Fun ideas for the last week of holidays:

Tour our beautiful city

Last fun before school starts

Take a deep breath before the cold reality of a new school ye ar hits home! Relax by burying yourself in the sand like Lohan Botha (8) and Marvin April (12) before you bury yourself in homework. Enjoy the mo ments when someone deci des to throw water in your face, because soon it might be a teacher who throws you with a piece of chalk. 2013 is here and there’s no better pla ce to stock up on happy me mories than on the beach!

Hoërskool Fairmont By dié skool beloop die skoolgeld R18 750 per jaar.

Hoërskool Melkbosstrand Vanjaar sal ouers R11 450 opdok vir skoolgeld by Hoërskool Melkbosstrand, waar dié bedrag verlede jaar R10 700 was. Malan In Bellville sal ouers by Hoërskool D.F.

Marius Prins: Ek het vir my 13jarige dogter ’n rekenaar gekoop.

Xolisa Domo: My tweeling is 11 jaar oud.

Ek wil dit aanhou doen as sy ouer is. Kinders voel altyd gemotiveerd as hulle weet hul ouers staan agter hulle.

Christa Bredenhann: My kinders is 18 en 21.

Big planning for Backtoschool Research conducted around back-to-school (BTS), has yielded hundreds of thousands of responses, indicating that parents have strong opinions about back-toschool issues and are prepared to go on record with them. PEP, which ran the research using its free messaging service, says 66 % of parents would like their schools to help them pay less for uniforms by standardising the uniform – i.e. a white shirt, grey trousers/skirt instead of clothing in special colours – and 56 % of parents said it would be easier to manage if everyone had the same uniform style. As the country’s largest schoolwear retailer, PEP was pleased to see that parents are generally well-informed about their rights: the majority (70 %) of respondents know it is against the law for any school to turn away a child for not wearing the school uniform, but an astonishing 59 % of people said they know of an incident where a child’s been turned away from school for not wearing the correct uniform - this would be against the law). Sixty-two percent of the sample is aware that the government has

produced guidelines for a standard school uniform (and perhaps this is also why they would like schools to opt for a less expensive uniform). While 63 % said their school already helps them by selling second-hand uniforms, over half the sample (of more than 100 000 people) said they would like their school to help them more with selling secondhand uniforms. The findings also reveal key behavioural buying patterns by cash-strapped parents: nearly three-quarters of parents give BTS items to their kids for Christmas (72 %); they also start planning and saving for BTS long before Christmas (63 %) and research prices and promotions ahead of time (54 %). Quality is very important to parents when selecting uniforms (69 %) – one reason for this could be that they pass down uniforms within their family (66 %) and even more so to their friends’ children (70 %). Half of all respondents buy schoolwear and shoes a size bigger to allow their kids to grow into them and 70 % say they spend more than R500 a year on school uniforms.

The salty sweetness of these little Oriental meatballs is balanced by the freshness of the ginger. A squeeze of lemon juice accentuates all the flavours. Perfect party or picnic food! Makes 35 mini-meatballs You need: . 2 slices of white bread . 500 g lean beef mince . 15 ml (1 tablespoon) freshly crushed garlic . 15 ml (1 tablespoon) freshly grated root ginger . 45 ml (3 tablespoons) soy sauce . 30 ml (2 tablespoons) brown sugar . oil for frying . salt to taste . thin strips of red, green and yellow peppers to garnish . diagonally cut spring onions to garnish

. lemon wedges to serve To make: Break bread (do not remove the crusts) into very small pieces. (Fresh bread is too difficult to crumble – it is easier to break it.) Heat a little oil in a frying pan and fry meatballs over medium heat, turning often. Drain on paper towels. Taste, and sprinkle with salt if necessary. Serve hot or a room temperature. Red Bull contest all about ‘big airs’ Kiteboarding will be pushed to its limits in the Red Bull King of the Air contest, taking place in Cape Town next month. The event promises to be a “mega airtime” contest with radically high jumps, various tricks and kite-loops combined with style, height and speed. “It’s going make a big impact on kiteboarding once again. With the Red Bull King of the Air we’ll have the world’s best riders come out to battle it out in Cape Town’s extreme winds,” says Ruben Lenten, a formidable Dutch competitor.

