he University of the Western Cape (UWC) in Bellville, an anti-apartheid bastion, is host to a new research centre that aims to help eradicate hunger. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) last Tuesday launched this new Centre of Excellence in Food Security at UWC. “This centre of excellence is the first to be co-hosted by a historic ‘black’ university,” said minister of science and technology, Derek Hanekom. He emphasised that food security was high on the government’s list of priorities. “People remain underfed, overfed, or fed wrongly. This is where the centre of excellence is going to help a great deal,” he said, adding that in a relatively wealthy country such as South Africa, almost 25% of the population was food insecure.

Acute poverty “This is largely in the deep rural areas or former bantustans – wherever poverty is at its most acute,” Hanekom said. The centre will be run in conjunction with the University of Pretoria and headed by

Prof Julian May and Prof Stephanie Burton. May said: “Food security means all people need to have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for a healthy and active lifestyle. This centre of excellence (CoE) became the fourteenth of its kind since the inception of the CoE programme 10 years ago and is aimed at making South Africa food secure, or having food be readily available both nationally and locally so all people have access to it, Hanekom said. “Obviously, food security is a subject that requires comprehensive treatment...it involves questions of agricultural production systems, market dynamics, nutrition, people’s habits and preferences, our social security system, and so on.

Challenge “This is one reason why achieving food security is such a challenge, and why the centre of excellence approach is particularly appropriate in this case,” Hanekom said. Dr Albert van Jaarsveld, chief executive officer of the NRF, said: “According to a study released in 2013 by the Human Sciences Research Council, more than half of South Africa’s population does not have regular access to enough food. is estimated at 45,6%.” A statement from UWC said the new CoE will investigate three overarching questions: VHow the global and national food systems are changing and how this affects the sustainability, availability, access and attributes of food. VDetermining who the “food insecure” are: where they are located, what their choices, strategies and opportunities are when seeking food security, their health and wellbeing, and how these aspects change in response to the changing food system. VWhat policies, technologies, interventions and products enable access to affordable and nutritious food in ecological, economic, social and politically sustainable ways. Hanekom added that the new CoE would be bringing together experts and researchers from 19 South African and international institutions. “It will not look at agricultural productivity in isolation, but will take a ‘farm to fork’ approach to the food system.” V Enquiries to David Mandaha at David.Manda ha@dst.gov.za or 072 126 8910, or Palesa Mokoena at palesa.mokoena@nrf.ac.za or 083 494 2322 or Luthando Tyhalibongo at xtyhalibongo@uwc.ac.za or 079 880 4655.

Delay: small shops suffer ESMÉ ERASMUS

@erasmusesme

T

he go ahead for building plans to revamp the new Pick n Pay supermarket at Kenridge Centre was only approved by the City of Cape Town last Friday – over four months later than the originally planned reopening. Smaller shops, which depend on anchor tenant Pick n Pay to draw customers to the centre, have taken a knock after nothing came of promises that the new Pick n Pay Local, which took over from the 7/11 supermarket last October, would open early in December last year. They are in for a further quiet two months as the new Pick n Pay Local is now due to only reopen at the end of June. The city claims the delay came after Pick n Pay’s architect submitted incomplete plans, but Pick n Pay blame the city’s new Development Application Management System (DAMS) for the delay.

Communication breakdown According to Werner Kühn, owner of the Kenridge Pharmacy, there has definitely been a set-back in business since the previous supermarket moved out. They expected it would only be from October to December. “The worst was that nobody communicated with the line shops about the delay,” he said. Kühn is also worried about the parking at the centre once the new Pick n Pay Local opens for business. For Peter Antonopoulos of Pete’s Pizza, the lack of foot traffic is especially ominous as he only opened his pizza business in September – a month before the closure of the main tenant. “We felt it. There was a quiet period in December and definitely less feet since then,” he said. “Nobody could tell me what is happening and I cannot make plans. I brought all my staff with me, and do not want to lose any of them,” he said.

The florist has also suffered a blow. The owner, who wants to remain anonymous, said business is very slow.

Delays Izak Joubert, director of Property and Store Development at Pick n Pay, said after they signed an agreement with the 7/11 supermarket to purchase their store on 25 September last year, the 7/11 moved out by mid-October. Building plans had been submitted to the city by then. “There were certain alterations that had been done at the centre over 15 years ago that the city wished to see addressed, and this caused a delay in getting the plans for our alterations approved. Joubert said they expect to be able to open their new store by the end of June. According to Cheryl Walters, director of the city’s planning and building development management department, the building plans were submitted on 9 October but amendments were identified and it was sent back to B-Arc Africa Architects on 29 October. “The plan was with the architect for 22 days and was again resubmitted to the city’s northern district office on 20 November. It then needed to be circulated again to the applicable internal departments. “On 16 January the plan was sent back to the same architect due to a provisional road issue that the architect needed to resolve with the Western Cape government. “The plan was with the architect for another 58 days. In total, the plan was with the architect for 80 days due to the fact that it was incomplete,” she said. “Then, from 14 to 31 March, the planning and building development management department underwent a data migration process to the new Development Application Management System (DAMS) to improve efficiency. “This period was communicated to stakeholders and the submission of new applications and/or transactions requiring payment were affected,” Walters stated.

