Preface In the fall of 2019, in the basement of Rowan Johnson Hall at the University of Alabama, a group of writers came together with the mission to free their writing from the confines of the 8.5” x 11” page. Together they formed RJ3 Collective. For 15 weeks, they made books, filled them with original content, learned not to hold their work too dear, and had what can best be described as “a big time.” During those weeks, they gathered all they made into an archive housed under a chair in the English Department office. From March 13th to 27th in the year 2020, their archive was made available to the public at the Dinah Washington Center in Tuscaloosa, AL. Contained within this catalogue is a record of the pieces in the archive, which has since been dissolved, the pieces released back to their creators: the RJ3 Collective.

The RJ3 A Book Is . . . ...a container of information...a way to share a story and a vehicle for thoughts that is a physical record of our abstract thoughts!...as wonderful as you allow it to be...a way to represent your words like no other...a tool...a home...more than a cover with pages...an opportunity to grow...as much a story as what’s in it...a way to express one’s ideas and feelings in an easily accessible way...a container that holds and enhances literature...

Make Books! It gives you full control over the experience of your writing. Also, it’s fun. Make books to keep a hold of things that are fleeting like our thoughts and ideas and memories. They act as vehicles for thoughts and complex ideas and I think they 40

Collective Manifesto nurture the exchange of thoughts in a way that is very necessary today. Books are extremely necessary for the building of imagination and nonverbal communication. It is a great way to communicate education! Self-expression is necessary for society to thrive. Make books! To be in control of your writing’s living space. Make Books! To show creativity. Make Books! Making books is like priming yourself and your mind to be creative. Creating the actual book itself makes creating the contents of the book so much easier. The book making process perfects the writing process. Make books! To think about writing and reading in a new form. And because it’s beautiful. We should make books not only to share information or stories, but to share our thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Make Books! Because reading off screens SUCKS. Also, the right book can add to the reading experience! 41
