New cop shop plans At the forefront in the ongoing bat tle for a new police station in Bel har is, from left, subcouncil chair person Desmond Jeftha and Pat America, chair of the local CPF, seen here in front of the land pro posed for upgrading of the Belhar Police Station. Photo: Gary van Dyk

A new police station for Belhar is a step closer – thanks to Tygerburger! An ongoing battle for a better police station in the area that started in 2008 may eventually be coming a reality with authorities reacting to an article that appeared in our newspaper earlier this year (“New cop shop wanted” - Tygerburger 15 February). Pat America, the chairperson of the Community Police Forum, is excited that there may finally be some positive action in regard to the improvement to local police facilities,

and local councillor Desmond Jeftha is also taking the battle to the next level. America said that in recent months he had been called in to a number of meetings with municipal and provincial authorities who are talking to the relevant SAPS structures to finally get the local station fully operational. “These recent meeting have given me hope,” he says. “Our police have been trying their best under these conditions since 2008 when we were first promised a new facility. “Unfortunately the assessments for our needs are now out of date because of the growth in the area, but

plans have already started to get these new surveys done.” In this respect the Department of Community Safety has come on board and will be doing a client satisfaction survey in the area. The aim of the survey is to examine the level of satisfaction of clients and victims on service delivery in the area. America added that he was excited that training would soon be starting for members of local CPF members to collect this vital data. “Training will be starting on 19 July, and we are confident that this is the first important step in having an improved police service in the area,” he said.

need action from relevant departments involved in government to make the upgrading a reality.” America concluded by calling on authorities to take note of future expansion in the area. “Belhar and the surrounding areas are still growing,” he said. “Every time we hear about proposed new developments that are planned in the area, but nobody considers the safety of the community when they do these proposals. “You just have to look at the growth over the past few years and the problems that have increased for police with no proper facilities. Let’s hope that the end of our long battle is in sight,” he concluded.

Jeftha agreed with America and said that the upgrading of the local police station was a priority for him as well. “There have been too many promises in the past, but the time for those promises are past and I am more intent than ever to make this new station a reality in the near future,” he said. “From my side I have already identified some suitable sites in the area where a new station can be built, and there is also space next to the existing station that I have pointed out that can be used. “In fact application for the ground next to the station was already made last year, now we just

During the arrests of the suspects the police also confiscated a shotgun reported stolen in Athlone, illegal guns, as well as toy guns, knives, and a variety of illegal drugs and illegal liquor. Brig Hendrik Jansen the station commander of Delft expressed his appreciation for the arrests and seizures and also complimented the Community Policing Forum (CPF) for supporting policing initiatives. Jansen added that said the CPF also embarked on an anti-crime awareness programme on Saturday where they visited homes of suspected drug dealers and gang outlets. “During the anti-crime awareness

Last week in Delft police embarked on an operation among second-hand dealers to curb the flow of stolen goods in circulation and to reduce the availability of suspected stolen goods. A large contingent of uniformed personnel, detectives, City of Cape Town’s metro police and law enforcement took part in the operation. Before sending them out on the operation station commander Brig Hendrik Jansen inspected the parade and stressed the importance of exercises like this in the community. He stressed that the availability and flow of second-hand goods is a serious concern for him and his office and warned dealers and members of the public to refrain from buying or selling stolen property. “It is a criminal offence and that they will be prosecuted,” he said. “The flow of stolen goods is exacerbated by the public’s perception that there is nothing wrong with buying stolen items for cheap, but we want to stress that it is also an offence, and we will prosecute to the fullest.” During the operation five suspects were charged for illegally selling second-hand goods and a 37-year-old arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property – 100kg of wire cables and street light fittings, with a street value of about R5 000. Jansen concluded that the operation was a success and that further operations are planned in the near future.

The traffic by-law which makes provision for the confiscation of cellphones that are being used while driving, seems to have fallen on deaf ears as far as city drivers are concerned. This conclusion is drawn after 16 cellphones were confiscated on Thursday 5 July, as reported by the City of Cape Town. The cellphones were confiscated during peak hours and were placed in soft, impactresistant boxes. Video recordings and spotters were used to identify the offending vehicles, and this information was then communicated to the traffic officers so that offending drivers

could be addressed. Receipts were issued to offending drivers stating that their cellphones could be collected between Monday and Friday this week at the Gallows Hill traffic department in Green Point. The law stipulates that confiscated phones can be collected 24 hours after being confiscated. The National Road Traffic Act urges motorists to pull off at the side of the road or to utilise a hands-free kit. “Using a cellphone whilst driving negatively affects the ability, awareness, vision and reaction time of drivers, thereby increasing the potential for a serious accident. “Distracted drivers pose a grave danger to other road users,” reported the City of Cape Town.

