School gets a complete make-over TAMSYN COERECIUS

alkfontein Primary School was an array of green last Friday when the learners of the school took hands with Mpact members and tackled muchneeded projects to make the school a picture perfect learning area. All the feverish activity was in support of the Adopt-a-School foundation, which started in 2002 and aims to address inequalities in rural and disadvantaged schools. “Our plans include long-term involvement at the schools to improve both the quality of education and the school facilities to the benefit of learners,” says Bruce Strong, CEO of Mpact. The sounds of laughter and clatter was heard clearly as the learners helped the Mpact staff with many necessities including the installation of burglar bars, repairs and improvements to the playground, expansion of the vegetable garden and planting of trees.

Damian Baron and Cameron Botha are helping to clean the vegetable garden.

Theft Celia Leibbrandt, member of Mpact said, upon approaching Principal Marius Vercuil of the school put heads together and identified key concerns which had to be addressed – one being theft. “There have been many break-ins at the school especially during weekends, because there are no burglar bars on class doors and it’s easy to jump over the walls. Often accessories in classrooms are stolen, which teachers pay from their own pockets,” Marius says. The Mpact members installed 40 burglar bars, erected 97 windows and nine se-

curity gates to try and eliminate the theft problem. Another need identified at the school was the expansion of the vegetable garden, which out of 1 100 learners could only feed half. The Mpact team together with Stodels then cleaned the garden area and planted an assortment of vegetables.

Grateful Vercuil says that he immediately picked up the sincerity Celia had and feels grateful that they gave the school this opportunity. As learners pitched in and shuffled soil, picked up garbage and planted trees they expressed their gratitude. Learner, Damian Baron says: “My friends and I have been helping since this morning. We don’t mind pitching in. We are making our school beautiful,” he says. Other projects included the school field being cleared and trees being planted around the field. The pre-primary playground was tidied up and two sandpits were built for kids as well as the parking lot which was cleaned and beautified with plants. The learners were also spoiled with a boerewors roll and Coke. Celia says that what they have done today is only Phase 1. In the near future they are planning on painting the school, upgrading the school hall as well as the sport field. “All 80 members of our team did this from their heart and for these kids. We aren’t always focused on business and money, through our business we want to make a difference,” she says.

Crime cluster ops roundup On Thursday 16 May a cluster operation which included the Kleinvlei, Mfuleni and Kuils River police took place. Together with the Crime Intelligence Gathering (CIG), a house in Raymond Ackerman street was approached where 54 SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) cards, 38 ID books, five Absa cards, three Capitec cards, four post bank cards and an FNB and Nedbank card were confiscated. W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, media spokesperson for the Kleinvlei police confirmed that SASSA officials were asked to come out and investigate the incident. “SASSA will deal with the lost card and stolen ID books. It was uncalled for and what makes it sad is that the majority of

the people are elderly,” said Mothoalo. A suspect has been arrested. In a separate incident, in a house in Melville street, Beverly Park, Graham Mongale was arrested for the alleged possession of a hand grenade. Motives as to how he obtained the object are unknown. Also a house in Devontree Street, Stradford Green yielded one magazine with five rounds and mandrax tablets for which a male suspect, Christopher Martins was arrested. “We would like to thank and applaud the community and as informers to the police and the CIG,” said Mothoalo. She further applauded the community’s involvement in wanting to curb crime.

‘Softer’ test for heart arrhythmias The very first electrophysiology (EP) study was performed at Melomed hospital in Bellville last week by Dr Neil Hendricks, resident cardiologist and electrophysiologist. Hendricks recently joined the group and is already well-known for his work in the state of the art catheterisation laboratory at Melomed Bellville. EPS is a minimally invasive procedure

which tests the electrical conduction system of the heart to assess the electrical activity and conduction pathways. During EPS, sinus rhythm as well as supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias of baseline cardiac intervals is recorded. The study is indicated to investigate the cause, location of origin, and best treatment for various abnormal heart rhythms.

trol them properly. They need to have more respect for their elders,” she said. The business hub is one of the first developments in the Happy Valley area and for business owner Peshida Nyamande (26) these acts of vandalism is disheartening. Peshide owns Tapes and Tin Computers, an internet cafe, and is often the target because vandals can make a killing with stolen cables and computer parts. “It is very painful to see people trying to get you down. Sometimes I want to give up,” Peshida said. She highlights that it is difficult for her to pay rent and is living off the little she makes from photocopy sales. “Parents need to see to the behaviour of their children, They should be attending school instead they are hanging around here,” she said. Doreen emphasises that the sole purpose of the cafe was to make it central for the community and save petrol money. “Government has ploughed a lot of money into the business hive and for future business to operate it is just impossible, said Doreen. She hopes that a law will be put in place to keep drug dealers and vandals off the streets. “The dark corners is where they do their business. “This is where they kill people. “We are tired of Happy Valley’s drug dealers and children who don’t go to school,” said Doreen.

