Witness claims Humphreys ‘was remorseful’

Families have no mercy CHILTON MELLEM

“She is a liar!” family members sneered at the criminologist who was called as a witness in mitigation for sentencing of convicted taxi driver, Jacob Humphreys. The sentencing hearing commenced at the Western Cape High Court on Monday. Claire Wolff, who has an honours degree in criminology from the University of Pretoria compiled a pre-sentencing report, which proved to be very unfavourable with the family members of the victims. This report was drafted after interviewing Humphreys, family members of the victims as well as members of the community. It was Humphreys’s first appearance in the High Court after being found guilty on 10 counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder, following the accident at the Buttskop level crossing in Blackheath, in which 10 schoolchildren were killed on 25 August 2010. The report drawn up by Wolff contained 150 questions which tried to find a motive for Humphreys’s actions. It spanned various aspects of his life such as his hobbies, health, religion, his education and family background. Wolff claimed Humphreys was remorseful about his actions and was well loved by his family and the community. She said the media made him look bad and slandered him with names like “child murderer” and “Jakkals”. However, family members were not convinced. They said he did not even come to apologise to them. Wolff told the court that despite Humphreys growing up with an abusive father, he tried to live his life differently as he did not want to be like him. Family members were angered so much by Wolff’s testament that during a 15 minute recess, a few of them verbally confronted her. When Wolff apologised, one family member sneered, “Ja, I bet you’re sorry!” Family members who were interviewed for this report, claimed that they were unaware that the report was in mitigation for Humphreys. “I am extremely angry. The criminologist phoned us under false pretences. She told us she was from the court to find out our feelings,” said Ursula Pedro, mother of Jason Pedro. She vented her anger further by saying, “The man was found guilty, he could enjoy Christmas with his family but we had to go to a grave. Nobody gave us counselling, our children are dead, it’s not fair.”

Police warn cellphone theft is on the rise CHILTON MELLEM

Reports of cellphone theft have been on the increase during the last two weeks according to the Kleinvlei police. Most of these victims have been attacked in Forest Heights and Malibu Village. These incidents occur mainly among

school children when walking on their way to school. W/O Annacletta Mothoalo, spokesperson for Kleinvlei Police Station said that children are distracted when they are playing on their cellphones. “Firstly, their attention is not on their surroundings when they are looking down into their phones. Secondly, they cannot hear

anything in their surroundings when they have their earphones in their ears,” she said. Mothoalo advises everyone not to expose valuables such as cellphones or iPods. Another helpful hint is to walk in a group and not alone, as this will reduce the risk of being isolated by a criminal and being attacked.

Highspeed drama in the streets ANDRÉ BAKKES AND MARANA BRAND VAN HULSTEYN

A remarkable sequence of events led to the arrest of two suspects for armed robbery and hijacking on Thursday. Three suspects allegedly stole more than R350 000 in cash from a father and his son in Montague Gardens. Then they fled in a Volkswagen Polo, hijacked a truck, collided against three other vehicles and finally jumped into a taxi before the two were arrested by Elsies River police. The third suspect managed to escape and the money has not yet been recovered. Parow, Elsies River and Goodwood police all joined in the outrageous chase, which started in Parow. Goodwood Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis, sets the scene when he states: “At about 11:15, two men were robbed at gunpoint of R350 000, after they withdrew the money in Montague Gardens.” They were robbed of the money by three suspects – at least one armed with a 9mm

pistol – in Riley Street, Parow. Lieutenant Kevin J Williams, spokesperson for Parow police, continues: “The complainant and his father pulled over at their business premises. He was still busy on his cellphone when he heard a knock on his window. He saw a man pointing a firearm towards him, while another pointed a firearm towards his father. The camplainant was instructed by the suspects to hand over the money to them.” The suspects then jumped into a grey Polo, which the complainant pursued. The suspects fired towards the complainant’s vehicle, but no one was hit. Parow Police immediately started chasing the Polo, which resulted in the suspects abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot through properties next to the road. Theunis continues: “In Elsies River three of the suspects hijacked a He & She truck in Halt Road at 11:40. By that time members of Elsies River and Goodwood had joined in.” He & She is a driving school company, and at the time of the hijacking, the instructor Jack Qangiso (43), was teaching a young man

