Four families are in mourning and a community is calling for action after the deaths of another four young people. Just after midnight on Monday the peaceful sleep of residents of Geranium Street in Uitsig was disturbed when gunshots rang out. The shots were coming from a wendy house at the back of one of the houses and when it stopped, four young lives were destroyed. According to police reports they

responded to the complaint and on their arrival they found four males lying on the floor inside a wendy house, with gunshot wounds to their heads. Three of the four victims were declared dead on the scene, while a fourth victim died on his way to hospital. The deceased are Marcelino van Rooy (17), Jaydene Paul (17), Farodien van Niekerk (19), and Bradley Kaffers (21) all from Uitsig. While investigations have not established a motive for the killing, friends and family of the deceased

are confident that the killer(s) were known to them. “There is no way that they would have let a stranger in,” said Shelton Witbooi, a close friend of the four. “You can see that the door is not broken, and they would have first looked out of the window to see who was at the door before they let them in. “I still can’t believe that these innocent lives have been taken from us,” he said. Yesterday morning friends and neighbours were still streaming into the home to pay their respects to

the family. Noeleen Luddick is the mother of one of the deceased Marcelino “Massie” van Rooy, who still can’t believe her loss. “God is my strength during this time, but I still don’t know why they were shot in this manner,” she said. “All four of them were very close friends and they were not involved in anything that should have ended up like this.” Luddick explained that when they heard the shooting they immediately called the police who responded immediately. .

Killing of four young men ‘not gang related’ . From page 1. “They told us to stay in the house and we expected the worst when they arrived because there was no movement coming from the wendy house. “Initially we thought it was only Massie and Farodene, because they were together for most of the afternoon with Farodien celebrating Labarang. The others must have joined them during the night.” Pastor Ivan Waldeck of the Western Cape Community Outreach was visiting the fami-

ly and condemned the killing, and similar incidents that had been taking place across the Western Cape. “While we don’t know the reason behind this killing the loss of these lives is tragic for the families. “While the police are doing their best to find the killers, we as the community must also play our part in finding the perpetrators. I am calling on those who know anything about these crimes to call the police. Together we can fight crime but we must work to-

gether,” he said. Another close friend that did not want to be named confirmed that the four were not involved with gang activities. “I got out of jail three months ago and knew them very well,” he said. “They were still very young but I always spoke to them about not getting involved with gangs because it could lead to disaster. This murder is a mystery to all of us,” he said. At the time of going to press police had not made any arrests in relation to the murders.

Mfuleni police have tightened the grip on suspects found to be guilty of crime, especially crimes against women during the past Women’s Month. Capt Nomathemba Muavha said: “This month is a month dedicated to females, therefore as the police we will ensure that we squeeze the space of those who abuse drugs, as the result of using them leads to an increase in domestic violence.” Muavha said thus far for the month the three police stations under the Kuils River cluster, which includes Kleinvlei, Kuils River and Mfuleni have arrested 1 135 suspects. These successes says Muavha were

The ink has hardly dried after the Curiosity rover landed on Mars, and now South Africa is taking her rightful place in space science by sending her first CubeSat, ZACUBE-1, into space. The satellite will leave our shores at the beginning of September on its journey to Russia, via the Netherlands where it will be integrated with other CubeSats from across the world. It will then be launched into space in November. The CubeSat has been developed by postgraduate students of the French South African Institute of Technology (F’SATI) at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) in Bellville and will be used for space science experiments. Its activities will be monitored by the ground station at FSATI’s premises and it is the first South African nano-satellite to be launched.

verander.”

Winterbaadjie ’n lekker verrassing CARMEN JACOBS

Police message: Have some fun! Fun was the order of the day at the event held this past weekend in Wesbank. The Mfuleni police this past Sunday embarked on a play day with the children of Wesbank. In Wesbank, an area which has become synonymous with gang violence, poverty and crime, police are perceived to be crime fighters, but during this event, police were there to have some fun. Capt Nomathemba Muavha said: “It was all joy and happiness for the community of Wesbank today,

when they were woken up by the police who were there to play and interact with the children.” She says the aim of this day was to create a conducive environment for the women and children of Wesbank. “Western Cape police created a memory that will last for a long time in the minds of the children of Wesbank,” she said. Approximately 1 300 children were reached through partaking in different sporting codes namely soccer, tennis, netball, physical fitness and a show by the K9 Unit

The children and some adults showed a great interest in the dog sniffing demonstration by the K9 Unit. Capt Branton Paulsen and his narcotics dog, Jesie B2230, deliver a demonstration.

which entailed a demonstration of a dog sniffing for drugs in different places. Muavha thanked the good partnerships the Mfuleni police have established with the City of Cape Town’s, Sport and Recreation unit, Centre for Justice, Wesbank Clinic, Schools, Wesbank Sport and Recreation, Community Police Forum and the overall community, which she says has led to the success of this playdate. “The community of Wesbank could not express enough appreciation for the initiative, as this meant for couple of hours their children were not involved or exposed to the everyday criminal activities,” Muavha ended off by saying.