Shoppers at Grand Central Shopping Centre in Eerste River should be alert – hiding in the hustle and bustle are criminals ready to strike. Nicolaas and Lina Smit learned this after their monthly groceries, together with their car – 1999 red Ford Laser – was stolen on Friday 10 May. The elderly pair who have been living at Penhill Estate for the last 40 years, usually do their grocery shopping at the centre. “We do our shopping there because it’s closer to the house. We entered for a mere few minutes and the next thing you know, our car is gone,” said Nicolaas. A security guard had been on guard but his attempts in assisting the couple proved unfruitful. “He handed us a piece of paper to give to the manager of Shoprite, asking for a fence to be put around the parking area,” said Nicolaas. He immediately raised questions as to whether this solution would further prevent criminals from engaging in such activity. “We only want our car back, that’s all,” said Lina. Nicolaas raised his concerns that had his situation been notified to another police station, specifically in the southern suburbs, it would have been discovered sooner. “The police should be doing their work more effectively during the day,” said Nicolaas. Spokeswoman for Kleinvlei police, Annacletta Mothoalo acknowledged that incidences such as these occur everyday. “People tend to leave things in the car which draws attenition to thieves,” said Mothoalo. She further urged the community to not leave their belongings visible or unattended. Station Commander of Kleinvlei police, Colonel Joan Stroebel will be not tolerate any miscondut regarding service delivery or misconduct by the police. “They should not forget that they are serving the people,” said Mothoalo. Youth development has solid employment basis Youth development is coming into the spotlight with some new initiatives by the city. In keeping with this administration’s commitment to building a Caring and Safe City, the City of Cape Town Social Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate have begun implementing a number of projects specifically aimed at youth development. These include two Expanded Public Works Programme job creation projects, providing support to organisations from the communities that youth reside in to assist them to gain works skills. This is linked to the work skills training project that provides two-month job opportunities to apply the skills learnt through the training provided by the city There will also be life skills training sessions with school-going youth as part of an extramural activity. Six work and employment skills training workshops for unemployed and out of school youth at risk through the University of the Western Cape will also be taking place while the Cape Peninsula University of Technology will be arranging six organisational capacity-building workshops for organised youth structures, networks and forums. “Young people need opportunities like these to engage in meaningful activities, have a voice, take responsibility for their actions, and actively participate in civic

discourse,” said mayoral committee member for social development and early childhood development, Suzette Little. She also pointed out that this programme wants to facilitate young people’s entry into the job market and thus work towards reducing youth unemployment levels by providing young people with work and employment skills, support and training. “Through this initiative we want to build partnerships and networks to render support to youth at risk in a co-ordinated manner by collaborating with other line departments, other spheres of government particularly the Provincial Department of Social Development and civil society. “We hope to increase youth involvement and active citizenship by building the capacity of youth organisations and leaders to become agents in their own development who make meaningful contributions to their communities “We know that gangsterism and substance abuse is rife in many communities. And that the high unemployment rate amongst our youth increases their chances of getting involved in dangerous activities. “It is therefore our hope that by providing added opportunities for Cape Town’s young people, we will assist them to reach their full developmental potential and become healthy and happy adults who are able to contribute significantly and positively to their communities,” she concluded.

‘Karate not just a sport but also a way of living’ TANDYLEE MARINUS Discipline, confidence, speed and timing. These are some of the traits which members of the Ryushin-Kan, School of Karate South Africa (Hunbo Dojo) in Eerste River should possess. The dojo was established 15 years ago by Sensei Coral Jacobs and her father, Kyoshi Elias Jacobs. As a 4th dan black belt and karate instructor, her many achievements have been well rewarded and show just how well her determination has paid off. “I love working with children and would like to share my experience and expertise with them so that they can apply it elsewhere,” said Coral. Coral considers her karate classes more of a community service, steering the attention of the youth away from negative attractions. “Karate is not only a sport, it is a way of helping and educating others,” she said. The highly respected sport, enables young men and women to address themselves instead of what they portray to to others. “Karate is not just about kicking and fighting,” said Coral. On Saturday 4 May, 15 of her students participated in the Karate Association of Western Cape All Styles Tournament held at the Belhar Indoor Sports Arena. The Hunbo-Dojo Ryushin-Kan of Eerste River produced eight students of which five received gold and three bronze. “It was an amazing but nerve wracking experience to compete against such experienced athletes, but I am very proud,” Coral said. This was the first time that the dojo of Eerste River had competed at a competition