how to operate the truck. Qangiso spoke to TygerBurger about their ordeal: “A man came to the client’s window and said he must jump. I said ‘No, man. Why must he jump? We are not going to take nonsense from you.’ Then he pulled out a pistol, cocked it in front of us and I told the client to get out. Two other men jumped from a house next to the road into the truck.” The fleeing suspects apparently hit three other vehicles, which included a Golden Arrow bus, as the driver was having trouble controlling the four-ton truck. According to Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut, spokesperson for the provincial police, it was fortunate that no-one was injured when the truck hit all and sundry. Traut says: “In Oxford Street the suspects decided to abandon the vehicle in an attempt to escape being arrested, and jumped into a minibus taxi, but their luck ran out when the officers arrested two of the three suspects.” “The two, aged 25 and 35 years are from Philippi and Langa. They are both in custody at Parow police holding cells.” They appeared in court on Monday.

Hope for better TB remedy

Painful injections, a battery of pills that are bad-tasting, too big to swallow and with severe side-effects, as well as a stay in hospital for at least six months, may soon be a thing of the past for children suffering from multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).

Siyamthanda has made a complete recovery from multidrugresistant TB. we make these drugs safer for children? These are the things we’re looking at,” says Schaaf. Director of Paediatric Research at the Desmond Tutu TB Centre, Anneke Hesseling, says the current drugs are not designed for children, as they are far too big, difficult to swallow and taste terrible. It’s also hard to break them up to get the exact dosage. “These drugs have been around for ages. For MDR-TB, we’ve been using the same drugs for decades,” says Hesseling. Mothers like Nobuntu Mahlatshana from Crossroads would be grateful for shorter and better treatment. Her four-year-old daughter, Siyamthanda, has been on treatment for MDR-TB for 15 months.

She says Siyamthanda has been treated with great care by doctors and nurses, but that it’s been a long road to recovery. She comes to Tygerberg Children’s Hospital for regular check-ups. “She had to take five or six different kinds of pills, which I crushed every day and mixed with joghurt. She used to vomit a lot when she took them. Now that she’s well, she’s stopped the pills, but she refuses to have that kind of joghurt!” Mahlatshana is grateful that Siyamthanda survived MDR-TB through dedicated treatment. “Thanks to the doctors and nurses, she’s very strong now. She’s stopped coughing and has gained weight. She’s a happy little girl.”

Researchers working at Tygerberg Children’s Hospital could make a breakthrough in the way they treat these children with a five-year study that has just been started. Researchers from Stellenbosch University’s Desmond Tutu TB Centre, situated at Tygerburg Hospital, are hoping that new studies will ultimately improve treatment for the increasing number of children in the Western Cape that have contracted MDR-TB. “We’re looking at the side-effects of the cocktail of drugs children need to take, what dose we should be giving them and the interaction between antiretrovirals and TB,” says Professor Simon Schaaf, who is leading the study. About nine percent of children who display TB symptoms, have MDR-TB, a virulent form of tuberculosis that is difficult and expensive to treat. Schaaf says as long as there’s dedicated treatment, the prognosis for a cure for MDRTB is better for children than for adults. But the drugs are not child-friendly and can have side-effects ranging from severe nausea to loss of hearing. Over 20 percent of children on MDR-TB treatment become deaf or are left with some loss of hearing. “We need to tailor the treatment to children. We know the right dose for adults to get to the right blood levels to be cured of MDR-TB. But what dose do you give a twoyear-old? “We’re looking at different children on a different combination of drugs. What are the genetic considerations? Are there some kids who are more prone to hearing loss? How can

Some of these Sponsors include Foure Wine Farms who supplies the church with vegetables, Food Bank, BP Garage in Malibu Village and Shoprite in Eerste River. Pastor Mervin Jansen, who is the CEO of the Haven Social Concern at the church, said that after so many years the social needs of the community are still not met. “We are still experiencing unemployment, poverty and problems with regards to housing,” he said. There were a few VIP guests who made a turn, one of which was ward councillor, Wilma Brady, who also said a few words. She expressed her delight in the initiative that the church was taking and made people aware of the fact that government cannot do things like this alone. She encouraged the congregation by telling them that to feed a hungry child, you feed a nation and by educating a child, you educate a nation.

Valentine’s Day is a time for warm hearts, but for the New Life Community Church in Malibu Village, receiving a container to warm tummies this winter seemed more fitting.