“The plan was resubmitted during this period and, while being scrutinised, it was found that the architect only indicated internal alterations and not the additional floor space for which additional fees were required. “This caused a delay with the architect.,” Walters said. “It is important to note that the City is working hard to accommodate all customers and urges all applicants to assist in speeding up the approval process by ensuring that their submissions are as accurate and complete as possible.” She said the city advises all customers to submit more detailed applications and to first arrange a pre-consultative meeting to discuss and resolve issues.

Rat’s suffering haunts Phoenix woman ANDRÉ BAKKES

@andrebakkes

Glue traps, also known as glue baits, are considered to be the epitome of suffering.

Some starve, some die from exposure, dehydration, or suffocation, and others try to chew through their own limbs. Mankind’s cruelty towards animals is undeniable. After a Phoenix resident witnessed the slow and painful death of a rodent, she is now attempting to get rodent bait banned. The resident, who prefers to remain anonymous, said: “Having witnessed first hand the suffering of these creatures, it will haunt me forever. I want to redeem myself for my bad decision to use these baits (sheets of glue).” The resident doesn’t know why there are so many rats and mice in Phoenix recently,

but she guesses that it could be the canal that was closed, overcrowding in neighbouring Joe Slovo Park or overflowing sewerage. She just knew the time had come to start ridding the suburb of rodents. She turned to baits but now she is haunted by the picture of the rat “squirminig and crying for hours until it died a painful death”. Her neighbour saw a rodent chewing off its own limb. SPCA spokesperson Lise-Marie GreeffVillet says baiting rodents is a difficult topic. “The mandate of the SPCA is to prevent cruelty to all animals, and none of us want to see even a rat experience the painful death of poisoning.” The Animals Protection Act (APA) states that a person will be committing an offence if the person “lays or exposes any poison or

any poisoned fluid or edible matter or infectious agents except for the destruction of vermin or marauding domestic animals or without taking reasonable precautions to prevent injury or disease being caused to animals”. Greeff-Villet continues: “According to the APA one is allowed to use poison to destroy vermin if you do it responsibly and take all reasonable precautions to prevent the poison from affecting any other animal (or human). However the reality is that for the layman to use poison in a controlled and zero risk environment, is almost impossible. Death by poisoning is arguably the most cruel and inhumane way to kill an animal, and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA strongly advises that more humane methods of trapping (passive trapping) and destruction be used.

Mall phone robbery spree ends in arrest MICHELLE LINNERT

nes. The suspect was brought to the Bellville police station for further investigation,” Nimb said. She said in one of the open cellphone boxes a Blue Downs PEP store’s till slip was found. “On the slip there was a telephone number that was followed up. It was discovered that this specific shop was robbed the previous night and that several cellphones and clothing items were stolen. “After further investigation it came to light that several shops in this shopping centre were robbed the previous night,” she said. Nimb said the suspect was linked to these robberies. He is a 32-year-old male residing in Phillipi. “He was arrested for this business robbery as well as being in possession of stolen property, and appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court on Monday 14 April.” Malls across the northern suburbs have fallen victim to cellphone store robberies in past months, mostly at MTN stores. Asked whether this arrest could be linked to any of the previous robberies, including robberies at Waterstone Village in Somerset West, Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River, Soneike Mall in Kuils River and a number of others since last year, Nimb said they were looking into it. “We are not certain that the crimes can be linked, but Organised Crime is investigating the possibility that it could be the work of a syndicate,” she said.

@linnertmb

A cellphone bust that started in a mall in Blue Downs ended in the arrest of a foreign national in Bellville last Friday. According to police spokesperson Captain Fienie Nimb, it was Constable Galvin Peters’ alertness that resulted in the seizure of 88 still-packaged cellphones. “On Friday 11 April at approximately 12:00, Peters, dressed in uniform, was performing crime prevention duties in the (Bellville) central business district. “He noticed a silver Peugeot in a parking area in front of a cellphone shop in Kruskal Avenue. The vehicle had no registration number plate,” she said. Nimb said Peters noticed two men of foreign nationality at the vehicle acting suspiciously. “One of the men took several small white boxes out of the vehicle and carried them into the shop. Peters backed off and kept the men and the vehicle under observation.” She said the men continued to unload the small white boxes at the shop, with one of them staying inside the shop and the other at the vehicle. “Peters called for backup and followed the vehicle to Voortrekker Road, Bellville, where the vehicle was stopped and searched. “In the vehicle a big bag with 88 new cellphones were found. The driver could not give a valid explanation regarding these pho-

Busy Easter for city cops The City of Cape Town’s law enforcement agencies had a busy Easter weekend, conducting roadblocks and stop-and-search operations across the city. At Bellville, Joe Gqabi interchange and Intercape, 284 vehicles underwent roadworthy tests. In addition, 221 vehicles were screened at vehicle checkpoints at Mfuleni and Joe Gqabi. A total of 28 vehicles were taken off the road and officers issued 1 107 fines for various offences relating to driver and vehicle fitness, among others. At a vehicle checkpoint in Mfuleni on Thursday evening a red Toyota Corolla with five occupants tried to force its way through the roadblock.