at this level. “Some doubted our skill, but to have students get onto the mat, already made them winners. It’s not just about the gold, but the fact that we achieved a goal,” she said. Finalists who took part at the tournament represented the Western Cape at the National All Styles Championship on 17 and 18 May in Durban. Coral received a first place, gold medal and qualified for the zone six championships in Namibia at the end of June. She was also elected as captain for the Western Cape team. Coral speaks about preparing for competitions as a mental, physical and fitness journey which is endured for two hours a week. Her students are dedicated to putting in extra hours to ensure that they are well equipped for upcoming competitions. “Every bit of training is important for them and they’ve learned that hard work pays off,” Coral said. The core reason for why she opened a dojo was to curb the ongoing bullying experienced among the youth. She highlights that it is not only a sport but home and school, teaching them the basic principles of becoming a better person. “The sport encourages children to get rid of their fear of being bullied and to gain confidence. Although fighting does not solve everything,” Coral said. She encourages her students to practise their skills in a controlled manner and only when necessary. “They need only sting their rivals with a bit of pain and then walk away the better person,” she concluded. V Anyone who would like to attend lessons can con tact Coral Jacobs on 082 444 1765 for more infor mation.

The beautiful Tascha Olieslager can only achieve independence if her parents somehow manage to raise the funds for a cochlear implant. PHOTO: ANDRÉ BAKKES

‘It’s so quiet’ trapped in a silent world ANDRÉ BAKKES When her mother arrived at the motorcycle accident scene, Tascha Olieslager was surrounded by paramedics. The distraught Michele ignored her injured husband and ran straight towards Tascha. Paramedics tried to calm her down and said that her daughter was concussed, because she couldn’t hear anything. At that frantic moment Tascha looked up to her mother and said: “I don’t want to die Mommy...” Michele just yelled over and over again: “She’s not concussed! She’s deaf!” This strong and determined woman, who never stepped back from a fight on behalf of the 22-year-old Tascha, couldn’t hold back the tears any longer while she recounted the tale to TygerBurger. She would come to depend on her fighting spirit in the midst of the coming tempest. Table View’s Olieslagers need to raise R338 000 for a cochlear implant for Tascha. Various fundraisers have, to date, not even dented that exorbitant amount, but the eventual benefit of this implant will give credence to the saying: “Every step is worth it and every step is worth the step it took to get there.” Tascha was born with limited hearing, but her parents only discovered this after a year and a half. Michele elaborates: “She was at a day mother and when I went to pick her up the day mother made a joke and said ‘We lost Tascha today.’ Apparently she was calling and calling her, but she couldn’t find her. She finally found her behind the curtains by the sliding door. The day mother said to me that I should take Tascha for some tests.” Soon after it was discovered that Tascha was almost completely deaf. She was two years old when she got her first hearing aid. Her condition has deteriorated over the years and now she has no hearing in her left ear and less than 50 % in her right ear. Yet, when her hearing aid broke last year, Tascha had to cope with a deathly silence for four days... “She cried... It was horrible... Once you have sound and it’s completely taken away from you it’s horrendous,” says Michele. Tascha adds slowly and laboriously: “It’s hard to explain to someone how it is... It’s so very quiet... One only hears loud bangs...” As fate would have it, the broken hearing aid forced Tascha to go to Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital and there a doctor told Michele that a cochlear implant could improve her daughter’s hearing ten-fold. “I don’t want to be six foot under when Tascha goes completely deaf. This implant could open so many doors for her! We can’t find her a job... She wants to be an events and wedding planner, but she can’t do it without the implant. I tell people that she’s got a heart of gold. She’s stunning! She will bend over backwards to help someone! Tascha wants to get out of these four walls... She wants to go out into the big world... But no-one will give her that chance,” says Michele before concluding that there are various fundraisers that she’s planning. V Contact Michele on 078 703 5371 or go to website for more information.

