city urges aspiring entrepreneurs aged between 18 and 30 to apply to the academy for an opportunity to be part of the July 2014 class. “The city is thrilled to once again partner with this respected academy which provides young people with key opportunities that will improve their business and life skills. Partnerships such as these are vital to realising the city’s commitment to fostering economic development and entrepreneurship, especially amongst the youth,” said the mayoral committee member for economic, environmental and spatial planning, Johan van der Merwe. The 2014 alumni survey showed that 86% of graduates from the Raymond Ackerman Academy of Entrepreneurial De-

velopment are working, studying or have their own business. Some graduates have also won awards and had success in entrepreneurship competitions. Past graduates have said the course opened their mind to a broader picture of life and developed them as individuals equipped to pursue their purpose, push their boundaries and, most importantly, to go out and put their ideas into action. “The programme not only gives young people a start, but it also provides continued support and motivation to graduates who go on to become entrepreneurs. In this way we provide an opportunity and the youth have a chance to make the most if it,” said van der Merwe. “The city is impressed with the results that the academy and the graduates have achieved thus far,” he said. V Applicants can apply by visiting www.ackerma nacademy.co.za or calling 021 406 1422.

This race is one of the major road events in the country,” said UWC spokesperson Aidan van den Heever.

He said the race caters for athletes of all ages and takes place the day before the Comrades Marathon. “Some even use it to prepare for the Comrades, on 1 June this year.” The event is well-supported by athletic clubs across the country, he said, and “has become quite popular among local athletes in and around Cape Town.” Registration takes place at the UWC stadium on race day and starts at 06:00. The costs for licensed runners will be R35, while nonlicensed runners can participate at R55. Driftsands cops under fire RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

A spate of serious crimes and lack of police visibility led to an Imbizo being held in Driftsands last week. The Imbizo was held at the local hall and attended by members of the Mfuleni police, residents in the community and members of the Mfuleni Community Police Forum (CPF). Mfuleni police station commander, Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, told TygerBurger the Imbizo was held to find out more about Driftsands residents’ concerns. “We have noticed there are a few incidents of murders and robberies in the area perpetrated by people who are not from the area. “We want to get to the bottom of this problem and plan to assist the people here as far as we can,” said Damoyi. He said some of the main issues were the lack of police visibility and their response to crime incidents. “Some people say they are situated far from the police station, that they spend a lot of money to go to the police station. These are the issues we are going to sit down with in our planning meeting and see how best we can assist the people.”

Mfuleni police station commander Colonel Luyanda Damoyi. PHOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS He said the major crimes reported in the area were robbery and housebreaking. “Now and then there are a few murders but house robbery is the biggest crime.” Damoyi said feedback will be given to the community within the following two weeks. Resident Lonwabo Busakwe told TygerBurger that as a young person he is very

stressed and worried about the high crime rate in Driftsands. “It is the young people who are committing these crimes,”said Busakwe. “Here in Driftsands there are no mobile police station. It is critical. There must be a mobile police station for police to be able to monitor and patrol the streets because at the moment there is chaos here. “The police should be more visible.” Busakwe said young people are out of control. “This is very serious,” he said. Another resident said they would prefer having CCTV cameras installed in the community in order to monitor and record what happened on the streets and so deter criminals. CPF spokesperson Joseph Adams motivated residents to take back their streets. “Start getting to know your neighbour and be vigilant about who walks in your streets. “If your neighbour is not at home and you see suspicious activity at their place, report the matter,” he said. He encouraged the community to form street committees. “It is very important for the residents to start being involved in the safety of the community,” Joseph said.

Police recover their own firearms Weekend operations by various law enforcement agencies led to the confiscation of two police-issue firearms, numerous drugs and thousands of traffic fines issued. On Sunday 25 May officers came across a group of people outside their Bellville offices who had accosted a suspect after a chase that started in Kraaifontein. They searched the suspect and found a 9mm pistol in his

possession which was later identified as a police firearm. On Saturday 24 May, in Robinvale, Atlantis, officers chased down a suspect who fled when he spotted them. The suspect tried to open fire on the officers, but was subdued. It was found the suspect was in possession of a stolen police firearm and is wanted on charges of murder and attempted murder.

“This is one more example of how our officers are putting their lives at risk to make our communities safer. “I want to commend the officers involved for bringing this suspect to book and hopefully the criminal justice system will now ensure that he stays off the streets,” said mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith.

Fietsryers op dié pad beroof RICHARD ROBERTS @richardjohn_rj

’n Bekende fietsry-roete is nou ’n gevreesde roete weens ’n groep rowers langs dié pad.