Grow Smart gearing up again CHILTON MELLEM

If you can read this sentence, chances are you learnt to do so at school and know how important having a good education is. According to the Western Cape Education Department’s most recent systemic testing of learners in Grade 3 and 6, only 30,4 percent of Grade 3s and 31.5 percent of Grade 6 learners achieved the pass requirement for literacy. This had led to the Grow Smart Literacy Competition, an initiative of Growthpoint Properties which will be hosting their third annual competition at Spine Road High School on 21 April. Grow Smart aims to improve the literacy of learners from an early age. The competition is open to learners from Grade 4 to 6. Three learners are then chosen from each school to make up a team. The learners are then tested on spelling,

their understanding of the word and evaluated in the use of the word in a sentence. “The competition grows the learners’ self confidence and boosts their self esteem,” said Jewel Harris, assistant regional manager at Growthpoint Properties. The number of participating schools has grown every year and they gained another 40 schools on board this year to participate. This boosts the figure to 168 schools from around the Western Cape. Each participating school will be competing to win prizes to the value of R200 000. Grow Smart has made a point of it that they would not give out cash prizes but rather use the prize money to help improve the winning schools. Last year’s winning school, Beacon View Primary School, received a facelift with their prize winnings. The School received a new coat of paint, gutters were repaired and one of the participating contestants

won a scholarship to Chrystal House, a private school. Magda Esterhuizen, principal of Beacon View Primary School explained that the learners prepared themselves thoroughly for last year’s competition. “When we selected our three learners, the other learners carried on preparing themselves for the next competition. We made use of the Grow Smart newspaper to prepare our learners. The newspaper talks to kids on their level. They have made it colourful and it’s very interactive so parents can get involved as well. The newspaper not only teaches learners literacy but touches on other subjects as well like maths and history,” Esterhuizen said. This year, Ryan O’Connor, from Kfm will be taking centre stage as quizmaster. Visit their website at www.growsmart.org.za, follow them on Twitter or Facebook.

Coach Clevin Hendricks added that the participants thoroughly enjoyed the two days and were very happy to receive a Blackburn Certificate in Sports Leadership at the end of the course. “We were also happy to get the donation of sports equipment because it will help me, and them, to present better soccer coaching sessions. “This course showed that our boys do have leadership skills and when they were challenged to present a mini tournament they excel.” Julia also added that their services include setting up business meetings for sport clients, arranging visits for international academics, applying for scholarships on behalf of individual clients, recruiting potential students for international study, destination and event management, work experience programme, exchange programme, setting up sports camp programmes, designing itineraries for sports tours, and more. “Apart from Blackgburn we also have working relationships with College Prospects of America, Southern African Society for Cooperative Education, as well as various schools, colleges and universities. “We also want to serve as a marketing platform for sports teams and sponsors.” For more information about the organisation Julia can be contacted on 072 389 3582 or email enquiries@cposa.co.za.

Health check in Happy Valley CHILTON MELLEM

Residents concerned with their health had a free check-up in Happy Valley on Friday, thanks to the organisation, Global Vision of Hope. People from the area came to the Happy Valley Civic Centre to have various checks done. Some of these checks included blood pressure, sugar levels, eyesight and a TB screening. Global Vision of Hope has been running their programme since 2005 in partnership with the Department of Health. Judy Borchards from Global Vision of Hope said that HIV and TB seemed to be the biggest diseases af-

fecting the Blue Downs and Eerste River areas. However, the concentration of these diseases seemed to be greater in Happy Valley and Kleinvlei. The services were offered free of charge to anyone in the community who wanted their health checked. There were 15 home-based carers who went from door to door recruiting people for check-ups at the civic centre. The organisation usually works on a referral system, where patients are referred to them by day hospitals, Eerste River Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital. Once on their referral list, home-based carers will come to the patient’s house. They will perform basic health checks like sugar levels and blood

pressure and make sure the patient is taking their medication. Community members appreciated the service and took full advantage in having their health checked. “I think this is something very good, not everybody has money to go to these places (hospitals). Especially the old people. Now they don’t have to walk very far for the nearest clinic,” said Alma Steward, a resident from Happy Valley. Global Vision of Hope also provides physiotherapy to patients who suffered strokes and Borchards said that one can see the difference as people start to move their limbs again. For more information on how you can be helped, contact Judy Borchards on 021 904 0800.

