DUMP TRANSFORMED: THRIVING MINISTRY

The garden of good hope an inspiration GARY VAN DYK

A

derelict dump in Delft has become a beautiful beacon of hope in the area. The Footprints of Righteousness is a garden in Sandui Crescent that was started by Caroline Joseph next to what used to be a derelict park that became a dumping ground. This garden has become more than just pretty plants and flowers, but symbolises the positive empowerment that can be transformed from rubble. Joseph lives next to the area that became a dumping ground since the 1990s, and she was motivated to make that difference by transforming it into a place of pride, and it plays a part in transforming lives in the area. She explained that she could not stand by and watch as people walked through the dirt. “For me that was a sign that people were accepting, and becoming part of that dirt and rubble in the park,” she said. “I prayed about it and accepted the task of taking the rubble that littered the area, transforming it, and the lives of people in this area.

Life lessons with pizza

The derelict park was not the only rubble that she transformed through this project. The garden has helped transforming some lives as well. “Drugs have played a big part in destroying so many young lives,” she said. “I realised that this garden could also be a part of re-growing some of those lives to become positive forces in the community. “With this project I started using some of those lives whose families had given up on them. I got them involved in helping me, and showing them how the rubble that we use to make this garden can be transformed, and with the same nurturing their lives can also change.” The project is now a full-time endeavour and ministry for Joseph, and has also grown into a skills project with a variety of arts and crafts classes also taking place. “The importance of this project is now more about the healing that it can bring to the lives of those affected by drugs,” she continued.

“The flourishing garden shows the community what can come from hard work, patience and constant care”

Proud “It was difficult at first but I kept at it, making people aware of how they could play a part in nurturing something special in their neighbourhood. “Now everybody is proud and protective about it.”

Patience “The flourishing garden shows the community what can come from hard work, patience and constant care. It’s always difficult, like caring for a garden, but you don’t give up, eventually with all the counselling, even referrals to rehab you make that difference and a life is changed for the good.” “Eventually the families become proud of their children again, like the community has become proud of this garden.” V Joseph can be contacted on 078 306 3942.

he said. They benefit through subjects such as business studies. “What we found is that many pupils approach our help for entrepreneur’s day at schools. Asking us to sell our pizzas at a cheaper price,” Charlie said. Through this initiative it has brought them (Scooter’s) a lot of business and money but at the same time allowed them to give back to the community. Helping with necessary funds for various schools. “This is exactly what the hospitality industry needs to do. “At the same time, the staff from Scooter’s Pizza enjoy being involved,” he said. Cheryl Snell (Grade R teacher at Dennemere Primary) said: “I was very excited and the children looked forward to this. They learned many things which involve life orientation, personal hygiene and how to be cautious when working with fire and safety rules in the kitchen.”

On 20 June, pupils from Dennemere Primary visited the Scooter’s Pizza store in Blue Downs. They were introduced to the art of pizza making as well as the history behind the Italian delicacy and constructing their very own pizza. This was part of a marketing strategy which over 110 Scooter’s Pizza franchises have taken up nationally. “It is important that children see what real work is and through this initiative, it has worked very well,” said owner of Blue Downs Scooter’s Pizza Charlie Olivier. This has also been to the benefit of some teachers who teach older pupils who are interested in the marketing side of the business. “Many of them want to work and sometimes struggle with learning but with practise they can see exactly what’s happening,”

Lucky escape in oncoming train crash A family of four escaped death after a train collided with their car on June 20, in Eerste River. It was confirmed on Friday, last week by Metrorail Western Cape regional manager, Mthuthuzeli Swartz, that an accident had occurred. It was said that a motor vehicle and train (number 3220) collided at the Lafarge level crossing at Eerste River. The train was en route to Cape Town from Strand at 13:20 when according to reports it encountered the vehicle already stationary on the tracks. Emergency services assisted the four occupants who were present in the vehicle at

the time of the accident. Two of the four occupants were taken to Tygerberg Hospital for medical attention and the remaining two were treated on the scene for shock. It was said by witnesses on the scene that the driver tried to cross the railway in a state of panic after seeing the oncoming train. Swartz once again cautioned motorists to approach level crossings with the utmost care: “A train takes less than a minute to safely clear a crossing.” Train services were briefly affected, but no injuries were reported on the train. The scene was cleared at 14:02.

Leticia van der Ventel is all smiles as she receives her certificate. With her is community worker Eugene Devis, and councillor Jacob Jacobs.

Second group now ready to Work for a Living TAMSYN COERECIUS

T

he second group who completed the three-week Badisa Work for a Living Programme was elated with joy when they received their certificates last Friday at the Sarepta Community Hall. There was clapping and cheers as each member stood up and received a reward of merit for their accomplishment. Participant, Leverne Bruintjies from Kalkfontein says: “It feels great. I managed to finish the programme when so many backed out,” she says.

