SHARING: TREE PLANTING

True exchange TANDYLEE MARINUS

“T

he true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.” A legacy that will be left behind through the carefully nurtured and blossoming relationship shared by three schools. On Friday 15 March, pupils from Eerste River Secondary, Stellenbosch High School and Graf-Rasso Gymnasium in Fürstenfeldbruck, Bavaria in Germany, were brought together for a tree planting. The tree planting took place at Eerste River secondary, to symbolise the strong relationship which the three schools share.

Lionel Hoffman, teacher at Eerste River secondary and project co-ordinator, was approached by Jan Odendaal, the former area manager of the district, who wanted to initiate an exchange.

Opportunity Lionel, at the time saw this as an opportunity to partner with Stellenbosch High School. “This is to open our doors to any other schools, especially former model C schools,” he said. Lionel, who visited Germany in 2012, met and arranged with the principal of GrafRasso Gymnasium, during what would be

the trial period of securing an exchange visit to South Africa. The exchange was made possible, although parents of the German students did not want their children to visit South Africa, because of the current crime situation. Jan said that, “One of the most important focuses is to bring privileged schools to Eerste River Secondary, by bringing different cultures together, so that the learners can learn from one another.” Through this visit, Lionel also hopes that it will create a new perspective on the Eerste River community, as a developing area and to steer focus off crime. FROM PAGE 1 “We are situated in an area where you find most of the time the focus is on crime, especially when you open the newspaper. “I hope that they go home with a new perspective. It would be great for the community to see something positive for a change,” said Lionel. The principal of Eerste River secondary, Kurt Anthony and educators Robert Pfaudler and Silvia Orth, of Graf-Rasso Gymnasium, together held talks, whereby they briefly discussed and compared flaws in the education system. Speaking about this Jan added that “one thing that is needed in schools is leadership in education. “What is lacking in principals is showing respect towards colleagues and learners.” The partnership between the schools, also strengthens the relations between the Western Cape and Bavaria which has been ongoing for the last 18 years. Christine Maree, head of English and German at Stellenbosch High school, spoke passionately about the exchange and relationship she has built with Eerste River Secondary. “From the first day the children met, they

shared a communal goal, which was amazing. It’s a window to another culture,” said Christine. She hopes that it will create new-found friendships between the pupils, encourage them to make career choices abroad and build confidence, despite South Africa’s past. By proving that children from privileged and underprivileged communities can come together. “I became aware of how hospitable and generous South Africans are. “That we share a passion for the country and can unite for one communal goal and the development and creation of opportunities,” she said. As an art focus school, the pupils of Eerste River secondary spoiled their guests with a stellar drama piece, showcasing their talent. Robert Pfaudler, head of the English department at Graf-Rasso Gymnasium, spoke kindly about the politeness, attentiveness of learners and hospitality they received. This initiative hopes to give Eerste River a big boost and is not only a small project, by opening a window of different cultures to young people.

Pupils planting their trees together as a sign of friendship, are from left, Julie-Ann Philips (Eerste River Secondary), Teresa Heid (Graf-Rasso Gymnasium) and Carey-Leigh Daniel (Stellenbosch Hoërskool).

More than 20 rugby players from the Vodacom Cup rugby squad, together with their managers and coaches, visited the orthopaedic ward at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital this week, bringing with them toys, books and Stormers flags. The burly rugby players went from bed to bed, spending time with patients aged from three to 12. The young patients, many of them with broken arms and legs in braces and casts, were clearly excited and recognised some of the players, several of whom have played for the Stormers. “I love the Stormers. I watch them on TV,” said six-year-old Anga Skota from Khayelitsha, while four-year-old Dylan Kyle Pietersen, held court as he told several players how an unhinged door had fallen on his leg. He has to have his leg suspended in a brace for several weeks. Rising rugby star, Gerbrandt Grobler, said the visit had been as worthwhile for the players as it was for the children. “It’s been a very special visit. It brings you down to earth. I’m inspired to play my absolute best for children like this, and not only for the big stadium crowds.” Several players remarked about the care shown by the nurses and staff at the hospital. The Tygerberg Children’s Hospital works in partnership with Stellenbosch University in offering specialist care to children. About 16 000 babies and children are admitted to the hospital every year. “We really appreciate the visit. It’s a boost for the patients as well as the staff. It shows that people care – and that makes the world of difference,” said hospital manager, Andrea Jacobs. Vodacom Cup team manager, Cassiem Barnes, said the visit was part of the team’s community outreach programme and they looked forward to future visits.