Metro Police Officers managed to stop the vehicle and a a search by the K9 unit found three hand guns, a woman’s handbag and a number of purses. Vehicle checks and roadworthy tests were also conducted at various public transport interchanges as many people headed out of the province for the Easter weekend. “The officers are to be commended for their hard work. We are making more and more drug and firearms arrests and I hope this serves as a warning to criminals that we will flush them out, one by one, no matter how long it takes,” mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said.

Part of the city’s draft budget proposal currently under review includes the restructuring of policies for rates relief to poor residents. Johan van der Merwe, head of the city’s finance portfolio committee, explained how the city policy would be structured during the next fiscal year which starts on 1 July, provided the provisional budget is accepted. “Part of the concept budget is the concept policy on indigent relief. When the concept budget is approved at the end of May, we will have concrete figures to consider for approval regarding policy for poverty alleviation,” he said. “The figures in the draft policy reflect that which can be revised after public participation process has been completed, and will be effective as of the new financial bookyear. “We care for the poor and vulnerable,” he said. He said the financial form this “care”

home composting pilot study has relieved the City of Cape Town landfill sites of 40 tons of waste in just eight months. According to James Vos, chairperson of subcouncil 3, whose household took part in the study, home composting is a no-cost and rewarding excercise. “Maintaining a garden can be costly and home-composting is a self-sustaining investment. Furthermore, rich and healthy soil is required for the cultivation of our vegetable garden, which saves us even more money in the long term,” he says. The Vos household is one of nearly 650 households taking part in the ongoing study conducted by the city. Each household has been provided with composting containers and the necessary information on how to use these. They have agreed to provide the City with monthly feedback on the progress of their composting efforts, with the data being recorded in the notebooks that were issued to them.

and our commitment to being a caring and well-run city. “Composting has numerous environmental benefits: it reduces water use by up to 70% and reduces erosion and pollution,” he says. According to the prelimenary statistics from the study, of the 1,6 million tons of waste directed to the city’s landfills each year, approximately 6 % consists of garden and organic waste from households (95 000 tons per annum), of while approximately 5 % is made up of organic kitchen waste (80 000 tons per annum). “This is equivalent to a possible average of 11 kg per household per month of garden waste, as well as 10 kg per household per month of organic kitchen waste,” Vos says.

Excited “My wife and I are excited to be part of the pilot project” Vos says. “Many people start composting for practical reasons. Composting your leaves, grass clippings, garden waste and food scraps reduces the amount of garbage you generate. “But I think there’s an even better reason to compost: it’s fascinating. In fact, once you understand the basics of how the process works, composting can be one of the most interesting and enjoyable aspects of keeping a garden. “Our food scraps and yard waste currently make up 20 % to 30 % of what we throw away. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas,” says Vos. Ernest Sonnenberg, the city’s mayoral committee member for utility services, says the study is being conducted as a result of the overuse of the city’s landfill sites.

Carbon capture When organic material is composted, carbon is returned to the soil. Mulching (the placement of organic waste over soil to lock in moisture and improve the soil condition) reduces water use by up to 70 %. Compost improves soil’s waterholding capacity, thus reducing water needs, and it improves the resistance of plants to drought. Mulches and compost reduce run-off, erosion and pollution, while compost also improves the condition of roses and vegetables in the garden. Sonnenburg is encouraging all residents to embark on making compost. He says bins can be bought at garden centres and hardware stores, but if you do not want to spend money, you can simply make a compost heap without a bin. Composting requires three basic ingredients: V Browns – This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. V Greens – This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds. V Water – Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development. “Smart Living and Recycling” was the theme at both the Leonsdale and Goodwood seniors event during the month of April.

Wastewise “The research is geared towards the city’s goal of being a waste-wise society

’n Mens loop jou steeds in enige kettingwinkel vas in ’n sjokolade-haas. Ons voel of ons nie goed genoeg is nie, ons hou dan nie by nie.