Vars of geblikte vrugte in natuurlike sap is daaglikse kos.

’n Paar idees is salm of tuna in fonteinwater, laevet-kaas of -smeer, eier, skyfies koue vleis soos ham, kalkoen of hoender, ’n boneslaai of gerasperde wortel, blaarslaai of tamatie. As jy beskuitjies of koekies wil inpak, probeer droë volgraanbeskuitjies of ryskoekies met joghurt, hummus of groente-doopsouse.

Sights from a different viewpoint City Sightseeing (known for its red open-top buses) recently launched a new addition to its “red” family offering both tourists and locals a new, more personalised tour around the peninsula. Jana Bekker and Cecilia Hume joined tourguide Eugene Galley for a shortened version of the City Sightseeing Sidecar tour. I close my eyes and fill my lungs with a breath of fresh sea air, but only for a few seconds, too afraid to miss even one of the amazing views en route to Chapman’s Peak and Signal Hill in Cape Town. For the umpteenth time this afternoon, I am not disappointed.

I am surrounded by beauty in one of the most popular cities in the world. Our ride is uber cool too - a Changjiang CJ750 motorcycle with a sidecar. Cecilia and I met with Eugene in front of the City Sightseeing kiosk at the V&A Waterfront and after discussing a few details about the route and strapping on our helmets, the tour starts – one of us in the sidecar and the other on the back of the motorcycle with Eugene. The trip takes us along Beach Road through Mouille Point, Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Clifton. At Maiden’s Cove we pull over to admire Lion’s Head and after borrowing a box of Lion matches from some workers in the area, Eugene shows us how this part of the mountain deserves its name. The tour then continues through Camps Bay, past the luxury Twelve Apostles Hotel and famous surfing spot Llundadno en route to Chapman’s Peak. The road takes us over the famous Suikerbossie pass, which is known as the toughest part of the Cape Argus Cycle race, and I feel a renewed bout of respect for the each cyclist who has ever conquered this steep part of the route. We ride through Hout Bay and up to the Chapman’s Peak View Point, where we pull over for a while to admire the view and then swop seats. On our way back, the comforting sea breeze suddenly becomes a bit chillier as we meander along the Twelve Apostels mountain range. Not to worry though, all the sidecars are equipped with leather jackets, ready to muzzle the windswept bite that might rob your ride of further enjoyment. We then head up Signal Hill where Eugene shares some long forgotten history and some interesting facts about Cape Town and Robben Island, like the latter being used as a de-

fence and training facility during World War II. Way back, not long after the first settlers had landed in the Cape, Robben Island was used to graze live stock to prevent the indigenous people, the “Strandlopers”, from stealing the farmers cattle, Eugene elaborates. This is just another advantage of The Chapmans Peak this tour - your viewpoints is one of own personal guithe stops enroute. de ensuring both PHOTO: CECILIA HUME an interesting and intimate exchange while getting to know the Cape Peninsula. And Eugene, who claims to read up on as much information and history of the Cape as he can find, is full of some very interesting facts. “You never know what type of tourist you’re going to get,” he explains. “The one might want to know about the Cape’s history, the other might be interested in property or even flowers.” Often during the ride he will slow down for a few seconds to quickly share some information or point out a piece of history. This is Cape Town sightseeing at its best and the sidecar tour as choice of transport ensures that extra exhilaration one requires every now and then. The full tour takes you on a journey to Cape Point via the original route taken by the settlers and then back via the Atlantic coast

line, including stops at Boulders, Cape Point, the Chapman’s Peak viewpoint and, if you feel like a coffee or drink, in Camp’s Bay. The tour takes about five hours and covers a distance of 150km. There is also a ninety minute Blouberg Sidecar Tour. Since the Sidecar tour is a private tour it is essential that you pre-book your adventure. Bookings can be done at City Sightseeing Tour Office outside the Two Oceans Aquarium, by phone or on-line. NUUS NEWS