Stepping up The participants were taught how to set up CVs, how to dress for interviews and how to fill out job applications to mention a few. Councillor Jacob Jacobs who works closely with Badisa says that he is truly proud that the unemployed in the community are stepping up and doing something about their situation. Leverne says that she often remembers conducting interviews not knowing how to answer specific questions. “I finally know how to apply for jobs and

how to answer questions during interviews,” she says. Eugene Devis, community worker at Badisa, says he was very happy about the turn-out after the success of the first group. He says the programme aims to speak to the youth directly and not only teaches them how to act in the working environment, but also how to be professional, keep their morales high and encourages them to believe in themselves.

Breadwinner “We are only going to grow and reach and change more lives” he says. Leverne says being unemployed and having two children means it is often difficult to put bread on the table and her husband is the only breadwinner. She hopes to find a job working as an admin assistant. Eugene urges companies to recruit these participants. “I saw them grow into confident people who have the will to succeed and with these skills they can,” he says. V If you are interested in recruiting these partici pants or for more information phone Eugene on 021 906 1881.

Theft from cars a concern for cops Car thieves are checking you out! Police want to warn the public to be aware of an increase in incidents of theft from cars, especially car batteries. The public should be aware of taking extra precautions like making sure that your car is parked in a safe and secure area, all windows should be closed and doors must be locked. People are also asked to ensure that valu-

ables like laptops, cellphones, wallets, and handbags are not visible but locked in the boot of the vehicle. Police have also warned people that they should not buy any suspected stolen property because this could also lead to their prosecution. Suspicious persons or vehicles in an area must also be reported to the police as soon as possible.

‘Youth can be leaders today’ GARY VAN DYK A youth organisation is calling on communities to call on them to empower unemployed youth. YoungPeople@Work has been very busy hosting information sessions in various areas and want to spread their wings to where they are needed. Head of the organisation Frank Julies pointed out that these workshops and sessions have been very successful and they’re inviting the community to get them to where youth are at risk. “Our vision is about young people engaged in productive work to enhance economic, social, cultural and spiritual development,” he said. “We regard working on oneself as the most productive work and in our programme youth are not just recipients of predesigned programmes, but active partici-

pants in the design themselves. “Our youth are seen as assets not liabilities and we believe they have inherent talents, strengths and positive energy that must be harnessed to facilitate their holistic development to their fullest potential. “They can be leaders today and not just tomorrow.” During information sessions volunteers from YPW inform unemployed youth about its various programmes such as computer literacy, life skills, job shadowing, CV bank, job placements, Leader-to-Leader project, and other relevant activities. Unemployed youth will be welcome to ask questions, get referrals and support to develop their own CVs for free. V Interested youth organisations or individuals can contact YoungPeople@Work for a free Community Information Session at their local library or any other suitable venue. Tips for keeping your child safe this school holiday

T

he three-week long mid-year school holiday has finally arrived. For children it’s a welcome break, but for many parents who have to work it can be a stressful period of constantly wondering if their child is safe. There are, however, some basic and practical safety precautions parents can introduce to their children, regardless of whether they are left with a caregiver, domestic staff or stay at home by themselves. “It is important that they know to always keep entry and exit doors locked, and that no-one is to enter the home without your permission,” said Rob Dale, managing director of ADT Security, Western Cape. He urged that it is a good idea to make use of a list of emergency contacts.

10111 This includes the 10111 number near the telephone in order to explain to them when and how it should be used. “If you have a home security system installed teach them how to activate and deactivate it and how and when to use other security devices like panic buttons,” Rob advised. The cold weather means that children are often confined indoors, allowing boredom to quickly set in. There are usually solutions for this, such as wanting to visit a friend who lives in the neighbourhood. If you are not able to drop your child off

or arrange a lift for them, Rob suggests that parents walk the route with their children before they have to do it on their own. “Explain that it is better to take a longer route down familiar streets where there is more activity than taking short-cuts across fields or through deserted areas or roads they’re not used to,” he said.

Mall security “On the day, they must call you to let you know that they are about to leave home and again once when they have arrived at their friend’s home. “If while walking they find themselves in an unfamiliar street, they should look out for a police or security officer and never talk to or take advice or a ride from a stranger.” Shopping malls are also, as a result of the holidays, busier and is a popular hang-out for older children. If children are going to a movie or to meet friends, they should be encouraged to look after their belongings and to look out for each other. “Busy malls present a prime opportunity for pick-pockets. They need to hold tightly onto their handbags, wallets and cellphones,” Rob said. It is also important that if they become separated from their friends they head straight to the mall information desk or to security personnel and try to track them down from there.