“Ek ry nou ’n ander roete, ’n ongemaklike roete.

Sy eerste optrede was by ’n skoolbyeenkoms. Hiervan is 36 000 kopieë verkoop.”

’n Ander het ’n B.A.-graad in musiek, hy speel

A total of 85 learners from the Beverley Park Primary School in Eersteriver attended a followup visit of the school to the Blue Downs Indoor Swimming Pool recently where the Blue Flippers Swimming School taught them water safety and how to swim. “All learners enjoyed the programme and there’s hope that some of the keener learners progress to a competitive level of swimming in future,” Christopher van Niekerk, liaison officer of the Western Province Aquatics, said. According to him swimming is a healthy life skill that not only curbs drowning incidents in South Africa but also enhances development of all spheres of a balanced human being. Braille library boon for the blind

GARY VAN DYK @gvdcapejazz

The opening of a sponsored Braille library at the Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville South is a milestone to be celebrated Breadline Africa has sponsored a container which they are equipping as a Braille/ Media Library for use by learners. They also hope to extend the library services to the broader blind community over the medium to long term. Thanking the sponsors in his keynote address at the launchm deputy-principal Theodore Klink highlighted the problems that the blind encounter when it comes to Braille reading material and why this facility was so vital. He started by quoting the line from the hit song by the group Bread: “If a picture paints a thousand words then why can’t I paint you.” “So true. And just how many thousands of words are required to paint a multitude of colour and shades,” Klink pointed out. “Therein lies the dilemma for blind and partially sighted people who have no idea, or a distorted view of the physical word.” He pointed out how easy it was for mainstream learners to go a bookstore, media institutions, and libraries and use multiple platforms to source books, audio, internet and social media to source information. “Going to the website is easy as pie for sighted learners. They can surf the web. Not so easy for blind learners, the screen does not come with glass Braille or LCD Braille dots he or she can feel,” said Klink. “The only way a blind person can navigate or use a computer is by means of specialised assistive devices and access disability software which is very expensive, not to mention the cost of the computer. “For our learners access to that information source, which sighted people take for granted from variety of sources, is not possi-

PHOTO: GARY VAN DYK ble. “This (informative material) is available in a multitude of shops, bookshops a variety of libraries and easily accessible. This is not so for the visually impaired. “There is not a variety of bookshops, in fact not one nor a library available that has Braille material, not even on request within the Western Cape.” He also explained how the school had to cope with the problem. “The cost of sourcing is a problem,” he explained. The school had to forfeit its library to host physically challenged pupils on the ground

level, as well as three classrooms on the top floor because of mobility and access issues. “However, these books were out-dated and were not in Unified Braille Code and since we had no library we had books from the Lotto which were stored in boxes. “Now with this donation from Breadline Africa it presents us with the opportunity to network with provincial library services to highlight the need for financial resources ormaterial resources and books to provide information resources for our learners at public libraries even it is based at our school. “We thank them for providing us with this facility.”

My suster moes hom verder help, want ek kon nie.

One in 10 learners raped

SA children world’s most traumatised June is Child Protection month with good reason: South African children are among the most traumatised in the world. According to Jelly Beanz Inc, a nonprofit organisation in Parklands rendering direct services to children and families who have experienced abuse and trauma, abuse in the Western Cape is rife. A recent study conducted in this region showed 91% of the children who were interviewed had been exposed to traumatic events, including violent crime, domestic violence, rape and child abuse. Other research has found that one out of every ten learners has been raped in the last year. More boys are sexually abused than girls, although the reports of this to authorities are much less. Another shocking statistic is that 43% of sexual abuse of children is perpetrated by other children. When suspecting abuse, parents should therefore bear the following in mind: V Abuse happens in every community, religion and race group. V Have conversations with your children about positive sexuality, and the rules of touching private parts. V Behaviours that may show distress in your child could include: aggression, withdrawing, losing interest in activities they previously enjoyed, nightmares, bedwetting, sexual talk or play that is not appropriate for their age, continuous headaches or tummy aches that have no physical cause, as well as symptoms such as pain or swelling in the genital area.