Hottest acts for warmup GARY VAN DYK There’s good news on two fronts for music fans going to The Whispers concert next week. The first part of that good news is that it will save you some money because the ticket prices have dropped for their performance at His People Centre in Parow. Promoter Calvin Peters says that this decision was made to allow as many of their fans as possible to get the chance to see this group in action. “People who have already bought a ticket will be refunded the difference, and they can just go to their nearest Computicket,” he said. The other part of the good news is that some icons in the entertainment business will be the opening act for them. Vernon Castle’s Legends Band featuring Ian Smith on trumpet, Allou April on guitar, Sammy Webber on bass, Bjorn Petersen on drums and Johnny Williams on keyboards will be in action after some very successful appearances around town in recent weeks. Castle was very excited about this move and feels that the group will give the audience just what it wants to warm them up for the main act. This singer, known by many as the “Al Jarreau” of South Africa needs very little introduction to local fans with a career that spans from performing in cabarets in the legendary Goldfinger Lounge as a teenager

to forming some of the top groups of the 70s and 80s like Free-Wind and Feather. “We’re looking forward to this gig,” he said. “Our fans will see another side of what we can do when it comes to a concert situation like this.” V Booking for the concert is at Computicket.

Learners, staff proud of long history of excellence GARY VAN DYK The roses have been blooming at Rosewood Primary in Bonteheuwel for 50 years, and are still going strong. One of the major strengths that the school is proud of, is that teachers tend to stay there, with seven of them at the school for more than 30 years. Principal Fahema Meyer is one of them with 37 years at the school, and she pointed out that the foundation for the prestige of the school was laid down with its first principal, the late Abdullah Brown when the doors of the school opened in 1963. “He served the school for 15 years and under his proficient leadership, the character and ethos of the school was established,” she said. “In 1978, he was succeeded by William Truter who continued to build on and consolidate the structures that were put in place, and he stayed with the school until his retirement in 1995, proving that longevity that we have at this school.” Meyer, who took over the reins in 2010, felt that what works at the school is that they are blessed to have dedicated, loyal and committed teachers who want only the best for their learners. “These educators always believed and still believe that each child is special. They continually strive to develop the child holistically, thus they arrange regular educational excursions to places of interest, as well as special activities in which learners,

their parents and the community participate. “Part of our success is that we are involved with extra-mural activities that range from arts and culture with participation in various music and dance programmes, to sport and various environmental programmes.” The school also plays an important part in the community which surrounds it. They participate in anti-drug and anticrime campaigns, organise marches for peace and human chains to promote safety in the area. “Our learners regularly visit the Lilyhaven Home for the Aged where they interact with the senior citizens and hand out fruit baskets,” added Meyer. They have a number of events planned for the rest of the year to celebrate but they will be kicking it off on Saturday 8 June with a Anniversary Back to School dance that will be held in the hall of Modderdam High School. There will also be a reunion high tea in June, a talent show featuring learners in September, a debutante ball in October and a thanksgiving service in November. Tickets for the celebration on 8 June are R30 with entertainment provided by exlearners from the school. It will be starting at 15:00 and you can bring your own platters. V For more information about the celebration call the school on 021 694 7790, Patricia Arries on 072 392 7321 or Charlene Amos on 072 19 444 02.

As dit maar só was!

– Dankbare tannie V A solution to parking illegally in bays meant for disabled people is to just park right behind it, get out and go do your shopping, go and have a cup of tea/coffee then go back to your car. I guarantee you, that person will not park there again. – Harry V Stiklandstasie se kaartjiekantoor is al tyd gesluit. – Jokkies V My sympathy to Mr Mostert (Metrorail attack). Sadly, this conduct has become typical of too many officials who use their power to abuse citizens, presumably to boost their own egos. – Sick of it V Hoekom kan die staat of munisipaliteit se verkeersafdeling nie optree teen die groter bestuurskole met uitspattigge hoë pryse nie. Die studente dop baie. Help!

“Get rid of unwanted pregnancies.” Dit maak my woedend! Ek wil so graag optree teen Doctor Mandwa, maar voel my hande is afgekap! LEIGH HANCKE Kraaifontein Die publiek word aangemoedig om onwettige en aanstootlike plakkate by wetstoepassing en die metropolisie aan te meld by 021 812 4663 of 021 596 1999 sodat reëlings met die relevante stadsdepartement getref kan word om dit so gou moontlik te verwyder. Stand up and stop the rot that is crime Referring to “Polisie vat nie blaam vir hoë misdaad, TygerBurger, 15 May), I would like to comment on our crime situation in this country. We moved from the southern suburbs to Kuils River about six months ago, I love it here. Our neighbours, well those

close to me, are very nice people, most of them work during the day. I am a housewife and we agreed to exchange phone details. If anything happens I would firstly contact the police, any strange cars or people in our road I would do the same. We had a burglarly not too long ago, the owners do not greet let alone give you a glance, they had the audacity to inquire details. With that kind of attitude one does not want to do anything for such people. What I am trying to say is your neighbour is the closest to you, do not judge people because of the colour of their skin, make an effort to get to know them, we are all South Africans. To curb the crime lets work together, stop complaining and blaming the police for every freaking thing. Today I just heard on the news they are so short staffed. Let’s look at the bigger picture, get out of your comfort zone and stop this rot, stand up for what you paying for. LYDIA SISSING Kuils River

Ek was só bekommerd oor die man.