Jazz on the Lawns also fundraiser event GARY VAN DYK

The harmony of local music will be giving local organisations the chance to raise some funds when the G-Spot hosts another Jazz on the Lawns festival on Saturday 24 March. After a very successful event last year, event organiser Calvin Peters said that he felt that the venue wanted to give organisations in the community a chance to use the event to raise funds for them. “Over the past few years this event on the music calendar has become very popular, not just for the music but for the harmony that exists in our communities where people can come together and celebrate what the Cape Flats is really about. “With this event we are opening our hearts to schools, sports clubs, churches and even individuals who are raising funds for their projects to contact us to find out how this event can benefit them. “Apart from this event our premises in Epping are always available for charity fund-raisers because we know there are many projects out there that are not getting any financial assistance for projects that are going for the benefit of the disadvantaged in the community. “Our main focus is on the youth in our areas whose lives are being destroyed by negative influences like drugs and gangsterism in their neighbourhoods. “With youth in mind our festival also focuses on the talents of the youth in our areas because we want to show the world that there are youth out there who are doing something positive with their lives,” he said. Some of younger talents that he will feature includes a young group from Mitchells Plain called Just Listen, students from the Cape Music Institute, Afro Touch, Marimba Vibrations and The Little Giants. This event will also feature some big names on the local scene that include Alistair Izobell, Richard Ceasar, Karen Kortje, N2, and then there’s a special group of local legends, Majitas, that features Victor Khula on sax, Errol Dyers on guitar, Spencer Mbadu on bass, George Werner on keyboards, and Soi Soi on vocals. The event will be held at the Bevcan Sportsfield in Epping, and tickets are R100 for adults if booked before the event, (R120 on the day of the event), children between 10 and 15 pay R50 and under-10s are free. Organisations who would like to find out how this event can raise some funds for them can contact Peters on 082 950 8625 or email calvin@cjrecordings.com.

Buses for train wheel shortages As of Monday morning past, Metrorail was forced to institute an auxiliary bus service between six stations on its Kraaifontein/Bellville route to assist its embattled commuters. The shortage of capacity is mainly due to the failure of suppliers to meet the agreed maintenance plan for train wheels. The major supplier of wheels is Transnet Rail Engineering (TRE). Metrorail’s announcement comes in the wake of a shortage of trains to adequately cope with demand on the northern route. Trains on the Northern Line clock the highest kilometres of travel, requiring more frequent wheel maintenance and replenishment. The shortage of trains in the north also necessitated a delicate reallocation of trains from other lines to meet some of

the most crucial demand for capacity. Thirteen trains have been sent to various suppliers for light and heavy maintenance. Some are anticipated to be back in service as early as next week with the remainder expected to return to service by the end of the month. Metrorail has procured the services of all the companies in South Africa able to perform this kind of work; the largest with most capacity being TRE. TRE has been unable to meet the demand as agreed in the last 12 months. The sheer volume of wheels requiring overhaul has already prompted TRE Western Cape to double shift working to deliver sufficient stock to meet Metrorail’s maintenance demand. Regional manager Lindelo Matya conceded that the slow pace of delivery remains top of his agenda

City ‘will manage’ passenger rail service Transport minister S’bu Ndebele has announced the intended transfer of control over Metrorail’s passenger rail services from Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) to the city. “Given that we regard Metrorail (passenger rail) as the backbone of our public transport service and given its fundamental role in achieving our economic and social inclusion imperatives, it is extremely important for the city and for our residents that there is a substantial improvement in the quality, frequency, reliability and safety of this service” said the city’s mayoral committee member for transport, roads and stormwater, Councillor Brett Herron. “It is also vital that we are able to plan and implement our transport plan in an integrated way. The transfer of the rail subsidy to the city must however come with full management authority,” said Herron. The city approached Ndebele last year with a view to conducting a due diligence study of Metrorail operations in Cape Town in order to be able to make an informed decision about requesting transfer of the rail subsidy, and to be able to present a viable business plan for future city management of passenger rail. “We are now in the process of finalising the tender. “We expect to advertise for the appointment of a team of experts who will conduct a thorough investigation,” said Herron. The due diligence study is supported by an inter-governmental project steering committee with representatives from the national department of transport, Western Cape provincial government and the city. The estimated time of completion of the study is November.