Small business feels the pinch We have a small business. We work day and night to keep our business going. Most months we earn enough for a basic living, but sometimes we do not have food on our table. I just read in a local newspaper about a company – a small business like ours – that was sued by a client for not doing the work the way the client wanted it done. The client says within 24 hours the owner of the business was there to do the job. But after it was done, he struggled to get the business owner back to fix minor things. As customers we are told to complain about everything. But, we are forced to start small businesses because we are unable to find work in our country. We have to jump at every work opportunity that comes our way. We do not always have money to go back to completed jobs, as we have to jump to the next job to survive. The business owner I mentioned had to pay a large sum back to the client. He did not pay until the client threatened with further legal action. I bet he did not have the cash to pay straight away. We also live from one job to the other, with no cash in between. Please consider small business owners’ positions. Do not fight and threaten legal action on every little aspect. We want to make you happy, but sometimes things go wrong. Help us grow and do not try your utmost to break us down. Our economy is bad and, as small business owners, we are the first to feel the impact. ANONYMOUS Email

Please pick up after your dog I have been fortunate to live in paradise opposite Amandel Close and Fynbos dams for the past 22 years. Lately, a lot of people who do not live in the area have discovered the beautiful spot. They live in Protea Valley, Riebeeckshof or Oude Westhof to name a few. There is no problem with that. They come here with their dogs – also no problem, but they let their dogs use the place as a public toilet and do not clean up after them. We never had a problem with flies, but now we have flies throughout the year. I take walks there and have only seen one woman with a plastic bag in her hand. She ties the bag over her hand and picks up what her dog leaves behind. I spoke to her and she was also upset that people just leave the dog mess behind. She said in the country she came from, people would never think of being so careless. If they did, they would get a fine. If your dog gets sick, you take him to the vet because you love your dog. So why not clean after him? If you don’t like to take droppings in the bag home, throw it in the bins provided. Come on people, bring back the magic to the Magic Forest. DANIELLE Email

land-stasie daarheen geloop. Een so ’n môre skrik ek so dat my oë tot pieringgrootte rek. My senuwees is gedaan. Ek’s hoeka op behandeling. Wat van die ander mense? CARMELETTE ROSS Epos

Circus is ‘nothing but amazing’ We recently visited the circus and were met by a handful of protesters at the robots. We enjoyed the show and it was well attended. We even had the opportunity to feed the animals, which was something my daughter will never forget. We are in full support of the circus and will always welcome them back to Parow. Maybe the people at the robots should have taken 10 minutes to see for themselves. This circus is nothing but amazing and made me think of my childhood, when we also visited the circus. Those years it was a huge event at the old Goodwood Showgrounds. Everyone dressed up, while their hotdogs and popcorn were tops! DEVON Parow

Argief werp lig op parlement

T

Iris House’s Sue on the move At their recent AGM held at the Dukes Officers Mess Cape Town Castle, the Soroptimist International Cape of Good Hope inducted their new President Trunell Morom and her new executive committee, including Sue van der Linde of Iris House Children’s Hospice as vice president. Iris House operates from Welgelegen and provides their services throughout the northern suburbs, Mfuleni and Vredenburg. This facility is committed to enriching the quality of life for special needs children and young people with life-limiting or lifethreatening conditions, and providing support for their families. Founded in 1921, Soroptimist International is a world-wide volunteer service organisation for business and professional women who work to improve the lives of wo-

men and girls in local communities, and throughout the world. Sue told TygerBurger: “I am extremely honoured to have been elected to the post of vice president. My first priority and passion will always be Iris House Children’s Hospice. There are, however, many synergies between the Soroptimist’s mission and our aims for Iris House, in particular our carer training programme which encourages women to train as community based carers and give back to their community,” she said. “I would like to encourage women in the northern suburbs to get involved in their local communities in any way they can.” V To find out more about Soroptimist International Cape of Good Hope contact Trunell Morom on 021 715 2072.

Hy is in die volksmond net as Johnny Tattoo bekend. Dit was vir my ’n groot eer toe Mister Adams my masjien vir ’n kunswerk gebruik,” vertel Donnie.

In a recent letter to TygerBurger – which took her three drafts painstakingly typed with one finger on her donated special keyboard – she tells of her illness and the effect it has had on her life. Her tale starts in Durban and ends in the Ons Tuiste Home in Bellville. TygerBurger readers may have heard of her plight in a drive to buy her the keyboard. (“Samel geld in vir sleutelbord”, TygerBurger, 10 October 2012). “I was diagnosed way back in 1993. I lived the high life for the next 15 years – a house in Sunset Beach; drove a Mercedes and a bakkie. Had four dogs, a full-time housekeeper and more. I was very happy with it all. Despite the fact that I was now wheelchair-bound, I had more symptoms of MS rearing like bladder problems, speech problems, cognitive problems.” Dianne says with the increase of these physical impediments, she struggled to run her business and home. Her partner eventually had to take over. “This was the end for me.” Dianne eventually moved in with her parents in Durban. Her house and business were liquidated by her partner.