MARIANGELIQUE ROBBERTS Epos

Respect parking bay for the intention I feel people need to respect the bays at shopping centres for what they are. Each time I try to park in the moms and tots parking bays with my new baby, I see that reps and other people park in these bays. Even government branded cars. I have spoken to these people and told them that you need to be either be a pensioner or a mom with a kid, to be able to park there. What they don’t understand is that one has a pram, and numerous baby goods that accompany bringing a tot to a mall. You also want to avoid them being in wind or rain, especially newborns. What really irks me is when people other than moms and pensioners, park here, like lazy housewives with teens, reps who just “pop in”, etc, and you see folk park there and there is no kid in the car. Chilli Boys chipper about their league race THOMAS CAROLUS Chippa United secured their place in the Absa Premier League play-offs when they came back from a goal down to beat AmaZulu 2-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon. It was a result that ensured the Chilli Boys have a say in their own destiny, with a chance of survival via the promotion/relegation play-offs. “We’ve done everything we could,” the Chippa United coach Mark Harrison said. “Our last six games, we’ve won three and

drew three and I don’t think you can ask for more. “In the end that’s only enough to take us to the play-offs but with the confidence and the character in that squad, we’ve got every chance of staying in the PSL now.’’ Chippa United will now join the second and third placed National First Division clubs in a three team league style competition that will decide who the 16th team is in next year’s Absa Premier League. Harrison added that they will now go all out to win the play-off and retain their status in the top flight league, with the Englishman

banking on their form and experience to keep them in the top league. Usuthu took an early lead through Bongani Ndulula, but the Cape based side replied after the break through two well taken penalties from substitute Brent Carelse. The opening goal arrived in the fourth minute when Njabulo Manqana burst into the box from the left before forcing a low save from Tashrique Goldman; Issa Sarr then tried to clear the lines, but Ndulula was able to deflect the ball into the net. However, the Cape side came back into the match three minutes into the second half

when they were awarded a penalty as William Twala was brought down by Tapuwa Kapini in the box. Carelse who had come on for Welcome Qalanto at half-time, stepped up to take the spot kick and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom right corner, sending Kapini the wrong way. The visitors were then awarded another penalty in the 75th minute. Carelse took the responsibility again and tucked the ball past a diving Kapini and into the bottom right corner of the net to secure maximum points for his side.

Girls also enjoy a game of rugger

The girls of Northerns RFC from Elsies River are making their mark in women’s rugby and involving local schools in their programme to introduce the sport to youngsters in the area. They recently received some support from a local business who has donated kit to the junior teams. Jodeleen Esau, from Norwood Primary, tries it out while, standing from left, is Nicolia Wynand from Cravenby Primary, Candece Williams from Elswood, coach Lillian Fredericks, Danny Gertse from the sponsors GVG Building and Civils, Sherlin Williams and Shannon Plaatjies, both from Elswood. Bellville proe ’n sege SAREL BURGER

Dit was ’n goeie wipplankstryd, waarin Bellville se be-

Ajax just clear of relegation THOMAS CAROLUS Ajax Cape Town ended their season on a high note when they clinched a 3-0 victory over Golden Arrows in an Absa Premier League match at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Urban Warriors, needing a point from their last match of the season to steer clear of the relegation zone got off to a great start when Khenyeza slotted home the opening goal as early as the ninth minute of the game. A good passing move down the right

As gevolg van die Stormers-wedstryd eerskomende Saterdag op Nuweland, is net enkele spanne in die Tygerbergstreek in aksie – en wel reeds Vrydagaand (tuisspan eerste): Helderberg t Belhar, Schotsche Kloof/ Walmer t Bellville, NNK t Hands & Heart. flank, starting at right back with Cecil Lolo ended when Khama Billiat played the ball to Khenyeza who made no mistake from close range. The game came to life in the 72nd minute when Losper scored from close range from Khenyeza’s cut-back. Khenyeza finished off the afternoon with his second goal on the day, scoring from a Lance Davids cross to secure all three points on offer.
