“Presidency Reduced” Reduced to a Tweet Campaign Presidency Reduced is a campaign which aims to spread awareness and challenge destructive tendencies. Trumps journey to the whitehouse was a painful yet powerful lesson on the potency of new media to agitate and motivate a vast, unseen audience. In 2016, Trump had utilized Twitter in a way no presidential candidate ever has, unleashing and redefining its power as a tool for political promotion, distraction and attack. He used Twitter as the centerpiece of his campaign, and he was able to reach thousands of otherwise non voters. He reached them by being unconventional; being a different kind of politician, who used channels like Twitter, instead of formal addresses, to spread his message. He’s different, ok.. but is he qualified? Is he decent? The answer is No, but it seems as though this veil of “normalcy”, catapulted by Twitter, he distracted everyone long enough. It is important to understand what Twitter is: a social media platform. It is important to understand what it is not: an extension of the whitehouse, a medium to where policy and/or legislation is introduced, and certainly not any indication of presidential stature. The effectiveness of Trump Tweets are the culmination of a progressively lazy, immediacy driven, and social-media oriented society. With the Reduced to a Tweet campaign, I hope to challenge this dangerous progression.

CAMPAIGN REDUCED TO A TWEET

SOME CONTEXT I made typographic postcards, posters and animations to tackle Trump. He is a problem. Freedom of speech is the right to articulate one’s opinions and ideas without fear of government retaliation or censorship, or societal sanction. Twitter is the freedom of speech format of choice of Donald J. Trump. The fact that Trump’s tweets have achieved such a degree of authority is

astounding and outright ridiculous. Not to mention the content for the majority of his Tweets are nonsensical, unprofessional, antagonizing, controversial, and even bashful. Truly Presidential stuff. I want to examine this dilemma, hopefully spread awareness, and challenge those who contribute to the sense of authority Twitter, and Trump has gained. Good grief.

Futura always comes to my rescue. Colors: I want everything black. I consider this a political dark age. For call outs, Twitter blue seemed appropriate.

Anti Trump Protest Signage:

The Vermont senator printed an oversized tweet of Trump’s to use as a visual aid during a Senate debate over the future of Obamacare, also known as the (ACA) Affordable Care Act. The president-elects tweet from May 2015 claimed that he was the only Republican candidate “to state there will be zero cuts to Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid.” Bernie Sanders has to resort to printing out a Trump Tweet as evidence, in order to hold Trump accountable.

GOP presidential contender Donald Trump continued his Twitter assault on the wife of chief rival Ted Cruz with a tweet, displaying a meme, that includes an unflattering photo of Cruz’s wife Heidi. The image—placed next to a photo of Trump’s wife Melania—was apparently created by a fan and then retweeted by Trump. “The images are worth a thousand words,” the caption reads. Fox News ate this up, and made it top headlined news for about a week. All of that coverage, over a bashful Trump Tweet. So newsworthy.

At an Anti Trump rally in Chicago, one of which over 4000 people attended, there was one, rather brilliant sign, which displayed an oversized cutout of another Trump Tweet. It states, “The electoral college is a disaster for an economy.” Knowing all the controversy which played into Trump getting elected, where he lost the popular vote, but won the electoral, and thus won the election. One could gather how this is ironic.

Giving Life to Type I had an opportunity to bring my postcards to life, through animation. I discovered that there was a video of Bernie Sanders at the Senate hearing, and thus I decided to create a kinetic type animation of him speaking in real time. Bernie is a great speaker, and as all great speakers do, he speaks with emphasis and intonation. Futura is the perfect typeface for this, because the family has so many weights. Words he speaks with emphasis can thus be bold, while contextual speech can be light, ironic speech in italic, and everything in between. I added animation effects, as well as color to facilitate this. As a whole, I wanted there to be a rhythm which builds, going from small, light type, with little color, to large and bold with color callouts. Not only was this good for design, but it matched the way Bernie spoke as well, saving his boldest statements for the end.