“The sadness I felt was immense – my life, diapers, (about R500 per month), clothing all I had worked for, was ripped away from and toiletries, medical equipment such as wheelchairs and special mattresses. person can quite literally become trapped in a body that will not cooperate.” A team of doctors, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech therapists need to help maintain the patient’s functioning as long as possible. “A sufferer becomes incontinent and can easily choke on food because of weak muscles. “Older persons’ level of acceptance of the illness is more ready – they’ve had a full life. Denial with younger sufferers is sometimes problematic, because they wish for medical staff to be visited regularly – to see if there is anything that can help the patient walk again or better their condition. “With younger patients a computer and internet is a valuable way to communicate and keep social contact. “A special computer with a big keyboard made a huge difference in Dianne’s life. It was bought from donations that were received for this purpose.” Delia says older people also more readily accept the illness because they may have children or grandchildren. “This is something a younger sufferer may never have had if the illness struck at a young age”

Spring festival of theatre announced for city

A

new performing arts festival is to take place in Cape Town in September thanks to a new partnership between the National Arts Festival and the city. Based on similar festivals in cities like New York, Amsterdam and Edinburgh, festival CEO Tony Lankester says the new Cape Town Fringe Festival will feature “young, dynamic and cutting edge” talent. “The Fringe model rests on two pillars – firstly the nature of the work on a Fringe is such that it is bold, innovative, exciting and it pushes boundaries for both artists and audiences. Secondly a Fringe festival has a business model behind it which encourages independence and sustainability, while costs are shared between perfor-

mers,” he says. The Cape Town Fringe aims to present around 40 productions in venues in and around the city centre, as well as in satellite venues in areas such as Langa.

Proven experience “Access is critical to the success of a Fringe and was a big factor in our decision to proceed with this project,” executive deputy mayor and acting mayoral committee member for tourism, events and marketing, Ian Neilson, says. Neilson said the National Arts Festival (NAF) has 40 years proven experience in hosting perhaps the most significant arts festival in the country, which takes place

annually in Grahamstown. “It has pursued a new strategy of expansion. Cape Town is its first major ongoing foray outside of Grahamstown,” he points out. Nielson also points to the fact that the festival will help increase tourism in what is usually the low season in Cape Town. “There is a need to up bed numbers at our hotels and to increase (the number of) tourists.” The festival will be held at various venues and theatres around the city, helping to create job opportunities in the performing arts sector and the hospitality industry. “Ticket pricing, choice of venues, as well

as the scheduling of performances all contribute to making a Fringe Festival appeal to as many people as possible, both traditional and non-traditional theatre-going audiences,” Neilson continues.

Home base While the Fringe will use as many as 16 venues, Cape Town’s City Hall will form the ‘home base’ for the event, and will boast several performance venues and a Fringe Hub where artists, audiences and the media will gather at the end of each day. V The Cape Town Fringe will run from 25 September until 5 October 2014. The call for proposals is cur rently open and more information can be found at www.capetownfringe.co.za.

SMART book can save money The City of Cape Town needs residents to help it make its services as sustainable as possible, says Subcouncil 4 chairperson Clive Justus. Speaking at the April subcouncil meeting, Justus said the city was working toward making the services it provides “as sustainable as possible”. But to achieve some of the “challenging” energy, water, waste and biodiversity targets the city has set, it “needs the people of Cape Town to help”, he said. Justus said the SMART Living Handbook contains practical steps for households to make their homes safer, save money and reduce environmental impact. “These steps have been well researched by experts and have been shown to make a diffe-

rence. The steps outlined are simple to achieve and can easily become part of everyday life,” Justus said. The SMART Living Handbook also provides information on key environmental resource issues facing us globally, and within our city. “Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu states we all have a responsibility to learn how to live and develop sustainably in a world of finite resources. The smart living handbook has been revised since its launch in 2007 and is available as a hard copy or downloadable from the City website,” Justus said. V The SMART Living Handbook is available at the pu blic library, at www.capetown.gov.za/environment or email smartliving@capetown.gov.za.

Annual charity ball for autism The annual banquet, ball and charity auction in aid of autism awareness is presented by Snap Support, a non-profit organisation, on Saturday 10 May at the Spier wine estate in Stellenbosch. The funds from this event will benefit Snap Education, the Durbanville based autism centre, and Snap Academy, the independent school for special needs. Both these organisations are reliant on external funding to support them as no funding is received from government to assist families and children suffering from what is considered to be the fastest growing developmental disorder in the world. Snap Education has been providing early intervention services to children with special needs from the age of two since 1998. The Snap Academy was registered om <au 2013 with the department of education as an independent mainstream school for children with special needs. The academy currently caters for children

from Grade 0 to 4 and have helped children from all across South Africa. “The Snap family has for the past 15 years made a significance difference in the lives of hundreds of families left without avenues to educate their special needs children and contribute to their independence,” said Dr Pieter Roelofse, chairperson of Snap Academy governing body. “The standard of education received and the dedication of the staff and teachers is of the highest quality. It is our aim to build on that for the future,” Roelofse said. The motivational speaker and illusionist, Wolfgang Riebe, will be the MC. Art, wine and various other items will be on auction at the event. Tickets are R750 per person and are available from esme@snap.org.za or Ina Viljoen on 083 463 4090. Tax rebate certificates are issued on net proceeds. V Visit www.snapforautism.org.za for more informa tion.