SMS V Ek soek hulp. Groot asseblief! Bekommerde ma V The opening of Bothasig Clinic caused a sensation, especially among senior citi zens, as struggling with transport to at tend the overcrowded Goodwood Day Hospital would be a thing of the past. To their dismay, the pharmacy has been closed and the doctors have been re moved. Is the clinic going to become a white elephant? Rumour is rife that the clinic will be shut down. Will the health fo rum please enlighten the community why the services were removed? Is there any truth to the rumours? Councillor James Vos understood the plight of the elderly. Through his dedication and innovation the community had a clinic on their door step. Now that he has left our ward, serv ices rendered at the clinic have deterio rated. Anthony Oosthuizen, Bothasig V Thanks for a good newspaper. In our house, it’s always about who is going to read it first. Daar is so min parkering vir so baie ouers. Well done to city sparkies I would just like to complement and congratulate the City of Cape Town’s Electricity Department for their excellent and speedy service. I reported a faulty street light in Oakdale via email on the morning of Friday 9 May 2014, By 13:15 the light had already been fixed. If that isn’t service, then I don’t know what is. Thank you very much. A relative from Mpumalanga recently told me that a street light in their street has been out of order for more than three years. Nothing is being done about it despite their continuous reporting. The relative said they are lucky if their refuse was collected every week. Can you imagine that happening here? LYNETTE GOOSEN Oakdale

Large dogs should be on a leash I sympathise with the writer of “Honde moet aan leibande wees” (TygerBurger, 21 May). I live in Vredekloof and have experienced the same problem. It’s usually owners with large dogs who never have their dogs on leads. I have chosen to not take my dogs for a walk in the evening after work because it was not enjoyable and was turning out to be a very stressful outing. You constantly have to be on the look out for “loose” dogs. I now take my dogs for walks in the early morning before work, when it’s quieter. Most owners of large dogs insist their dogs are friendly and sociable, but when my little dogs are on a leash and a

huge dog comes bounding towards them, they naturally are going to get protective of me. Many owners of large dogs also do not even take their dogs for a walk, they just open their gates and let the dogs out. As an unsuspecting walker, you come around a corner face-to-face with a large dog with no owner in sight. Owners of large dogs should be more responsible. If they do want to walk them without a leash, get in the car and take them to a quiet area where there will be no chance of their dogs harassing and terrorising other walkers. WALKIES Brackenfell

‘Breadless” the only way left to go Many thanks for your enlightening article about the additive ADA (“Outrage sees shops ditching ‘rubber bread’”, TygerBurger, 21 May). Another additive in most factory-made breads is a mould inhibitor, calcium propionate (E282). Have a look and see what that chemical is all about. It can also cause allergies and has side effects. Thanks, but I prefer to be bread-less! COLIN Email

ANONIEM Faks

Breast feeding sparks interest A few weeks ago I stopped an intersection in the CBD. My eight-year-old daughter asked me what the young girl sitting on the roadsidewas doing. I realised she was breastfeeding in public view. Farther along a mature man was cycling wearing only tiny shorts that resembled underwear. My daughter wanted to know why the man was basically naked in the middle of the city. Her curiosity reminded me of events when I was a ward councillor. One day I visited an irate elderly man who complained that his neighbour had packed pumpkins on the roof. The elderly man demanded that I have the pumpkins removed. To keep Cape Town hygienic, multicultural and inclusive does not entail rejecting civilised values, whatever that may denote. This suggests that the broader community and media should manage a process from which locals can determine what suitable values are. It is vital that authorities constantly remind newcomers we have standards. YAGYAH ADAMS Email

Desmond Wells will be perfoming at the junior finals of the Making of a Star competition.

Chance for stardom beckons LOUISA STEYL Entries for this year’s Making of a Star singing competition are being called for by SuriNet Creations. The first competition took place last year with the focus on a special prize for the original song category. Petra Mans, who won the category last year, walked away with a music video recording worth R5000, a photo shoot worth R1500 and a makeover. “I’m also a singer/songwriter, and I know that it’s not very easy to make it in the music industry, you need to have a platform,” says Sumare Koegelenberg from SuriNet. The difference in this competition is the focus on original material, giving big main prizes to the winners and allowing them to use the competition as a springboard for their careers. While this year’s prizes haven’t been finalised, Sumare says they are hoping to go bigger. They are also throwing their net a little wider by hosting preliminary rounds at the Weskus Mall in Vredenburg. Categories for this year’s competition include Afrikaans, English, duets, trios, gospel, country, sound and look alike, original material and classical/musical. While the senior category last year was open for people 18 years and older, it now includes singers from the age of 14. Children as young as six can enter the juniors section of the competition. Northern Suburbs preliminary rounds start on 26 July at Van Riebeeck Hall in Kuils River. Entries cost R50 per person or R40 per person for duets and groups, but participants are welcome to enter as many categories as they’d like. The junior finals will be at Special Memories in Brackenfell on Friday 5 September with Desmond Wells as MC for the evening. The big attraction though, will be the senior finals which will be held at the All Star Theatre on Saturday 13 September. Stefan Ludik, known for his role as Gustav in the Binneland television show, will be the MC for the evening, while Elvis se Seun will be performing as the guest artist. V For more information about the competition, or to download an entry form, visit www.surinetcreati ons.com or the Making of a Star Facebook page.