Lemon and ginger cookie icecream These melt-in-the-mouth lemon icecream studded with sugary ginger cookies are simply irresistible, so never be caught without this ice-cream in your freezer! 1 x 385 g can condensed milk 150 ml (½ cup + 5 tsp) lemon juice 250 ml (1 cup) fresh cream 1 x 200 g packet of ginger biscuits (also known as Ginger Nuts or Ginger Snaps) Mix the condensed milk and lemon juice together until smooth. Whip the cream and fold into the condensed milk mixture. Roughly break the ginger biscuits into smaller pieces and gently fold into the mixture. Pour into a 2-litre ice-cream container, cover and freeze. Take the icecream out of the freezer 5 - 10 minutes before serving and allow to soften slightly at room temperature – makes 1,25 litres/5 cups. . Dalene is a food stylist and recipe developer. People’s Team down Wits 31 GARY VAN DYK

Engen Santos celebrated their first win of the second half of the season when they deservedly beat Wits University 3-1 in an Absa Premier League match at the Athlone Stadium on Saturday night. Following their defeat last Wednesday against Moroka Swallows, Santos was keen not to make the same mistake twice and con-

cede early. As a result, Wits held more of the ball in the opening stages but in non-threatening parts of the pitch. There was only one team in the first half as Wits dominated proceedings from the outset, while Engen Santos battled to find their rhythm and had very little to show for the first 45 minutes. From the start of the match it was evident this was a different Santos that took the field. Santos’ wealth of experience and

depth were definitely on display and gave a clear indication why “The People’s Team’’ do not deserve to be near the bottom of the PSL standings. For the first half and much of the second, Eleazar Rodgers caused endless havoc with flick after flick putting his strikers through on goals. Wana was unlucky not to score after Rodgers neatly put him in a scoring position early in the opening stanza. It was Erwin Isaacs that was put

through in the same manner, but once again Emile Barron was on form, conceding a corner. The highlight of the half came from the resulting corner, Tyren Arense latched onto a poor clearance before hammering home a thunderous volley to give Santos a 1-0 lead. After the break, Wits applied waves of pressure as Santos sat back and absorbed it all. It wasn’t long before their chiselling at the Santos defence would pay off,

Stormers’ untimely injury crisis LIAM MOSES

AN injury cloud has enveloped the Stormers ahead of their much-anticipated opening Super Rugby clash against the Hurricanes at Newlands this Saturday. No fewer than five of the side’s first team players have either been ruled out of the game or deemed unlikely to start, after picking up injuries over the past two weeks. Last week, the management team were hit by the news that tough lock Rynhardt Elstadt, who only returned from a long-term injury layoff during the pre-season, had damaged ligaments in his knee and could be out for as long as three weeks. Elstadt was an integral part of the Stormers side that won the South African conference during the 2011 Super Rugby season, adding muchneeded grit and physicality to a forward pack that has long been considered as one of the softest in South Africa. Elstadt’s place in the starting line-up will now be filled by either De Cock Steenkamp or youngster Eben Etzebeth, whose performances have become more impressive with every game he plays. Nuggety hooker Deon Fourie was also ruled out of the match after he suffered a broken hand during a

Nasief Morris’ underweighted back-pass forced Touray the Santos goalkeeper to leave his line and left the posts open for Zongo to make the score 1-1. However, Wits’ celebrations were short-lived as Santos’ saviour Isaacs, immediately responded, displaying a classy finish after he found a cross from Sonwiqi. It was however Rodgers’ replacement Gert Schalkwyk, who put Santos at ease, scoring the third following a goalmouth scramble.

warm-up match against the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth, on Saturday 11 February. Fourie may not have been the first choice hooker, as Tiaan Liebenberg was more likely to start, but the Stormers will miss his energetic performances. The stocky hooker has become one of the team’s most potent attacking weapons. The Stormers may be without his services for another five weeks. Other players who are in doubt for the season opener are Springbok centre Juan de Jongh, athletic loose-forward Nick Koster and diminutive utility-back Joe Pietersen. De Jongh took a knock to his jaw recently and could miss the game completely or start from the bench, meaning that Bok wing Bryan Habana or youngster JP du Plessis would have to step into the number 13 jersey. Koster is in doubt due to a knee injury, but the return of first-choice eighthman Duane Vermeulen and the emergence of Nizaam Carr as an option will lessen the damage done by his unavailability. Pietersen is suffering from a hamstring strain and could also miss the match. Pietersen’s versatility makes him an important asset to the side.