Cape Epic riders Nic Lamond and Hannes Hannekom raised a total of R30 000 for the Tygerberg Hospital Breast Clinic Transport Fund. Lamond and Hannekom achieved 23rd place in the men’s category and 28th place in the Absa Cape Epic overall. Pink Lady apples and Tru-Cape sponsored the team per kilometer ridden, provided they finished in the Top 30. The team tackled 800 rugged kilometres across the Western Cape, climbing approximately 15 000m over eight days. Former cycling magazine editor and lifelong adventurer Nic Lamond (36) said: “On some of those long dark days fighting a challenging route and some pretty inhospitable weather, knowing that our journey would be contributing in a positive way to the lives of the less fortunate helped keep us going. It warms my heart to know that we have helped 85 women get their treatments.” Hannes Hanekom (37) a member of the

Amabubesi Absa Cape Epic Finishers’ Club who has completed the race five times with two top 20 finishes, added: “We all know (or should) that giving is more rewarding than receiving but, while putting my body through hell during the eight days of the ABSA Cape Epic, I truly experienced the joy of knowing that this is really going to make a positive difference in someone’s life. That this is, as sure as I am hurting right now, going to make a physical difference to a real person and his or her family. You don’t get better reward than that.” The Tygerberg Transport Fund helps those who cannot afford the cost of transport to and from the clinic with the necessary financial assistance for them to get to all their treatments regularly.

Casting Crowns lewer gereeld liedjies

inger and songwriter, David Meulen has given himself the space to explore his acoustic side on his new album and first solo project, @davidmeulen. David used to front the band Dividable Grand, who enjoyed success with their album The Buzz, which resulted in them performing alongside some of the country’s biggest rock acts. “We had a good run,” David says of his former band, pointing out that they toured the country a couple of times. “I’ve always had an acoustic side to me and Dividable Grand was much more a rock band,” he says. “The music I’m making now is much more alternative acoustic vibes, more the indie side of things,” David says, although there are still traces of his rock influence. After Dividable Grand broke up, David took a solo road trip along the Garden Route. It took a while for him to “get into his stride” writing acoustic instead of electric songs, but it was when he made the decision to write for himself and not an audience, that the songs started taking shape.

Early start David traces the start of his music career back to when he was just six. He had got a guitar for his birthday after hearing a Beatles song on the radio and loving it. “I then wanted to be Paul McCartney. I only later realised he played bass not guitar, but by then I was too far in,” David recalls. “I’ve never really considered any other career,” he adds, saying that being a musician is all he ever wanted to do. Producer Brendyn “Rusti” Rossouw, who worked on The Buzz, produced, engineered and co-wrote some of the songs on @davidmeulen. “We had a ton of really great people come in and play on the album,” David says. Johnny Clegg’s drummer Barry van Zyl and Dirty Skirts bassist Maurice Paliaga are just two of the big names who can be heard on David’s new offering. “The two of them together- it’s just the best rhythm section you can imagine,” he says, smiling broadly. David describes the album as minimalist, in the sense that their number one objective was to not overproduce it.

David Meulen will be launching his debut solo album this week. “We wanted to keep the essence of the songs as they were written, with just guitar and foot stomping and vocals,” David explains. The idea was to enhance these elements instead of coating it in “general studio mish-mash”. David reckons there is a nostalgic, sombre feel to the album. @davidmeulen will be launched at Roodebloem Studios in Woodstock on Thursday, but David has plans to move away from a typical album launch.

Music sculpture He’s pulled in the help of Odd Enjinears who will be presenting their sound sculptures. “They basically make rhythmic, musical sculptures out of metal and welding and stuff,” he explains. They will also be using projections on an infinity wall. “We want people to remember it,” David says. Tickets for David’s launch cost R30 at the door. Entrance is free if you buy his album.

Regional rally revs the Overberg

T

he Overberg round of the Western Province Regional Rally Championship is set for Saturday with a 10:00 start and 16:00 finish at Quick & Go BP Bredasdorp. Lance Maytham and Pierre van der Westhuizen have produced a challenging yet compact eight special stage format with a combined special stage distance of 80km for the competitors (200km total distance) and spectators will be able to follow all the action at four dedicated spectator points. (For GPS references see events page on Facebook or visit www.wbmk.co.za.) The opening round of the 2014 Championship took place at nearby Klipdale and Bredasdorp shares the fast flowing format which should favour the powerful rear wheel driven BMW entries. However, what Shaun Jones and Mark Avice du Buisson gain in straight line grunt they lose in turning their heavier production based car. Second overall in Klipdale, they’ve had their confidence levels boosted and the Avice Pest Control S4 CPMCC BMW E36 328i must start the event as firm favourite for an upset victory. Ironically, as successful as they were, not even the Teletubbies (Thorsten Pey and Mark Palmer) could ever achieve an outright overall victory in their dominant E36.