TYGERBURGER | BELLVILLE Woensdag, 9 Januarie 2013

The thrill of shark cage diving

Despite much controversy, Shark cage diving is often a tourist’s first port of call when they arrive in South Africa, and with fully booked tours on a daily basis, very popular among tourists and locals alike. Cecilia Hume joined White Shark Projects on one of their trips to find out what the hype is all about. “Go down!” echoes the voice of one of the crew on White Shark Projects’ orange catamaran, Shark Team, as he pulls a rope tied to a few fish heads towards the cage. The five divers inside the cage grab onto a red bar, take a deep breath and then pull themselves under the water, pressing their faces as close to the front of the cage as they are comfortable with, to see one of the ocean’s most amazing creatures nearing the cage in stalk of the bait. On the boat 15 other divers who all paid for a chance to see a Great White up close, leans over portside to watch the 4m long shark surface as it tries to grab onto the bait. Shrieks of excitement echoes from the cage as the divers surface again. “Wow, did you see how big it was!” The crew member standing at the top of the cage throws the bait out again to lure the shark back to the cage, while another is chumming the water with the hopes of keeping this Great White (and hopefully a few others) in the area long enough for all 20 divers to see from the cage. “We don’t feed the sharks,” explained the skipper during his briefing over breakfast earlier in the day. “We are not allowed to, we simply use bait to lure them to the side of the boat that we are working on.” The day starts out with breakfast at White Shark Lodge, the group’s home base in Kleinbaai (two minutes from Gansbaai). For

See a Great White up close. those who don’t feel like driving all the way, a shuttle service is available from Cape Town and Hermanus. Those who want to make an adventure of the trip can organise for helicopter transport from Cape Town. Divers are fully briefed on the day’s proceedings and safety regulations (and of course there is the indemnity form everybody makes you sign these days) before taking the 100m walk to the small harbour to board Shark Team. You are once again reminded that the crew have no control over the sharks. “We might see five, we might see nothing, we also can’t say how long the shark will stay, so when you get your chance to get into the cage, take it.” If you’re lucky you might get to see more than just a shark. As Shark Team heads out to sea, two Southern Right Whales make their presence known by slamming their tail fins down on the water in the distance. The sound of the catamaran’s engines co-

mes to a halt for a few seconds as the skipper answers his cell phone. A quick conversation follows with the skipper on another shark boat about to make it back to shore. There are sharks, and we can take over their spot. Another five boats, all from the various other shark cage diving operators in Kleinbaai, wait in the vicinity of where Shark Team finally throws down its anchor. While the crew lowers the cage into the water and ties it to the boat the first five divers start wrestling with their very thick wetsuits, as the skipper points out a shark next to the boat. On its fin is a tag that looks like the ones used by the Ocearch team (Shark Men), who were documenting sharks in the Cape earlier this year. As the first group of divers take their turn, the excitement starts to build and we’re overcome with adrenaline by the time we enter the cage. With two sharks circling the boat at that stage the wait isn’t long. “Go down,” the crew member’s voice echoes abo-