Be one of Eat Out’s top 500 SA’s most trusted restaurant guide, the annual Eat Out magazine, is re-vamping its 2014 issue and is giving all restaurants the opportunity to put their hands up to be considered for the issue. Restaurants must simply submit an easyto-complete form at no cost, by 30 June. “We’re taking Eat Out to a new level and giving every restaurant the chance to earn their place in the ‘Eat Out 500’ – a power list of great restaurants across South Africa. We want everyone to have a chance to be considered,” says Anelde Greeff, content director for Eat Out. Restaurants who submit themselves to be part of the Eat Out 500 will be scored on a variety of criteria by a panel of 50 of South

Africa’s top food/restaurant industry experts. The criteria include food (menu composition, seasonality, presentation, wine, etc.) service and ambience. The 500 restaurants with the highest aggregate scores will appear in the 16th annual issue of the Eat Out magazine, which will go on sale in November 2013. Download the form (www.eatout.co.za/ uploads/documents/EatOut_Restaurantsubmission-form_2013.pdf ) or complete the form online (www.myjotform.com/ EatOut/restaurant).

Satzke V The explanation of the councillor for the sinkhole in Stikland (“Corrosive substance” blamed, TB, 19 June) shows his lack of knowledge of the real cause. The sand around the pipe gets washed away by leakage and the road collapses. It happens all over. Johan George V Ek wil net dankie sê vir A (TB, 19/06) dat jy verstaan. Nee, Wentzel, doen huiswerk, dan sal jy verstaan! Anon V Mike re. Groenvallei/Heemstede and Joubert Park neighbourhood watch. We are registered and need more members for patrols. You may contact Pam on 084 283 9012. Anon V I strongly recommend the people who treat Van Riebeekshof Road as a raceway and ignore red lights at the Spar should volunteer for a few hours service at Tygerberg Casualty Ward or even the morgue. Possibly you might see the consequences of your reckless behaviours.

Ek eet gereeld in Brackenfell se restaurante. VELDMUIS Brackenfell

Bus drivers just couldn’t care less We just read the article (“Action was a wonderful man”, TygerBurger, 22 May) about the tragic accident in which Mr Tsepiso Dlamini passed away a few weeks ago. It was mentioned that up to now, it hasn’t been established whether the bus driver or Mr Dlamini ignored a red robot.

Today (19 June), as we travelled from Tygervalley Centre on Durban Road, we witnessed the following: A Golden Arrow Bus, with the number 1485 on the driver’s door and travelling on Durban Road towards Durbanville, ignored the red robot at the same crossing (Fairmont High School) at 16:14. The bus entered the crossing when the robot was on red. So it was not a situation where the bus crossed the line on orange. We were five people in the vehicle and four of us saw this happening. We were behind the bus and had to stop at the red robot but were able to keep an eye on the bus until we were able to make a note of the numbers above at one of the next robots. I wonder whether the accident at the school had any effect on training. I am not saying that the bus driver was responsible for Mr Dlamini’s death, but, surely, it must have had an influence on the communication between Golden Arrow and their drivers. It looks to me as if some of the drivers either did not get the message or just couldn’t care less. GERHARD Durbanville

NEVILLE BOTHA Kuilsrivier

They don’t respect the neighbourhood It is very disturbing to see adults behaving like pigs. At least a pig dirties his own pen. Here we find people worse than that. Their rubbish is dumped next to another man’s house. We are supposed to love each other, care for each other and protect each other’s property. People simply have no respect for their neighbourhood, let alone their fellow man. How can I teach my child respect and manners if I do not set an example. We talk about the evils of drugs and gangsterism, yet behave like thieves dumping rubbish at night. We need divine intervention. A STRIDE Scottsville

City gives fire safety advice The cold and inclement winter weather over the next few months will force people to constantly seek ways of keeping warm using warming devices like heaters and brazier fires. If not monitored properly, these devices can and often do, result in residential fires. According to the city’s Fire and Rescue Services, they have responded to a total of 1 124 residential fires since the beginning of this year. Half of these fires occured in informal settlements resulting in 2 442 structures being destroyed and the deaths of 49 people, including 12 children. Fires occurred mostly in the following areas: Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu, Philippi, Strand, Kraaifontein and Atlantis. In almost all of these incidents, the fires could have been avoided and were caused as a result of negligence when using cooking appliances, heaters and other electrical devices. The public should also keep in mind that cigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, electrical faults, heating and cooking appliances, and equipment, such as electric blankets, are potentially hazardous. The city’s Fire and Rescue Services will be teaming up with other role players, such as Disaster Risk Management, 107 (Public Emergency Call Centre), community NGOs and Community Policing Forums, to ensure that the maximum number of residents are educated on all aspects of fire safety and know where to report related incidents immediately. V Report fires by dialling 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone. Alternatively, call Fire Control directly on 021 590 1900 or Law Enforce ment on 021 596 1999.