Galas will uncover talent Lifeguard Richard Damons gives a helping hand to Allison Gertze during her kickboard event on Saturday.

The City of Cape Town’s Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department hosted a community youth swimming gala at the Elsies River Swimming Pool on Saturday. Four teams of 30 children, between the ages of nine and 14, who regularly utilise the Parow Valley, Parow North, Elsies River and Ruyterwacht swimming pools participated in the event. Their training was facilitated by lifeguards and swimming pool fa-

cility officers over the past two weeks. This gala forms part of the Sport, Recreation and Amenities Department’s Learn to Swim programme, which is hosted throughout the summer season each year. Swimming events like this provide an ideal opportunity for federations such as Western Province Aquatics to identify and harness future talent from the youth who participate in these programmes.

Traffic headache TAMSYN COERECIUS “As a law abiding, tax paying citizen, I have a right to demand better road infrastructure,” says Aladdin Speelman, one of the motorists complaining about traffic in the Kuils River area. Aladdin, a resident from Highbury says it takes him approximately 30 minutes to get from Highbury Road via New Nooiensfontein intersection, to get to the Stellenbosch Arterial Road, which is shorter than 500 metres. “As residents we feel as if we are being throttled by traffic in Kuils River as there is no single route that you can take to work without being stuck in traffic,” he says. Richard Bosman, executive director of safety and security acknowledges that the three exit routes from Kuils River, which include Van Riebeeck Road, Stellenbosch Arterial and Amandel Drive are all congested causing motorists to create illegal lanes. He adds that the city’s traffic services noted that Van Riebeeck Road has various intersections in close proximity where the longest delays are experienced. In his response to complaints he says that it was requested that pointsmen carry out point duty at the R300 (N1 side off-ramp) intersec-

tion to try and relieve the congestion. Traffic officers will continue to focus on the other intersections, preventing the illegal creation of lanes. Tracey Demas who lives in Kuils River also complained to officials. She says that her travelling time which should be a maximum of 30 minutes can often take longer than an hour. An anonymous resident is furious, because she believes that her complaints are falling on deaf ears. She suggests that Amandel Road be widened. She says that the biggest congestion is the bottleneck at Amandel and Gladioli roads behind the Engen service station. She adds she’s concerned for motorists who take risks due to heavy levels of frustration by being stuck in normal traffic. Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater says that two main projects are under way. These include the construction of Saxdown Road from Bottelary Road to Van Riebeeck Road and the first phase interchange onto the R300 from Bottelary Road. “This first phase interchange would have ramps to the north onto the R300 and would provide an alternative route for motorists from Kuils River,” says Herron.

Social workers visit CWA TANDYLEE MARINUS Two worlds collided this past week, when Howard University made a visit to the Community Women Action centre (CWA) in Eerste River. The CWA is an organisation which has a desire to facilitate the inclusion of women from all religious and cultural backgrounds. Howard University School of Social Work students have been visiting the organisation for the last four years. The purpose of their visit is to implement one-on-one talks with women who have been affected by abuse, by providing them with counselling sessions. Project co-ordinator for the organisation, Joan Mouton said: “When something bad happens, you think that it only happens to you. But it’s easy to overcome through a healing process.” These group sessions are done by students from the university, who are accompanied by their professors. “People are scared to go to the trauma offices or the Department of Social Development. Working with Howard, we learn to think out of the box,” said Joan. The centre, which has seen development and change since the last visit by Howard University, offers skills development, B&B facilities, a function venue, and brass, marimba and belly dancing classes. The skills development, focuses on the surrounding communities which include Kleinvlei, Blue Downs, Mfuleni and Happy

Valley areas. This is to uplift the community with job creation and economic development through tourism initiatives such as this. The progress of the organisation is also monitored through these visits by Howard University, updates, current happenings and new developments. Cudore Snell, professor and dean at Howard University, who has been very involved, spoke humbly of the relationship they share with CWA. “Their vision and mission of working with people, ties to the mission of social and economic justice and empowerment. Especially for black women,” said Snell. For the students, it is a learning process through observing and taking the life lessons, for which they will eventually receive recognition for. The 24 students brought along, are exposed to the social development culture within Cape Town in order to learn from the world and create a global perspective. “The students receive academic credits, they have to keep journals and write papers. This so that they can become better social workers in the USA. It is to create an understanding of the cultures of the world and parallels between United States history and South African rights,” Snell said. Sandra Edmonds Crewe, associate dean, professor and director at Howard University’s Multidisciplinary Gerontology Centre accompanied the group on the excursion.