Debut To add to the BMW optimism, Paul-Hendrik Franken and Henry Köhne will be making their debut in their recently acquired, ex-Jean du Plessis, Mantinou Group S4 WBMK BMW E36 325i. Some doubt exists as to whether Henry will be able to navigate on the weekend, but with the team scheduled to test their new steed an air of anticipation will certainly have spectators excited. Could the talented youngster from Gansbaai make regional rallying history this weekend? John and Weston Peiser will be there in their consistently fast Speed Pro Cycling Equipment S5 WPMC Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo 4x4 and this father and son combinati-

ons can never be underestimated. Also possibly suffering a little due to the weight of their production based vehicle, they have stability and traction which could see them spoil the fun for the Beemers. Winston Neethling and Lyle Marais are another pair to watch in their ex-Hannes Grobler Howard Place Motors S5 CCMCC Nissan Sentra 4x4. Good news is that Hannes Grobler (who celebrated his 59th birthday on 15 April) is on his way to recovery too. Sadly Ashley Haigh-Smith and Damian van As, winners of the Klipdale Rally, rolled their AHS Racing S3 Ford Fiesta R2 1600 during the recent Sasol Rally in Mapumlanga and seem unlikely starters as they’re awaiting new parts from the UK. For the interim the combination have been entered in the AHS Racing S3 Mitsubishi Lancer GT1600. Keenan Sassman and Matt-Jason Köhler are two more youngsters on a mission in their Howard Place Motors class S3 CCMCC Toyota Corolla RSi 1600. No doubt about their ability to be quick, but youthful exuberance still manages to spoil potential good results. Tiaan Rabe and new navigator Nico Esterhuyse went farming on SS2 at Klipdale but fortunately no damage was done to their S2 WBMK VW Golf MkI 1.6 and they set the fastest time in the class on every remaining stage. Unfortunately they had to be assisted from the agricultural excursion, scoring no result, and will want to make amends in Bredasdorp. Justin and Brian Hoskins are the father and son team to beat in their S2 WPMC VW Golf MkI 1.6 and they certainly wouldn’t mind taking another class victory. However, both teams would be wise to keep an eye on cousins Darren and Llewellyn van Greune who are hungry for a good result in their ex-Ggulethu Zulu S2 VW Golf MkI. Dark horses should be Abduraghman Amlay and Yusuf Ganief in their very rapid Amlay Motorsport S4 CCMCC Toyota Run X RSi. They certainly have the ability to win if they can find reliability to match their pa-

Herman Mathee and Ruan Reynders from Kuils River are exciting new prospects on the rally scene. ce. Driver/navigator Kesevan Naidoo had Llewellyn van Greunen as pathfinder in the Freightmore S3 CCMCC Toyota Corolla RXi 1600 in Klipdale but with the cousins set to return in their S2 VW Golf MkI 1.4i it will be Fabian Smith who fills the suicide seat in the Toyota on this occasion.

Ready Julian Calvert and Louise de Goede will have their S3 CCMCC VW Golf ready, Fagerie Isaacs and Tariq Khatib are aiming for another finish in their S2 CCMCC VW Golf MkI 1.6, as are Anthony Connelly and Randall Marais in their S4 CCMCC VW Polo 2.0. Great to see the Levy name return with Anwar Levy and Jean-Pierre Jacobs in action with the Jive S3 CCMCC VW Polo 2.0. Not

a happy debut in Klipdale, but they will be looking for a confidence-building finish in the Overberg. Herman Mathee celebrated his 29 March birthday in the best possible style by finishing his debut event as driver in the very impressive Maldev S4 WBMK Datsun GX Sedan 2.0. Ruan Reynders is happy to have completed his first event as navigator without major issues and the combination will undoubtedly be back for more. This car deserves a second look. Stephan Myburgh and Aerial Events are determining the feasibility study of having helicopter rides to, from and during rally events. No doubt following arally car in a helicopter could be as exhilarating as driving and should you be interested please speak to the man at the event.

T

wo exciting prospects in Luke Michael (19) and Nathan Fredericks (28) will make their EFC debut on 5 June at EFC Africa 30 at GrandWest. They fight out of REPS Fitness powering Rico Hattingh’s MMA academy in Bellville. Luke (lightweight) from Goodwood and Nathan (featherweight) from Kuils River are both excited about entering the hexagon for what is their first step towards glory. According to their trainer Rico Hattingh, both these guys have what it takes to make it to the top.