Cancer buddies, Nick van Rensburg (middle) with John Smith and his wife Tracey. Photo: Carina Roux

Need some (buddy) to lean on? CARINA ROUX

We all sometimes need a shoulder to lean on. Someone with a receptive ear who can take your hand when your view becomes emotionally obscured. Especially if you encounter an obstacle like the big C on life’s journey. A “dose of Nick when needed” was not among the list of doctors’ prescriptions recently diagnosed cancer patient John Smith received. His wife Tracey says they didn’t know how to cope with the news. “Having no family members to speak to, I didn’t know whether I was saying the right things when he got depressed. I was praying about it, and saying to the Lord please help me, that He could send someone to help John with the depression.” Father of three, Nick van Rensburg was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2009. Already in an advanced stage it subsequently spread to his liver. After numerous operations he is currently in remission, but still on preventative chemo-tablets. In response to an SMS request from Linda Greeff, co-founder of People Living With Cancer (PLWC), Nick contacted John who was struggling to come to terms with his diagnosis of colorectal cancer. “I have lived with a similar diagnosis for three years now, I can give that type of support. I am a Christian, and prayed about what God would want me to do with my life, and this to me was an answer.” “Cancer unifies people,” says Linda, as the friendship between Irishman Martin Connoly (68) and Thabo Rini (33) from Mfuleni, proves. Martin, who recently heard that he is in remission from rectal cancer was elated when asked to be a cancer buddy. “If I could be there for anyone that’s going through the same sort of trauma that I went through when first diagnosed and spare them a little bit of that, then I felt that I was doing something worthwhile.” Thabo had the same sort of questions he once had – what’s going to happen, how’s it going to affect me, what can I do to help? Martin’s been able to assist Thabo with the practical side of things. The challenge with Thabo was that he was in such a poor state in the beginning. “I had to try and keep pulling myself away from feeling pity for him, and just give him the moral support, give him positive messages all the time and just be there for him.” PLWC, one of the beneficiaries of this year’s ’Cause we Can! concert, originated out of a cancer survivors’ “celebration of life” event in 2000. Linda, who survived ovarian cancer heard others expressing the need to give something back. One of them was co-founder Carl Liebenberg who recalled how desperate he was to find someone who had gone through the same experience when he was diagnosed with lymphoma. “We are still quite a small organisation, but a powerful one as we are survivor-driven,” says Linda. “We did not have a choice about getting cancer, but now that we are part of this club, we are trying to make the best of it.” . Wiaan vat eers laat vlam STEHAN SCHOEMAN

Roses take Vodacom League

Ek was redelik langer as die anders spelers. Toe ek o.11 was, het hulle my flank toe geskuif vir een oefening. Ek het goed gedoen daar en van toe af in daardie posisie gespeel,” sê hy. Liebenberg is ná laerskool Worcester toe waar hy by HTS Drostdy op skool was. “Ek wou graag die koshuislewe ervaar en tegniese vakke neem omdat ek graag eendag ’n ingenieur wou word.” Hy onthou ook dat hy nie eers die o.16-Grant Khomo-span vir die Boland kon haal nie. Dinge het in 2009 begin gebeur toe hy in graad 11 was. Ek studeer tans ingenieurswese by Tuks.

Roses United from Free State are the 2012 Vodacom League champions after defeating Milano United from the Western Cape 4-2 on penalties in a tense final at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday. The match finished goalless after 90 minutes. With both sides already having clinched automatic promotion to the National First Division by virtue of winning their respective groups, the final was always going to be a closely contested affair and, notwithstanding supreme effort from both teams, neither was able to find a way to break the deadlock. It took two excellent saves from goalkeeper and Player of the Tournament, William Mothokoa to deny Shaun Daniels and Shamiel Philander in the shootout to ensure the trophy will reside in Bloemfontein for the next 12 months, while Milano United can return to Cape Town with their heads high to plan for life in the National First Division next season. Winning coach, former Bafana Bafana international, John Tale was very proud of his team. “I cannot properly express how proud I am of my boys. At the beginning of the season, we drafted a three-year plan for promotion and we have achieved it.” Safa president Kirsten Nematandani paid tribute to Vodacom’s role in establishing the league as a vital component within the structures of South Africa football.