The Howard University students (USA), together with members of the Community Women Action organisation in Eerste River, during their recent visit to the facility. PHOTO: TANDYLEE MARINUS “The students are exposed to others and so there is a mutual benefit. We hope to give back to the community. “We believe empowerment allows us to see women engage in self-help,” said Sandra. The students were treated to a lunch, a

tour around the facility and a presentation for those visiting for the first time. They were also exposed to how the organisation is impacting the community, whereby they willingly asked questions to better their understanding of the organisation.

Recycle, or we bury ourselves in waste ANDRÉ BAKKES South Africans face many challenges on a daily basis, so many tend to switch off when they hear about strategies aimed at securing the future for our children and grandchildren. Recycling is one of those issues. Why should we recycle? Imagine 500 rugby fields of rubbish, some already piled about 30 metres high and some increasing in height about 2,5 metres a day. That is roughly the pictures of the City of Cape Town’s landfills at present. Ward 1’s councillor, Sakkie Pretorius, feels particularly passionate about recycling and urges everyone to get on board. He’s been recycling for years and he claims it is “absolutely worth the effort”. The City of Cape Town is moving ever closer to getting residents to recycle their waste. During the interview he often quoted out of the biannual environmental newsletter of the city entitled Enviroworks. It sends out a stark warning, “Waste can turn the planet on which our grandchildren will live into a toxic rubbish dump,” and then defines waste and how to go about disposing of it. According to him the Bellville, Durbanville and Kraaifontein areas are a few steps ahead of Parow, Goodwood and surrounds regarding recycling. This is mainly due to the fact that residents in the latter suburbs have to drive further to recycle (all the way to the modern Kraaifontein Waste Management Facility). This is the first integrated waste management facility in South Africa and is able to handle up to a thousand tonnes of waste a day. V For more information on recycling go to www.capetown.gov.za/enviroworks.

Light goes on for visually impaired

GARY VAN DYK A light has been lit for visually impaired pre-schoolers in the community. Last week the Athlone School for the Blind in Bellville South was proud to announce the opening of their Zisukhanya Early Childhood Development Centre for blind and visually impaired pre-schoolers. “Zisukhanya, means to bring light in isiXhosa,” said Patricia Scheepers, head of the psychology department at the school. “By starting this centre we endeavour to bring light into the minds of the affected child from a very early age. “Research has shown that there is a need for early childhood intervention in education for children from birth to six years and there is a significant difference in academic success when children are exposed to enriched and stimulating environments. “Most of the mainstream ECD centres in our communities are not equipped or

trained to accept children who are different, as a result the majority of our learners are left out in their already deprived world.” The ECD Centre is the first of its kind in the northern suburbs of Cape Town and has been made possible as a result of funding from the Steadman Trust. Currently the centre has an enrolment of seven visually impaired 3 to 5-year-olds, some of whom have multiple disabilities. A multidisciplinary team headed by Dr John Philander is on board to ensure that each child receives the best possible educational intervention geared towards his specific needs. A parental support programme is also under way to ensure that parents receive the necessary psychological support and skills required to understand and manage their child’s disability. You can contact the school by phone on 021 951 7816.

Rocketing from obscurity Can a car guard leap from looking after cars in Long Street to stardom? This Friday that journey could begin for the Singing Car Guard, Alen Abrahams from Kalksteenfontein who has become a bit of a YouTube sensation since his comic renditions of some famous Michael Jackson tunes caught the attention of the world. This Friday he takes to the stage and the organisers of the show, Lifestyle Events International, have dubbed the show “Searching for Alen”. Alen and guest artists James Bhemgee, Karen Kortjé, Lloyd Cele and Melissa Allison will be in action at the auditorium of the His People Centre at N1 City. The Singing Car Guard was discovered in recent months when his YouTube hits Meisie, Ek het Stinkblaaie, Pam, Kerrie en Dissie Ekkie went viral, and 500 000 people watched the videos in the span of only two weeks. With these songs he adds a spicy local flavour to some international pop hits.