Massive future “I am so excited about these guys. Luke has a massive future ahead of him. He is only 19-years-old and he puts his heart and soul into this. I sometimes have to tell him to stop to prevent him from burnout. His dedication is phenomenal.” Luke trains three times a day for six days a week. “I simply love what I do. Besides my busy training schedule I help Rico with the

Underestimated “Nathan gets underestimated a lot, when you stand in front of him he doesn’t look intimidating. But let me tell you he is as hard as nails. He has the right mindset, he is humble and a helluva all-round fighter. “So far I am happy with our preperation, the guys are looking good, they are fit and don’t have any niggling injuries. We should know early May who their opponents will be. The gameplan for now is to strengthen their weak points and to improve their strong points even further,” said a confident Rico.

– (Sarel Burger)

training of children at schools,” said Luke. Nathan reckons having the experience of Rico in his corner will have a calming effect. “Rico brings a lot of experience and expertise. For now, we are conditioning and prepping for anyone. When it gets announced who we will face, then we will sit down and look at the opponent’s strong and weak points. But the mindset is that we will be ready for anyone come 5 June,” said Nathan determinedly.

With them is Sanlam sponsorship manager Gary van Loggerenberg.

Die ander Tygerbergse spanne se volgende wedstryde (tuisspan eerste) is: Bellville t Belhar, Noordelikes-Northlink-kollege t Universiteit Kaapstad, Kuilsrivier t Valsbaai, Collegians t Brackenfell, Goodwood t St. George, Macassar t Milnerton.

KARTING: CAPE CHAMPS SEEK TO EXTEND WINNING STREAK

Local lads lay down the line

Championship leads Cape youngster Charl Visser brings championship leads in the primary school Maxterino and Mini Rok 60cc classes home following an exceptional weekend in Port Elizabeth last month. Zanardi-mounted Visser will be under pressure from local Maxterino rivals JP Hamman (Kosmic), Dario Busi (TonyKart), Aidan Strydom (Zanardi) and Jason Coetzee (Zanardi), but never discount Gauteng’s Luca Munaretto (Birel) and upcountry TopKart drivers Tauriq Alibhai and Kwanda Mokoena. In Mini Rok, young Visser will once again have to fend off local rivals Hamman and Strydom, not to mention PE driver Joshua Coertze (Zanardi); Jozi Zanardi lads Jordan North, Blaine Rademeyer and Dillon van Vuuren, and the Top Kart quartet of Jarrod Waberski, Nemo Mazuai, Alibhai and Mokoena. One class where Cape drivers will seek

revenge is the Junior Max 125s where Delano Fowler (TonyKart) and brothers Kohen and Henry Bam (Kosmic) take on KZN championship leader Jordan Sherratt (Birel). KZN arch-rival Clinton Bezuidenhout (Kosmic), Bloemfontein’s Stuart White (Zanardi) and Vereeniging’s Joshua Dias (Haase) will be looking for a piece of that pie but will also have to contend with Cape Zanardi drivers Giordano Lupini, Dino Stermin, Isabella Fowler and Chadley Swartz, as well as Joshua Dolinschek (TonyKart).

Delano Fowler and the Bam brothers set to defend Cape glory in Junior Max.

Proving a point Another class where Cape drivers will be out to prove a point is the DD2, with Wesleigh Orr (Energy) and Luke van Rensburg (Zanardi) in the Cape corner. They need to topple CRG driver Eugene Britz with world champion Cristiano Morgado (TonyKart), Ryan Frost (Birel), Benjamin Habig (TonyKart), Bradley Liebenberg (Birel), Arnold Neveling (Zanardi), Nicholas Verheul (CRG) and Mitchell Licen (Intrepid) also chasing glory. Energy Corse driver Simon Moss should reign in the open Super Rok class but fellow PE man Chassen Bright (Zanardi) and Hartbeestpoort-based Keagan Masters (TonyKart) are sure to give him a hard time. Kashen Naicker (Zanardi) will need all his Euro experience to keep ahead of Delon Thompson (Top-Kart) in the high school Junior Rok, while Stuart White (Zanardi) Jason Smith (TopKart), Birel duo Sisa Ngebulana and Neha Harpal (Birel) are also drivers to watch. Non-championship races for Cadets should see local kids Troy Dolinschek, Kyle Visser, Adriaan Louw, Jason MacBeath, Julius Schwager and Paul Malcolm start as favourites but visiting Joshua Garland and Joshua De Piava could upset the cart. he second round of South Africa’s newly united blockbuster national Kart Championships races at the tricky Killarney circuit on Saturday. With hometown racers enjoying a good run, the locals are looking to extend several championship advantages. One class where Cape drivers dominate in the opening round is the open Rotax Max Challenge 125cc class where local ace Eugene Denyssen (TonyKart) defends his narrow championship lead from fellow Capetonians, Kosmic mounted Luke Herring and Julian van der Watt (Zanardi). Another local ace to watch is Jonathan Aberdein (TonyKart) and only a fool would ignore Birel driver Jurie Swart who moved up from Junior Max this year. Jo’burg lass Jennifer Verheul (FK) flies the female flag.