Living with breast cancer A morning seminar will be presented at the Vineyard Hotel Cape Town on Saturday 20 July. Mamba will strike, says coach Durandt

Gideon Drotschie will have a lot to prove tomorrow night.

THOMAS CAROLUS Evans “Mamba” Mbamba has had a 10-month lay-off from competing but ring-rust won’t be a factor when he headlines the “Chesanyama Bill” against Mario “Maca” Briones for the vacant WBF junior-featherweight title at Graceland Casino, in Mpumalanga on Saturday, June 29. Mbamba’s celebrated trainer Nick Durandt, who has produced 21 world and 94 SA champions, said his charge has not only been preparing for this fight but has been active as a sparring partner for several months now. “Evans won’t be affected by the lay-off because he’s been active as a sparring partner in my gym long before this fight was on,” said Durandt. “And what’s more, he has the IBF (flyweight) world champ Moruti (Mthalane) as his chief sparring partner now. Moruti is similar to a Mexican fighter like Briones so Evans will be well prepared. “This time Evans has just got so much going for him. He has lost two world title shots outside the country but this time he’ll be on home soil. “He’ll have the crowd rooting for him, and he’ll be in front of his fans.

Record must hold STEHAN SCHOEMAN

omorrow night (Thursday) will be a bone-crunching affair when Gideon Drotschie (Kuils River) takes on Gauteng’s Danie van Heerden in an Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) light heavyweight title fight at Carnival City. The fight will be televised live on SuperSport. To date, Gideon has a blemish-free record with five wins as an amateur and three professionally. Three years ago when he first set foot in Rico Hattingh’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy he new this was it. He felt at home immediately and who better than Rico Hattingh to mentor you?

Respect “Rico plays such a huge role in my success. Everyone in MMA circles

THE BATTERY EXPERTS

knows Rico. He is a respected man and the wealth of knowledge he has is being passed on to me. He has been in my situation plenty of times and he knows what to expect, so in that respect he keeps me calm. “In terms of my preparation for this fight, I think we achieved everything we wanted to. Danie comes from a boxing background so I expect that he would try and keep the fight standing. Having said that, I am ready for anything he throws at me,” he said. “I see a lot of myself in Gideon when I was his age. He is very determined to win every fight, so far his record states that. This will be his toughest fight to date, but I am confident he can win. I will be in his corner to help him. This is a very exciting time,” said Rico. Gideon also gives classes to primary schoolchildren at the Welgele-

“He’s been unlucky in his previous title attempts when rather hostile conditions prevailed. But this time we don’t want to get lucky, we want the title on merit.” “Evans has been warned that once the fight starts Briones will put his head down in the best tradition of Mexican boxers. Briones will be no push-over. “This fight has come at the right time for Evans, who I believe has faced a better calibre of fighter than Briones. “One has to remember that Evans was once the WBC no 1 contender, and that’s the most prestigious (of the organisations).” The second world title bout on the “Chesanyama Bill” will be between Gabisile “Simply the Best” Tshabalala and Australia’s Shannon “Shotgun” O’Connell for the vacant WBF women’s featherweight title. According to her trainer and manager Elias Mpembe, the undefeated Tshabalala (won 8, ko 0, lost 0, drawn 1) is ready for what could be the crowning moment of her fistic career. “Gabisile would be ready if the fight was tomorrow,” said Mpembe. “She’s got all the tools for the job ... she’s got it all.”

gen NG church hall on Tuesdays. According to Rico this helps Gideon in growing as a fighter.

Training “You need a lot of patience and these children help you with that. Sometimes you need to show them certain techniques over and over and you must have patience and not become irritated. Gideon is brilliant with them and that is what he needs in fights like this. “The fight is not always going to suit your pace or style and that is when you need patience and take the gap when it presents itself,” said Rico. As with all other MMA fighters, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is where the best of the best compete. When the dust settles Friday night, Gideon may just be one step closer to the big stage.

he final qualification round of the 10th annual Engen Knockout Challenge kicked off with goals galore on Sunday. The field has now been whittled down from over 100 teams to just 32 sides, divided into eight groups of four teams each. Grassy Park side Crusaders grabbed first place on the Group One standings with a 4-2 victory over Elsies River, while Cape United beat Kensington 1-0 to take second place. In Group Two Mitchells Plain’s Kenpark United and Invincible Cravenby took first and second on the standings respectively, after Kenpark beat Two Oceans Academy 2-0 and Cravenby edged FC Kapstadt 2-1.

Shock Hanover Park FC thrashed Bright Stars 7-1 to take the top spot in Group Three, while Kuils River FC beat Mitchell’s Plain’s Leeds Lentegeur 2-1 to claim second place. .