Songbird Alicia Keyes’ Girl on Fire is transformed into the deliciously wicked Ek het Stinkblaaie whilst Michael Jackson’s Bad becomes Pam, a song about Cape Town transvestites, and Will you be There gets spiced up as Kerrie, a song about a household too poor to have meat in its curry. The concert organisers have gone all out for Alen who will have the privilege of being backed up by musical director Camillo Lombard’s orchestra. The rest of the evening belongs to some of South Africa’s greatest artists. James Bhemgee, Karen Kortjé, Lloyd Cele and Melissa Allison will wow the crowds with their hits as well as cover versions. The Searching for Alen concert takes place on Friday 22 March in the Main Auditorium of the His People Centre at N1 City, Cape Town. Tickets range from R115 to R165. The latter price applies to seats in the Golden Circle. Tickets are available from Computicket.

Sax man also supports good causes

LOUISA STEYL

OGILVY CAPE TOWN 56684/GW/DA/E

After supporting some of the biggest local music names, saxophonist, Hiram Koopman, is now striking out on his own. Hiram got his first sax, a gift from his father, when he was just 11 years old. “I had the opportunity to play with my dad and my granddad,” he says proudly. He started playing regularly at church and says: “It’s a good place to grow.” He went on to start playing jazz with different artists, before moving on to writing his own music. Over the years, Hiram has played with everyone from Wikus van der Merwe, to Benjamin Dube and Elvis Blue. He is also a member of Take Note, Emo Adam’s band. “I always wanted to be a musician,” Hiram says, adding that being able to play with different musicians has

broadened his musical influences, which he says is reflected in his solo work. Hiram would much rather talk about his community work though, and the caused he is evidently passionate about. He is an ambassador for the Faith Fund, an organisation run by Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof, that deals with educating farm workers about Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) and helping those already affected by FAS. “It was started to help these children,” Hiram says, pointing out that there are very few educational facility for children with FAS. “It’s something that you can prevent and we just try to help them and put facilities in place,” Hiram says. Another cause close to his heart is Down’s Syndrome awareness.

Great he is, as he hits the gospel big time LOUISA STEYL “There will always be an uplifting message in my music.” So says young Tony Joshua, or Tony J as he as known on stage. He will be sharing his gospel message at the Bellville Civic Theatre from 26 to 28 March when he performs his Great I am concert. Tony Richards was raised in Villiersdorp, before moving to Bellville in 2005. He finished his Tony Joshua high school career in Cape Town, and went on to join gospel bands like Prophetic Joy and Restoration. He describes his childhood as tough, and it was while performing at a ladies’ tea that he met Marcia Willoughby, who decided take him under her wing after receiving a word of knowledge from the Lord. Marcia owns Jukelo Entertainment and the company enrolled him at Riana van Wyk Music School. “There are a lot of young art-

ists with talent, but they don’t have the financial backup,” Tony says, adding that Jukelo opened many doors for him. Last year Tony won seven trophies in the Star Search Talent competition and also released his first single, “Life in Reward”. Since then, he has shared the stage with big names like Neville D and Idols winner, Karin Kortje. For his Great I Am concert, Tony will be performing with a full band. Tickets for the show cost R120 and include bus transport from various pick up points around Cape Town, a snack box and a copy of Tony Joshua’s CD. To book call 021 913 1416. Tony’s new single “Life in Reward” can be downloaded from his Facebook Page; TonyJ or at www.reverbnation.com under TonyJ.

Exciting stuff as FNB UWC take it FNB UWC’s goal of winning this year’s Varsity Shield is back on track after a resounding 36-13 victory away to FNB UKZN Impi in Pietermaritzburg on Monday evening. In what was described as a do or die encounter at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Peter Booysen Sports Park, UWC came out with guns blazing with centre Justin McKay touching down early in the first half. Flyhalf Freddie Muller was on target with the conversion before scoring a neat dropgoal to make it 10-0 in just 15 minutes. The Impi responded when prop Sizwe Khubeka scored a try with Juandre Small converting to make it 10-8. Peter De Villiers’ side were not done though, and McKay scored his second try and Muller knocked over the extra two points to make it 18-8 going to the break. After half time UWC were more determined with Denzel Willemse going over before Muller made it 26-8. The KwaZulu-Natal side tried to come back with a try by Juandre Small but Muller dashed their hopes when he scored a penalty to make it 28-13. Kenwin Weiner sealed the bonus point for the visitors with the last try of the game and Muller kept his 100% conversion. The UWC clash against FNB Fort Hare can be regarded as a “final before the final”.