Children could show their skills in the obstacle course, created by the Mfuleni police for them to participa te in.

Sport enthusiasts could participate in the different sporting codes.

The day’s activities were made even more fun with feel good music as Sergeant Warren Fradie from Mfuleni police station was the DJ for the day, mixing the tracks.

Joseph Johannes from Eerste River won the first regional round of the Shoprite Checkers boerewors competition held at Checkers Protea Heights.

The best boerie in town... Three locals were announced as part of the 32 regional winners in the Shoprite Checkers Championship Boerewors Competition. The first group of regional rounds were held at selected locations countrywide on Saturday. Joseph Johannes from Eerste River took first place at a regional round held at Checkers Protea Heights. Pieter Olivier from Kraaifontein came in second, and Dennis Gilbert from Brackenfell earned third place. Joseph won R1 200 Shoprite Checkers meat vouchers and gift hampers from Coca Cola, All Gold and Simba, and will also compete in the provincial round which will be held on Saturday, 15 September. In the regional round competitors from Brackenfell and surrounds had to bring and braai 1 kg of their own secret recipe boerewors, which was judged raw and cooked. “The independent judging panel consisting of representatives from the SA Chefs’ Association had a very difficult time,” said Lise-Marie Greeff-Villet from Shoprite. The remaining regional rounds will take place on 25 August at selected stores countrywide. The competition ends on Saturday 6 October when 10 provincial winners get together at Sun City for the grand cook-off for the 2012 Boerewors Crown. The 2012 winning recipe will be on the shelves of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores by 12 October. Visit www.championshipboerewors.co.za.

Dictionaries donated to local schools In a mission to combat the shortage of learning materials in schools, Kalahari.com donated dictionaries to schools around Cape Town, at the Blue Downs Primary School on Thursday 16 August. This initiative was started to inspire young learners through books. “We know there is a textbook and learning material shortage in the country’s primary schools and we wanted to make a contribution towards easing that problem,” says Liz Hillock, head of marketing at Kalahari.com. Present at the ceremony were 12 of the 19 recipient school principals which include Parkdene Primary school, Blue Downs Primary School, and many others. According to the World Economic Forum, South Africa’s education system is ranked 133rd out of 142 countries. “We want to continue to help out wherever we can, not only through tangible donations, but also by introducing bright young minds into the exciting world of technology,” says Hillock.

Know what your kids are doing ESMÉ ERASMUS

“Parents must stop being like ‘dinosaurs’ and learn how to tweet, Facebook and BBM, if they want to keep a watchful eye on what their children are up to,” said Dr John Buswell, CEO of Rape Wise, at a presentation for parents of Kenridge Primary School last week. Rape Wise is an organisation of legal and healthcare professionals that have trained about 35 000 people in youth issues over the last eight years. Buswell, a father of two sons and one of the founder members, is specifically responsible for the development of the school and ParenTeen foundations, Rapkids and Rapteens. “Parents today deal with huge issues in keeping their children safe at home,” he said. “You won’t allow your teenage daughter alone with a boyfriend in her bedroom, because you know from experience something can happen. “You lay down rules as a result of experience, but when it comes to cyber, you have no experience to relate to,” he said. “Parents must get involved with issues regarding cyberspace. You cannot stop communication in your home. Let your children teach you how to BBM and tweet. “You can only keep an eye on them if you are part of it. You must learn BBM language to check on them,” he said. There should be certain rules, like never agree to meet people you have met online,

Buswell said. “Your children must understand that cyber space is a public space. Whatever you put on there, is for everybody to see. “Never put personal information on the internet. Never give your password or any information that can allow other people access to you account,” he warned. “If your child changes her cellphone screen or turns it off when you are nearby, check it out. If your child deletes the browsing history on the computer, take the computer away. It means your child has something to hide,” he said. Buswell said parents must have a collection point in their house for all cellphones, laptops and iPads before bedtime. “All the nonsense take place after hours,” he said. Dr John Buswell “Don’t give access to cyberspace too early. Don’t tempt them. Sooner or later their friends will show them the tricks. “One of the biggest challenges is pornography,” he said. Buswell suggested parents must create a “time out” environment in which their child may tell them anything without being punished.

He said children should not spend more than three hours a week playing games. “It has an affect on their learning abilities. We see fatigue at schools and violence is also directly linked to gaming. “A child that is playing games instead of doing his homework, or sulks if his gaming device is taken away, or rushes home and cannot wait to play games, is showing signs of addiction,” he warned. “You are not your child’s best friend or buddy. Your purpose is to guide, lead and educate. Your children must abide by your rules.” “The stuff we dealt with children in the past in early high school, is now dealt with in primary school already. Last year there were 28 000 victims of rape of 12 years and younger in South Africa and that is only the reported cases, he said. Out of 12 000 girls 51 % were sexually active by the age of 15 years. Also, 27 000 teenage pregnancies were reported, of which 34 % were Grade 8 girls, he said. “There is also a huge drug problem in the Western Cape. Drug rape is also big in South Africa. ‘The average victim is 15 years old,” Buswell said.