Old sports The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) partners with the city to host the Metropole Regional Golden Games at the Blue Downs Athletics Stadium. The games, for senior citizens, are be held tomorrow, 29 May, and start at 09:30. In addition to track and field events, the games include fun items such as the duck walk, goal-shoot, pass-the-ball, a dress-up race and “ring the stick”. The best athletes will represent their region at the Provincial Golden Games in July this year. Through the Games, the department and city give senior citizens a chance to show off their sporting skills and the chance to continue expressing their zest for life by participating in the sports they love. Humble start for new Delft cricket club STEHAN SCHOEMAN The main aim of the newly founded Boundaries Cricket Club for children in Delft and Belhar, is simply to give youngsters the opportunity to play the game. This is the vision of founder Mervin Maneville. “I remember when I was still at school some years ago, I was invited to Western Province schools cricket trials. When I got there I was told I can’t play without proper

shoes. I just had my school shoes,” said Mervin. “This is my vision with this club, to give kids the opportunity I never had. I’m inviting them to come and play cricket and spend their time wisely and not get involved with gangs and drugs that are the downfall of so many,” said a determined Mervin. For now, they play with a tennisball wrapped with insulation tape, and home made bats.

“We play on concrete in a park named ‘Die Bome-parkie’ in Belhar and there is another park in Delft where we play, which is also concrete. “It’s not much for now, but we are playing the game and we enjoy it,” said Mervin. The success of the club will without a shadow of doubt be determined by the involvement of sponsors and established surrounding cricket clubs giving them access to their training facilities and pitches. For the time being the wheels are in mo-

tion and the children are getting practice. They compete regularly in matches with the Mustangs (Belhar) and Royal Tigers (Delft). “It is my dream that in the near future we can get proper equipment, proper training facilities and ultimately have Boundaries Cricket Club compete in the Western Province league.” V Companies or individuals wanting to contribute or get involved with the club can phone Mervin Ma neville on 084 332 4501.

‘Unique’ marathon takes centre stage in city The route is confirmed and entries are open for this year’s Cape Town Marathon on Sunday 21 September. In addition to providing an opportunity for participants from around the world to run through the beautiful city of Cape Town, this iconic city marathon has prize money in excess of R1.6 million, the largest sum ever for a South African standard marathon. “Young or old, professional or amateur; the Mother City welcomes you and invites you to be part of this year’s historic Cape Town Marathon,” Olympian and Cape Town Marathon Ambassador Elana Meyer. “We are already receiving huge international interest,” says Meyer. Not only have the organisers been approached by several other leading international city marathons, but in addition, participation by the likes of

Dominic Kangor Kimwetich (Kenya; qualifying time of 2.09.36, 2014 Brighton Marathon) and Serkalem Taye Guililat (Nigeria; qualifying time of 2.31.50, 2013 Marrakech Marathon) have been confirmed. Taking place on Sunday 21 September, the 42.2km marathon will provide runners a unique car-free experience of the city’s stunning natural and cultural attractions. “And, over and above the prestige and personal achievement involved, the lure of great financial reward awaits,” adds Meyer. With prize money totaling over R1.2m across all categories, additional cash prizes are up for grabs in all other events scheduled over the action-packed spring weekend. For a detailed breakdown of prize money on offer, visit http://www.capetownmarathon.com/information/prizes/.

An exhilarating festival of running, the Cape Town Marathon brings together a range of runners from elite athletes to social joggers and community teams. While the classic Olympian 42.2km marathon takes centre stage, weekend activities include a 10km Peace Run, a 5km Peace Fun Run, adventurous trail runs and a team-building relay race, ensuring something for everyone. Brought to you by SA sporting greats Elana Meyer and Francois Pienaar, the 2014 Cape Town Marathon is managed by a partnership between Western Province Athletics (WPA), ASEM Running and the City of Cape Town who aim to develop the Cape Town Marathon into one of the rare and prestigious World Marathon Majors. To register online and for further details, please visit www.capetownmarathon.com.

Ander wedstryde is: Kuilsrivier t NNK, UWK t Bellville, Belhar t Primrose, Valsbaai t Tygerberg-klub, Villager t Brackenfell, Young Peoples t Goodwood, Pniël Villagers t Kraaifontein, Scottsdene t Sir Lowrians, Hands & Heart t Hamlets.