Vulsel gee vleis geur

Special car designed for disabled at CPUT

LOUISE GROENEWALD

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is on the move with disabled driving. This facility is taking a giant leap towards disability inclusivity and unveiled a prototype of a car adapted for people living with disabilities during the Nicky’s Drive Expo which took place there earlier this month. The car was designed by a group of students from the faculties of Informatics and Design and Engineering. This pioneering project was headed by Professors Mugendi M’Rithaa and Oscar Philander, who have been working closely with CPUT’s Disability Unit and Nicky’s Drive, a non-profit organisation that funds car adaptations for people with disabilities. Mugendi says the university subscribes to the concept of universal design which is about designing for everyone, including people with disabilities. “The CPUT students have been working with Nicky Abdinor to develop the sophisticated technology she uses to drive. Her physical limitations only allow her to drive using a joystick hydraulic steering system with her right shoulder.” The expo showcased driving opportunities that are available for people with disabilities.

So maak mens: Voorverhit oond tot 160ºC. Marathon of a lifetime soon John Persents, from Belhar, will be boarding a plane to London later this year, to take part in the major marathon there. As part of an on-going commitment to creating meaningful change in the lives of South Africans, leading financial services provider, Virgin Money, will send Persents and two other lucky runners to London to participate in the 2013 Virgin London Marathon. This charitable initiative, undertaken in conjunction with Runner’s World magazine, will give these talented athletes, hand picked from underprivileged communities, the chance to demonstrate their skills on one of the world’s biggest stages. Over and above being one of the most popular fixtures on the global marathon calendar, The Virgin London Marathon, which takes place on 21 April 2013, is also the world’s largest charity event. Thousands of participants from around the globe are encouraged to run in support of a chosen charity, with this forming an obligatory condition of entry. It was this charitable spirit that inspired Virgin Money’s decision to create lifechanging opportunities for local runners. “The change that can come about as a result of an event like this is momentous, and we really wanted to play our part in extending this goodwill on a local level,” explains Heidie Aitken, brand manager of Virgin Money. “Rather than running a lucky draw style competition as we did in 2011, we decided to embrace the essence of the event this year, and offer opportunities to those who might never have been able to participate otherwise.” This will be the first major international marathon for Khubulani Zondo, John Persents and Meshack Ndhlovu, who were select-

John Persents, who hails from Belhar in Cape Town, looks to use this opportunity to inspire fellow athletes in his own community. “Being part of the Virgin Money team will help me to show my fellow runners that anything is achievable with hard work and dedication,” says Persents, who coaches wouldbe runners in his community, including his two sons. “The London Marathon is every runner’s dream, and it’s important for those of us in disadvantaged communities to know that dreams can come true.”

BAANFIETSRY: STRAWWE STRYD VERWAG

WP wil wéér kroon dra

D

Duisende gaan die halfmarathon, 10 km-wingerdroete of 5 km-pretstap aandurf. FOTO: LEON STEENKAMP

Urban Warriors under pressure to win THOMAS CAROLUS The 2013 Metropolitan Premier Cup takes place from 27 March to 1 April, at Erica Park in Belhar, with Ajax Cape Town once again the favourites to march off with the crown. The competition has grown from humble beginnings into a global event. Ajax Cape Town are desperate to shed a reputation for falling short when it matters most, having failed to justify their favourites tag in the last four editions. The last

time they won it was in 2008 when they beat Bloemfontein Celtic 6-0 in the final. Just what effect this pressure to win will have on the “Urban Warriors” this year remains to be seen, but there must be a fear within their camp that could be stifling. This is a side that has in the past not performed well when under pressure and the added attention at this tournament might feed more into their insecurities and selfdoubt. The team’s coach is anxious for his team

get off to a flying start against Belhar Spurs, with powerful Harmony Academy, and Atlantis Leeds to follow. In a way, despite their poor form in the lead up to the competition, Spurs probably present the greatest threat to Ajax, based largely on their home advantage. Ajax Cape Town have the ability, but have not looked convincing since their excellent run in 2008. Certainly they have the squad to win, and go into this tournament as favourites.