Hospital now has ICU for newborns and moms REYANA STEYN

A life-saving pilot project for mothers and babies has been launched by Tygerberg Hospital in Parow in conjunction with Philips Healthcare. The main objective is to start a clinical trial to create a blueprint of emergency management obstetric care units. This will increase the capacity to manage high risk pregnancies and complications in the Obstetric Critical Care Unit (OCCU). The announcement was made on Thursday at the Radison Blu Hotel in Green Point. “At Tygerberg Hospital doctors often have to treat very sick and critically ill mothers and every year there is an increase in the rate of complicated admissions,” says Dr Eduard Langenegger, head of the Obstetric Critical Care Unit at Tygerberg Hospital. “The resources in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) across the Western Cape are limited and pregnant patients sometimes have to compete with surgical, medical and trauma cases for admission to an ICU. Although an OCCU was established in 2006 in the hospital the demand on the OCCU and general ICU beds has increased substantially.” Langenegger says Tygerberg Hospital saw the potential for more patient admission and treatment in high care and intensive care units if there was an opportunity to provide the equipment needed for a step-down unit to assist the mothers. Patients in need for advanced monitoring could be admitted to an acute post-natal stepdown unit, thereby increasing OCCU and general ICU capacity. “Once a patient has been admitted to the OCCU or ICU, they are treated and monitored closely,” explains Langenegger. “Only when stable can the patient be discharged to another unit for further treatment. The obstetric department did not have funding to purchase monitors for the stepdown unit and therefore observations were done manually,” He says the Philips Healthcare team assessed the impact that a step-down area could have and they decided to fund a central nursing station where vital observations could take place; providing beds, installing monitors and training the medical staff. “With the capability of transferring patients that are stable, but still in need of continuous monitoring to the acute post-natal step-down unit, we can increase our admission rate for patients that require critical care,” says Langenegger. “This would not have been possible without dedicated training, monitors and a central nursing station, and we hope that this project can serve as a template for other hospitals in South Africa,” he says. “Recognising that there is an urgent need to improve healthcare access in the rural areas of South Africa, Philips began exploring possible opportunities to provide technology, know-how training and maintenance infrastructure,” says Jose Fernandes, district manager, Philips Healthcare Southern Africa. Fernandes says to improve healthcare in rural areas, they needed to first investigate the challenges and requirements in urban hospitals.

This is going to be one exciting clash – coach THOMAS CAROLUS

All roads lead to Salberau Park on Saturday when Central AFC face Trinitarians in a Super League match of the Northern Suburbs Football Association (kick-off 15:30). In this game you have two good teams coming up against each other and it’s never easy to predict the end results. “I can tell you, this is going be one exciting clash,” says Giles Julies, the Central coach. “It’s going to be tough for both teams to get the results they are looking for.” Central are picking up form with every game they play as they come alight in the Super League. They have scored 67 goals, which shows that they are clinical in front of goal. Another good thing about them is that they have kept clean sheets in most of their games. Trinitarians, on the other hand, have not been at their best. There were high expectations before the start of the season and they were strong favourites, and a loss on Saturday would be a major failure for them. The pressure will certainly be on

them to produce the goods and go on to win their first Super League trophy. Personally, I have my money firmly placed on Trinitarians, who I feel will get the better of Central on Saturday afternoon. Central also play a lot on the wings and can be dangerous when coming from that side but it’s also going to be tough in the middle of the park. Both teams have good players in the middle who can create opportunities upfront. Trinitarians should watch out for striker Trevor Meiring, who is the top scorer for Central, and he is a striker that you can never leave alone in the box. The Trinitarians defence has not been tested and Meiring will surely be looking to do so in this match. There is no denying that Trinitarians also have a good side with youth playing a big role in their pace going forward to give them lots of options in attacking positions. In another game Wayside Wanderers will be desperate for a victory when they host United at Cravenby. Wayside lost to Riverside Rangers in their last outing and have gone 20 matches without a win.

All the big guns come out to play All the “big guns” are expected to compete on Saturday at the BBSA Western Province Bodybuilding Championships at Parow High School. The top athletes at the show will receive their provincial colours and go on to represent WP at the national championships. Pretoria will host the national competition from 5 to 8 September. Although it’s not possible to say who is going to enter until the morning of the competition, Heinrich Vos is likely to enter – and be a sure favourite should he enter. The registration and weighin is from 08:00 to 10:00. Pre-judging starts at 11:00, tickets are R50. The main show starts at 19:00 and spectator fee is R100. – (Sarel Burger)