ve us. And you need to be quick, because within a split second this great white beauty swims past - a few centimetres from the cage. For those few seconds time seems to slow as you stare in awe. Then it’s back to the surface for some air, a short wait, and then you take the plunge again... After coming face to face with about five or six different sharks (apparently luck was on our side that day) and everyone who wanted to have a second turn in the cage, Shark Team starts heading back to shore. The cage is left behind for the next group of adventure seekers who want to get up close and personal with a shark. Back at the White Shark Lodge a hot bowl of soup (and other snacks) awaits and the video that was shot on board Shark Team, is shown. This video can of course be bought. The screening is followed by a brief overview of the conservation of the Great White Shark and how one can get involved. Shark cage diving is a must. If you consider yourself a lover of the ocean or care about sharks, then this should be one of the top ten items on your bucket list. White Shark Projects’ standard rate is R1450 per person, but contact Liz at bookings@whitesharkprojects.co.za for any special rates they may have at the time. Alternatively phone 076 245 5880 or 0861 4shark(74275). V White Shark Projects are offering TygerBurger rea ders a 10% discount on a shark cage diving trip (one per mobisite user). Visit tygerb.mobi on your cell phone to download the voucher. Offer valid until 28 February.

WIN! WIN! WIN! V One TygerBurger reader can win a shark diving and viewing trip for two on board Shark Team. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to enter. Competition closes 16 January.

Elke spier, been, ligament en aar.

me is. Wonderbaarlik, ongelooflik. Bespreek by www.webtickets.co.za. Besoek ook die Bodyworlds-webblad vir meer inligting.

Learning the joys of surfing So the holiday is nearing an end, you have perfected your tan and lying on the beach is just no fun any more. Or maybe you are just looking for some last fun holiday activity... Why not take a few surfing lessons? Cecilia Hume and Ria Smith took a lesson from Mikhail Thompson at Son Surf School in Strand to find out if it really is as “easy” as it looks.

the board, then drawing surfboard shapes on the sand and explaining how to balance your board while lying down since lying too far forward will push down the nose and lying too far back will have the opposite effect. Then it was off to the water to catch a few waves lying down. Back on the beach, on our imaginary surfboards on the sand, came the standing up lessons, but after jumping up from lying down and also from our knees and also perfecting the stance, it was back to the water to catch a wave. It’s a lot more difficult than it looks, but easier than expected. The trick behind it is speed and understanding that the water actually helps you balance. If you’re going too slow, you are going to fall. Taking too long

to stand up will have the same effect. After quite a few tries and plenty of falls, the few seconds standing were pure bliss, and then the board slipped out from under my feet and my body hit the water. So, from thinking a few weeks at the beach a year is not enough time to bother, to learning how to stand up on a board in little less than an hour... Maybe after a few more lessons, investing in a surfboard and wetsuit might after all be a good idea. Son Surf School can be found both in Strand and Melkbosstrand. They have three lessons a day every day until the end of the holiday at R150 a lesson (including surfboards and wetsuits). Lessons start at 09:00, 11:00 and 14:00. For more information visit www.surfschools.co.za.

Learning to surf has always been a dream, but with growing up in the Platteland it was out of the question since a few weeks at the beach a year just didn’t seem like enough time. So of course when a recent opportunity arose for a lesson it was grabbed hands on.

It was a sunny, yet windy day in Strand as we pulled on the wetsuits provided by the surf school. Then with two really big surfboards (“it’s easier to learn on a bigger board”, Mikhail ensured us) under our arms we strolled down to the beach. The lesson was not at all what we had expected... Picture something out of a movie scene, a whole lot of surfboards lined up on the beach, surfing students on top jumping up learning how to stand and balance on the board. Well, this is not at all what we got. It never even crossed my mind that by the end of the first lesson we’d be standing up on our boards in the water, even if it was just for a few seconds. The lesson started with Mikhail explaining safety in the water and the dynamics of

Surf instructor Mikhail Thompson cheers as Ria Smith stands up on her board for the first time.

Between 5pm and 9pm, Geyser and Pool pump are not welcome Please switch them off

Between 5pm and 9pm electricity usage peaks when people return home after work. They start cooking, watching TV and bathing. All of this leads to a large demand on our limited power supply. A geyser can consume up to 39% of household power, whereas a pool pump can use up to 11%. Please help us reduce the pressure on the national grid by switching off your geyser and pool pump during peak periods. For more information please visit www.eskom.co.za/idm
